24 May 2023Are Happy Employees the Key to Productivity? New Survey Sheds Light00:27:02

It's a fact of life that we spend a significant chunk of our time at work, so it's no wonder that the level of happiness we find in our jobs plays a vital role in our overall well-being. Well, according to a recent survey by The Conference Board, it seems like there's more to this happiness factor than meets the eye.

The study revealed that employee job satisfaction has reached an all-time high, and that's some fantastic news! Who doesn't want to be happy at work, right?

One key finding that caught our attention was the correlation between job satisfaction and overall productivity. It turns out that happy employees tend to be more engaged, motivated, and productive in their roles. Makes sense, doesn't it?

When you're content and fulfilled at work, you're more likely to bring your A-game and make a real impact. Talk about a win-win situation!

In the ‘While We Were Working’ segment, Sommer and I discuss the findings of this survey, including what employees were least satisfied with.

In the ‘Consultant's Corner’, we tackle a popular topic, but one many employers don't quite know how to handle effectively. We are talking about time off policies.

Time off policies should aim to strike a balance between employee well-being and organizational productivity, but many employers tend to feel that employees are abusing this provision.

One of the first steps in fostering responsible time off usage is effective communication and managing expectations. Companies should clearly articulate their time off policies, including sick leave and personal time allowances, to all employees. Ensure that these policies are easily accessible and well-explained, leaving no room for ambiguity.

But that's not all.

Tune in to this episode for more tips on time off policies and how to set the right expectations around them.

Key Takeaways

01 Mar 2023When Remote Work Goes Too Far00:30:25

California's at it again!

The 9th court of Appeal has struck down California's law that outlawed mandatory arbitration agreements that was changed just recently.

An arbitration agreement is a clause in an employment contract where an employee and an employer agree to settle their grievances out of court instead of going on trial.

Arbitration in the workplace is an area that is still not understood by many employers and employees.

In the 'While We Were Working' section, we look at the best practices to implement arbitration agreements in employment contracts and some things you shouldn't take to arbitration.

In the ‘Consultants Corner,’ we discuss a situation from a letter we received recently. An employee goes to another country for a medical procedure. The employer wants them to return, but the employee wants to work remotely from where they are.

We have even seen some destinations try to lure remote workers into relocating. This is definitely a problem that will only become bigger with remote working. Some employers offered remote working as a benefit without realizing the full consequences of such a policy.

Tune in to hear our perspective on this issue and how to strengthen your sick and remote working policies.

Tune in to learn more!

Key Takeaways

- What are arbitration agreements (04:55)

- Are arbitration agreements good or bad for companies? (06:06)

- The big myths about arbitration (07:27)

- Things that can't go to arbitration according to federal law (10:19)

- Can you compel an employee not to work remotely from another country (17:59)

- Take a look at your time off and sick policies (22:25)

- Clarity on remote working policies (23:02)

06 Feb 2024Navigating Religious Inclusion in the Workplace + How to Handle Employee Grievances with Company00:29:03

Summary

In this episode, Joey and Sommer discuss two topics that are often considered taboo in business: religious inclusion at work and addressing negative employee sentiment. They explore the complexities of religious inclusion, the importance of cultural sensitivity, and the legal protections for religious accommodations. They also provide insights on how to handle employee grievances and foster a positive work environment.

Takeaways

  • Religious inclusion at work is becoming more important as employees seek to bring their whole selves to the workplace. Companies should create policies and practices that accommodate religious observances and foster a culture of inclusivity.
  • Legal protections exist for employees’ religious freedoms, and employers must make reasonable accommodations unless it causes undue hardship to the business.
  • Addressing negative employee sentiment requires open and honest communication. Employers should conduct one-on-one interviews to understand the root causes of dissatisfaction and work towards resolving them.
  • Consulting with HR professionals can provide guidance and support in navigating complex issues related to religious inclusion and employee grievances.

Did you know that 26% of Fortune 100 companies don't have Human Resources in their C-Suite?

That's right, over a quarter of the most successful companies in the world don't have an HR person in their top leadership team. These are the statistics released by a new BambooHR study on the state of HR leadership.

But why is that?

It's not because HR isn't important. After all, human resources are the lifeblood of any organization. And we know that having amazing people leadership should be at the core of a business strategy.

But maybe it's because HR has traditionally been seen as a support function rather than a strategic one.

But times have changed. HR is no longer just about payroll and benefits. It's about driving culture, talent management, and employee engagement. And in today's business landscape, those are key strategic imperatives.

The key takeaway from this study is that even though a quarter of Fortune 100 companies can cope without HR in the C-suite, this is not something that small and mid-sized businesses should try to do.

