28 Jan 2021 | Mindy Dutka - Professional Dog Photographer - Every Dog Has A Tale To Tell on "Why Do Pets Matter? hosted by Debra Hamilton #161 | 00:33:51
Today Mindy Dutka from Dogs I Meet is our special guest today! Mindy is a professional photographer based in Boston who helps people take pictures of their dogs for posterity. She also takes pictures of dogs at rescues and shelters so they are more adoptable. Photography had always piqued her curiosity. The way a picture preserves memory and a single snapshot can tell a story. As a New Yorker, she'd become obsessed with Humans of New York, and had an idea that she could do something similar for dogs. She decided to travel streets around the world with her camera. And, she made it her mission to capture dog tales, moment by moment, one photograph at a time. Over the past couple of years, she's documented daily life inside animal shelters and clinics – from Boston to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Mindy believes in giving back and spends time with rescue organizations all around the world photographing adoption and rescue shelters and veterinary clinics. 31 Aug 2023 | Suzanne Cannon co-Founder of VetBilling - A Flexible, Creative System Helping People To Pay For Veterinary Bills In A More Holistic Way on ”Why Do Pets Matter” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP 220 | 00:42:04
I can't wait for you to listen to this podcast with Suzanne Cannon co-founder of VetBilling.com. She has created an amazing service that can help every pet owner figure out a way to pay for their pet's veterinary care. VetBilling's flexible, client-friendly payment solutions allow veterinarian teams to deliver affordable relationship-centered care when a client may have otherwise been forced to make a different choice. Quite frankly, it blows my mind that every veterinary clinic in the country isn't using the VetBilling.com service. So, if your veterinarian isn't offering this as a payment option, we're going to tell you how to get Suzanne's information to them during the show. Why are pets important to Suzanne? In her own words -- Pets are the one way we experience unconditional love while we are alive on Earth. "I have loved animals probably since I took my first breath! Which was interesting to my parents who raised me in Los Angeles, with very few animals around our neighborhood and none in our household. But if animals were around anywhere, I'd find them and befriend them. From the time I was 3, I was obsessed with horses; I rode my first horse at 4; started taking lessons at age 6, and by then I'd gotten my first cat and dog. My connection to animals is not something I can logically explain, but they matter deeply to me as sentient beings who enrich our lives enormously, model unconditional love and acceptance, and call us to be better versions of our human selves. I cannot imagine my life without companion animals in it. I'm also an introvert, and it's often easier for me to feel more comfortable with animals than people. I feel a deep spiritual connection with animals, and I hold them in reverence as sacred beings."
More about Suzanne Cannon: Suzanne co-founded VetBilling® in 2014, after a $ 4,000 emergency vet bill awakened her to the realization that too many pet owners lack accessible options for financing the cost of veterinary care. VetBilling’s mission is to keep pets and their families together, by reducing economic euthanasia and surrenders driven by lack of access to the credit and cash reserves necessary for managing unexpected veterinary expenses. Suzanne has presented on the topic of financial access to care for Maddie’s Fund, the Access to Veterinary Care Coalition, Cornell University’s Center for Veterinary Business and Entrepreneurship, VetPartners, and the Veterinary Science Technology Program at SUNY-Delhi. She has also created two RACE-approved CE courses on managing client financial constraints in the veterinary clinical setting. Suzanne holds an M.S. in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University of Maryland and an M.A. in Jewish Studies from Baltimore Hebrew University. With a prior professional background in pastoral counseling, Suzanne is passionate about helping veterinarians and pet owners identify financial solutions in a collaborative atmosphere of emotional safety. Suzanne lives on 4 acres in the rolling countryside of Carroll County, Maryland along with her partner in life and in business, Tony Ferraro. Together they share 3 dogs - an Otterhound, Scout; a miniature schnauzer, Finch; and Sophie, a Maltese that was inherited from a relative who recently passed away. Suzanne also owns Chase, a Clydesdale/Thoroughbred cross, who is retired from foxhunting and dressage and now enjoys hacking out on wooded trails as often as possible. 29 Jan 2025 | Why Pets Matter to Me: A Look Back on My Journey | 00:34:06
