21 Jul 2022We Own This City (HBO)00:09:50
Jon Bernthal. Dirty cops. Baltimore. From the creators of THE WIRE, featuring many cast members from THE WIRE. In other words, a show cooked up in my dream laboratory. If you've not gotten into this show, for whatever reason, listen to the first 5 minutes of the pod, and then go watch. If you've watched the show, listen to the whole episode to get the great spoiler moments covered at the end. Available now on HBO. It seems like a lot of people have not seen this series, my hope is it will continue to be discovered, because even long after its initial release it remains some of the best TV to watch tonight.

23 Jul 2022Yellowjackets (Showtime)00:10:06
If you thought LOST wasn't crazy enough... this is the show for you. YELLOWJACKETS is LOST if every character was a high school girls soccer player. The unique wrinkle is we see the core ensemble later in life, as they struggle with the residual trauma of their experience. Did I mention there's definitely cannibalism? This show has a little something for everyone.

27 Jul 2022The Old Man (Hulu)00:10:35
The filet mignon of spooks and spymasters, with Jeff Bridges and Jon Lithgow, impeccable writing, cinematography, production value, and Rottweilers.

29 Jul 2022The Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (HBO)00:10:58
An incisive, entertaining, and strangely uplifting documentary that truly is a celebration of the life of Anthony Bourdain. I've found myself rewatching this documentary, which may be surprising, but I'll explain why I leave it on a positive note, and I think you will too, despite the circumstances of Bourdain's death.

03 Aug 2022The Terminal List (Amazon)00:09:53
As of July 28th, this show had 1.1 BILLION views... it's okay, admit it, you like it. THE TERMINAL LIST has gotten a polarizing reaction from critics, but a lot of positive reactions from audiences. I break down Chris Pratt's violent revenge thriller, with its sky-high production values, in this episode. Listen through the spoiler section if you've seen the part where [redacted] pulls the [redacted] out of a guy's [redacted]. If you know, you know.

05 Aug 2022Life of Crime 1984-2020 (HBO)00:11:42
36 years of filming the same 3 central subjects. Maybe the most impressive documentary accomplishment... ever? This documentary has been filming for one year longer than I have been alive. I found it to be a staggering achievement that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as HOOP DREAMS as amongst the best documentaries ever made. Listen in for the kind of recommendation this show exists to make.

10 Aug 2022Solar Opposites (Hulu)00:11:11
If you think this is just an animated sitcom about aliens, watch the first two episodes. SOLAR OPPOSITES has a wildly fun and clever A plot that is basically that, but it also has one of the most inventive, intriguing running B plots of any animated series... ever. And it's that unique balancing act that makes the show so special.

12 Aug 2022Mayor of Kingstown (Paramount+)00:09:48
Jeremy Renner has a friend that's a bear in this show. That is Exhibit A of how this TV series has no guardrails, Taylor Sheridan is not taking notes, and did I mention this is basically MICHAEL CLAYTON for the prison system? If you missed Renner in THE TOWN smoldering mode, look no further than this Paramount+ series.

17 Aug 2022The Rehearsal (HBO)00:14:17
If HBO's new Nathan Fielder series THE REHEARSAL is real, it is one of the boldest, most bizarre, sociological experiments ever committed to film. Perhaps the most telling statement about the show is that I HOPE it's fake. Because if it's real, the real people in it will be furious when they see it. Unlike anything else on TV, THE REHEARSAL has become appointment television for me.

19 Aug 2022Mr Inbetween (Hulu)00:10:37
A show that sneaks up on you, and then delivers powerhouse episodes on par with anything done by the all-time TV greats like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad. A show that can be riotously funny in one moment, and heartbreakingly tragic in the next. A tour-de-force of performance, direction, and scripting. Mr Inbetween is special. Do yourself a favor and watch it. Available on Hulu. Even years now after concluding its run, this remains some of the best TV to watch tonight.

