09 Nov 20224. What is toxic positivity vs optimism! Why being positive ALL the time isn’t realistic or healthy (and what to do about it)00:17:50

Have you ever tried replacing negative thoughts with positive ones?

Did it work?

There’s an endless supply of posts on social media that would have you believe that the reason why negative thoughts come to mind is your fault and something to “fix”. Or, that your thoughts aren’t valid, and need to be sugar-coated.

Although well-intentioned, (and aesthetically pleasing) these types of posts are prime examples of toxic positivity.

Welcome to episode 4 of the Wellness: Rebranded podcast! In this episode, we’re delving into how culture often categorizes negative thoughts or emotions as problematic and something to be fought off- resulting in toxic positivity.

Also, we discuss what this does to your mental health, and what you can do to work through these emotions in a healthy way.

Remember, you are not your thoughts.

Drop the struggle with trying to change your thoughts, and instead, change the way you relate to your experiences.

20 Sep 202349. Top Five Tips for Healing From an Exercise-Related Injury00:18:29

Are you recovering from an injury and eager to get back to doing what you love? You CAN regain your confidence and safely resume the activities you love after an injury - but there are some concepts to consider. Healing requires thoughtful and intentional planning and care as your body heals.

Tara shares from her experience and training some things to consider if you’re on the mend from an exercise-related injury - and Elizabeth talks about living through this in real life and in real time!

Some useful general principles that Tara discusses in this conversation:

  • To stretch or not to stretch? You can’t hurt it by NOT stretching it, but you could do damage if it’s something that’s overstretched.
  • Try not to get discouraged!
  • Cold prevents swelling, and swelling inhibits healing. | Warm will always feel better, but it may not bring healing. Strain your back? Go ahead and try to relax everything with a warm, Epsom salt bath.

Then she gives us five important tips to help you heal from exercise-related injuries: (These are just a few thoughts, listen to the episode for more info…)

  1. Give it a few days. But also talk to your doctor and get them involved so they can assess and give you a game plan.
  2. Take it easy and don’t rush back into exercise. A general guideline is that your recovery time should be twice as long as the time your injury kept you out of commission. (So if you’re out of commission for 5 days, ease back into your exercise program over the next 10 days once you get started again.)
  3. When you do come back to exercise, start with small goals.
  4. Don’t ignore your pain. Listen to your body! The guideline for this is if you feel a slow-onset burning pain, it’s probably ok. If you get acute-onset stabbing pain, DON’T continue with whatever you’re doing.
  5. Get back to what you love once you’re ready! Getting hurt doesn’t mean that you should quit altogether.

Be creative! Just because you’ve injured one area of your body doesn’t mean you can’t work the rest of it. Research has shown that working on the able side of your body with actually strengthen the injured side!

16 Aug 202344. Why Is It So Hard to Stop Focusing on Weight Loss?00:33:50

It’s all around us - impossible to get around, isn’t it?

Could that be why it’s so hard to stop focusing on weight loss?

Tara and Elizabeth talk about the challenges we all face as we move away from the toxic diet culture and towards a healthier relationship with food and our bodies, and they share some tips to help you reframe your mindset.

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you’re considering moving away from looking at health solely in terms of weight loss: (These are just a few, Elizabeth shares more in the episode!)

  • What has my experience been focusing on weight loss?
  • Has it gotten me the lasting results that I’ve been looking for?
  • How has dieting impacted my mental and emotional well-being?
  • Am I experiencing a lot of stress, guilt, anxiety, and overwhelm over food and my body?
  • What impact has diet culture had in my life; how much time, money, and energy have I spent pursuing unhealthy ideals?

