20 Jan 2025Ep 171 - Exploring Africa’s Wildlife Wonders with Rich de Gouveia – A Guide’s Journey01:47:12

Hello and welcome to Episode 171 with Rich de Gouveia, and one word sums up this episode: inspirational. Honestly, this will hit you hard. This is one of the most passionate episodes I have recorded to date. Read the summary below, dive into the episode and get planning that trip to Africa.

In this captivating episode of the Winging It Travel Podcast, host James Hammond sits down with Rich de Gouveia, founder of Arc Earth Travel, private safari guide, photographer, and conservation advocate. Rich takes us on a journey through his fascinating life, from growing up in South Africa and his early love for nature to his transition from the corporate world to becoming a ranger and safari guide, eventually founding his own travel company.

Rich shares unforgettable experiences from his work, including gorilla trekking in Rwanda, where he explains the intricate habituation process that allows tourists to have life-changing encounters with mountain gorillas. He describes moments like standing just meters away from a 500-pound silverback and the deep emotional connection guests feel in their presence.

The episode dives into the complexities of the Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania, highlighting both the awe-inspiring spectacle of wildlife and the challenges posed by overcrowded tourism. Rich contrasts this with more intimate safari experiences in South Africa and Botswana, where guests can explore vast, uncrowded reserves.

Rich also discusses the important role of safari guides, emphasizing their ability to connect people with nature while educating them about ecosystems. He talks about his own journey, from dreaming of becoming a guide as a child to creating Arc Earth Travel, where he offers personalized, conservation-focused tours that go beyond traditional safari experiences.

A significant portion of the conversation focuses on poaching and conservation efforts, with Rich detailing the devastating effects on rhino populations. He recounts seeing 17 poached rhinos and explains initiatives like de-horning and radio collaring to protect these animals from extinction. Rich highlights the critical need for collaboration among governments, local communities, and conservation organizations to create sustainable solutions for wildlife and ecosystems.

Throughout the episode, Rich paints a vivid picture of Africa's diverse landscapes, from the deserts of Namibia to the lush Okavango Delta and the iconic safaris of Kruger National Park. He shares insights into how safaris not only provide breathtaking encounters with the Big Five but also contribute to conservation by making wildlife worth more alive than dead.

Rich's passion for wildlife, photography, and teaching others shines through as he reflects on the transformative power of travel and connection with nature. Whether you're dreaming of a safari or curious about conservation, this episode offers an inspiring and thought-provoking exploration of Africa's beauty and challenges.

09 Sep 2024Ep 155 w/ Shafik Meghji - A Deep Dive Into Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia in South America01:01:14

Welcome to episode 155! This week, Shafik Meghji rejoins me for a second time to discuss travelling in Patagonia. In this episode, we will touch on Cordoba, Argentina's second city, and why it isn't on the traveller's radar for travel in Argentina.

We discuss the best times to travel to Patagonia, the issue of over-tourism, and the different entry points into the region. We explore the landscapes and attractions of Patagonia's Argentine and Chilean sides, including the Peninsula Valdes, Welsh Patagonia, Los Glaciares National Park, and the Lake District. Patagonia can be expensive, but we mention the affordability of travelling by bus in the region and highlight the Tren del Fin del Mundo, the southernmost railway on earth, and travelling by boat in Chile to reach Patagonia.

Shafik talked us through his previous travels to the region when he visited Ushuaia, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and Antarctica. Shafik has travelled in the region for the last two decades and was based in Buenas Aires for a year in his younger days. He is an expert in the region, and I am so glad to get his thoughts on Patagonia. Thanks, Shafik, for coming to the show; we will get that hat trick in!

Takeaways

  • Patagonia is a vast region spanning the southern halves of Argentina and Chile, known for its dramatic landscapes and wilderness.

  • The best times to visit Patagonia are spring + autumn to avoid the peak summer crowds.

  • Overtourism is a concern in popular spots like Torres del Paine.

  • Comfortable buses offer amenities like meals + entertainment.

  • The End of the World Train in Ushuaia, Argentina, was built by convict labour + is now a tourist attraction.

  • Ushuaia is the main port for ships to Antarctica, and visiting Antarctica is a popular tourist activity.

  • Cordoba, Argentina's second city, is known for its beautiful architecture, universities, and surrounding natural attractions.

  • Travelling independently in Patagonia is possible with some planning, and the public transport network is reliable.