24 Aug 2022Better Call Saul00:11:32
If you're a holdout, don't feel bad. I was too. I'll explain why I finally took the plunge with BETTER CALL SAUL. And if you are caught up with the show, stay tuned for a deep dive into the Gustavo wine scene, in the spoiler section. Maybe one of the best scenes ever in the history of television, for the quality of writing, performance, direction and cinematography. A little something for everyone, no matter what your level of exposure is, regarding AMC's BETTER CALL SAUL.

26 Aug 2022Black Bird (Apple+)00:13:43
Denis Lehane. Ray Liotta. Taron Egerton. Greg Kinnear. Paul Walter Hauser. A criminal goes undercover in a prison to try and get a serial killer to confess to where he's buried dead bodies... before an appeal may set the killer free. Apple+. If somehow you're not in just from this information, listen to find out how this series really delivers in all facets. One of the Exhibit A examples of the peak TV streaming era.

22 Aug 2022Sideways00:10:17
Are there movies you rewatch every few years? Do you see these films differently, as you are in different stages of your life? Sideways is one of those movies to me, what I'm calling Watch This Tonight All-Stars. I've seen this movie at 18, 20, 25 and now 35, and each time I see different things in it, and find something new to love and analyze about it. Is that your experience? If so, listen in. 31 Aug 2022The Card Counter (HBO)00:10:10
Paul Schrader, Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, and degenerate gambling, in a film cut through with classic Schrader weirdness. Even if you're not a gambler, this is a unique, compelling, character-driven movie with strong performances and sharp turns. Recommended for anyone looking for a film off-the-beaten path and truly original. Available on HBOMax. I'd love to know what you thought if you've seen it. Write a review on Apple Podcasts or anywhere else, rate and subscribe, and reach out on Facebook (Watch This Tonight Facebook group), Instagram (watch_this_tonight) or Twitter (@BenamorDan).
29 Aug 2022Michael Clayton00:13:26
I saw this all-time-great George Clooney film when I was a 19-year-old, for the first time. I've seen it, in the ensuing 15 years, probably every year since. I even got to direct one of the actors from the film (Denis O'Hare) in an upcoming Voyage Media scripted podcast. Tony Gilroy's extraordinary movie is one of the best examples of writing, directing, and performance in an old-school adult drama, ever. Revisiting it is like hanging out with an old, rumpled, beaten-down, but lovable and dryly funny friend. How does this movie change for you as you watch it again over the years? Let me know by writing a review in Apple Podcasts or anywhere else you listen, or interacting with the show on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (search for Watch This Tonight on FB, IG, @BenamorDan on Twitter).
02 Sep 2022House Of The Dragon (HBO)00:14:07
I was planning to not watch. It took an Instagram post from director Greg Yaitanes (Banshee, Quarry) to get me through the door. And once I was through the door, I shut the door behind me and planned to stay forever, within 15 minutes. This television series, with so much riding on it for HBO, steers its way steadily in through George RR Martin's world. We might have all over-thought this. Sunday nights, dragons, palace intrigue, world-class actors. The TV show is good. Don't worry. Shoot me an email to dan@voyagemedia.com with any thoughts, comments or questions on House Of The Dragon or the podcast in general, and I'll read it on the show.
05 Sep 2022Margin Call00:11:03