“You don’t have to be a dieter to be impacted by diet culture…”

- Elizabeth Harris

Some takeaways:

  • Think about the intentions behind the decisions you make toward food and your health
  • Consider the effect that diet culture may be causing in your life; how much time, money, and energy have I spent pursuing unhealthy ideals
  • How changes in behavior can impact your health - irrespective of weight loss!
  • Proactive, positive ways to respond to unnecessary and potentially harmful comments people make.
  • The fears that may be holding us back from crossing the chasm to intuitive eating - and encouragement that it’s worth the leap!

Research has shown that strength training improves energy levels, builds physical strength, boosts self-confidence, and has a positive impact on mental health. This is beneficial during menopause as it helps women regain self-confidence in their bodies and abilities, especially when they could be dealing with body-image issues or grieving over physical changes. During the discussion, Tara explains how weight training can profoundly impact women during menopause. Not only does it enhance energy levels, but it also fosters confidence and boosts mood. From Tara's professional experience, weight training stands out as the apt tool for managing menopausal symptoms, being vital for regaining physical prowess and boosting mental strength. For her, it is especially significant for women who are grappling with self-esteem or body image issues, offering a comprehensive solution for holistic and improved wellness.

We’re making it easier by explaining how to use the hunger fullness scale, giving examples, recognizing barriers to feeling your fullness, and sharing how to more effectively connect with your fullness and other eating cues.

We also talk about our own discoveries related to learning from and listening to our bodies when dealing with hunger, eating, and nutrition.

She is leading the way with an indigenous, intersectional, social & racial justice lens.

13 Sep 202348. Breaking the Silence: Talking About Suicide and Saving Lives with Lauren Jenkins00:30:57

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Today’s episode is our contribution to raising awareness and opening the conversation on one of the most pressing concerns in our society today: Suicide.

Mis-information and stigma are both reasons why suicide is still very much a conversation kept behind closed doors. It is OK to talk about suicide and it is an effective way to prevent it. Maria’s conversation with Lauren Jenkins, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, includes both anecdotal examples and research regarding mental health resources, warning signs of suicide, and how we can support others who are experiencing suicidal thoughts. These two licensed mental health professionals stress the importance of breaking the taboo around the topic of suicide, and the positive impact when holding space for others.

If you have children, being aware of your youth’s mental health struggles is important, too, considering the rise of teenage suicide rates today.

Your life matters and it is worth living!  In this episode, you’ll be encouraged to start asking others about suicide and reach out for help if you are struggling. You are not alone!

Highlights of their discussion include:

  • Does discussing suicide increase the risk for it to happen?
  • Recognizing warning signs about suicide
  • Productive ways to open the conversation with others
  • Some ways to respond if someone shares about suicidal thoughts
  • Words of wisdom and comfort to those who have lost a loved-one to suicide…

Most people don’t want to die, they want to stop living with the pain…so opening the conversation gives them the hope that you are a lifeline!

Awareness is the first step to sustainable health and liberation.

21 Dec 202210. Ready to give intuitive eating a try? 5 Intuitive eating principles you need to know to improve your relationship with food and start trusting yourself. Make peace with food series Part 200:20:52

There are so many diet culture messages around us about what to eat and how to look.

And we're often told that it's all about the numbers: calories, macros, more protein, no carbs, yes carbs, fat, fat-free… and the list goes on.

The truth is that dieting simply doesn't work, and it can even be harmful for your health and well-being.

In today’s episode, we’re continuing our intuitive eating series and talking about the first 5 intuitive eating principles.

Overall, intuitive eating is about improving your relationship with food and your body, learning to listen to your body's cues and needs, rather than relying on outside sources like diet culture or restrictive diets.

But, before we can fully practice intuitive eating and heal from the damage caused by the dieting mentality, we need to first understand the principles of having a healthy relationship with food and your body.

Cheers to rebranding wellness together!

12 Feb 2025124. Gray Hairs, Beauty Standards, and Owning Our Awesomeness: Unpacking Beauty Standards in 202500:29:18

Gray hairs with attitude, body image trolls, and the absurd pressure to look perfect—yeah, we’re going there today.

