17 Oct 2018BYP 155: The Two Most Life-Sucking Words You Can Tell Yourself00:26:05

Behold two of the most sleep-stealing, life-sucking, worry-causing words I tell myself: “By now.”

Fight as I may, they always seem to find a way to seep into my thoughts. Maybe you’ve said a few of these to yourself:

By now…I should be out of debt.

By now…I should have lost 20 lbs.

By now…I should be finished with school.

By now…I should have kicked that habit.

By now…I should be married.

By now…I should have a bigger house.

By now…I should be famous.

By now…I should know what I want to do with my life.

In this episode, you'll learn practical steps on how to deal with "by now" syndrome, as well as the concept of "death by a thousand cuts". You'll also learn how to position yourself for greater opportunities.

09 Jan 2019BYP 166: How To Deal With Pain, Loss, and Grief00:24:48

Experiencing pain, loss, or grief sucks (that’s an understatement), yet it’s a normal part of life. In this episode I share some hard-learned lessons on moving through pain, loss, and grief.

Pain + Reflection = Progress

One of the most important capabilities you can develop in life is the ability to reflect on pain rather that react or avoid it. Most people can’t reflect on their pain while they are going through it. They focus so much on the pain that they aren’t able to consider what is happening, why they ended up in this situation, or how they are processing the pain.

Once the pain subsides, they simply move onto something else and never really address the core issues. They medicate, or cope, or distract themselves because it’s too painful to go back and address the core issue.

Here are 5 things I’ve learned in the school of hard knocks when it comes to managing and processing pain in order to produce progress:

  1. Go to the pain rather than avoiding it.
  2. Write a psalm to God.
  3. Just do the next right thing.
  4. Stop running your tongue over your gums where the tooth used to be.
  5. Ask, “What does this make possible?”

If you are going through a difficult time right now, please don’t hesitate to reach out to friends and family. To isolate yourself is often the worst decision you can make when experiencing tremendous pain, loss, and grief.

If I can be of help, ping me directly via Instagram at @mikekimtv or email me at mike@mikekim.com.

27 Dec 2022360: My Daily Self-Affirmation Track00:19:52

Please Read: Affirmations have been a huge part of my growth this past year and I thought it would be appropriate to publish the actual track I listen to every morning and evening.

While my background is in writing, I’ve always found it difficult to write my own affirmations. I’ve collected several from a few books I’ve been reading, the most significant of which has been Quantum Success by Sandra Anne Taylor. This book contains several affirmations at the end of each chapter, so I recorded them and created my own affirmation track.

If you’d like the transcript I wrote for this episode, visit the show notes page here: mikekim.com/yatb360.

I left this track without music or other normal pre-rolls, so that you can listen to your own music in the background and not be distracted by other audio segments.

Happy New Year, and may 2023 be your best year ever.

30 Jan 2017BYP 104 - What To Say On Your Website (5 Things Your Customers Need to Hear You Say)00:20:22

Your website’s homepage will often be the first point of contact for prospective customers and clients. That said, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

I've seen hundreds of websites over the years, from Fortune 50 corporations to the solo entrepreneur and everything between. There’s one thing that prevents all of them from converting prospects into paying customers:

The lack of clarity on their website.

When you influence language, you influence thinking. The right words can attract paying customers like a moth to a flame. The wrong words can repel customers faster than a guy with bad breath.

Today's episode will give you a 5-point framework to make sure the words on your website are crystal clear.

17 Feb 2021BYP 273: Wealth, Worth, and the Permission to Prosper With Ray Edwards00:30:39

Today, I am bringing my good friend Ray Edwards back onto the show. He just released his new book, Permission to Prosper. The book is all about money, self-worth, and why it’s okay to do well. It’s about time those of us who are building businesses fixed our mindset around the issue of wealth. As Ray says, not only do we have permission to prosper, but a mandate to multiply.

Ray also taught me that an abundance of money won’t fix a poverty of spirit. If you think you live with a poverty mindset, tune in to our amazing conversation where talk about:

  1. How he went about writing Permission to Prosper
  2. The mindset shifts he had to make when money started coming in
  3. Changing our understanding of wealth at an atomic level
  4. Wealth and self-worth
  5. What Ray’s book is all about
  6. Accepting generosity from others
  7. Why equal distribution of wealth helps no one
  8. Making our lives more valuable in the automation age

24 Feb 2016BYP 70 - How Much Money Do You Need to Pull Off A Pivot?00:26:28

There's a lot of great content out there on making the leap from your day job to entrepreneurship. Several good friends of mine teach different versions of this, and a good part of my own business involves helping people with this pivot.

