12 Feb 2022 | S1 Ep.7 There's no place like America today by Curtis Mayfield | 00:55:34
Show Notes A first for the Wine & Vinyl Club, everyone brings a wine to this episode. Do we manage to get through three bottles and remain reasonably coherent? Pour yourself a lovely drink, settle down and listen to find out, as we largely disagree about Curtis Mayfield’s 1975 melancholy funk album, There’s no place like America today. To match this album, Chris brings a $60 bottle of 2017 Amelia Park Cabernet Sauvignon from the Margaret River Region, Western Australia. An outstanding example of a Margaret River Cab Sav, with dark brooding fruit and notes of cedar and graphite. https://ameliaparkwines.com.au/products/reserve-cabernet-sauvignon

12 Feb 2022 | S1 Ep.9 WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO by Billie Eilish | 00:51:12
Show Notes
This episode, The Wine & Vinyl Club goes contemporary. Chris, David and Christian discuss Billie Eilish-When we all fall asleep, where do we go? An anti-pop record, that ironically set the parameters for the current alternative pop scene. We are not exactly the target audience for this music, so join us to hear what we think and whether we manage to match 2 bottles of wine to this album.
To match this album, Christian brings a chilled bottle of 2020 Mixed Business from Noisy Ritual. A modern urban brewery/winery in Brunswick, Melbourne, Australia. A $32 light summer red, which is an unusual blend of 81 % Sunbury Pinot Noir and 19% King Valley Pinot Gris. https://noisyritual.com.au/
Chris also brings a boutique wine. 2021 “Roxanne the Razor” NND from Delinquente Wines in the Riverland wine region, South Australia. A light, easy drinking $25 blend of two Italian grape varieties Negroamaro and Nero d’Avola. https://delinquentewineco.com/
During our conversation, we discuss the track “Listen before I go” a beautiful but heart-rending song relating to mental health and suicide. If you would like any further information or support, we hope you will contact one of the many support groups out there. Below is a link to Healthdirect, which provides links to several organisations that provide support and education for people with mental illness and their families and carers throughout Australia. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-helplines

13 Mar 2022 | S1 Ep.10 Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers | 00:46:11
Show Notes It’s the final episode of season 1 and Chris, David and Christian review a hard rocking album from the 90’s, Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Join us for the mayhem that ensues, when we all down a stiff cocktail and two delectable bottles of wine, then attempt to discuss coherently an album we all agree is a classic.
To match this album, Chris brings an unusual Australian blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Pinot Noir, the 2020 ‘Nouveau’ from Meadowbank Winery in the Derwent Valley, Tasmania. This wine retails for around $43 AUD. We loved this light, easy drinking summer red. https://www.meadowbank.com.au/
Christian brings something very different. A deliciously light Italian red, the Torre Mora Scalunera Etna Rosso Doc 2020. This $30 wine is also a blend, consisting of two Italian varieties Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. https://www.piccini1882.it/en/family-estates/torre-mora/#azienda
David brings a ‘Funky Monk’. A hard rocking cocktail which celebrates both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik by fusing four key ingredients to create something very special.
Recipe: 1 shot Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin, ½ shot Tanqueray Gin infused with Earl Grey tea, ½ shot of Cointreau, ½ shot Belsazar Dry Vermouth, ½ shot of lime infused sugar syrup, 1 shot of fresh lime juice, a few drops of Disaronno Amaretto liqueur. Shake with ice in a cocktail shaker and serve over ice in a rocks glass. (You can also add a few drops of Tabasco sauce if you want to spice things up)

