08 Dec 2021 3 Things Coaches Should Invest In00:23:56

Coming to you from my new house (finally, the search is over!) I want to touch on three tips and tricks for investing in the upcoming new year. First, invest in your business training. There is a clear divide between your skills as a coach and your ability to market that to others, so make sure to separate those two! Secondly, invest in a system to get clients. Create a consistent funnel of clients that you can navigate through when you're looking for extra work or even when you look to pull back a little. Lastly, invest in relationships. Coming from the corporate world, many of those relationships are built in. In coaching we gotta put in a little extra work to find that community, but trust me, it’s so worth it!

What we are talking about…

  • We finally moved! Our home is a charming place with character that I’m excited to love with my family.
  • Huge shout out to Pure Salt Interiors for creating a beautiful aesthetic in my home! I’ve loved coaching them the past few years and the opportunity to see them in action!
  • Three things we should be investing in this year as coaches
  • 1. Invest in business training
  • You have the skills, now it’s time to market yourself! Creating a distinction between the two will allow you to reflect on your own abilities.
  • If the clients aren’t knocking at your door, don’t assume it's your coaching skills, take a moment to reflect on your own business training and marketing.
  • 2. Invest in a system to get clients
  • I’ve seen many of my students make huge strides in this over the last year!
  • Create a consistent funnel of clients and know where to get them
  • You are the boss. You get to decide when to take on extra clients or when to pull back to enjoy other parts of life. Doing this will let you work in security no matter what season you are in!
  • 3. Invest in relationships
  • The corporate world built this in, but now what?
  • Be willing to invest a little time and money to find your own community
  • This can be through classes or conferences
  • Hope holiday season, you got this!

Kelsey and Ashlyn cover motherhood stories, the difficulties of starting to write, tips and tricks during the writing process, and so much more. Sit back, relax and grab a pen and paper for this one — you’re going to want to take some notes!

What we’re talking about…

  • Ashlyn Carter is a copywriting expert who offers copywriting and marketing courses for entrepreneurs and creatives

  • Kelsey and Ashlyn discuss motherhood

  • The special moments and reminder to stay in the present with a third child

  • Ashlyn lays out three tips (or ingredients if you will) for starting the writing process:

  • 1: What do you actually want to say?

  • 2: What do people need to hear? Use research from your customer data and recycle what you already know here

  • 3: Use frameworks that already work

  • The best writers are really just the best editors

  • The first draft is usually the hardest

  • Ashlyn explains the framework she uses and how this helps her

  • Kelsey explains how she applies her “better than nothing” technique to writing

  • The two discuss the difficulties of writing when it feels like you have so much to say — good thing Ashlyn gave some tips here too!

  • Figuring out your “tough love toast”

  • Ashlyn lays out an exercise: draw out a quadrant and label each box think, said, feel, doing, then write out client examples, feedback, needs, etc. under each category. This is also a helpful tool to do while interviewing that will help you see what your clients need you to say.

  • How to cut down extra text and fluff

  • Ashlyn lays out her chicken nugget rule

  • The two discuss AI and how to leverage it for your business

Today’s episode shares inspiring stories and wisdom that these epic Black entrepreneurs have brought to the podcast 4 AMAZING guests and all of the wisdom they have brought to the podcast. Keenya Kelly, CEO and Founder of Return of the Curls and Keenya Kelly LLC & Inspirational Speaker

This conversation is a heavy one… but let me tell you -- it’s an eye opening one. Keenya has so kindly offered herself to be a bridge between White people and Black people, talk about racism, and provide ways to navigate these tricky waters.

Finding a group of women who support you is going to create consistency and help you financially succeed in your business. These women aren’t going to suddenly come into your life though. You need to search for your supporters, make an effort and reach out to women that you want to have support you, but that you also want to support in their businesses. Finding your support crew is a growth strategy and you have to prioritize it.

