We did some shopping over the holiday weekend and you lucky folks get to reap the rewards! For the first time, we cover POWER PACK, a book about four kids bestowed with super-powers by a dying alien horse. In this issue, Dr. Doom wants those powers so he sends Typhoid Mary to infatuate the blatantly underage Alex Power and Alex’s Doonesbury-looking dad into fighting over her crazy ass while she steals the secret to anti-matter control or something. It doesn’t go well so Mary goes back to Dr. Doom and ruins his couch but somehow is not immediately incinerated for doing so. She totally owes him a new couch.

Superboy [vol 2] #38 (1983)

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Superboy’s celebrating Thanksgiving here as well by ignorantly starving a prison filled with malcontent boys, roasting albino turkeys with his eyes and then hiding in the basement of the Kent’s house like he’s Eddie Munster’s pet dragon Spot. Then he goes all street justice on Lex Luthor instead of staying home and eating his weight in Stove Top Stuffing like he should.

We also give our thoughts on the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie and we get a bit spoiler-y. Not too bad but its worth a heads up.

Secret Defenders #15 (1994)

Doctor Strange is stuck in a sanctum beneath the earth’s core and he has no facial hair so he is not equipped to handle his usual Secret Defenders duties. He calls upon general scumbag hero Doctor Druid and his immense Rogaine top-knot to defend the earth against Malachi, the villainess with Wolverine hair and giant hoop earrings. Joining the team is Chicago art museum security guard for hire Luke Cage and Kathy Ireland paramour Deadpool. All the painting and sculptures start coming alive so the situation gets wacky real fast.

Secret Weapons #4 (1993)

Its our first foray into the Valiant Comics universe and surprisingly, its not an issue of ARCHER & ARMSTRONG seeing how every dollar box ever in any comic book store is 50% ARCHER & ARMSTRONG. ARCHER & ARMSTRONG is like ALPHA FLIGHT but its wearing a newsie cap.

No, this week we cover SECRET WEAPONS, which is supposed to be Valiant’s AVENGERS-esque title but the main hitters (Solar, Ninjak) are only there for a minute while we fart around with the other geeks. This issue focuses on Stronghold, a mass-absorbing Hank Pym lookalike that gets so huge that he takes a nap in the East River. Also, a scientist eats a brain like that heart-eating doctor in JASON GOES TO HELL and a group of thugs get punted to death.

Secret Origins [vol 2] #21 (1987)

Two stories in one today as we first explore the origin of infamous cowboy corpse, Jonah Hex. Twisted curio collector Ian McKellan and hired goon Donal Logue are here to shake down Jonah’s elderly wife for rights to his stuffed corpse but ’92 Jeff Goldblum is here to save the day.

Then later, we learn about the original Black Condor. Starting out as an obese baby, Condor became irradiated by a meteor and learned to fly, going around fighting eagles and stuff. He makes his way to America where he assumes a senator’s identity despite only meeting, like, one other non-bird human in his entire life.

World’s Finest #110 (1960)

In the further adventures an insane billionaire and his alien madman friend, Bats and Supes encounter an alien who is trying to run a real estate scheme on an asteroid by miniaturizing attractions across the galaxy and starting up his own Epcot Center gimmick (but in SPACE)

Things go from worse to even worse when said alien entrepreneur absorbs part of Robin’s life essence into his mirror stomach and Batman has to drive the Batmobile in reverse to save him. Meanwhile, Superman punches a bunch of holes in a community water line because he’s an idiot.

Superman #372 (1982)

We’re back with more summer fun as Superman encounters a radioactive Alex Trebek, who unleash an anti-matter splotch on the Earth. You see, his government-issued android children were killed in a tidal wave so its up to Superman to take Alex Trebek back in time to save his "kids."

Also, we catch up with Jimmy Olsen in 2021 where there are flying cars and stuff. Superman Jr Jr saves the day by ditching a girl on a date because she didn’t know what an ice cream cone was.

Fallen Angels #5 (1987)

FALLEN ANGELS is NOT a comic about all the wayward daughters that Brett Michaels sang about. It’s basically a Sunspot back door pilot where he putzes around with the techno alien Warlock in (I think) the Bowery, joining up the Vanisher and soon-to-be X-Force randoms Siryn and Boom Boom to commit petty crimes. Bobby’s not into it though so in this issue we just focus on Devil Dinosaur getting loose and some cyborg kid that looks like Peter Billingsley attempting to corral her cybernetic lobsters. Spoiler: one of the lobsters die, but not by being eaten.

Defenders #43 (1977)

The fun times keep rolling along for Marvel’s favorite non-team as the Cobalt Man’s about to explode and all the Hulk wants to do is punch the radioactive villain in the face. Thankfully, Knighthawk (who is still shirtless) has a better solution. 

We also have Egghead unleashing his lethal egg-based offense with surprisingly efficient results, Luke Cage yeeting an agitated George Lucas, Rhino busting out a pre-Nicholson THE SHINING bit and the debut of Dr. Strange as the slightly problematic (but admittedly well-dressed) Red Rajah!

