27 Nov 2020MARTYRS (2008 & 2015) Episode 2: Can I Get a Witness? (France / Canada)01:25:25

Send us a text

Hey there, WoHo's!

In our second episode, we explore the French/Canadian film, MARTYRS, a classic in body horror/pain porn (but please don't call it torture porn, as Mom originally did). We also watched the 2015 American remake so you don't have to. Wow. What happened there?

Pascal Laugier, the director of the original, according to IMDB, has stated he was "Inspired by Hostel (2005), but instead of making a movie about suffering, he wanted to make a movie about pain". How very French, non?

How do we properly classify this film? Is it actually two films in one? Is it akin to exploitation films of the 70's? Is it, in any way, a home invasion film? Some have stated it is a paradigm example of the New French Extremity movement, while others simply classify it as a body horror film. We'll get into it!

At the suggestion of friend, friend of the show, and WoHo, Quinn has suggested, Mom and Mac introduce themselves and talk about what horror does for them individually and as a family.

Thanks for listening! If you'd like to get in touch, please email us at worldofhorror96@gmail.com.

If you'd like to support the show, we'd love to accept your support! Please tell all your friends about us. Please leave a kind review or consider becoming a monthly supporter.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share about this pair of movies or what you'd like to hear in the future, we'd appreciate it if you got in touch via gmail or Instagram (we're at worldofhorrorpodcast).

Look, whatever you do, DON'T GO INTO THE BASEMENT!

--Mom and Mac

*PS The movie I could not think of was "Ils"/"Them",

**PPS Our movies for next week are: LUCIFERINA from Argentina, THE SILENT HOUSE from Uruguay and MORTO NAO FALA / NIGHTSHIFTER from Brazil.

19 Dec 2020WOLF CREEK, BLACK WATER & THE LOVED ONES Episode 5: Fair Dinkum! (Australia)01:53:05

Send us a text

WoHos!

It's Australia week on the World of Horror Podcast!! Our all-watch this week is the 2005 slasher flick, WOLF CREEK. Mac watched the 2009 splatter film THE LOVED ONES,  and Mom watched the killer crocodile film, BLACK WATER. Which role did John Jarratt (Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek) turn down? Which role in a killer crocodile film did he accept? How many humans do crocodiles kill per year? How many alligator and crocodile films has Mac seen?

Notes:
It seems Mick Taylor was referring to war crimes the Australians committed in Vietnam and that he was a member of the ANZAC.

Palindromes are words that have the same meaning backwards and forwards, such as noon and radar. "Semordinilaps" are words that have different meanings read backward and forward such as stressed/desserts, diaper/repaid or in the case of WOLF CREEK, Navithalim Mining Company (Ivan Milat), kind of.

Crocodiles are not dinosaurs nor are they descended from dinosaurs. They are cousins of dinosaurs. Badass cousins.

What did we get right? What do you want to fight us on? Aw, WoHo's, let's not fight!

Some folks I missed in the Thanks and Refs Bit: Allen Hyde, The DiMattias and Quinn McLaughlin.

Next week, our all watch is BLACK CHRISTMAS. Mac is watching ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE, Mom is watching EL DIA DE LA BESTIA, and our very special guest is watching BETTER WATCH OUT.  Join us!

14 Dec 2020UNDER THE SHADOW, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, BIG BAD WOLVES, BLUE ELEPHANT 2 Episode 4: Me & My Chador (the Middle East & Egypt)02:01:51

Send us a text

It's Middle East and Egypt week on the World of Horror! Our all-watch this week was the 2016 Persian language psychological horror film "Under the Shadow". Mac also watched "A Woman Walks Home Alone at Night" and Mom watched "Big Bad Wolves" from Israel and "Blue Elephant 2" from Egypt.

So many questions this episode! What is the difference between horror and thriller movies? What are Jinn? Why hasn't Mac seen more vampire movies? What do YOU think?

04 Dec 2020SILENT HOUSE (2010), MORTO NAO FALA / NIGHTSHIFTER, LUCIFERINA Episode 3: Livin' La Casa Muda (South America)01:09:12

Send us a text

It's the horror movies of South America this week! We watched La Casa Muda/Silent House as our all-watch, Morto Nao Fala/Nightshifter as the Mom-watch and Luciferina as the Mac-watch.

How many creepy dolls did we give La Casa Muda? How many vengeful spirits did Mom give Morto Nao Fala? How many ovaries did Mac give Luciferina?

Mom forgets the title of the movie SUCKER PUNCH and to explain what "Squad" is, but there is a little addendum at the end of the podcast along with the Mom and Mac Chat to fill in the blanks in a section I like to call "Fill in the Blanks". One blank that was left open was that it was THE HAUNTING (1963) which is based on the Shirley Jackson novel. I couldn't tell you what the 1959 movie is!

We had some technical difficulties so the Mom-watch was a solo endeavor. Just roll with it. It is still fun as hell.

What did you think about the different format for the pod? What do you think about the movies? Can you recommend any other great South American flicks?

Please leave us a message at the anchor site or get in touch with us via Instagram. We'd really love to hear from you!

Next week we are exploring the movies of the Middle East and North Africa: Blue Elephant 2 from Egypt, Big Bad Wolves from Israel and Under the Shadow from Iran. Join us! But...

31 Dec 2020THE RING (1998 & 2002) Episode 8: All's Well That Ends's Well01:58:49

Send us a text

WoHo's This week we watched "Ringu" from Japan and "The Ring" from the US.

We had a little technical difficulty just at the end of the discussion between Mom and Mac. For the record, Mom is permanently scarred by the horse scene in "The Ring" and we both gave the remake 3 video tapes and the orig 4 video tapes although we thought there were definite problems with both movies (and that both were pretty great, too).

We hope you enjoyed our special guests Aaron and Andy. Thanks, guys!

Look for your favorite International Horror Podcast in the new year and stay tuned for a big announcment regarding Season 2 coming up next week!

If you want to watch along with us for next week, we are watching "The Last Ones Out", "The House on Willow Street" and "The Soul Collector" from South Africa.

Look for us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tweet at Mac (TheGayJimmyBuffett) to get our YouTube channel going!!

This week our all-watch was the disappointing "28 Days Later" ripoff, "The Last Ones Out". Mom watched "The Soul Collector" and Mac watched "The House on Willow Street". 03 Feb 2022SLASHER S4: FLESH AND BLOOD Episodes 5 - 8 Episode 56: Slasher? I Hardly Knew Her! (Slashers!)00:48:56

Send us a text

WoHos! This is the culmination of our Slasher shows. Our discussion of DREAMHOME is in part 4A. Our discussion of the first four episodes of SLASHER S4 is on episode 3!

We discusss all the insanity and revelations in the back half of season 4 of the Canadian Anthology show SLASHER.  We got incest, we got a be-beheading, nods to Game of Thrones, FATAL ATTRACTION and THE ORPHAN and a magic mushroom trip, to boot!

Thanks to Anthony Longo of Horror Bull for the Vannicola connection and congrats to Alex Ozerov (Theo) and Sydney Ozerov-Meyer (Liv) who were married in 2021.

Stay tuned for some minis coming up on classic International Horror. I've been dipping my toes into these waters and it's been an education. If you have any classics (pre 2000) that you love, let me know over social media!

Next time we look at Zombies with ONE CUT OF THE DEAD and SHAUN OF THE DEAD.

14 Feb 2022SHAUN OF THE DEAD & ONE CUT OF THE DEAD Episode 57: Zed's Dead, Baby! (Zombies!)01:03:38

Send us a text

WoHo's!

Mac's genre pick this week was zombies and we watched two zombie comedies: ONE CUT OF THE DEAD from Japan & SHAUN OF THE DEAD from the UK.

Zombies in both films function as a wake up call to our main characters and both films are examples of labors of love. Check them out or check them out again!