Find Yourself A Mentor

When you choose a mentor, you are finding the person who will help you make decisions faster in your business. Your mentor is someone who has already been there. For me, I look not only at someone’s professional life, but also what kind of personal life they have. When you discover the person you want to have as your mentor, reach out to them. Don’t wait until they become too busy or too big to mentor you.

Giving Back In Your Business - Be A Mentor

It is so important to find a way to give back in your business and one of my favorites is to be a mentor to someone starting out. Giving back, making it less about you, will give you more energy and a deeper meaning on your journey. Being a mentor will also remind you of all you have to offer since we too often forget all that we are good at.

What’s the first step you’re going to take today to grow your business?

25 Apr 2023Should You Join A Mastermind (3 Reasons NOT To & 3 Reasons To Do It NOW)00:23:03

Are you feeling unsure if a masterminds group is for you right now? Kelsey is here to help with that answer this episode by providing three principles for when you should and should not join a masterminds group. She details her pivotal experience joining a mastermind and how she has since used these groups to help her grow her business.

What we’re talking about…

  • Kelsey shares the origin of her friendship with Kathy Heller

  • Joining Kathy’s rather intimidating Masterminds group

  • How Kelsey felt supported and pushed by this group which ultimately made her invest time and money into joining a group like this at least once a year

  • Now as she leads her own mastermind group, Kelsey breaks down when to and to join a group like this

  • When it’s time

    • When there is an education gap — this can be productivity, knowledge, etc. that a simple course of video can’t teach you. Masterminds can provide you with tangible insights from people who have gone through a similar experience as you in their business.

    • When you know you have fully plateaued, despite putting towards actionable efforts. Kelsey shares how talking to and creating entrepreneur friends in these groups can lead to pivots in your business

    • If you are in need of one-on-one guidance. Kelsey shares how this kind of guidance lights a fire for her and gets her moving in her business. However, this kind of education can be more or less helpful depending on personality. Additionally, not all masterminds offer one-on-one support, so know what you’re signing up for beforehand!

  • When it’s not time

    • When you don’t plan to make your money back. Kelsey prefaces this can be somewhat controversial, but her logistical mindset wants to know the time and financial investment will have a tangible benefit on the other side.

    • When you don’t fully trust the coach/leader of the mastermind — the whole course will be built around what they value, which will inevitably guide the whole program. If possible, try to connect with the coach one-on-one beforehand to see if you have similar values and if this is a person you want guiding you through the storm.

    • You are not feeling excited and energized by this. If you're in your stretch zone and feeling like you are working towards a better version of yourself, keep it up. However, if you’re in a fire zone and burnt out, now may not be your time.

  • If a masterminds group isn’t for you right now, courses can also be a good substitute.

  • Regardless of your personalized next best step, Kelsey reminds us to just keep taking action. Do something that moves you forward!

Flash forward to present day and Kelsey shares about her exhaustion in this season of life, but reflects how she finds the motivation to “keep going” in her business.

07 Apr 2020How To Be The Most Confident Person You Know {Featuring Life Coach Susie Moore}00:51:50

Author and Life Coach, Susie Moore has not only been mentioned on Oprah.com, Forbes, but Arianna Huffington has said that Susie “helps you not only discover your own purpose but offers a practical guide to making it the driving force in your work and life.” Susie is teaching others how to do meaningful, intentional work while creating a schedule that works for you. She’s sharing her tips on scheduling leverage in your media and connecting with who you really want to connect and work with. We’re discussing the difference between stress and having stressful thoughts, what Susie’s daily schedule entails and how she’s creating content and pitching to media outlets to build her business.

It’s time to take action and kill fear!

