In this episode of Wealthy Woman Lawyer®, Davina speaks with guest Danielle Hendon, founder and CEO of 4 Corners CFO. Danielle is a Texas-based CPA who thrives on applying big-business financial concepts to growing small businesses while increasing their livelihoods and legacies. With more than a decade of experience in corporate finance and accounting, today she specializes in working as a fractional CFO for law firms.

  • The key financial reports women law firm owners should be reviewing in their businesses, what your profit and loss statements and balance sheets reveal about your earnings, and how to interpret what the numbers mean to your business.
  • How to understand a cash flow statement in relation to your business budget and account for emergency savings.
  • Why you need a business budget built off of your profit and loss statement for the year, why you should review it on a monthly basis, and how it can help you define areas of the business that need extra attention.
  • How to prioritize your expenses in relation to your business budget, why you should be tracking all of your time, and how your systems are impacting your billing.
  • The reason you could be undervaluing yourself by charging flat fees, why you need several people on your financial team, and the role of a fractional CFO.

02 Dec 2020Janet Falk | How PR Can Help Position Your Firm as the Go-To Resource in the Community00:52:56

On this week’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, we speak with Janet Falk, a Wall Street securities analyst turned PR professional, and the founder of Falk Communications and Research. Falk Communications and Research provides media relations, public relations, and marketing strategy for revenue growth for attorneys, as well as other professional consultants.

Janet says, “If you want to be seen, you want to be in the venue, or on the platform, or in the publication where your target market is looking for resources and information. That may be on social media, but recognize that you have to tag it and re-promote it repeatedly in order to get the attention of the people who are looking there. The reason why you want to be in print media is because print lives in print and online, so it's like you're getting two for the price of one.”

We chat about why media relations is relevant, even in today’s “social” world, and the importance of leveraging PR to promote your firm, as well as:

  • Positioning yourself as an expert thru third-party publications

  • The advantages of outsourcing your PR

  • The benefits of e-newsletters as a means of self-promotion

  • Advice for attorneys who are seeking more visibility

  • And more

07 Mar 2024Episode 239: Transforming the Phoenix Personal Injury Market with Gordana Mikalicki00:37:40

In today’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I chat with Gordana Mikalicki a/ka/a @lawyergordi, about how she’s working to transform the personal injury marketing in Phoenix, AZ, with her unique branding and service model.

Gordana founded Elmm Law Group because she found the Arizona personal injury legal market to be stale and saturated with predominately male-run firms more concerned about their bottom lines than client injuries.

The Elmm Law Group prides itself on providing clients with a non-traditional law firm experience focusing on direct attorney-client contact (she gives clients her private cell phone number), diligence, & straightforwardness. It uses modern technology to elevate efficiency and build client case values.

Listen in as Gordi and I discuss:

  • What influenced her to want to be a lawyer even at an early age
  • Her journey from serving as an Assistant Attorney General and public service work to personal injury lawyer (and the mindset shift that helped her make the transition)
  • What turns her off about most personal injury marketing, why she thinks it hurts the profession, and what she’s doing differently
  • What she did as a new law firm owner to keep her business growing during the COVID pandemic
  • How she overcame her fear of being in videos on social media and created a successful brand
  • What she looks for in hiring her staff and why she’s found it to be more important than a particular skillset.
  • Her number one piece of advice to women lawyers who want to start and scale a law firm business (Hint: Don’t expect her to sugarcoat it.)
  • And much more!

15 May 2019Autumn Beck Blackledge | Divorce as a New Beginning00:37:43

Attorney Autumn Beck Blackledge specializes in family law and divorce but has a totally different mindset than most in that field.

She is focused on helping families through the divorce transition in a way that reduces animosity as much as possible for the best interests of the children.

This allows adults to make peace with the past, move on with their lives, and be effective co-parents. She lives this example in her own life with her own big, blended family.