We were having so much fun discussing SHAUN OF THE DEAD that we forgot to rate it, but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that Mac would give it 5/5 cricket bats. That makes two 5/5ers this show. You're welcome!

A very happy 52nd birthday to "friend of the show" Simon Pegg.

We have two minis coming up which will serve as the meat in the podcast mains sandwich. That metaphor needs work. What I mean is,  before the next main, which will be out in two weeks, Mom and Mac will review David Cronenberg's sophomore effort, RABID and Mom is going solo to cover Mario Bava's SHOCK. This is Mom's pet project to fill in her own gaps in horror knowledge and to, with hope, connect to some academic types to discuss foundational horror. If you are one such type, or you would like to recommend someone, please get in touch!

On the next main, Mom is highlighting Haunted Houses and we will review BEETLEJUICE from the US and THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME (2013) from Venezuela.

Thanks so much for all your support, WoHos!
We love you.

DON'T go into the basement.

18 Feb 2022RABID Episode 58: World of Foundational Horror™ Bonus00:29:18

Send us a text

WoHos!!

Mac helped me kick off this mini project where I'm dipping my toes into the frigid and weird waters of classic international horror.

This time it's David Cronenberg's RABID from 1977.

I celebrate the guy's entire catalogue, but Mac wasn't super keen on this one. We both conclude, though, that this is "a mess" [TM].

Next up, I am looking at SHOCK by Mario Bava and Mac will return on the main as we look at the haunted house classics: THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME / LA CASA DEL FIN DE LOS TIEMPOS & BEETLEJUICE.  (I may have gotten a little hooked on the soundtrack, as well).

If you have recommendations for other foundational films we should review, please get in touch. I'm reachable at our email and on Instagram. Check out Mac's twitch stream and follow him on twitter. Oh! And I am finally starting to review WoH films on Letterboxd!

Thank you for listening.

28 Feb 2022BEETLEJUICE & THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME Episode 60: If I Knew Then What I Know Now (Haunted Houses!)01:10:51

Send us a text

WoHos! Mom's  genre pick this week is Haunted Houses and we looked at THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME (2013) from Venezuela 🇻🇪 and BEETLEJUICE (1988) from US.

The portrayal of the husbands in both movies was not great, but we enjoyed them both, anyway.

Biggest takeaway: Catherine O' Hara is our once and future queen!

Next week look for another foundational mini and one our next main episode is Mac's picks of Battle Royale-style splatter films: BATTLE ROYALE & THE BELKO EXPERIMENT.

Please get in touch. We love you! DON'T go into the basement!

14 Mar 2022BATTLE ROYALE & THE BELKO EXPERIMENT Episode 62: To the Death01:37:31

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week we got real killy with it as we looked at Battle Royale-type films with BATTLE ROYALE (2000) from Japan & THE BELKO EXPERIMENT (2017) from the USA.

Mac did his best to explain BATTLE ROYALE to me and we have feelings about THE BELKO EXPERIEMENT.

Questions abound: Why does the lead have such robust plot armor? (TM--Mac) Why wasn't the cleaning crew local?? Why is there an armory in the building, anyway?

Next time on the main episode we will look at psychological horror with THELMA from Norway and CARRIE (1976) from the US.

In the meantime, I'll be dropping some  World of FOUNDATIONAL Horror bonus minis into the feed.

Thank you for all your support and listenage. Yep, that's a word now.

25 Mar 2022FRESH (2022) Episode 63: Meat Cute00:38:06

Send us a text

WoHos!

Mac came to town to have lunch and so we had to record a bonus mini on FRESH, the best advertisement for veganism I have seen lately!

Spoilers abound, so if you haven't seen FRESH yet, I'd encourage you to do so. We'll be here when you get back.

We explore the pretty much successful feminist themes and bemoan some of the less successful intersectional feminist themes in the film.

There's a lot to celebrate here, and we are not just talking about Sebastian Stan's dance break! While it is not a perfect film, it got under our skin and it was lovely to discuss. We hope you will listen and enjoy.

Is Mom's theory about Ann's backstory completely wackadoo? Was Mollie drawn clearly enough for ya? How about that Alex Garland Choreo?

Coming up soon:
Mom's picks on Psychological Horror: THELMA from Norway and CARRIE from the US.
Mac's picks's on Beast/Animals Attack: BOAR from Australia and TREMORS from the US.

We are really digging this format. Mom also promises some minis later this spring.

We're also looking to pair THE ORPHAN, THE ORPHANAGE and THE BABADOOK. Suggestions welcome!

Listen. We love you. And DON'T go into the basement!

17 Apr 2022THE THING (1982) Episode 65: Film vs. Film Podcast Special Guests It Means the World of Horror to Me™ Bonus Peak Russell01:17:34

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week we talked practical effects, sausage parties, paranoia, isolation, childhood sleepovers, bro-ing out and how damn good looking Kurt Russell is in this movie.

We had Martin and Boaz on from the wonderful Film vs. Film podcast in the second part of our Crossover Extravaganza 2022. For the first part, go check out their episode on Vampire Films from April 8, 2022. It was a blast!

Martin's invitation inspired us to create this spinoff bonus series with other podcast people and friends to discuss their favorite horror films. Coming up we have discussions on the David Lynch films, FIRE  WALK WITH ME,  MULHOLLAND DRIVE and the Tim Burton animated classic, CORALINE.

We had a little audio bleed on this one,  but on the upside, I found a nice little app called Type Studio, which looks like it will make editing faster and will provide a fairly serviceable transcript, to boot. Here that is:
https://app.typestudio.co/share/Oizc8PDleGPbz5F2FIFt

Please get in touch with your thoughts on THE THING and on your  favorite horror flicks.  Also please stay tuned for our main episodes on Animal Attack horror films, BOAR & TREMORS and Creepy Kids movies, THE ORPHAN & GOODNIGHT, MOMMY coming up in the next few weeks.

WoHos! Your support means the World of Horror to us, truly. If you like what we are doing, please spread the word about the pod.

A warm welcome to our new listeners in Sweden and Guatemala.   Vi alskar er alla, Ga inte alla in i kallaren/ Nosotros te amamos No vayan todos al sotano!!

27 Apr 2022TREMORS & BOAR Episode 66: Fella in a Friendly Way (Animal Attack!)01:36:37

Send us a text

WoHos!!

This week we are covering Mac's picks for Animal Attack movies: TREMORS from the US  & BOAR from Australia. They couldn't have been paired better as they both deal with small communities out in the sticks coming together to fight nasty beasties.

In Mom & Mac chat, we recount a funny story when Mac asked me if he could use the "C" word. When he was eight!

We uncover some big truths about the nature of words and gender.

We also get a little spiritual about it when it looked like we had a third person (?)  in on our call.

Mom is super giggly on this one for some reason. She also tries to make a heartfelt address to Mr. Kevin Bacon (Friend of the ShowTM).

Mac's shout out: Twitch.tv/witchboykit

In May we have some guests lined up to talk their favorite/fond of horror movies ROSEMARY'S BABY, CORALINE, MULHOLLAND DRIVE & FIRE WALK WITH ME.

...And Mom really will get to the Foundational shows! I'm watching a lot. I just have to put them together. Swear.

On the next main, it's Mom's picks of Creepy Kid movies: GOODNIGHT, MOMMY from Germany and THE ORPHAN from the US.

Thanks for all your support, WoHOs! We love you! DON'T go into the basement!

02 May 2022ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) Episode 67: It Means the World of Horror to Me™ Bonus01:03:20

Send us a text

WoHo's!

It's a special It Means the World of Horror to Me episode!

Original Friend of the ShowTM, Quinn was nice enough to come by with one of her favorite horror films: ROSEMARY'S BABY from 1968. We spoil the hell out of it, as per, so if you don't want it spoiled, have a watch or rewatch before you listen.

