11 Nov 2021Episode 14: Looking back on "Live What You Love" with Ann Skinner (Insights)00:13:45

Fear of stepping into the unknown can be paralysing. To dance with uncertainty takes courage, love, and a willingness to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. In this solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Ann Skinner - The Heartworker and explore how upgrading the questions we ask ourselves can have life changing results.

21 Jan 2022Episode 25: If Not Me, Then Who? with Emma Barnes00:44:48

A mission driven by fury. What a place to start! Sometimes the reason we stumble on our mission is because something needs doing and no-one else is doing it. So we just start and keep doing what needs to be done, one step at a time.

That’s Emma’s story. She took one step at a time to change the world of publishing because she could see what would be possible if publishers learned to code. Frustrated by the lack of technical literacy in the industry, she started by teaching herself how to code in order to build a bibliographic system and teach others.

Her story is one of frustration, fury and an absolute refusal to countenance the idea of failure; such is the strength of Emma’s belief that writing is the key to changing the world, and data management is the key to liberty.  She shares her experience of running a business, being a mum (and home schooling!)  and surviving the pendulum swing when you walk away from earlier career choices.

ABOUT MY GUEST: EMMA BARNES

Emma Barnes is a publisher, programmer and activist on a mission to eradicate menial drudgework from the jobs of people in book publishing. She founded and runs Snowbooks.com, MakeOurBook.com and Consonance.app, whose technical literacy initiatives include dayofcode.co.ukjustsimply.dev and sideprojectsummer.com.

23 Sep 2022#062 Looking back on "Are You a Super-Helper?" with Jess Baker00:15:40

Are you a compulsive helper and, if so, what drives you or compels you to help others, even when helping results in your own needs being ignored and neglected?

In last week’s interview, business psychologist Jess Baker shared her own journey as a super-helper. Her mission to help others was to become her life’s work, even though this has often been to the detriment of her own wellbeing.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by reflecting on the clarity of Jess’s mission and the powerful impact of those around her in enabling her to see the difference she too could make by becoming a helper.  I then look at what we can learn from Jess’s quest to understand who she really is and her purposeful commitment to being her best self in her mission to help others.

If you’re looking to be your best self in your mission, or you know it’s time to do the personal inner-work that will take your mission to the next level, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

30 Dec 2021Episode 22: Looking back on "It's Not About You" with Suzanne Dibble00:18:10

Have you ever looked at someone further along the path to you, and wished you were them? Or looked at them and allowed your mental monkeys to convince you that you could *never* be them?

That you’ll never be able to do what they do?
That you’ll never have what they have?
That you’ll never be who they are?

What if, rather than comparing yourself with the person you see, you looked beyond them to the difference they had made, and worked out how you could do that, or be that, in your own way instead?

In my latest solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Suzanne Dibble and her powerful reminder that it’s not about us. She tells a wonderful story about having dinner with Richard Branson which illustrates perfectly that it’s never about us. It’s all about the people we serve. And when we make it all about our people, and being the best we can be in service of them (and not us!), what becomes possible is a miracle.

And in a world that needs miracles…. Well, let’s just say we all need to create a little more possibility!  If you’d like to talk about how you move from doing more to BEING more in your mission, click here to book a Mission Possible call via my website.

04 Mar 2022Episode 31: Being More - The Season Two Heartbeats00:21:29

Sometimes we don’t yet know the detail of our calling, we just know we’re here for ‘more’, and we heard a lot about ‘more’ in Season Two.  It was a common theme, running through many interviews, as each guest shared their own unique experience of being called to do and be more, in their mission. For some guests, it called into question who they are; for others, there was a sense of looking to the future and how they want to be remembered as a result of the mission they have been chosen to fulfil.

As I look back over the season, there really was something for everyone:

  • Catherine Watkin on how we know if we are a Woman on a Mission
  • Dr Liz O’Riordan on legacy and rebuilding her very life purpose
  • Suzanne Dibble on the ripples of impact we unknowingly create
  • Dr Maggie Landes on stepping out from the crowd when you know you’re here to do ‘more’
  • Emma Barnes on refusing to countenance failure and taking one step at a time
  • Tara Newman on turning struggle into strength by putting mission before money; and
  • Karen Laos on finding her way to freedom so that others can find their voice

In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and BE more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.

08 Jul 2022#051 Being 10% Braver with Vivienne Porritt OBE01:10:18

Every sector has its secrets. Some are better hidden than others and it took time for Vivienne Porritt to stumble upon some of the shocking secrets that launched her mission in the world of education.

Vivienne is a woman with two missions. Her determination to help every child to have their best shot at what education can do is born from her own ‘less than positive’ childhood.

And when she discovered how the unfair treatment of women in education was limiting the potential of what children could achieve, her deeply held values of equity, fairness and social justice drove her to take ever more impactful action.

Vivienne’s second mission began with the discovery of the massive gender pay gap in education. She worked with fellow volunteers, using Twitter as a social platform, to launch what became a global movement with over 43,000 members in 21 countries around the world.

In this inspirational conversation, co-founder and strategic leader of @WomenEd, Vivienne Porritt OBE describes how building a community and sharing their experiences exposed the hidden secrets AND created a voice to be reckoned with, in their mission to reduce racial and gender inequality and enable more women in education to have the choice to progress on their leadership journey.

Having rebuilt her confidence, Vivienne now helps other women to be brave and courageous in removing barriers to choice and progress, so they can be who they want to be in their leadership career.

This episode is for anyone who wants to learn more about the inequalities in education, and be more confident and impactful in leading change.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: VIVIENNE PORRITT OBE (FULL BIO ON PODPAGE)

Vivienne Porritt, OBE, is a leadership consultant supporting school and trust leaders with vision, strategy, professional learning and development, and impact evaluation.

Vivienne is, joyously, one of the Co-founders and Global Strategic Leaders of WomenEd, a community that empowers aspiring and existing women leaders in education. Vivienne is also Vice President of the Chartered College of Teaching, a Non-Exec Board Member of Captiva Learning Ltd and a member of FED Advisory Council and the Eko Trust as well as the Chair of the Strategic Board for the North London Teaching School Hub.

Previously, Vivienne was a secondary headteacher and Director for School Partnerships at UCL Institute of Education. She writes for TES and academic journals and is co-editor of 10%braver: Inspiring Women to Lead Education (Sage, 2019) and Being 10%braver (Corwin, 2021).

Vivienne’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page.

01 Jul 2022#050: Looking back on "I Had The Key All Along" with Caroline Strawson00:15:11

There’s a moment in every woman’s mission when we realise that it’s down to us. Not because other people don’t care or aren’t interested, but because we are the only person that can accept our unique calling and respond in the unique way that only we can.

So stop waiting.

For Caroline Strawson that moment came when she recognised that only she could break free from her life-long cage of expectation; a cage compounded by her deeply traumatic experience of grief, shame and loss.

As she realised, in that moment, that no-one else was coming to rescue her, Caroline finally understood that she had held the key all along. That key opened her invisible cage and unleashed the power, deep within, to transform her life.

Looking back on our conversation, I reflect on what we can learn from Caroline’s experience of transition - from the scariest moment of her life to the moment of absolute liberation from everything that held her back.

If you’re ready to stop waiting, and to boldly step into your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

The I Gotta Be Me Experience with Sue Revell

20 May 2022Episode 43: Empathy: The Path to Peace with Jo Berry00:52:08

A mission can be driven by a whole gamut of life experiences. Jo Berry’s mission began in 1984, when her father was killed by the IRA in the Brighton Hotel bombing. Jo describes trying to stop revenge as being like trying to stop gravity and yet, almost immediately, she made a silent commitment to find a way to bring something positive out of her devastating loss.

Choosing peace over revenge, Jo courageously chose a journey with no map. She knew she would never again be the person she had been prior to the bombing but she also didn’t want the enemy, or the feeling of being at war, that had penetrated her life.

Sixteen years after her father was killed, Jo first met with the man responsible, Pat Magee. Their initial three-hour meeting led to them speaking, on over 300 occasions, on a shared platform around the world.

In this extraordinary conversation, Jo describes her path to peace as a blend of curiosity, empathy and compassion. She shares how, by making her motivation bigger than her fears, so much more was possible in her mission. This episode is for anyone who wants to learn more about creating peace and harmony out of conflict and adversity.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: JO BERRY

Jo Berry is an inspiring speaker who works to resolve conflict around the world. Sixteen years after her father was killed by an IRA bomb, Jo first met with the man responsible, Pat Magee. This initial three-hour meeting led to them speaking on over three hundred occasions, on a shared platform around the world. Their unusual relationship has been told in the BBC documentary "Facing the Enemy", was featured in the film "Beyond Right and Wrong", and inspired "The Bomb", a play by Kevin Dyer.

The founder of the charity ‘Building Bridges for Peace’, Jo advocates that unbounded empathy is the biggest weapon we have to end conflict. With political, religious and racial divides deepening as global and local events unfold, her words offer a message of hope and encourage us all to see the humanity in others.

24 Nov 2021Episode 16: Introducing..... Season Two00:06:16

Whether you've just found us, or you're a seasoned expert listener (no pun intended!) returning from Season One, welcome to the second season of the Women on a Mission Show.

In this short bonus episode, I introduce you to my guests for Season Two, and tell you a little about why I've invited them to join me and what you can expect from our conversations.

Each one of them has a precious story that will encourage us to do and BE more when all is going well, and will also fill us with inspiration when we need to keep going too.

25 Feb 2022Episode 30: Looking back on "Being Free To Be Me" with Karen Laos00:15:19

Ready for more.  Deep down, you know that where you are now is no longer enough, but you don’t yet know what “more” looks like.

What do you do when you absolutely know you aren’t in the right place to be your best self, but you can’t yet see what lies ahead or the path to your escape?

This is an episode about finding your voice so that you can speak up and be heard. When you’re no longer afraid of what other people might think, it’s amazing how much “more” becomes possible.

When what you do and how you do it are completely aligned with who you are and how you express it, that alignment frees you to work from a place of flow and genius, so that you can do your best work in your mission to make the world a better place.

In this week’s solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Karen Laos, professional speaker, communication specialist and podcast host. As we consider her experience of finding her voice, there are many deeply helpful insights in her journey from frustration and fear towards freedom and fulfilment.

If you know it’s time to find your voice so that you too can experience the freedom to be your very best self in your mission, take a listen now.

01 May 2023#092: Looking back on "What's Keeping You Stuck?" with Janey Lee Grace00:18:49

Which life are you living?  Is it the life you’ve grown used to and don’t know how to change, or is it the life that you have chosen to create?

In last week’s interview (#091) I talked to well-known author, speaker and former BBC radio presenter, Janey Lee Grace - founder of The Sober Club. Quitting the booze was the missing link for Janey, enabling her to find her purpose and live her best life.

What would be possible for you if you were no longer stuck and, instead, living the life you would choose to create?

