13 Dec 2022Scale Your Business - Hiring and Scaling Tips from Sharon Bondurant00:36:12

I'm so impressed by the business today's guest has built and how long she's sustained this entrepreneurial journey. In this episode, Sharon Bondurant shares her leadership journey, provides a wealth of knowledge on recruiting and interviewing, and gives us an inside look at the process she's used to ensuring she finds the best candidates.

Sharon Bondurant is the multi-award-winning owner of Arizona’s leading tech and HR recruiting firm. Sharon is living proof that passion, persistence, and positivity pay off. Sharon started her business in 1998 when her firstborn son inspired her to launch the company from her bedroom floor with a FAX machine, a phone book, and a stack of index cards. Over the course of 20 years, she organically grew her firm to a twice-named Inc 5000 firm that has helped over 5000 people pivot to the work they love. The company has brought in over 40 million dollars to date and continues to be a white glove source in the recruiting world.

Over the last three years, she went through her own personal pivot by restructuring her business to create more flexibility for her and her team, starting a recruiter coaching business, becoming a real estate investor, finding love, and launching a podcast appropriately called "How to Pivot." Her podcast showcases inspiring entrepreneurs, interesting career ideas that may be worth a pivot, sprinkles of Sharon’s own personal pivot, the inside scoop on growing a recruiting firm, and lessons she’s learned from being a business trailblazer.

I give examples of each category and dive into how you can use this rubric for your tracking progress and conducting performance reviews. Listen in to learn more about defining and clarifying who you need on your team.

IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:

06 Jun 20228 Common Interview Biases And How To Avoid Them00:19:40

I recently read that 52% of interviewers make their decision about a candidate within five to 15 minutes of an interview starting. If someone is coming to a conclusion that quickly, it’s clear to me there’s a lot of unconscious biases at play in their interview process. All humans experience bias, but I have a few key tips to reduce your preconceived notions and make smarter hiring decisions. I break down the eight common interview biases that creep up when we’re interviewing candidates and explain how having a hiring plan in place can help you avoid falling into those traps. I also share a preview of my new hiring course that I’m launching very soon!

IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:

  • How setting up a structured hiring plan helps you reduce biases that are specific to the interview process
  • Why we should never make assumptions about someone based on their age
  • Surprising ways that the education and experience biases might show up during an interview
  • What the ‘halo’ and ‘horns’ effects are
  • Learning how to look out for green flags instead of going into an interview with a skeptical mindset

05 Jan 2023Five Day Work Week - Is it a Fit for Your Business?00:19:16

How many days is your work week? The typical work week for most people tends to be five days, Monday through Friday, but is that the right work week for you? Up until 1926, when Henry Ford implemented the five-day, 40-hour work week, people in factories were averaging 100-hour weeks! Now of course I don't think 100-hour work weeks are right for anybody, but sticking to the typical five-day work week may also not be suited for everybody. Figuring out whether or not the five-day work week is seeing where your business's efficiency and productivity are at it's best.

17 Jan 2023Implement These 3 Rituals to Help Your Remote Team Work Better00:23:43

Many people expect HR professionals to know the perfect way to approach remote work but we're really figuring this whole thing out right alongside you. I can't say I've perfected it but I have done a lot of reading and research on the matter. So how do we do this best? I'm going to be sharing some of my favorite tools, exercises, and rituals for remote work!

First and foremost, it's okay to give yourself some grace. You don't know what you don't know, allow yourself to test and try to see what works best for your business. Then, in order to make virtual work better, you have to get intentional with it! It's not as simple as just moving your workplace norms online, because as we've all realized, this doesn't quite work.

As you consider which rituals may work best for your team, you want to make sure the goal is clear. You also want to think about time and set a clear meeting cadence so that people aren't getting distracted or bored.

12 Jan 2023Choosing a Co-Founder - Advice from Chris Harder00:35:54

Today’s episode will be a very special one, as I will be joined by a dear friend and huge inspiration for me, Chris Harder. I've known Chris for fifteen years, and during that period, he has accomplished so much. Up until the recession, Chris worked for the largest bank in the world at the time. After leaving the banking industry, Chris looked to his wife, Lori, to be his business partner. Together, they've co-founded four multimillion-dollar companies and backed 16 successful start-ups. With his co-founder Matt, Chris has recently been working on his own venture, which will be a peer-to-peer lending software that launches in August of 2023. This app will positively change the way we will lend and borrow money.