Why have I watched this movie 20 times? On the face of it, JC Chandor's ensemble drama, about an after-hours fiasco at a Wall Street firm, starring a starry ensemble including Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci and Demi Moore, sounds like it should be dry and frankly, boring. It is anything but. The quality of the writing, the quality of the character work, the performances, the narrative structure, and the themes of the film, all come together to make something super-entertaining and a movie I revisit every few years. And like other All-Star episodes of this show, I discover new things about the movie as I get older and continue watching it. What movies are your Watch This Tonight All-Stars? Let me know. Shoot me an email at dan@voyagemedia.com and I'll read it on the show. Join our Facebook group at Watch This Tonight, or reach out on Instagram at watch_this_tonight or @BenamorDan on Twitter. 07 Sep 2022Welcome To Wrexham (Hulu)00:12:49
More than just a novelty act, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds new documentary TV series Welcome To Wrexham on FX/Hulu really breaks down what it means to be a sports fan, especially in a blue collar town. The show is funny, that is a given, but it's also emotionally engaging and compelling for any sports fan (even if you've never seen a game of soccer). Let me know what you think of this TV series, or anything else we're doing at Watch This Tonight, by emailing dan@voyagemedia.com or reaching out on Twitter @BenamorDan, Instagram at watch_this_tonight or join our Watch This Tonight Facebook group.
09 Sep 2022The Patient (Hulu)00:14:55
FX/Hulu continues their winning television streak with The Patient, a true two-hander starring Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson. If you've seen any marketing of the show, you'll know the high-concept premise. A serial killer abducts a therapist to try and get himself cured. Wild high-concept idea for a TV series, and through two episodes, they're pulling it off. A sneaky half-hour television drama (a rarity) that leaves you wanting more at the end of each episode (while avoiding dragging, since it's mostly Steve and Domhnall talking in a room). Let me know what you think of The Patient by writing to dan@voyagemedia.com or hitting me up on Twitter (@BenamorDan), Instagram (watch_this_tonight) or Facebook (Watch This Tonight). And keep an eye out for Voyage Media's upcoming podcast THE HITLER FILE (starring Peter Stormare and Denis O'Hare), which is surprisingly similar to this show, albeit with Hitler, coming soon.
12 Sep 2022Uncut Gems00:10:28
I don't find this movie anxiety inducing at all. Perhaps that's because I'm a reformed degenerate gambler. The Safdie Brothers Adam Sandler starring film UNCUT GEMS is a ghost of Christmas future movie for me, one I enjoy watching because I avoided going down the path of the character in the movie. Do you have any films you watch that way? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, or at watch_this_tonight on Instagram or @BenamorDan on Twitter or the Watch This Tonight Facebook group.
14 Sep 2022Tell Me Lies (Hulu)00:16:23
Everyone who worked on this show will be a star in about three weeks. I'm fully convinced of that. Hulu's new streaming television series TELL ME LIES comes out of the gate so strong, with stellar acting from its leads Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, wickedly sharp, rockstar writing from series creator Meaghan Oppenheimer, strong direction from Jonathan Levine - this TV show is the total package, and I can't wait to watch the rest of it. One of the strongest pilots I've seen in years. This episode of the podcast analyzes only the pilot episode of the series, so if you're not sure if you want to take the plunge, have a listen and decide.