All this plus we chat about Hellstorm from the 90s and the new, underwhelming THUNDERBOLTS trailer.

Saga of the Swamp Thing #4 (1982)

Happy Halloween Month! In honor of the spooky season, we start a run on some pre-Alan Moore SWAMP THING because nothing is more frightening than a moist, musty man covered in moss.

Here, Swamp Thing finds himself in the back of a watermelon transport and is dumped in the path of a child-murdering demon. We also get a large helping of media accountability, DEATH TO SMOOCHY comparisons and swamp monster flexibility.

As a bonus, there’s even a backup tale with Phantom Stranger posting for lucha libre bumps in a hospital rampant with occult-fueled surgeons.

Captain America #413 (1993)

It has been long overdue but we finally make our way back to LADY MALL~! as Cap and Diamondback try to take down MODAM and the Femizons. In this issue, Cap fights a literal who’s who of jabroni villains including Batroc, Stilt-Man, the previously dead Ringer, Man-Ape, Man-BULL and maybe even Man-Puss. Cap gets creepy with MODAM and shows off his muscular taint. Meanwhile, Falcon and Shang-Chi split an Orange Julius because LADY MALL~!

Poison Elves #19 (1996)

POISON ELVES was a super-indie cult comic about, well, elves that like to dress up like ninjas and seek vengeance against other elves and maybe some humans. 

In this particular issue, Lusiphur the Assassin Elf drops some serious ultra-violence on a warehouse full of villains (?) that may or may not have killed his father and caused his mother to get gangrene in her foot.

Defenders #42 (1976)

Oh man….the Defenders are back on WCE, baby! This is a wacky arc (as most Defenders books tend to feature) where Doctor Strange gets transfixed by a mystical ruby like he’s Kevin Garnett in UNCUT GEMS. He also gets super ageist towards his friend’s courier and skips out on the Defenders while they fend off Cobalt Man.

We also got Egghead stealing an ENTIRE NASA space station, Nighthawk spontaneously combusting like he’s Brad Dourif or something and Hulk dressing up as an incognito Ninja Turtle.

All this plus we chat about the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble, picture puzzles and the dog from MARRIED WITH CHILDREN.

Adventure Comics #450 (1977)

In our last book of the year, we take a look at something from Aquaman’s ADVENTURE COMICS run where a crippling tragedy DIDN’T happen. Here, Arthur takes on the Weather Wizard, who has stolen a secret government sex toy that will help him defeat The Flash. A bunch of nonsense happens in the Bermuda Triangle and we ultimately conclude that an octopus makes a terrible babysitter. 

We also have a short back-up story with Martian Manhunter avenging the death of his muppet friend. Apparently, the murderer was an Earth human and J’onn runs afoul of Supergirl, who fights him off in various sexy poses. This is a surprisingly erotic book.

Batman/Superman #13 (2014)

Back to the superhero comics grind as we cover some DC farts from the 21st century! (WAVE OF THE FUTURE)

Batman and Superman are both amnesiacs all of sudden, shuttled violently into a Gotham that looks like blighted as all hell. Clark is naked (but not afraid) helping Catwoman beat up some garbage androids while Bruce is discovering his wealth and gadgets all over again. We also find the filthiest bathroom in all of Gotham, a feat unto itself.

Daredevil #163 (1979)

The Hulk rolls into town as we carry on with Daredevil not being so much “marked for death” as he is “marked for some really bad publicity” as Ben Urich closes in on his identity. Not only that, but DD has to deal with Bruce Banner spiking his fine china like a football, Foggy telling dirty jokes to priests and disco dudes sweeping up his ex-girlfriends. It will all be well if you just keep your cool on the subway and don’t let Mean Gene Okerlund put out his cigar on your jacket

The Brave and The Bold # 147 (1979)

Batman teams up with Supergirl to take down a bunch of sun-worshipping jobbers lead by comic book’s worst person Doctor Light. Somehow, these guys stuck a giant cannon on a Wayne Enterprises satellite when Bruce was taking a dump or something. 

Also, Batman is SO TOUGH he survives a brief float-around in actual outer space. He’s the toughest man alive.

Defenders #44 (1977)

Man, the Incredible Hulk can be an incredible pain in the ass sometimes. Presently apoplectic that Doctor Strange, the only solution is for the rest of the Defenders to track him down. Unbeknownst to them, Doctor Strange is now the Red Rajah, an entity focused on bringing Manhattan together as one big think tank whether they want to or not!

We also got Valkyrie’s ex-husband stumbling into the Sanctorum, Russia telling Red Guardian to get her ass back home and Patsy Walker aka Hellcat interjecting herself into the team dynamic after a peyote quest on Titan.

All this plus Jen and Shawn visit a 90’s museum exhibit and feel really ancient afterwards.