The one issue I have is that the information shared (at least free, online) is often incomplete, and the one glaring omission involves the most important and pressing question of all:

"How much money do I need to make a successful pivot?"

Isn't that what we all want to know? I sure did, and today I'm going to outline a process that may help.

28 Sep 2016BYP 91 - Keep Pressure On the Wound00:15:43

What does it take to really grow a business? In today's episode, I talk about why being grateful for where you are may actually be keeping you from where you need to go.

Starting and scaling a business takes a lot of hard work, but there's a reason you decided to do it in the first place. There was something in your life that was unfulfilled. You didn't want to do meaningless work. That was a longing -- even a pain point -- that caused you to launch your own brand.

Today's episode is all about keeping pressure on that wound, about maintaining the drive and motivation to keep going.

13 Jan 2016BYP 64 - How To Market Soft Skills00:24:08

A few weeks ago Dr. Ann Vertel, an accomplished business coach, speaker, and avid listener of the podcast, asked about how to market "soft" skills.

In today's episode I share a simple approach to marketing based on your potential client's level of awareness. In short, the more aware a client is of his or her need for your service, the more direct you can be with your marketing. The more unaware they are, the more "indirect" you need to be in your marketing -- preferably with an emphasis on story-telling.

Mentioned in Today's Episode:

18 Jun 2024423: What Has Changed About the Personal Brand Industry Since COVID00:30:18

Together, we uncover the secrets to crafting a balanced and impactful digital strategy that seamlessly integrates a robust website with an engaging social media presence. Stay ahead of the curve as we explore the evolving digital landscape, the rise of AI-generated content, and the nuances of contemporary marketing tools.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Why maintaining a cohesive digital presence is essential and how to balance the strengths of a website with the networking power of social media.
  • About the strategic decision-making process behind prioritizing your website over social media, and the potential pitfalls of each approach.
  • Get practical advice on using lead magnets to grow your email list, even as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent.
  • How to navigate the challenges of content marketing in an AI-driven world and the importance of staying updated with technological advancements.
  • The need to resonate with younger demographics by leveraging current technology and communication channels effectively.

27 Sep 2022347: The Myth of Passive Income and How You Can Still Profit from It00:29:22

Many people believe that passive income will solve everything.  They don’t realize the price that needs to be paid to keep their personal brand recognizable through books, courses, and trainings. In this solo episode, I go into what passive income means to personal brands and how it’s different than what Robert Kiyosaki teaches in his book “Cashflow Quadrant.”

When thinking of passive income, we often think of investing in real estate. But as you buy more real estate, more energy is required to keep making money. However, you don’t need physical property to make passive income as a personal brand. You can sell your intellectual property.

Listen in for what I recommend to truly make a passive income.

07 Mar 2017BYP 109 - Why 10x Thinking Is Better Than 2x Thinking00:23:30

One of the keys to my success has been thinking in terms of 10x rather than 2x. When you ask yourself the hard question of how you plan to grow your business by 10x, it opens up new pathways in your thinking and decision-making.

21 Sep 2016BYP 90 - How To Rest, Refuel, and Re-Engage with Bryan Buckley00:38:36

Fact: You don't need more time. You need more energy. Energy is your greatest source of productivity. But do you have enough? What could you accomplish if you had more energy?

Today's podcast features Bryan Buckley, a high-performance coach I got to know during the most recent semester of The Pivot Course.

Bryan is the type of guy that just exudes energy, and today he walks us through what he calls "The Exhaustion Cycle" and "The Energy Cycle" -- and how we can tap into better sleep and new levels of energy.

Check Out Bryan's Free Online Conference

I had the privilege of presenting at Bryan's Successful Entrepreneur's Online Conference. This is a free event you won't want to miss.

Check out the Successful Entrepreneur's Online Conference here.

Introducing The Pivot Profiles, a 'magazine' featuring 14 real-life pivot success stories. It's yours, absolutely free.

The singular goal of this magazine is to give you a wide array of people, personalities, and pivots for you to identify with.

This is a powerhouse group. The folks inside hail from a variety of industries:  huge corporations, small business, radio, military, ministry, government, academia; the list goes on. We even have a former park ranger!

