14 Feb 2022 | 35. Christine Fraser - Ground Breaking Golf Course Architect | 00:50:06
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. I am your host Michael McDonald. In this episode we shine a light on Canadian golf course architect Christine Fraser whose unique experience, vision and voice is filling a gap in the golf industry that has been neglected for far too long. Christine grew up on a public family owned golf course in Eastern Ontario, Canada, and was a Division 1 collegiate golfer in the United States. She went on to do a masters degree in Landscape Architecture and landed her dream job in Oxford working with Martin Hawtree, one of the greatest living architects in the world. With good humour and an enlightened approach, Christine is using her design philosophy and voice to change the culture of the game of golf for the better. If I ever build a public golf course, I would want Christine to design it. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did. You can find out more about Christine on her website (https://christinefraserdesign.com) and you can also follow her on Twitter (@cggolfdesign) and Instagram (@christinefraserdesign). 28 Feb 2022 | 36. "Just Let Me Play" - The Charlie Sifford Story with Charles Sifford, Jr. | 01:32:32
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. I am your host Michael McDonald. In celebration of Black History Month in North America, my guest on this episode is Charles Sifford Jr., the eldest son of the legendary Charlie Sifford, the first black PGA tour player who paved the way for many including Tiger Woods, who described Charlie as the Grandpa he never had. All Charlie ever wanted to do was to play the game he loved against the best players in the world but he had to courageously fight every step of the way, with the loving support of his wife Rose, in the face of appalling racism from the PGA, Augusta National, and countless sponsors. This is the story of a teenager who left the South just to be able to play the game he loved and who eventually received the recognition he deserved, culminating in his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States, in a ceremony with President Obama in the White House a year before he passed away. As Charlie said in his biography, “Just Let Me Play”, and when he was allowed to play, he proved to the world that he was one of the best at golf, and like his son Charles, he was and will always be remembered as a good man; one of the best. You can find out more about Charlie Sifford by reading his biography, “Just Let Me Play”; the centenary celebration edition is available on Amazon. 14 Mar 2022 | 37. Jim Gales MBE - Founder & Chair of Scottish Disability Golf & Curling (The SDGC) and Multiple Open Champion | 00:58:36
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. I am your host Michael McDonald. My guest this week is Jim Gales, MBE. Jim is a three time Open champion, Canadian Open champion and founder and chair of Scottish Disability Golf & Curling. He is also an international curler; some would say he is a curling mercenary. Like Jim’s mother, Jim is blind. We follow Jim’s journey as an only child losing his parents at a relatively young age, to taking up golf and curling, and developing into an elite athlete at both while at the same time founding and running the biggest disability golf charity in Scotland with well over 1000 members all over the world. Yet, to my surprise, the SDGC receives absolutely no funding from the R&A, the home of golf in Scotland . If you are able to donate, please visit the SDGC website referenced in the show notes. Jim has a wonderful sense of humour and I hope to have a beer with him after a game of golf in Scotland in the not too distant future. I hope you enjoy this discussion with Jim as much as I did. You can find out more about the SDGC on its website (https://scottishdgc.org.u) and you can follow the SDGC on Twitter (@thesdgc ). Welcome to Episode 2 of the Wild Golf Podcast with Luke Willett and Michael McDonald. We are honoured to have Kendal McWade on this episode. Kendal shares the wild experience of his trip to California where he had a transformative experience. The feeling, experience and learning of the student is at the heart of Kendal's approach. As Paul McGinley has said, "It's the simplicity of Kendal's coaching that makes it so effective." Both Luke and Michael have benefited from being gently guided by Kendal into a place where learning can happen. This interview focuses much more on Kendal's own journey as a golfer and person, and less on his journey as a coach, but both are of course intertwined.

Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. Our guest today is Jasmine, but you most probably know her as The Jazzy Golfer. She is smart, energetic and courageous and has a burning desire to change the game of golf for the better by making golf more welcoming to women and girls. This desire has not diminished at all, even in the face of the recent appalling online abuse she was subjected to. The strategy and mission of getting more women and children into the game must be at the core of the strategy, culture and governance of every golf club. The Jazzy Golfer has given more thought to these issues than virtually anyone in England and what she says in this episode absolutely should be listened to by every golf club management committee, captain and general manager or secretary. We hope you enjoy this thought provoking interview as much as we did. pic.twitter.com/GvCrr5LTzI For more information on The Jazzy Golfer's work with juniors see: https://twitter.com/wildgolfpodcast

Thurlo works tirelessly and gives everything to these kids, with very limited resources, including from his own pocket. This episode will hopefully inspire each of us to do more in our communities and around the world. Thurlo is our golf community leader of the year and we hope you will be inspired by Thurlo as much as we are. We dedicate this episode to Thurlo, to the Heal the Hood Project, and to the many children that benefit from the Project. We also dedicate this episode to the memory of Sewsunker Sewgolum , or Papwa as he was known, who defeated Gary Player in the South African Open in 1965 only to have his passport and livliehood taken away from him from the evil South African apartheid regime. Let’s alld do whatever we can to give the Papwa’s of today and tomorrow the opportunities and life that they rightfully deserve.