In this episode, we were having a casual, off-line conversation about beauty, aging, and societal pressures when we thought — hey, this is too good not to share! Inspired by Nelly Furtado’s candid post on body neutrality, we dive into the absurdity of beauty standards. From tweezing gray hairs to handling unsolicited advice about makeup, we explore the unrelenting pressure women face to “look the part” at every age. Spoiler alert: even people in the pictures don’t look like that!

Even though we don’t live in a society that celebrates aging, it’s not all heavy—we keep it real and funny as we tackle topics like diet culture, body criticism, and how women often unintentionally reinforce these unrealistic ideals. We also dish out three actionable ways to break the cycle and show up for each other with love, not judgment.

In this episode:

  • Nelly Furtado’s refreshing take on body neutrality
  • Maria’s war with her gray hairs (and why they seem to have superpowers)
  • How social media magnifies beauty pressure (and makes us overthink everything)
  • Tara’s take on bodybuilders who peak for just three hours and still dominate Instagram
  • The subtle ways we bash ourselves (and how to STOP IT)

18 Sep 2024103. Inner Child Healing: How Childhood Wounds Can Shape Our Adult Behaviors and Self-Esteem00:18:58

Have you ever been called a name about your physical body that you wish you weren’t being called, but decided to play it off as a joke instead of standing up for yourself?

In this episode, Tara, Maria and Elizabeth talk about the importance of identifying the true source of our problems—whether it’s a tripped breaker in the kitchen or a deeper emotional wound, such as childhood nicknames that have stuck around too long.

The episode explores topics like inner child work, emotional healing, and how our early life experiences shape our current relationships, especially with ourselves. From fitness to mental health, they discuss how understanding the "why" behind our struggles allows us to fix them at the root, rather than just treating the symptoms.

In this episode:

  • A funny story about appliances that weren't really broken—and the life lesson it taught.
  • How childhood wounds can show up in adult life, especially as "adult temper tantrums.”
  • The importance of finding the true source of emotional, mental, and physical issues.
  • Working on identifying the needs of your inner child to bring about lasting change.
  • Why we should stop commenting on appearance
  • Embracing the parts of yourself that have been criticized and turning them into sources of pride.

“Let’s stop commenting on each other’s appearance. Even if it’s a joke, it leaves a mark.”

30 Aug 202346. Five Practical Pieces of Wisdom to Bring Clarity and Enhance Emotional Well-Being - Part 100:22:03

Good mental health is foundational to how we move forward - or don’t move forward - in every other area of our lives. In this first episode of a two-part mini-series, Maria Winters gives us 5 “value bombs” that can help ensure we exercise real self-care and enhance our emotional well-being. The bullet points themselves are important because they are practical concepts and tips. However, even more importantly, during the discussion, Maria gives examples and explains why they are so important to us all, and how some of them have gotten misunderstood or even warped in our minds over time.

(If you have children - or know someone who does - forward this episode to them! You and the will discover some important tips for helping children grow in their future mental health, too.)

And come back again next week as the healing trio wraps up this important discussion.

Embrace these five important points for optimum mental health:

  1. Carefully choose what arguments are worth your energy.
  2. Other people’s needs are important - but so are yours!
  3. Once you’ve moved forward from a negative situation or mindset - leave it in the past.
  4. Put boundaries in place: you are not obligated to have a relationship with toxic family members.
  5. You were born worthy.

(Whether it’s family, friends, or your job…) those who most disrespect your boundaries

are the ones who benefit the most from you not having any!

 - Maria Winters

“Have you lost weight?” may not be the weight loss compliment you think it is.

While it may seem like an innocent gesture to make someone feel good, here’s the thing:

Diet culture has conditioned us to believe that losing weight is the best way to be accepted and valued in society.

Welcome to episode 16 of the Wellness: Rebranded podcast! In this episode, we want to talk about rethinking weight loss compliments. It’s true, we love receiving compliments every now and then but what happens when this compliment reinforces something hurtful?