Tune in to hear us talk more about the stats from this study and what it means for your business.

In this episode's 'Consultant's Corner' we are exploring some of the things you need to do to have a more diverse workforce.

Often a time, companies will fill job positions through referrals. If your referral population only represents a specific demographic, it can create the unintended consequence of a less diverse workplace.

Joey and Sommer look at ways you can improve your retention and attraction of a diverse workforce through your recruitment efforts.

Tune in to learn more!

Key Takeaways

- 26 Fortune 100 companies don't have HR in the C-Suite (02:51)

- The diverse education backgrounds in HR leadership (05:09)

- Why your HR strategy needs to be at the center of your business strategy (10:08)

- Improving diversity in your workforce (11:37)

05 Apr 2023How to Handle an Easily Offended Employee in the Workplace00:30:45

We've been hearing a lot of big tech companies implementing massive layoffs to downsize their teams in preparation for tougher times.

These layoffs are brutal and partly a result of many companies hiring too quickly during the pandemic.

In the While We Were Working section, we focus on an article that outlines Meta's plan to fire middle-level management to reduce costs and hire new staff to start in the office.

One intriguing comment he made was related to engineers who initially joined the company in person and then transitioned to remote work outperforming those who started remotely.

What does this mean?

Join us in this episode as Sommer and I decode this message from Meta and what it means for smaller businesses.

In the consultant's corner, we tackle a question from one of our listeners who wanted to know how to handle a situation where an employee is easily offended at work and always finds something to be sensitive about.

The answer lies in open and honest conversations.

Open and honest conversations are essential for helping employees develop trust, respect, and understanding for one another.

When employees can communicate openly and freely with each other, they're more likely to openly discuss and address any conflict, disagreements, and issues that may arise.

They are also more likely to give the most respectful interpretation of any message.

This way, employees can come to a resolution quickly and efficiently rather than having a workplace culture where everyone is walking on eggshells.

 Key Takeaways

- Meta's plan to hire middle-level management (05:33)

- Viable alternatives to layoffs (08:25)

- How to do layoffs effectively (09:36)

- How to handle a sensitive employee (15:54)?

- Most respectful interpretation approach (16:45)

- The challenges with written communication (23:16)

19 Apr 2023The Rise of AI in HR: What You Need to Know to Stay Ahead of the Game00:29:17

As technology continues to advance, it's becoming more and more evident that the future of HR lies in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).

AI has already made significant strides in various fields, and HR is no exception. From hiring to employee retention and everything in between, AI is revolutionizing how we do business.

While it may be tempting to use pre-made templates or wizard tools, the potential risks and pitfalls are too great to ignore.

With a customized handbook that reflects your business's unique culture and values, you can ensure that your employees have the tools they need to succeed while protecting your business from potential legal issues.

Tune in as we explore these topics in this episode!

10 May 2023Innovative Strategies for Thriving in a Recession00:30:34

In a recession, small businesses must adapt and implement new strategies to stay afloat. Economic observers are predicting a potential recession driven by high inflation and supply chain issues.

While no one knows how prolonged or how severe the recession will be, we know that any economic downturn significantly impacts small businesses.

In the While We Were Working Segment of the show, Sommer and I discuss an article published by Entrepreneur.com, where several experts shared their insights on the new strategies that small businesses can use to survive a recession.

Key among their recommendations was prioritizing customer satisfaction and meeting your customers where they are at. This is the time to listen to the customer and try as much as possible to accommodate them and provide a frictionless experience.

While customer experience is important, employee experience matters too. If you don't have great employees to get you through this tough time, then you'll have a really difficult time surviving a recession.

In the Consultants Corner, we answer a question from one of our listeners who wanted to know when is the right time to hire a new employee.

Knowing the right time to hire your next employee is a critical decision for any business owner. On one hand, hiring new employees can help your business grow and take on more work. On the other hand, hiring too soon can put a strain on your finances and operations.

Tune in to this episode for our expert views on these two topics!

07 Jun 2023Walking the Tightrope: The Pros and Cons of Employers Taking a Stance on Social and Political Issues00:30:18

When it comes to employers taking positions on social and political issues, it's a topic that sparks a lot of discussion.

Some people believe that employers should take a stand because it helps attract and retain employees who share similar values, creating a sense of belonging and boosting morale.

Plus, it can also shape public perception and enhance a company's reputation, especially when it aligns with its target audience.

On the other hand, there are those who argue that companies should stay neutral and focus solely on their business interests, avoiding potential backlash or conflicts with employees and customers who hold different views.