Some of them launched into solopreneur ventures; others started companies. One left business to enter the ministry, while others left the ministry to go into business. It’s all here.

26 Jun 2019BYP 190: 7 Things You May Not Know About Me00:29:28

“In a personal brand, the messenger is often more important than the message.”

One of the most underrated and overlooked pieces of marketing content you can create is this very episode!

In the personal brand space, the messenger is more important than the message. Think about every “guru” or expert you follow. Does that person say anything radically different from his or her competition? Radically different?

Probably not. So why do you follow that person over, say, someone else? It’s because of the way you feel about them. It’s because there’s some level of connection or commonality, and that’s exactly what doing a “7 Things You May Not Know About Me” post does for you.

I often use this kind of content in new settings like group coaching days or mastermind sessions to build rapport and pick up on interesting things about people that might be used in their marketing. For this episode, I selected these topics (and you’ll hear my answers to each):

  1. Favorite food
  2. Nickname as a kid
  3. First job
  4. Best travel story
  5. Family tradition
  6. What you wanted to be as a kid
  7. Something you are “OCD” about

The point is to have fun with this kind of post. I’ll often pull from the answers to these questions and create a “Hi, I’m Mike” post after I’ve received a number of new followers on social media.

Otherwise people feel like they’re jumping into my story mid-season, and doing a post that summarizes some of these things can help bring people into my journey and brand.

05 Jun 2019BYP 187: Put Out the Fire or Fan the Flame - 5 Business Takeaways From My Time in Florida00:19:21

My time in Florida has come to a close (nothing to worry about, it was always intended to be a 6-month tenure) -- and I have so many incredible insights from my time there.

When you work with people of the caliber of John Maxwell and Paul Martinelli, you’re bound to pick up on a few things. Here are just a few that impacted me, that I hope will help add value to you:

Incentivize people with money and commissions. You’ll hear a bit of my background in sales (yes, I used to be a telemarketer!) and how I was inspired to return to my roots in commission-based incentives.

You can’t save your way to wealth. I spent more money to keep my business running during this time period, and it made more money because of it.

You’re being hired to either put out a fire or fan a flame. Remember this analogy! It will be of use to you when having conversations with potential clients.

Telling is not selling. If all you do is tell, you aren’t having a conversation, you’re giving a lecture.

There are fans, and there are people who actually want to learn.

My time in Florida was amazing from a professional standpoint. The wisdom I gained there is invaluable -- but I also gained tremendous personal clarity because, well, I didn’t like living in Florida!

It was good for me in that I had a place to land for six months. Life was a bit chaotic the past few years, so it was good to be grounded for a season. I realized more than ever that I want to live in a place where I can feed off the energy, atmosphere, and culture.

As with all of life, it’s so important right now to get good at the art of reframing the situation. We need to keep asking, “What does this make possible?” For personal brand businesses, the answer is, “A lot.” I’ve been asked over and over if businesses should sell, market, and run ads at this time. 1. In your marketing, change your language from survival and frustration to the language of adjusting and adapting

2. Jerry McGuire yourself

3. Don’t stop selling

4. Don’t be afraid to downshift back into what you did before

5. Tater-tots and sawdust

As we step into 2024, it's nice to back to solo episodes. One of my big tenets this year is to "run your own race" – it's time to shift our focus from comparing our lives to others to embracing our unique paths.

  • Practical Strategies: Learn practical strategies to help you focus on your own path, including goal setting and cultivating gratitude.

As we kick off the first few episodes, we're going to look at the most important relationship you have: the relationship you have with yourself.

Ultimately you're the only person that can take responsibility for your own life, but if you've ever asked, "What am I going to do with my life?" you are not alone!

Life is not linear. Unfortunately, most of us are underprepared for that simple fact because most of our developmental years are straightforward...

But real life is anything but straightforward.

In this episode I share:

  • 3 bizarre (but effective!) questions to help you find your life purpose
  • What pisses me off about corporate America and formalized education
  • Why seeing people who live like zombies and spend their days at jobs they don't enjoy breaks my heart
  • The "only" two career paths I was allowed to consider when growing up (typical Asian kid)
  • Why real life is all about "off-roading" rather than highway driving
  • A deeper look at what the word "fulfillment" really means

10 Jun 2020BYP 237: Do You Make These 5 Mistakes When Trying To Connect With Your Audience with Geoff Kullman00:41:17

Geoff Kullman is an amazing copywriter who helps his clients connect to their audience. He is one of the few writers I completely trust and have even worked with on my own client projects.