We talk about how divorce, done right, can be a good thing, as well as…

  • A scheduling strategy for balancing career and parenthood
  • Getting rid of “mommy guilt”
  • The multi-step intake process to find your ideal clients
  • A weekly plan that boosts productivity and maximizes family time

03 Oct 2022Christie Arkovich | Can You Build Wealth with 6-Figures in Student Loan Debt?00:54:00

In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I chat with Christie Arkovich, a Florida licensed attorney for more than 30 years, and a frequent presenter for continuing legal education seminars hosted by the American Bankruptcy Institute (“ABI”), the National Association of Consumer Advocates (“NACA”) and the Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association (the “TBBBA”).

Christie also writes a quarterly column for the TBBBA, Student Loan Sidebar, and maintains a Youtube Channel for the Student Loan Sidebar at www.youtube.com/c/arkovichlaw about recent student loan related laws, regulations, and developments nationwide.

Prior to starting her own law firm in 1995, Christie worked as trial counsel for Sallie Mae, ECMC and other student loan servicers or guarantors. She recently served on the Student Loan Committee for the new Student Loan Management Program in the Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida and was Chair of the Consumer CLE for the Tampa Bay Bankruptcy Bar Association for 2019-2022.

“Most of our clients nowadays, you know, they want to repay what they borrow, they understand they signed a contract (and) they're good with that. What they can't pay is the excessiveness…because with the cost of interest with a default, which basically adds 25%
collection costs on a federal loan, you end up with just something that's unpayable. We get
rid of that excessiveness, and then we try to do it in a way that's tax free, or at least with an
understanding of what that potential tax issue could be..” – Christie Arkovich

Listen in as Christi and I discuss…

  • Why people were able to pay their student loans in the 80s and 90s (even with higher interest rates) and what’s changed since (no, it’s not your imagination)
  • How to explain to your grandma why you are struggling to pay your student loan debt.
  • How Arkovich Law helped a 70-year-old neurosurgeon get out from under $1.1M in debt so he could finally retire.
  • The many ways high student loan debt can affect your ability to lead a rich life.
  • Why forbearance is never the best solution (even though the lenders so kindly offer it—don’t be fooled!)
  • How the three-pronged Bruner test keeps you from discharging student loans in bankruptcy (A clear example of “good cases make bad law”).
  • How to refresh your memory about what kind of loan you have so you can assess what type of relief may be available to you.
  • One trick that will help you tell whether your student loan servicer is lying to you about what type of loan you have and the relief you may be entitled to
  • Critical deadlines you need to know! (Write these down.) (Important update: Since we recorded this podcast episode on September 27th, the law has changed around consolidating FFEL loans—government-backed loans held by private lenders—in that effective September 29th, you can no longer consolidate these types of loans to Direct Loans and quality for the one-time $10,000 relief grant).

And much, much more!

07 Oct 2020Diana Maier | Creating a ‘Joyful’ Law Firm00:49:28

On this week’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, we speak with Diana Maier, the Founder and CEO of Maier Law Group. Maier Law Group is an employment and privacy law practice that provides legal advice to employers. The firm was founded on the idea that the workplace can be the means for effective social and personal change, one happy employee at a time, and that’s a philosophy that Diana models in her own joyful firm.

Diana says, “I thought a lot about going to school and getting a PsyD or an LCSW, but at the end of the day, I knew that I might get frustrated in that role and that I might want to feel I had a little more muscle behind my degree. So, I actually did go to law school for that purpose (creating social change) and came out as a public defender for several years before I went into employment law. That was a really gratifying career, and overall, I think it was the right choice, but it was a very roundabout path to get there.”

We chat about Diana’s journey to becoming an attorney, to starting her own employment law firm, and her mission of helping employers create great places to work, as well as:

  • Building a career around your passions

  • Helping women attorneys create a more satisfying career experience and bringing joy to the workplace

  • Her networking group for women attorneys, Joy in the Law

  • How the culture she’s created in her own firm positively impacts her clients’ businesses

  • And more
22 Jul 2020Trivinia Barber | Benefits of Working with a Virtual Executive Assistant01:00:35

On this week’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, we speak with Trivinia Barber, founder and CEO of Priority VA, a virtual company that helps match busy business owners, including attorneys, with highly skilled and experienced executive assistants.

