23 Jun 2022Ep 1 | Why Hustle Culture Is Bullshit | With Melissa Mendez00:57:20

For Episode 1, my guest is Melissa Mendez, a web designer and growth marketer based in Orlando Florida.

In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Financial responsibility
2) Hustle culture
3) Naivity

The biggest lesson for me in this episode is that it's important to understand you can't do everything as a freelancer. There are skillsets that you don't have and frankly there are other people that are specialists in areas of your business you need help in. Investing in your business will prevent you from burning out by trying to do everything. Look in to softwares and tools that will make your business more efficient so you don't waste time on things you don't need to. In addition, invest in people who can help eg. Personal Assistant and possibly an accountant!

30 Jun 2022Ep 2 | Why Is It Important To Be Authentic | With Dexter Washington01:14:23

For Episode 2, my guest is Dexter Washigton, founder of Crafted Studio. In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Trying every new strategy I came across versus being myself authentically, posting and talking about the results and letting the work speak for itself.

2) Not vetting people well enough and finding not only someone with good work and strong skills -- but a finding a good personality fit that meshes with our culture.

3) Focusing too much on getting larger clients versus ones with a reasonable deadline, personality fit, and if it's a project we'd actually like to work on.

The biggest lesson from this episode is that the big jobs don't always equal the most satisfaction. There is the most red tape, the most people that have to see the final designs before the project gets signed off, marketing teams to deal with which might derail your designs. It's not all sunshine and roses when you get larger clients basically. Often, people want clients with recognisable logos on their website in order to get more large companies to hire them but is that the rabbit hole you really want to go down? As Dexter mentions, the larger clients can come with a ton of baggage for lack of a better term. Larger clients often get payments late, the timelines are unreasonable, and the list goes on and on.

07 Jul 2022Ep 3 | How To Manage Webflow Projects | With Ethan Suero01:09:21

For Episode 3, my guest is Ethan Suero,  an incredible webflow freelancer and 🐑 of the Flux community. He has given hundreds of portfolio reviews while also designing and building some rather spicy websites. This episode will be useful for anyone switching from full time job to freelance freedom (?). In today’s episode we talk about failing to communicate with clients effectively, failing to get buy in from your team, failing to do website checks before hitting launch projects.

The 3 “fails” he covers:

1) Switching to freelancing too early (not knowing client red flags
2) Mismanaging Projects
3) Failing to delegate jobs

25 Jul 2022Ep 4 | Why Setting Goals Is Essential For Success | With Jenna Manthe00:46:18

For Episode 4, my guest is Jenna Manthe is the founder of Holy Moly Creative Studio based in South Africa. She designing and develops Webflow websites that make you say ‘holy moly’.

In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Failing to communicate with clients effectively
2) Failing to get buy in from your team
3) Failing to do website checks before hitting launch projects.

The biggest lesson from this to make a homebase document! Write down your 6 month goals. Have financial goals (eg. earn x consistently) but also community goals (eg. make 5 webflow templates for the @webflow community).Refer back to this doc when feeling unmotivated or low and see how far you have come!

01 Aug 2022Ep 5 | How NOT to grow an agency | With Harry Roper00:40:14

For Episode 5, my guest is Harry Roper, CEO of Imaginary Space. The agency helps companies who are going through a seasonal slump, lack sales being generated from their website, and are looking to move their business forward.

In today’s episode we talk about:

1) Scaling too fast.
2. Agreeing to work that you can't do. Whether thats budget or just pure skills.
3. Overpromising!

The most interesting part of this episode for me was choosing to transition from freelancing to agency. It's important to freelancing and understand all the different parts of the webdesign process first. A lot of people ask whether they should start an agency or just be a solo freelancer but before asking that question, Harry advocates working out what parts of the client process do you like and dislike.

After working with a few clients, you might realise you dislike the design part of the project but like the development part. If that's the case, potentially finding someone to do the design part of projects would be necessary.

If you hire a freelancer to do this work and you get on well.

For Episode 6, my guest is Emily Lonetto, the Director Of Community at Webflow, the company which inspired this podcast.

In today’s episode we talk about pushing automations too early, using personal devices for company marketing efforts and the marketing tactics going hideously wrong.

We also discuss how to build a community, building relationships and the imminent plans for Webflow community.

The 3 “fails” she covers:

1) Pushing an automation too early
2) Making a bot that sent free money linked to her personal phone!
3) The lego marketing ploy that went hideously wrong

15 Aug 2022Ep 7 | How To Get Your First Clients | With Shais Ahmad00:37:02

For Episode 7, my guest is Shais Ahmad,  the founder of Pristine Digital. In 400 days, he has grown an agency and now has 5 employees, 20 monthly clients and 8K monthly income.

As with anyone that grows fast though, Shais has made mistakes along the way. These failures were almost catastrophic for Shais but he managed to learn from them quickly and get back on track.

The important lesson from this is episode is that in Shais' experience, cold emailing less effective than freelancer platforms. A lot of people start by cold emailing people to try and get their first client. Do you ever respond to cold outreach? Probably not. Neither does the potential client your emailing. Instead, put time in to practicing the craft. Ensure you have 3 great sites that you can show potential clients. You can even make these cloneables and share them on Webflow which may get you some attention.