14 Jun 2021 | 12. Dr. Emily Splichal Author of "Barefoot Strong" and Leader in Human Movement | 01:04:25
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. Our guest today is podiatrist and human movement specialist Dr. Emily Splichal. She is the author of "Barefoot Strong" and is the founder of Naboso; the first company to make proprioceptive insoles and mats designed to stimulate the nervous system and enhance movement. She believes that our experience in this world is built around sensory stimulation and our ability to process, perceive, and integrate this information effectively. Your feet play a central role in this process. Golf is a sensory sport that requires balance and spatial awareness as does moving well into old age. But in golf and in life, we have cut off our connection to the ground with cushioned shoes and socks. We hope you enjoy this episode and hope that Emily will set you on your own path to becoming barefoot strong.

05 Jul 2021 | 15. Steve Tooshkenig, Indigenous Canadian Professional Golfer and Speaker | 01:16:33
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. Our guest today is Steve Tooshkenig, an indigenous Canadian from Bkejwanong (also known as Walpole Island First Nation) in Southern Ontario. Steve is a golf professional and former touring pro who now travels across North America sharing his voice and inspiring others to “walk in a good way.” Golf was and continues to be Steve’s medicine. It has been said that “Steve is a spiritual person living a human experience” and that spirituality comes through in his words and the story that he shares. To add context to this interview, I spoke to Steve on June 23, two days after June 21, National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. Just a few weeks before the remains of 215 children were found in unmarked graves at a residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. A day after the interview, it was announced that the remains of 751 children were found at another residential school in Saskatchewan. The now defunct Catholic residential school system was run by the Canadian government and church groups from the 1800’s until the mid-1990’s and was intended to separate and assimilate indigenous children. This is just the tip of the iceberg as almost 100 residential schools were operated in Canada during this period. Earlier this month the federal government acknowledged that this was indigenous genocide (which it clearly is within the definition of genocide in the Genocide Convention), yet notwithstanding the promises made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2016 to implement all 94 Calls to Action recommended by the independent Truth and Reconciliation Commission, only a handful of those Calls to Action have been implemented so far. This is indeed Canada’s George Floyd moment. For the indigenous community it is a time for healing and it is a time for all Canadians and the rest of the World to stand with indigenous Canadians which as a minimum must start with implementing all 94 Calls to Action. We hope you enjoy this episode with Steve and “focus on the fairway” with him. Here are recent articles on residential schools in Canada: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/24/canada-hundreds-more-unmarked-graves-found-at-former-indigenous-school. Here is a link to the 94 Calls to Action recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: http://trc.ca/assets/pdf/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf. Here is a link to an article in ScoreGolf magazine, a Canadian national magazine, that profiles Steve along with Jesse Smith and Steve Styres (both Mohawk of the Six Nations): https://scoregolf.com/feature/a-nation-of-golfers/ For more information and the inspirational work that he does go to: https://www.stephentooshkenig.com. 19 Jul 2021 | 17. "Hit the Ball" with Dylan Bawden | 01:02:54
Our guest this week is Dylan Bawden, a revolutionary golf coach who provides an environment that enables his students to learn how to play the beautiful game of golf the way it is meant to be played. He is not a “quick fix” "how to" “technique” game of golf swing teacher. He is also the author of a brilliant little book called “Hit the Ball”, a fictional tale with real life characters, that exposes the historical fraud upon which “golf swing teaching” is based and shines a light on the better way that revolves around playful learning and exploration. Sounds like fun doesn’t it? I hope you enjoy this episode as we “Hit the Ball” with Dylan. 02 Aug 2021 | 19. Sandy Jamieson | 01:13:08
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. Our guest this week is Sandy Jamieson. Sandy once coached at the highest level on tour with the likes of Jarrod Lyle, Robert Allenby and Y. E. Yang. Sandy then returned to his homeland where he had one of the most prized positions in golf as the Head Professional at one of the top sand belt golf courses in Australia. But he wasn’t happy and something drew him back to where his golf journey began, on a public golf course learning the game with one club. For almost two years now, Sandy has been based out of a public nine hole golf course working exclusively with beginners, and he has has never been happier or more fulfilled as a golf professional. Sandy is making a difference with passion and good humour; he isn’t growing the game, he is saving the game of golf, a game that must continue to thrive on public courses if it is going to survive at all. With Sandy, golf is as it should be; Easy, Fun and Affordable. I hope you enjoy this time with Sandy as much as we did.