“Just because you can do it all doesn't mean you should. With companies like ours, when you can hire someone for fractional assistance, not just an assistant who's going to be there for 40 hours a week, but be there for you at key times, you're able to really outsource the things that you need to do, but without the burden of having to fill time for someone 40 hours a week,” says Trivinia.

We chat about her journey to creating Priority VA, the benefits of working virtually, as well as:

  • Why an executive assistant is different from other VAs

  • What an executive assistant can do for you and your business

  • The tools Priority VA uses to help successfully match firms with the right executive assistant

  • Developing the skills to work with a growing team

  • And more

  • Some of my clients’ biggest accomplishments this last year (it’s not all about the money)
  • Why I created the League and how it’s going

25 Nov 2020Heinan Landa | How Tech Has Transformed Law Firm Life00:44:48

On this week’s Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, we’re joined by Heinan Landa, Founder, and CEO of Optimal Networks, Inc., a globally ranked IT services firm. After earning his BS and MS in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Heinan went on to receive his MBA from the Wharton School of Business. Featured in Legal Management, Legal Times, Chief Executive Inc. Magazine, Forbes, CIO, and with regular appearances on WJLA-TV, WTTG-TV, and WUSA9, Heinan is a trusted leader in the legal technology and business spaces.

We chatted with Heinan about all things tech for the legal industry, particularly the changes in law firm tech he has been observing since the global pandemic began.

Heinan says, “During the first month or two of the lock-down, we had a lot of very quick implementations of Teams, Slack, and Zoom. Following that was a lot of discussion on taking a firm’s culture into the digital world to make people feel connected to their co-workers because that's what people were missing the most. Operationally, they were good: they were able to work on documents, they could call clients, they could do whatever they needed to do. But, it was all of a sudden this feeling of being disconnected from their teammates that they needed. That became the big topic of discussion.”

We also discussed:

  • Heinan’s book, The Modern Law Firm: How to Thrive in an Era of Rapid Technological Change

  • Transitioning the culture of your firm into a digital space

  • The security issues that arise from distributed team members working from home

  • The importance of a reliable IT team to your firm

  • And more
15 Aug 2024Episode 261 Sometimes the Solution is to Slow Down00:08:35

You’d think by now after being an attorney and business owner for almost two decades, I would know what I’m about to share with you today. But the one thing I know about life as an entrepreneur and business owner is that there are ALWAYS lessons to be learned. As Abraham Hicks says: “You will never get it done, and you can never get it wrong.”

Why? Because, as human beings, we are always receiving new information and transforming how we think and behave based on that information—yes, even those of us we wouldn’t think ever change are always changing.

Listen in as I share the ah-ha moment I had this week. It surprised me and it may surprise you. If you are a high-achieving woman like me, it may be this is exactly what you need to hear.

16 Mar 2023188: Understanding How Revenue Drives Profit00:15:29

Many law firm owners evaluate their businesses based on how much profit they take home every quarter or every year. What every entrepreneur should understand, though, is that revenue drives profit–the more revenue you bring in, the more you’ll have to invest in your business growth, and the higher the potential profit over time.

It can feel counterintuitive to view hiring, training and setting up systems and other “expenses” as an investment in your business, but activities like these are the key to increasing your long-term profitability.

In today’s episode of Wealthy Woman Lawyer®, Davina breaks down the math so you can understand how to increase your revenue. She also explains why a lower profit percentage isn’t necessarily a bad thing and shares her thoughts on why focusing on revenue–especially in the early stages of your business–is a good thing.

17 Feb 2021Sara Jones | Fighting for Justice for Her Clients and Her Hometown00:58:28

On this week’s Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, we speak with Attorney Sara Jones, the Founder and CEO of Sara Jones Law in Lake Wales, Florida, one of the fastest growing firms in Polk County, about her fight for justice both for her clients and her community.

The attorneys and staff of Sara Jones Law serve individuals and families with criminal defense, personal injury, and family law matters. In addition to leading her team to serve the citizens of Polk County, Sara also is a passionate social justice activist and community leader. Currently, she is the President of the Lincoln Community Development Corporation, the Secretary for the Green and Gold Foundation, and the Vice Chair of the Circle of Friends Board of Directors. She also sits on the City of Lake Wales Code Enforcement Board and has been instrumental in the implementation of the city's Lake Wales redevelopment plan.