Then, go to freelancer platforms and find clients that are already looking for you. Bark, Upwork, Yuno Juno

22 Aug 2022Ep 8 | How To Communicate With Clients | With Corey Moen00:55:40

For Episode 8, my guest is Corey Moen, Senior Brand designer at Webflow and Digital Lead at Shapemaker studio. In today’s episode we talk about failing to communicate with clients effectively, failing to get buy in from your team, failing to do website checks before hitting launch projects.

As we see from this episode, even at Corey’s level, he is not perfect. I find it humbling that despite having worked with clients for over a decade, he is still trying to work out how to communicate as effectively as possible with clients, manage his time well and get buy in from his team.

I think the lesson from this is that even when you are so good at Webflow that Webflow wants to hire you, failures and mistakes still happen. You are constantly learning from these failures and from this, you grow and develop. So, instead of beating yourself up when failures happen, ask yourself what can you learn from them just like Corey has.

30 Aug 2022Ep 9 | Why Focus Is Key To Getting Clients | With Felix Meens00:45:57

For Episode 9, my guest is Felix Meens,an experienced digital designer and Webflow developer based in Finland and founder of Webflix Studio.

In this episode we talk about:

  1. Failing to focus on only a key channel to get clients
  2. Failing to stay calm under pressure with clients
  3. Failing to negotiate projects as favours.

One of the biggest mistakes that Felix talked about, and that I made myself as a Webflow freelancer, is to focus on being relentlessly active on every platform and channel to get clients - Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, writing a newsletter, and more.

As Felix says, when you focus your marketing efforts on one of these channels in particular, and become more clued up on how that platform works, you are more likely to get consistent clients. The problem with trying to get clients everywhere is that you will spend hours learning the ins and outs of each platform and becoming a generalist marketer rather than just focussing on one or two platforms to get clients to be a Webflow freelancer.

20 Sep 2022Ep 11 | Dealing With Imposter Syndrome | With Kaela Williams00:46:24

For Episode 11, my guest is Kaela Williams the founder of BTB studio, the studio that creates impactful brands and websites for business growth.

Kaela’s honesty about imposter syndrome was the part of this interview that was most thought provoking for me.

At the start of your journey, it’s a struggle. You’re putting in hours in to trying to get clients, learn skills, carefully think about your processes etc and even though you’re putting in tonnes of effort, you may not feel even half as good as other Webflowers that you see on social media. It can be quite debilitating to see people post their amazing work and wins that you are not having.

The 3 failures we talk about in this episode are:

1) Creating Systems In your Business

2) Letting impostor syndrome get in the way of opportunities

3) Not building balance into your week (being a workaholic/perfectionist)

27 Sep 2022Ep 12 | How To Hire Webflowers To Build An Agency | With Julian Kreth00:52:06

For Episode 12, my guest is my guest is Julian Kreth, founder of Agentur 201720, a data driven advertising agency based in Germany.

My favourite part of this episode is about the hiring process. The hiring process is something that we haven’t talked about a lot in Webflail so far despite the fact that it seems to plague a lot of freelancers trying to transition to agency owners. Julian’s process for hiring is enlightening not just for aspiring agency owners but freelancer’s too - by ensuring that hiring process is quite long with over 7 steps, it ensures it is a good fit for the candidate and the agency.

I hope you get as much out of this episode as I did!

The 3 failures we talk about in this episode are:

1) MONEY MANAGEMENT - Founding an event management company that failed after 1 event and what this taught Julian about money and expectations with his agency

2) HANDLING CLIENTS - Giving unlimited reviews to first website clients causing endless frustration

3) HIRING PROCESS - Hiring 6 of the wrong employees in our first year of the agency before working out a hiring process that worked

For Episode 13, my guests today are Nkenna and Asmah.

In this episode we talk about:

1) Not having a website/portfolio to showcase our work early enough which meant clients couldn’t easily access our services and see how we solved similar problems for other brands

2) Not having detailed project agreements that protected us from project mismanagement, overspilling of project scope and payment structure

3) Not having a lead generation strategy to avoid the feast or famine cycle - while we were getting referrals, we weren’t putting any strategy in place to consistently stay fully booked

I’m your host, Jack Redley, a failure connoisseur and today, my guest is Maggy Monceaux. Maggy is the web designer and developer behind Easthood studio based in Toronto. She is also the co-founder at NoCode North, an inclusive community of Canadian Webflowers and NoCode enthusiasts on a mission to network, to support, and to learn with our peers.

However, Maggy wasn’t always a Webflower. Coming from a film background, she used to craft props in the film industry. Maggy says, ‘I transferred my love for building things to designing and developing websites.’

1) Failing to find the right niche or focus on the right type of work

2) Failing to say "no" more often and be more selective

3) Failing to figure out my process early on for my design + dev work

06 Dec 2022Ep 20 | How To Create A Unique Webflow Portfolio | With Hamish Duncan00:32:03

For episode 20, my guest is Hamish Duncan. At 16, he became a professional snowboarder but at 22 he broke his back forcing him to rethink his life. After finding a love of storytelling and brand identity design, Hamish eventually set up Penny Black that transforms digital products that move businesses, people and planet forward.