Looking back on our conversation, this week I explore what we can learn from Janey about getting unstuck and offer eight suggestions to help you move toward the life you want to live.

If you’re a woman on a mission who is feeling stuck, or you’re experiencing resistance that is stopping you moving forward in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

12 Aug 2022#056 Looking back on "Scientists Are Human Too!" with Dr Emma Yhnell00:19:35

If you could improve one thing so that other people had a better understanding of the mission you are leading, what would it be? Maybe you would work on the key messages they need to know? Maybe you would develop your skills and style as a communicator? Or perhaps you would learn more about your audience and what they need from you in order to engage at the level you would like?

Imagine the difference you could create if your message, your delivery and your understanding were completely aligned!

Dr Emma Yhnell showed us that that is exactly what happens when you combine a deeply rooted mission with the passion for honing your message to meet the needs of your audience; the honesty to not shy away from being refreshingly different; the humanity to (literally) meet people where they are; and a commitment to creating impactful change.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by wondering what might have been different if, at an early age, our future was determined by our strengths rather than our weaknesses. I then look at our responsibility to transform knowledge into learning in a way that enables us to reach and connect with the hearts and minds of those who can truly help us in our mission to change the world.

If you’re looking to have greater influence and you are ready to create meaningful connection in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

The I Gotta Be Me Experience with Sue Revell

28 Oct 2022#067: You Get What You Settle For! with Heather Anstey-Myers01:11:09

Carrying the weight of family expectation can be an enormous load to carry, for any child.  Whether those expectations are high or low, they lead to assumptions that determine the behaviours, beliefs and values of the growing child, particularly if that young person perceives those expectations to be of limitation rather than ambition.

At the moment where everything changed for Heather, she was watching the renowned movie of the road trip taken by Thelma and Louise. And as she listened, she became aware of six words that were to change the trajectory of her own beliefs and values for the next thirty plus years:

You get what you settle for.

Those six words quickly gave Heather the permission, that she didn’t even know she needed, to check in with herself about what was acceptable in her life, and what had to change. It’s a process that she has adopted throughout her extensive leadership career, and personal life. She shares how a further significant influence, the serenity prayer, has helped her to navigate the balance between having the courage to consciously change the things she can’t accept, the serenity to consciously accept what can’t be changed, and the wisdom to know the difference.

In this deeply honest and personal conversation, Heather Anstey-Myers shares her story of navigating a challenging childhood, and how the lessons she learned have impacted her leadership career, since discovering she alone had the power to change in her 20’s.

This episode is for anyone who is tired of settling for less than they really want and would like to learn how to make better, conscious choices to change or surrender.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: HEATHER ANSTEY-MYERS

Heather Anstey-Myers is CEO of Manufacturing Wales and Interim Chief Executive of Business News Wales. In addition to being a former senior public servant, Heather was previously Chief Exec of Chambers Wales (part of the British Chambers of Commerce) and also the CEO of the widely acclaimed Abergavenny Food Festival - one of the biggest food events in the UK.  Widely recognised as one of the most influential business voices in Wales, Heather is one of the leading commentators and a strong articulate business voice who speaks up for the needs of SME's in Wales.

18 Dec 2021Episode 20: Looking back on "How do I Want to be Remembered" with Dr Liz O'Riordan00:16:43

If you’ve ever been through an experience that re-defines who you are, you will recognise some of the questions posed in this episode. Whether it’s illness, relationship change, loss, redundancy, or another life-changing event, we eventually reach a point where we need to make sense of what has happened and work out what’s next and how we get there.  We find ourselves at a point where we have to work out what’s important to us now, how to define ourselves in our new circumstances and what’s the ultimate purpose that will keep us getting out of bed in the morning in our new reality.

In this mini episode, we look back at my conversation with Dr Liz O’Riordan and consider whether it’s the destination or the journey that’s important in re-defining who we are and the future we want to create.

07 Jul 2023#100: Looking back on: Bravery, Courage & Guts! with Viv Groskop00:19:12

Is it possible to be effortlessly confident and, if so, how much work does it take? And what difference would it make in your world if you could trust yourself to feel at ease and confident when it matters most?

In last week’s interview (#099) I talked to Viv Groskop, award-winning writer, comedian, TV and radio presenter. Viv’s podcast, How To Own The Room, was a big inspiration in launching this show, and plays a big part in Viv’s mission to encourage women to find their voice and be heard.

In our Insights episode, I reflect on three areas that Viv talked about: the concept of ‘happy high status’, the importance of self-modelling and the significance of tiny moments.

If you’re a woman who’d love to feel effortlessly confident in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

Being Unstoppable: The Workbook

26 Aug 2022#058 Looking back on "Who Moved The Comfort Zone?" with Jane Duncan Rogers00:15:33

If you could choose between staying stuck in your zone of comfort and stepping up, into your zone of genius, which would you choose? It may not seem that simple a choice, but when your mission is the thing you can’t NOT do, there is something about the act of surrender that makes stepping into our mission easier than we might think.

Imagine what would be possible in your mission if, this time, you stepped out of your comfort zone – never to return to it again!

Jane Duncan Rogers showed us that looking inside ourselves, trusting that we have the answers, and surrendering to our calling are three of the biggest steps that can help us to make (and keep!) our mission bigger than our fears.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by reflecting on my own experience of end of life planning and the steps that I could personally take to help move Jane’s mission forward. I then look at what we can learn from Jane’s experience of trusting the universe to teach us who we need to BE to impactfully lead our mission.

If you’re ready to learn how to handle less comfort and more growth in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

19 Feb 2023#082: Looking back on "I Just Couldn't Find My Voice!" with Lou Featherstone00:15:09

Have you ever wished you had more confidence? Or sat around waiting to do something until you feel more confident to make a start? Or worse still, missed out on that next big thing because you just weren’t confident enough to even try?

In last week’s interview (#081) I talked to positivity rebel and accidental mid-life influencer, Lou Featherstone, who not so very long ago couldn’t find her voice or bring herself to show her teeth on camera. Some 70,000 Instagram followers later, Lou discovered that the more she showed up on camera, the more people followed her and the more confident she became.  Why? Because confidence is a result, not a requirement!!

Looking back on our conversation, in this week’s episode I reflect on the biggest mistake we make around confidence and why confidence is so much more than the things that we do. Most importantly I share how, once we understand what true confidence is, no-one can take it away from us.

If you’re a woman on a mission who would love to find your voice and feel more confident in who you are becoming in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

05 Aug 2022#055 Scientists Are People Too! with Dr Emma Yhnell00:49:49

Whether she's taking jelly moulds into schools to teach children about brain function or taking bubbles onto the streets of Cardiff to teach the public about research, Emma is determined to help us see science differently.

Emma is on a mission to make science accessible and inclusive to different audiences and, in doing so, to change traditional perspectives of what science is and who scientists really are. As you will hear, her passion for research and how it is communicated is infectious, and her willingness to stand out from the crowd and be different is utterly inspirational.

In this warm, funny and deeply honest conversation, award-winning science communicator and senior lecturer, Dr Emma Yhnell, shares how her story began with the upsetting childhood realisation that doctors can’t fix everything. As her interest in science and research grew, so did her calling to be a different type of scientist - untangling the academically technical and translating it into entertaining, relevant and accessible content.

A woman on many missions, Emma is now teaching and inspiring the next generation of budding scientists to find and communicate the message at the heart of however they go on to change the world too.

This episode is for anyone who has an important message to communicate and would like some inspiration to overcome their resistance and speak out. It’s also for anyone looking for an incredible STEM role model!

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: DR EMMA YHNELL

Dr Emma Yhnell is an award-winning science communicator and senior lecturer based at Cardiff University. Emma is a respected academic who has built a reputation for her ability to untangle the academically technical and translate it into entertaining, relevant and accessible content. 18 Nov 2022#070: Looking back on “Taking Up Your Own Space” with Honor Wilson-Fletcher00:18:32

Are you taking up your own space in the world?  And what does it mean, for you and your mission, when you diminish your presence through your physical movement and positioning, the language you choose or the thoughts you allow to occupy prime space in your mind?

In last week’s interview (#069) I talked to Chief Executive of the British Exploring Society, Honor Wilson Fletcher. During our conversation she shared how leaving home, and seeing the world through the eyes of those around her, had been a powerful catalyst in her mission to create fairness of opportunity for girls and women.

Looking back on our conversation, I explore three key themes that stood out for me: the value of safe space in enabling brave thinking and the exploration of opportunity and possibility;  the power of servant leadership; and the importance of taking up your own space in the world.

If you’re looking to think, dream & BE more creative and brave  in the change you are leading, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

19 Apr 2023#090: Looking back on "Midlife: Crisis or Growth Spurt?" with Dara Goldberg00:19:19

What does it mean to be in midlife?  What if, instead of it being the end of everything you thought you knew, it was the most wonderful springboard to what lies ahead?

In last week’s interview (#089) I talked to Dara Goldberg, founder of the Endless Beauty Collective. Reaching the age of 42yrs changed everything for Dara and catapulted her right into the heart of her mission.

At the very point she feared she was ‘losing it’, she realised she was gaining SO much more!

Looking back on our conversation, this week I explore what we can learn from Dara about showing up out of choice and living on our own terms.

If you’re a woman on a mission who would love to embrace midlife and breathe new life into your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

17 Mar 2023#086: Looking back on "Finding the Gift Inside Ourselves" with Veronica Pullen00:19:01

What makes a gift...a gift?  How do you recognise gifts that don’t come beautifully wrapped with a bow, and what is the value in a gift you have to grow into?

In last week’s interview (#085) I talked to online marketing and copywriting expert Veronica Pullen. Veronica is a woman on many missions and our conversation kept coming back to the importance of finding, honouring and then thriving on the unique gifts that are ours alone to share.

So how do we do that?

Looking back on our conversation, this week I reflect on the lessons we can learn from Veronica in searching for the gifts, even in the most challenging of life experiences. I also explore the importance of doing the inner work because your mission only grows as fast as you do!

If you’re a woman on a mission who would love to sky-rocket your personal impact, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

02 Dec 2022#072: Looking back on "Learning to Live My Best Life" with Kathryn Billing00:20:04

Are you living your best life? What does that mean for you? For some people it’s about power, money or status and all that they dream that will bring. For other people it’s about the quest for fulfilment, answering their calling and realising their full potential.

In last week’s interview (#071) I talked to Chief Fire Officer for Cornwall Fire & Rescue, Kathryn Billing. During our conversation she shared how a life of service to her community had become a personal search for deepening fulfilment, and her true sense of self, as she navigated the career path and stepped into leadership.

Looking back on our conversation, I explore three key themes that stood out for me: the pursuit of self-discovery, the power of language to create influence & impact, and the desire for self-actualisation and to be our best self.