Sara says, “The law touches every part of people's lives, whether they realize it or not. My practice area was an extension of that desire to help people, because the people who come to me are either very emotionally hurt by their issues with criminal defense or family law or they're physically injured with their personal injury issues, and it brings me a certain amount of pleasure to be able to help people through difficult circumstances and get back on track to having the life that they want.”

We chat about her decision to return to Lake Wales after law school so that she could serve her hometown community, plus:

24 Nov 2021The One Thing Highly Successful Women Do (That Most Don’t)00:07:10

Coaching women law firm owners over the past eight years has taught me there really is a “success superpower.”

But what sets the financially and emotionally fulfilled law firm owners apart from the less successful?

In this episode, I share the one key that can put you on the fast track to success in your firm and in your life.

You’ll discover…

  • The truth behind the myth of perfectionism and how you can be wildly successful even when you’re in the “messy middle” of scaling your firm
  • Why systems, teams, time management, and hard work (although important) won’t take you to the “next level” unless you also employ this one simple tactic
  • What to add to your daily practice to achieve your most sought after goals
  • And much, much more!

Are you suffering from the “success dilemma” in your firm?

It’s one many women law firm owners seem to be struggling with right now... they are so successful that they are turning away work and yet, they can’t hire the talented A+ associates, paralegals and admins they need to meet the demand.

If you are feeling the hiring pinch, know it’s not just you, and it’s not an illusion. Daily media reports are filled with stories of the “Great Resignation” and the U.S. labor shortage. Apparently, law firms are not exempt.

Today, on the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I share five strategies to help you cultivate the team you need to grow your firm and work fewer hours—even though, right now, good help is hard to find:

  • Why “Think Different” will be the hiring mantra of growing firms for the next decade
  • How to use the factor of “specificity” to find hidden talent in your network, eager for a new opportunity
  • The employment ad secret that pre-screens for top candidates before they ever apply
  • And more...

18 Jan 2024232 |How to Stay Calm When ‘January Panic’ Hits00:18:50

In today’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I cover a phenomenon I’ve discovered over the years as I’ve coached hundreds of lawyers in scaling their law firm businesses. I call it “January Panic.” It’s that feeling some people get in January—kind of like a holiday hangover—where they worry about cash flow, feel like money is tight, and start trying to “fix” financial problems without clearly thinking through the source of them first.

Often, it can result in taking actions like buying software you don’t need, buying a course to learn a new practice area in the hopes of making more money, or drastically pulling back on marketing initiatives (or implementing the wrong ones) out of fear.

Listen in to this episode as I share with you:

  • A short quiz that will help you identify if you have “January Panic.”
  • 5 real reasons you may feel pinched in January.
  • 3 ways to avoid a cash flow crunch in January 2025
  • 3 steps you can take NOW to improve the rest of your January and set yourself up for an excellent first quarter of 2024.
  • And much more!

05 Jun 2019Jaclyn Roberson | Attracting – and Retaining – the Best Law Firm Employees00:30:00

There’s a certain comfort in being a solo attorney. You’re intimately involved in every aspect of your business… you have total control.

But, says Jaclyn Roberson, staying solo means you won’t be able to grow your practice beyond a certain point. Only when you start hiring can you boost revenue and expand your impact. And you can’t stop at support staff.

Jaclyn shares how she made her first hires, and then finally, her most challenging hires--other attorneys--and what she learned along the way, as well as…

  • The best way to attract – and keep – your most valuable employees
  • Two services you can use until you can find the right full-time employee
  • What must be in your job listing – and the best place to post it
  • The way many small businesses sabotage employee retention

07 Oct 2022Why Solos Aren’t 7-Figure Law Firm Owners00:15:31

In today’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, I want to discuss something that most law firm coaches are afraid to tell you: it is highly unlikely to achieve 7 figures in a law firm business if you are still operating as a solo.

