Deep in the backcountry, 30 miles from the nearest trailhead, the duo's adventure was marked by stunning scenery, an encounter with a massive grizzly, and the thrill of dropping a trophy bull elk. But the beauty of the wilderness quickly gave way to a fight for survival.

As they were retrieving their elk, Todd was unexpectedly kicked by a horse, turning what should have been a celebratory moment into a harrowing ordeal. With sheer drops surrounding them and miles of rugged terrain ahead, the situation became a race against time to get Todd the medical attention he desperately needed. Despite the severity of his injury, Todd's stubborn determination led him to believe he could make it out on his own. Comprising sportsmen's organizations, local businesses, union members, and concerned citizens, their mission centers on preserving the region's rugged landscapes, abundant wildlife, and recreational opportunities. Working in collaboration with esteemed organizations like Bowhunters of Wyoming, Muley Fanatic Foundation, Wyoming Wildlife Federation, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Trout Unlimited, United Steelworkers Local 13214, and Craig Thompson - Private Landowner. The GLMC has crafted a comprehensive proposal that seeks a balanced approach to land management.

In the second part of this interview, we are privileged to be joined by Craig Rood, a seasoned expert in Wyoming's natural resources. With a career that includes significant experience as a former Trona plant manager, Craig has a deep understanding of the intricate balance between resource utilization and preservation. Cheatgrass, often referred to as the "cancer of Wyoming," is an invasive plant species that has been wreaking havoc on the state's native ecosystems. In this episode, we sit down with Phillip Lockwood, a Fire Management Specialist for the BLM stationed at the Kemmerer Field Office, to delve into the importance of this fight against cheatgrass and how it is helping protect the landscape and wildlife, particularly the Mule Deer population.

Cheatgrass, in particular, poses a significant challenge due to its aggressive nature. It has a propensity to impact large areas of land and disrupt native plant communities. Moreover, it is highly flammable and spreads wildfires with ease. Native plants struggle to recover as quickly as cheatgrass after a fire, leading to a dangerous cycle of more frequent fires and the eventual dominance of cheatgrass monocultures.

The fight against cheatgrass in Wyoming is not just a battle against an invasive plant; it's a fight to protect the diverse landscapes, wildlife, and activities that make this state unique as well as Mule Deer habitat. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of organizations like the BLM and their partners, the landscape is receiving the attention it deserves, and the ongoing battle against cheatgrass offers a beacon of hope for Wyoming's wild things and wild places.

In this heartwarming episode of Wild Things & Wild Places, host Joshua Coursey introduces listeners to a remarkable young hunter, Aeriana (Ana) Quinteros, and her family from Navarre, Ohio. Ana, a dedicated and passionate young hunter, leads an active life despite using a communication device to speak and complete her work. She participates in 4-H, showcasing her animals and playing wheelchair soccer, all while nurturing her love for the outdoors through hunting and fishing.

The Putting the U in Hunt program is a transformative initiative designed to provide youth with opportunities to experience the thrill and tradition of hunting while fostering a deep connection to the outdoors when they otherwise may not have the chance. Since its inception, the program has impacted the lives of over 100 young hunters, all of whom have successfully completed their hunts, showcasing an incredible 100% success rate.

Ana's story reminds us of the power of perseverance and passion, as well as the impact the Putting the U in Hunt program has had. Tune in to hear Ana’s inspiring story and the incredible support from her family and the MFF team. The MFF goes the extra mile to ensure that the hunting experience is entirely stress-free for these brave young hunters and their families. They cover all expenses, including license fees, lodging, hunt day food, and beverages. Local businesses and volunteers generously contribute, transforming it into a community-wide effort to support these young warriors.

Meet Grayson "G-Money" Albright, a young hunter with a heartwarming story that reminds us of the unyeilding spirit of individuals facing life-threatening illnesses. Grayson, who was born with a rare genetic syndrome, has spent a significant portion of his life in the hospital, battling his condition with unmatched courage and determination. Despite the challenges he's encountered, Grayson had a dream - to hunt an elk, a dream that would soon become a reality thanks to the Muley Fanatic Foundation's "Putting the U in Hunt" program.

Grayson's elk hunting adventure took place in the beautiful landscapes of Wyoming, a state known for its abundant wildlife and breathtaking scenery. His journey began with high hopes and an unwavering spirit, ready to take on the challenges of the hunt.

On the very first day, Grayson, along with his dedicated team, encountered numerous elk but chose to pass up several nice bulls. The second day of the hunt began slowly, with the morning marked by cold winds and dense fog that seemed to obscure any sign of elk. However, as the day progressed, a spark of excitement was reignited. The team's perseverance paid off when they spotted a coyote, and Grayson seized the opportunity to take a shot, displaying his marksmanship and resilience.

The true highlight of the day was yet to come. As they ventured further into the wilderness, they heard the unmistakable bugle of a magnificent bull elk, echoing from over a thousand yards away. Guided by the sound, they carefully approached and, with unwavering determination, Grayson took a perfect lung shot.

With that shot, Grayson achieved his dream and became a part of the hunting tradition. His first-ever bull elk was a testament to his strength and the unwavering support of the "Putting the U in Hunt" program, as well as the dedication of his team.

As they began their journey back with Grayson's remarkable trophy, G-Money had one more surprise in store. He discovered a sweet "dead head," a unique souvenir of his incredible adventure.

Grayson Albright's elk hunt serves as an inspiring reminder that no matter the obstacles we face, our dreams and passions can drive us to achieve the extraordinary. Grayson's story is one of resilience, hope, and the wild places that can heal even the most challenging of circumstances.

In a deeply moving episode of "Wild Things and Wild Places," Sheridan Chief of Police, Chief Travis Koltiska, joins us to honor and remember Sgt. Nevada Krinkee, a fallen hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This episode is not only a tribute to Sgt. Krinkee’s dedication and bravery but also highlights the efforts being made to honor his memory and support the community he loved.

On February 13, 2024, the Sheridan, Wyoming Police Department faced an unimaginable tragedy when Sgt. Nevada Krinkee was shot and killed while serving his community. Sgt. Krinkee was known for his unwavering dedication and passion for helping others. Before joining the police force, Nevada served with distinction in the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, completing two tours in Afghanistan.

Nevada’s legacy of service extended beyond his military and law enforcement careers. One of his greatest joys was helping children.  Nevada left behind a loving wife, Karla, and a 6-month-old daughter, Bella. His dedication to his family and community will never be forgotten.

In honor of Sgt. Krinkee’s memory, the Sheridan Police Department and the Police Protective Association (PPA) have partnered with Weatherby, Inc. to raise funds for a scholarship fund. This fund will provide educational opportunities to students, ensuring a brighter future for our youth.

To raise funds for the scholarship, Weatherby, Inc. has crafted a unique rifle, the Model 307 Alpine MDT Carbon, engraved with Nevada’s name and adorned with the Thin Blue Line. This rifle, chambered in 7mm PRC, is a one-of-a-kind creation designed to honor Nevada’s legacy. This exclusive model hasn't even hit the sales floor yet; it was just released.

OneCanopy is equipped with a 34,000-square-foot greenhouse and surrounding property, they have the capacity to grow over a million seedlings annually, facilitating reforestation efforts on a large scale. But their impact extends far beyond just planting trees; they collaborate with various stakeholders, from seed collectors to nonprofits, from government entities to schools, ensuring a comprehensive and holistic approach to conservation.