What I love about this episode is the power of being a generalist. Hamish’ attributes some of his success is to do with knowing a little bit about a lot of things but a real depth of knowledge about business needs. Hamish has let all these different interests - photography, wildlife, snowboarding - inspire his design aesthetic and the clients he attracts.

Don’t be a clone is Hamish’ advice - make sure you don’t squash your general interests because it is what makes you truly distinct!

13 Dec 2022Ep 21 | How To Choose Your Niche As A Webflower | With Emily Giordano00:44:56

For episode 21, my guest is Emily Giordano.

If you haven’t heard of Emily, why not? She is a Webflow legend. Emily is a huge inspiration to me personally - she is The Great Design Lead podcast host (with over 83 episodes) and aggressively researches guests (so I have gone in researching this episode by the way), she is the founder of Podwork.io for podcasters to find guests and for potential guests to find podcasts to be on, and she is an UX designer and Webflower.

The 3 failures we talk about are:

1) Wanting to be a graphic designer and realizing that wasn't what I was most passionate about

2) Having my first big project go poorly at the copywriting and project transfer stage

3) Leaving a job that wasn't right for me without having another job lined up and being scared shitless for about 3 monthsb

20 Dec 2022Ep 22 | What It Takes To Run An Award Winning Studio | With Mason Poe00:39:14

Welcome to episode 22 of Webflail. Today’s guest is legendary in the Webflow space, Mason Poe, founder of Edgar Allen Studio.

Edgar Allen won 3 awards this year at Webflow Conf including winning agency of the year - an incredible achievement and it’s easy to see why after listening to their dilligent founder in this interivew. As someone that’s been running his agency for almost 10 years, it’s clear that Mason’s experience gives him a unique insight in to Webflow as a platform and community. Mason talks about all sorts of different topics - how a rising tide lifts all the boats within the Webflow community, how anger is a gift, how Edgar Allen is working to be the tip of the spear for the enterprise market and ambitions for 2023.

The 3 failures we talk about are:

  1. I failed the third grade. it was a painful time in my life, and I spent most of my time under a desk. (literally sitting under my desk) I struggled through school but in some ways I learned a lot about perseverance. (It kind of made me better at sales)

  2. At my last job there was a time I embraced the idea of 'fail harder'... it was a nice motto but it also feed into this idea of hussle culture. Long story short I in the end did fail harder... and was fired from my last job.

  3. When I was first starting my business I was working from 4:00 AM until 11:00 at night. At one point my daughter asked my wife... "is daddy coming over today"

21 Feb 2023Ep 30 | Trusting Your Expertise As A Webflower | With Nancy Peng00:36:32

Welcome to episode 30 of Webflail!

Today's guest is Nancy Peng. I first met Nancy in 2021 when working for an agency that specialised in working with churches in the States. Quite a random job. She was then the agency’s PM - extremely organised and detail orientated. Keen to transition to working in Webflow though, she worked hard to become a really competent webflower so much so that she entered Webflow speed build challenge in 2022 getting to the final 16. Fast forward to now and she works as a Webflow designer and developer for Slam Media Lab and Adaptable. She’s bossing life, I’m so pleased to have a chance to chat to her.

The 3 failures Nancy wants to talk about are:

  1. Not willing or recognizing the signs to pivot with client projects
  2. Failing to recognize my expertise in the space
  3. Failing to ask for specific feedback

28 Feb 2023Ep 31 | Showing Compassion | With Alysha Laupama00:37:33

Ep 31 of Webflail! Today's guest is Alysha Laupama (known on Twitter as  @lyshlau )

She has worked in business development and marketing and comms for the last few years before deciding to double down on Webflow after wanting to have a more creative role.

She made N2TF in September 2022 and since then, 233 people have joined the group. With challenges, show and tells and an extremely active community, Lysh was nominated for the rising start award at webflow conf at the end of last year.

Although she has not done Webflow very long, she is someone that I think will be extremely succesful since she is insatiably curious, always gives without expecting anything in return and works really hard on her craft.

The 3 failures Lysh wants to talk about are:

  1. Rising to the emotion of someone else when they were upset and realising I have made a big mistake
  2. Leaving a job to pursue my dream as a dancer, realising it’s not what it cuts out to be and then not knowing how to get back into the dev type work I was doing before
  3. Being too much of a yes girl and spreading myself thin. Then getting overwhelmed and not achieving anything

07 Mar 2023Ep 32 | Don't Just Survive As A Freelancer | With KC Katalbas00:38:43

Ep 32 of Webflail! Today's guest is KC Katalbas (known on Twitter as  @kckatcreative)

I first came across KC first because she made a YouTube video titled ‘I made Tinder but just for fish in Webflow.’ After watching this video, KC’s highly functional, ruthlessly efficient, tech bro vibe made me want to watch more videos like ‘Turning a scrollbar into a baguette cause why not.’