Shoot me an email at dan@voyagemedia.com or reach out on Twitter (@BenamorDan) or Instagram (watch_this_tonight) and let me know what you think of the podcast or of the series TELL ME LIES.

16 Sep 2022Emergency (Amazon)00:13:38
An Amazon Prime hidden gem, Emergency is a clever, subversive, fresh take on SUPERBAD through the lens of race in America. Consistently funny while also threading in an undercurrent of social commentary, and even some sneaky horror beats, this is a true original movie cloaked in the fabric of a familiar classic. A great, fast, engaging watch, this film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Let me know what you thought of Emergency at dan@voyagemedia.com, or on Twitter @BenamorDan or Instagram at watch_this_tonight. And please write a review of the show on Apple Podcasts (I'll read it on the show!) if you're enjoying the podcast.
19 Sep 2022The Departed00:09:38
There is no other podcast about this movie exactly like this one. THE DEPARTED is my favorite movie of all time, but I didn't want to do just any THE DEPARTED podcast. So I went back to the William Monahan screenplay, and found the five best moments in THE DEPARTED original screenplay that are NOT in the final film. Many people will prefer other Martin Scorsese films, but for me this remains my favorite to this day, for its mixture of pacing, dark humor, East coast attitude, startling violence, and memorable dialogue. Let me know YOUR favorite movie of all time, by shooting an email to dan@voyagemedia.com or writing a review in Apple Podcasts, and it might become a future Watch This Tonight All-Star episode.
21 Sep 2022Zero Zero Zero (Amazon)00:13:03
The best show you've been sleeping on, Amazon Prime's TV series Zero, Zero, Zero is a stunning accomplishment that interweaves one story of a massive cocaine shipment across multiple countries, with a stellar international cast (including Gabriel Byrne, Dane Dehaan, Andrea Riseborough), haunting music from the Scottish rock band Mogwai, and assured, compelling direction from the great Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado). This show rocks, literally and figuratively. If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or anywhere you're listening, and subscribe for future episodes.
23 Sep 2022Andor (Disney+)00:17:00
Tony Gilroy, Tony Gilroy, Tony Gilroy. The unique circumstances of this Disney+ Star Wars streaming television show are that Tony came in off the success of Rogue One, with the creative freedom and backing to push Star Wars into real moral ambiguity, and insert his own unique authorial voice into the mix. He's arguably an ideal candidate, because Tony's storytelling is simultaneously so classical and so distinctively him. I love this show, and I explain why in this episode. Shoot me an email at dan@voyagemedia.com and let me know your thoughts on Andor, or anything else we're doing on the show. If you're enjoying the show, please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or anywhere you're listening, and subscribe for future episodes.
26 Sep 2022Den of Thieves00:12:32
The film equivalent of a charming fun criminal cousin coming to visit, Den of Thieves is Gerard Butler having the most pure joy of his career, unhinging his jaw to not just chew but completely consume the scenery, ably supported by Pablo Schreiber in what is effectively this film's version of the DeNiro role in Heat. While the movie has many similarities to that film, it still makes its own way, especially with a late third-act twist that demonstrates another layer to the entire narrative. What is your movie equivalent of hanging out with a friend who is fun but trouble? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, or Twitter (@BenamorDan), Instagram (watch_this_tonight) or our Facebook group. 28 Sep 2022American Gigolo (Showtime)00:11:30
We get all versions of Jon Bernthal here. Prison Jon Bernthal. Suave Jon Bernthal. Vulnerable Jon Bernthal. The great unexpected discovery of this Showtime series, American Gigolo, though, is the sparkling romantic chemistry between Jon Bernthal and Gretchen Mol, who are exploding off the screen in every moment they share. The show has some bold choices that may or may not work for all viewers, but there's certainly enough here to recommend a watch, particularly for Bernthal fans. Shoot me an email and let me know what you think at dan@voyagemedia.com, or @BenamorDan on Twitter, or watch_this_tonight on Instagram. Please leave us a five star review on Apple Podcasts if you're enjoying the show, and subscribe for future episodes.
30 Sep 2022Reboot (Hulu)00:12:52
Don't be thrown by the title, this show is fresh, funny, and surprisingly TV-MA at times in its humor. Given the pedigree (from Steve Levitan, co-creator of Modern Family, starring Keegan Michael Key, Judi Greer, Rachel Bloom, Paul Reiser, and Johnny Knoxville), we should never have doubted it. If you've got an itch for a great half-hour comedy, Reboot on Hulu is exactly that. Let me know your thoughts on it, or on the podcast, at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan on Twitter, or watch_this_tonight on Instagram.