This episode is a little different—I’m flipping the script and interviewing myself! After 10,000 downloads (thank you all so much!), I realized I’ve never shared my own story on Why Do Pets Matter. So today, I’m taking a step back to talk about why pets matter to me, how I got started in this work, and why I shifted from litigation to mediation to better serve pets and their people. From my first childhood dog to my lifelong passion for Irish Setters, breeding, and showing, my love for animals has always shaped my path. As an attorney, I saw firsthand how traditional legal battles weren’t always in the best interest of the pets caught in the middle. That’s why I built Hamilton Law and Mediation—to help people resolve conflicts over animals in a way that prioritizes what truly matters: the well-being of the pet. In this episode, I’ll share stories from my journey, insights into how conflict resolution can make a difference in pet-related disputes, and why mediation is such a powerful tool in everything from divorce and custody battles to contracts and neighborhood disputes. Plus, I’ll break down my Stop, Drop, and Roll method for managing conflict, the importance of transparency, and how looping can help people truly feel heard. This podcast has been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for all of you who listen, share, and support Why Do Pets Matter. If you love the show, please take a moment to rate and review—it really helps others find these important conversations. And as always, give your pets a kiss from me! 🐾💕 If you would like to watch the video version, you can do so here: https://youtu.be/a41kx2p4j_o

21 Jan 2021 | Dr. Randall Lockwood, Ph.D. - Understanding The Benefits and Risks of Animals to Humans on “Why Do Pets Matter?” with Debra Hamilton #160 | 00:35:24
Dr. Randall Lockwood is an internationally recognized expert on the connection between animal cruelty and human violence. He currently consults with the ASPCA about policy, response, and engagement regarding animal abuse since he retired from his position as Senior Vice-President with them. During this incredibly educational conversation, Randall and I talk about how pets benefit people, public health surrounding pets, and why people harm animals. We all know that while the pandemic has created a huge spike in pet adoptions -- a very good thing for both the people and pets, it has also been hard on a lot of people, both in terms of their resources and their mental health. When people are stressed or angry and they're always at home, that anger can be taken out on an animal, or a spouse, or even a child. Family pets are often ‘part of the domestic abuse cycle’ and there has been an increase in that since COVID hit the scene. Randall has done a lot of work with police agencies on issues related to dog shootings. Police departments throughout the country need to develop better training so officers can more accurately assess which dogs are life-threatening and dangerous and which are not. Most officers just aren't adequately trained to quickly and correctly assess the risks a dog poses and determine how to best handle the situation. Frequently, shooting a dog is a knee-jerk reaction by an officer not familiar with dogs. And, as police officers receive better training, the number of shootings is declining.

15 Oct 2020 | Caroline Griffin - Show Your Soft Side on Why Do Pets Matter with Debra Hamilton #156 | 00:34:26
"Only A Punk Would Hurt A Cat Or A Dog." So honored to have Caroline Griffin on this episode of "Why Do Pets Matter?" with you! Caroline was a practicing attorney for 20 years. For the past 10 years, she has been working in the animal protection arena supporting animal welfare and co-founding an anti-cruelty campaign that has become a movement - "Share Your Soft Side." Show Your Soft Side is a public service campaign that was created to change the mindset of young people who all-too-often view the maiming and torturing of defenseless cats and dogs as a sign of “toughness” or “manhood.” The campaign’s message that compassion towards animals is a sign of strength, not weakness, is one that, overnight, struck a nerve with old and young alike. Today, Show Your Soft Side, Inc. uses its reach and resources to build a better world for animals and, in doing so, build better adults. More About Caroline Griffin Caroline Griffin graduated from Loyola University of Maryland in 1984 and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1987. Ms. Griffin practiced law for 20 years until she was appointed Chair of the Mayor’s Anti-Animal Abuse Advisory Task Force in Baltimore, following the brutal burning death of a dog named Phoenix. For the past decade, she has devoted all her time to animal protection work. She is a co-founder of the anti-cruelty campaign Show Your Soft Side, serves on the Board of Directors of the Animal Welfare Institute and Days End Farm Horse Rescue, and is the Chair of the Maryland Spay Neuter Advisory Board. 26 Jan 2023 | Dawn Secord ”No Ghoulish Green Monsters Here” on ”Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP 206 | 00:34:43