Yes, even if you have one or two staffers working for you.

It’s a hot topic, and we are going to get into it today. If you are a solo and you are listening to this thinking “Davina, that’s not true! Don’t crush my dreams!” I hear you, and I encourage you to please hear me out, because after 9 years—almost 10—of helping women law firm owners scale their law firm businesses I never want to crush someone’s dream or tell them about “reality.” I believe we have the power to create our own reality—however, the path to get there may not look the way we envision.

What I do want to do in today’s episode is challenge some of the beliefs that may be holding you back from achieving your biggest, baddest, most audacious goals.

Listen in as I share with you:

  • Why I’ve devoting all of October to discuss how to expand your capacity for wealth and a $1M law firm business.
  • The one question I hear all the time that keeps women law firm owners stuck doing it all.
  • My recommended time frame for hiring your first one or two employees (or virtual assistants)
  • The top revenue I think you can achieve as a solo and why I don’t think you should strive for this (Hint: you’ll pay a steep personal price to get there).
  • Why the same thing that go you to where you are today as a solo is not the same thing that’s required to get you to the next level.
  • The middle-America belief that likely is holding you back (It did me for far too long).
  • The secret of any solo who says they are making a million dollars or more all by themselves (There’s more going on behind the curtain than you realize).
  • 14 questions to help you identify whether it’s time to uplevel your mindset so you can expand your capacity for wealth.

I do hope you enjoy today’s show. If so, please be sure to leave us a review on your podcast app. The more five-star reviews, the higher we rank on the app and the more women law firm owners we can help.

Have you thought about hiring a coach to help you achieve either personal or professional goals? If so, you are not alone. Coaching has become one of the fastest-growing industries. Listen in as I share:

  • A personal story of one of my struggles and how a coach helped me overcome the issue. (Warning: vulnerable share ahead!)
  • The one thing a coach can NOT do for you, no matter how much they care about you and helping you solve your problem.

28 Dec 2023229: BEST OF 2023 | Nikki Rausch | Improve Your Sales Conversations to Skyrocket Your Revenue00:50:30

Happy Holidays. We hope you have scheduled some time this month with your family and friends to rest, relax and be together. Davina is taking a brief hiatus from recording new episodes of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer podcast. We hope you enjoy our "Best of 2023" line-up of the most popular episodes of 2023, and we'll be back in January with more episodes of the number-one podcast for Women in Law in the U.S.

Nikki Rausch, CEO of Sales Maven, teaches professional women to have better and more effective sales conversations in a way that feels good to them. Nikki has more than 25 years of sales experience, including to organizations such as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Hewlett-Packard, and NASA. Over time, she also developed an extensive background in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) which helped her shatter sales records across a variety of industries. Working as a sales rep in a male-dominated industry, Nikki was never comfortable with traditional sales training. This led her to explore how to have more influential conversations with potential clients in a way that better suited her personality and style. Now, she helps others do the same through her coaching services and presentations. She also has written three books and is the host of the podcast Sales Maven.

If you struggle to conduct effective sales conversations or just feel “icky” about the thought of selling your services, this episode is for you. During our conversation, Nikki shares impactful tools to help women lawyers conduct better sales conversations–ones that effectively onboard clients and leave everyone feeling good.

Listen in to learn more including:

  • Nikki’s journey from being an average salesperson to a top-producing salesperson who now teaches people to do the same.
  • How combining Neuro Linguistic Programming with sales helped Nikki become an award-winning, top-producing salesperson.
  • Questions to ask during your consultation that will lead a client to self-identify so you can easily determine if you are the right fit for their situation.
  • When it’s time to “bless and release” rather than ask for the sale – because not everyone is your ideal client.
  • What to do and say to exude confidence before every important meeting.
  • Why it’s important to proactively manage your mindset and set boundaries.
  • The “selective amnesia” technique to help you manage outcomes after highly charged, boundary-drawing conversations.

In this episode of Wealthy Woman Lawyer®, Davina discusses common objections a PNC might give for not hiring you immediately, and what may be going on behind the scenes that you may not realize. (Hint: It has nothing to do with you!)