03 Oct 2022This Is 40 (Netflix)00:09:51
Perhaps the best example of this subject, Judd Apatow's film This Is 40 is a completely different viewing experience if you watch it in your 20s (like I did when it first came out) or approaching 40 (like I am now). What to a younger viewer might seem frivolous or small in stakes or plotless, to an older viewer feels one thousand percent true to life. The movie is funny no matter what age you watch it, but even more so if you are closer to the ages of the lead characters. This is all not to mention an insanely stacked supporting cast, including Megan Fox, Chris O'Dowd, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Lena Dunham, Albert Brooks, Jon Lithgow and more, and how many of them catapulted to stardom after this film, or haven't done something like this since. What is the movie that plays way differently for YOU depending on what age you watch it? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), or watch_this_tonight (Instagram). Please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts if you're enjoying the show, and subscribe now for future episodes.
05 Oct 2022Last Seen Alive (Netflix)00:13:45
Some nights, you just want to watch Gerard Butler beat up a bunch of people to find his wife. Last Seen Alive, at time of recording, is the NUMBER ONE movie on Netflix. So apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way. Certainly, this is a programmer, but it's an elevated programmer film. It's got a great, what-would-you-do premise, a fast-paced and engaging plot, and a great cast of supporting actors (Jaimie Alexander, Russell Hornsby, Ethan Embry, Michael Irby) in addition to the reliably-great Gerard Butler. Let me know what you thought of this film at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), or watch_this_tonight (Instagram). If you're enjoying the show please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts and subscribe now for future episodes.
10 Oct 2022Snatch00:10:51
Found a fresh way into this, as I did with The Departed, I'm bringing you the top 5 lines that are in the Snatch script, which are NOT in the final film, as means to further illustrate what makes the movie so singular (Guy Ritchie's unique voice). I have probably watched Snatch 55 times. Is Snatch your favorite Guy Ritchie film? If not, what is? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, or @BenamorDan (Twitter) or watch_this_tonight (Instagram). Please leave a 5-star review of the show on Apple Podcasts if you're enjoying it, and subscribe for future episodes.
07 Oct 2022Greenland (HBO)00:11:40
A Gerard Butler nightcap that'll have you shaking your drink from the tension, this movie really surprised me. It overachieves in every way. Reportedly made for a 35 million dollar budget, it looks like a 100 million dollar film. A seemingly familiar premise is enlivened by a smart narrative tweak and incredible, carefully calibrated, maximum suspense at every turn. I was sleeping on Greenland, and I shouldn't have been (director Ric Roman Waugh and writer Chris Sparling are two of my favorites, not to mention it has a great late-game cameo by another favorite of mine, Holt McCallany). Let me know what other Gerard Butler films I should do for this little series at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter) or watch_this_tonight (Instagram). If you enjoy the show, do the show a solid and drop a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts. And subscribe now for future episodes.
12 Oct 2022Alaska Daily (Hulu)00:13:25
Rockstar creative team (pilot written and directed by Tom McCarthy, of Spotlight) lead what is in some ways like a TV sequel to the Oscar-winning film Spotlight, starring Hilary Swank as a hard-charging reporter who is embroiled in scandal and ships off to a small newspaper in Alaska, where she uncovers an epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women. Is it perfect? No. It wobbles out of the gate a little, but by the end of the pilot, this television series shows the promise of its creative team, and feels like a potential successor to great network dramas of old, like The West Wing, ER, The Practice, and so on. Let me know what you thought of Alaska Daily at dan@voyagemedia.com or reach out on Twitter (@BenamorDan) or Instagram (watch_this_tonight). Please rate and review and subscribe for future episodes, if you're enjoying the show.
14 Oct 2022The Black Phone00:11:08
If you missed this in theaters like me, and you were debating watching it now, definitely do it. The Black Phone is an instant horror classic, from Ethan Hawke's villain's iconic mask, to Scott Derrickson's strong direction (particularly of child actors), to the sharp writing by Scott and C. Robert Cargill, to the underlying brilliance of Joe Hill's short story which finds a fresh way into a ghost story camouflaged within a serial killer story. There are rumors of a sequel, and I hope it happens. Let me know what you think at dan@voyagemedia.com or @BenamorDan (Twitter) or watch_this_tonight (Instagram).