Dawn Secord is our special guest today. She's an award-winning author, artist, and illustrator whose love for animals shines through in everything she does. Dawn is passionate about sharing her love of animals with children. And through her educational children's book series, she's bringing back the old-time values of reading actual books and spending quality family time together. Why do pets matter to Dawn? In her own words: "Pets matter on so many levels. They are companions, comforters, protectors, and our family members. My husband loves to say that our pets are a window into what heaven will be - unconditional love. My pets as companions allow me always to feel not alone. Even when surrounded by other people, we can still be alone. When I'm sad or happy, my pets react to my emotions. They celebrate with joy when I am happy, and if I'm unhappy, they become my comforters. It is amazing how much pets comfort us when we need it most. They protect us. Dogs bark and are considered by many sources to be a great crime deterrent. I have a cat that growls when she sees someone approaching the front door. Years ago, I read of a macaw (parrot) that attacked an intruder and saved its owner. Pets are my family members. With all they do for me, how could they be any less than a family member? Their love for me is unconditional, and my love for them is just as strong." I can't wait for you to hear all about Dawn's amazing new children's book -- "No Ghoulish Green Monsters Here." 24 Sep 2020 | Temple Grandin - World Renowned Advocate for Animals and People With Autism on "Why Do Pets Matter? with Debra Hamilton#153 | 00:32:00
I can't even begin to tell you how excited and honored I am to be sharing this next podcast interview with you. My good friend, Dr. Temple Grandin is known worldwide for her trailblazing work as a spokesperson for people with autism and her lifelong work with animal behavior. Temple is truly a living legend. She is a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and is considered one of the world’s renowned experts in two fields: animal welfare and autism. Few people ever achieve her level of expertise and fame in one area, much less two. She also wrote the foreword to my best-selling book, "Nipped in the Bud, Not in the Butt: How to Use Mediation to Resolve Conflicts over Animals" Today Temple is sharing some profound insight about what's going to happen to the dogs (and other pets) that were adopted during the COVID pandemic once that's over and we return to "life and business as usual". She also talks about how she has been able to continue teaching many of her classes online and what hasn't worked well with online education. She gives some really important tips that will help enhance any educational experience. We also talk about how pets matter to people on the autism spectrum, issues when someone is flying with emotional support animals and service animals. More About Temple Grandin Dr. Grandin is a designer of livestock handling facilities and a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Facilities she has designed are located in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. In North America, almost half of the cattle are handled in a center track restrainer system that she designed for meat plants. Curved chute and race systems she has designed for cattle are used worldwide and her writings on the flight zone and other principles of grazing animal behavior have helped many people to reduce stress on their animals during handling. She has also developed an objective scoring system for assessing the handling of cattle and pigs at meat plants. This scoring system is being used by many large corporations to improve animal welfare. Other areas of research are: cattle temperament, environmental enrichment for pigs, reducing dark cutters and bruises, bull fertility, training procedures, and effective stunning methods for cattle and pigs at meat plants. She obtained her B.A. at Franklin Pierce College and her M.S. in Animal Science at Arizona State University. Dr. Grandin received her Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Illinois in 1989. Today she teaches courses on livestock behavior and facility design at Colorado State University and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. Interviews with Dr. Grandin have been broadcast on National Public Radio and she has a 2010 TED Lecture titled "The World Needs ALL Kinds of Minds." She has also authored over 400 articles in both scientific journals and livestock periodicals on animal handling, welfare, and facility design. She is the author of "Thinking in Pictures", "Livestock Handling and Transport," "Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals," "Guide to Working with Farm Animals," and "Humane Livestock Handling." Her books "Animals in Translation" and "Animals Make Us Human" were both on the New York Times bestseller list. "Animals Make Us Human" was also on the Canadian bestseller list. Her latest book, "Calling All Minds", was a New York Times bestseller for middle school students. Her life story has also been made into an HBO movie titled "Temple Grandin", starring Claire Danes," which won seven Emmy awards and a Golden Globe. 28 Sep 2023 | Colonel Carla Bass, USAF (Ret) - Write To Influence on ”Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP 222 | 00:37:53