By identifying your boundaries and setting client expectations upfront, with practice, you can create a steady flow of “right fit” clients. Join us as Davina shares what your PNC really means when they say “no.”

15 Jul 2020Shell Tain | Untangling Money Knots: How Picking Apart Your Money Stories Could Change Your Business and Your Life for the Better00:54:15

On this week’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, we speak with Shell Tain, founder of $ensible Coaching. Shell is a money coach, certified by the International Coach Federation, whose mission is to help her clients, entrepreneurs, and small business owners untangle their money knots.

“My dad decided very early that I should have a good relationship with money. He started me very young, and he made it fun, he made it interesting. I had to keep a ledger of what I spent, and the columns were income and outgo. And the brilliant thing he did at that point was he didn't care what it was. I could buy candy, he didn't care. He just wanted the numbers to work,” says Shell.

We chat about how Shell’s early relationship with money led her to a career, first in accounting, and then in coaching business owners and entrepreneurs and helping them understand the childhood money stories they’ve carried into their businesses. In addition, we discuss…

  • Money as a reflection of what is going on in your life—now and in the past

  • Breaking the taboo of talking about money

  • What financial freedom really means

  • Money knots—what they are and how to untangle them for a happier, more successful life

  • And more

23 Nov 2023224: A Season of Change00:13:47

I love each change of season–Fall to Winter to Spring to Summer and back to Fall. In Florida, we don’t get much of that. It’s pretty much perpetual summer here, which is one of the reasons I’ve decided to move to Colorado in the next few weeks.

On this episode of Wealthy Woman Lawyer®, I share with you the reasons for my move, the negative thoughts (mine and others) I had to overcome to embrace this big life change, and how I anticipate it will transform my life and business as well.

Change can be scary, but it also can make life so much more interesting. I’m here for it! Listen in and let me know what you think.

09 Mar 2023187: 7 Actions to Improve Cash Flow When Money is Tight00:19:22

For any entrepreneur, managing cash flow can be cyclical. It’s especially common for attorneys because some operate on contingency, and others fall into a rhythm of marketing to create a lot of work, and then doing the work and not leaving time for marketing which leads to no new work. It creates a feast-or-famine cycle; if they aren’t careful, they will end up cash poor during the slow months.

In today’s episode of Wealthy Woman Lawyer®, Davina shares seven steps to improve your cash flow when money is tight. These actions are meant to help you attract more cash now and help you set up a system to avoid falling into the feast-or-famine trap again.

09 May 2024Episode 248 Do’s and Don’ts of Optimal SEO with Doug Bradley00:56:41

In today’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing Doug Bradley, President and Founder of Everest Legal Marketing.

Doug's journey to success is a testament to his resilience and hard work. Despite juggling two jobs, marriage, and homeownership, he managed to achieve a double major in Business Administration and Broadcasting at the University of La Verne. This dedication and perseverance inspire confidence in his abilities and his commitment to his work.

Afterward, he entered the advertising world, working at Dex Media and witnessing firsthand the decline of yellow page advertising during the Great Recession. He then transitioned to Lawyers.com, where he excelled in a new industry, mastering all things SEO.

When Martindale-Hubbell sold Lawyers.com, Doug decided to secure his financial independence, founding Everest Legal Marketing, LLC, a company that provides SEO, website design, and content marketing services to attorneys and law firms across the U.S.

Listen in as Doug and I discuss:

  • Doug’s journey into the online advertising space and, ultimately, online advertising for law firms.
  • Three basic elements of search engine optimization (What it is and what it takes for it to work for your law firm).
  • What many law firms get wrong about website marketing.
  • What you need to create good legal content.
  • The real goal of your marketing content (Hint: it’s not providing prospects with a legal education).
  • Five of the biggest mistakes law firms make in law firm marketing.
  • Ways to move away from the “scale of justice” or “courthouse steps” in your website design and differentiate your law firm from others.
  • How long it takes to see results from good SEO.
  • The cost of good SEO (it depends!) and what should be included in your strategy.
  • Questions you should ask before you hire an “SEO” company to help you improve your SEO.
  • And much more!