17 Oct 2022The Sopranos00:09:55
We're all trapped by our families. This is the central idea that makes The Sopranos great. I had no understanding of this as a 17-year-old, when I first tried to watch this television series. I had a much better understanding of it as a 33-year-old doing nighttime feedings of my newborn second child, which is when I binged the show in a couple months. What age did you watch The Sopranos? How did it work for you depending on the age you were at when you watched it? And do you agree with my theory on the ending, which I am bizarrely confident is totally correct? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, or @BenamorDan (Twitter) or watch_this_tonight (Instagram). Drop a 5-star rating if you're enjoying the podcast, leave a review and subscribe for future episodes.
19 Oct 2022Upgrade00:11:24
For Halloween, I wanted to give you an evergreen pick that is on my short-list of awesome movies not everyone has seen, Leigh Whannell's Upgrade, starring Logan Marshall-Green. What makes this movie so great is that it's kind of Saw meets a Jackie Chan movie, with everything that comparison entails (brutal twists, comic, inventive action). And if anything, the lighter touch the film has in spots only lulls you into a false sense of security about the ending to come. This is a great movie to watch during the Halloween season, and if you haven't seen it yet, I'm jealous you get to see it for the first time. Let me know your thoughts on Upgrade at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram). And please leave a 5-star rating on the show, if you're enjoying it.
21 Oct 2022The Watcher (Netflix)00:10:10
Who watches The Watcher? Apparently, a lot of people. This instant hit for Netflix benefits from a great, creepy, what-if-it-happened-to-you premise. But the real fun of it is the darkly subversive nature of the show's relationship to its main characters (Naomi Watts and Bobby Canavale's family) and the murderers' row (at times it feels like literally so) of stellar supporting actors (most notably Jennifer Coolidge doing excellent work, as well as Margo Martindale, Ricard Kind, Mia Farrow, Christopher McDonald, and more). Let me know what you think of The Watcher at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram). Did you agree with my highlight of the episode? Did you also notice the same things that bugged me? Send your thoughts, and rate, review and subscribe if you enjoy the podcast.
24 Oct 2022The Irishman (Netflix)00:16:19
Bizarrely a comfort food movie for me, I'd love to know if Martin Scorsese's The Irishman works similarly for you. Arguably handicapped because its massive length makes for a trickier watch on streaming, despite being nominated for 10 Oscars it still feels like The Irishman has gone slightly under the radar considering its budget (the film was made for a quarter of a billion dollars) and pedigree (Scorsese, DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino, Zaillian). I've found that the more times I watch the film, the more things I notice and love about it. Where did you land on The Irishman? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), and watch_this_tonight (Instagram). If you listen to and enjoy the show, please drop a five-star rating and a review, and subscribe for future episodes.
26 Oct 2022The Stranger (Netflix)00:11:13
A crime thriller that is arguably just as much an arthouse horror movie, this Netflix film takes an unexpected path into its story, inspired by an infamous true crime from Australia. Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris are tremendous in a nightmare version of Donnie Brasco, with strong shades of Zodiac. This is not going to be for everyone, but if you dig its dreamy, creepy mood, this is a unique, compelling film. Let me know what you thought of The Stranger at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) and now on TikTok @watchthistonightpodcast - and please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or anywhere you're listening if you're enjoying the show.
28 Oct 2022The Good Nurse (Netflix)00:13:55
Possibly the most prolific killer in American history. He didn't use a knife, or a gun. He used medication, and the hospital system. He killed people at their most vulnerable, and what makes this story so frightening is that anyone reading this could have been a victim of Charles Cullen if he was working at the hospital you were treated at. The Netflix film about this story, starring Oscar winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain, written by 1917's Krysty Wilson-Cairnes, directed by Tobias Lindholm, is based on Charles Graeber's extraordinary, insanely well-researched book about Charles Cullen, this killer nurse who hid in plain sight. I was really anticipating this film. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Reach out at dan@voyagemedia.com, @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok), @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram).