I am so excited to introduce everyone to Colonel Carla Bass. Carla is the force behind "Write With Influence." I met her earlier this year during an event hosted by the AKC Legislative Conference. The AKC Legislative Governmental Group brought her in to teach the legislative liaisons how to write more effectively to communicate better with local and national legislators. You are probably asking yourself, "What does this have to do with pets?" What Carla teaches will help us communicate better with our breeders, handlers, veterinarians, and even the other people in our lives. Dean Koontz Quotes: “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.” ― , A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog "The opportunity to love a dog and to treat it with kindness is an opportunity for a lost and selfish heart to be redeemed. They are powerless and innocent, and it is how we treat the humblest among us that surely determines the fate of our souls." "Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer." ========================== Carla empowers others to achieve their goals through persuasive writing. She was promoted twice to Staff Sergeant at Camp Pendleton. Her last promotion was by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen Randolph McCall Pate. Sergeant Reckless retired on November 10, 1960, and died on May 13, 1968. You can learn more about Reckless’ career and legacy in the petition here. Dr. Hamilton is the author of the popular book "Coping with Stress & Burnout as a Veterinarian." Animal lovers of all kinds will appreciate this insight into the heart of a veterinarian, plus how you get to become a veterinarian if you have considered this career choice. Juicy! More About Dr. Nadine HamiltonNadine Hamilton, veterinary-friendly psychologist and founder of the charity Love Your Pet Love Your Vet, has spent over 15 years in her specialty psychology practice working with thousands of stressed vets as well as consulting to industry associations, practice managers and owners to increase wellbeing, productivity, and retention in the workplace. Her postgraduate research at the University of Southern Queensland focussed on how key evidence-based psychological strategies could be used to decrease the risk of psychological ill-health and suicide by vets due to their day-to-day stress levels. What she found was that the best way to tackle the unique nature of veterinary stress was to combine certain psychoeducational elements. That meant specific education on the principles of positive psychology, mindfulness, and ACT along with a ‘toolkit’ of practical tasks from these fields. Combining these elements with supportive strategies such as stress management and communication tips results in a holistic intervention able to have a scientifically measurable positive impact on wellbeing. Coping with Stress and Burnout as a Veterinarian is a cost-effective highly accessible way to empower vets in their everyday work lives to use psychological knowledge and skills to combat stress, burnout, anxiety, depression and suicide. It is an easy read for individual vets both experienced and freshly minted and sits well with existing veterinary HR approaches as well as supporting face-to-face counselling and industry association mental health programs. It also provides a clear call-to-arms for veterinary industry leaders. Her book is structured in four sections. The first two provide vets with both an understanding and an acknowledgement of the uniqueness of their work and the mental health issues that come with that. A section on psychology provides a comprehensive overview of several psychological fields that assist wellbeing. The final section includes specially selected strategies for everyday use. Together, these elements result in a unique resource able to provide self-help as well as support for existing vet wellbeing programs. 22 Oct 2020 | Sheila Goffe - Why Emotional Support, Therapy and Service Dogs Matter on "Why Do Pets Matter?" with Debra Hamilton #157 | 00:32:01