We are both such fans of the cinematography, the performances, the suspense and creep factors built on a toxic marriage, and the already tenuous proposition of pregnancy! What say you, is pregnancy magical or is it horrifying?

Some other topics covered: The Pollening that occurs this time of year in NC, Sidney Blackmer's connection to our home state, smoking on the Dick Cavett show, dream sequences, ovulation cycles, the abandonment of the Hays Code, and who is the obvious winner of the YOU FOOL award for ROSEMARY's BABY.

Coming up next on the main is Creepy Kid films. We will cover THE ORPHAN from the US and GOODNIGHT, MOMMY, which I almost could not finish the first time I watched it!

WoHos, please get in touch and remember:
We love you and

10 May 2022GOODNIGHT, MOMMY & ORPHAN Episode 69: Don't Worry, You're Going to Heaven (Creepy Kids!)02:03:46

Send us a text

WoHos!

Mom's pick was Creepy Kids. We looked at ORPHAN from the US and GOODNIGHT MOMMY / ICH SEH, ICH SEH from Austria. As per, spoilers abound including the two big "twists" in these two flicks.

We enjoyed (some of) the performances in ORPHAN, but really hated the way the husband was drawn.

We enjoyed GOODNIGHT, MOMMY so much more!

Give both a (re) view and have a listen!

Mom & Mac Chat Content/Preview: Mac's water is turned off today (on recording day), talking to those you disagree with, orthodox religious types, Mac's beef with cis men who complain about wearing masks, religious hypocrites. Spoiler: we solve it in this segment.

ORPHAN Content Preview: Stillbirth, nightmare scenes with hospital imagery, gaslighting, Peter Sarsgarding-it-up, children in jeopardy, friendless adult women, Margo Martindale's talent being wasted, sexualization of children.

GOODNIGHT MOMMY Content Preview: Torture of a mom at the hands of her kid (s).
We look at various interpretations of the story and images. What do you think? Get in touch, WoHos!

07 Jun 2022DEAD RINGERS & DR. JEKYLL AND SISTER HYDE Episode 72: World of Foundational Horror™ Bonus00:49:59

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week I looked at two Foundational films about identity.

DR. JECKYLL AND SISTER HYDE is a 1971 British horror film directed by Roy Ward Baker based on the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The film was made by British studio Hammer Film Productions and was their third adaptation of the story after The Ugly Duckling and The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll. The film is notable for showing Jekyll transform into a female Hyde; it also incorporates into the plot aspects of the historical Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare cases.

DEAD RINGERS is a 1988 psychological thriller film starring Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists. David Cronenberg directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Norman Snider. Their script was based on the lives of Stewart and Cyril Marcus and on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, a "highly fictionalized" version of the Marcuses' story.

The film won numerous honors, including for Irons' performance, and 10 Genie Awards, notably Best Motion Picture. Toronto International Film Festival critics have ranked it among the Top 10 Canadian Films of All Time.

Some questions remain:
How central to your identity is your gender?
Which is the worse decision: taking female hormones to extend one's life or becoming addicted to pills in order to save your brother
Who's right about Mr. Cronenberg's film: Your humble host or David Cronenberg, himself?

Philosophy Corner™ makes its first appearance on the podcast. I just couldn't stop thinking about identity.

Coming up:
Whole Squad Pod™ (Mac, Quinn and me on three kickass films from 1960: LES YEUX SAN VISAGE / EYES WITHOUT A FACE, PEEPING TOM & PSYCHO.

Mac's Picks: Killers genre with ICHI THE KILLER & HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER

It Means the World of Horror to Me™ the (rescheduled) Lynchisode with FIRE, WALK WITH ME & MULHOLLAND DR.

13 Jun 2022PSYCHO (1960) Episode 73: Whole Squad Pod Bonus Pt. 1 of our 1960-isode: Hot Creeper!00:56:06

Send us a text

WoHos!

We got the whole squad together to talk about three heavy hitters from 1960: PSYCHO, LES YEUX SAN VISAGE / EYES WITHOUT A FACE, and PEEPING TOM. We talked A LOT, so this Bonus will be in two pieces.

This is Part One of two, wherein Quinn breaks down Hitchcock's classic proto-slasher, PSYCHO. Stay tuned for Part Two coming out real soon.

This movie has everything: Mommy issues, primitive psychoanalysis, paternalism, transphobia, and ableism at their best, but they tried (?)

We also have Letterboxd reviews and trivia!

We're all super thirsty for Anthony Perkins and grossed out by Hitchcock's coprophilia, but we are here for the glory that is Patricia Hitchcock!!

WoHos!

This is part two of our Whole Squad Pod 1960-isode edition of the show. In part one, we looked at Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. In this episode, we look at LES YEUX SAN VISAGE / EYES WITHOUT A FACE and PEEPING TOM.

These films have everything: Daddy issues, childhood trauma, death by German Shepherd, death by tripod, random dance breaks, nosy neighbors and masks.

Coming up in our It Means the World of Horror to Me™ series, The Lynchisode with our friends and super WoHos, Lindley and River. We will be looking at FIRE: WALK WITH ME & MULHOLLAND DR.

15 Jun 2022ICHI THE KILLER & HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER Episode 74: No Love in Your Violence (Killers!)01:29:52

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week it is Mac's Picks of Killer movies with ICHI THE KILLER (2001) from Japan and HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986) from the US.

ICHI THE KILLER (2001):
A sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer comes across a repressed and psychotic killer who may be able to inflict levels of pain the enforcer can only dream about.

HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986):
Henry (Michael Rooker) is released from prison following his mother's murder. He supplements his job as an exterminator with a series of indiscriminate and violent murders. Fellow jailbird and drug dealer Otis (Tom Towles) becomes a willing accomplice in Henry's bloody killings. But as the depravity escalates and Henry forms a bond with Otis' sister, Becky (Tracy Arnold), things start to get out of hand. The film is based on the true-life story of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas.

WoHos, we pose it to you: Is it a good movie if you have to read the book / manga before you watch the movie? Weigh in!

Mac's favorite watches from May: EMMA (2020) & AS THE GODS WILL ( 2014)

29 Jun 2022POSSESSOR & METAMORPHOSIS / BYEONSHIN (2019) Episode 76: I Don't Know Her (Possession!)02:04:41

Send us a text

WoHos!

It was Mom's pick of Possession this week and we looked at METAMORPHOSIS from Korea & POSSESSOR from Canada!

METAMORPHOSIS metamorphosizes into a bit of a mess after a certain very handsome Uncle Priest (Sung Woo-bae) shows up, but before that, there is some beautiful imagery and disturbing emotional family drama. Magnificent performances, kickass set design, and some haunting moments are featured here. Notice I didn't mention writing.

POSSESSOR is a science fiction horror film whose story involves an assassin who takes over select unfortunates so she can carry out her missions. Excellent acting, terrific practical effects, and some wackadoo one-liners from Eddie (Raoul Bhaneja) make this movie custom-made for Mom, but how does Mac feel about it?

Content preview: In Mom and Mac Chat we discuss living how to deal with the stress of living in late-stage capitalism as our republic slouches toward fascism, how long is too long for a social visit when you have social anxiety disorder and what is the perfect speed to select for audio books and podcasts.

12 Jul 2022BLACK SUNDAY (1960) & THE WITCH (2015) Episode 77: Witches Be Witches (Witches!)01:40:04

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week Mac's genre pick is Witches! We looked at the directorial debuts of two masters and their masterpieces: Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY and Robert Eggers' THE WITCH.

Content preview: Mac is househunting, and Mom is trying to squeeze the most enjoyment out of her summer unstructured time before she goes back into the classroom in a few weeks. We both cater A LOT to our cats, Branwen and Rosey.

Mac's Picks for June: Reanimator, The Hollowman
Mom's picks for June: Night of the Hunter, The Midnight Meat Train, Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Mom's Shout Outs: Drag Mitch to Hell (Mom was on the Season 3 opener) & Cronenberg Or Cats (Mac will appear on 7/23 to discuss A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE at NIGHT  & Mom will appear on 9/10 to discuss CAT PEOPLE 1942)!