23 Feb 2023185: Danielle Hendon | Taking Control of Your Finances with a Fractional CFO00:47:25

Getting a handle on your business financials can be tricky--especially if you hate doing the math. Hiring a fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) could be the secret sauce you need to take your business up another notch.

Davina and Danielle dive into the details of law practice financials and why they’re often so messy. Danielle breaks down how to understand a cash flow statement, the reason for creating a business budget, and how you could be undervaluing yourself by charging flat fees.

Show Highlights:

19 Aug 2020Chelsea Williams | The Essential Role of Good Financial Management in Business Growth00:47:55

On this week’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, we speak with Chelsea Williams. Chelsea is the founder of Core Solutions Group Inc. which provides accounting, tax, and cash management solutions for law firms to maximize your growth and profits.

Chelsea says: “One of the realizations that I came to when I worked in the traditional tax and accounting world was how very reactive the services tended to be. When I say that, what I mean is, maybe the accounting firm would hand over the monthly financials, but it kind of stopped there. Business owners would look at the financials and almost go cross-eyed. They weren't actually being proactive and taking the time to understand their financials, and we weren't working with them to do that. When I founded Core Solutions Group, I founded it based around the idea of proactive services and engaging with our clients to go above and beyond.”

We chat about generating wealth and using it in impactful ways, as well as:

  • Addressing the challenge of understanding our financials and learning what numbers to focus in on

  • Creating and working with a budget in useful ways

  • Using budgetary information to allocate money towards business growth

  • Accounting for pandemic relief loans

  • And more

Many small business owners think they don’t need legal help until they’re facing a lawsuit or some other major legal issue. In fact, says Ayesha Chidolue, it should be part of their budget from day one… when the business is just an idea.

If you can't afford to consult with a lawyer at the outset to make sure you are doing it right, she says, perhaps you aren't ready to own a business.

Alexandra is a graduate of Campbell Law School where she served on the Board of Editors of Campbell's Law Review, and has written for the ABA Journal, Legal Tech News, Above the Law, Legal Business World and many more.

“Everything you do as a professional, whether you do a lot of speaking engagements or you attend a lot of conferences, is making yourself known, making yourself searchable, and showing up where people are looking for you. And, that all contributes to building that sort of social trust that's necessary for someone to make a hire,” says Alexandra.

We chat about the current demand for content writing and copywriting for attorneys, as well as:

30 May 2024Episode 251 5 Skills That Made Me a Better Business Owner00:18:06

In today’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, I want to share with you five skills I acquired that I believe made me a better business owner than I was when I started my entrepreneurial journey.

I’m also going to share with you WHY I think they made me a better business owner because that’s important as well.  Just adopting someone else’s methods or ideas on a subject without understanding why they are doing it that way will not help you. Understanding the 'why' behind business practices empowers you to make informed decisions and take control of your business.

Listen in as I share…

  • Why it’s important to understand why someone does what they do (what they get out of it).
  • Why I see opportunities all around me every day (yes, even in my inbox) and how that serves me
  • Why I’m grateful I went to law school and became an attorney and how it serves me as a business owner (but also, the downside)
  • The one skill that is required to make anything happen and the advantage people who possess it have over those who do not.
  • The skill that helps me to minimize fear and anxiety when things do not go the way I envision they will (this one has helped me to survive the inevitable ups and downs in my business)
  • The most important skill to have if you want to make a career as an entrepreneur and business owner (and it’s also been the hardest one for me to master)
  • How to get started if you want to hone your leadership skills and be a better law firm owner
  • And much more!

10 Jul 2019Elizabeth Stephenson | New Law Firm, New Direction00:32:25

As CEO of New Direction Family Law, Elizabeth Stephenson is passionate about helping families facing tough times come out the other end stronger and safer. Perhaps, it's because she's always been passionate about helping children and families, as far back as her early days in social work. More likely, it's because she's had her own share of struggles to rebuild her life following loss.