What we’re talking about

  • Susie Moore’s Tips On Leveraging Media
  • Stress vs. Stressful Thoughts: How To Avoid Perfectionism
  • Susie Moore’s Daily Schedule & Routine

Susie Moore’s Tips On Leveraging Media

Susie’s biggest tip on how to leverage and gain media is consistency. You need to pitch yourself and your topics more than once because follow up can literally be the game changer. In addition to following up, be sure that the topics you write on are things you love that can showcase your strengths and make you stand out.  Susie says that guest posting is better that TV and podcast appearances because a post allows a reader to simply click on a link to get to you and your articles are online forever. Be consistent around the content you create and you will become the expert in your field.

Stress vs. Stressful Thoughts: How To Avoid Perfectionism

We all have times of stress, but Susie says it’s important to remember that we can avoid stressful thoughts if we avoid perfectionism. Through her interviews with Kris Jenner and Sara Blakley, Sara has heard time and time again that asking for help and asking questions is one of the biggest strengths you can have. When it comes to stress, we all have a choice between misery and uncertainty, but many choose misery  because being stuck in a job you hate is easier than the taking the leap into something new.

Susie Moore’s Daily Schedule & Routine

Susie’s schedule involves routine and a lot of free time. By creating a routine, there’s less room for self-doubt and wasting valuable time. Your schedule is what you make of it and Susie says she never uses the word “busy” to describe herself. Her morning starts with time for her own content. Susie doesn’t take meetings or calls until noon and she prioritizes time by saying no to most things. At the beginning of the year, Susie schedules her vacations before anything else and she also outsources what makes sense. In your daily schedule, remember to give yourself a finish time. For Susie, it’s 4pm and happy hour with her husband awaits her most days.

How are you putting yourself out there this week?

10 Mar 2020A Meditation Guide For The Rest Of Us {Featuring Author Justin Michael Williams00:52:31

Justin Michael Williams is an author, speaker, top 20 recording artist and has been featured by Grammy.com, Yoga Journal, Billboard.com, Wanderlust, South by Southwest to name a few. His new book, Stay Woke: A Meditation Guide For The Rest Of Us is helping people focus on their dreams and change their lives. Justin’s biggest mission is to change the lives of underprivileged children through meditation because he wants them to realize their purpose and potential is much larger than their surroundings. He’s giving us the tools to meditate in order to connect our passions and dreams in this ever-changing and complicated world. Justin presents meditation in a new way where there’s less zen and more of a way to find your passion and discover what you should be focusing on next and doing in your life.

We are modern people in a high-tech world with first world problems and a long to do list, so we need to let the quiet in and connect with ourselves.

What we’re talking about

  • What Is Meditation And How Do You Meditate?
  • Utilizing Meditation In Your Business To Create Your Vision
  • Hustling Does Not Mean Sacrificing Your Time Or Life

What Is Meditation And How Do You Meditate?

Meditation is not about relaxing. It’s about becoming more alive and creating space in our minds to receive the answers to the questions we keep asking. The practice is learning to let the storms pass through you and stay connected to a ground that is unmovable and unshakable at all times. If you’ve never meditated before and are just starting out, you might think you need to get your mind to stop thinking, but that’s not true. You want your body to be extremely comfortable. If your body is not comfortable, your brain can’t relax. Get cozy, then dive into the mind. Stillness is overrated, so feel free to move around a bit and start to notice the thoughts you’ve been pushing down. If work has been bothering you and making you anxious,  then that is something running in the background of your mind and you should allow it to come up and focus on it. This is what meditation is all about.

Utilizing Meditation In Your Business To Create Your Vision

When you create your vision and mission for your business, you should practice meditation. By meditating, you’ll be able to go deeper on what you really want for your business and go into your heart instead of your head or ego. Meditation is a practice that helps you understand how to bring your vision and mission into the world that is authentic to you and rooted in your heart.

How Meditation Can Help Children

Justin is on a mission to get kids to dream bigger, especially underprivileged kids. He is giving thousands of his books away to underprivileged kids in order to give them the tools to imagine a life that is bigger than what is around them. Justin is teaching them a tool to see there is more for their lives and giving them access to a resource inside themselves that is limitless and endless. He says we need to focus on our youth and not just those that are privileged. By teaching children how to meditate, we are showing them a way to grow from their trauma and recognize and realize their greater potential.