Sheila Goffe, VP of Government Relations of the American Kennel Club (AKC) joins us on "Why Do Pets Matter?" to discuss the importance, capabilities and credentialing of service animals. Our dog breeds are a reflection of how humans have evolved. Dogs are very special because they are dogs -- many of them were originally purpose-bred to help their humans stay alive and thrive. They were helpers in so many ways -- they were and continue to be both a physical and emotional lifeline for their people. This is especially true for us right now while we are in the middle of this COVID pandemic. Our dogs are always happy to see you, loving companions we come home to and they are here for us 24/7 while we are spending more time home now than ever before -- they are keeping us sane and grounded. They are truly functioning as emotional support animals. The conversation about emotional support animals leads us to a bigger conversation about therapy and individually task trained service dogs. Currently, the AKC and government relations are focusing more on what is the correct and proper role of service animals and the damage that's being done to these amazing dogs because of fraudulent "emotional support" and "service dog" claims. They are doing some incredible work to ensure that all those who need to partner with a service dog are able to go out into the public confidently. American Service Dog Access Coalition (ASDAC)Fake and poorly trained Service Dogs are inundating airlines, restaurants, hotels and other access providers creating undue burdens for disabled individuals when they travel. In response, industry leaders have come together to form the American Service Dog Access Coalition(ASDAC). ASDAC prioritizes collaboration with the goal of building the broadest possible coalition of Service/Guide Dog providers and access providers to end the use of fake and poorly trained “service dogs” while simultaneously raising Service Dog training standards through the creation of an opt-in credentialing system. Unlike other attempts at Service Dog registries, the ASDAC is a stand-alone not-for-profit coalition established by industry leaders with expertise in a canine registry, technology, Service Dog training and advocacy. The ASDAC recognizes the legitimacy of a variety of sources of Service Dogs but also the issues and confusion caused by a lack of unified behavioral standards for true Service Dogs as defined by federal law. The ASDAC believes that this is an opportunity for our industry to collectively create a solution for our federal policymakers that will prevent additional policy-induced complications and ensure sustained success for service dog teams moving forward. Learn more about ASDAC credentialing here: https://warriorsresearchinstitute.org/service-dog-pass-asdac More About Sheila GoffeSheila leads the AKC’s efforts in working to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership. She oversees AKC legislative policy strategy and AKC outreach at the federal, state and local levels, works with legislators, legislative staff and regulators on key issues in canine policy, and supervises the AKC Government Relation team. She also serves as Secretary on the AKC PAC Board of Directors. Sheila joined AKC’s publications department in 2006. In 2008, she returned to her previous career in public policy/government affairs as AKC’s Director of Government Relations. Prior to working for the American Kennel Club, she was a Senior Legislative Analyst/Editor and Deputy Director of Editorial Product Development for Congressional Quarterly in Washington, DC. Previous experience included federal legislative staffing and advocacy, work as an editor and analyst for The Economist Intelligence Unit, and serving as an adjunct in Political Science/Comparative Politics at the State University of New York/Stony Brook. Sheila has completed Ph.D. coursework and research in American Politics/Public Policy, earned a Masters of Philosophy in American Politics and an MA in International Political Economy and Development at Fordham University, and is a former Fulbright Scholar, studying Political Economy and Development in Sri Lanka. Sheila breeds and shows Siberian Huskies. She is a member of the Siberian Husky Club of America, and several other specialty and all-breed kennel clubs.

Forging bonds between pets and humans is the focus of this lovely episode of Why Do Pets Matter? with guest expert Debbie Boone, who has worked with animals for a lifetime! Plus Debra and Debbie tackle some dicey behavioral topics like when pets pee in the house! Debbie has a strong background with pets and vets! Enjoy. More About Debbie Boone"My first dog was a stray Shepherd Collie mix my brother and I spotted on the side of the road one hot North Carolina summer day on the way to the farm to pick beans. We had been begging our parents for a dog to no avail. But when we saw this pup sitting quietly in the tall weeds on the corner of the road by a fence, looking lost and as if she was waiting for someone, we started really pleading. My mom, thinking it a safe bet said, ”If she is still here when we come back we will stop.” Three hours later, much to her chagrin, the pup was still there, waiting just for us! Mom stopped – a woman of her word – and we brought Sandy home, sitting in the back seat between two very excited children. We were in love immediately as she began to enthusiastically lick us and wag her entire body with joy of finding her “people”. 09 Sep 2021 | Gary Friedman - High Conflict and Pets: Mediation Is A Better Way Out on ”Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP #183 | 00:34:36
Gary Friedman, one of my dearest mentors and co-director of The Center of Understanding in Conflict joins us for this episode of "Why Do Pets Matter?"