Mom enjoyed BLACK SUNDAY more than Mac, but that might be because she did more research to fill in the blanks of the script. Mac likes THE WITCH more than he did on previous watches, but Mom's opinion remains the same.

Some questions remain: Do either of these films have a happy ending? Who's worse: Dr. Kruvajan or William? How serious are Mac's viewers on that whole green card marriage thing?

Next time it's Mom's pick and I have chosen Nature Horror. We will look at BACKCOUNTRY from Canada & LAKE PLACID from the US.

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week we got real lupine with it and looked at AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON & DOG SOLDIERS.

We also talk about: job hunting, exercising, blonde labs taking a break in the middle of the road, summer break being over, social anxiety disorder, stress, drawing, and appearing on a friend's twitch stream (twitch.tv/ohheyitsdevin).

Some questions remain: How many times in one episode can we use the word "viscera"?
Does AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON hold up?
Just how bad is toxic masculinity?

Our favorite watches for July are:
Mac: NOPE & RRR
Mom: RRR, THE NORTHMAN, MAD GOD and PYEWACKET (honorable mention)

Tangents include talk about NOPE (spoiler free) and how we wish Nicole Kidman would cease and desist.

21 Aug 2022THE COLLECTOR (1965) / A HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON / IL SEGNO ROSSO DELLA FOLLIO Episode 80: The World of Foundational Horror™ Bonus00:49:44

Send us a text

WoHos!

Mac is moving this weekend, so we are pushing our Alien Invasion movies to next week.

This time in the WORLD OF FOUNDATIONAL HORROR™ series, I am looking at two insane killers--John from HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON and Freddie from THE COLLECTOR.

HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON was a Spanish/Italian collabo that is short on plot and character but long on style and I think is a whole lot of fun.

THE COLLECTOR is an adaptation of John Fowles's novel and features two really strong performances in Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggars.

I'm back in school and would like to do at least one of these episodes a month. If you have any suggestions, as ever, please get in touch! I am also working to line up guests for our It Means the World of Horror to Me™ series. If you would like to have a conversation about your favorite or fond of horror film, please drop us a line.

31 Aug 2022INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956 & 1978): Episode 81: Reborn Into An Untroubled World (Alien Invasion!)01:33:58

Send us a text

WoHos! This is part I of our Alien Invasion show. This week we examine the 1956 & 1978 versions of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS.

As I state in the intro, this one is real swear-y for some reason. If that bothers you, I apologize and won't feel sad if you have to skip this one.

Apologies to Veronica Cartwright, whom I call Nancy at least once.

Next week we hope you'll tune back in for our part II where we discuss Kiyoshi Kurosawa's BEFORE WE VANISH.

05 Sep 2022BEFORE WE VANISH: Episode 82 Alien Invasion! Part 201:19:27

Send us a text

This is part two of our Alien Invasion! Episodes. Part One (Episode 81) covered INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, from 1956 & 1978.

BEFORE WE VANISH is a 2017 Science Fiction/Horror film from Kiyoshi Kurosawa. It involves three aliens who are on a reconnaissance mission to steal "conceptions" from humans ahead of a planned invasion and annhiliation mission.

No Mom & Mac chat for this one, but we do get into a discussion of love and TikTok.

Please tell a friend or two about us and come back for Episode 83, when we cover Coming of Age Horror films with RAW from France and HELLBENDER from the US. Later this month, we will also cover A WOMAN OBSESSED movies with Misery from the US and SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE from South Korea.

We love you, WoHos!

16 Sep 2022HELLBENDER & RAW: Episode 83 Bitter Sixteen (Coming of Age Movies!)02:18:01

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week, Mac chose two movies that really demonstrate the idea that adolescence is hell: HELLBENDER from the US & RAW / GRAVE from France.

Both involve 16-year-old women who learn truths about their true nature. Good people get hurt. It's a whole thing.

Contents of the content
Mom & Mac Chat: Mac has job interviews, Mom gets REAL vaccinated, and Five Guys doesn't care about your nut allergy.

Mac's Watches from August: One-Piece / dishonorable mention: ALLEGORIA
Mom's Watches from August: CARNIVAL OF SOULS, PREY, THE INNOCENTS / Dishonorable Mention: THEY / THEM
Mom's Shoutouts: Film vs. Film podcast with Comfort Films Podcast (Stephen King adaptations), Your Mother Ate My Dog podcast, singer Madds Buckley

Mom talks RAW

Mac talks HELLBENDER

Some questions remain, of course. How do you think lying to your kid is a good thing? If all your friends ate a rabbit kidney, would you eat one, too? How problematic is the portrayal of Justine's gay roommate? Out of Mom & Mac, which host shares a birthday month and year with Toby Poser?

Coming up:
Mom's Picks--A Woman Obsessed movies: MISERY from the US and SYMPATHY for LADY VENGEANCE from South Korea
Mac's Picks--60's / 70's Creature Features--THE CREEPING FLESH from the UK & 100 MONSTERS from Japan

Apologies to Theo Germaine, who uses they / them pronouns. I kept calling them him.

28 Sep 2022MISERY & LADY VENGEANCE: Episode 84: A Woman Obsessed!01:59:56

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week we looked at two portraits of obsession: Annie Wilkes from MISERY and I Geum-ja from Lady Vengeance.

There are a couple of similarities between these two films I never noticed until now. The celebrity that springs up around each woman is one and the other one...has to do with feet.

Contents of the Content:
Mom & Mac Chat: Mac's playing Slime Rancher to mitigate late summer slog, Entry-level cats vs.  Mac's cat, Mom's walking with Dennis Lehane, we wonder who will stop Ryan Murphy? Watching BARBARIAN (I don't spoil it) with a non-horror fan was not the best call on my part.

Mac talks MISERY

Mom talks LADY VENGEANCE

We got Letterboxd reviews, we got trivia, we got "What phobia is THAT"? and of course our patented The Questions™ feature. You're welcome!

Coming up:
Mac's pick of "Early creature features that have interesting applications"? I am not sure I got that right, but he has chosen CREEPING FLESH from the US and 100 MONSTERS from Japan.

My genre pick is "Based on a true story" horror films and I have chosen  SNOWTOWN (which I swore I would never watch again, but here we are) and SACRAMENT from the US.

We have a couple of upcoming guests we are very excited about: Filmmakers and darned nice people, Tim Aslin and Ryan McDuffie from "Dismembering Horror" will join us in October  & some returning friends, Martin and Boaz from "Film vs. Film" will join us in November for It Means the World of Horror to Me™ picks!

Quinn has also agreed to help me out with a Foundational World of Horror™ pick: REBECCA from 1940. I have to work on my George Sanders impression!

One note: We switched platforms and some of our more raucous laughter is muted. Not sure why. Techie WoHos, Get in touch!

This week we were thrilled to welcome Ryan McDuffie & Tim Aslin from Dismembering Horror to the show to talk about two movies that Mean the World of Horror™ to them: ALIEN & CARNIVAL OF SOULS.

We had a very nice chat and we hope you enjoy it and then immediately go subscribe to their podcast and download and consume their entire catalogue.

13 Nov 2022SNOWTOWN & THE SACRAMENT: Episode 88: Bless Your Heart! Horror Movies Based on a True Story01:59:03

Send us a text

WoHos!

Numerous forces conspired against this show, but I am glad to finally bring it to your ears and hearts. This week's episode was delayed due to Mom's head cold. (I apologize for my nasal voice in this one!) After we were able to record, I had to re-edit the second half and as I correcting the distortion, we ended up sounding like we were communicating through tin cans, so I had to fix that and that delayed us further. Sorry, WoHos!!