  • Train travel in Europe is a great way to explore the continent.

03 Feb 2025Ep 172 Part 1 w/ Adam Bamford - Why Norwich Should Be on Your UK Travel List: A Local’s Guide00:28:39

Hello and welcome to this week's episode, in which my first-ever guest, Adam Bamford, returns to the podcast for the first time in four years (as a solo guest). Check out the show notes below for this episode as we take a deep dive into Norwich, UK, from a local perspective.

In this Winging It Travel Podcast episode, host James Hammonds is joined by his longtime friend Adam "Bambi" Bamford to explore their hometown—Norwich, UK. Often overlooked in favour of London and Cambridge from the local area, Norwich is a city packed with history, charm, and fascinating quirks.

James and Bambi kick things off with some fascinating facts and figures about Norwich before diving into why Norwich Cathedral is a must-visit, from its towering architecture to its unexpected resident peregrine falcons. They also share an intriguing fact about the Maids Head Hotel—a historic gem with a royal connection (but you’ll have to listen to find out what it is!). You will also understand why William the Conqueror played a pivotal role in the creation of Norwich as a city, including some of its stunning landmarks.

They wrap up by revealing their top 10 things to do in Norwich, covering everything from the medieval streets of Elm Hill to the stunning views at Mousehold Heath. Whether you're a history buff, a traveller looking for unique destinations, or just curious about this underrated city, this episode will leave you wanting to book a trip to Norwich.

A disclaimer here: A few of the facts about Norwich could be urban legend or completely rogue, but let's go with it and have some fun.

Stay tuned for Part 2 (the next episode), where they’ll explore Norwich’s best cafes, restaurants, pubs, alternative streets, day trips in Norfolk (the county) and other things that popped up in the conversation!

🎧 Listen now and get inspired to visit Norwich!

07 Apr 2025Ep 176 w/ Nick Cohen - We Hiked Acatenango Volcano to See Fuego and Chaos Ensued for Nick!01:49:22

🎙️ Episode Title: We Hiked Acatenango to See Fuego and Chaos Ensued for Nick!

So we climbed Acatenango together… and that was already intense. But then Nick decided to go one volcano further — literally. Nick and I met in El Salvador, travelled to Antigua in Guatemala, and decided to hike the Acatenango Volcano together.

In this funny, honest episode, we recount our wild trek up Guatemala’s Volcán Acatenango — a two-day grind through steep trails, freezing nights, and jaw-dropping views. But the real twist? While most sane people watched Fuego erupt from a safe distance, Nick hiked straight toward it with a group in tow.

Yup. He dropped down the saddle and made the bonus climb to stand just a few hundred meters from one of the most active volcanoes in the world — Volcán de Fuego — while it erupted.

For an extra bit of money, you can add a hike to Fuego when you get to base camp, and Nick shares his stories, the good and bad of what to expect when you climb. Nick left at 5 pm for Fuego and did not return until nearly midnight, so there is much to discuss! It should have only taken 3-5 hours, so it didn't go quite as planned.

🏕️ From campfire laughs to hiking-induced delirium and Nick’s death-defying detour, this episode is full of high-altitude absurdity, heart-racing adventure, and a whole lot of ash.

Whether you’re curious about hiking Acatenango, dreaming of volcano views, or just want to hear a story about a guy willingly walking towards an erupting mountain... this one’s a ride.

To add to the drama, there is some great content in here about hiking Acatenango and Fuego in general, so if this is something on your bucket list, you could learn a few things from this episode.

🔥 What’s Inside:

  • The Acatenango climb: expectations vs. reality
  • Camp life at 3,600m: freezing temps, volcanic light shows, and hot noodles
  • Nick’s wild decision to summit Fuego — and what he saw up there
  • The sounds, sights, and full sensory chaos of a volcano erupting nearby
  • Advice for anyone thinking of doing the hike (and the Fuego add-on)
  • A reminder that the best stories come from slightly bad ideas

🎧 Ideal for listeners who love:

  • Real, raw, and ridiculous travel stories
  • Volcano hiking in Guatemala
  • Backpacking comedy with an edge of danger
  • Inspiring (and slightly reckless) solo challenges

21 Sep 2024Winging It on location at Garibaldi Lake - an immersive audio experience on a 20km overnight hike00:18:33

Welcome to this week's bonus episode as I share a new concept for the Winging It Travel Podcast. This is an immersive audio episode about my 20 km return hike to Garibaldi Lake over one night and two days. I share my experience hiking up with forest sounds and hiking poles, my reaction to the fantastic views of Garibaldi Lake, and the ups and downs of camp life. The elevation was 900m from the parking lot, with most of the elevation occurring in the first 6km of the hike towards the campground and vice versa back down the next day.