Blackwulf #1 (1994)

Green Arrow [vol 3] #28 (2003)

For a while, Ollie was dead because he got his hand stuck in a bomb and it exploded while Superman watched. Thankfully for his buddy Hal, Green Arrow is BACK, chasing down Orc-looking Doomsday monsters in the Pacific Northwest with son Connor Hawke. Also, Ollie’s on a break with Dinah (shrug emoji) and hooks up with Black Lightning’s niece. In the end, Ollie gets crucified with his own arrows by a tall assassin who looks like a dweeb.

X-Men 2099 #19 (1995)

We get thrust into the mediocre world of 2099 as Meanstreak helps save Halloween Jack’s casino from Channing Tatum on Bane venom while Krystalin jailbreaks a Jonathan Taylor Thomas-looking brat for cyber-reasons. That would be a great title for a 2099 book….CYBER REASONS 2099. Throw ‘em all in there and see what happens — Spider-Ham 2099, Channing Tatum 2099, Billy Ray Cyrus 2099. Have them all fight for holographic space credits on a pole or something.

Comics’ Greatest World: Out Of The Vortex #1 (1993)

Oh man, time for some Dark Horse comics! In this offering, an alien in a dope-looking outfit appears out of nowhere in a military base located in Cinnabar Flats, Nevada. “Cinnabar” makes us think of cinnamon which is appropriate because our alien guy (Vortex the Heretic) encounters opposition in the form of space spartans carrying electric Eggo waffles. When it's all said and done, a big bubble of lethal toothpaste envelopes the base while our alien antihero makes a brave Army lieutenant his “space secretary.”

Action Comics #444 (1975)

Happy All Saints Day! This week, we check in with Superman and as it turns out, he killed Green Lantern. Spoiler alert: not really. Green Lantern just kayfabed his death so that he can keep Sinestro from dressing him up like Leo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover. Superman’s got other stuff to worry about, like his constant emission of Cinnaburst flavor crystals and Steve Lombard throwing shade at him from a convertible for being too damn boring.

We have no idea what L.E.G.I.O.N. stands for (Licensed Extra-Governmental Interstellar Operatives Network - I looked it up) but it certainly doesn’t spell a cohesive comic that we would continue to read. 

Well, let’s walk that back a bit. There are some good gags and Lobo is only in it for a few panels and is used quite well. But essentially, this is a stop-gap issue where L.E.G.I.O.N. throws a party on a planet inhabited by blue war bunnies and it ends up all going sideways because space aliens. There’s also this hipster Leatherface dude that serves as muscle for a chunky guy dressed in an ill-fitting bellboy costume who would most certainly be played by comedian Eddie Pepitone in the DCEU version of this comic. Not sure if its enough for us to buy in. Maybe if Eddie played his character from the excellent YouTube comedy strip PUDDIN, there might be a sale.

X-Man #20 (1996)

X-MAN is about Nate, who looks like a Chad and has some serious telepathic / telekinetic powers. He’s probably related to Cyclops or Cable somehow but hell if we know what’s going on there. In this issue, he squares off against Abomination and some stereotypically New York sewer mutants over the safety of Threnody, a young careless mutant who stole Nate’s jacket.

Silver Surfer #1 (1968)

So, ok, this is a REALLY GOOD comic book and not the worst of our collection BUT there is a lot to pick apart and make fun of because, my goodness, is Silver Surfer a dramatic boy! Join us as we talk about the Surfer’s first ongoing book where we learn about how extra he was as young Norrin Radd on Zenn-La. Dude was SO BORED on a planet full of peace and art and prosperity. He wanted to fly around and look under rocks that he shouldn’t just because HE didn’t earn it. Brother — take up knitting or something. Thank goodness for Galactus swinging by to eat their planet. 

We also got annoyed fish, battling Yetis, knowledge being beamed right into the skull and Shalla-Bal attempting to chokeslam herself out of grief. It’s all here and it’s going to be RAD(D)!

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #31 (2024)

Trying out some of the NEW comics this week as we discuss the latest iteration of WORLD’S FINEST! 

It’s time to watch the eclipse from the JLA Watchtower! Superman’s got his Dippin’ Dots, Batman’s got a dumb look on his face and about half of the JLA is possessed by Eclipso. It’s all because Bruce Gordon doesn’t know how to use Dr. Light’s Rolodex Gun. 

We also witness bear witness to Green Arrow’s superhuman feats of strength (LIVE ON CBS!), the Atom trampling through Flash’s brain and we finally share our thoughts on MADAME WEB (and PEARL if you like horror movies and random Superman cameos)

Metal Men [vol 2] #1 (1993)

After a period of semi-obscurity, the Metal Men are BACK with a new mini-series that was certainly intended to bring about a new ongoing but ultimately didn’t. Probably had to do with Doc Magnus’s new grumpy 90s attitude and affinity for big modern laser guns. But hey, at least the United States got to make Australia jealous by housing a meteor AND playing host to Superman’s death. WE’RE NUMBER ONE!