We looked at movies Based on a True Story films. We viewed SNOWTOWN / THE SNOWTOWN MURDERS from Australia and Ti West's THE SACRAMENT from the US.

TW/CW for SNOWTOWN: Child molestation, rape, dog death, homophobia, transphobia and torture. For THE SACRAMENT: Mass suicide, child murder, abandonment of the found footage conceit, and an AK/Deus ex machina.

We also discuss our fave watches from October, being beautiful/ugly, working from home, buying a home and the blessed end of this semester on the horizon.

Coming up in our The World of Foundational Horror™ Series: HAXAN, THE HAUNTING (1963), DON'T LOOK NOW & THESIS / TESIS. If I can get it together, I will also put together a show on ROADGAMES & NEXT OF KIN.

In our It Means the World of Horror to Me™ series, we have great shows coming up on LAST NIGHT IN SOHO & THE BRIDE OF CHUCKY.

On the next main shows, Mac's picks will be zombie films with TRAIN TO BUSAN from South Korea (it was only a matter of time!) & NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD from the US. My picks will be films on cults with THE STEPFORD WIVES from the US & THE KILL LIST from the UK.

I want to extend a warm welcome to our new WoHos. We see you, Spain, India, Portugal, Australia, Argentina, Thailand, Bahrain and Denmark!
We would be pleased to make your acquaintance over email at worldofhorror96@gmail.com or on Instagram at worldofhorrorpodcast!

Thanks for all your support, WoHos! Please tell all your friends all about us!

This week Devin from Pineapple Shaped Lamps an Sully from Third Impact Anime joined me to discuss the 1922 silent classic HAXAN from Sweden.

Have you seen this film? Which version is your favorite?

Questions remain:
1920's cinema, what is so offensive about a closeup?
Why do I suddenly have an intense craving for butter?

Coming up: Martin and Boaz from Film vs Film will join the while squad to discuss LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, Quinn will help me dissect DONT LOOK NOW, and we will be back to discuss our end of the year fave watches at the end of this month!

17 Feb 2023THE HOST (2006) & PARASITE (2019): Episode 97: Mom's Picks: Song Kang-ho movies02:40:19

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week, it was Mom's picks and Mom chose movies featuring acting legend, Song Kang-ho. We talked a whole lot about THE HOST (2006) & PARASITE, from Director Bong Joon-ho.

Mom & Mac Talk: Lawn Talk, Hair talk with the Hares, Mom and Tina Turner, Mac's toxic friend group in college, why we are not friends with people we were friends with in college, CDs vs. Spotify

Mac Talks The Host (2006)
Tangents include: The new problematic Harry Potter game and J.K. Rowling's transphobia, Anti-LGBTQ Bills, Obsession for living in a Post-Apocalyptic world,

Mom Talks Parasite
Tangents include: Dealing with telemarketers, Mom's rewatch of "Lodge 49"

Notes: Apologies to Hangulphones. I know I mangled the names mercilessly. Also, I mispronounced the bottom-dwelling husband's name, Geun-sae as Ge-un a few times. I also realize that wives do not take husbands' names in South Korea so "Mrs. Kim" & "Mrs. Park" are just used as short-hand.

Coming up on the main show, we will be looking at films involving dementia: THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN & RELIC. And Q-balls, it is time to celebrate because Quinn McLaughlin will be joining me on the next Quinnisode™ to discuss THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962).

Check out Episode 1 on REC and QUARANTINE and Ep. 48 on GRAVE ENCOUNTERS & GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM.

Stuff we talked about:

The Grizzly Bear is Ursus arctos horribilis, which means horrible bear bear as "ursus" is bear in Latin and "arctos" is bear in Greek.

Cat torture on social media, laughing off being locked in the closet, how does a Millenial feel about paper photos? Age-inappropriate casting,

Coming up: A Quinnisode on THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962), Mom's picks of animated films: MAD GOD & THE GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, and Mac's picks of "Animals Run Amok" films: Hitchcock's THE BIRDS & BLACK SHEEP (1963) from New Zealand.

Send us a text

Quinn was kind enough this week to join me for a ramble on one of my favorite films, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962).

From IMDb: An American POW in the Korean War is brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy.

Does it all fit together? Not at all, but I do so love it so! Between the insane fight scene and the insane train scene, we are flummoxed, bewildered, enchanted, and sold on this Cold War thriller.

Thanks a lot to filmsite.org for the plot synopsis.

Coming up on the regular show, Mac & I will be discussing animated horror films, We will be looking at MAD GOD from the US and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES from Japan.

18 Mar 2023MAD GOD & GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES: Episode 100: Mom's Picks: Animated Horror02:02:38

Send us a text

Well, WoHos!

When we originally chose the animated films for this show, I had remembered GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES as much more horrific and MAD GOD as much more...something?
That didn't stop us from talking about each film a lot, though!!

We also talk Letterboxd reviews, an Eric Winick review, what our personal ratings mean as well as the dismaying state of affairs in this country for trans people, disappointing home improvement projects, why Mac isn't doing commissions right now, and how much Mom truly loves Rian Johnson.

I also included an extra bit of Mom & Mac chat at the end of the show for those listeners-til-the-end WoHos wherein I tell the tale of trying to see the original SCREAM in the theater with...baby Mac! How did that go? You'll have to listen until the end to find out!

Next time we will be looking at "Animals Run Amok" when we look at THE BIRDS from the US and BLACK SHEEP from New Zealand.

On the next Quinnisode, Quinn and I will be discussing Hitchcock's ROPE, which I have never seen.

Thanks for all your support. Please tell all your friends about us.

Send us a text

Q-Balls!

Quinn and I looked at Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 experimental film, ROPE, which was intended to seem like one unbroken take. It was, in fact, composed of 10 shots because...1948. Jimmy Stewart, John Dall, and Farley Granger star in this film that is loosely based on the murder committed by Leopold and Loeb. It is filled with a lovely supporting cast and some top-notch mid-Atlantic accents.

Quinn and I talk teaching, looking forward to summer break, our relationship to dead bodies, funerals, and memorial services, and our two very different responses to this film.

Thanks for tuning in. We appreciate it so very much!

On the main show, Mac and I will be discussing "Animals Run Amok" films when we look at Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS from the US and BLACK SHEEP from New Zealand.

WoHos!

This week we looked at Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS and Jonathan King's BLACK SHEEP.

We were really taken with what a freaking weirdo Tippi Hedren's character Melanie was and the tragedy that befell Suzanne Pleshette's character even before she was felled by THE BIRDS. Also, Alfred Hitchcock: what a monster.

We both really enjoyed BLACK SHEEP--it was just a lot of gross, silly fun.

Send us a text

Hey, Q-Balls!

We're back this week with a movie I swore I'd never watch again and a movie I have watched more times than I can count: A CLOCKWORK ORANGE & THE PARALLAX VIEW. We talk a whole lot about A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and I talk a little bit about THE PARALLAX VIEW.

After a long Christina & Quinn Chat wherein we discuss Quinn's birthday, favorite childhood authors, ouija boards, meditation, progress vs. perfection, midlife and quarter-life crises, feeling jealous of young, talented people, and the differences in our personalities, we do get into it (Skip to minute 23:53 if you want to get right to the movies).

Content Warning for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Violence including sexual violence.

There are two sexual assaults depicted in the movie and we talk about knowing your limits when it comes to content vs. condemning art if you bail on it.

We had a nice ramble about the plot, Malcolm MacDowell's face, Kubrick's calling cards and techniques, low-budget techniques used in the film, the design and costuming, and the many misuses of power demonstrated in the film.

Of course, we have lots of Trivia and Letterboxd goodness! Thanks, for listening, WoHos & Q-Balls!

Stuff we spoke about on the podcast:
Anne of Green Gables IS on Scribd.com. I'm downloading it now!
Paul Zindel's book WAS called The Undertaker's Gone Bananas (but is NOT on Scribd.com).