Jokes aside though, Kc puts a lot of interesting content on her channel so go check it out. After 3 years of freelancing, KC had her best year yet in 2022. Her business, Artsci studio, had 22 projects and KC got to the semi finals of the speed build challenge and 2023 looks even brighter.

The 3 failures KC wants to talk about are:

  1. Your last job before you started to pursue FreelancingEverything about my very sad, very short lived mid pandemic call center job. This was the last job I had before I started to pursue Freelancing
  2. Spending the first year working alone. I barely did any outreach or networking with other freelancers or agencies, and this definitely set me back professionally and emotionally.
  3. Having a survive mindset rather than a growth mindset also for that first year. It took me a while to understand that I could build something really great out of freelancing rather than just having it be something that pays the bills

Hello and welcome to episode 34 of Webflail.

Today my guest is Diego Toda de Oliveira.

He is a brand designer and webflower based in Brasil.

He has been building websites for more than 10 years and he is probably best known for his use of motion in his websites.

As a Lottie files evangelist and a Spline expert, his portfolio website is like a trippy card scroll experience like free falling through award winning work.

He was recently an ADP List mentor and he is also a very active member of the Flow Party often on live streams helping Webflowers about pricing, portfolio creation and also helped to create the FlowParty Website!

Today, we'll talk about

Failure 1: Feeling too comfortable.

Failure 2: Live in my own bubble for too long.

Failure 3: Seeking perfection instead of accomplishment.

04 Apr 2023Ep 36 | The Truth About Niching... | With Connor Finlayson00:44:12

Hello and welcome to episode 36 of Webflail.

I’m your host, Jack and today my guest is Connor Finlayson.

You probably already Connor if you are listening to a podcast all about Webflow freelancing but for those that haven’t, Connor is a no code weapon. On his YT channel with over 11K subs, he helps people who cannot code build their own online businesses with no code tools like Webflow, Airtable and Zapier.

Connor comes from a marketing background and then came across webflow in 2018 which helped him spin up landing pages fast. He wanted to get more freelance work so instead of building a portfolio website, he built a directory for freelancers and put himself at the top. He then built this in to the Unicorn Factory, a job board for New Zealand based freelancers. Now, it’s is his main source of income.

The failures we will talk about are:

Failure 1: Not pulling the plug on my first startup Hatcher sooner

Failure 2: Splitting my time between doing Facebook ads and no-code as a freelancer

Failure 3: Taking on too many projects at once

11 Apr 2023Ep 37 | Pros And Cons Of Subscription Based Pricing | With Thorir Runarsson00:48:31

For ep 37 of Webflail, I'm speaking to Thorir Runarsson

I met Thorir for the first time in real life a few days ago at the London Webflow meetup although I have spoken to him online in a café Nero with terrible wifi before that. Thorir founded Snowhouse Studio in 2020, the icelandic powerhouse of a studio. Exceptional partnerships and client projects have helped him grow fast (a mixed blessing as you are about to find out). He now has over 9 people working with him at the studio. Not only that but he’s a father of 3 too! He is crushing it in the webflow space.

Fails we talk about in this episode:

  1. Growing too fast + hiring too quickly
  2. The Unlimited Plan Subscription did not work for our agency.
  3. Not knowing your numbers

Also, my beautiful mic wasn’t connected for this episode. anyway, my audio isn’t very good but luckily, thorir’s is and he is the man who you actually need to hear so hopefully it’s all good. Will check the mic is plugged in next episode. LOL.

18 Apr 2023Ep 38 | The Easiest Way To Find Your First Client | With Carlos Sepulveda00:43:43

Today my guest is Carlos Sepulveda!

Carlos’ background is in graphic design but transitioned to Webflow development after realising the power of the tool. More facts about carlos include that he’s Colombian, father of one, he lives in the forest, he has an epic YT channel and he’s a hardcore coffee drinker. Working full time for nicer studio based in the states.

25 Apr 2023Ep 39 | Stand By Your Price | Matías Pitters00:46:50

Hello and welcome to episode 39 of Webflail. I’m your host, Jack, and today my guest is Matias Piters.

You will have probably seen him if you’re in the Webflow Twittersphere after he did his 100 days of clones. He was a designer that came across Webflow in 2014 when he was working for a digital design agency in New Zealand. However, he went all in on webflow in 2017. In 2019, Joe Krug from Finsweet reached out and asked him to join Finsweet and he worked there for over two years before deciding to start an agency called Bookmark. He is now focussing his practice on just dev!

The failures we talk about in this episode are:

Failure No 1 - Not standing by the price I gave to a client

Failure No 2 - Not sticking to the plans I make. This is both, personal and professional life. In the professional life this can be seen as not executing and a plan I already did to gain more client.

Failure No 3 - Stepping out of a closed deal because I was afraid I couldn't deliver.

16 May 2023Ep 42 | Empowering A Revolution With Webflow | With Kabarza00:56:46

For Ep 42,  my guest is Fateh Khodamoradi (fateh jadamoradi) better known as Kabarza.