We're talking about pets and how mediation can be exceptionally beneficial when people are in conflict over a pet, what it takes to have a successful experience with mediation, and how mediation can help people move from a right or wrong, high conflict situation to a conversation that leads them to a better resolution for their dispute while preserving their future relationship. About Gary J. FriedmanGary Friedman has been practicing law as a mediator with Mediation Law Offices in Mill Valley, California since 1976. Prior to his work as a mediator, he practiced law as a trial lawyer with Friedman and Friedman in Bridgeport, Connecticut. After several years as an advocate, he sought a new approach to resolving disputes through increasing the participation of the parties in the resolution of their differences. At that time, he and his colleague, Jack Himmelstein, began to develop the Understanding-based model that is now practiced extensively in the United States and Europe. As one of the first lawyer mediators and a primary force in the current mediation movement, he has used this model to complete over one thousand mediations in the last two decades, including numerous two-party and multi-party disputes in the commercial and non-profit realms, in the area of intellectual property, real estate, corporate, personnel, partnership formations and dissolutions, and family law. Through the Center for Mediation in Law, Gary has trained lawyers, law professors and judges in the Center’s method of mediation and a mediative approach to lawyering and collaborative practice. Since l989, he has been training lawyers, judges and psychotherapists in the United States, Europe, and Israel. He has taught courses in negotiation and mediation at Stanford University Law School and the New College of Law and has taught at Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation and at the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva. Gary has written extensively about mediation and conflict resolution and is the author of A Guide to Divorce Mediation, (Workman Publishing, l993) and is the co-author, with Jack Himmelstein, of Challenging Conflict: Mediation Through Understanding (published by the American Bar Association and Harvard’s Program on Negotiation, 2008). 29 Jun 2023 | Mindy Dutka - Community Helping Community: SOS El Arca - Playa del Sol Spay / Neuter Initiative on ”Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP 216 | 00:41:21
Community helping community. My dear friend and pet photographer extraordinaire Mindy Dutka joins us during this episode of "Why Do Pets Matter?" to discuss her recent trip to Mexico. Each day in Mexico, thousands of dogs suffer terrible neglect and abuse simply because they have no home and no one to love them. More than 40,000 homeless dogs roam the streets of Playa del Carmen alone. Even worse, most of these dogs are not fixed, unvaccinated, and suffer from lack of food, lack of shelter, and unimaginable injuries from living on the streets. Vet care is so expensive that when a family dog falls pregnant or ill, oftentimes, that family has no choice but to give the dog up. For many impoverished people, an impossible choice has to be made: to feed yourself or your pet. SOS El Arca, a Playa del Carmen-based nonprofit, has already given thousands of people another option. Hosting free monthly spay-neuter-clinics, the group has sterilized over 6500 beloved pets. Current figures estimate that just 5 years of these monthly clinics would ultimately turn the tide for the region’s animals. These clinics aren’t TNR, where strays are caught, fixed, and left on their own to fend for themselves. This is loving families struggling financially who wait in line for hours to get their pets fixed. This group is committed to sterilizing strays and long-term change, incorporating community education to teach younger generations about compassion and responsible pet ownership. But your help is desperately needed to ensure these life-saving clinics continue! Unfortunately, last year three clinics were cancelled due to a lack of funding, meaning hundreds of dogs could not be fixed. More from Henry Yampolsky on CoronavirusThere is no denial that the spread of the COVID-19 virus presents a serious threat to vulnerable individuals and an existential threat to an already strained health care system. Vulnerable individuals are not just the sick and the elderly, but are those whose immune systems are compromised in any way. In light of pollution, overexposure to antibiotics in meat and meat products, overimmunization, growing reliance on pharmaceuticals and on illicit drugs, and due to many other factors, each and every one of us, regardless of age or current state of health, is vulnerable to the virus. Each and everyone of us could also be the carrier and spread the virus to someone even more vulnerable than we are. Therefore, it is important that all of us head warnings from public heath officials, and to the extent possible, limit our in-person interactions with other people. Let us view quarantines, school closures, and event cancellations as acts of deep compassion towards our fellow beings. Let each of us gracefully accept the responsibility for the well-being of every other being and for the humanity and the planet as a whole. While these times will challenge us beyond anything we have experienced before, they also present immense opportunities. These include: opportunities to appreciate the importance of in-person connections with fellow beings; opportunities to learn and expand; opportunities to move beyond our identities, which while defining us, can also confine and limit us; opportunities to consider how, despite walls and closed borders, deeply interconnected we are. Most importantly, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go deeply within us and to experience the fact that we are humanbeings and not humandoings; that we are so much more than accumulation of food that is our body and accumulation of ideas, judgments, prejudices, conditioning, and information that is our mind. Now is the time to ask life's most profound quesions and to sit with the uncertainty and the discomfort of not knowing the answers. Asking these questions can bring a profound transformation within us. And, we need a profound transformation if we are truly to face global challenges facing us which require a profoundly different, more inclusive, more collaborative, and more nuanced understanding of the very nature of life and of who we are. So, we can react to the current crisis with fear; with avoidance; or with aggression, or we can respond with strenth; with clarity; and with compassion. The choice we make will determine the future of this planet. The time is Now! To anyone who is interested in the tools for going inward, I would like to make them as available as possible. If you would like to learn: how to meditate; how to breathe through challenging times; how to use powerful yogic practices to strengthen your immune systems; and how to use the Dis-Solving Conflict from Within process to deal with conflict and fear, please message me to schedule free on-line sessions. And, if you simply feel lonely, sad or anxious, please message me as well. I would like to support you in all ways I can! The virus epidemic can become the most precious gift - connecting us with our vulnerability, humanity, and love! Let us not waste this precious gift or squander this time. Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu (may all the sentient beings be happy and free!).