Along the way, I collected sounds, spoke into the camera for a real-life reaction, and had a fantastic coffee product to share. I combined these with post-hike responses to give you the sense you were there with me on the hike. In this episode, we embark on an unforgettable journey along the stunning Garibaldi Lake Trail in British Columbia. Join me as I hike through dense forests, across scenic meadows, and up to the breathtaking Garibaldi Lake with crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Along the way, I’ll share tips for tackling this challenging yet rewarding trail. We’ll set up camp at the beautiful Garibaldi Lake Campground for an overnight wilderness adventure. Canada is one of the best places in the world for lake views, and this one is no different. This is a true hiking adventure in Canada and one very close to my home city of Vancouver, just over an hour's drive away. This is a must when visiting the area!

I am excited to share this new type of episode with you; let me know what you think. I hope it provides you with that travel experience and valuable hiking tips for Garibaldi Lake.

25 Nov 2024Ep 166 - Meet Chris + Ellen - The Art of Spontaneous Travel + Apear (The New Sustainable Travel Accessory)02:01:40

Hello and welcome to Episode 166 with Chris and Ellen, who are YouTubers, travel creators and friends of mine who I met this year at TravelCon. They are based in Asheville, and a caveat for this episode is that this was recorded before the devastating floods this year, so please bear in mind some of the information relayed may not be true anymore, which is super sad. However, this is a fun episode with lots of laughs, tips, travel content ideas and a new launch of their product, Apear. This is a sustainable travel blanket found on the link below.

In this conversation, Chris and Ellen discuss their travel experiences and their love for Asheville, North Carolina. They talk about the unique characteristics of Asheville, such as its artsy and hippie vibe, its music scene, and its reputation as a beer city. They also touch on the myths and legends surrounding the Appalachian Mountains and the ghost tours in Asheville.

Chris and Ellen share their childhood travel experiences and how they developed a love for exploring new places. They discuss their travel philosophy, which includes a mix of budget travel and splurging on bucket list trips. They also talk about their work-life balance while traveling and the activities they enjoy, such as taking walking tours, visiting museums, and exploring local coffee shops and thrift stores. Chris and Ellen discuss their favorite travel destinations, including France and Scotland. They talk about the different regions of France they have visited, such as Normandy, the Loire Valley, and Alsace. They appreciate the food, culture, and slow pace of life in France. In Scotland, they enjoy exploring the west coast, including Loch Lomond and Inverness. They mention the NC 500 and the Hebrides as popular destinations in Scotland.

They also share their experiences at the Olympics and their love for competitive sports. Ellen and Hammo discuss their favorite cities and regions to visit, including Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, New England in the United States, and Prince Edward Island in Canada. They highlight the unique characteristics and attractions of each place, such as the mix of grit and academia in Edinburgh, the gothic architecture and live music scene in Glasgow, the colonial charm and seafood of New England, and the beautiful landscapes and historic sites of Prince Edward Island.

They also discuss their methods of documenting their travels, including voice notes and filming videos for their YouTube channel. Ellen and Hammo discuss their approach to travel and the importance of enjoying the moment. They emphasize the need to balance content creation with personal experiences and memories. They also share their house-sitting experiences and how it has allowed them to save money and have unique travel opportunities.

They discuss their travel philosophy and the types of travel they enjoy, as well as their upcoming travel plans. In this final part of the conversation, Chris and Ellen discuss their favorite countries, places they didn't like, favorite landmarks, and their advice for nervous travelers. They also share their favorite places to drink coffee and discuss the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new experiences.

22 Feb 2021Episode 2 – One Week In Lub D, Bangkok, Thailand00:37:35

Today, I am discussing about my week at Lub D, Bangkok in 2013. Lub D is a hostel chain in South East Asia and at the time, they had two hostels in Bangkok and we stayed at the one on Silom Road. This was the first place we landed at in South East Asia and we had a great week meeting fellow backpackers and seeing the sights of Bangkok. If you are curious to know what those first few initial nights are like when backpacking to a new country or area of the world, then this will help you understand how good it is.