Chris and I discuss co-founders in businesses. You will learn whether your business is ready for a co-founder and more importantly, how to find the right co-founder for you. As you may guess, finding the right co-founder is incredibly important for the success and longevity of your company and Chris knows all the right ways to make sure you find the right fit.

We're tackling three common habits that might be keeping your business from reaching its full potential!

First, we dive into the habit of hiring employees with the expectation that they'll stay for at least five years. Sometimes, short-term hires can provide the relief your business needs right now, and often, they will be who you need for that position down the road.

But we're not stopping there! We explore the art of coaching versus enrolling your team. I'll guide you through when it's appropriate to coach employees, especially when developing new skills or empowering them to solve problems independently.

I'm sharing a lot of options available to you when it comes to PTO! From unlimited, accruing, or earned paid time off and how to provide ample benefits to your employees while also protecting yourself from abused time off.

02 May 2022Where To Find Quality Job Candidates00:26:24

I’m sharing my go-to tips for what I've done to fill jobs in the past, what I think we need to do going forward, and what I do whenever I have a client that has hired me to find the perfect candidate. There are two ways to fill the job: you need to go and find the talent, or they find you and they learn about your open job. Based on my 15 years of experience with recruiting, I’ve come up with three ways that you can typically find candidates without them seeing a job posting and directly applying for your job. I also touch on how to navigate and maximize your job post on job boards and share creative ways to find qualified candidates to join your team.

IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:

  • How I use Google, LinkedIn, and social media to contact people
  • My two rules about poaching people from companies
  • How to handle negative responses from potential candidates
  • When to pay for a sponsored job post on LinkedIn versus roles that aren’t worth it

29 Dec 2022Legal Implications of Becoming a Boss with Ashley Herd00:27:22

My friend and HR colleague, Ashley Herd, is back on the show! Ashley is the founder of Manager Method, which provides the tools to help managers and employees work better together. She has over a decade of experience in employment law, providing services to companies in litigation and advice to companies to help them avoid lawsuits.

Today we're diving into the legal implications that come with being a boss! If an employee is unhappy, they can actually sue you as a boss or manager. The implications can spill over into your life and become personal legal responsibilities. The ability of your employee to sue depends on federal law but also state and local laws.

The best thing you can do is think before you speak (or type!), and consider whether what you're about to share adds value or detracts. And remember: it's not just about avoiding legal issues, it's about building a relationship with your team so they feel valued and taken care of in the workplace.

03 Oct 2023111. 4 Management Mistakes You're Making and How to Overcome Them00:14:32

You have the best of intentions, but are these four management mistakes hindering your team's effectiveness? First, we're digging into the nitty gritty of finding that sweet spot between effective leadership and avoiding micromanaging. It's a delicate balance. Unfortunately, you can't assume that everything is great if you haven't heard from your team! I'm here to share my top tips to connect, share updates, and address any concerns on an ongoing basis.

Now, here's a golden nugget of wisdom: you can prescribe a decision to your team. Yep, you don't always have to lead them to the answer if you already know what it is. You can be the leader, guiding and coaching them, all without micromanaging their every move.

Another common mistake: Wanting to reach a consensus on every decision. Spoiler alert—it's not gonna happen, we can't always all see eye-to-eye. Instead, create a culture where they feel comfortable sharing their opinions, even if they differ from yours.

The fourth mistake is one that can really hinder team dynamics: not getting to know your team members personally. I know, you're the boss and you want to be professional, but that doesn't mean you can't be a compassionate leader. Learn about their interests outside of work, discover what makes them tick, and build those personal connections!

If you find that you're making one or more of these mistakes, it will be okay! Tune in to dive deeper into these topics and learn from my expert advice!

What you'll hear in this episode:

[0:00] The power of your team.

[1:55] The difference between micromanaging and not checking in.

[4:35] Don’t prescribe a decision to your team.

[9:15] Tell them why you're not on board.