A Clockwork Orange Glossary

Of course, I meant that obscure indie film by a guy named Quentin Tarantino? RESERVOIR DOGS. (Cue rolling eyeball emoji).

At time marker 1:50:13 (I KNOW!), I talk about THE PARALLAX VIEW, a film that, for me, has everything: Fantastic cinematography, political intrigue, a paranoid rage-filled, and down-on-his-luck investigative reporter with luxurious '70's hair, an assassination plot, an amazing cast including a glorified cameo by Paula Prentiss, shadows, surveillance/voyeurism, a homophobic small town sheriff, an awkward joke from a pretty woman, and connections (Get in touch and tell me how solid you think they are) to KILL LIST and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. I hope you will give this film your time. It

Send us a text

WoHos!

Well, as Quinn journeys back to her homeland for a few weeks, we thought it might be fun to talk about another Hitchcock film. This one just happens to be my fave. I wanted to save this one until June 30, which is the 72nd anno of this classic flick, but as Quinn has, (and maybe some of you WoHos have) some driving ahead of you this week and weekend, I thought I would release it a little earlier. Look. You're Welcome.

The Christina & Quinn chat is long again. Jump to minute 11:55 if you want to get right into the film.
The weather, freaky deaths/accidents, Quinn's dad's brain tumor (that he had when she was young), Quinn's childhood pet dog, Jake, how dogs see us, how Christina has the best cat (sorry Y'all cat owners that I got the best one). But also, not sorry. You get it.

We discuss Robert Walker's performance and life cut short by alcoholism, what big fans we both are of Patricia Hitchcock, the humor in the film, how much Bruno is not okay, whether or not Bruno set the whole thing up, homoerotic subtext, shadows, and popping some kid's balloon with a cigarette. Seriously, how great would that be?

Next up on the Quinnisode: GASLIGHT from 1944.
Next up on the main show: Slashers with YOU'RE NEXT & TENEBRAE.
Next up on the World of Foundational Horror™: EVIL DEAD TRAP

We also have some special shows coming up on David Cronenberg's VIDEODROME, shows on possession with THE EXORCIST & THE WAILING, a Ti West Special with THE INNKEEPERS & HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, Tech horror with TETSUO & eXistenZ and horror about writers with BURNING & IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS.

We're so excited to bring these shows to you. Thanks so much for your continued support! It really means the World of Horror™ to us, truly. Please join our Facebook and YouTube pages and tell all your friends all about us. Seriously, though, please join and subscribe because we need more of you on those pages.

Sorry! We had some audio issues, but I think I got them worked out!

You'll forgive the later-than-usual release of this episode. I got sidelined by a little of the mid-summer doldrums.

This week Mac and I looked at TENEBRAE from Italy and YOU'RE NEXT in our detour into slashers.

Next time we will be back on track discussing movies about possession with THE EXORCIST from the US (Which I think will be a first-time watch for Mac)  & THE WAILING from South Korea (Which is a " I lost the number of times I have watched" movie for us).

Stuff we talked about
I overstated the stats (Maybe? They are hard to track) or child molestation.  According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse.

Q-Balls!

This week we looked at the 1944 psychological thriller, GASLIGHT. If you've ever wondered what the supposed origin of the ubiquitous term was, you should check out this movie. It's got a great cast and wonderful cinematography.

As per, Q and I have a somewhat lengthy Christina & Quinn chat. If you'd like to jump to the discussion of the film, that starts around minute 19:02.

We talked about CITIZEN KANE in Quinnisode 31
We talked about SHADOW OF A DOUBT in Quinnisode 14
We talked about REBECCA in Quinnisode 86, and
We talked about WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE (which I am sure we will talk a lot more about next time), in Quinnisode 20
We talked about the goddess that is Angela Lansbury on Episode 99.

Stuff we talked about on the podcast:
$500 in 1944 dollars is about $8668 US dollars today.
According to The Mayo Clinic "Mental Health Crisis" has largely supplanted the term "Nervous Breakdown". Both refer to depression and or anxiety that prevent the patient from functioning as usual. The story about Orson Welles & Joseph Cotten
From Wikipedia, via Cotten's autobiography, Vanity Will Get You Somewhere
On June 8, 1981, Cotten experienced a heart attack followed by a stroke that affected his brain's speech center. He began years of therapy which in time made it possible for him to speak again. As he began to recover, he and Orson Welles talked on the phone each week for a couple of hours. "He was strong and supportive", Cotten wrote, "and whenever I used the wrong word (which was frequently) he would say, 'That's a much better word, Jo, I'm going to use it.'" He and Welles would meet for lunch and reminisce. When Cotten announced he had written a book, Welles asked for the manuscript and read it that night (Cotten, Joseph (1987). Vanity Will Get You Somewhere. San Francisco: Mercury House. ISBN 0-916515-17-6).
Welles died seven years before Cotten's death.

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week we look at two horror classics about possession: THE EXORCIST from the US & THE WAILING from South Korea.
We like this pairing because we find divergence in parenting and the nature of the devil depicted in each.

In Mom & Mac  chat, we talk about Mac's cat pooping, Mom half remembering Vonnegut, Mom overriding her social anxiety, tricks we use to trick our brains, what to do when we hear things we can[t explain in the house, cat ghosts, the motivation of ghosts, our mutual love for Boots Riley. I don't know why you would want to skip Mom & Mac chat, but if you do, skip to 13:16.

Want to guest with us? Have a suggestion for a guest or a film or topic? Please get in touch!

11 Sep 2023EVIL DEAD TRAP & THESIS: World of Foundational Horror Bonus: Episode 11500:39:52

Send us a text

For this episode, I am looking at two stories that involve snuff films: EVIL DEAD TRAP from Japan and THESIS / TESIS from Spain.

Neither makes a whole lot of sense, but each has its brilliant charms.

The kills in EVIL DEAD TRAP are great and the plot takes a serious left turn in the third act. THESIS is one of my favorite films despite some of the annoying plot holes. Everyone is a joy to behold, especially Fele Martinez, who, along with Eduardo Noriega appears in ABRE LOS OJOS, also directed by Alejandro Amenabar.

Coming up next is our show about writers, as it appears our Tech Horror Ep. may have been reclaimed by the gods of the Internet. We looked at IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS and BURNING.

Coming up, we have some wonderful shows with guests planned. Comfortilms Podcast will join us to talk THE WAGES OF FEAR & SORCEROR and Stefan MacDonald, From Drag Mitch to Hell will join us to talk VIDEODROME for its 40th anniversary!

We will be watching WENDELL & WILD and THE UNICORN WARS next, and speaking of Amenabar, after that, THE OTHERS & POLTERGEIST.

Be good and be good to each other. We love you, WoHos!

This week we look at two films that involve writers. Both have killer soundtracks. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS has great effects. BURNING has great cinematography. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS has a sweet runtime, BURNING has a Korean cinema-length runtime. Both have excellent performances and fun themes.

WoHos!

This week we are joined by our friends, Georgia and John Macey from the Comfort Films Podcast to examine two masterclasses in suspense, THE WAGES OF FEAR & SORCERER.

We examine the real horror, which is, of course, capitalism, in both these films. We also look at connections to the trickster figure in the folklore of Indigenous people, a queer reading of the relationship between Mario and Luigi, Mother Nature fighting back against the bald greed of the desperate characters in both of these films.

Have you seen these films? We would recommend you do!

Oh, what a fun film this is! This week Stefan MacDonald of Terminal Burrower Films and Drag Mitch to Hell joins me to discuss this mutual fave.

Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis in Australia hunting a serial killer in an 18-wheeler? Yes, Please! Throw in a good boy doing a serviceable dingo impression and some sweet suspense, and you've got yourself a good time.

Have you seen ROADGAMES? Why is it written that way? How cute are Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Cutis??