Kabaraza is a fascinating member of the Webflow space as you are about to hear in this episode. You may know him from his involvement as a coach and creator for Flux Academy. He’s a Webflow designer and developer that is also building Flowing, a plug in that ensures you have built your Webflow site correctly by helping you do quality assurance checks before publishing. However, although Kabarza is flying high now in a stable life and career, he has had a challenging journey to get here. Kabarza immigrated from Iran to Germany in 2015 by crossing 9 borders and travelled 4,5000km. We talk a little bit about this during the recording.

The failures Kabarza talks about are:

  1. Not seeing an absolute client red flag
  2. Burnout after making 2 courses and getting hit by the issues in his home country.
  3. Losing a huge client

23 May 2023Ep 43 | Why Having A Long Term Mentality Leads To Freelance Success | With Ran Segall00:36:22

For Ep 43,  my guest is Ran Segall.

I’m sure this man needs no introduction to listeners of Webflail but for my mum who listens to these episodes who maybe doesn’t know him, Ran Segall is a full stack designer, content creator and owner of an online webflow school, Flux Academy.

I first came across Ran maybe 5 years ago when I watched one of his daily vlog videos. And I became pretty obsessed. He cycled through Tel A Viv on the way to client meetings, sat in his office explaining the structure of a landing page or sharing behind the scenes of his startup, Prospero. I think I and of lot people connected with Ran because he was curious, enigmatic and exceptionally clear at explaining complicated things in a simple manner.

This helps to explain the insane success of Flux Academy when it was first launched and planted the seed for the success to come. Flux eventually became the core focus and he has now built a team around him for the academy to be fully fledged and robust business.

The failures we talk about in this episode are:

  1. not releasing original project files to client
  2. working with friends and family without clear boundaries
  3. working without a clear design brief

30 May 2023Ep 44 | Avoiding Dreaded 'Scope Creep' | With Max Joles00:47:02

For Ep 44, my guest is Max Joles.

Max is the head of dev for 8020 agency in the states and also writes a newsletter about his hometown of Maine called the 'Maine Outsider' - a roundup of local outdoor events. He also set up 'Made by Adventur'e - a company to highlight travel as a force for good. I hadn't met Max before this interview, but from scrolling through his social media and website, there are obvious things about his life: his love of problem solving and the great outdoors. I think people that are both good at working through analytical problems but also have love the freedom and wilderness of nature are particularly potent because they can both zoom in on problems but also zoom out to have a wider perspective.

Today, we’ll dig in to Max’s failures:

  1. Forgetting he has a body

06 Jun 2023Ep 45 | If You Don't Ask, You Don't Get | With Ankita Gupta00:41:38

For Ep 45, my guest is Ankita Gupta.

Ankita is a freelance webflow developer based in Delhi, India. You may have seen her in the semi-final of the speed build challenge or speaking at the Floxies community. She is an avid no code fan, and writes a newsletter called Trail Of Thoughts, all about UI/UX design, nocode and ChatGPT. They’re filled with diagrams and clear, analytical thinking which seems to be Ankita’s great skill.

The failures we talk about in this episode are:

  1. Following the herd mentality
  2. Chasing every new shiny object in the market

Jamie is the founder of Virago which specialises in webflow development for creative agencies and independent designers. Her team is now 5 people including Jamie and the agency is a professional partner. Virago has worked on some killer projects so far including TEDx Miami, Caviar Caspia and Juice Pharma. Basically, Jamie is killing it but was it always this way?

The 3 failures we will discuss today are:

  1. Starting out as a Wordpress designer and developer and taking on ridiculously low paying projects.
  2. Working 12+ hours a day on all the wrong things after starting my agency.
  3. Hitting what I thought was my 10 year monthly revenue target and feeling nothing but stress.

Fungi comes from a science background with a Batchelor of Science in Human Anatomy and Physiology & Biochemistry. She initially became interested in design after watching a Photoshop tutorial and from then she was hooked, going down the rabbit hole of design to learn different softwares and grow as a designer. She found her brand voice and design style when she tied her background from Harare in Zimbabwe to her Webflow work. Her style is heavily influenced by Afrikan culture: patterns, historic writings, graphic symbols and colour as a form of visual and global communication.

30 Jun 2023Ep 48 | How To Choose Which Clients To Work With | With Alex & Balerein from Tambien00:56:16

For Ep 48 of Webflail, my guests are Alex Tourgis & Balerein Aranda Arestizabal.

I met these 2 for the first time at their incredible event in Barcelona where they had some big name speakers like Emily Lonetto, Maguire, and Tambien studio presented some of their beautiful work - you’ve probably seen it in the Webflow space. It’s characterised by beautiful, large images, gsap animations, and large sans serif fonts. I recommend checking out their beautiful work on the Tambien studio website after this episode! Along with Mael Ruffini, their studio punches well above their weight both in quality of work, size of clients and content output. But their journey to building their studio has not been linear as you’re about to hear.