We’ll share our own insights and opinions on the topic and our experiences about receiving compliments that may not necessarily improve our way of thinking.

It’s important to reflect on the message that you’re sending when you’re complimenting someone’s weight or body in general. So, if you’re ready to learn about the effects of weight loss compliments then join us for another insightful episode!

15 Nov 202357. Everything You Need to Know About Pelvic Health with Dr. Gina Hahn00:26:04

Have you heard about Pelvic Floor Therapy? This episode with Dr. Gina Hahn will get you up to date on everything you need to know about this important topic.

Gina Hahn is a Licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy and Kettlebell Coach. She is an expert in the treatment of orthopedic and pelvic floor symptoms, both acute and chronic. She has a special interest in working with women throughout the lifespan because of her own life experiences.

Gina approaches physical therapy with a coaching mindset. She provides a game plan for you — from where you are now to where you want to be, and then holds you accountable throughout your journey.

Her philosophy on physical rehabilitation is that it takes time and effort. She will design with you a treatment plan based on your symptoms and your story. She will encourage that your plan includes a routine of self-care, for example physical activity, strength training, meditation, and good sleep habits. The routine should evolve as you progress.

Through her professional experience, as well as her personal experience with sports injuries, Achilles surgery, and childbirth, she has learned that health and fitness can help us recover faster and with fewer complications. She wants that to be your experience too.

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Getting the word out about Pelvic Health Physical Therapy and its importance.
  • What causes issues with the pelvic floor, and how physical therapy can help.
  • How to know if you need pelvic floor therapy.
  • How intercourse should be pleasurable and what issues the pelvic floor can cause.
  • How to improve your pelvic floor, and when to see a doctor.

26 Feb 2025126. Menopause Myths, Body Changes & The Truth About Strength Training with Ren Jones00:47:31

Think menopause is all about suffering in silence? Think again! We’re bringing back the Menopause Man himself, Ren Jones. Ren Jones was on episode 64 of the podcast, and he dropped wisdom that had us rethinking everything. • Why eating more might actually be the key to feeling better
  • The sneaky ways diet culture and wellness culture manipulate women—especially in midlife
  • The total nonsense of “hormone balancing”

What do you think of when you hear the word “wellness”?

Do you immediately picture Instagram influencers, eliteness, or striving to be in PERFECT health using precise and regimented health plans?

There's this sort of underlying theme and obsession with pursuing health or having the “perfect” health everywhere you look these days.

As if it's within our control if we could just eat the top superfoods of the moment, stick to a popular calorie-counting diet plan, or exercise and meditate enough.

We have set out to change this narrative, and promote genuine health and self-care!

Welcome to episode 6 of the Wellness: Rebranded podcast! In this episode, we are discussing the impossible standards of the wellness industry, and the motivations behind their messaging.

Also, we chat about why we're all so passionate about presenting a different version of health and wellness that actually enhances your health.

We are encouraging you to drop the idea that there's this magic solution out there that's going to make your health better if you do everything “right”.

Remember it's more about the day-to-day, and we’re here to help guide you each step of the way!

31 May 202333. How To Be A Good Listener - And Why It Matters00:22:57

Are you tired of struggling with communication and want to improve your skills? Effective listening can improve just about every relationship. Yet it’s a skill that most of us aren’t taught. You may be familiar with these common approaches we often take when we listen:

  • Approach #1: Judging the actions of others.
  • Approach #2: “One-upping” the other person’s problems.
  • Approach #3: Giving advice.

If so, we’re here to share why they don’t work.  More importantly, we’ll suggest alternate responses that DO build connections as Maria gives us the “Cliff Notes” from her workshop “How to Listen for Real.” Let's break down the barriers to effective communication and learn the importance of listening skills together!

When we listen well, we confirm to the other person that what they're sharing is valid.