Teen Titans Spotlight #19 (1988)

Starfire and Nightwing move in together and immediately Kory fills their giant flat with framed pictures of Dick and really tiny pictures of Donna Troy. She gets bored and flies around the city, ruining a helicopter lesson and crossing paths with a ghost-self Harbinger. Thankfully for Harbinger, Starfire arrives just in time to help her out in battling cyborg’d young Keith Olberman in a Manhunter robot (because Millennium)

Defenders #63 (1978)

Its our 300th episode! Thank you for joining us here on the podcast each week for the past six (!) years.

To celebrate, we jump into a Defenders book where every C-level hero (and Captain Marvel for some reason) got the impression it was fair game to become a Defender. Hulk peaces out pretty quick, leaving Valkyrie, Hercules and Knighthawk to lead an offensive against villains in NYC. Hellcat drives a Barbie car, Hellstorm gets threatened with a lawsuit and Hercules calls some dude a cabbage. It makes as about as much sense as you think.

It’s a brand-new run of books as we jump into some Marvel Team-Up. This week, Spider-Man links up with our friend Beast to fight off the vengeance-seeking Professor Power. The good professor here is mad that another professor (Professor X) did a botch job on his catatonic son’s mind so now he wants to take it out on everything X-Men adjacent. All this plus Hank McCoy’s intolerant mother, Romans versus hillbillies and a special cameo from Adrienne Barbeau!

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #19 (1991)

Batman has finally kicked the horse meat and is ready to take on the Professor and the General in Santa Prisca! It’s going to be wild though because juiced-up men in jumpsuits (Nailz?) are under hypnosis to murder the island inhabitants, pop their heads and disintegrate their necks. Batman and Alfred seek to intervene Alfred get abducted, dangled from a helicopter and strung up for shark bait. It is up to Batman to get partially nude, sacrifice some innocent civilians and save his butler. Can he do it? I’d like to think so.

Saga of the Swamp Thing #6 (1982)

The SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING comes to an end as we finally make it to the Plague Ship, where Swampy encounters a frilly tentacle alien. It gets even wilder when a masquerade ball turns into a cyclops gathering at the stroke of midnight. This is a transitional book of sorts but lots to unpack such as Swamp Thing’s traversing half of the Eastern coastline on foot in a matter of hours and the best way to attack someone with a physician’s bag.

Also, our back-up story sees Phantom Stranger confronts Death in his penthouse to question the accuracy of his scheduling of pretty blond ladies who trip in the street.

Psychoblast #9 (1988)

PSYCHOBLAST is about a dude who melds with some type of powerful entity that only comes out when he sleeps. NO…..it is NOT Sleepwalker! Psychoblast is recognizable via his Best Value Quicksilver costume and “Christopher Walken as Max Shreck” hairstyle. In the last issue of his own series, Psychoblast lies unconscious in a hospital bed like a jabroni while some armored dude annihilates New Order and plans to take over the world with his techno-organic tendrils.

Batman and the Monster Men #5 (2006)

This is allegedly the first time Batman and Hugo Strange square off as Strange farting around Gotham, creating a bunch of mutant Great Khalis. Gordon and Batman are getting to know each other (that’s sweet) and we see the debut of the Bat-Mobile.

Also, we spend a bunch of time remembering GOTHAM on FOX even though we haven’t watched in a year. Did they ever figure out what the deal was with that dinosaur woman who was dating Thomas Wayne? Also, has Gordon been smartened up to the concept of “moshing?”

X-Factor #30 (1988)

Despite the Walt Simonson art, this X-Factor book fails to impress. However, we do have Beast in his “ode to the 1984 San Diego Padres” outfit and Iceman wearing his Asgardian championship belt so not all is lost. Plus, Thomas Haden Church makes an appearance and then promptly explodes (probably from all that star power) and a sentient ship makes chili burgers and it is gross.

Shawn and Jen also review the film QUARTER BIN which is an Amazon Prime indie centered around varied relationships of folks that work at a comic book store in Cleveland. Also, the lead has some serious Wayne Static hair (RIP)

Doom Patrol #117 (1968)

The Doom Patrol split up their group early on here because Niles is too preoccupied with women whilst Robotman lies around looking like Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar and Negative Man suffers from ham deprivation. The minute they all leave, Clint Howard in a purple chicken costume arrives to attack a crippled man with an army of violent hummingbirds. Treachery persists until Doom Patrol is bailed out by a bunch of West Coast Native Americans riding Fire Mares. You know, those horses from KRULL.

Metamorpho: Year One #4 (2008)

We join Rex Mason in his first year as Metamorpho, a being with one leg made of pudding and another made of Miracle Whip. He’s tired of being forced to live in seclusion due to his lack of noise so Simon Stagg gives him a life-like mask and an opportunity to have sex with his daughter. All of this goes sideways and Rex ends up fighting Doc Dread, an opportunistic villain with buxom helicopter pilots and a knack for capitalizing on world disasters.