But this isn't the first time she's built a successful law firm, so when she chose to start anew, she chose a different approach. Where once she would have struggled by herself to bear the full burden of her cases, landing new clients, and the day-to-day operations of the firm, now she is older and wiser.

In this episode, Stephenson talks about how trusting others to help her made all the difference in the growth of her firm, and how it, ultimately, increased her personal fulfillment.

Tune in to find out…

  • How social media has transformed her marketing efforts – but in-person networking remains key
  • A strategy to figure out the right marketing mix (it’s different for every firm)
  • An unlikely source of referrals you might be missing
  • Ways investing in the community can yield huge returns in your business
  • And more

23 Sep 2020Carol Williams | How Following Her Passion for Helping Others Led to Success00:55:12

On this week’s episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, we speak with Carol Williams, Founder and CEO of Williams Immigration. Carol is a former Adjudications Officer at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and founded Williams Immigration to be able to offer personalized service to companies, employees, and families seeking legal counsel within the complex area of immigration law.

Carol knew she wanted to be a lawyer from a very young age and had this to say about it: “As a little kid, even though I didn't know exactly what a lawyer did, I knew that they explained the legal process to their clients, and every night I would wonder if people that had been arrested really understood what was about to happen to them. So, I just put it in my head that I wanted to be that person to explain. I didn’t know whether they were guilty or innocent, but I just wanted to be that person who really kind of held their hand and just explained what was about to happen to them and guided them through that process.”

Even though Carol ultimately chose not to pursue a career in criminal law, she stayed true to her goal of helping people navigate complex legal systems. Today, she’s a successful immigration attorney—at a time when really good immigration attorneys are needed more than ever.

We chat about Carol’s journey to creating Williams Immigration, as well as:

  • Why women have a unique perspective on working in immigration

  • Being unabashedly honest and embracing your truest self

  • Important qualities of a legal professional that can’t be taught

  • Changes in immigration practice

  • And more
26 Dec 2019Beth McDaniel | A Case for Not Growing it Alone00:42:25

Attorney Beth McDaniel founded her own practice in 2002 after years of working— first as a volunteer mediator, and then as an attorney in a firm so she could support her growing family.

It wasn’t until she became seriously ill that she realized she needed more support in her business.

She shares several takeaways that any attorney who wants to start a business (or somebody who wants to grow a business beyond themselves) can learn from, including...

  • The job you really have… when you’re looking for a job
  • What she did when faced with serious illness – and clients had concerns
  • An extra step she took to separate herself from the local competition
  • The importance of managing your business – not just doing the work
  • And more
02 Mar 2023186: Stacey Kalamaras | Collaboration in Trademark Law00:42:49

More attorneys than ever before it seems are drawn to Intellectual Property (IP) law, in particular trademark law, because it’s an area of practice that allows for more location flexibility.

However, there’s much more to trademarks law than simply filing applications for clients who want to protect their intellectual property. Successful trademark attorneys know they need to acquire deep knowledge of the practice area. That’s where Trademarkabilities comes in.

In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, Chicago-based IP attorney Stacey Kalamaras joins Davina to discuss her new online academy for trademark lawyers. She is the founder and lead instructor of Trademarkabilities, a legal training academy that provides access to comprehensive trademark instruction–far beyond just the initial application process. With her lengthy experience in marketing, branding, and trademark law, she brings a unique perspective to her education platform.

Stacey aims to help other trademark lawyers fulfill their dreams and potential while offering exciting and practical content to her clients.

Show Highlights:

  • Stacey’s path to becoming an intellectual property (IP) lawyer, and why she was in her late 30s before she graduated from law school
  • Why there’s never been a better time for women lawyers to collaborate in growing their law firm businesses
  • What led Stacey to start her own law firm and why she now focuses full-time on her training academy, Trademarkabilities
  • Why there isn’t one “right” way to be an attorney and the importance of alliance among female attorneys and entrepreneurs
  • How the pandemic and its aftermath forever changed how we, as lawyers, work with our clients
  • Stacey’s paid membership community, Trademarkabilities Insider, how it supports trademark attorneys who may not need or want her classes, and her advice for lawyers just starting in this field