Top with ginger beer to taste a slice of lime and sprig of mint to garnish. David brings a ‘Rainbow Warrior’ cocktail. A multicoloured alcoholic slushy, that looks amazing but certainly doesn’t taste it. Recipe: 1 shot each of Vodka and Bacardi, ½ shot of Cointreau and 1 shot of fresh lime juice. Freeze a packet of mixed icepoles (zuperdoopers) then blend separately to create different coloured slushies. Layer each slushy in a tall glass adding a little of your alcohol mix as you go. When its a rainbow of colours, add dramatic garnishes such as; lit sparklers, umbrellas, fruit slices, novelty straws etc. We finish off the episode with Chris’ ‘Lose your Vision’ cocktail. Which involves a shot followed by a delightfully sophisticated cocktail. Recipe: 1 shot of Old Young’s Pavlova vodka with a tuft of pink fairy floss sitting on top of the shot glass. David brings a cold ‘Spiced Sangria’ suitable for a Christmas down under, and a hot ‘Vin chaude’ version of the same drink for winters night. Recipe: Make a spiced syrup. Finely grate an orange and lemon and mix with a ½ cup of sugar. Cling wrap and leave overnight to infuse. The next day add the citrus sugar infusion to a cup of water and heat gently. Add 2 cloves, 2 star anise, 2 pepper corns, 4 crushed cardamom pods and a stick of cinnamon. When the sugar has dissolved, put a lid on the pan and turn off the heat. Let the syrup steep for an hour. Once cool, filter and refrigerate the syrup. To a bottle of light fruity red such as a Pinot Noir, Gamay, or Grenache, I used a Dolan & Dunn, Mataro from the Barossa, South Australia. Add 2 shots of Grande Marnier and Cointreau, 2 cloves, 2, star anise, 2 pepper corns, 4 crushed cardamom pods and a stick of cinnamon. Add a chopped orange and lemon, then cover with cling wrap and let it sit overnight in the fridge. For the Sangria, pour half a glass of wine and ½ a shot of syrup to taste. Serve over ice, topped with soda water and a sprig of rosemary (optional). For the Vin chaude, warm the wine gently (do not let it boil) and then let it sit in the pan for 10 minutes. Add Serve in a mug with ½ a shot of syrup to taste and a cinnamon stick (optional).

Also try an organic or biodynamic wine with minimal intervention. If you can get two bottles see if there are any differences between them.

14 Mar 2023 | S3 Ep6. Ready for the Weekend by Calvin Harris | 00:48:08

13 Nov 2024 | S4 Ep2. The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths | 01:09:14
What a polarizing album! David loves it, Christian hates it and Chris is wavering somewhere between love and hate. How will you feel once you’ve listened to this episode? What we can all agree on is how good the wines were for this episode.
Every episode the podcast has an accompanying Spotify Playlist. Below is a link to 30 tracks made from a selection of tunes from this episode’s album, plus additional artists we think you might like if you enjoyed listening to this album. To match ‘The Queen is Dead’ Chris brings a $28 2020 Bodega Garzon Tannat Reserva, from Uruguay. https://bodegagarzon.com/en/wine/tannat-2020/
This episode Chris also brings the value wine as David forgot. He brings an $18 2021 Amelia Park Trellis, Cabernet Merlot from Margaret River in Western Australia. https://ameliaparkwines.com.au/products/2021-amelia-park-trellis-cabernet-merlot
WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE: 100% Tannat may prove hard to come by, however, Chris suggests if a big tannic wine is what you fancy how about a Cabernet Sauvignon from Bordeaux, a powerful Barossa Shiraz or even a Nebbiolo from Italy. Or another Italian wine with even more tannins is the Sagrantino. For this episode we are joined by Kate and new guest to the W&VC, Adam. Chris, David and Christian don’t fall into the demographic that Taylor’s work is aimed at, so we enlisted the expert help of a couple of youngsters.

W&VC SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS – S4 Ep3. Taylor Swift: 1989 https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5Jh074l6rDmWKF8UifdS7F?si=ec9aff39cea240a0
To match ‘1989’ Christian brings a 2022 Hugh Hamilton Cinderella Chardonay (members only) from the McClarren Vale, in South Australia. https://hughhamiltonwines.com.au/
This episode David brings two value wines recommended by two different bottle shops. The first was a Spanish white wine recommended by Midland Dan Murphy’s. The Marqués de Riscal 2022 Verdejo for $16.99 https://www.marquesderiscal.com/en
The second wine recommended by Copper and Oak in Guildford, is the Zema Estate, Coonawarra 2018 Shiraz $22.00 https://www.zema.com.au/product/2018-Shiraz?srsltid=AfmBOopJ7ZAFr_jXIpQlViOiWB0v54prtQHoOvir0qeKGKc1Lw-ZX0Zz
WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE: If you like the Verdejo, you might also like a Swan Valley Chenin or Verdelho. If you like the cool climate style of the Coonawarra Shiraz, look for a French or Australian Syrah. This is still the shiraz grape but usually indicates a more delicate, cool climate style. Adam ventured outside the wine realm and recommended Boston Brewery Peach Lemonade produced by Boston Brewery from Denmark, WA. W&VC SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS – S4 Ep5. Led Zeppelin: IV https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2wUzlxli3je11IrGjM4QlK?si=5322636f851d406c
To match ‘Led Zeppelin IV’ Chris brings a 2021 Cantina Zaccagnini "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Tralcetto" from Italy for $17. https://www.cantinazaccagnini.it/en/
This episode Christian brings the value wine a $25 bottle of 2022 Three Gardens Grenache Shiraz Mataro, from the Barossa Valley in South Australia. https://www.langmeilwinery.com.au/product/2023-Three-Gardens-Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro
Matt brings 4 drinks: - Heineken, Jack Daniel’s, Johnnie Walker and Vodka. This is the reason why we are all slurring by the end of the episode.
WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE: Why not try comparing a wine from Montepulciano the region with a wine made from the grape Montepulciano. Australia does GSM really well but you can also look to pick something up from the Rhone region of France.

