16 Aug 2024150. Mary Volmer on Artists, Athletes and Spirituality00:41:27

Wellness expert Heather Grzych interviews fellow author and Mission Fellow of Athletics Mary Volmer about the role of spirituality and religion in sports and the role of sports and religion in spirituality. They discuss what artists and athletes have in common with each other, and even have a quick chat about Joe Mazzulla, the head coach of the 2024 championship Boston Celtics team, and how other coaches use faith to drive missions forward. They also address what success looks like in sports, and if the concept of the dumb jock is really fair one.

Mary Volmer is the author of two novels (Reliance, Illinois and Crown of Dust) and is the Mission Fellow for Athletics at Saint Mary’s College of California. In this interfaith, lay chaplaincy position, she counsels and attends to the spiritual well-being of NCAA D-I athletes and coaches. She specializes in meditation, deep listening, and centering prayer techniques and teaches athletes and coaches to manage and alleviate anxiety, rediscover joy, and develop their gifts in a balanced and healthy way. In private practice, Mary works with artists, especially writers. She utilizes “talk story” to help artists discover the voice and the underlying emotional (and dramatic) structure of their work. As a former D-I women’s basketball player and a working novelist, Mary shares unique insights into the emotional and spiritual challenges experienced by athletes and artists. She understands the rigors and joys of discipline, the quiet rush of the flow state, the pain of failure, and the courage it takes to try and to try again. It is her mission to help artists and athletes of all spiritual and religious traditions to grow gracefully into their many gifts and to share those gifts with the world. www.maryvolmer.com

  • How gluten has been used as a filler in so many prepackaged and processed foods
  • How do I know what’s good for me when I get contradictory health advice from different sources

  • Why it’s so much more than counting calories, protein, and vitamin B we are getting
  • What disordered eating actually means
  • Whether being a dancer fuels disordered eating in women
  • How it’s so easy to carry forward unhealthy behaviors
  • Having discipline vs. going wild - in both the food context or sexual context.

  • How to relate to desire in a way that’s healthy
  • Why people who live alone may get sweet cravings late at night
  • An answer to the question “What is Ayurveda?”
  • Why each food is neither healthy, nor unhealthy, and why determining whether something is actually healthy requires us to look at how it is being used
  • The relationship between environmental sustainability and human health
  • Our unhealthy relationship with waste
  • How what we choose to eat impacts the environment around us and the people around us

28 Apr 2023118. Zach Leary on What We Owe to Psychedelics00:50:02

Heather Grzych interviews podcaster and psychedelic expert Zach Leary about why such a high percentage of people are turning to psychedelics today to improve their wellbeing, and the importance of using these medicines with ritual and sacredness. Zach explains why your life changes after a psychedelic experience, and why integration is so important, whether you’re using LSD, psilocybin from mushrooms, MDMA, ayahuasca or other natural or synthetic medicines in the psychedelic category. They discuss how the psychedelic movements actually led to modern Americans connecting with Indian sciences like yoga, meditation and Ayurveda, despite these medicines often being frowned upon in these communities. They also delve into how technology and AI is being used to recreate famous deceased teachers like Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Alan Watts, etc.

Zach Leary is a podcaster,  writer, cognitive dissident, yogi and psychedelic advocate. Growing up in Beverly Hills in the 1980s, he came to realise that the man who often took him to school in the morning and “tossed the ball” in the backyard with him, was not only one of the instigators of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, but also “had a front row seat for some of the most important cultural movements of the late twentieth century.” This led Zach to create a path for himself that’s been rich with many different incarnations ranging from digital marketing ace for Apple to futurist to psychedelic integration specialist and advocate.

Zach currently hosts The MAPS podcast and has in depth knowledge of psychedelic assisted facilitation, is a trained meditation teacher, a student of bhakti yoga, an IFS enthusiast and expert in the history of psychedelic culture and its many methodologies. Zach is also a facilitator at the Evolution Retreat Center in Negril, Jamaica. Evolution Retreats is a beautiful retreat center that does legal psilocybin retreats using the most modern and effective methodologies available. As an author, Zach’s first book “And Now, The Work Begins – Psychedelics in the 21st Century and How to Use Them” will be published by SoundsTrue in late 2023.