It's a balancing act, weighing the benefits of expressing a stance on important issues against the risks and potential consequences.

In the While We Were Working Segment of the show Sommer and I argue that it's ultimately up to each employer to carefully consider their circumstances and values before deciding whether or not to take a position.

In the Consultants Corner, we tackle a topic that we have previously talked about and one that will continue coming up. That is concerns around AI technology in the workplace.

Recently, an attorney sought assistance from an AI language model, ChatGPT, to generate a legal briefing. However, things took a turn for the worse when the AI-generated response included references to nonexistent case law.

This blunder ultimately made the attorney a subject of ridicule in the legal community.

One of the primary concerns with employing AI in professional settings is the lack of accuracy and reliability. Although AI models like GPT are designed to generate coherent and contextually appropriate text, they are not foolproof.

Relying solely on AI-generated content without fact-checking or verification can lead to inaccurate information or nonexistent references that can undermine the credibility of work produced with AI assistance.

In addition to inaccuracies, we have major concerns around biases built into the tools, data privacy concerns, and much more.

Tune in as we delve deep into these issues and how best to approach AI in the workplace.

Key Takeaways

- Should employers take a stand on political and social issues? (02:35)

- What about issues relevant to their businesses (06:12)

- What do you stand for? (07:38)

- How hardline stands affects recruitment efforts (13:20)

- Why are you choosing not to take a stance? (15:44)

- Concerns around AI in the workplace (20:22)

- Trust but always verify when using AI (23:07)

- Training employees on the limitations of AI (25:31)

- AI policy in the workplace (29:02)

08 Mar 2024NYC’s AI Bias Law Isn’t Working + Demystifying Employee Ratings00:29:48

Summary In this episode, Joey Price and Sommer Ketron discuss New York City’s AI bias law and the challenges it faces in terms of enforcement and compliance. They also evaluate the use of numerical ratings in performance reviews, highlighting the pros and cons of this approach. The conversation emphasizes the importance of clear communication in performance management and offers assistance in developing effective performance rating systems.

Takeaways New York City’s AI bias law, which requires employers to audit automated employment decision tools for potential bias, has faced challenges in terms of compliance and enforcement. The law’s narrow scope and lack of awareness among employers contribute to low compliance rates. Numerical ratings in performance reviews provide clarity and a means of quantifying performance, but they can also be subjective and demotivating. Alternative approaches to performance reviews that focus on feedback and improvement without assigning numerical scores may be more effective. Clear communication and evaluation of performance rating systems are crucial for successful performance management.

31 May 2023Rethinking Hustle Culture: Prioritizing Sustainability over Burnout00:18:44

Productivity culture, sometimes referred to as hustle culture, has become ubiquitous, particularly on social media platforms. Hustle culture, characterized by a relentless focus on work and constant busyness, has become deeply ingrained in our society.

We are constantly bombarded with tips and tricks on how to work smarter, faster, and more efficiently.

By obsessing over productivity, we inadvertently program ourselves to burn out quicker. We become so fixated on optimizing our work output that we neglect self-care, rest, and nourishment. This often leads to burnout, deteriorating health, and strained relationships.

In an effort to redefine the narrative surrounding productivity and success, we are proud to introduce Whole Self Thursday, an initiative by @jumpstarthr. Whole Self Thursday is designed for people who understand that sustainable success requires a holistic approach.

In this episode, I am joined by Taryn Grey, an HR consultant here at Jumpstart: HR, LLC, to talk all about this new initiative.

It emphasizes the importance of being excellent while also being healthy and balanced. By joining this movement, you will gain valuable insights, practical tips, and a supportive community that encourages self-care, personal growth, and work-life integration.

Tune in to learn more about Whole Self Thursday and how to join the movement.

15 Mar 2023The Role of Artificial Intelligence in The Workforce00:36:32

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been transforming various industries, including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, and the workforce is no exception.

Not only does it disrupt the HR function, but it is becoming more common in traditionally human-driven processes.

To discuss this topic, Sommer and I are joined by a special guest, Alexandra Levit. She is a workforce futurist, which means somebody who looks at business and society and tries to make a determination about what has the greatest potential to cause disruption in the workforce.

One of the areas AI will transform the workforce is Talent Intelligence. AI Technology expands the opportunity for people to have more meaningful careers than we ever thought possible to a point where we can ascertain the roles that people can do based on what they've done in the past.

She has released a book, Deep Talent: How to Transform Your Organization and Empower Your Employees Through AI, a must-read for anyone looking to understand how AI platforms will impact the workforce in the coming years.