If you’re looking to find fulfilment and deepen your understanding of who you need to be to realise your full potential, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

11 Feb 2022Episode 28: Looking back on "Mission over Money" with Tara Newman00:17:28

Money.  A taboo topic that’s still in the Top 10 of subjects to avoid in polite conversation. Particularly if you’re a woman. Money is a really loaded topic and, given the connection we often create between money and self worth, a troubled relationship with money can often mean a troubled relationship with our mission, and ourselves.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. We can do ‘the work’ to clean up our thoughts, beliefs, values and behaviours and, in doing so, open up a whole new way of BEing around money. When we re-write our money story, we transform how we show up in the world and the difference we can make in our mission.

In this week’s solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Tara Newman, the founder and Chief Executive of the Bold Profit Academy, to see what insights we can learn from her money story. It’s a story that encompasses neuro-diversity, entrepreneurial poverty, bankruptcy, and the ultimate surrender demanded by ultimate transformation.

If you know it’s time to re-write your money story so that you can show up in your mission in a new way, take a listen now.

05 May 2023#093: Can We Care Too Much As Leaders? with Frances Beecher00:46:45

Walking alongside those experiencing homelessness, domestic abuse, and sexual violence, my guest this week is one of the most humble leaders you will meet. Frances Beecher is the Chief Executive of Llamau, Wales leading homeless charity supporting vulnerable women and disenfranchised young people.  Do listen in as, determined to make an impact, Frances shares some deeply honest and powerful learning from her career as a third sector leader: including her refusal to settle for anything less than her best, and the impact that has had on those around her.

This episode is for women who feel a deep calling to serve, and want to know how to use power and influence differently in order to feel fulfilled and make a difference.

09 Feb 2023#081: I Just Couldn't Find My Voice! with Lou Featherstone01:20:10

How many of us can say that we’ve blown our whole life up for our mission? If you’re one of the 69,000 people who follow LuinLuland on Instagram you could be forgiven for thinking that her life is one long transatlantic venture of vintage visibility.

It’s almost unthinkable that someone with such vibrance, energy and passion in front of the camera would once (only a few years ago!) have struggled to show her teeth and find her voice.

So what happened? A diverse career that includes children’s social care in Cardiff, advertising in London, and creating vintage experiences with Airbnb in Portland took a new turn after the pandemic. Spurred on by an unexpected midlife encounter with the Vagina Whisperer, Lou’s increasing online visibility and the response of those who were drawn to her radiant online presence, all helped her to find her voice.

Ready to return to the UK, Lou prepared to leave her family and crowd-sourced the purchase of a lime green & shocking pink 35ft vintage disco motorhome, and began her drive across America on the Self Love Revolution tour (now in the UK!), encouraging other women to love themselves too.

Lou Featherstone is an accidental middle age influencer and positivity rebel (more below).

This episode is for women who want to find their own voice, step out of their comfort zone and feel empowered to love who they really are.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: LOU FEATHERSTONE (FULL BIO ON PODPAGE)

18 Mar 2022Episode 34: Looking back on "Is It Time To Step Up?" with Sarah Day00:16:48

What if today is the day you say YES?!  What if you were to decide, right now, to say yes to invitations, yes to challenges, and yes to stepping up into whatever is next for you.

Stepping up is a choice. And it’s not always a choice that we feel ready or equipped for. It demands honesty, commitment and courage.

In this week’s solo episode we look back at my conversation with Sarah Day, CEO of Practice Solutions and our first sponsor for this show. As we consider Sarah’s experience of stepping up, and really embracing her leadership role as a Chief Executive, we see how owning who we are can give us the confidence to say yes on a daily basis.  We also take a brief look at Shonda Rhimes’ experience of saying yes for a whole year and how that changed – and saved – her life.

It’s a small word, with a life changing impact. If you know it’s time to say yes and step up into whatever is next in YOUR mission, take a listen now.

07 Jan 2023#076: Looking back on “Resilience: How Much is Too Much?” with Rachel Flower00:17:15

How much resilience does one person need is an interesting reframe on the oft asked question, how much can one person take.  When you have survived some of the toughest times as a loving human; challenged inequity in and through the legal system, and taken on politicians on major issues of injustice during a global pandemic, you might be forgiven for taking a well earned rest or pivoting into a less fraught career for your next life chapter.

In last week’s interview (#075) I talked to business coach and legal consultant, Rachel Flower about her multiple missions to rectify injustice, advocate for the underdog and tackle issues of equality and diversity. We learned how, in building resilience, Rachel looks for the gift in the hard times and carries her learning into the next opportunity to make a difference and become an even better version of yourself.

Looking back on our conversation, in this week’s episode I reflect on the importance of disrupting our thinking in challenging times and having strategies in place to build our mental resilience.

If you’re a woman on a mission who is looking to feel more resilient in times of challenge or uncertainty,  this week’s Insights episode is for you.

04 Nov 2021Episode 13: Live What You LOVE! with Ann Skinner00:43:44

Stepping into the unknown can be the hardest part of your mission, particularly when your calling is so compelling that you can't not respond. Ann’s journey as a heart-worker involves so much more than the beautiful doodles she is known for. In this episode, she shares the challenges of being heart-led and the literal ups and downs of living life on many levels.

ABOUT MY GUEST: ANN SKINNER

Ann Skinner, aka Ann The Heartworker, is a coach and creative, helping you open your heart and live a life with more compassion, creativity and courage. She is the founder of The Heartworker’s Way and the creator of Annie and Eva.

Apart from her work as a life coach and teacher, Ann also works as a doodle artist and visual storyteller. She is the published author/illustrator of The Art of Contribution and Annie and Eva Love Devon.

Although Ann has worked as a change facilitator since 2007, she only found her creative powers by accident in 2016. It was the missing link that helped her realign to her heart centre and revolutionised her life and work. Ann now combines her superpowers as a coach and creative through a unique process called The Heartworker’s Way. The process shares both her wisdom and passion for doodling as a heart and mind expanding creative tool for wellbeing, empowerment and growth.

Ann has worked with people from all over the world. Her clients are caring and generous souls who have often spent their lives being there for others, but have forgotten to extend that courtesy to themselves, resulting in feeling depleted and lost. Ann’s work offers a creative and loving space for her clients to heal and come home to themselves, helping them create sustainable change, from the inside out.

02 Feb 2023#079: Being Fulfilled - The Season Five Heartbeats00:28:13

Looking back on Season Five, and reflecting on the stories and experiences shared by each of my guests, the word that stands out this season is fulfilment. Our external search for ‘more’ and our internal search for meaning.

Whether it’s a quest to give and be more so that we can be the difference that matters for others, or a deep personal need to achieve our own potential, there really is something for everyone in this season:

As I look back over the season, there really was something for every woman on a mission:

  • Olukemi Ogunyemi on anti-racism: working together to challenge racism and build a better world for future generations (Ep 65 & 66)
  • Heather Anstey-Myers on getting what you settle for and/or leading a more fulfilling life (Ep 67 & 68)
  • Honor Wilson-Fletcher MBE on getting comfortable with discomfort and owning your own space (Ep 69 & 70)
  • Kathryn Billing on the search for fulfilment in life and leadership and realising our full potential in order to live our best life (Ep 71 & 72)
  • Andrea Byrne on infertility: the challenge of normalising conversation around taboo topics and taking time to be quiet too (Ep 73 & 74)
  • Rachel Flower on resilience: how much one person can take and the importance of strategies to support mental resilience (Ep 75 & 76)
  • Sherry Bevan on imposter syndrome and self doubt and what would be possible if you weren’t holding yourself back (Ep 77 & 78)

In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and BE more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.  Whether you are short on time, new to the podcast, or would simply enjoy a recap on the rich learning we have heard from each guest, this summary of Season Five is for you!

04 Feb 2022Episode 27: Mission Over Money with Tara Newman00:45:17

If there’s one thing that catches everyone’s attention, it’s our level of ease and willingness (or otherwise!) to talk about money. For many women it’s a real struggle and yet, when we truly understand our relationship with money, so much more becomes possible for us in our life, our business and our mission.

Tara was at rock bottom. Running her small business had led to bankruptcy. For Tara to survive, she had to have the courage to own her own genius whether she liked it or not. And in owning her genius she learned how to put mission over money so that she could help women to transform from feeling fearful into being financial powerhouses.

Tara’s story is a journey of personal transformation. Of believing that when we bring our confidence, expertise and strengths together, our mission will emerge and bloom. Of being willing to change her beliefs around money. Of giving herself permission to love money.

A journey of trust, that when we put mission first, the money will follow.

ABOUT MY GUEST: TARA NEWMAN

Tara is the founder and CEO of the Bold Profit Academy where she teaches service-based business owners how to sell premium services and programmes without the emotional stress of launching, worrying about ad, overwhelming social strategies or complex funnels. Tara hosts a weekly podcast called the Bold Money Revolution and has been featured in publications like Money Magazine, Yahoo Finance and Huffington Post as well as other publications and podcasts.

She earned her Master’s in Organisational Psychology from Hofstra University, has over 20 years experience, is a certified Profit First Professional and holds an advanced level Reiki certification. Everything she teaches incorporates Energy, Mindset and Strategy as a framework for resilience and results.

03 Sep 2022#059 Leading Change in Social Care with Ali Bulman00:56:37

Delivering the re-set and recovery of adult social care services, as a result of a global pandemic, is far from being a one-woman mission. But for a woman who understands the value of creating a team, knows how to get the best out of them and isn’t afraid to surround herself with people who bring different strengths to her own, nothing is insurmountable.

Ali is on a mission to lead that recovery in Cornwall, while continuing her life-long personal mission to overcome the variety of challenges and obstacles that get in the way of delivering quality services for local residents.  And for Ali, it really is personal.

In this deeply honest conversation,  Ali Bulman shares how her journey of leadership started with volunteering, becoming part of a bigger family and finding joy in enabling independence. She has spent her career developing an understanding of the ‘beautifully complex’ and learning what really matters to the people she is there to serve.

Determined to deliver the very best she can, for those who are often the most vulnerable in society, Ali is the recently appointed Strategic Director for Care and Wellbeing in Cornwall Council. Her mission is guided by a strong sense of who she is (and isn’t!) and her personal commitment to being a leader who remains true to the people around her and her own deepest values.

This episode is for anyone who wants to learn more about the sweetspot in leadership where you can be the very best you can be - without compromising your own values & beliefs, and identity or purpose, OR the needs of those you are here to serve.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: ALI BULMAN (FULL BIO ON PODPAGE)

Ali is the Strategic Director for Care and Wellbeing in Cornwall Council and the first public sector leader to join me on the show.

Ali
is on a mission to recover and re-set Adult Social Care services in Cornwall, while continuing her overall career mission to overcome the challenges and obstacles that get in the way of delivering for local residents – a daily challenge for public sector leaders in general.

30 Sep 2022#063: Being Brave - The Season Four Heartbeats00:35:00

Looking back on Season Four, if there is one thing that the Women on a Mission have in common, it’s bravery. It’s easy to think that if our mission is enormous we personally need to be one million percent braver to fulfil it, but throughout these interviews we repeatedly see the value that just being a little braver can achieve.

