Next Sara interviews Tian Connaughton, an expert knit and crochet designer, technical editor, author, and course creator. Since leaving the corporate world behind, she's built a business around creativity, craft, and helping women build their own businesses that are profitable and sustainable.
By asserting a goal-oriented attitude, Tian discusses the best ways to keep motivated after rejection and how to avoid taking disappointments personally. She details tricks to get work noticed and steps necessary to take a project from the initial idea to fully published and ready to share.
Tian has developed a brand new video course, Get Published, to help aspiring knit and crochet pattern designers navigate the world of submitting, designing, editing, publishing, and so much more. While the series was developed for all who are interested in publishing pattern designs, the initiative was created specifically to empower BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) designers to pursue publishing. With a focus of "community over competition," Tian aims to open the door and empower those at any stage of their business.

12 Jun 2020 | Crafty Podcasts to Love | 00:06:04
WeCrochet stands with the Black community working and fighting for systemic change.
WeCrochet is all about crochet, yes. But the “We” is the important part. WeCrochet centers on community and its power to lift one another up, to mentor and encourage one another (in life and in craft), and to hold each other accountable for our actions (or inactions). We’ve been silent and listening over the last couple weeks, and reflecting on the ways we need to change.
We’re a small team and a brand that’s just beginning. We commit to using this platform to amplify the voices of Black, Indigenous and People of Color, to increase partnerships with Black designers, technical editors, testers, and Black-owned businesses, to re-examine our hiring processes and the ways we fill roles on the team as we grow, and to work with our community in a constant conversation to hold ourselves accountable to these commitments.
As we continue to crochet, we must continue learning, listening, reflecting, and dismantling systemic racism. Black craft matters. Black voices matter. BLACK LIVES MATTER!
The WeCrochet Podcast will be back with a new episode next week. This week, we aim to amplify the voices of black creators and crafters. Go check out these other crafty podcasts we know you'll love!

We're sharing stories from our moms, stories about your moms, projects for moms, and more.
First up, Sara talks to her mom, Kay, the lady that got her started on her crochet journey. Grandma Anne taught Mama Kay to crochet when she was kid. Her first project was an endless granny square. Kay has continued to be crafty throughout the years and has even ventured into combining crocheting and needle felting.
Next up, Heather chats with her mom, Kathy, about all things crochet, specifically patterns and projects that have inspired. Having come from a long line of pioneer families, crafts have always been a big part of Kathy's life. Some of Kathy's Crocheted Greatest Hits according to Heather are crocheted Christmas ornament snowflakes, crocheted angel tree topper, and a crocheted vest.
We love our crochet community. We're so happy to hear about all of your moms, step-moms, aunts, grandmas and mother-figures. Our listeners called in to leave a voicemail with stories. Enjoy these great "Mom" stories from our listeners. I'm not crying, you're crying!
Lastly Producer Sarah talks to her mom about her love for crochet! As a left-handed crocheter, Cathy likes to work on projects that are kind of mindless and fun and is a big fan of plant fibers. "Crochet has always been a friend." She recalls.
We close with a word from Sara. One bright part of the weird period we're in has been having the chance to video conference with all of you and meet some of your kids. Many of you have been working hard at WeCrochet, while taking on childcare AND teaching, too. Watching all of you support your kids during these stressful times and handle everything with such grace and determination and kindness has been so inspiring. We're very lucky to work on a team of dedicated, thoughtful, and hard-working women. Happy Mother's Day to our team and to all of you! You are all doing a great job and you are so loved.
Keep crocheting, and we will too! Because WeCrochet!

27 Nov 2020 | BONUS - WarmTheLine | 00:15:31
Welcome to a very special Bonus Episode of the WeCrochet Podcast! If you’re a listener and crocheter here in the United States, you might have noticed we just wrapped up a big election season! But, voting is not over for everyone. The state of Georgia is having a run-off election for two senate seats so everyone who voted in Georgia in November will be voting again on or before January 5th.
Today we are talking to some very special guests working to inspire warmth, connection, creativity and community in voting lines across the country as well as in Georgia. Kathy Mullins and Anne Keith are two crafters that started and work for WarmTheLine, a craftivism project that aims to help share warm items to people waiting in line to vote. While the group started earlier this year and organized over 3000 handmade items to voters during the November elections, they are now focusing their efforts on the upcoming Georgia election and beyond. They are seeking donations of hats, mittens, scarfs, masks and anything that could keep people cozy and safe while in line. Items can be knit, crocheted, weaved or sewed.
If you’re in Georgia The voter registration deadline is December 7. Early voting begins on December 14. For more information about runoff elections, contact your County Registrar's Office.
Warm the Line is hoping to have projects sent by December 5th to get them out to early voters, so get to making!
We have lots of free hat, scarf, or mitten patterns available on crochet.com, and many patterns available for purchase so you can support an independent designer this season. And WarmtheLine is taking donations after December 5th as well, but the earlier you can get them in, the better.

In this episode of the WeCrochet Podcast, we're talking about new quarantine hobbies, crochet gauge, and our favorite crochet cable pattern of the Off the Beaten Path collection from WeCrochet Magazine Issue 4. First, Heather and Sara discuss their new quarantine hobbies. Sara has been getting really into baking and Heather tells about the monster hiding in her shower. Next, Sara tells Heather everything she wanted to know about crochet gauge but was afraid to ask. Gauge is the number of stitches and the number of rows in a given stitch pattern within a certain number of inches, usually 4 inches. In its simplest form, gauge is just counting and understanding how you crochet. Sara and Heather demystify when it's more important to create a gauge swatch and how to adjust your gauge to for a pattern. Finally, the two chat about the new all-cables collection in WeCrochet Magazine Issue 4. Cables are a style of crochet (or knitting) in which textures of crossing layers are achieved by rearranging stitches. This collection, Off the Beaten Path, really showcases some exquisite crochet craftship as well as serves to help welcome the cool weather of the fall. Come get inspired to take on one of these projects.
