07 Jun 2022The 3 People Who Need to Launch an Online Course00:33:31

What do Fit Pros, Waitlisted Service Providers and Industry Superstars have in common?

They should all launch an online course (or coaching program, or digital product), like - yesterday.

In this episode I share my top 3 picks for who can successfully launch an online offer and give a roadmap to how to get started.

If you're an instructor, a waitlisted 1:1 service provider or someone with a fixed salary but who is a leader in your industry... listen up. Digital products might just change your life, like they did mine (like, 6 figures changed).

Takeaways:

1) If you want to scale, you need to either add another service provider to your business or add a passive revenue stream. By adding a course or digital product to your business, you can better serve your 1:1 clients by giving them specific training on areas that complement what you do so well- keeping them coming back, but also giving them greater results!

2) If you're a Fit Pro, you have a built-in audience and are already doing the work of being an entrepreneur. Adding a virtual program to allow your following to access you is going to deepen their connection with you, complement what you're doing in your studio, and give your "people" greater access to the magic you already serve them up with.

3) If you're an industry leader, you likely have a rockstar recipe that has your colleagues (and maybe even competitors) asking "how the heck did you do X?". Launching a program or a course that "teaches your industry" will benefit your community, but also add a source of revenue that doesn't rely on asking your clients to do more with you. I give tangible examples of who should do this and even a few ideas to get you started.

If this episode rocked your world- head to the TLF application page below and set-up a call with yours truly to see if launching an online offer is right for you this year. Applications close July 7 for my late-summer cohort!

13 Aug 2022From Failing the Bar Exams to a $30k Launch: Piper Riley Thompson, Ontario Bar Exam Coach00:55:38

Ready for a masterclass in failure, resiliency, and monetizing your magic?

Piper Riley Thompson is a friend AND client who shares exactly how she created a thriving business (Ontario Bar Exam Coach) out of one of the hardest times in her life - failing the bar exams - and then having a waitlist of students wanting to work with her.

This conversation is hands down one of my favourites - ever.

We both get super vulnerable talking about debt (PSA: law school is extremely expensive!) money, mindset, realities around launching and ultimately how Piper managed to launch Bar Exam Bootcamp to leverage her experience and scale her offerings into making more than $30,000 in her first launch.

We also talk about how to let go of the fear of judgement from others and the bullsh*t we scare ourselves into believing that could have stopped us in our tracks.

Whether you're curious about course launching or just want to tune in for a ridiculously honest and vulnerable conversation about life, business, money, and burnout...

You're in the right place.

PSST: If you loved this episode, share it with your friends! Take a screenshot,  share on your stories and tag us, or leave a rating and a review. Thanks for listening!

24 Oct 2022Creating safer spin spaces: why I'm not playing Kanye West in my rides.00:18:04

This quick episode is mostly for my fellow instructors, coaches, and fit-pros who make playlists (DJs, you too!)

In it, I talk about my decision to eliminate Kanye West's music from my rides based on hate speech and anti-semitic remarks he's openly said, and doubled down on, in recent weeks.

Instructors: we have a platform, a pedestal, and a microphone that gives us the ability to create spaces where people feel safe, validated, connected to others, inspired by, and motivated from.

Getting intentional with the artists you play and the values they reflect is a key element of this, and a responsibility I'm continuously reminded of.

Listen to this quick episode and let me know what you think in the DMs.

30 Oct 2022🎉 Every Body Belongs on a Bike: Inclusive Fitness with Jordan Reichert00:54:32

Jordan Reichert believes every BODY belongs on a bike (and hey, so do I!).

As the lead instructor at a Cyclebar studio, Jordan faced rejection- more than 15 times in fact- on her way to the podium.

Now, Jordan inspires other instructors and fit pros through relatable content, inspirational messages and sharing her light with others on IG- and now through merchandise.

We talk about how to come back from failed auditions, feeling confident in being yourself on social media (and how to put yourself "out there"), Instructor Magic, creating options for your riders and get really tactical with a step-by-step approach to making new riders feel comfortable in your rides.

I also announce two new masterclass dates to celebrate the launch of Instructor Magic, opening its doors for the sixth time on November 7.

Instructor Magic FREE Masterclass: 5 Keys to Fitness Instructor Mastery
(February 12 and 13)

Ever wish you could rewind some of the greatest moments of your life?

Meeting Kristina Girod and have her coach my team in Instructor Magic in 2022 was one of those.