- Maria Winters

Your takeaways from the show:

  • Understand the power of validation in strengthening communication and building lasting connections.
  • Spot typical listening pitfalls that hinder meaningful conversations.
  • Assess the impact of smartphone addiction on our capacity to truly listen.
  • Discover the fascinating world of internal dialogue and the “me channel” and how they can get in the way of focused listening.
  • Embrace the importance of cultivating and maintaining exceptional listening skills for thriving relationships.
  • Did you have another takeaway you’d like to share? If so, please grab a screenshot of the show, share it on social media, and tag a friend (don’t forget to tag us, too!).

13 Dec 202362. Why You Should Ditch Tracking Your BMI00:23:29

Did you know that BMI is a deeply flawed measure of health?

In this episode, Tara, Elizabeth and Maria break down what BMI (the Body Mass Index) gets wrong — how it harms and what you can pay attention to instead.

The history behind BMI is very interesting. The Body Mass Index was created by Adolphe Quetelet, a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician, and sociologist. He devised the basis of the BMI between 1830 and 1850 as he developed what he called "social physics".

BMI does not tell us anything about health - and in fact, BMI can be very bad for mental health and create a lot of weight stigmas and shame.

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • The history of BMI.
  • Why you should ditch tracking your BMI.
  • Examples of how BMI can be harmful.
  • What you can pay attention to rather than BMI.

“Weight and health are not the same thing, and BMI is not really that useful.”

09 Apr 2025132. From Body Negativity to Body Love: Reframing How We See Ourselves00:22:38

Why is it so hard for us to love our bodies?

In this episode, we explore the pervasive body negativity women are taught from an early age—and what it takes to shift that narrative. Inspired by a moving presentation from Tara, we dive deep into how we speak about, think about, and experience our bodies. Instead of focusing on what our bodies look like, we celebrate what they do.

We share personal reflections, powerful mindset shifts, and a call to action to rewrite the script—not only for ourselves but for the next generation. It’s time to write our bodies love letters! XOXO

In this episode:

  • A quote from Kate Winslet that sets the tone for the conversation
  • How cultural messaging trains us to bond over hating our bodies
  • Reframing body appreciation to focus on function over form
  • The difference between what others see and what we feel about our bodies
  • Encouragement to speak kindly about your body in front of your children
  • How to lovingly interrupt negative body talk in your friend circles
  • A reminder that every body—yours included—is doing something incredible every day

06 Sep 202347. Five Practical Pieces of Wisdom to Bring Clarity and Enhance Emotional Well-Being - Part 200:21:32

Welcome back as we wrap up this discussion with therapist Maria Winters, who shares some important concepts to help you move forward in your emotional health journey. The healing trio digs deep into what is (and isn’t) lazy, the labels we give to ourselves or are placed on us, how we can (and can’t) influence others or navigate change, and so.much.MORE!

(If you haven’t listened to the first part of our discussion from last week, please go ahead and do that first and then join us back here!)

These concepts not only deal with mental health but can be connected to our physical well-being. Additionally, they can empower your interpersonal relationships. You’ll find that incorporating them into your wellness journey will spill over into so many areas of your life!

Embrace these five additional important points to improve your mental well-being:

  1. Your life is happening right now - stay focused and present in the moment!
  2. Not being productive is NOT the same as being lazy. Our bodies need rest…
  3. If you’re alive, it’s not never too late to   (fill in the blank)  .
  4. Your mental health diagnosis - or any kind of “diagnosis - does not define you. You are so much more than any label that has been given to you.
  5. The only person you can change is yourself.

Happiness is a practice. It’s something that’s not going to be stable or at the same level all the time… Find those activities that bring joy and then add them to your life.

Define happiness for yourself!

Just because we are swimming in the waters of diet culture every single day, doesn't mean we are destined to drown in it.

You can take control of your health AND enjoy your life in a way that uniquely suits you!

Let’s rebrand wellness together!