Especially if those around us choose to be a little braver too!

As I look back over the season, there really was something for everyone:

  • Caroline Strawson on realising that no-one is coming and breaking free from hidden shame (Ep 49 & 50)
  • Vivienne Porritt OBE on how being even 10% braver can create significant change and increase your impact (Ep 51 & 52)
  • Alisoun Mackenzie on getting off the train of expectation and living a meaningful life (Ep 53 & 54)
  • Dr Emma Yhnell on challenging traditional perspectives and creating meaningful connection (Ep 55 & 56)
  • Jane Duncan Rogers on making difficult conversations easier and surrendering to our calling (Ep 57 & 58)
  • Ali Bulman on the recovery of adult social care (post pandemic) and the real role of leaders in making an impact for the most vulnerable in society (Ep 59 & 60)
  • Jess Baker on being a super-helper and the personal impact when you can’t stop helping (Ep 61 & 62)
  • Sue Revell (that’s me!) on not just fitting in when you should be standing out! (Bonus Ep 1-3)

In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and BE more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.  Whether you are short on time, new to the podcast, or would simply enjoy a recap on the rich learning we have heard from each guest, this summary of Season Four is for you!

And if you need any additional incentive to listen, this episode also announces the PRIZEWINNERS for our first birthday giveaway in September 2022. What a fantastic way to round out the season and also to celebrate International Podcast Day!

24 Jun 2022#049: I Had The Key All Along with Caroline Strawson00:59:00

Hitting rock bottom was the point where everything changed for Caroline Strawson. A lifetime of exhausting people-pleasing, experiencing four miscarriages, and grieving the loss of her mum, had all taken their toll.

Then, recognising she was in a psychologically abusive marriage and navigating the escalating trauma associated with her divorce from a covert narcissist - only to discover they were in crippling debt which was to lead to repossession of their family home - all resulted in Caroline experiencing anxiety, depression, complex PTSD and self harm.

Caroline’s mission began with the recognition that only she could break free from the life-long invisible cage of expectation, now compounded by her experience of grief, shame and loss.

In this inspirational conversation trauma-informed coach & therapist, Caroline Strawson, describes how realising that she alone had the key to change was the point at which her journey to healing and recovery began.

Now she helps others to overcome narcissistic abuse after completely turning her own life around.

This episode is for anyone who wants to unlock the hidden shame associated with narcissistic abuse, or understand how to deal with internal conflict in a way that helps you get unstuck and move forward.

22 Jul 2022#053 Let It Go! with Alisoun Mackenzie00:50:37

Finding who we really are is often described as a journey and for Alisoun Mackenzie the voyage of discovery quite literally began when she was backpacking around the world, yet not in the way you might expect.

Alisoun is on a mission to help women enjoy a happier, more meaningful life that lights up their heart and makes a difference in a way that they are proud of. Her own personal search for meaning started with getting off a train.

The train of expectation.

Understanding, accepting and owning her mission has repeatedly required Alisoun to let go of expectation: both her own expectations of herself and the expectations of others.

In this inspirational yet intimate conversation, meaningful life guide, Alisoun Mackenzie, describes how letting go and surrendering to the process of life has inspired and created incredible opportunities to serve, undertaking humanitarian work with young genocide survivors in Rwanda, and leading teams of women who sponsor earthquake-resistant schools made of recycled plastic in Asia.

Having explored her own quest for meaning, Alisoun now helps other women to live a more meaningful life that leaves a legacy.

This episode is for anyone who is seeking more meaning in life and wants to learn more about living a life that is aligned to their personal truth.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: ALISOUN MACKENZIE

Alisoun Mackenzie is on a mission to improve the lives of 100,000+ people by making it easy for women to enjoy a happy meaningful life that lights up their heart and makes a difference they’re proud of. 23 Dec 2021Episode 21: It's Not About You! with Suzanne Dibble00:52:46

When Suzanne was reading Richard Branson’s books at 18 years of age, neither of them could have had any idea of the personal impact he would later have in her career. She went on to have first-hand experience of working with the entrepreneurial giant whose own mission personally inspired Suzanne to help small business owners to have access to affordable legal protection.

This episode is all about the ripples of impact that come from being the best we can be in our mission, often without ever truly knowing the full impact we have had. In those moments where we're most tempted to make it all about us, true success lies in realising it was never about us at all, and all about the people we're here to serve.

15 Jul 2022#052 Looking back on "Being 10% Braver" with Vivienne Porritt OBE00:15:09

What would be possible in your mission, if you were just 10% braver? How would that influence the scale of your dream, the scape of your thinking, or the scope of who you are being as you lead your mission forward?

Imagine the difference that could make.

For Vivienne Porritt, that moment came as part of the evolution of WomenEd. The recognition of the difference when one person is 10% braver, AND the compound impact of the whole community of women choosing to be 10% braver too.

Looking back on our conversation, I reflect on what we can learn from Vivienne’s experience of being 10% braver: from creating a fairer and equitable experience of education for every child to feel valued, through to exposing the inequities experienced by women in education so that women leaders can maximise their fullest potential in creating the best possible outcomes for children, from nursey to university.

If you’re ready to be 10% braver in how you show up in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

24 May 2023#095: Being Free - The Season Six Heartbeats00:22:48

Looking back on Season Six, and reflecting on the stories and experiences shared by each of my guests, the word that stands out this season is FREEDOM!

With so many experiences being described by my guests, we heard how freedom was a gift, a release, a discovery and a quest.

Whatever freedom might mean for you, there really is something for everyone in this season.

Here’s a quick reminder of our conversations:

  • Lou Featherstone on life as a positivity rebel: finding your own voice and discovering true inner confidence (Ep 81 & 82)
  • Natalie Balmain on wanting to be Prime Minister and building confidence from the inside-out (Ep 83 & 84)
  • Veronica Pullen on finding the unique gift inside ourselves and the importance of doing the inner work required to lead our mission (Ep 85 & 86)
  • Kate Flounders on who helps the helpers who support the most vulnerable and being a free-range human (Ep 87 & 88)
  • Dara Goldberg on eradicating ageism in the beauty industry and embracing the gift in a midlife mission (Ep 89 & 90)
  • Janey Lee Grace on tackling the white elephant, quitting the booze and living the holistic best life of your choice (Ep 91 & 92)
  • Frances Beecher on leading in the third sector to eradicate homelessness and the cost of being an all-in leader (Ep 93 & 94)

In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and BE more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.

Whether you are short on time, new to the podcast, or would simply enjoy a recap on the rich learning we have heard from each guest, this summary of Season Six is for you!

22 Oct 2022#066: Looking back on “Anti-Racism: A Together Agenda” with Olukemi Ogunyemi00:19:46

What is grace? And how would showing more grace toward each other create a better world for future generations?

In last week’s interview (#065), body therapist and author Olukemi Ogunyemi shared the story of her upbringing in Scotland as a mixed-race child: highlighting both the trauma of experiencing racial abuse and the responsibilities of individuals, communities and organisations to raise awareness of racism, create impactful change and build a better future.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by reflecting honestly on my own early journey of awakening in relation to privilege in general, and anti-racism in particular. I then look at what we can learn from Olukemi’s personal approach to tackling racism through compassion, and begin to explore the meaning of grace as a spiritual gift or human virtue.

If you’re looking to deepen your understanding of who you are being in your mission, or you are looking to commit more deeply to being the difference you want to see in the world, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

11 Nov 2022#069: Taking Up Your Own Space with Honor Wilson-Fletcher MBE00:57:36

Imagine being the Chief Executive of an organisation that exists to take young explorers to extraordinary destinations - in the world AND in their own lives. Where the very raison d’être is to explore possibility, take young people out of their comfort zone and change their lives for the better.  What an opportunity to make a difference!

An opportunity made all the more exceptional when you’re a woman, leading in a highly male-dominated sector, and the first female CEO in the 90 year history of the organisation.

Honor Wilson-Fletcher is a servant leader, driven by her mission. A mission of fairness.  Fairness in the workplace. Fairness for girls and women. And fairness of opportunity to know who you really are.

Her story begins on a farm in Dorset, trying to make sense of life as an unhappy child grappling with mixed expectations.  In this deeply personal conversation,  Honor shares how her exploration to find who she really is began with a move to London, becoming self-sufficient, and learning to see the world through the eyes of those who saw possibility very differently to her own experience.

Her raging determination to find places that were fair drove her ambition to take up her space in the world and become the boss, so that she could shape the future and create fairness of opportunity for herself and others.

This episode is for anyone who would like to find their voice, get more comfortable with discomfort, and own their own space in the world.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: HONOR WILSON-FLETCHER MBE

Honor Wilson-Fletcher MBE is the Chief Executive of the British Exploring Society. Her previous leadership roles, working with young people, included six years as CEO of schools’ charity the Aldridge Foundation and two years at the National Literacy Trust, where she worked on behalf of the Department for Education as Director of the 2008 National Year of Reading.  She has also held transformational roles as a Director at Southbank Centre and the British Museum, and has a background in PR & publishing - working for Waterstones, Transworld, Hodder Children’s Books, Penguin and BOL.com. She has served on charitable boards and as a school governor since her twenties, including the National Literacy Trust, Edinburgh International Literature Festival, Arts Council England, Catch-22 and Enabling Enterprise.  She is currently an Advisor to SkillsBuilder.

Taking on the beauty industry is no mean feat. But what else can you do when every product and purchase you consider carries a marketing message that you disagree with, with every fibre of who you are?

Based in Philadelphia, this week’s guest is the founder of the Endless Beauty Collective.  Dara Goldberg is fiercely proud to be a woman in midlife and she is on a mission to eradicate ageism in the beauty industry. She is a champion and advocate for women taking their power back and making a noise so loud that they have to be heard!

14 Jul 2023#101: Mission Me! with Kym Vincenti00:40:23

Fearing ridicule. Falling through the cracks for help. Letting the bullies win. When learning to be resourceful is your only path to surviving the unusual and unconventional life you’ve been born into, it can take a lifetime to slow down enough to breathe.

Kym Vincenti was a born extrovert, living in the introvert shell she had created for safety. She describes how slowing everything down and launching ‘Mission Me’, has been an awkward and difficult journey of self-discovery, learning the power of self-acceptance in order to be her own champion, from the inside-out.

Kym describes herself as a master juggler, forging a path in the music industry at 60 years of age, while also continuing to fuse her love of holistic well-being with her love of writing.

This episode is for women who are on a journey to learn who they really are and become the person they were born to be.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: KYM VINCENTI

Like many women, Kym Vincenti has become a master juggler over the years. This is a skill she now puts to good use in forging a path ahead in the music industry, at 60 years of age, while maintaining her passion for health & wellness and, keeping her hand in as a writer.

