Send us a text

Wherever you're listening in from today, welcome back to the Who Are You To Lead Anyway? podcast for mastering skills to navigate Leadership & Life! Episode 13!

The world of work is changing and when I think about what employees used to value in the past those things were: pay, satisfaction, working for a good boss and having a job.

Now  employees value: purposeful work, a focus on their strengths, development of their skills, ongoing career conversations that enable them to have a happy life. It's less about  "what we do" and more about why we do it and how we want to work.

I do a lot of coaching around careers and in this episode, we'll explore the following:

  • The benefits of taking charge of your career
  • The risks of relying on others in your career
  • How to set yourself up for success long term, and
  • Best practices to give yourself the upper hand.

My intention was to inspire you to put yourself in the driver's seat and get moving!

Until next week; take care of yourself and your team.

06 Jun 2023E21: Mastering Skills to Lead in Life.00:16:16

Send us a text

Today's episode is about how to navigate ambiguity and uncertainty.

🎧and explore:

  1. The difference between ambiguity and uncertainty,
  2. How and why those differences are important, and
  3. 8 Strategies to lead more skillfully and effectively

8 Strategies to navigate more skillfully:

  1. Embrace a Growth Mindset: When we acknowledge ambiguity and uncertainty are a part of life. When we can let go of perfectionism and seeking the "right answer" and embrace the discomfort of 'not knowing' we can see challenges as opportunities. When we focus on learning and growth it motivates us to seek out new perspectives, gather alternate opinions, and continuously expand our knowledge, skills and experiences.
  2. Foster Open Communication: Cultivating a culture of open, honest, transparent and clear communication can reduce confusion and misunderstandings. Create feedback channels, keep people informed, be open to their ideas, concerns, and perspectives. Why? It builds trust and credibility and reduces anxiety and stress.
  3. Develop Adaptive Decision-Making Skills: In ambiguous and uncertain situations, it's essential to make decisions based on the available information you have. Break problems down to small steps. Be flexible, open and prepared to adjust the course of action or the outcome.
  4. Create a Supportive Network: Surround yourself with mentors, trusted advisors, and a supportive network of peers or coach with experience navigating ambiguity and uncertainty. Learn from their experiences, seek guidance when needed, and leverage their expertise to make better-informed decisions.
  5. Emphasize Agility and Experimentation: Encourage a culture of agility and experimentation within the team. Embrace iterative approaches, where you try, test and learn from your actions which allows you to adapt and make course corrections more quickly.
  6. Focus on what you can control: Focusing on what you can control (your boundaries, thoughts and actions, goals you set, what you give your energy to, how you speak to yourself and how you handle challenges) can help you let go of what you can't control and lead much more effectively.
  7. Put on Your Oxygen Mask:  Attend to your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs and find ways to take care of yourself that work for you. Build your mental fitness  (check out E11), for tools you can choose from.

20 Jun 2023E23: Navigating the Pitfalls of People Pleasing. Leading with Authenticity.00:20:36

Send us a text

In this episode of the "Who Are You to Lead Anyway" podcast we discuss the concept of people-pleasing. While acknowledging the positive traits of empathy and thoughtfulness associated with being a people pleaser, there can be negative outcomes over time.

Tune in and explore these three key aspects:

  1. Why we people please and why it’s important to notice.
  2. How to assess when we are "people pleasing."
  3. 8 pitfalls of people pleasing leaders can avoid.

Being an effective leader doesn't mean trying to please everyone all the time. It means leading authentically and creating an environment where everyone can contribute and bring the best of themselves to work.

With grit & gratitude,
Cynthia Jamieson

10 Oct 2023E51 Harnessing the Power of Choice: Pathways to Personal Transformation00:41:38

Send us a text

What happens when a young woman in her early 20s, grappling with self-confidence, chooses to embrace a transformative coaching experience? And how does this journey unravel the power of choice, the art of harnessing the inner critic, and the magic of understanding one's emotions? Well, to answer these questions, we've invited Amber, a previous client and a dear friend, who's here to share her powerful journey of self-discovery.

We start off with Amber recounting her experiences with coaching, shedding light on the compelling role of word choice and effective problem-solving in her growth. We also delve into some intriguing exercises which led her to realize the potency of not making any choice. As the conversation progresses, Amber provides us with an intimate account of her struggle with self-confidence. She openly discusses how therapy and the influence of strong female leaders challenged her in unprecedented ways, eventually helping her regain her confidence. We also explore the critical concept of embracing one's uniqueness through the lens of a child's unfiltered confidence.

In the concluding part of our discussion, we tackle the importance of choosing the right people to surround oneself with and the significant impact it can have on personal development. We discuss the challenge of seeking validation from within, rather than from external sources, and emphasize the need for a strong support system. Amber also walks us through her journey of navigating her emotions and physical responses, exhibiting how understanding oneself can transform the approach to personal goals.

All in all, this episode promises an inspiring account of a woman's journey to self-discovery, illuminating the power of choice, the importance of vulnerability, and the strength found in faith in oneself.

16 Jan 2024E75: Helping New Leaders Lead Authentically00:45:56

Send us a text

Today we’re flipping things around where I'm the guest not the host!