Kristina is the Chief Motivation Officer and CEO of Power + Flow in Arizona, and a guest I'm proud to have had on the Yes You Can podcast before in one of our all-time greatest hits episodes.

She has consistently levelled up the entire indoor cycling industry and as I get ready to open doors to Instructor Magic... I wanted to share an excerpt of her 75 minute masterclass that previously was exclusive to my Instructor Magic students.

  • In this excerpt we talk about room leadership and give specific examples of how to correct *while encouraging* and celebrating those who need some more time to develop before hitting all of the choreography...
  • How to prepare yourself mentally to level up on the podium
  • What is required to reach the next level (gives me goosebumps to hear KG talk about it in this clip- because it has arrived for her!!)
  • And, music/playlisting so you don't just create for those you think you might be in the room.

20 Feb 20235 Things to do Before Spending (Wasting) Time Playlisting00:16:03

*Instructor Magic closes tonight at midnight- use code FEB50 for your final offer to slide in before the next round!*

I might have juuuuust ruffled some feathers with this episode title... but hear me out.

The real title is: No One Cares About Your Playlist As Much As You Do... Here's 5 Things to Focus On Instead.

^ that might have ruffled even more feathers.

I constantly get asked "how much time" I spend on my playlists, and the answer usually surprises people: 20 minutes, probably less.

Why? I have a system that works- and once repeated, I simply don't need to focus on the order of my music or even the tracks themselves.

So if you're spending 2 hours on your playlist, here's your quick and dirty episode with FIVE things you should be doing instead to enhance your rider experience:

1) Memorize everyone's names (or 4 - 5)
2) Re-work an existing song you have in your archive by flipping the tempo and adding new choreography
3) Come up with new themes for the next month
4) Spend time before and after the ride connecting with people, sending DMs
5) Consume books, podcasts, and look for quotes to inspire you with new motivation to sprinkle throughout your ride/class

Get out your notebooks and listen to this very niche instructor rant on rider experience > playlisting!

05 Mar 2023Ugly Growth and Becoming Wild + Worthy with Subconscious Freedom Coach Andrea Kauenhowen01:06:43

What if you could forgive yourself and realize you did exactly what you needed to survive?
What if you could dig into your grief and use it to create art and gifts for the world? What if processing your emotions and becoming aware - not a bigger title or job or money- was the biggest key to happiness?
What if healing was actually learning how to hold pain?

These are just SOME of the questions my guest and I talk about today, where we  dig into the hardest experiences of our lives and how they've shaped us to be coaches with a desire to impact the world.

Andrea is a trauma-informed, subconscious freedom coach & host of the uglygrowth podcast.

She offers 1 on 1 mentorship and group programs for changemakers that desire to break self-sabotage and dissolve limiting beliefs, so that they can create new habits, confidently share their gifts, and magnetize their desires.

Today's episode covers a wide gamit of topics with the goal of inspiring you to know that you can go through the hardest, ugliest experience of your life - use them - and transform them to support your greatest purpose.

Trigger warning: grief and plant medicine is discussed (psychedelics).

This episode I share my experiences with hustling with intention, how to schedule in rest, how to celebrate, and how the hustle season will set you up for a CEO season: with grit, work ethic, and hustling above the norm... without getting burnt out.

08 Apr 202310 Things Affecting Your Class Numbers (and What to Do About Them)00:32:33

One of the HARDEST jobs we have as instructors or coaches is to look at how many people sign up for our classes and figure out what’s going to make MORE of them come back.

And, sometimes the reasons they don’t show up has NOTHING to do with you.

(Like a snowstorm in April 🙄)

In my latest podcast episode I talk about 10 Things that can affect your numbers and why-

And what do do about them so you can feel confident the next time you open your schedule and see how many bikes are filled 🎉

The TLDR:

  1. Weather
  2. Seasons of the year
  3. Studio Campaigns/Challenges
  4. Class time
  5. If your class is before or after a popular theme or instructor
  6. If there’s a new instructor at your studio
  7. A holiday
  8. If there’s a major concert or event happening in the city
  9. Whether you have a theme
  10. If you’re co-leading with someone else

20 Jul 2023Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry00:35:14

My take on Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry?

Sometimes, it's bullshit.

Stay with me: I don't think it should be.

In fact, I think Community Over Competition is the thing that makes group fitness magic. It's what quiets the ego, centers our clients/riders, and lifts everyone up.

It moves our entire industry forward and therefore helps more people have the lifechanging impact we know is possible through group fitness.

But sometimes, people use it as a slogan for a shirt without actually embodying what it MEANS to say, Community>Competition.

Or, we ourselves can slide into competing with our own team, being passive-aggressive when riders/clients share they're going to another studio, or fail to celebrate the achievements of others.

EPISODE OVERVIEW:

In this episode, I give an update on my life for the last 8 weeks (PS, it's been rocky... and I might cry for just a second in the intro), share where I'm going, and a metaphor for coming out of the darkness.

Around 11 minutes in, I share my TOP takeaways for embodying Community over Competition even when your ego tries to push you into comparing and competing with others.

Top takeaways:

  • Celebrate your team (instructors). Their success doesn't mean you won't have it too.
  • Encourage your riders/clients to expand their modalities and workouts
  • Plan a group workout to go to another studio with your riders, instructors, etc.
  • Allow yourself to be inspired by the success of others
  • As a studio: don't market your community by encouraging others to leave the ones they're currently a part of (a la SoulCycle/Peloton)

03 Aug 2023When to Quit: Burnout, Breaks, and Toxic Studios00:26:58

If you're dragging yourself to the studio (or your workplace) and have a deep feeling that you might be "done" with teaching... This episode is for you.

In this quick, straight-to-the-point chat I dive into the sensitive topic of recognizing when it's time to make a change in your life, whether you're an indoor cycling instructor or anyone facing burnout and challenges.

I even get personal about the time I should have left a workplace sooner than I did, and how it's affected me since.

Whether you're an indoor cycling instructor OR someone who has a niggling feeling that it might be time to quit, this episode is for you.

STUDIO SALES ACCELERATOR: AUGUST 20 WORKSHOP REGISTRATION

RESOURCES MENTIONED:

  • The Big Leap by Gaye Hendricks
  • Crucial Conversations book

🎙️ Episode Highlights:

  1. Recognizing Burnout: Are you just disinterested or truly done? Pay attention to how long you've been feeling this way and whether it's a consistent feeling of being over it.
  2. Physical and Mental Symptoms: Identify the physical and mental symptoms you experience, like migraines or chronic stress, as they can be indicators that it's time for a break.
  3. The Zone of Genius: We talk about how to recognize the difference between operating in your "zone of excellence" (where you excel but might not be fully passionate) and your "zone of genius" (where you feel aligned, energized, and creative).
  4. Toxic Work Environment: Toxicity can take a toll on your confidence and well-being for years to come- and one of the few situations where I recommend getting the F out as soon as humanly possible.
  5. Taking a Break: Sometimes, all you need is a break to recharge and get creatively inspired. Take time away from the usual routine to rediscover your passion.
  6. Reducing Your Schedule: A reduced schedule can be liberating and help you focus on your strengths and other side hustles that bring you joy.
  7. Positive Closure: Leave on a high note if you feel it's time to move on. Don't be afraid to take a hiatus; remember, you can always return.

Quitting or taking a break is not a sign of failure but a courageous step toward personal growth and self-care. Tune in to gain insights and discover the best path for you! 🎧🚴‍♀️

21 Aug 2023Creative Inspiration vs. Copycats: How to Give Credit as a Coach or Creator and What to Do if Your Work Has Been Plagiarized00:48:34

Creative Copycats, Plagiarism, and Drawing the Line Between Inspiration and Imitation as a Coach and Creator

Have you ever felt the sting of seeing your original work, choreography, social media post or ideas taken or copied... without being given credit?

Flat out: it sucks, and it can feel like you've been robbed of something.

And in the realm of social media and online communities where content reels reign, trends are fast, and you don't even know who the original creator IS- it's not *always* intentional.

In this episode, I share my experiences with being copied as a creator, how I responded, and how you can both avoid it and address it if you ever find yourself in the same position.

A note: this episode isn't talking about plagiarism in the post-secondary education sphere, or, to provide any legal advice regarding  copyright infringements.

Resources mentioned:
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert - the phenomenon of two people having the same unique idea.
Terms & Conditions and Copyright Agreements - I use Contracts Market for all of my legal agreements.

Key takeaways:

  • The difference between inspiration and plagiarism
  • How to give credit when you're inspired by someone else
  • How to approach someone when you'd like to collaborate, duplicate, or work with someone's original concept
  • How to address someone when you feel that they've copied or duplicated your work
  • Examples of what this can look like in social media, indoor cycling, and work

20 Feb 2024How to master taking hard feedback and being called the 'easy' instructor00:20:59

Ever felt the sting of being called 'the easy instructor'? Or, on the other hand, "the hard" instructor?

Whatever the label, taking feedback from someone who doesn't exactly vibe with your class format can feel hard, and it's come up multiple times in my Instructor Magic community.

In this episode, we talk about what to do when this happens, what it means, how to adjust (and if you should), and another perspective that might be just what you need.

Key Takeaways:

  • Navigating Feedback: Insights into handling feedback, especially when it challenges our perceptions of our teaching style.
  • The Art of Accessibility: Strategies for making group fitness classes accessible and aspirational for a diverse range of abilities. *Note, we talk about this on a scale of beginner to veteran, not necessarily to adjust to disabilities or other considerations when talking about accessibility.
  • Beyond the Trends: A critical look at how fitness trends can shape our teaching but might not always align with what participants need or want.
  • Community Building: The importance of creating an inclusive environment where everyone, from first-timers to seasoned enthusiasts, feels welcome and valued.
  • Personal Reflections: A candid discussion on personal growth, dealing with conflicting feedback, and finding one's unique voice in the fitness industry.
  • Instructor Magic Community: An invitation to join a supportive community dedicated to empowering fitness instructors through connection, mentorship, and shared experiences.

29 Mar 2024Fitpros & Finances: the Pay Transparency Project00:20:15

Ever wonder what group fitness instructors get paid?

Or... if what you're getting paid is "industry standard?"

To my knowledge, there's little-to-no information widely available on the average pay scales for instructors, coaches, or the junior-to-lead instructor promotion.

In this episode, I'm opening up the conversation about pay transparency in our industry and start to share results from my new project, the Fit Pro Pay Transparency Project, where I'm collecting survey responses from group fitness instructors from around the world until April 15.

We also talk about:

  • Why instructors should get paid commission or bonuses
  • Contractors vs. employees
  • Finances for fitpros
  • How it's not the studio vs. instructors
  • Why transparency helps everyone understand expectations

Listen as we commiserate over the mortifying moments of missing beat drops, the "me vs. me" battles, finding confidence on the mic and the amazing responsibility of having a platform and a podium.

We shout out some of our favourite riders, Motivators, and spin idols (Casey's line of the episode: "if you're listening, I love you") answer some burning rider Qs like "can you see us not hitting the beat?"

Casey inspires us all and is here to help you to believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams.

09 Mar 2021Instructor Mastery Series: How Visualization is Your Key to Confidence00:17:23

What if I told you that simply visualizing your success would make it happen?

(Would you spend a few minutes with your imagination?)

Spoiler: it's true. Researchers have proven visualization to dramatically improve performance when you spend time envisioning success (and how it feels, sounds, tastes, etc.).

High-performance athletes have done this for YEARS and in today's episode I share how I first came to use this practice (nearly 20 years ago!) and have continued to use it as a pre-ride ritual to improve my confidence before I teach.

I'll take you through a visualization exercise you need to listen to before you teach, talk about how and when you should use it, and how to adapt and scale to other activities in your life.

Whew. This episode has been one in the making for months, and the result of a manifestation of a trip and a dream to meet Kristina Girod, CEO and Chief Motivation Officer of Power + Flow in Scottsdale Arizona.

02 Jan 2022How Online Offerings are the Key to Doubling Your Salary in 202200:40:01

Okay, hear me out.

Are you in the time-for-money trade? (Not sure? The answer is probably yes).

This means you get paid for your time, instead of your offerings. Think 1:1 services, or having a set salary for your time.

Symptoms? Burnout, realizing you're not hitting revenue goals but can't increase them, feeling like there's got to be more than what you're doing in order to increase your salary.

You can double your salary without ditching your 9-5 and the way to do this is by creating an online offering with massive profitability.

In this episode I give listeners the down and dirty 45 minute overview on what exactly online courses are, questions and considerations for how to come up with your first online offering, and the potential revenue available to you.

I *also* get real about who shouldn't be a coach/course creator... and, who absolutely should.

Ready to take action on your new course or online offer idea? I'm launching an accelerator program that  teaches you how to create, launch, and scale your course using only organic marketing (no ads) strategies... think of it as your A-Z plan.

If you're interested in doubling your salary this year, hop into my DMs and let's chat.

PSST: Instructor Magic is also launching, friends. Head to this link to jump into a free webinar to get to know me and ask me anything about how to get to waitlisted classes.