Launching her music career just last August, she has already had two number 1's in the iTunes Blues Charts and has become a prolific songwriter. Meanwhile, in the background, she has been combining her love of holistic well-being with her love of writing and her next book, '50 Shades of Health & Wellness' For Women Over 50, is due out later this year.

With her unconventional and rather dysfunctional background, Kym says the thing she is most proud of is surviving and thriving in this world and her mission now, is to pay all those lessons forward to help other women gain better mental, physical and spiritual health.

Kym’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page

08 Apr 2022Episode 37: If Not Now, When? with Karen Haller01:05:48
Putting your head above the parapet isn’t an easy to thing to do. Especially if, despite your very best efforts, you’re not getting any traction.  Imagine trying to start your new career, in a subject area that no-one really understands, and then a global recession hits. Many of us would have given up. Even her chosen mentors told her it was time to give in and get a job. But instead of giving up, Karen Haller dug in even deeper. It was more than just following her heart, Karen committed to doing the deep, personal, inner work that enabled her to keep going.

Such was the strength of her personal belief in her mission, that she spent eight years allowing herself to fall forward. Doing the inner work that enabled her to find the resilience and determination to keep believing when no-one else believed what she knew to be true.

Every knock back pushed Karen to do more and be better.

Every heckle pushed her to hone her message more distinctly.

Every tear made her push harder through frustration.

Every no helped her find her inner YES!

Karen Haller went on to become the leading global expert in the field of Behavioural Design & Colour Psychology with a book translated into 14 languages (so far!). In this week’s episode she shares how she went from sheer terror of public speaking to now being an internationally renowned keynote speaker.  Her story is an inspiration to anyone who has ever been tempted to walk away, inviting us instead to walk the road less travelled and do the deep inner work that builds resilience, determination and commitment in answering our calling.

29 Dec 2021BONUS EPISODE: Your Mission Matters with Sue Revell00:20:40
Your mission demands your boldest, bravest, most brilliant self.  How ready are you?

Whether you see it as a mission, or a calling, or simply that thing you “can’t NOT do”, right now it requires you to think, dream and play your biggest game.

Your Mission Matters is my free guide to help you self-evaluate where you are and where you want to be in your mission.  More importantly, it helps you to plan how you’re going to get there so that you can boldly and bravely lead the change you want to make, in your career, your profession, your business or in the wider world.

It’s time to STOP thinking, dreaming and playing small. Listen to this episode (and/or download the written version of Your Mission Matters) and let me take you through some key questions to explore how to move your mission forward and how to become the person you need to be to deliver your mission.

It’s up to you whether you undertake the review as a new year evaluation and/or goal setting exercise or whether you work through it at regular points throughout the year to check in on your progress. The process works equally well for either purpose.

Download your free copy of the Your Mission Matters guide HERE. You can either complete the template I've created or use the questions as prompts for your own journal.  In the downloadable version, you will find an extra chapter on how to create detailed outcomes to maximise your success in 2022 and a special offer for January!

29 Jul 2022#054 Looking back on "Let It Go!" with Alisoun Mackenzie00:14:12

If you could let go of one expectation, right now, what would it be? Would it be an expectation of yourself, or of other people? Or maybe you would let go of something you know others expect of you?

Imagine the difference that freedom, that you would create, would make in your mission.

For Alisoun Mackenzie, that moment came when she got off the train of expectation and began to explore who she really was.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by reflecting on the personal impact of discovering a deeply personal shared experience, and how I resisted the temptation to edit out how it made me feel! I then look at what we can learn from Alisoun’s story of letting go and how, when we let go of everything we think we know, we learn more than we ever thought possible about who we really are.

If you’re ready to let go and surrender to the process of life, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

As questions go, it’s quite a biggie…. and it’s a hard question to ask ourselves without creating thoughts of expectation, enoughness, maybe even FOMO, if we’re not immediately sure of the answer. In this episode, Catherine Watkin – one of my earliest mentors since setting up in business - begins by asking herself this very searching question, and then takes us on an honest and insightful exploration of the various missions she has pursued in her career. If you’ve ever wondered if you’re really changing the world, this episode is for you.

What do you do when you have a deep calling to make a difference, and you’re feeling all the feels, but actually creating change feels completely overwhelming and you don’t know where to start?

19 Aug 2022#057 Who Moved The Comfort Zone? with Jane Duncan Rogers00:40:58

If the only certainty in life is death, why are we so reluctant to talk about it? Whether it’s fear of illness or the unknown, unwillingness to discuss what may be seen as morbid or macabre, or avoidance of confronting our own mortality, death remains a taboo subject for many people.

Jane is on a mission to make end of life planning as commonplace as birth plans. As you will hear, she is determined to help us feel more at ease talking about death, dying and grief. And, as she talks, she models beautifully the very lightness which Jane believes makes these difficult conversations easier.

In this deeply personal conversation, Jane Duncan Rogers shares how her mission began when her husband died. She describes how a friend urged and nudged them to have *that* all important conversation before it was too late and shares how positive the impact can be when an end of life plan is created.

Committed to helping us do death well, Jane is now running a Social Enterprise to support the teaching and facilitation of end of life planning. At every twist and turn, her mission has remained the thing she can’t NOT do, and she hasn’t seen the inside of her comfort zone since the day it all began.

This episode is for anyone who wants to learn more about how to approach end of life planning and how to start difficult conversations with those you love. It’s also for anyone who wants to know how to leave their comfort zone behind!

29 Oct 2021Episode 12: Looking back on "Female Founders: fears, feats & fulfilment" with Aimee Bateman (Insights)00:13:57

If you’ve ever judged yourself, maybe for being too much or not enough or simply just for being you, you’ll know the prison that contained female tech founder, Aimee Bateman, until she decided to break free.

This week’s Insights episode looks back on our conversation (Episode 11) and suggests how, in setting ourselves free, we can become the person we know we were born to be.

06 Sep 2022BONUS EPISODE: I'm Not Freakin' Small! with Sue Revell and Guest Host, Aimee Bateman00:57:34

You asked for the story of MY mission….. so here it is. Where it started, why it’s important, what I’ve learned and what (and who!) inspires me to keep going.

It’s the first of three special episodes dedicated to celebrating the first birthday of the podcast. What a year…. and I’ll be talking about that later in the week too!

In this episode I’m usurped from my microphone, and placed firmly in the hotseat by the very wonderful Aimee Bateman. She’s one of my most inspiring role models and, as my guest host, she’s very much in charge and not afraid to delve a bit deeper when the hot seat gets a bit toasty!

We also launch our birthday giveaway.  Lots of amazing prizes to celebrate reaching the end of our first year – no mean feat as any podcaster will tell you.  Do join in!  All the details will be in the show notes of this episode – go to this episode for more information.

I hope that my story inspires you in your mission too. Look out for the next special - an Insights episode tomorrow - to see what I learned from this conversation with Aimee.

03 Dec 2021Episode 18: Looking back on "Am I a Woman on a Mission" with Catherine Watkin (Insights)00:12:38

If “I am..” are two of the most powerful words we can use, then perhaps it's reasonable to assume that “Am I..?” is one of the most powerful questions we can pose. We often talk about the importance of mindset, but if we really want to change the world there are two even deeper levels we have to explore, and the first of these is the question of our identity. Knowing who we are and who we need to be to fulfil our calling.

In this solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Catherine Watkin and begin to explore what it takes to say Hell Yes, I’m a Woman on a Mission!

21 Nov 2021Episode 15: Being True - The Season One Heartbeats00:27:33

If there's one thing the Women on a Mission in Season One have in common, it's that 'the thing they can't not do' involves being true to who they are.  Each guest revealed their own unique perspective and experience of being a woman on a mission, and almost without exception talked of the importance of speaking truth, being authentic, and being true to the calling of your heart.

As I look back over the season, there really was something for everyone:

  • Alison Jones on leadership and deciding to lead;
  • Dr Karen Darke MBE on finding our inner gold;
  • Julie Owen-Moylan on not needing permission from our inner committee;
  • Allison Crow on why more isn't better;
  • Helen Bullen on cutting out the noise;
  • Aimee Bateman on breaking free from judgement; and
  • Ann Skinner on letting our heart lead the way.

In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and be more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.

09 Dec 2022#073: Infertility: It’s Time to Talk with Andrea Byrne00:47:47

Normalising conversation about any taboo topic is a challenging mission. And when that topic is something you have deeply personal experience of, it takes the challenge to a whole new level: especially when the topic is as complex and emotionally charged as living with infertility.

It's an intense experience that changes lives and challenges relationships - with partners, family, friends and (especially) ourselves. It’s not just emotionally and physically exhausting, it can leave us questioning who we are at the deepest level of our own personal identity.

It’s not surprising that infertility can leave us feeling isolated on many levels. There is so much to make sense of, and how do you share a story that may not be yours alone to share?

Andrea has spent her professional life giving voice to other people’s stories and, as a result of her own experience navigating the world of fertility, she is on a mission to tackle the stigma and reduce the isolation associated with infertility.  A true story teller, she shares the story of her mission and how, during the period where she was simply unable to give voice to her own story, she was inspired by the people who were sharing when she couldn’t.

Andrea Byrne is one of the faces of ITV news, anchoring the BAFTA award-winning daily news programme, Wales At Six, as well as ITV’s national bulletins. Andrea also presents the current affairs programme Wales This Week and presents her own fertility podcast, Making Babies.

This episode is for anyone in need of inspiration that they just can’t find inside themselves right now, and for women who are leading change and want to feel more comfortable with sharing their own story. It’s an episode about identity, self-acceptance and self-belief.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: ANDREA BYRNE

Andrea Byrne is one of the faces of ITV news, anchoring the BAFTA award-winning daily news programme, Wales At Six, as well as ITV’s national bulletins. In addition to her news portfolio, Andrea also presents the current affairs programme Wales This Week and presents her own fertility podcast, Making Babies.

Away from the newsroom, Andrea is a keen yogi, a novice stand-up paddle boarder, and a budding novelist. She’s also married to Wales and Lions legend, Lee Byrne.

Andrea’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page.

17 Feb 2022Episode 29: Being Free To Be Me with Karen Laos00:46:52

Have you ever felt like there’s something more ahead for you but the path to get there just isn’t clear? It’s a strange kind of stuckness when you have the sense that you are meant to do more and be more but you don’t yet know what ‘more’ might be.

Karen Laos felt like a racehorse behind the gates, all fired up and ready to go but the gates just weren’t open.  The more that things expanded around her, the more constricted she felt in the place where she worked. It took almost two years for her to find her ‘more’.

And then the global pandemic struck.

Covid-19. What a time to be free!

Karen shares how she found her way to freedom so that she could answer her calling and make an even bigger impact in the world. Having escaped the prison of self-doubt and the paralysing fear of judgement that held her there, she now wants to help ten million women to achieve the same freedom.  A communications expert by profession, Karen is on a mission to empower women to find their voice, overcome self doubt and speak with confidence.