The failures we talk about in this episode are:

1) Failing to follow your instinct rather than your bank account

2) Rushing the process and trying to grow too fast

3) Failing to balance work and life

Today, my guest is Dylan Harrocks. I met Dylan for the first time in Barcelona a few weeks ago. The power of twitter - crazy. Anyway, since then, I joined the same co-working space as him and we’ve talked about the power of his subscription based pricing model for his agency, building a network and pushing through barriers. He is an email marketing genius and I feel like this is something that we will be talking about today too. But although Nexu Creative has grown fast, he has had his fair share of failure.

11 Jul 2023Ep 50 | The Hiring Formula: How to Build a Million-Dollar Business Culture | With Joe Krug00:59:35

Welcome to episode 50 of Webflail with Joe Krug

If you’re listening to this podcast, you probably already know Joe and the incredible things he has done not just for him and his team, but for the Webflow community as well. But just in case you don't know him and his work let's have a recap...

He started Finsweet web agency in January 2016 with no development knowledge and no money but through determination and hard work, he grew in confidence after getting results for clients and things accelerated fast. In 2017, Joe hired 2 devs and  started motoring. As the agency grew, he started a YouTube channel in 2019 and by the end of 2019 had 12 employees. In early 2020, he turned down a $1.24 million offer to sell Finsweet and has since gone on to create the F’in sweet community, cloneables, Client First Build Strategy, Attributes, Finsweet Chrome Extension, acquired Wized. It’s INSANE.

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

  1. A startup that taught Joe a lot about business
  2. Failed cold calls for website clients
  3. Hiring the wrong people early on in Finsweet

Thanks so much for listening to 50 episodes of Webflail. We can't wait to launch Season 2 of the Podcast soon...

18 Jul 2023Rerun | Ep 18 | From Six Figures Of Debt To A Thriving New Business | With Yaya00:56:02

Welcome (once again) to Episode 18 of Webflail with Yannick Lorenz (also known as Yaya).

At Webflail HQ, we felt that this episode has been slept on for too long so here it is again. Yaya provides brilliant insights into the world of agency ownership and the enormous pressures which come from not having systems and processes.

Three years ago, he co-founded the creative studio 'Shadow'. Believing it was the way to success and the life he wanted, he hired staff quickly, made up systems and processes as he went along, and said yes to client requests to satisfy their demands. The combination of internal and external pressures almost forced Yaya to close Shadow but he managed to turn it around.

Now, he works on both Shadow and Crème which launched this year, curating opportunities for the world's top Webflow talent.

The three failures Yaya talks about in this episode are:

1. Failing to spot that he was hiring and growing his agency too fast
2. Failing to prevent debts, loans and too much risk
3. Failing to put in place processes and systems

22 Aug 2023Ep 51 | 3 Days To Find A Job Or Get Deported... Turning Near Disaster Into Start-Up Success | With Chisom Igwe01:07:52

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Season 2 and Episode 51 of Webflail with Chisom Igwe

Chisom first caught my attention when she made the most powerful and hilarious Webflow community grant video I have ever seen. In the style of the Webflow university videos, she applies for a community grant with wit and charm. But the fact she can do this is no surprise. She has a YouTube channel where she does tech interviews, career videos like where she talks about her experience as a software engineer at Reddit and about her time living in Ireland. Cheesom is building a startup, power to the creators, alongside her full time job working at Vev, a Webflow competitor!

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

  1. Not getting a return offer from Facebook
  2. Not being able to raise the funds to complete her second degree from college
  3. Not being patient enough with her parents

Thanks for the amazing support over Season 1 - 10,000 listens was such a great way to finish it!

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 52 of Webflail with Ilja van Eck

You may have seen his award winning work floating around the Twittersphere because he’s pumping out award winning work monthly it seems. Nominated for independent of the year, part of Okaydevs and having worked with the likes of studios such as Holographic and Off Brand, he’s had a hell of a Webflow career already at only 21 years old.

His new YouTube Channel has already amassed 1000 subscribers with only 5 videos so far which is wild. His chilled, down to earth dutch vibes are ideal for calmly teaching us mere mortals how to use GSap and more. Recently, he started his own no-code community in the Netherlands too. But has success come to Ilja without bumps in the road? Of course not.

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

  1. Saying yes to a branding project without asking enough questions.
  2. Not saying no, and therefore burning out a bit
  3. Taking on personal projects without actually having the time for them

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 53 of Webflail with Maël Ruffini

You may have met him in Barcelona for the Tambien Studio meet-up. Tambien studio presented some of their beautiful work - you’ve probably seen it in the Webflow space.

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

  1. The failure to not be able to focus on one thing at a time.
  2. Not having enough self-confidence.
  3. The inability to create content consistently and be visible on social media.

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 54 of Webflail with Lucie Le Liard

I met Lucie in a online coaching course a few years ago and then for the first time in real life in Bordeaux a few months ago! She’s the founder of Positive Impact Studio which works with mission mission-driven startups from early stages to more established. With an honourable mention for that website, she’s grown in design and has worked with all sorts of mission driven start ups. Lucie is insanely passionate about what she does but what I love about Lucie is that she is also keen to build an agency while also living and working abroad like living in Central America for a year. Lucie goes the extra mile for clients - she is one of the hardest working people I know and I’m excited to dig in to her failures today!