Books referenced: Obedience to Authority by Stanley Milgram, Ayurvedic Pharmacology and Therapeutic Uses of Medicinal Plants Dravyagunavignyan by Vaidya V.M. Gogte, Be Here Now by Ram Dass, and Zach’s book in development about the history and modern use of psychedelics being used safely, wisely and effectively.

07 Oct 2022104. Susan Piver on the Differences Between Us00:46:44

Listen to Susan Piver, New York Times bestselling author of nine books and insightful meditation teacher, school Heather on the enneagram from her Buddhist’s perspective, and at the same time, divulging the single most important thing to know in order to have a successful relationship. Discover how tools that help you understand the differences between people actually help you connect better with people. Get real about whether you want others to be what you want them to be, or what they really are.

In this episode, Heather and Susan discuss:

  • Why no one knows where the enneagram came from.
  • Difference between exoteric vs esoteric teachings of Buddhism.
  • Why it’s such a painful time, and why things that have worked in the past may not work today.
  • Two ways to work with difficult emotions: 1) Get away from it, but then your world shrinks. 2) Go towards it, and expand to include everything you feel.
  • How the enneagram, and other tools that help you understand the differences between people, actually help you feel love and connect better with other people. This can help you improve relationships.
  • How the enneagram is different from Myers-Briggs and DiSC.
  • How a real relationship exists when you can answer the question, “Who is this person outside of my own mind?”
  • What you can transform when you can see where someone else’s attention can go. Do I want you to be the person I want you to be, or the person that you really are?
  • How to spot when you’re projecting.
  • In order for another person to understand you, you have to know yourself.
  • The benefit of being fully loved.

Susan Piver is a Buddhist teacher and the New York Times bestselling author of The Hard Questions, The Wisdom of a Broken Heart, Start Here Now, The Four Noble Truths of Love, and others. Her latest book is The Buddhist Enneagram. Piver has been a student of Buddhism since 1993. A master at communications, Carolyn also provides some advice about how to avoid using jargon if you really want to connect with new people.

In this episode, Heather and Carolyn discuss:

  • When Carolyn almost started flipping houses in a moment of trying to find herself
  • What to do when you feel like you are searching everywhere for answers
  • Looking for clues inside ourselves vs outside ourselves
  • How to be less impulsive
  • Knowing what is the right decision
  • Heather and Carolyn’s human designs
  • How you can use coaching to find that next place you’re going to
  • Whether it’s important to care how your message is received by others
  • How people connect with each other in different worlds - home world, work world, wellbeing world
  • What jargon is, and the risk of using it
  • How we know when something is spiritual jargon

Carolyn Warsham is a cookbook author, food writer, and corporate director turned life and career coach centered in spirituality. She coaches in 1:1 and group settings, dedicated to helping her clients end the patterns that aren't working for them and start fresh - whether that's at work, in relationships, mindset shifts, and more. She’s an entrepreneurial journalist and publicist who has written several books, including Eat Plants Every Day and Rich Table. Clients call her when they feel the nudge that there's something more out there for them but they're not quite sure what, when they are ready to pursue their dream vocation, or when they realize that negative thought patterns are holding them back. Typical outcomes are healed relationships, new jobs, and finally starting that "one-day" "someday" project on the back burner. Check out Carolyn’s Begin Again Program.

15 Apr 2024141. Heather Grzych on Religion and Fertility Today00:36:34

Wellness expert Heather Grzych asks whether religion is helping or hindering fertility and reproduction today, considering that a large percentage of children today are actually born to unwed mothers. Religion and science can both shape one’s approach to their wellness, medical and even fertility journeys, including when it’s okay to have sex and who we can have sex with. While many aspects of religion may be beneficial, are they also limiting modern people? Do we still have to follow the rules of religion or our family culture and get married to have kids today? How can people build rituals for the rite of passage into becoming a parent outside of religion?