We work very closely together because we both understand that divorcing with pets is an emotional experience that often needs assistance to navigate through.
Today, we are taking a look at three common speed bumps couples often hit when divorcing with animals:
1. Humanizing the animal 2. Weaponizing the animal 3. Bargaining with the animal About Karis Nafte: Animals are not possessions, nor are they children. They fall into their own unique category that requires a delicate and considered approach when it comes to the issue of custody. We're talking about the human-animal bond and why pet insurance is so important for your pet and you. Kent explains the different kinds of pet insurance, how to shop for the best pet insurance policy for you and your pet, and what to expect when you use your pet's insurance at the vet. He also talks about how vets can help their human clients understand the value of pet insurance and some ways to effectively recommend pet insurance to their clients. About Kent Kruse, DVMAs a former practicing veterinarian, Kent recognizes that veterinarians are often stymied both ethically and economically by their client's inability to pay for required medical care because of the lack of the necessary discretionary cash. Because of the lack of funds, pets are too often euthanized, the human-animal bond ruptured, and revenue opportunities are lost. For the past 19 years, it has been Kent's passion to help veterinarians understand the value of pet health insurance, and to advise them how to evaluate available products to recommend to their clients.
06 Oct 2022 | Chris Roy - Doobert Forward on ”Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP 199 | 00:31:17
Why do pets matter to Chris Roy, Founder of Doobert.com? "Each pet has an individual personality and is uniquely different from other animals showing just how sentient they are. They matter to me because of this consciousness, awareness, and ability to love, grieve and experience joy and sorrow just like humans. They communicate to us in their own ways, and we embrace their love and grieve their loss when they are gone. They are more than pets, they are family." Chris just launched an online store called Doobert Forward, where you can shop for your pet's food, treats, and other supplies while helping your favorite rescues at the same time. A percentage of every sale is donated to the non-profit animal wellness organization of your choice! It’s easy to do, and it won't cost you a thing. While similar to Amazon Smile, Doobert donates 5% of your purchase to the organization(s) of your choice. That's substantially more than Amazon Smile gives. The store has many different products, and they're adding more distributors and products all the time! If your preferred rescue or shelter isn't listed, be sure to let them know about the store and tell them to go to Doobert.com to apply to become a partner so they can benefit from the shop or one of the other services that doobert.com offers free of charge. It's like a combination of Match.com specifically for animal shelters and rescues to find new partners, and then a volunteer Uber for getting the animals where they need to go. Chris enjoys helping provide technology solutions to some of the biggest challenges in animal rescue and is always looking for new ways to help animals and the people that care for them. He believes they are here for more than just sharing life’s joys and challenges. His pets have been some of the best teachers he's have ever known. The first to make a big impression on his young life was a beagle -- Billy Bones. They both attended obedience class together and worked so hard they won third place in their first obedience trial. Some pets and their people struggle with frustrating and sometimes destructive or even dangerous problems. Recent advancements in animal behavior are among the most exciting and important new developments in veterinary medicine. Some abnormal behaviors are a direct result of physical diseases. 03 Sep 2020 | Dr. Nadine Hamilton - - Stress and Burnout As A Veterinarian During COVID on Why Do Pets Matter? #150 | 00:33:13
Dr. Nadine Hamilton from Australia returns to "Why Do Pets Matter?" this week. COVID has created tremendous stress and challenges for veterinarians world-wide.