In this episode, we talk about some of the mistakes entrepreneurs make in connecting with their audience. Being clear isn’t enough. At some point, each of us has to learn to tap into emotion to genuinely connect with people.

Some of the things we discuss that keep entrepreneurs from doing so are:

1. Talking about themselves way too much without making connection points to their customers

2. Not identifying their client’s hopes, values, dream, and goals

3. Being afraid to ask for a sale, even if they truly believe in their offer

4. Not knowing their purpose

5. Failing to build credibility until a crisis occurs

I’ve matured in this space over time and have realized the importance of consistently honing in my marketing skills. If you have a personal brand business but struggle to put words to your values and connect with your audience, listen in to all Geoff has to share.

30 Jan 2019BYP 169: The 3 People Standing Between Where You Are and Where You Want To Be00:21:29

Whether you’re looking to reinvent yourself or simply step into more fulfillment, the greatest disharmony stems from standing at the crossroads between 1. who you are and 2. who you want to be. You’ll often feel like there’s more than one of you. Well, there is.

Introducing The Three You’s:

  • The Present You encompasses who you are right now. You define yourself by the current work you do, the people you interact with, and the activities you engage in. Hello, mirror.

  • The Public You is closely aligned with The Present You. It’s the version that is understood by and made accessible to the people around you. If you’ve worked your whole life in real estate, it’s fair to assume that your neighbors know you as “the real estate guy or gal.”

  • The Pending You is the person you’re seeking to grow and develop. This is the person waiting in the wings, itching to make his or her debut. This is the person you scream daily self-success affirmations at in the morning shower, and point at in the mirror and shout, “You were made for more! The world is your oyster! You eat dragons for breakfast!”

Clearing the pathway for The Pending You to take center stage is vital. You are literally working a transition to present a new “you” to the world. That’s why it’s so hard.

A Few Additional Mindset Shifts:

  • I accept I will never have security. Peace, yes. Security, no.
  • Sometimes you have to move on in order to move up.
  • The credibility isn’t in the teaching, the credibility is in the living.
  • Why I’ve had success in my career: I make ideas happen. It’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen. Execute.
  • Life is not meant to be a one-player game.

20 Mar 2019BYP 176: 10 Takeaways from the John Maxwell Team’s International Maxwell Certification Event00:30:21

Recently I was able to serve and attend the John Maxwell Team’s International Certification Event in Orlando, FL.

There were about 3,000 people in attendance, and this was my first opportunity to see and experience what the entire “tribe” of the John Maxwell Team is about.

While the stage content is second-to-none, I quickly realized the same can be said of the people. I was privileged to meet incredible people from all sectors of leadership.

One thing I often teach when advising brands is to focus on psychographics rather than just demographics. Demographics are statistics: age, income, sex, and so forth. But psychographics are all about mindset and how people think.

When it comes to personal development, psychographics trump demographics every time. It was clear in what I saw at this event: there were people from all walks of life, representing over 100 countries, ranging from 11 years old all the way 90 years old. What tied them together? A desire to make the world a better place through positive influence.

One of the great privileges of my professional life is to steward the messages of influential people like John Maxwell and Paul Martinelli, and it’s often in those side conversations that the best stuff comes out.

A Free 5-Part Series on How to Market Yourself As A Coach or Speaker

I’ve put together a free teaching series (5 hours of content!) called the Brand You Bootcamp for those who want to start a side-hustle and eventually scale into a full-time business.

  • How to market yourself as a coach, consultant, speaker, blogger, or podcaster
  • What tools to use when you start, and why you do not need to “spend money to make money”
  • How to position yourself as an authority, even if you’re just starting out
  • How to properly identify your ideal buyer with sniper-like accuracy (no, it’s not about demographics)
  • How to create an irresistible lead magnet that pulls in subscribers like a tractor beam

Over 800 people have gone through this bootcamp, and I’ve received rave reviews saying it’s better than courses that cost $2,000. It’s free, so if you’re looking to start, run, or grow your personal brand business, join the bootcamp today: https://mikekim.com/start

23 Dec 2020BYP 265: The 5 Stages of Business00:17:32

Today I’m sharing one of the most helpful frameworks for me in my business. I learned it from my friend Tod Herman. This framework has helped me see where my business is and where I want to go with it in the coming years. The 5 stages are:

  1. The start-up phase
  2. The ramp-up phase
  3. The build-up phase
  4. The scale-up phase
  5. The leader-up phase

No framework is perfect, but this one is extremely helpful. My hope is that you’ll be able to identify where you are in this matrix. This will show you what you need to do to solve the struggles you’re currently going through in your business.