The book provides strategies and approaches that any business leader can adopt to reinvigorate their workforce.

In the Consultant corner, we tackle the topic of reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities in the workspace.

Reasonable accommodations for employees are essential to ensure that employees with disabilities are not discriminated against and are productive.

Employers should engage in an interactive process with employees to determine what accommodations are necessary and reasonable. By providing reasonable accommodations, employers can create an inclusive work environment, benefit from higher productivity from employees, and comply with the law.

One reservation that small businesses have with providing reasonable accommodations is the fear of incurring additional expenses, but it's not the case.

Tune in as we go through some simple accommodations that don't cost anything for people with ADHD that you can implement.

Key Takeaways

- Alexandra Levit's origin story (03:23)

- The role of AI in the workplace (07:04)

- The talent intelligence technology in practice (11:39)

- AI's role in diversity, inclusion, and belonging (16:16)

- Technology's role in exposing people to greater opportunities (20:21)

- Reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities (24:59)

- Remote work as an accommodation for people with ADHD (29:16)

26 Apr 2023The Top 5 Mistakes Employers Make on Form I-9 and How to Avoid Them00:35:41

Form I-9 is a crucial document that employers must fill out for each employee to verify their identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

It is important to get the documentation right and not refuse eligible documents from team members, as it could lead to legal and financial consequences for the employer.

In the While We Were Working Segment, Sommer and I discuss a recent news article that reported a Hooters Franchise recently settled with the DOJ after it refused a worker's I-9 documentation.

By law, employers must ensure that all employees, including U.S. citizens and non-citizens, are authorized to work in the United States. Form I-9 is used to verify an employee's identity and eligibility to work in the country. Employers are required to complete and retain this form for each employee.

Employers should not refuse eligible documents from team members as it could be seen as discrimination and result in legal repercussions. However, employers must ensure that the documents presented by the employee are genuine and belong to them.

Employers must also complete Form I-9 within the required timeframe and ensure that it is accurate and up-to-date. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in fines and penalties for the employer.

In the Consultants Corner, we explore the top reasons why employees quit their jobs.

It is important for employers to understand these reasons if they are to improve employee retention and workplace culture.

Conducting satisfaction surveys and exit interviews can help employers understand why employees are leaving and identify areas for improvement.

Satisfaction surveys can be used to gather employee feedback about their experiences working for the company, while exit interviews can be used to gather feedback from employees who are leaving.

Tune in to this episode and get some helpful tips on being a better leader for your team!

Key Takeaways

- Which documents should an employer ask for (03:47)

- Common mistakes with I-9s (07:22)

- Double-check before declining any documentation (11:07)

- Timeframe for completing I-9 (12:49)

29 Mar 2023How the 4-day Workweek Could Increase Employee Productivity00:30:09

The 4-day workweek is an alternative work schedule that has been gaining popularity in recent years. Advocates of this schedule posit that it increases employee productivity and job satisfaction while reducing fatigue and employee turnover.

On the surface, the idea of a four-day workweek seems too good to be true: employees get more time for leisure activities and family obligations, while employers still get the same output as a traditional five-day workweek.

Proponents of the 4-day workweek cite various benefits. For one, they claim that when employees have more time to relax outside of work, they're more energized and motivated when they return to work, making them more productive.

From an employer's perspective, the 4-day workweek can lead to greater employee retention and engagement, which can ultimately increase revenue. Research shows that when employees are happy and engaged, they are more likely to stay with a company for longer and produce more work.

Employee morale is also increased when employers show that they value their employees' well-being by offering flexible work schedules and time off.

In this episode, Sommer and I are joined by Taryn Grey, a consultant at Jumpstart-HR, to explore the different flex hour arrangements and why employers should seriously consider them.

In the Consultants Corner, we talk about performance management in the workplace.

At its core, performance management is about creating goals and expectations, managing performance against those goals, and providing feedback to employees.

It is also an opportunity for employers to improve the employee experience and set up their teams for success.

Performance management is essential for creating a successful and productive work environment.

Tune in as we share some actionable tips on improving the various aspects of performance management, such as performance review, onboarding, and employee experience.

Key Takeaways

- The case for the 4-day workweek (02:32)

- How the 5-day workweek came into being (04:54)

- 4-day work week as a productivity and retention tool (06:27)

- Practical examples of flex hour arrangements (07:12)

- Complying with state-specific overtime laws (12:01)

- Onboarding and performance reviews (15:53)

- Improving the employee experience (18:50)

- Importance of the onboarding process (20:14)

- Set up your teams for success (22:43)

- Don't be afraid to work with experts (28:46)