A few months ago, I was invited to have a conversation on the Talent Management Truths Podcast hosted by the wonderful and talented Lisa Mitchell.  If you've been a listener for a while Lisa's name might ring a bell because I interviewed her in episode 18: An Inside View of Leadership Development - be sure to check it out!

Lisa works with Talent Management Leaders to embed talent programs that drive results and elevate organizational culture. She supports them through transformational coaching, consulting and training for them AND the companies they serve. I shared some of my experience in this area and we had a great conversation about helping new leaders live authentically.

So today, I invite you to tune into this episode of Talent Management Truths and discover through our discussion:

  1. The case for investing MORE in new and emerging leaders
  2. The power of “AND” thinking (vs. OR) to create positive shifts
  3. Insights into what burnout looks like in today’s workplace

I also shared parts of my leadership journey, the lessons I've learned along the way, and Lisa and I discovered some surprising connections we have in common and dropped a lot of great nuggets if I do say so myself.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed being a part of this conversation.

Cynthia

14 May 2024E92: Charting the Course of Your Leadership Transformation: From Archetypes to Action00:39:05

Send us a text

As a seasoned HR professional who took the plunge into entrepreneurship, I've learned that leadership is not just about the title; it's about the transformation. On "Who Are You to Lead Anyway?" I, Cynthia Jamieson, peel back the layers of my own metamorphosis, propelled by the wisdom of Carolyn Miss's "Archetypes: A Beginner's Guide to Your Inner-net." From the liberator's call to challenge the status quo to the storyteller's craft of sharing one's narrative, I share how these archetypes have been pivotal in reshaping myself as a leader.

Embodying leadership archetypes is no fleeting trend; it's a commitment to authentic expression in every facet of life. In this discussion, I reveal my own journey—how the liberator archetype emboldened me to dismantle limiting norms and how the storyteller allowed me to captivate and influence through vulnerability and creativity. These aren't just tales from the trenches; they're real examples, including this very podcast of showcasing the profound growth that comes with aligning one's actions with a true sense of self.

Reflecting on my path, I emphasize the vital connection between our everyday choices and our loftiest aspirations. This episode isn't solely about my transformation; it's a call to action for you to step into the archetypes that resonate with the leader you're destined to become. 28 May 2024E94: The Power of Pausing: Reflecting on Your Leadership Journey00:18:50

Send us a Text Message.

In our latest episode, I delve into the transformative power of taking breaks. Here's a glimpse of what you’ll discover:

Behind-the-Scenes Insights

Last week, a casual conversation with my husband about needing a break led to a profound realization about the true essence of "recreation." Curious? Tune in to find out more!

Debunking Common Leadership Myths

  • "If I take a break, I'll fall behind." This may feel true, but can we ever really know? Pushing ourselves too hard often leads to burnout. Consider that a break might actually bring new opportunities by refreshing your mind.
  • "My team expects me to be always available." This is often self-imposed. Your team likely wants you to take care of yourself so you can perform at your best.
  • - "My value comes from my productivity and achievements." While this may feel true in a work context, it’s crucial to remember that your worth isn’t solely tied to your output. I used to believe this myself, but now I know my value comes from who I am as a person.

Personal Reflections and Growth

I’ll share my own journey over the past six months—embracing entrepreneurship, prioritizing self-care, and achieving significant milestones. From consistent meditation practices to exciting professional achievements, it’s been a transformative period.

Reflect on your own leadership journey with these questions:

  1. What are the milestones or accomplishments you're most proud of in the last six months?
  2. How have you prioritized self-care and personal growth during this time?
  3. Are there any areas where you've challenged yourself and experienced growth?
  4. What connections or relationships have you nurtured that bring you joy and fulfillment?
  5. How have you balanced professional goals with personal well-being?

Remember, "Leadership isn't just about pushing forward—it’s also about taking the time to pause, reflect, and re-create."

Ready to pause, reflect, and recreate? Listen to the full episode and discover how taking a break can unlock new opportunities and refresh your leadership approach.

Thank you for joining me today. Remember, leadership isn't just about forging ahead—it’s also about taking the time to pause, reflect, and re-create.

Until next week, keep leading with purpose and passion.

Welcome back to "Who Are You to Lead Anyway?" I'm Cynthia Jamieson, and in today's episode, I'm excited to share some invaluable leadership insights inspired by my recent time with my granddaughters—a lively three-year-old and a precious five-month-old.

As I observed them, I couldn't help but marvel at the lessons they effortlessly teach about leadership and life. From their insatiable curiosity and openness to their authentic emotional expression and resilience, children embody qualities that can profoundly impact how we lead.

Join me as I explore how embracing authenticity and resilience, living in the moment, fostering creativity, and nurturing emotional intelligence can enhance our leadership effectiveness. I delve into practical exercises and tips, inviting you to adopt a "fascinated anthropologist" mindset in your interactions, reflect on your unique leadership strengths, and incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine.

Drawing parallels between children's natural adaptability and the demands of leadership in today's dynamic world, I emphasize the importance of building genuine relationships and cultivating adaptability within our teams.

Don't miss this opportunity to discover how the wisdom of children can enrich your leadership journey. Subscribe, share this episode with fellow leaders, and together, let's lead with curiosity, authenticity, and heart.