Also, if you have seen ROGUE & BLACK WATER, weigh in on which one is better (Hint! It's BLACK WATER)

**Please note that the pod proper ends around minute 51:00, but we have a little bit of an ADD Buddy Corner at the tail end.

Coming up on the main pod will be Mac's picks of animated films with WENDELL & WILD and UNICORN WARS. Next, we will be looking at ghost stories with THE OTHERS & POLTERGEIST. 11 Nov 2023POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS: Mom's Picks: Ghosts: They're Here!02:18:02

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week we looked at two movies related to Ghosts: POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS.
POLTERGEIST deals with the sins of capitalism and consumerism in the guise of some disruptove ghosties. Mac enjoyed this more than I did. I felt super sad at the depiction of the teenage daughter as an object of sexual attention and nothing much else.
Strong performances by JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, and Craig T. Nelson together with the gnarly practical effects are enough to recommend this film for both of us. We give it 4 TV's!

I was much more jazzed about the atmospheric THE OTHER by the ever-impressive filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar.
Mac and I split on the rewatchability of this film. What do you think?
I gave it 4.25 keys and Mac gave it a straight 4 keys.

This ep is tangent-heavy. We talk about oversharing strangers, materialism, the 80s and what should be left to the dustpin of history as well as ownership/property, photographing dead people, and the relationship between mind and body.

Coming up next are two special shows featuring friends of the show and esteemed WoHos, Stefan MacDonald discussing VIDEODROME and Martin Harries discussing DR. TERROR's HOUSE OF HORRORS.

On the next main show, we will be covering films about aliens: STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK.

26 Nov 2023STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK: Episode 122: Aliens!02:10:25

Send us a text

This week we looked at the cult classic, STARSHIP TROOPERS, which is a flick Mom can't believe she never saw. We both loved this one a ton.
We also looked at the low-budget gem, SLASH/BACK, from Canada, which talks about the friendship girls share as well as some aliens who land in a small Nunavut town. Mom went gaga for the scenery in this one.

There is lots of waffle up top in this one. If you want to jump to the movie talk, that starts at 26:18.

Next time on the main show we are looking at vamps with SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE from the US and RIGOR MORTIS from Hong Kong.

If you've ever wanted to know what would happen when you get three ADD brains together to discuss a 40-year-old Cronenberg classic, you have come to the right place!

Stefan MacDonald joined Mac and me to discuss a movie close to all of our hearts: VIDEODROME!

We had a lovely ramble, and I hope you enjoy it!

Even though I am sober, you can make a fun drinking game out of how many times I say. "I didn't understand ______ / "I was a little confused by______".  Also, eagle-eared WoHos can look out for when I call my youngest son, Mac, "Max". (I was a bit brain-fried, Y'all).

Topics/Tangents include: Oppositional Defiance Disorder, ADD, a random list of weird movies, analogue horror, and other Cronenberg films we enjoy.

Coming up on the main show, Mac and I will be discussing vampires as we look at THE SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE from the US and RIGOR MORTIS from Hong Kong.
We will also be doing a retrospective over the last year. Quinn will join me to look at the Quinnisodes, too.

Mom & Mac Chat: Names that drive up the wall, kids today, being too attached to our phone. Also, Mom is (Internet) autistic.

Mac liked SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE a whole lot because of the performances. Mom liked RIGOR MORTIS a lot because of the cool fight scenes and some of the folklore, confusing as it was.

31 Dec 20232023 Retrospective: Episode 125: Mac's Special Power01:02:13

Send us a text

WoHos!
What a year it has been for us at WoHo Central!
We produced 30 shows this year, and Mac and I hosted 22. This episode we look back, evaluate, reevaluate, and reconsider what we enjoyed and did not enjoy last year.

Mom's memory being what it is, here are some things discussed on the pod, plus the whole catalog of movies from 2023.
From our hearts to yours, we hope you had a wonderful year and we look forward to another one with you. We love you and DON'T go into the basement!

Mom has some symptoms of dyscalculia.
Alberto Vazquez, the director of UNICORN WARS, was the director of BIRD BOY: THE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN.
TESTAMENT is the movie about nuclear war from 1983 that I recommend over THE DAY AFTER.
Spider Robinson's character, Tom Hauptman, was imprisoned for 10 years, not 17. This may have been what I was thinking of. Who can say?

TL/DR:
Mom & Mac still hate V/H/S, The VVITCH, and Nicole Kidman

Favorite First Watch Overall: Mac: WENDELL & WILD (Ep. 119) / Mom: THE WAGES OF FEAR (Ep. 117)

Send us a text

WoHos!

This week, Rob and Ben from The Every Movie EVER! podcast joined us to discuss a movie that Means the World of Horror™ to them: MAY from 2002.

Topics discussed: Learning you are autistic and having it be no surprise to family members, podcasting as a mental health check-in, serendipity in finding movies, Netflix' old model for DVD through-the-mail service, watching horror at an inappropriately young age, the manic pixie dreamgirl/boy trope, surrealism and fantasy in film and how nice it is not to know what genre of film we are in.

Disclaimers for spoilers and adult language.

Mille grazie (I can be pretentious, too!) to Ben & Rob, who have a a delightful podcast which you should all check out. You should all also

Remember we love you and DON'T go into the basement!!

PS. I think I really misunderstood what Rob was saying that Blank was Frank from DONNIE DARKO. Also, I think Rob conflated THE CREEPING FLESH with TERROR TRAIN? But in the end, I think we were mostly sympatico through most of this pod, so what's a little muddle among friends?

PPS. I put a video version of the podcast up on our YouTube Channel. You can check it out if you want to see our beautiful faces.

Next on the Quinnisode: FARGO
Next on the main show: Coming-of-age films: THE INNOCENTS from Norway and THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from the US.

07 Mar 2024THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER & THE INNOCENTS: Episode 129: If You Can Hear Me, I Love You02:05:48

Send us a text

WoHos! The theme this time is "Loss of Innocence". We reviewed THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER from the US & THE INNOCENTS from Norway.

We enjoyed the exploration of the distance that grows between a child and parent during adolescence in THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER. Everyone can relate to that feeling, but thankfully only a few will ever know the horrifying reality our protag Tyler feels in THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER.

In THE INNOCENTS the inherent powerlessness is what is examined in a world where children suddenly discover they have spernatural powers. CW: Cat harm and cat death--also kid harm and kid death--also parent harm and parent death.

Also surprise spoiler for THE DEN at

We had a good discussion about some missteps the directors take, the use and misuse of does the dog die website, the depiction of a character with nonverbal autism and whether or not this depiction was problematic,

Mac, Quinn, and I have all been sick this season. It's Q's turn currently, but when she is better, we will do a Quinnisode on maybe my all-time favorite movie? FARGO.

Next on the main show we will be looking at movies involving mental illness with JACOB'S LADDER from the US & THE BABADOOK from Australia.

Send us a text

Hey there, Q-Balls and WoHos!

Quinn was nice enough to join me for a ramble about one of my favorite movies of all time: FARGO.

Our conversation assumes a knowledge of the film. If you haven't seen it, please do yourself a favor and watch it or rewatch it!!

From Wikipedia: Fargo is a 1996 black comedy crime film written, directed and produced by Joel and Ethan Coen. Frances McDormand stars as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant Minnesota police chief investigating a triple homicide that takes place after a desperate car salesman (William H. Macy) hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife in order to extort a hefty ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell). The film was an American and British co-production.

Next time on the Quinnisode, we will be looking at SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Next time on the main show, Mac & I will be looking at two SLASHERS: THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (1982) from the US & ANATOMIE/ANATOMY (2000) from Germany.

11 Apr 2024THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (1982) & ANATOMIE/ANATOMY: Episode 132: Kim in the Fridge: Slashers!01:55:44

Send us a text

WoHos!!