31 Jan 2022Episode 50 – Sports Travel With Mark Tisshaw in Australia, Ukraine, Brazil, Barbados, Antigua, Grenada, France + Russia01:48:40

Hello and welcome to number 50! To celebrate this milestone, Mark Tisshaw, a well known journalist in the car industry and a friend of mine for 20+ years joins me to talk about some of our epic trips. We concentrate on three big trips which have a sporting twinge to them.

We talk about our first long haul trip to Australia to watch The Ashes in 2010/11. Then we move on to our road trip from London to Ukraine for Euro 2012. Then we delve into the 2014 trip to Brazil for the FIFA World Cup. We briefly cover trips to the West Indies, France, Russia and of course some quick fire questions.

This is not only an episode about sport, we also talk about how you plan trips like this, how you figure things out without a smartphone, the beauty of unfiltered travel as well as sharing some stories from those trips. The journey always seemed to be better than the actual sporting event we watched. You don't want to miss this episode, this really was fun to record.

07 Feb 2022Episode 51 - Travelling With Matty Dyas in Haiti, Spain, Bangkok, Slovakia + Moldova01:51:18
Hello and welcome to number 51! This week Matty Dyas from the Travel Bubble Podcast and the 4th best tour leader in the world with Intrepid Travel talks about his travel history to date. We discuss Matty living in Haiti for 6 months, how he has completed 17 ultramarathons, the dream of living in Bangkok for 3 years, his jobs teaching English in Spain and Slovakia and details of one of the most unique tours he leads with Intrepid in the Transnistria region in Moldova. A super interesting episode with lots of stories, tips and information about travel you probably have never heard before. This was super fun to record and I am excited to release this episode. Hope you enjoy!

NEW MERCHANDISE STORE - as mentioned in the intro, I am releasing a new merchandise store with teepublic.com which will be live on Friday 11th Feb. There will be a link to access the store with money off for the first 48hours. I will share on these notes and on social media channels when I have it.

Link - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/winging-it-travel-podcast?ref_id=25823

Just a note about Matty's own podcast called the Travel Bubble Podcast.

In a not-so-far-fetched, dystopian future, world authorities have put all citizens on lockdown.
Thankfully, you can still go on holiday but there is a catch- you can only choose 3 countries to visit for the rest of your life.
Every Wednesday, Matty Dyas talks to travel industry professionals, globetrotters and adventurers from all over the world. They tell us their Travel Bubble choices providing you with post-lockdown inspiration and an ever-growing travel bucket list.
The world's locked down and we can't travel, so let's do the next best thing and talk about it.

14 Mar 2022Episode 56 - Travelling With Emma Thomson in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Zimbabwe and Bhutan01:46:01
Hello and welcome to number 56! This week I am travelling with Emma Thomson who is a multi award-winning travel journalist who most recently was named Travel Writer of the Year in 2019 by the British Guild of Travel Writers and won National Consumer Feature of the Year at 2019 The Travel Media Awards. Emma is a regular contributor to National Geographic Traveller, The Telegraph, The Times and Wanderlust Travel Magazine to name a few. An experienced speaker she has given talks at the Nat Geo headquarters in Washington DC, the Frontline Club and Royal Geographical Society in London and can occasionally be hear on BBC Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent.

This week we delve into Emma's recent assignment in Sri Lanka, talk about her awesome trip with Wild Frontiers to Pakistan, discuss the wonder which is Iran, wax lyrical on our mutual passion for Bhutan as well as dip into wildlife travel in Zimbabwe. We also talk about the life of a travel journalist which Emma has been doing for 10+ years. Of course, I wanted to ask about her personal travel so Emma is tested with some tough quick fire travel questions at the end. You will love this episode as it will inspire you to get travelling and book that trip. Emma and I share a mutual passion for travel and you will hear that in this episode. Further more, Emma's dog Esme, was so excited, that she joined in for the introduction but it could be the fact that she anticipated that Emma would get her breed wrong when asked. Just to clarify, Emma's dog is a Cocker Spaniel, the Collie reference was blamed on tiredness, we accept that and move on. However, below are some links to Emma's articles that we reference during the recording and can all be found on her website. I implore you to check them out. Happy listening AND happy reading! Be inspired! Thanks for listening!