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

  1. Failing to help yourself before you can help other people
  2. Making good decisions, at the wrong time
  3. Specialising too early

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 55 of Webflail with Jordan Gilroy

I’m your host, Jack Redley, your failure connosieur and today my guest is Jordan Gilroy. One half of Kin studio, Jordan works with his brother building a small but mighty agency making pixel perfect stunning websites which arrest the user in a small digital moment of wow (or that’s what these websites do for me). Jordan has won multiple awards and recognitions for my work, such as Design & Art Direction InBook Award and Site of the Day. But with Jordan’s 10 years of experience in the digital design industry, starting as a senior designer at a creative agency, and working projects for leading companies across different sectors, you think he didn’t have some ups and downs on the way?

The failures we’ll talk about today are
1. Focusing on the volume of work and saying yes to everything.
2. Undervaluing my services and being too cheap.
3. Poor project management. From processes to scope and deliverables.

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 57 of Webflail with Glenn McWhinney.

I first met Glenn in real life at the London Webflow meetup last year and I was pleased he was as nice in person as he is online. Glenn is a seriously experienced Webflower. With over 20 years experience working with the web, he has more recently become a specialist NoCoder using tools like Webflow, Airtable, Integromat, Outseta (+ a bucket load more). He launched TheFlow.agency in 2019 as one of the first NoCode agencies in the UK, NoCodeKids with my good friend Max Haining of 100 Days Of No Code, and, more recently, Live The Flow Life - a community and Wized course (although more courses to come).

The failures we’ll talk about today are:

  1. Wanting to find a Co-founder
  2. Pushing to make something happen doesn’t mean you should
  3. Holding too tightly to things

If you’re in the Webflow space on Twitter, you have no doubt seen this man’s exceptionally aesthetically pleasing tweets as he shares colourful web design inspiration as well as his own work characterised by large sans serif fonts, block colours and funky illustrations. I hesitate to try and describe a single style for Ayush though - he is clearly inspired by a huge range of visuals which no doubt influence his eclectic design styles.

The failures that we’ll talk about today are:

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 60 of Webflail with  Witt Langstaff

He’s the gentle giant, and the most low key/high performing member of Edgar Allan agency that I know. He's got a surf dude vibe and laid back cool. Mason was Witt’s flash teacher at college and the Mason hired him when he was at college. I also work closely with Witt on Slater.

The failures that we’ll talk about today are:

  1. Overcoming nerves
  2. Biting off more than you can chew
  3. Getting fired

PATREON - Want to support us and have AD FREE podcasts? Then become a Webflailer HERE

Welcome to Episode 61 of Webflail with  Victor Okwegada.

I first came across Victor on Twitter when I saw posts of Webflow community watch parties and then scrolled to find him teaching large classrooms of kids about digital skills with his Great Minds In Tech Foundation. Besides doing a lot of community work, Victor is a product designer too.

The failures that we’ll talk about today are:

1) Procrastination of tasks.

2) Working with the wrong client even after seeing their red flags.

3) Working without team mates.

28 Nov 2023Ep 65 | "I Got Scammed" - Why Choosing Collaborators Carefully Saves You Money And Time | With Martina And Juan00:54:27

🗓 Change Your Calendar Game: SAVVYCAL HERE

Welcome to Episode 65 of Webflail with Martina and Juan.

These two are the dynamic duo of 473 agency based in Argentina. Their work is stunning - clean, colourful and well-considered. They leave no stone unturned. What I love about them too is that they are quietly very funny people. In fact, on their website it says '98% of the time, our clients return. It's actually 100% but for some reason 98% sounds even better'. I love this. I got to know these two when they worked on the Slater rebrand, where they smashed it out the park. And I also saw them speak at Friend’s agency’s Estado de Flow event in Buenos Aires, where they encouraged us all to be more coriander which we’ll talk about in this episode.

The failures that we'll talk about in this episode are:

  1. Launching in the US market,
  2. Their creative direction getting hijacked
  3. Getting scammed with relationships not working out.

12 Dec 2023Ep 67 | How To Find Your Place In The Webflow Community | With Isabel Edwards00:54:25

Welcome to Episode 66 of Webflail with Isabel Edwards.

Now, I know Isabel from a Webflow meetup that I organised in London at the start of this year, and then I met her again at Barcelona meetup organised by Tambien Studios. She is a good egg who is passionate about community. She has set up two events this year and both were a massive success. She is also the head of brand for Versori, a platform that integrates, migrates, transforms and automates your business systems backed by Y Combinator. She is a Webflow global leader and she was Webflow Global Leader of the Year this year, beating some strong competitors (I will never forgive her...) She also freelances for Designsie, doing some web design, brand identity and UX UI when she finds time around her job, which as you may have guessed, she doesn't actually have too much of.