ABOUT MY GUEST: KAREN LAOS

Based in San Francisco, Karen Laos is a former corporate leader turned professional speaker specializing in communication. She is fiercely committed to equipping women in business to speak with clarity and stand out with unshakable confidence.

Over her 20+ year career, she has gained rave reviews from clients such as NASA, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Sephora, AT&T, Levi’s and United Healthcare.

She got her start in human resources at Gap Inc and then found her passion for corporate training at Decker Communications, where she led a team of facilitators and traveled the globe consulting professionals on their communication skills. After 14 years, she left Decker to pursue her entrepreneurial dream (and hasn’t looked back!).

Her mission is to eradicate self-doubt so women can stop holding back and start taking their seat at the table. One of the ways she does this is through her podcast: Ignite Your Confidence with Karen Laos.

11 Mar 2022Episode 33: Is It Time To Step Up? with Sarah Day00:50:26

Helping others to be more and be better is something that comes naturally to Sarah Day. If mission is the thing we can’t not do, then Sarah was quite literally born to her mission. She has spent a lifetime surrounded by people who understand that by giving of ourselves we can help others to thrive too.

But that doesn’t mean it was easy, when it was Sarah’s turn to step up. On the one hand, she knew herself to be a natural leader but it still took a pandemic for Sarah to step fully into her leadership role and realise she is ‘enough’.

She was more than enough.

Sarah shares what it is to make a decision to step up and lead. And to lead in a way that consolidates rather than compromises the creative values she has stayed true to throughout her career. A quietly inspirational leader, Sarah puts people at the heart of all that she and her team deliver, ensuring each voice is heard and valued and everyone is encouraged to be the best we can be.

If you’re thinking of starting a podcast, or launching any content that will draw you out of your comfort zone, this third episode in the birthday bonus trilogy is for you!

It’s been a year of learning, that’s for sure, but maybe not in the way I expected.  If those four years of podcrastination and personal resistance were based on fears about technology, the real learning is much more personal – as a coach, as a business owner, and as a fellow woman on a mission.

This is the third of three episodes this week where I answer the questions that listeners have been curious about – my background, my mission, and now the podcast itself.

If you’re curious about podcasting or just wondering if I’d do it all again….. take a listen!

29 Apr 2022Episode 40: Looking back on "Done With Hiding!" with Monique DeBose00:20:16

Stepping out of the shadows can be a scary thing to do, particularly when you’ve spent a lifetime playing things safe. Whether it’s playing small to protect ourselves, or dimming our light to make other people feel more comfortable around us, there are many ways in which we learn to contain what we think, what we say and what we do.

And when the moment comes to step into our mission it can feel completely overwhelming to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight, even though we know it’s what we were born to do.

In this week’s episode we look back at my conversation with Monique DeBose, award-winning jazz singer, songwriter, playwright, diversity consultant and spiritual coach. As we listened to the many contexts in which women hold themselves back, we also witnessed what it is to experience that change in power and energy when we own who we truly are, and become unapologetic for sharing that with the world.

This Insights episode is all about the dance with resistance that we experience whenever we are ready to take the next step up in our life and leadership. Understanding our own experience of this deeply personal part of us that exists to keep us safe, so that we can work with it to help us soar.

If you’re ready to step into your own spotlight, take a listen.

14 Jan 2022Episode 24: Looking back on I’m Not Done! with Dr Maggie Landes MD (Insights)00:15:39

Have you ever had a moment where you realised that you’re not ‘done’?  Where you felt deeply aware that what you are doing just isn’t enough and that there is something else you are here to achieve?

That you have more to do and more to BE?

There’s something really powerful about realising it’s time to think, dream and BE bigger in your mission. Time to show up differently. Time to stop waiting for someone or something else to come along and instead to step into the calling that you are uniquely placed to answer.

In my solo episode, we look back at my conversation with Dr Maggie Landes who, following treatment for cancer, stepped out of her comfort zone to answer her calling. She knew she had found her mission, and in sharing her story she teaches us all how we can learn to trust our dreams more than our fears.

If you’re ready to be more, but you’re wondering where to start, take a listen.

16 May 2023#094: Looking back on: Can We Care Too Much As Leaders? with Frances Beecher00:19:24

What does it mean to be an all-in leader? And how can we be all-in, creating positive impact and influence, while also looking after ourselves, those we lead, and those we serve?

In last week’s interview (#093) I talked to Frances Beecher, CEO of Llamau, Wales’ leading young people and women’s homeless charity. Frances can’t NOT care and it’s a conversation about creating influence and impact, in a sector where leaders can often feel powerless.

Where are you feeling powerless to create change right now?

Looking back on our conversation, this week I consider what we can learn from Frances about creating and owning our influence, even where the formal power and responsibility to create change lies elsewhere.

If you’re a woman who wants to make more impact through your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

Have you ever been so tired of trying to explain yourself and the change you want to make, that you just want to walk away and leave it to someone else?

There are always moments in leading change where giving up feels easier than going on. Moments where the resistance is real and you just want to say, I’m done.

In this week’s episode we look back at my conversation with Karen Haller, global expert in behavioural design and colour psychology.  As we look back at how Karen persisted for 8 years, against all advice to throw in the towel, we also learn how she turned around her absolute terror of speaking in public to become an international keynote speaker. There are seven powerful lessons we can learn from Karen’s story, to help us keep going too. If you’re ready to walk the road less travelled and build your resilience, hone your determination and deepen your commitment to your calling, take a listen now.

27 May 2022Episode 44: Looking back on "Empathy: The Path to Peace" with Jo Berry00:18:10
Some stories are virtually impossible to listen to without feeling an internal response. Sometimes we wonder what it means for us. Sometimes we ponder what we, ourselves, would have done in that situation. Sometimes we dream of the action we like to think we would have taken. And sometimes we measure ourselves against the actions of the hero in the story and find we fall short.

Jo Berry’s story triggers a whole range of personal responses. Sixteen years after her father was killed by an IRA bomb, Jo first met with the man responsible, Pat Magee to understand his actions. That initial three-hour meeting led to them speaking on over three hundred occasions, on a shared platform around the world.

Looking back on my conversation with Jo, I reflect on four themes that are written through her story like words through a stick of rock. Curiosity, Empathy, Forgiveness and Peace.

If you’re ready to make your dream bigger than your fears or you want to improve your relationship with yourself or with others, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

24 Jan 2023#078: Looking back on "I'd Never Felt Like An Imposter" with Sherry Bevan00:22:13

What’s the difference between self doubt and full blown imposter syndrome, and why does it matter?  If you’ve ever experienced thoughts or feelings that make you feel like a fraud, you’ll know how much even a little self-doubt can hold you back.

And when you’ve got a big mission to fulfil, the last thing you need is your mental monkeys running amok, asking who DO you think you are to do this!

In last week’s interview (#077) I talked to leadership consultant and coach, Sherry Bevan, about her mission to get more women into leadership roles in the technology sector. We talked about the power of authenticity and the difference it makes when you use different strategies to manage those moments where you feel really challenged in your mission.

Looking back on our conversation, in this week’s episode I take the opportunity to learn more about imposter syndrome and how it affects us when our experience is more persistent and intense than everyday self-doubt.  You’ll also hear 3 important questions that can help us disrupt the thinking that holds us back when doubt creeps in.

If you’re a woman on a mission who is tired of doubting yourself and holding back from being all that you can be, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

17 Jun 2022#047: Being Bold - The Season Three Heartbeats00:19:24

The bigger our mission, the greater our fears.  The higher we perceive the next step up to be, the deeper the level of resistance that we feel… and we heard a lot about stepping up in Season Three. The more we talked about achieving success in our mission, the more we heard about the importance of making (and keeping!) our mission bigger than our fears. While the eclectic mix of stories make this a tricky season to summarise in a couple of words, there’s definitely a boldness that comes with dreaming, thinking and being bigger in our mission.

As I look back over the season, there really was something for everyone:

  • Sarah Day on saying yes and stepping up (Ep 33 & 34)
  • Dr Bnar Talabani on making our vision bigger than our fear of failure (Ep 35 & 36)
  • Karen Haller on walking the road less travelled and not giving in (Ep 37 & 38)
  • Monique DeBose on coming out of hiding and stepping into your glorious power (Ep 39 & 40)
  • Penny Power on leading in a lonely world and *always* making business personal (Ep 41 & 42)
  • Jo Berry on creating peace & harmony out of conflict and adversity (Ep 43 & 44); and
  • Susan Payton on the power of placing your personal story at the very heart of your mission (Ep 45 & 46)

In the sharing of our stories and experiences, we encourage other women on a mission to do and BE more when all is going well, and we inspire others in those moments where we simply need to keep going too.

04 Nov 2022#068: Looking back on “You Get What You Settle For!” with Heather Anstey-Myers00:16:32

What does it mean to settle? And how do we navigate our way out of stuckness in order to live and lead a life with more impact and greater fulfilment?

In last week’s interview (#067) I talked to Chief Executive of Manufacturing Wales, and Business News Wales, Heather Anstey-Myers. During our conversation she shared her personal story of navigating a challenging childhood, and how a throwaway phrase from Thelma & Louise significantly impacted the beliefs and values that were to drive the next 30 years as her leadership career unfolded.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by considering what it really means to compromise living our best lives, by settling for less than we deserve. I then look at the importance of values-based leadership if we are to find fulfilment in our mission.

If you’re looking to create more personal impact and experience a deeper level of fulfilment in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

13 May 2022Episode 42: Looking back on "Leading in a Lonely World" with Penny Power OBE00:16:23
Do you ever feel alone in your mission to make the world a better place? Hungering after something better can be a lonely place to live whether you’re at the beginning or in the messy middle of your mission.

Maybe you’re actually surrounded by people, but something deep inside you wants something more, or different, to those around you.

Maybe you’ve made the big leap into something different but aren’t yet sure how to attract the people who will hold the vision for you, and with you, while you work out next steps.

Maybe you’re finding it really lonely ‘at the top’ now you’re the leader and there are thoughts and things you can no longer share.

In this week’s episode we look back at my conversation with Penny Power OBE: entrepreneur, public speaker, author and community builder. As we listened to Penny’s varied experiences of loneliness and loss throughout her life and career, we also learned how those same experiences have driven her to build and serve thriving communities.

This Insights episode reflects on life being a contact sport and considers how, when we create alignment with ourselves, others and the greater good, we are never really alone.

Leading in a lonely world is about connection, community and contribution.

Take a listen!

24 Apr 2023#091: What's Keeping You Stuck? with Janey Lee Grace00:48:38

What stands between you and your best life? For Janey, the elephant in the room was alcohol and finding how to quit the booze was the missing link in finding her purpose and living her best life.

This week’s guest is the well known author, speaker and former BBC radio presenter, Janey Lee Grace. Founder of The Sober Club, Janey once thought that the idea of a holistic best life was something that other people lived.

Listen in to find out how discovering the way to live authentically and be comfortable in her own skin has given her another chance at life – a life in which she is now fully present.