Do you practice meditation to realize your potential and follow your passions?

18 Feb 2020Anxiety, Business Fails, & Air Humping with Alison Faulkner of “Awesome On Demand"01:04:09

Alison Faulkner is the host of the Apple Podcast Top 100 show, Awesome with Alison, founder of Alison’s Brand School, and is empowering people to build their brand with their heart. Alison is a breath of fresh air because she isn’t afraid to be vulnerable and shares everything about her life including her kids, her business, and how to manage growth when it becomes uncomfortable. Spoiler alert...Alison ends up coaching me in this episode and puts me in the hot seat when it comes to utilizing video in my business! We are talking about how our podcasts affect listeners and what it takes to take the next step forward in your business.

It’s time we all start living an awesome life that we love!

What we’re talking about

  • Are You Taking Inspired Action Or Frantic Action?
  • Learning How To Live In The Moment
  • Caring More About What You Want & Having An Affect On One Person

Are You Taking Inspired Action Or Frantic Action?

When we are faced with a decision and need to take action, Alison recommends asking yourself if you’re taking inspired action or frantic action. Frantic actions come from a place of lack, of scarcity, of the idea that you have to be more, do more, and achieve more. Inspired action is when you ask yourself “What do i have to give? What do I want my days to look and feel like?”. You should stop and ask yourself if you are trying to take frantic action to validate something?

Learning How To Live In The Moment

As moms, Alison and I know a thing or two about Frozen and Frozen 2! Alison says our biggest life lessons can be taken from these two movies, with the biggest one being that sometimes we need to just let it go! We need to focus on enjoying each step and living in the moment instead of being focused on getting to the next big step. Part of enjoying each step is truly enjoying the hustle, but not simply hustling for the sake of it being the thing to say you’re doing. It’s important to recognize the type of work you enjoy doing because that’s the work that is going to bring you the most success.

Caring More About What You Want & Having An Affect On One Person

As podcasters, it’s easy to forget that there are truly people out there listening to what you are recording alone in your closet. Alison shares a story of a letter from a listener in which the odds seemed against her when it came to her business. The listener felt that Alison was speaking directly to her so many times, that she decided to launch her business and found success...success that she felt she owed to Alison. Changing the world is about having an effect on one single person. It’s important for us to recognize the impact we have and how much stronger that impact can be when we actually enjoy the work we do.

Are you slowing down to reflect on the work you’re doing and the life you’re living?

  • Pat Flynn’s Journey To Becoming An Entrepreneur
  • Pat’s Advice On How To Balance Parenting & Being A Business Owner
  • Pat Flynn’s 3 Steps To Building Your Dream Business

Pat Flynn’s Journey To Becoming An Entrepreneur

Pat’s journey to becoming an entrepreneur started by accident. After going to school and becoming an architect, Pat was laid off from what he thought was a secure job. Not knowing what to do or having a clear path, he started offering tips online for architecture exams he’d taken and passed. He became the expert on the LEED exam in architecture and from there launched an ebook. It was in this that he learned people will pay for convenience.

Pat’s Advice On How To Balance Parenting & Being A Business Owner

Family life is of the utmost importance to Pat and his main objective when it comes to parenting is to not only balance it, but to involve his kids. Wanting his business to bring his family together is about having more time with his family. In addition to occasionally taking his son to speaking engagements, Pat openly shares with his children why he goes on business trips and who he’s helping. He asks their permission to go on a trip and explains why such a trip is necessary. Involving his kids helps them understand why he travels.

Pat Flynn’s 3 Steps To Building Your Dream Business

Pat shares his 3 steps on how to build your dream business starting with creating moments for people in order to turn them into fans over time. Next, provide small quick wins so that when someone finds you, they can do or have something immediately. Last, open up your factory door. Don’t be afraid to show people the insides of your business and build that human connection.