31 Oct 2022Barbarian OR An Ode To Justin Long00:10:20
Barbarian is an impossible movie to talk about without spoiling. So instead, I decided to talk about Justin Long, and why he might be horror cinema's most underrated and accomplished jack-of-all-trades, great as the wet-blanket boyfriend in Drag Me To Hell, the nightmarish victim of Tusk, and the loathsome misogynist of Barbarian. Is Justin Long secretly original horror cinema's MVP? Let me know your thoughts at dan@voyagemedia.com, @watchthistonightpodcast (Tik Tok), @BenamorDan (Twitter) and watch_this_tonight (Instagram). And please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts if you're enjoying the show.
02 Nov 2022The White Lotus (Season 2, HBO)00:13:52
Ahhh Italy. You don't have to have seen Season 1 of HBO's The White Lotus to enjoy season 2. Just hop on the boat with Michael Imperioli, Jennifer Coolidge, F. Murray Abraham, Aubrey Plaza, and Theo James and luxuriate in the Italian sun at another White Lotus resort, replete with troubled relationships, lust, existential crises, opulence, and of course some dead bodies as well. Are you watching? Did you watch Season 1? What are your thoughts on the new season? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram), @watchthistonightpodcast (Tik Tok). And please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts if you're enjoying the show, I'll read the review on-air and you'll have a lifetime (or maybe like a week) of good karma out in the universe.
04 Nov 2022Neighbors00:12:06
I have no memory of my first viewing of this film, because at the time I was (one of the only times in my entire life) under the influence of a substance the younger characters in this film adore. So it seemed like a great movie to revisit now, when I'm closer to the Seth Rogen character, vs. when I first saw the film (when I was closer to the Dave Franco character). Neighbors is an almost ideal movie to watch in your 20s, 30s, and 40s, because you'll relate to and enjoy different things about it depending on your age. The film is currently on HBO. I'd love to hear your comfort food movies, let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram), @watchthistonightpodcast (Tik Tok). Leave a rating of the show, and if you want to win the lottery (*winning the lottery not guaranteed*) please leave us a review of the show on Apple Podcasts, if you're enjoying the show.
07 Nov 2022Andor Hits Its Stride Midseason (Disney+)00:11:29
In an unprecedented turn of events, for the first time ever on Watch This Tonight, we're doing the same show, again, because Episode 9 of Andor is so good it immediately vaulted to being the number one show on television for me. The unconventional theme of the series, that no one will rebel against authority unless they are so oppressed they have absolutely no other choice, comes to fruition across the ensemble, from Stellan Skarsgaard's handler, to Diego Luna and Andy Serkis in a Squid Game like prison scenario, contrasted with the enthusiastic nightmare bureaucrats of the empire. Has Andor gained in dramatic power for you? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram), @watchthistonightpodcast (Tik Tok). Please do the show a major solid and leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts if you are enjoying the show.
09 Nov 2022Smile (Paramount+)00:12:09
Watch This Tonight gets out of the house for this episode, about the out-of-nowhere smash hit horror film Smile. Smile is just finishing up its theatrical run, so if it's still playing in your area I encourage you to seek it out, otherwise it should be available on streaming on Paramount+ and VOD rental within a few weeks from this recording. I can't think of a movie that better breaks down the subjective feeling of anxiety, and it elevates what could have been a throwaway gimmick into a legitimately powerful horror film, with a gonzo, terrifying, nightmare fuel ending. This is one of the better original films to break out at the box office in recent years, and well worth watching even for casual horror fans. A good movie to watch with the lights out at home, if you missed it in theaters.