Nadine talks about how Australian veterinarians are coping with the pressure while providing excellent levels of care for their furry patients and their loving human owners. Burnout, split shifts, super long hours, and less than ideal working conditions are some of the biggest factors affecting vets. However, it seems that some vets are actually enjoying the contact-less interactions because their exposure to highly charged emotional clients is limited. Vets are constantly faced with having difficult communications with clients, resulting in highly charged emotional (and legal) situations that many are simply not equipped to deal with. One way veterinarians can help themselves to better cope with stress and depression is to seek help from mental health professionals outside of the veterinary world. More About Dr. Nadine Hamilton Dr. Hamilton is the author of the popular book "Coping with Stress & Burnout as a Veterinarian." Animal lovers of all kinds will appreciate this insight into the heart of a veterinarian. It is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Coping-Stress-Burnout-Veterinarian-Evidence-Based/dp/1925644197/ Nadine is a veterinary-friendly psychologist and founder of the charity Love Your Pet Love Your Vet: https://www.loveyourpetloveyourvet.com.au/ She has spent over 15 years in her specialty psychology practice working with thousands of stressed vets as well as consulting to industry associations, practice managers, and owners to increase wellbeing, productivity, and retention in the workplace. 04 Mar 2021 | Jessica Chapman: A Different Conversation and Approach To Animal Abuse on “Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton #166 | 00:39:35
On today's "Why Do Pets Matter?" Podcast we're hearing from a new voice in the animal law community, Jessica Chapman, JD.
Currently, Jessica is pursuing her LLM at Lewis & Clark Law School -- the only University in the country offering an LLM in the field of animal law. (An LLM is a secondary degree for lawyers who have achieved their JD and passed the bar exam, and who are interested in a focused, specialized course of study in a specific topic of law.) Jessica's work revolves around having a different conversation and approach to animal abuse...1. Healing abusers of their victimization and trauma from their own abuse or learned violence experiences will protect non-human animals and humans from becoming future victims. 2. Exploitation of animals and the legal abuse that occurs in industries that exploit animals -- like traumatized industrial workers -- which can manifest itself as abuse to companion animals and domestic violence. 3 We as advocates should develop relationships with individuals who the courts have convicted of abuse and with individuals who self-identify as abusers to find out which therapy techniques will help them heal from their past trauma. Condemning the individual and excluding them from therapy discussions enable the abuse to perpetuate. Experts in multiple areas should collaborate on therapeutic and rehabilitative approaches. More About Jessica: Jessica Chapman is an Animal Law LLM Candidate at Lewis & Clark Law School. She is a recipient of the Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law and Policy Domestic Scholarship. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where she double majored with a Bachelor of Arts in Slavic Languages and Literature and Native American Studies. She graduated with a Juris Doctor (cum laude) from Michigan State University College of Law. She is part of the ALLC (Animal Law Litigation Clinic) and is dedicating her legal career to the protection and representation of animals.
21 Oct 2021 | Chris Blazina, Ph.D. -- The Psychological Role Companion Animals Play In Our Lives on ”Why Do Pets Matter?” hosted by Debra Hamilton EP #188 | 00:38:42
Dr. Chris Blazina and I had a fascinating conversation about the psychological role companion animals play in our lives -- especially men's lives -- during this episode of "Why Do Pets Matter?" Through his work, Chris has found that our pets take on the role of "unwavering friend and constant companion" during our lives. And, this is particularly true for men -- especially later in life -- as their network of friends diminishes. Societal norms can sometimes make it difficult for men to become vulnerable and feel comfortable expressing how vital their pets are to them. Kudos to all the "Macho Men" and their "Teacup Pups"! This gives ample evidence of the emotional intelligence that is cultivated by owning a pet! About Dr. Chris Blazina Dr. Chris Blazina is a licensed psychologist, retired professor, and award-winning author. He has been in practice for nearly 25 years, focusing on men and their depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief & loss, relationship problems, and pet bereavement. In his work, Chris has found dogs to be an important companion and part of a male's life that cannot be found in the same way as with any human. Connect With Chris:

Microchips are only as good as the information that's on them and the scanning that's done. We're also talking about some of the vagaries of whether or not everyone scans for them.
Pets are important to Elizabeth because having a pet can help us expand our understanding of selflessness, unconditional love, partnership, compassion, passion, joy & empathy. Pets remind us that we are not alone and that the world is greater than ourselves. When it comes to microchipping your pets, Elizabeth believes that:
