16 Mar 2025 | Ep.219 - Aviation furniture with Stu Art | 00:55:35
In this episode, we look at how aviation and aerospace items are converted to art and furniture pieces, and we welcome Stuart Abbot, the founder of Stu Art Furniture. Stuart trained as an Airframe Engineer in the RAF working on the Tornado F3. After leaving the RAF he continued as an airframe engineer with several international airlines and started Stu Art Furniture in 2012. His products are all hand-made and original and more affordable than some recent market entrants copying the model. His pieces are shipped all around the world and Stuart has appeared on TV multiple times, showcasing his pieces from airliner wheel coffee tables to jet fighter tail fin desks. 02 Apr 2023 | Ep.169 - Confessions of a Flying Instructor, with Tug Wilson | 01:21:33
‘Confessions of a Flying Instructor: Teaching the RAF’s Fighter Pilots’ is Tug Wilson’s second book and he joins us to discuss the time in his career teaching new fighter pilots. As always, Tug is great company with Gareth in this sometimes hilarious, and at other times frightening, story of his time as a flight instructor. Tug Wilson grew up in North Yorkshire and in 1985, his dream came true when he joined the RAF. He was selected to fly the mighty Phantom for his first tour. After raging around for three years at the frontline, Wilson became a tactics and flying instructor on the BAE Systems Hawk. Following this, he was extremely lucky in securing an exchange tour with the US Marine Corps flying the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet in California. His final flying tour was on the Tornado F3. ‘Confessions of a Phantom Pilot: Memories of Flying the Phantom FGR2’ was Tug’s first book. On our Journalist’s Roundtable discussion in Ep.161 (Trust Me I’m an Aviation Journalist), Rich Cooper mentioned the visit to a North Korea Airshow. We wanted to find out more and Rich introduced us to author and photographer, Gerry Manning, who was there. Gerry joins us to share the experience and we talk airliners and fighter jets as well as helicopters, cargo lifters and microlights. All sourced from behind the ‘iron curtain’! We also explore the food, culture and history of North Korea, as Gerry takes us back through a trip to a “once in a lifetime” air show. 20 Aug 2023 | Ep.182 - Hazard Spectrum with Nathan Gray | 01:13:19
We continue our Test Pilot series with Commander Nathan Gray, who joins us to talk about his book ‘Hazard Spectrum’. With over 140 combat missions to his name, he is among the most decorated pilots in the British armed forces and we share Nathan’s journey to the top of the Fleet Air Arm, from student to F-35 Test Pilot. But, the episode starts with the sobering account of how he walked away from an ‘unsurvivable’ crash at RAF Wittering, which sadly killed his instructor. Nathan is one of the humblest heroes we have had the pleasure to interview. He is also one of our most talented pilots, flying and test flying with the Fleet Air Arm for over two decades on various aircraft including the Harrier, F-15, F-16, F-18, and of course F-35. His career has taken him from the Californian coast of the United States to war zones in the Middle East. Nathan was part of the ground-breaking F-35 development program and conducted the first-ever F-35 launch and recovery on the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. He has also qualified as a commando green beret, paratrooper, and forward air controller. This is an unmissable episode! 19 Feb 2023 | Ep.167 – Indian Airmen and the IAF in WW2 (Part 2) | 00:49:12
In the second part of our feature Sree (KS Nair) talks to us about IAF Training, aircraft types and ground attack tactics. We expose some of the challenges around motivation as well as culture and work through the quote from many at the time that “The Indian Air Force was an experiment that was never meant to succeed”. K.S. NAIR is the son and son-in-law of Indian Air Force officers. He is a graduate of IIT Delhi and IIM Bangalore, and a former director and CEO of multinational consulting firms. But, beyond that, he has been a lifelong student of Indian aviation history. He has collected aviation-related material with an India connection from around the globe. He counts himself fortunate to have grown up around people who played key roles in some of the Air Force’s finest hours (as well as some of its most difficult), and having met several key figures from the periods he writes about. He has published a number of articles on the Indian armed forces in Indian, American and British journals. This is his second book; his first, ‘Ganesha’s Flyboys’ (2012), covered the Indian Air Force’s role in the first-ever UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo (where they were succeeded in their UN role by a detachment of Swedish Saab J29 Tunnans). His third book, published in mid-2022, covers the Indian armed forces’ role in the independence of Bangladesh. 05 Feb 2023 | Ep.165 - China in space with Brian Harvey | 00:57:38
The story of China is space is not one widely known nor properly understood in Western corridors, although China of course has been launching rockets for almost a thousand years. In this episode we welcome back author and Chinese space expert Brian Harvey to help us address that. In 2019, China astonished the world by landing a spacecraft and rover on the far side of the Moon, something never achieved by any country before. China had already become a leading spacefaring nation alongside the United States and Russia, sending men and women into orbit, building a space laboratory (Tiangong) and sending probes to the Moon and asteroids. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions’ (CAeS) is an established aerospace business of over 33 years, with 100+ staff and is one of very few aerospace SMEs globally to have both whole aircraft concept design capability and to hold a range of regulatory approvals for the design and manufacture of modifications to existing aircraft. CAeS is based at Cranfield Airport, Bedfordshire, UK where the company has access to some of the UK’s most advanced aviation test and research facilities. Phase 1 of their roadmap is “Project Fresson” – the conversion of a Britten-Norman Islander 9-seat aircraft from conventional fossil fuel to that of gaseous hydrogen propulsion. This development is set to deliver the world’s first fully certified, truly green, passenger-carrying aircraft using hydrogen fuel cell technology. The end solution will deliver emissions-free commercial air travel and is planned to be certified for passenger flight in 2026. CAeS ultimate ambition is to become an aircraft designer and manufacturer of zero emissions aircraft. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions

Samuel de Korte is a graduate student of Utrecht University, where he studied an MA in the Cultural History of Modern Europe. He wrote his Master's thesis about the representation of black Americans during the Second World War, indicating that although they formed a substantial part of the American armed forces, they don't receive an equal share in the representation in contemporary media. His new book ‘Tuskegee Airmen - Dogfighting with the Luftwaffe and Jim Crow’ is published by Pen and Sword.
We focus on the human and personal issues they faced. If unfamiliar with the events, this can be a sensitive issue that some might find uncomfortable. The presenter and guest views are their own and not those of the podcast or publisher (or others associated with this episode).

11 Aug 2024 | Ep.207 - Cold War Coastal Command Chapter 10 - The Threat | 00:47:29
At the end of World War Two RAF Coastal Command faced the same challenges of all the British military services, one of reduction, cutbacks and a return to a peaceful world. The threat from the axis powers had been effectively squashed but there was a new threat emerging, in the form of the Soviet Union. Coastal Command had to start learning about new adversaries once again, adapting and performing immediately, to protect British interests initially in the northern Atlantic, but rapidly elsewhere. For almost 60 Cold War years, the RAF relied heavily on two aircraft types, through various models, enhancements and sheer longevity. The Avro Shackleton and the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod. Chris Gibson author of the brilliant book ‘Nimrod's Genesis’, joins us to help understand the new threat and explain to process the UK took to replace its old aircraft with new more sophisticated platforms.

Consider for a moment repairing and loading aircraft at -30 degrees with no cover, flying in thick cloud through heavy flak and snow with no idea if you might get through or even deliver your precious cargo. Robert Forsyth talks us through the Luftwaffe’s Stalingrad Airlift, a less well-known event in the tragic Stalingrad story. He brings to life the challenges, horror and heroism of the pilots and crews who tried to save those trapped in the ‘pocket’. His new book is published by Osprey Publishing and is available now on our Bookshop and is called ‘To Save An Army: The Stalingrad Airlift’. Robert is an author, editor and publisher specialising in historic military aviation. He set up his own publishing company in 1994 to publish his first book and has gone on to write more than thirty titles on the aircraft, campaigns and units of the Luftwaffe, an interest he has held since boyhood. 30 Oct 2022 | Ep.155 - RAF Morpeth and Northumberland Airfields | 00:44:13
Graeme Rendall returns to tell us the story behind the airfield at RAF Morpeth. In World War Two, RAF Morpeth was extremely important to Bomber and Coastal Commands, as the station was home to an Air Gunners School which trained airmen how to shoot effectively whilst in mid-air. Trained gunners were constantly in demand and often in short supply. Many of the pilots of the training aircraft based at Morpeth were from other Allied nations and Graeme gives us a really interesting view of operations at the airfield. Post-war, like many airfields, it lost its status and faded away with only relics remaining today. Graeme also gives us an insight to his other three Northumberland airfield books, from air crashes to storage facilities. Recorded 15th September 2022 Graeme Rendall

12 Feb 2023 | Ep.166 - Indian Airmen and the IAF in WW2 (Part 1) | 00:44:43
The air war in India and Burma (World War Two) has not received the focus it deserves. In this episode we talk to author K.S. Nair (Sree) to look at this area of conflict, the contribution made to the allied efforts in both WW1 and WW2, as well as the evolution and early operations of the Indian Air Force. This is his second book; his first, Ganesha’s Flyboys (2012), covered the Indian Air Force’s role in the first-ever UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo (where they were succeeded in their UN role by a detachment of Swedish Saab J29 Tunnans). His third book, published in mid-2022, covers the Indian armed forces’ role in the independence of Bangladesh.