This episode is for women who need a little inspiration to take responsibility, own their power and be their imperfectly natural best self.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: JANEY LEE GRACE

Janey Lee Grace is a best-selling author and speaker, and was co-presenter on the UK’s biggest radio show, Steve Wright in the Afternoon for 24 years! Founder of The Sober Club, Janey is passionate about encouraging people to ditch the chemicals, focus on great nutrition, selfcare, and finding their purpose as she found for herself that quitting the booze was the missing link in the ‘holistic living’ picture.

Janey’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page.

10 Jun 2022#046: Looking back on "The Power of Your Story" with Susan Payton00:14:08
Do you hold back from sharing your story because you don’t think anyone will be interested?

Maybe you know you have a compelling story, but you don’t know how best to put it into words?

Having confronted the realisation that nothing was working, Susan Payton completely transformed her business, and her life, by simply sharing her story. People who had been in her community for months, without engaging, began to connect. That connection built trust and as the trust grew so did Susan’s business. Within days she had more paying clients than in the previous six months.

Looking back on our conversation, I reflect on three areas of learning: the power of the sweet spot in creating connection; the freedom that comes with BE-ing who you were born to be and the importance of putting you at the very heart of your mission.

If you’re looking for confidence and clarity in who you need to be to succeed in your mission, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

25 Nov 2022#071: Learning to Live My Best Life with Kathryn Billing01:02:40

When you’re truly brought up to believe that women can do anything, anything really is possible – including becoming the Chief Fire Officer. Driven by a heart for service, a love of community, and a deep desire to make a difference, Kathryn built a varied and interesting career, until her pursuit of improvement led her to discover that not all women in the fire service shared the same experience. Something had to change, and she shares her story of stepping up and confronting institutional sexism and committing to being part of the solution.

There were further challenges ahead. Making a difference and serving others had been the cornerstone of Kathryn’s career, but it was embarking on the journey of self-discovery that opened her eyes to the most important impact she had yet to make… finding how to make the shift from living her life in service of others, to loving herself enough to live her own best life.

Kathryn Billing is the Chief Fire Officer in Cornwall Fire and Rescue.  She’s a high performing woman with a heart for service and community, blending ambition & achievement with a deep desire to really make a difference, while having fun along the way.

This episode is for women who are leading change and want to learn more about leading others and themselves. It’s an episode about identity, self-acceptance and self-belief.

05 May 2022Episode 41: Leading in a Lonely World with Penny Power OBE00:58:33

We don’t often talk about loneliness, and especially not in business. Yet for Penny Power OBE it has been the driving force in her mission to reduce loneliness in business by building and serving impactful business communities. Penny has personal experience of loneliness at various stages in her life. In childhood, as the child who didn’t fit in. As a stay at home mum. As an employee, as a sole trader, and as a business owner. Together with her husband Thomas, she built Ecademy, the first social network for business people, with a community of 650,000 members and yet she still suspects she was the loneliest person in the community.

In this powerful conversation, Penny describes her experience as an entrepreneur, public speaker, author and community builder. She shares openly and vulnerably about not only experiencing huge business success but also the story of her personal and professional recovery - having been broken, in 2011, by the loss of her business and community.

For Penny, making business personal means bringing all of who we are, with courage and confidence, into our service of others. If you’ve ever been tempted to think ‘it’s just business’, this episode is for you.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: PENNY POWER OBE

Penny is an Entrepreneur, Public Speaker, Author and Community Builder. She is the mother of 3 adult children and has been married to Thomas Power for 31 years.

Penny passionately believes in ‘community-led business growth’ and her belief, in business, has always been highly personal. Her latest book “Business is Personal” helps thousands of business owners to find their success and happiness in business.

Business Loneliness is a mental challenge that impacts the financial results for many, Penny focuses on this aspect of mental support through building and serving business communities.

Penny was awarded her OBE by the Queen in 2014 for her ‘contribution to entrepreneurs in the Digital Economy’, citing the work she and her husband, Thomas, achieved to bring community to business owners in 1998, before LinkedIn and Facebook (who followed 4 and 6 years later). ‘Ecademy’ grew across 52 Countries with 650,000 members.  Working with business owners and their dedication to community values has been their life ever since.

10 Dec 2021Episode 19: How Do I Want To Be Remembered? with Dr Liz O'Riordan00:56:09

It’s not an easy question to confront, but for Dr Liz O’Riordan, it wasn’t optional.  Having experienced breast cancer from both sides of the operating table, and been robbed of the personal and professional future she had dedicated her whole life to creating, Liz was not only left rebuilding her physical, mental & emotional wellbeing but also her very life purpose.

Liz’s new mission is changing the landscape of cancer care by discussing the things other people don’t.  This episode is no exception!

ABOUT MY GUEST: DR LIZ O'RIORDAN

Dr Liz O’Riordan is an author, broadcaster and international speaker. In 2015 she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer whilst working as a consultant breast surgeon. She returned to work after chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy but in 2018 she had a locoregional recurrence on her chest wall. Side effects of treatment meant that she could no longer operate. She co-wrote The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer with Professor Trisha Greenhalgh and is a powerful patient advocate and is passionate about educating health care professionals about what life is really like after a cancer diagnosis. She has just  launched a podcast called Don’t Ignore The Elephant where she talks about the things no-one else talks about with patients, like sex, exercise and death.

01 Apr 2022Episode 36: Looking back on "It's ok to fail" with Dr Bnar Talabani MBE00:17:00
Is fear of failure holding you back in your mission? It’s definitely on my top ten list of things that keep world-changing women awake at night.

What if it all goes wrong?

What if it can’t be done?

What if I don’t succeed?

What if I fail in my one big thing?

There’s nothing like a game of What-Iffery to bring all your mental monkeys out to play!

In this week’s solo episode we look back at my conversation with Dr Bnar Talabani MBE: scientist, doctor, academic, child refugee, wife, mum and all round awesome human. As we look back at the impact of Bnar’s extraordinary childhood on her life and career choices, we can see how learning to deal with the fear of failure helps us to really make progress in the mission we feel called to lead.

It’s all about making different choices and creating better habits. If you know it’s time to think differently, take a listen now.

05 Jun 2023#097: Start With What You Have! with Mi Elfverson01:02:41

A mission takes confidence, bravery and maybe a little bit of crazy…such is the experience of this week’s guest. Her own little bit of crazy yielded not only the launch of her career in high-end film, TV and commercial production, but also a working visit to war-torn Bosnia with UN/IPTF peace-keeping forces.

Mi Elfverson is the founder of The Vlog Academy and creator of the EyeStorm community. She has worked with global agencies and renowned Hollywood block busters, including James Bond and Harry Potter films, and here she shares how her experience of creating extraordinary opportunities has led her to support other women to step into their power and share their expertise.

This episode is for women who feel a deep calling to serve, but aren’t quite sure where to start.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: MI ELFVERSON

Mi Elfverson is a brand photographer and business vlog expert, born in Sweden but living in the UK since 1999. After a magnificent 25 years in high-end film, TV and commercial production, Mi founded The Vlog Academy. In beginning to teach vlogging, she discovered a massive difference in confidence between men and women in front of the camera, and she soon created the EyeStorm visibility programme for women, to begin to address the imbalance.

From Stockholm to LA, New York to London, she has worked with global agencies and renowned Hollywood blockbusters, ranging from Kellogg’s and Volvo adverts to the James Bond and Harry Potter films - but nothing gives her more joy than seeing a woman step into her own power and start sharing her expertise.

Mi’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page.

07 Sep 2022BONUS EPISODE: Looking back on "I'm Not Freakin' Small!" with Sue Revell00:19:30

For many of us, standing out isn’t easy.  It’s much easier to fit in, make yourself small and blend in with the crowd. Childhood memories of “being seen by not heard” still run deep, despite also being the child who was expected to sing on the chip shop counter on Friday, and sing louder in the choir on Sunday!

Imagine then, the challenge, when your mission is to stand out. To think, dream and BE bigger so that your fears are outweighed by your life purpose, and you can’t NOT do the thing you are called to.

In yesterday’s special episode, I shared the story of my mission. And in the show today, I look back (as I do with all my guests) to see what we can learn. It starts with taking your mission seriously!

If you’re ready to make your mission bigger than your fears, this bonus Insights episode is for you.

09 Sep 2022#060 Looking back on "Leading Change in Social Care" with Ali Bulman00:15:31

If you could ask yourself one question every day that would make a real impact on those around you, what would it be?

What would be possible, for you or your team, in your business or organisation, if you stopped to ask yourself how you – as a leader - could make it easier for everyone else to do a great job?

In last week’s interview, Ali Bulman shared several examples of how she does this as she goes about her mission on a daily basis, from removing obstacles that stand in the way to empowering others to lead too.

Looking back on our conversation, I begin by reflecting on those shared experiences that we didn’t know were part of our respective career histories in health and care. I then look at what we can learn from Ali’s experience of leading teams to create meaningful change and creating the conditions where everyone can play to their strengths.

If you’re looking to be a more effective leader and build a team that really works with and around you to make a meaningful difference, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

25 Mar 2022Episode 35: It's Ok To Fail! with Dr Bnar Talabani MBE00:48:51
Bnar’s extraordinary story starts with fleeing North Iraq as a child refugee in 1998.  A child of parents who were targeted for their involvement in the Kurdish resistance, one of her early memories of arriving in the UK is her mother telling Bnar, and her siblings, that their role now was to become someone who can help others and give back. And so she did. Bnar tells the story of how she has given back throughout her career as a scientist and an academic and how, when the Covid-10 pandemic struck, she decided to do something else to support communities too. Bnar has been at the forefront of local and online efforts to dispel misinformation around vaccines, particularly for those communities where there were gaps in available information or provision of translation. Bnar worked with colleagues to form Muslim Doctors Cymru who delivered online webinars to share information with communities; the team also worked with local health boards to open vaccination centres in local mosques. Bnar quickly developed a reputation as Dr TikTok for her pioneering work with Team Halo, targeting young people via TikTok videos to dispel vaccine myths.

Bnar’s mission is a life long story of extraordinary commitment to serving others, and she is certain she has much more to do!  She shares how she is able to push through her personal resistance to be the best she can be because her vision of what else is possible is greater than the risk of failure.

And in failure, there is ALWAYS learning!

ABOUT MY GUEST: DR BNAR TALABANI MBE

Bnar arrived in the UK in 1998 as a refugee, having fled North Iraq. Her family were targeted for their involvement in the Kurdish resistance against Saddam Hussein’s regime. She graduated from Cardiff University in 2013 and is now training as a kidney and transplant doctor. She is currently completing her PhD in Immunology at Cardiff University. Bnar, is one of the founding members of Muslim Doctors Cymru, which was formed in 2020 to combat Covid-19 vaccine myths. She later joined Team Halo, a United Nations initiative to combat misinformation & has also volunteered with the British Society for Immunology to create science backed content on vaccines.