13 Sep 2021 | 21. Chloe Garner, World Long Drive Champion | 01:03:12
Welcome to our first episode of Season 2 of The Wild Golf Podcast. I am your host Michael McDonald and our guest this week is Chloe Garner, the reigning world long drive champion. Chloe is a former collegiate golfer who stopped playing after college and started competing and coaching cross-fit. She stumbled onto Long Drive watching a profile on youtube of a male cross-fit athlete competing at Long Drive. That’s where the journey began; she then found the best Long Drive coach in Bobby Peterson who believed in Chloe from the start; to becoming the Long Drive Champion four years later; with all the sweat and tears in between. Chloe is small in stature for long drive, and competing against giants , won the world championship with a drive of 347 yards. In my experience, which you can see from Chloe’s instagram account, no one strength trains harder and in a more sophisticated way than Chloe; if she ever publishes a programme for mass consumption, sign up, because it will be the best out there from someone whose speed and accomplishments are off the charts. This is a story of resilience, mental strength, and the joy of rediscovering a love for the game while on the path to becoming the best in the world. I hope you enjoy this discussion with Chloe as much as I did.
20 Sep 2021 | 22. Michael Hebron | 00:51:34
Welcome to this episode of the Wild Golf Podcast. I’m your host Michael McDonald. My guest this week is Michael Hebron, probably the most decorated golf coach in America, and in my view, one of the top two (the other knows who he is!). When I say that, I am of course defining "coach" as someone who creates an environment that enables the student to learn the game of golf. I am not defining it as an ego driven technical swing coach on the PGA tour. We discuss Michael’s journey from curious child who drove his teachers crazy, to collegiate basketball player, to athlete who played golf, to decorated technical golf swing teacher, to the coach he has become today. Someone who guides with the brain in mind; or as Michael would say, he is a "learnest". I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did.
27 Sep 2021 | 23. Jayne Storey - Part 1 | 00:40:41
Welcome to this episode of The Wild Golf Podcast. I am your host Michael McDonald. Our guest this week and next week is Jayne Storey. Jayne is a performance practice coach whose deep understanding is based on over thirty years practising and teaching formal meditation as well as several Chinese martial arts including Tai Chi. This discussion requires all of your attention, which is why I have broken it up into two bite sized episodes. But it is potentially life changing for your game. We discuss the need for a paradigm shift in how sports performance is understood. The conventional view is that to perform at golf, you just need good technique and mental toughness based on positive psychology. But we all know that a pretty swing and positive thoughts is not enough to perform under pressure. We discuss many topics including the mind-body connection, meditation, intention, visualisation, flow or the zone, and performance anxiety. The paradigm shift requires an understanding that the only way to address performance anxiety is through having a deep practice that quiets your mind under the most intense pressure; the sort of practice that Tiger learned from his mother and applied during his last victory at Augusta. Jayne is the real deal; her understanding is deep and profound and is not the sort of understanding you get from a mindfulness app or weekend course. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did.
You can find out more about Jayne on her website ( https://chi-performance.com) or by following her on Twitter @breathe_perform. If you like this episode, please tell your friends and leave a review on your favourite podcasting service. During this week when we lost Lee Elder, and at a time when countless professional golfers are quite happy to get into bed with serial human rights abusers, I would ask that you please share the story of Papwa, as it is an important story that needs to be told.
31 Jan 2022 | 34. The AFRIYEA Golf Academy in Uganda with Founder Isaiah Mwesige | 01:15:11
Happy New Year Listeners and welcome back to The Wild Golf Podcast. I am your host Michael McDonald. We start Series 3 by shining a light on the founder of the AFRIYEA Golf Academy in Uganda. His name is Isaiah Mwesige and he is one of the most impressive young men I have had the pleasure of meeting. He is humble, unselfish and resilient and above all has a passion to change the lives of others and their communities through the AFRIYEA Golf Academy. The Academy does this with a truly unique combination of golf, education and the environmental studies. The Academy is particularly focused on girls and young women, people with a disability, and children from a disadvantaged economic background. The only thing that holds the Academy back from its lofty but realistic goals is limited resources. If you can help financially, please go to the funding page of the Academy’s website; if you can help by other means by donating golf clubs or spreading the word, please get hold of Isaiah directly. All of the details are included below. The sound quality is not up to the usual high standards in a few spots, but please persevere, because Isaiah’s passion for the game of golf and how it can change lives will surely rub off on you. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did. You can find out more about the AFRIYEA Golf Academy and make a donation on its website (https://afriyeagolfacademy.com ) and you can also follow the Academy on Twitter (@AfriyeaA) and Instagram (@afriyeagolfacademy).