03 Apr 2017BYP 113 - [Niches] How to Build A Six-Figure Fitness Brand with Jeff McMahon00:36:28

It's been said the "riches are in the niches" -- and that's what we're going to be looking at for the next 3 episodes on the podcast.

You're going to get real-world case studies of how several of my friends and colleagues have built significant six-figure personal brands by narrowing their niche.

In today's episode, I interview Jeff McMahon of Total Body Construction, a personal trainer who has taken his business to the next level by training entrepreneurs virtually in addition to what he does in person.

Jeff's business is fascinating because he has three different niches to the same fitness business, and all three have very different types of customers. It's a great lesson on how to extend your product line laterally -- meaning offering the same services to different audiences.

We also talk about the realities of building a visually-based business (you've got to look good to build a fitness business, right?) and how Jeff leveraged one client, internet entrepreneur Pat Flynn, to land client after client afterwards.

You'll also find out why I personally think most of my fitness coach friends are being duped by big businesses like BeachBody. While I love BeachBody's products, the way they advise their trainers to build businesses is terrible!

20 Mar 2017BYP 111 - How To Make Networking ... Work!00:25:37

This episode is a direct response to a question posted in the Brand You Community Facebook group by Mariana Ruiz:

"One thing that keeps coming to mind is how do you get good at networking? I am a huge introvert and this year I have pushed myself out to join masterminds and even going to a live event. How do I keep up those relationships and nourish the right ones without feeling burnt out? And also making sure they are strategic."

A few thoughts regarding my personal mindset when it comes to networking: It’s not about hunting, it’s about helping. It's about farming. It's about cultivating relationships. I also look to connect with super-connectors.

Here are the five points summed in today's episode:

  1. Pick who you want to get to know
  2. Study these folks ahead of time so you’re prepared to add legendary value.
  3. Ask questions that get the conversation going.
  4. Take a strategic selfie
  5. Follow up and offer something they would genuinely find useful

Never Ask These Questions!

  • Is there anything I can help you with?
  • So, tell me about yourself...
  • What’s your story?
  • What do you do?

Instead, Ask These Questions:

  • What’s giving you energy right now?
  • What are you working on that’s really exciting you?
  • I know such-and-such a person that might be a great fit for you. Interested?

19 May 2016BYP 79 - Stop Being Over-Responsible For Your Clients00:11:47

This week I spent a few days with my mastermind group in Phoenix, AZ for an in-person powwow. One of the things we do is a ten-minute "TED-style" talk to share something of value with the rest of the group.

In this episode, I share the content of that talk which was the concept of being "over-responsible" for our clients' success. In this short episode we'll cover:

  • the difference between over-delivering vs. being over-responsible
  • the one word we all need to re-introduce to our vocabulary

One of the most helpful books I've found on this topic, both professionally and personally, is Boundaries by Henry Cloud

At the end of 2021, I decided that I wanted to take a month off of work. I set my systems in place, let everyone know that I would be taking a break, and began my staycation on June 1st.

During my time off I learned some valuable and unexpected lessons. For example, I learned I have a lot more agency over my calendar than I thought. I also found that I enjoy writing and my social posts were having a higher impact than they used to.

I was able to walk away for five weeks and return, refreshed and enriched, to my business without missing a beat. I officially returned to work on July 12th with a new excitement for what I do.

Listen in to learn how I took five weeks off of work and how you can begin to put systems in place so you can take a break without your business suffering.

26 Sep 2018BYP 152: The 5 Psychological Steps Behind Why You Delay Decisions00:23:21

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Have you ever had to make a decision and kept delaying it?

There's actually a 5-step psychological process behind why you get excited to make a change in your life -- and then fail to follow through:

  1. Satisfaction
  2. Dissatisfaction

That's what we're going to talk about on this episode. Once we understand how we make decisions, then we can make better ones and break the cycle.

In this episode I share:

  • The root meaning of the word "decide"
  • Why, when helping others, you must only do everything you SHOULD, and not everything you CAN
  • The power behind the phrase, "There must be more to my life than ____..."