The failures that we'll get into in this episode are:

  1. GCSE and A level
  2. First career in marketing
  3. Finding her place in the Webflow community, being a community leader rather than an educator

18 Dec 2023Moment 22 | "No One Gives A F*** About What You're Doing... And That's Encouraging" | With Isabel Edwards00:07:57

In this moment, Isabel and Jack have a compelling conversation about challenging job experiences and how they can serve as unexpected catalysts for personal and professional development. Jack and Isabel explore the idea that every job, good or bad, contributes valuable skills and perspectives, such as relationship building and communication enhancement. We also address the common fears of starting new ventures, like podcasting, and the paralysis that can result from overanalyzing choices such as tools and client acquisition. Isabel also emphasises the need to normalise and openly discuss failure as an integral part of the journey to success.

19 Dec 2023Ep 68 | "We Charged 900 Dollars A Month... For Unlimited Design" - The Honest Truth About Subscription Based Pricing | With Keith Armstrong00:54:50

Welcome to Episode 68 of Webflail with Keith Armstrong.

In the about section of Keith's LinkedIn, it simply says 'a Canadian website developer with a stubborn drive to make the web better'.

This undersells Keith in my opinion. He is the founder of Flowsparrow, a subscription based Webflow service. He’s been involved with Flowparty, I’ve heard him share wisdom on Twitter Lives, he had a newsletter for a while called the div dive. He’s keen to help others is what I’ve seen and that goes a long way. Not only that, he’s just started Remote Supply - a clothing brand with a 90s feel.

But naturally, no road is perfectly straight!

The fails that we’ll discuss today are:

1. Not letting go of control and trusting team members

2. Subscription VS. Project Based

3. Burnout & Side Projects

20 Dec 2023Moment 23 | Why A Website Is Never Finished | With Keith Armstrong00:07:43

In this moment, we dive back into the  debate of retainer vs. project-based web design in this episode. Keith discusses the benefits of long-term client relationships in retainer models, contrasting them with the one-off nature of project-based work. Key points include the ever-evolving nature of web design, the importance of balancing aesthetics with functionality, and financial implications for design agencies. This episode is perfect for web designers and business owners looking for insights into effective client engagement and sustainable business models in the dynamic world of web design.

02 Jan 2024Ep 70 | "They Wanted My Business To Scale To Millions" - Why transitioning into Webflow was 'Make or Break' for this Studio Owner | With Geenay Kotze00:48:54

Welcome to Episode 70 of Webflail with Geenay Kotze.

Geenay is someone I'm seeing more and more on social media, sharing behind the scenes of client work and sharing thoughts about being a founder. She's a South African living and working in London and she's tearing it up. She is building her freelancer business out, her studio Consortium, which she's the founder of. She's a UX UI designer by training and a full stack designer by trade. She's helped hundreds of businesses across the UK, US, UAE and more to develop their existing customer experience and more importantly, generate new ones. But as we know, as with anyone that has got to the level of success that Janay has, there have been some failures along the way.

The failures that we will talk about today are:

  1. Struggling to focus on the core business and staying consistent
  2. Building and getting involved in online community
  3. Expanding her studio

09 Jan 2024Ep 71 | Why Johnnie walked away from an agency he built for 10 years | With Johnnie Gomez00:51:02

Welcome to Episode 71 of Webflail with Johnnie Gómez .

He’s Staff Brand Designer, Web at Webflow but before joining webflow in 2019, he ran a digital agency together with my business partner for the last decade. They worked with all sorts of clients in all kinds of projects including fashion campaigns, ads, branding, store design & signage, web design and development, mailing and drip campaigns. ANYTHING CREATIVE, JOHNNIE HAS DONE IT.

Kevin arleo:

“Johnnie is that kind of people that is hard to find. There is no need to say that he is an amazing, chameleon-like designer that can do any type of work with brilliance because his work speaks for himself. But the thing is, that Johnnie is an incredible human being with a great sense of empathy. I have never seen someone who cares so much for his coworkers and the design community. He is always willing to teach and learn from others. His energy and kindness are contagious. My advice for anyone considering working with Johnnie would be: DO IT, don't miss that opportunity.”

The failures that we will talk about today are:

  1. Scaling his 10-year old agency in Argentina, or NOT doing this.
  2. Trying to freelance but bellyflopping and drowning.
  3. Not understanding cultural implications

15 Jan 2024Ep 72 | How Henry lost his first 10k Client... And now works with Ali Abdaal | With Henry Ludlam-Steinke00:51:22

Welcome to Episode 72 of Webflail with Henry Ludlam-Steinke .

Henry is a london based Webflower that is particularly talented at design. Hen-ry.com says it all - clean fonts, shimmering gradients, 3D animations is the name of the game to create elegant, flowing and pleasing websites. Despite being a young gun in the Webflow space, Henry has worked with YouTube greats like Ali Abdaal and Jamie Rawsthorne as well as start ups too. Fun facts - Henry wears caps a lot, he’s currently digital nomading around (in turkey at the time of this call) and he’s bullish on learning spline.

As with anyone that’s working with these type of clients and making saucy work this early on in their journey, Henry has had some highs and lows so far.

The failures we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

  1. First time I ever got a 10k project
  2. Deep sense of shame despite client criticism was unfounded
  3. Overshared and unshared on Twitter