When people are involved in something, they are invested.

QUOTES:

  1. “Fractional CMOs come with playbooks. They come with usually 20 plus years of experience. They're able to see your problem in all the other problems that they've encountered in the past, so they can come to solutions really quickly for you and in a really efficient manner.” - A.S.

  2. “I really love getting it started and then handing it off to others to make it their own. Understanding what I call that fractional hierarchy of need is important.” - A.S.

  3. “Deposit that will pay off dividends. When you open your eyes, you blink. It's five years later and you've been putting in those deposits. It's pretty significant.” - A.S.

  4. “Success comes from learning how to be a better manager of people, and understanding your team's strengths and weaknesses and what makes them tick.” - A.S.

  5. “You have to be able to tell the story, and you have to have the data to back it up.” - A.S.

We are getting some clear do’s and don’ts from Dr. Ben Johnston and his wife, Alyssa Rosenheck (she’s been on the podcast before!). We are getting Dr. Ben’s medical point of view after talking to numerous doctors and reading a lot of research. We are also hearing from Alyssa who is an interiors and architectural photographer and sharing her views as a business owner who is anticipating a book tour in the fall. Disclosure: Dr. Ben is an ear, nose and throat surgeon, not an epidemiologist or virologist. The views expressed in this interview are his. Please consult your doctor for opinions, your personal risks, and diagnosis.

Let’s have an honest conversation about Coronavirus!

What we’re talking about

  • Dr. Ben’s Views On Wearing A Face Mask
  •  What Does The Future Of Social Interacting Look Like?
  • Pre-Existing Conditions & The Risk of Coronavirus

Dr. Ben’s Views On Wearing A Face Mask

If you go to the grocery store, you most likely see people in face masks, but there are still some who aren’t wearing masks. There are different types of masks such as the N95 which is designed to protect physicians and medical staff. Dr. Ben says wearing a mask really depends on the setting and environment. He recommends wearing a mask especially if you are indoors and have a prolonged exposure to others. If you are outdoors, such as at a beach, then the value of a mask might not be as high as if you are indoors. The important thing to remember is that wearing a mask protects those around you. Wearing a mask is a sign of solidarity and community and you are supporting your community when you wear one.

What Does The Future Of Social Interacting Look Like?

Summer is coming up and so are 4th of July celebrations, but what will those celebrations look like? Dr. Ben discusses the risk tolerance of being infected and how that will determine what social interaction is going to look like in the months to come. With warmer weather come the hopes of a reprieve in the virus and a prediction that families and communities will want to come together again. Most likely we won’t see big city gatherings for fireworks displays though. As more testing and research on antibodies come out, we’ll know more, but right now there’s no reason to cancel everything in the future. Dr. Ben advises you should have cautious optimism, but also have a really strong Plan B. Alyssa reminds us that the opportunities could have unexpected positive results and outcomes, so don’t get discouraged.

Pre-Existing Conditions & The Risk Of Coronavirus

Alyssa is a thyroid cancer survivor, but that fact doesn’t necessarily make her high-risk for contracting Coronavirus. High risk factors include being over the age of 65 and a weakened immune system. Inflammation is playing a factor, yet research is showing that people with asthma and severe allergies appear to be less susceptible to getting it.

We’re all looking for answers...did you get some today?

14 Jan 2020The Perfect Morning Routine: Business Edition (4 Secrets To Efficiency)00:21:36

A morning routine is the one thing that can help you be more productive in your personal and professional life. If you’re wanting to be more efficient during your day, then a morning routine is the solution and you don’t have to be a morning person to have one. Whether you’re running a business or just starting one, my morning routine is going to help you move the needle in your business and it all starts with the first 15 minutes of your day. A morning routine can not only instill confidence in you, but it can help you get more done.

Mornings are a secret weapon.