New Gods [vol 3] #19 (1990)

Darkseid’s dad Yuga Khan is coming to visit so everything needs to be just perfect. The zombies need to bring his angry son Orion from Earth so that he can drain his power. And don’t forget to pay the plump necromancer — though you could probably stiff her. Most importantly, make sure the Grim Reaper on skis sucks the lifeforce out of a well-meaning Italian man. 

If all goes well, Metron might let you use his cosmic toilet.

GUY GARDNER: WARRIOR #0 (1994)

It is our first podcast guest in a LONG time as Shawn's brother -- the mighty Brian Marek -- joins us to talk about pivotal (to Shawn and Brian at least) 90’s comic GUY GARDNER: WARRIOR. It is the Zero Hour issue that reboots Guy as a descendant of a race of peace-keeping aliens who have been traveling the cosmos in a quest to create the perfect, well, warrior. This all gets SUPER body horror pretty quick, with veiny cannon arms and flesh syringes. For the most part, we put this over pretty strongly because the Guy Gardner aesthetic from his era is totally 90s and totally pro wrestling and it’s the best.

All this plus we chat about the Ultimate Warrior’s corpse running amok in the DC Comics offices, Power Girl’s forgotten baby, Guy’s Irish heritage and which foods you should NOT bring to an orgy.

The Outsiders [vol 2] #0 (1994)

Post Zero Hour, when everything’s all screwed up, Eradicator assumes leadership of the Outsiders team in LA. Halo embarrasses herself in front of the youth at the Beverly Center while Looker has a blood smoothie by the pool. Then they all head out of Central America somewhere to confront a white-haired Penn Jillette over the production of violence-fueled “hyper guns.” Eventually, they hook up with Felix Faust’s son and implode a warehouse in Las Vegas.

JLA Classified #6 (2006)

Booster Gold screws around in Doctor Fate’s tower and accidentally sends a bunch of JLAers and himself to Hell. Instead of being melted and tortured by the Spinner of Lies, fast food franchise owner Etrigan approaches them with the option to work at his burger joint and avoid demon slaughter. 

Meanwhile, back on non-Hell Earth (but really, what’s the difference), Power Girl and Guy Gardner get snippy with each other and devise a plan to save their friends. We never get to that plan but we do witness Guy offering to lick Power Girl’s whole face like Rick James in the club.

Justice League Task Force #0 (1994)

We are caught between Easter and Wrestlemania as we head back to the 90s and the one of the #0 issues that surfaced due to DC’s Zero Hour event. In this one, a new Justice League Task Force is formed with the lead character being Martian Manhunter’s arm hair. To that point, I think Jason Mantzoukas could make a great J’onn J’onzz based on hirsuteness alone.

We also discuss old MTV dating shows that Triumph could appear on if his HVAC career doesn’t take off. Also, Gypsy and the Ray continue to be useless while Despero sits there and reads self-help books.

Secret Defenders #16 (1994)

It’s a new run of books as we prep for DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE with some early Deadpool content. Here, our favorite Merc with a Mouth joins up with the Secret Defenders - Doctor Strange’s (and eventually Doctor Druid’s) crew of randomly aligned heroes. Phantom Stranger [Vol 2] #37 (1975)

A hapless cabbie is forced by an escaping crook to run over Phantom Stranger and his skinny legs. When that goes awry, the poor lady gets shot, forcing her loud husband to take an unethical gig faking a sarcophagus. When THAT goes awry, the husband and Phantom Stranger have to walk the plank into a boiling vat of Gatorade. Thankfully, the dude becomes a mad mummy and starts press-slamming villains like Butch Reed. (RIP Butch Reed)

Defenders #56 (1978)

Jen is back and so are we when it comes to beating up on the Defenders so everyone can rejoice!

In this issue, one of Valkyrie’s jobber friends tries to help her out against Lunatik, some alien dude who looks like Jared Leto’s Joker as played by Tekashi 6ix9ine (I had to look up that spelling because I’m old), only to get his skull caved in. Meanwhile in Russia, Bruce Banner desperately tries to not get aroused whilst draining radiation from his fellow Defenders. Also, Namor almost dies because they forget to give him some water.

This ain’t a podcast about doing lots of coke and heroin but we do address that. It’s actually about the New Warriors goof that would indirectly change comics forever. 

SPEEDBALL is also another sub-par Steve Ditko book that we’re covering, featuring anachronistic attire, teenagers murdering Lex Luthor with glue and PTSD-riddled veterans on a rampage versus bloodthirsty beat cops.

Marvel Spotlight #14 (1974)

Daimon Hellstrom returns home from a wild night of being a demon offspring to scare the hell out of his milkman. He gets a call to come to St. Louis to check out a local college’s communications building that has being haunted by ice demons living in the walls and messing with the college radio station playlists. This has been confirmed by the totally teetotaling janitor and some hippies who got hit in the face with their textbooks. Hellstorm then gets his ass kicked and forced to live in David Boreanaz's house.

Daredevil #164 (1980)

We’ve reached the end of this Daredevil “Marked For Death” storyline and it doesn’t appear that we’ve gotten anywhere. All we get here is a DD origin story - which is nice - but what does it have to do with him being targeted?

Anyway, Daredevil shares his life story including tales about his school bully John Cena, how he became a pretzel snob and the time he watched his dad box Morgan Freeman. Also, Ben Urich smokes in a hospital!

Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #1 (1954) / Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #2 (1954)

Jimmy Olson, Superman’s dumbest Earth friend (I don’t know - he might have a Kryptonian equivalent), continues to ruin Superman and Clark Kent’s lives. 

In the first story, Jimmy handles a to-do list for Superman while he’s out saving folks in Switzerland. Instead of, you know, getting pets out of trees, Jimmy opts to mediate a labor dispute using shadow puppets and cheap wigs.

In the second story, Jimmy bodies an interplanetary potion and dreams that he can fly. He uses these powers to join the circus only to tragically drown in front of thousands. RIP Jimmy Olsen.

Batman #163 (1964)

Its two Silver Age Batman stories in one book….aren’t we blessed? 

In the first story, Alfred writes some fanfic (for real) that imagines Dick-Batman and Robin Jr. Jr. teaming up with Batwoman II on Earth-40 to face a mad scientist that failed engineering hard and made a fist-ship that should never fly. Thankfully, 100 lb Batwoman II is a kayfabe linebacker and can tackle steel machines into mobsters with ease.

Avengers West Coast #70 (1991)

We keep it local this week as we cover AVENGERS WEST COAST from 1991. Here, we have Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman farting around in Newport Beach, handling the (presumed) rampant thefts of seafood tapas. Or maybe someone’s double parked at the day spa, preventing Peter Gallagher from getting his eyebrows fluffed. A sad state of affairs in the OC. Glad Spider-Woman’s there.

Also, Tigra and Iron Man go on a date to a bowling alley and we DON’T get to see it, Wonder Man gets huffy that Scarlet Witch won’t get over her non-existent kids and robot husband and Elvira (the vampire lady, not the Oak Ridge Boys song) makes an appearance.

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #17 (1991)

Let’s keep going with the “Venom” storyline here as Batman spirals deeper and deeper into the acrimonious abyss of substance abuse and addiction. Bats is out in the streets — dressed like The Question for some reason — pummeling thugs for intel so hard he (and we) forget why he’s doing it. We also bear witness to Batman expertly throwing a refrigerator at some crooks. It all boils down to super soldiers, orchestrated killings and one really tall teenager.

Adventure Comics #452 (1977)

Guys, we had NO idea that this just happened to be “that one Aquaman story” when picked up this issue of ADVENTURE COMICS. Ah, god. This one doesn’t end on a fun note.

Regardless, we find some joy here like the improbable laminating machine used to hand out Aqualad headshots as well as Black Manta’s plans for a Peter Benchley library.

Haywire #3 (1988)

This book almost ruined us.

Haywire was an early DC “mature readers” offering (pre-Vertigo) about a scruffy dude whose parents get murdered and somehow, he ends up in a psionic suit of armor that looks like a rejected TMNT villain design. Like something Krang would come up with only to have it get dismantled in a single episode.

In this particular issue, Haywire squares off against a BDSM-based villain called Nightlash who pretty much beats him like a jabroni. This book’s narrative and character distinction was very confusing; so much that it gave us both anxiety like when you know you can comprehend something but for some reason, you just CAN’T in that particular instance. It made us feel bad.

Shadowpact #3 (2006)

We’re almost there but Shadowpact is SUPER close to figuring out this Pentacle Plot and saving Wyoming. If only they can escape from their blood prisons with the help of David Lynch and his high standards for villainy.

Marvel Team-Up #125 (1982)

Spider-Man, ever the enterprising fellow, nabs a print endorsement deal for a fast food joint only for Tigra to show up and score the gig with her Charo impression (cuchi cuchi). Tigra then has a date with a beat cop that gets interrupted by Zabo the Diaper Bodyguard. Spider-Man tries to help and makes things worse.

Additionally, we are bestowed a Doctor Strange / Scarlet Witch back-up that sees a confused monster summoned on the set of that fake movie in PET CEMETARY 2 where Eddie Furlong’s mother get electrocuted to death.

Nightstalkers #12 (1993)

Happy belated Halloween everyone!

Nightstalkers was a Midnight Sons joint that featured Blade wearing sheet metal long johns and two other dudes - Hannibal King and Frank Drake - who are very similar. One might be a werewolf, the other might be a vampire. Here, the crew heads from Boston to Nebraska to deal with an EVENT HORIZON situation in a prison headed up by a Porter Wagoner-looking dude with electrical powers. Its like Wes Craven’s SHOCKER without the Alice Cooper/Kane Roberts cameos.