09 Jan 2025 | S4 Ep6. I Just Can't Stop It by The Beat | 01:10:11
The W&VC skank their way through this classic 2Tone album from the 1980’s. We discover David loves Ska music, Christian doesn’t like covers and Chris hates questions about ‘how many chickens it takes…….’
Every episode the podcast has an accompanying Spotify Playlist. Below is a link to 30 tracks made from a selection of tunes from this episode’s album, plus additional artists we think you might like if you enjoyed listening to this album.

It’s light, bright and refreshing and very easy drinking, but watch out it still packs a punch.

23 Jan 2025 | S4 Ep7. Cosmic Thing by the B52s | 01:11:48
We had such a good time recording this episode and we also drank some fantastic wines. We hope you have just as much fun listening to it.
Every episode the podcast has an accompanying Spotify Playlist. Below is a link to 30 tracks made from a selection of tunes from this episode’s album, plus additional artists we think you might like if you enjoyed listening to this album.

To match ‘Cosmic Thing’ by The B52s, David brings an Athens Iced Tea cocktail: 2 shots (60ml) dry gin / vodka, ½ to ¾ shot (20ml) lemon juice, ½ shot (15ml) simple syrup (infused with lemon, lime and kaffir lime), pour in a tall/Collins glass over ice and top up with homemade cold black tea. Garnish with a slice of lemon and kaffir lime leaf.
Chris brought the value wine for this episode a 2019 Dopff Au Moulin, Alsace Pinot Noir from Alsace in France for $35. https://www.dopff-au-moulin.fr/en/home/
To match the album Christian brought an 2021 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara California for $70. https://aubonclimat.com/
WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE: This was an episode for the Pinot Noir lovers out there. We tasted a French and American Pinot, so why not try picking up an Austrian or German Blaufrankish or Zweigelt. They have a bit more of the ‘funk’ that we love in old school pinot. 06 Feb 2025 | S4 Ep8. (x) by Ed Sheeran | 01:01:33
This episode the W&VC is joined by Riley who also chose the album. X was definitely outside our comfort zone but as always there were lots of laughs and plenty of good booze.

W&VC SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS – S4 Ep8. Ed Sheeran: X https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2dBYKibs3EIAC3BDCHZFdy?si=ec1d9a39ce0248d9
To match ‘X’ by Ed Sheeran, Riley brings a classic cocktail, an Old Fashioned: 1 and ½ shots of bourbon or rye whiskey, 1 cube of sugar or ½ shot of simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, orange peel for garnish and a splash of water over ice.
David brought the value wine for this episode. He visited Commune Wines in Maylands, Perth and Daisy recommended a bottle of Wilyabrup Chardonnay 2023 from Fairbrossen Wines, WA for $28. https://www.fairbrossen.com.au/
To match the album Chris brought a bottle of Galway Pipe 12 YO Grand Tawny fortified wine. https://galwaypipe.com.au/products
WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THIS EPISODE: If you are partial to a more modern style of Chardonnay, then Chris recommends Margaret River and Yarra Valley as two Australian wine regions to explore. Or if your bank balance allows, try a French Chablis or something from the Mâconnais. Fortified wines such as Muscat from the Swan Valley are fantastic. Chris recommends wineries such as Taliancich or Sitella. Or you could try some real Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal. Show Notes This episode Christian brings both wines to match the third record released by Crowded House, their 1991 album, Woodface. It’s an ethereal blend of gorgeous harmonies and dark enigmatic lyrics, however, opinions over the album are divided (possibly down lines of nationality). Or perhaps, it’s all these things and more. Chris, David and Christian certainly do not see eye to eye on this one but we do manage to drink some wonderful wines whilst listening to it.