What we’re talking about

  • How To Create A Morning Routine

  • The First Thing To Do When You Get Up – Celebrate Yourself

  • What Makes Or Breaks Your Productivity & How To Move The Needle In Your Business

How To Create A Morning Routine

If you’re a night owl like me, then creating a morning routine might sound not only daunting, but impossible. The secret to a creating a morning routine is to implement it in a simple 15 minute increment. Your morning routine doesn’t need to start at 5am, nor does it have to extremely long, and if you’re not a morning person, create a trigger the night before that will get you up and going. Your trigger can be your coffee being ready before you get up, your outfit ready to go and it definitely should be written down on your calendar!

The First Thing To Do When You Get Up – Celebrate Yourself

The first thing you should do every morning is celebrate yourself. You need to celebrate your wins…before you look at your emails and before you check your to do list. Take 3 minutes and write down 5 things you have accomplished in the past 24 hours. Celebrating is different than gratitude because it forces you to recognize the things you are doing well. After you’ve celebrated yourself, write down one thing that you could do that day that will not only make a difference to you, but make you feel proud when you go to bed at night.

What Makes Or Breaks Your Productivity & How To Move The Needle In Your Business

The way you will be productive and move the needle in your business is by coming from a place of abundance by recognizing all that you have already done. I love to tell people that the best salespeople will drive to a meeting and right after they get out of the car, they congratulate themselves on a fabulous parking job. Appreciating what you’re good at before tackling all you need to do is going to move the needle in your business and in your life.

Are you ready to start your morning routine?

03 Mar 2020How To Be A Minimalist One Step At A Time: Be More With Less {Featuring Courtney Carver}00:51:39

Be More With Less creator and author of minimalist fashion challenge Project 333, Courtney Carver is sharing how she went from being an advertising sales director to changing her diet, quitting her job and getting rid of most of her belongings. Courtney teaches others how to create a minimalist capsule wardrobe and the ripple effects it has on other areas of your life. She’s making it easy for people to find a place to start and has built a community to support others on the minimalist life journey. The most amazing part of Courtney’s journey is that she was diagnosed with MS in 2006, but since becoming a minimalist and cutting out “stuff”  from her life, she has had no symptoms at all.

Discover the many benefits minimizing can have on your life and your closet!

What we’re talking about

  • Discovering The Emotional Effect Minimalism Has On Your Life
  • How To Be Consistent In Maintaining Minimalism
  • Finding A Community Where You Are Not Alone On The Minimalist Journey

Discovering The Emotional Effect Minimalism Has On Your Life

Minimalism can have a profound effect on your closet and your life. By minimizing your belongings, you are able to find more focus in life. Courtney and I discuss how we spend more time with others because reducing your belongings, whether it’s clothes or clutter, takes something off your plate. You will feel more present and excited about life. Minimalism is a mindset shift and Courtney recommends you enjoy the process and not just the end result in order to avoid feeling discouraged with how long the process might take.

How To Be Consistent In Maintaining Minimalism

Spring cleaning might happen once a year, but deciding to become a minimalist is something that you have to consistently work at. Courtney says that after spring cleaning her home, she feels the need to fill the space she has just cleared. There has to be a solid reason to change for good. For Courtney it was a health scare which motivated her to do things that reduced stress in her life and to no longer feel the need to fill the clear space.

Finding A Community Where You Are Not Alone On The Minimalist Journey

Project 333 is a tell-all book about the challenges of creating a capsule minimalist wardrobe. It’s not a wardrobe prescriptive with do’s and don’ts, but a guide on how to be more with less. The book is about how to dress with 33 items or less for 3 months. Courtney has also created the Project 333 community which allows you to feel a part of something, while being surrounded by others who have the same minimalistic goals as you do. Finding people with similar beliefs gives you the opportunity to know you are not alone and to feel the feelings you have.

Are you ready to downsize and lead life as a minimalist?