Thunderstrike #13 (1994)

Thunderstrike and Luke Cage team up to track down a former college basketball standout-turned-bison monster into the bowels of a barbershop where a rouge S.H.I.E.L.D. operative whips out his Mandroid. We’ve also got some phone-related action as Luke uses the phone inside of a renovated porno theatre while Mephisto (maybe?) has an extremely moist conversation with a henchman. On top of all that, Thunderstrike becomes roommates with a Celestial murderess who has never seen the original STAR WARS!

Justice: Four Balance #1 (1994)

Something’s off because we are back in New Warriors land with this Justice/Marvel Boy/Vance Astro mini-series that reads like a formulaic episode of LAW & ORDER: SVU. Its basically “let’s cram everything about Vance’s life into four issues” as he uses his psychic Green Lantern powers to shakedown the Dickensian street urchins known as the Yancy Street Gang. Ben Grimm also shows up wearing his Persuader mask that no one remembers.

JSA #56 (2004)

Welcome to #JSApril! Worst Collection Ever is proud to participate in this celebration of JSA content by delivering our wicked takes on Geoff Johns’s “Black Reign” saga!

This issue plays out more like the first act of a promsing action flick, with Black Adam recruiting a crew of disenchanted, mayhem-seeking folks to help him liberate his home country of Kahndaq. We got the assassin Nemesis, a tatted-up Eclipso, a freshly-mutated Northwind, a conflicted Atom Smasher and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park aka Brainwave aka Robert Englund from the V mini-series. The scene gets bloody and emotional and there are cooling brains all over the place.

We also spend a bit of time parsing out Northwind’s creation so, if you new to the podcast, put a fun movie on for the kids and then hide under a blanket while you listen to this.

All this plus Jen and Shawn buy a bunch of cheap trades, new DC Absolute offerings and the Hawk Tuah Girl runs afoul of the Dark Knight!

[NOTE — we (or specifically Shawn) refers to Northwind a bunch as “Hawkwind.” Hawkwind was a band that Lemmy was in before Motörhead - we are aware of this. We will most likely screw this up again, so there you go]

Marvel Premiere #28 (1976)

In the most unexpected of occurrences, the sole survivor of a prehistoric race returns from interplanetary exile to lay claim to Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, dropping a huge mountain in the middle of the street. Ghost Rider was going to hit up a Westerns matinee at the New Beverly but now he has to deal with this. Concurrently in LA, Morbius keeps trying to snack on noted werewolf Jack Russell and happens upon this mountain business. To make it matters all sorts of difficult, Man-Thing drops in and starts burning dudes with his creepy advances. In the end, a race of humanoids is extinct, Morbius is still hungry and Ghost Rider needs to find a gas station.

Infinity Inc #22 (1986)

This week, we are in the midst of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS in this issue of INFINITY INC which sees the Infinity-eers transported to the Monitor’s ship for the most awkward company picnic ever. Silver Scarab and Fury are farting around asking everyone “are you my mother” while Skyman sarges on Wonder Girl only to go down in flames. At least Plastic Man and Elongated Man seem to have a good time.

We also got this weird time-displacement subplot where lady Doctor Midnight and Hourman XVII (in only his second lamest costume) fight off dinosaurs and Civil War re-enacters on South Carolina. This ain’t your momma’s Ken Burns documentary!!

Total Justice #2 (1996)

Sometimes you can make a comic book out of a toy line and its awesome and then sometimes you can do one and its garbage. This is the latter. TOTAL JUSTICE was a toy line that put clunky plastic armor deals on DC characters. I had the random Despero figure (STILL HAVE IT IN 2018) in case you were wondering if I hold on to things forever. Anyway, the story is confusing and kind of gross because there’s this snot armor that J’onn whips up that adapts to whatever your power is. Captain Atom is here and he’s all indignant about not being able to get inserted into the main story and mash everyone. That part is pretty great.

Kate Spencer aka Manhunter IV goes to a Los Angeles power-pop showcase with Obsidian and some friends. They are ambushed in the club by Sweeney Todd aka Handsome Solomon Grundy. A fight ensues with a psionic straight razor and some slicin’ & dicin’ just as the paparazzi show up. Also, Wonder Woman stops by looking for some legal representation.

Iron Man #64 (1973)

Iron Man participates in Detroit’s urban renewal initiative as he shoulderblocks down decrepit buildings. He is ambushed by Doctor Spectrum and defeats him handily with the entire inventory of a Spencer’s Gifts. Later, while in the middle of cuckolding Happy Hogan, Tony is surprised yet again, this time by a grey monster with telepathic powers. After destroying his new girlfriend’s health food store, Tony seemingly defeats the monster only for it to transform into a giant scimitar.

As it turns out, despite the contrary that I express in this episode, “Lemuel” is a somewhat common name, especially amongst doctors. That’s one thing this Namor villain had going for him before he died (but he got better because of starfish). But our man Lemuel here has a thing for genetic engineering and marine biology, much like an evil George Costanza.

Wonder Woman [vol 1] #201 (1972)

While on the hunt for a rage-inducing jewel hidden in Tibet, Wonder Woman runs afoul of Catwoman (in one of her lesser celebrated outfits). Eventually, both of them are captured by bloodthirsty monks who force the heroines to do battle against each other in suspended harnesses like MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME. Also, I-Ching is here, freely commenting on everything like he’s Sinbad in every movie Sinbad has ever been in. Oh, and we also go looking for Johnny Double, a private investigator who was present when Angle Man died.

Tales to Astonish #5 [Vol 2] (1980)

In this Sub-Mariner reprint, we get introduced to Todd Arliss aka Tiger Shark who was on the verge of making millions of dollars for swimming until he decided to become a jagged tooth shark man. Is that even possible? Making millions for swimming?

Anyway, pre-death, pre-starfish body Doctor Dorcas wreaks all the havoc while Sub-Mariner wears a chastity vest or something and Lady Dorma gets into a car accident in the ocean.

Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #16 (1956)

Its a trio of Jimmy Olsen stories that make no damn sense:

• Jimmy and Superman keep plutonium in the Daily Planet fridge only for the Swami (Chris Berman) to nearly swindle them out of it by making Jimmy hallucinate.

• Superman carries Jimmy into the nuclear winds, turning him invincible. Lois hits Jimmy with her shoe.

• Jimmy takes a truth serum and nearly has Clark Kent murdered in his own office.

Teen Titans #46 (1977)

Just a heads up — there are significant ETERNALS movie spoilers in the first half of the show.

The Teen Titans are tasked with figuring out the Fiddler in this issue, who may have inspired Charlie Daniels to write “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Fiddler’s here messing with a concert for the youths, unleashing bees and rats everywhere. To help with the case, the Titans bring on the Joker’s Daughter for a trial period because she has lip-shooting projectiles and knows funny bone MMA as well as Mal Duncan and his gimmicked shofar.

Batman: Hollywood Knight #1 (2001)

“Batman” makes it out to the west coast finally but its not “Batman” Robin’s here too but he’s actually this bad-ass stunt man who has hair like Lobot from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Its an Elseworlds book so there’s all sorts of nuttiness that doesn’t count.

Speaking of nuttiness, Jen and Shawn discuss the latest happenings on GOTHAM such as Bruce Wayne buying a nightclub with a handshake (just regular handshake too, not a cool secret one) and then ignoring alcohol restrictions for minors. All of a sudden, he’s that shady dude who used to sneak high schoolers into bars like “The Locker Room.” Pro tip: never go into a bar called “The Locker Room.”

The Savage Dragon [vol 1] #1 (1992)

We don’t get around to messing with too many Image Comics but Savage Dragon is a great place to start. Outlandish in story and execution, the mighty Erik Larsen gives us a lot to talk about. For example, why does Savage Dragon have so much body hair despite being a reptilian? Is he of Mediterranean descent? Will the hair removal product Nair do the trick? Regardless, this series is wild, filled with chrome skeletons, hilariously timed explosion deaths and one of the most inefficient costume designs of all time.

Captain America #325 (1987)

Cap is BACK! Not sure why he keeps showing up on the show but this issue where him and Nomad beat up on a morbidly obese drug lord was too hard to pass up. We also learn that Cap packs sandwiches before heading out on a nautical mission and that Nomad once had a raging Tom Selleck mustache. All this plus we discuss the impressive, mammoth collection that this book came from as well as independent video rental store memories from the late 80s.

Marvel Premiere #27 (1975)

Satana ends up in a California coast town, possibly the Silver Shamrock town from HALLOWEEN III. She breaks up a modern day witch burning only to have the “witch” turn heel and actually BE a witch....sort of. More of a like a Satanic personal trainer that looks like Jesus Christ but dresses like Moondragon. Anyway, there’s a kid trapped in a cape somehow and cars explode. Just like in HALLOWEEN III now that I think about it….

Robin [vol 4] #71 (1999)

An earthquake has destroyed Gotham, causing all sorts of folks to make bold fashion choices. Killer Croc is wearing paisley suspenders, Alfred’s gone plaid and Robin is walking around in his ballet shoes. Also, the GCPD and the Penguin are working together and Nightwing is in bed eating soup. Strange times, man.

Captain America #434 (1994)

Jack Flag’s parents were strong-armed out of their home by the Serpent Society who’ve decided the smart criminal money is in Arizona real estate scams. So, Jack dyes his hair like a rocket pop, rigs up a JVC boombox to shoot lasers and offers up his non-snake related persona to the Serpent Society like some completely obvious Trojan horse. Snakes are dumb though so they let him in.

Meanwhile, Cap fights a fit gal wearing a patriotic one-strapper for, no lie, SEVEN HOURS. Also, Captain America is dying. He got the results of the test back. He definitely has breast cancer.