22 Apr 2022Episode 39: Done With Hiding! with Monique DeBose00:47:36

How do you come out of hiding when you’ve spent a lifetime playing small so that other people don’t feel uncomfortable in your presence?

How do you learn to own and love every part of who you are, even those parts that are hidden in shadow, buried deep inside?

And how do you create the level of self-acceptance needed to feel both safe and free within yourself, as well as with others?

Monique DeBose is a transformational entertainer, an award-winning jazz singer and playwright, a diversity consultant and a leadership coach with a Masters degree in Spiritual Psychology. For the past 20 years, she's been on a mission to help women integrate all the parts of themselves. To turn their fears and insecurities into their strength. To express themselves fully. To choose MORE for their lives.

For Monique the answers lie in allowing herself to experience the constant dance between those human feelings of resistance and fear & her spiritual journey to self-acceptance and safety deep within. We hear how, in her own inner work and in her work with clients, she uses her music, art and creativity to bypass the ‘tricky mind’ and get to the deep innate wisdom stored in our bodies throughout our many life experiences.

Most of all, we learn how and why Monique stopped protecting others, at her own expense, and stepped fully into her own glorious power, lighting the way for others to follow and integrate all the parts of themselves too.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: MONIQUE DEBOSE Monique DeBose is an award-winning singer, songwriter and spiritual coach. A leading vocal improvisationalist (having studied under Rhiannon and Joey Blake of the renowned Bobby McFerrin Voicestra), Monique has toured and entertained audiences throughout the world, performed at TEDx and spoken as part of the United Nation’s SDG Action Zones event, with the mission of helping people to transition beyond seeing in “black” and “white” so they can begin to live life in full colour.

03 Mar 2023#084: Looking back on "Self-Validation: Shifting The Dial" with Natalie Balmain00:22:58

How do you know when you’re doing a great job?  Are you someone who desperately craves feedback and approval every step of the way or are you so deeply certain of what you are doing that you wouldn’t even think to ask for someone else’s perspective?

In last week’s interview (#083) I talked to campaigner, designer and broadcaster Natalie Balmain who, last autumn, won the Channel 4 political reality show, Make Me Prime Minister. The more we discussed the woman behind the mission, the clearer it became that something deeply transformational had occurred within Natalie after she won the show, and shifting the dial on self-validation was right at the heart of the change taking place.

But how do we do that?

Looking back on our conversation, this week I consider the relationship between validation and self-confidence.  You’ll also discover how an encounter with a super-pompous dental professor completely transformed my understanding of how we can build confidence from the inside out.

If you’re a woman on a mission who would love to shift the dial on knowing when you’re doing a great job, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

03 Jun 2022#045: The Power of Your Story with Susan Payton00:56:08

There’s something potent about the power of story. Even as small children we appreciate the power and magic of being transported to another world, through even the simplest of storytelling, and yet when the story we most need to tell is our own, it can be really hard to find the words.

Susan’s mission began with doing just that. In this episode she tells how, having faced up to the painful reality that nothing was working, she completely transformed her business (and her life!) simply by finding the words and the courage to tell her own story.

In this inspirational conversation, story strategist Susan Payton describes how, having leaned into her vulnerability, she started to create powerful connections as people related to the stories she shared.

Now she helps other business owners to harness the power of their stories too.

This episode is for anyone who wants to increase their impact and communicate their message with confidence and clarity.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: SUSAN PAYTON

Susan Payton is a story strategist, copywriter, messaging geek, coach, consultant and author of The Business of Stories. Released in March 2022, the book quickly became a UK and US #1 bestseller on Amazon in several business categories, including Marketing and Sales – knocking Stephen Bartlett, star of Diary of a CEO and Dragon’s Den, off the top spot!

In a noisy world, where it’s getting harder and harder to stand out from the crowd and be heard above the noise, Susan is passionate about showing business owners how to clearly articulate their value and speak to the right people, at the right time, with a simple message and a great story.

Susan’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page and you can download your free copy of Susan’s book at: The Business of Stories.

28 Jan 2022Episode 26: Looking back on "If Not Me, Then Who?" with Emma Barnes00:15:26

If you’ve ever had a moment where you’re so completely infuriated with how things are, that you just can’t stop yourself from changing things up, you’ll immediately identify with the fury that Emma described in last week’s interview.

When it comes to stepping into our mission, there are many reasons we can feel compelled to step up and take action. Sometimes it’s because our vision is so big we can’t not move towards it. Sometimes it’s because the status quo feels so dreadful we simply have to move away from it. We find ourselves somewhere in the messiness of change, with all the personal and professional consequences that can have for everyone involved.

In this week’s solo episode, we look back at my conversation with publisher, programmer and activist Emma Barnes, who took one step at a time to change the world of publishing because she could see what would be possible if publishers learned to code. We look at the impact that had on Emma’s life and business and the influence she now has as a result of giving herself the permission she needed to begin.

If you know it’s time to trust yourself and embrace the messiness of mission, take a listen.

07 Jan 2022Episode 23: I'm Not Done! with Dr Maggie Landes00:58:34
When you shuffle off this mortal coil, what would you prefer to be remembered for?  Your restaurant choices and changing room battles, or the legacy you created to make a real difference?
Realising she wasn’t ‘done’ changed everything for Maggie Landes MD. She stepped out from the crowd and into her dis-comfort zone, where the rewards of creating an impact far outweighed the risks of doing and being something different. In this episode, she shares her conviction that every woman is influential and worthy and how, by empowering ourselves to have confidence and control of our thinking, we can joyfully and purposefully show our value to the world.

And if, as you listen, you find yourself wondering whether or not you’re done?  Chances are the answer is found in your mission and not your clothes size.  We’ll talk more about this in the Insights episode next week, but if this episode has made you think about where you are in your mission, go to suerevell.com and download a free copy of Your Mission Matters – my guide to evaluating and planning your mission.

16 Sep 2022#061 Are You a Super-Helper? with Jess Baker01:04:24

Wanting to help people has long been the driver behind many career and life choices, but what happens when you don’t know how to stop? What happens when you’re so compelled to be helpful that you can’t say ‘no’ to helping, even when helping would have a negative impact on your own needs or the needs of those closest to you?

Jess has been confident of her own mission, to help people, since she was aged 13 years old – a mission that has been reinforced at various stages of her life, culminating in her study of how and why some people cannot help but help, even when it’s to the detriment of their own wellbeing.

In this deeply personal conversation, psychologist Jess Baker shares her own story of being helped, as a teenager, to navigate what she would later realise was the impact of growing up with a parent who was experiencing narcissistic personality disorder. It’s a powerful account of how a lifetime of ‘doing the work’ has not only allowed Jess to find and accept who she really is, but has also inspired her latest mission-fuelled adventure: co-authoring The Super-Helper Syndrome: a survival guide for compassionate people, due for release later in September 2022.

This episode is for anyone who wants to know more about how to deepen their own self-awareness and sense of personal identity. It’s also for everyone who finds it hard to say no and wants to learn more about helping without detriment to their own well-being.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: JESS BAKER (FULL BIO ON PODPAGE)

Jess is a Chartered Business Psychologist, and Women’s Leadership Coach (CPsychol AFBPsS).  Her first book, The Super-Helper Syndrome: A Survival Guide for Compassionate People will be released on 29thSeptember 2022.

Jess Baker’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page.

31 Mar 2023#088: Looking back on: "Free Range Living: This Is Who I Am" with Kate Flounders00:15:35

What does it mean to be a free range human? And how can you accelerate your success by celebrating your differences and becoming even more of who you really are?

In last week’s interview (#087) I talked to Kate Flounders, founder of the Safeguarding Academy, and much of our conversation focussed on the inner work that Kate has done so that she could give herself permission to step into her power and own being who she really is.

So how do we do that?

Looking back on our conversation, this week I explore what we can learn from Kate about free range living and doing the inner work that enables us to own our voice and get our message heard.

If you’re a woman on a mission who would love to move from striving to thriving, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

22 Dec 2022#074: Looking back on "Infertility: It's Time to Talk" with Andrea Byrne00:13:44

Normalising a conversation is a curious thing. Part of us wants to talk more, listen more and experience the healing power of not being alone in our experience.  Another part of us doesn’t know if we’re ready for what that might mean. What if it’s not just our story to share? Or we’re not in the right time or place to cope with the response?

In last week’s interview (#073) I talked to ITV presenter and host of the Making Babies podcast, Andrea Byrne. During our conversation she shared the story of her mission to tackle the stigma around infertility and how, when she was unable to give voice to her own story, she was inspired by the people who were sharing when she couldn’t.

Looking back on our conversation, in this week’s episode I explore the power of sharing when the time is right, and reflect on what we can learn from the three simple strategies that Andrea used to resist the pressure, stay safe and prepare for the time when it was her turn to speak out and lead her mission.

If you’re looking for permission to pause, recharge and reset, this week’s Insights episode is for you.

14 Oct 2022#065: Anti-Racism: A Together Agenda with Olukemi Ogunyemi01:10:07

The moment where George Floyd died, and the Black Lives Matter movement was born, changed the trajectory of a lifetime for Olukemi Ogunyemi. Racism, violence and abuse, further complicated by the trauma of living with anorexia, were layers of a lifetime that she consigns to not knowing any different; until international outcry and condemnation gave permission for a completely different conversation.

Telling her story became the thing that Olukemi couldn’t not do. Spurred on by the permission suddenly created by white people taking responsibility and initiating action to create change, Olukemi started writing. Hearing other people saying ‘it’s not ok’ compelled her to share her life experience, determined to challenge racism and create a world that would be different for her children and grandchildren.

In this deeply challenging conversation, body therapist and author Olukemi Ogunyemi shares the story of her upbringing in Scotland as a mixed-race child, and brings her book “Brown Girl in the Ring” to life. It’s a conversation about the trauma of experiencing racial abuse and the responsibilities of individuals, communities and organisations to raise awareness of racism (personal and institutional), create impactful change and build a better future.

Made all the more pertinent by the Sheku Bayoh Public Inquiry, currently being heard in Scotland, this episode is for anyone who wants to learn more about how anti-racism can and must be everyone’s agenda if we are to build a safe, tolerant and compassionate future. It’s also for those who are interested in developing their understanding of personal identity and how knowing who we are reduces the risk of violence and harm in our communities.

MORE ABOUT MY GUEST: OLUKEMI OGUNYEMI

Olukemi Ogunyemi is a highly successful body therapist who also speaks and blogs on racism and transgender issues. In her book,  Brown Girl in the Ring, she tells of her momentous struggle growing up as a mixed race child in Scotland. She describes in horrific, gut-wrenching detail the acts of racism that continued into adulthood and wreaked havoc for her as a wife and mother of four children.

Olukemi is on a mission to tackle racism head on through compassion and not blame and, in doing so, to create a different world and a better future for her children and grandchildren.

Olukemi’s full bio and contact details can be found on her personal guest page.
