Feed and/or Supplement is one of the bigger line items in a ranch budget.  So, what if we took a little time to put some thought behind our feeding program in an effort to save money.  Dr. Mark Johnson, from Oklahoma State University Extension is my guest as he shares with us what we can do to make sure we are being both efficient and effective with our feeding program.  He’ll work through a scenario that will show us how we can evaluate our feed costs on more than just the price per ton, but rather what will meet the nutritional needs and objectives of the livestock at the lowest cost per day.

The cost of not getting the second calf from a heifer you either bought our developed is a big hit.  Karla Wilke, (University of Nebraska) joins us today as we go through several discuss points regarding getting that "elusive" second calf. While some would say “don’t baby the girl”, there could be some flaws in that theory.  And what about the genetics we are breeding into our herd and how it should relate to our physical environment. Adding ZINC can reduce the impacts of muscle disease in cattle.  Muscle Fatigue, which can be a precursor to animals not getting up and eating, thus leading to added stress, which leads to sickness.  Dr. Stephanie Hansen, with Iowa State University (link to press release) has been leading the latest research on benefits of added zinc into the diet of the cattle. Today will review the results of two studies they have done that focuses on added zinc supplementation both after transportation and prior to transportation.  We’ll discuss the optimal level, how you can add it, and the cost.  Zinc… number 30 on the periodical table, but maybe it should be number 1 on your list to utilize this fall.

It's more about the "unknown" than the "known" when it comes to Avian Influenza (Bird Flu). Dr. Fred Gingrich, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, is my guest today as we discussed the Influenza Type A H5N1 outbreak now being confirmed in Dairy Cattle.  As a beef cattle rancher I have A LOT of questions like... Are beef cows susceptible? What are the symptoms? How is it transferred? It's called the "Silent Thief of Productivity"... we’re talking about Johne’s Disease.  A disease that is highly contagious and fatal, because there is no cure for it.  For most of us we assume it’s a disease that you see in the dairy industry, but now, we are starting to see it showing up in the beef herd. Dr. Susanne Hickley (Neogen) is back as my guest as we discuss what causes it Johne's Disease, the four stages, what kind of testing is available, what can we do to manage against it, and why it is considered to be the “Silent Thief of Productivity”.  But a huge concern is that the first two stage of Johne’s is not visible, but they are contagious. So, once an animal reaches visible stages, how many more cattle in your herd are infected? Simple Supply and Demand indicated the Ranchers are going to have leverage for the next few years.  Clint Berry, Marketing Rep for Superior Livestock joins us as we work through the CattleFax projections for 2024.  The US Beef Cattle herd is the smallest since 1961 and expansion of the US herd appears to be rather slow.  What could be causing that?  We’ll talk through some of the fundamentals from corn and hay prices to consumer demand then break down the report as we look at projected prices from Fat Cattle down through Feeder Steers and Calves as well as the Cull Cow Market and the Bred Cattle Market.