We return to slashers and look at THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE from 1982 and ANATOMIE/ANATOMY from Germany. One of these might be called feminist and one of these...would not.

Mac and I had a great ol' ramble about springtime, the myth of expertise, sleepovers, pretty privilege, and wasted opportunities.

We hope you enjoy the show! If so, please tell all your friends all about us, download all our back eps, adopt a kitty, or call your mom. Or if you don't want to talk to your mom, call me! (336-338-8665)

Next time we will be discussing films involving magical realism with PAN'S LABYRINTH from Spain & MEN from the US.

Remember, WoHos! We love you & DON'T go into the basement!!

WoHos!!

We talked so much about MEN that we had to break the pods into two parts. Although we make some passing references to MEN, this podcast is about Guillermo del Toro's 2006 classic, PAN'S LABYRINTH.

Shout out to https://www.theotherfolk.blog/dissections/pans-labyrinth

I will have the podcast about MEN out soon. Stay tuned, also, for my chat with filmmaker Stefan MacDonald, who came on to talk THE EDGE and ALLIGATOR.

Fair warning, we go into a tangent about 45 minutes in.

02 May 2024MEN: Episode 134: Scrumping!01:39:48

Send us a text

Hi, WoHos!

This week we looked at Alex Garland's MEN. Yep. We did that.

Mom was at first more sympathetic to Garland's jazzy style of filmmaking, but that didn't last long when we dove deeper into it.

There is a lot to recommend this, but there is a lot that suggests that you may want to run far, far away from this one and watch CIVIL WAR instead.

Mom & Mac chat: Working out, HR not responding, panic attacks, and private stuff.
The movie talk starts at 11:15.

Next time we are talking about movies about stalkers with SINGLE WHITE FEMALE from the US and THE CRY OF THE OWL, which is an American-British-Canadian-French-German co-production (according to Wikipedia). It is based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, so you know Mom is onboard!

Thanks for all your support. If you disagree with our takes, please get in touch. I'd love to hear your interpretations!

Remember, We LOVE you, WOHOS.  DON'T go into the basement!
xx

Send us a text

WoHos! Q-Balls!

Ms. Q is back to talk with me about how her Introduction to Film students reacted to this film. It was nice to revisit this classic and we had a nice ramble about their perceptive insights.

We also are such fans of Brooke Smith and Ted Levine as well as Jonathan Demme's direction and Tak Fujimoto's cinematography.

We also talk about the minor car accident Quinn was in (she's fine), the difference between Quinn's and my brain, the TV show my dead mom would have loved, Mac's amazing, prescient pattern recognition, "kids today", escape rooms, and what a good teacher Quinn is. Plus what the end credits of PEARL have in common with this film.

This is being released on Quinn's actual birthday, so go ahead and wish her a Happy Birthday. You can find her at instagram.com/quinnmcl03!

Next up on the main show Mac and I will be looking at squishy body horror with SOCIETY and eXistenZ. Next up on the Quinnisode, Quinn and I will be spotlighting Jesse Plemons.

Remember, Q-Balls and WoHos, we love you, don't go into the basement, and more dicks!

Send us a text

WoHos!

We go on quite a ramble on a number of subjects. Definitely check out the Chapter Markers for this one, if you are just here for the film talk.

I make a number of references to the first conversation we had about eXistenZ.  By way of explanation, awhile back, we had paired eXistenZ with TETSUO: THE IRON MAN, but the episode was lost. We are splitting our body horror shows into squishy body horror and metallic body horror. Part 1 of squishy was SOCIETY and for our metallic series, we are looking at TETSUO: THE IRON MAN and TITANE.

Next time, we are looking at Exploitation films with THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1977) from the US and a yet-to-be-determined International film (HIGH LANE, which was originally on the docket is only available in our area in a dubbed form and I cannot). Stay tuned!

After that, we are doing a pair that I have been looking forward to all year: Grim AF movies with BRAZIL from the UK and WHEN EVIL LURKS/CUANDO ACECHA LA MALDAD from Argentina.

Get in touch/Tell all your friends/You know the drill, WoHos!

We looked at Wes Craven's Hill People cannibal fest, THE HILLS HAVE EYES from 1977 and the truly hilarious modern Aussie horror comedy, 100 BLOODY ACRES.

Sidebars include:
What a pretty color combo orange and blue are
Intrusive thoughts and number OCD
Do men not know how women's biology work?
The ridiculous state of affairs for women's health int he US in 2024.

Next time we are covering two films that can only be described as Grim AF: BRAZIL from 1985 and WHEN EVIL LURKS from 2023.

WoHos!

This film is one of the ones who made me (Mom/Christina), but Mac really loves it, so this is a huge win for me. Hope you like our talk. We spoke so much, we decided to release this ep on its own so we could release out Part 2 with WHEN EVIL LURKS separately.

Conversation detours include: Preference for audiobooks, Mom's making art (check out gsoglassworks.com)! My Eye Doctor, Mac doesn't know about rollerball typewriters, connections to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Double plus chemical peels, Office work is a kind of hell, Mom's filed trip to the porno store, If you didn't read the whole article, do not talk to me about it!

Next time we will have Part 2 of Grim AF films with WHEN EVIL LURKS from Argentina.

After that, we are looking at two films in the Body Horror (Metallic) sub-genre: TITANE from France and TETSUO: THE IRON MAN from Japan.

On the bonus show. Quinn and I will be discussing some films and TV show performances from Jesse Plemons. Stefan MacDonald will join me for a blindspot episode where we will look at THE DEVIL RIDES OUT & JAWS 2. And Georgia & John Macey from the Comfortfills Podcast will join us to discuss X & PEARL.

13 Jul 2024The Jesse Plemons Appreciation Society: Episode 142: The Plemisode with Quinn McLaughlin01:06:33

Send us a text

Q-Balls,

Quinn is back to talk with me about a couple to things we enjoy Jesse Plemons in: GAME NIGHT, THE USS CALLISTER, and FARGO, Season 2.

Quinn is in Michigan hanging out at the Senior Center now that she has found her new car.

Christina has a new website you should check out and buy things from: gsoglassworks.com. She is enjoying making art and dreading going back to work.

GAME NIGHT, from 2018: Max and Annie's weekly game night gets kicked up a notch when Max's brother Brooks arranges a murder mystery party -- complete with fake thugs and federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it's all supposed to be part of the game. As the competitors set out to solve the case, they start to learn that neither the game nor Brooks are what they seem to be. The friends soon find themselves in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn over the course of one chaotic night.

USS Callister, Black Mirror, Season 4, Episode 1, from 2017. By day, Robert Daly is the CTO of a tech-entertainment company, but by night he is in his own private cinematic universe -- based on a TV show he watched as a child -- as the commander of a starship exploring new worlds.

Fargo, Season 2 from 2015: The second season of Fargo, an American anthology black comedy–crime drama television series created by Noah Hawley, premiered on October 12, 2015, on the basic cable network FX. Its principal cast is Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, and Ted Danson.

We did a whole squad pod episode on John C. Reilly way back in Episode 33.

Listen! I don't ask for a lot, but please go check out my website and buy some things! If you don't feel like that, just follow me at instagram.com/gsoglassworks.

We love you, Q-Balls. More dicks!

When we made this pairing on paper back in December, little did not know how well these two films would gel together, but boy do they ever! Zombies! Reanimated guts! Pet deaths! Blood!

We got (delightedly) grossed out by both of these films and we had a first for the podcast: One of us tapped out on one of the films without finishing it. Who was it and which film?

Next up we have some guest episodes to pepper our Fall J-Horror and K-Horror short series.

Martin from the Film vs. Film Podcast will discuss Prano Bailey-Bond's film, CENSOR, and Chrissy Champagne from Residue: A True Crime Podcast will return to discuss HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT II.

Our first two films in our J-Horror and K-Horror film series will be ONIBABA from Japan & THE HOUSEMAID (1960) from Korea.