11 Nov 2022Cabinet of Curiosities (Netflix)00:11:11
Come for my meet-cute encounter with Guillermo Del Toro, stay for discussion of his new Netflix anthology horror show, Cabinet of Curiosities. The first episode is a great evocation of the premise, with a creepy original story starring Tim Blake Nelson who buys the world's creepiest storage unit. The concern with a show like this is that it can be dashed off, B-level material from A-level creatives, but that's not the case here. Everyone is bringing their A game, the first episode is excellent, and this looks like a great way for excellent directors (Guillermo Navarro, Vincenzo Natali, Jennifer Kent) to get to do mini-movies with a beginning, middle and end on each episode. Highly recommended. As always please feel free to reach out on our various socials (@watchthistonightpodcast on TikTok, @BenamorDan on Twitter, watch_this_tonight on Instagram, and Watch This Tonight on Facebook).

14 Nov 2022Casino00:11:15
Recent events in California gambling have shown that the film Casino is not out of date. This movie, an unlikely cable TV all-star (how many times did this air on TNT? 10,000 times?) is one I understand more as I get older, particularly in regard to DeNiro's terrible bet on Sharon Stone's character (justice for Ginger? I find myself empathizing with her more and more on revisiting of the film). Pesci, Scorsese, DeNiro, Stone - this film is often considered the more minor entry in Scorsese's gangster oeuvre but I've watched it more times than any of his other films. Is this a Watch This Tonight all-star for you? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram), @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok). Please leave us a five-star review on Apple Podcasts and subscribe for future episodes.
16 Nov 2022Tulsa King (Paramount+)00:13:06
There was no way I wasn't going to do an episode on Tulsa King. I have been excitedly awaiting this show since it was announced - Terry Winter (The Sopranos) and Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown) working together on a show about a mobster starting over in Tulsa, starring Sylvester Stallone? How could this NOT work? Well... it breaks my heart to say, there are some issues. There's so much talent involved that this show is worth discussing, debating, and I'd love to hear what YOU think of it. 18 Nov 2022This Fool (Hulu)00:11:16
Continuing their winning streak, Hulu has another really funny half-hour comedy series, with This Fool. A simple but winning premise (straight-laced man who works in ex-con rehabilitation takes in his ex-con cousin), clever writing, and good-natured humor incorporating Latino culture. This and Reboot are two winners in half-hour comedy, and both are available now on Hulu.

21 Nov 2022Oldboy00:16:31
The gateway drug to Korea cinema. One of my favorite films of all time. By one of the leaders of Korea cinema (Park Chan-Wook) and starring one of its most accomplished actors (Choi Min-Sik). Includes incredible displays of cinematography, a haunting score, and one of the all-time WTF endings in film history. If you enjoy this film, check out the other films of Park Chan-Wook and other Korean superstar filmmakers like Bong Joon-Ho and Na Hong-Jin). A guest? On this show? Yes, for the first time in Watch This Tonight history, I’ve brought on a guest, Forbes writer and novelist Andy Frye (Ninety Days in The 90s), who joins the show to discuss his Watch This Tonight All-Star movie, Ice Cube and F. Gary Gray’s Friday. Andy first watched this film with a 40 in hand, smoking a joint… and now he’s about to show it to his 16-year-old son. We discuss the enduring legacy of the film. 25 Nov 20221899 (Netflix)00:10:32
A worthy successor to Lost. It only took 18 years. Seriously, 1899 is that rare combination of a great, spooky, intriguing premise, with a diverse, complex, ensemble cast, and an anything-goes sensibility that makes every turn of the plot more deliciously exciting. I love this show. Shout it from the rooftops (it's already #1 on Netflix). This is your new binge-worthy TV series.
28 Nov 2022Training Day00:14:13
To give you something you can't get elsewhere, I tracked down the screenplay for Training Day, and this episode, I bring you the most interesting things in the script for Training Day that were not in the final film. Did you know Jake was from Santa Clarita? And that his parents were junkies? And that there was an alternate ending, at Jake's house? Training Day is an all-time classic, and I found some intriguing nuggets that are just as good as the movie which were cut from the final film. Leave us a five-star rating if you're enjoying the podcast, and thanks for listening.
30 Nov 2022Dual (Hulu)00:22:55
An under-the-radar gem for those with off-kilter taste, the sci-fi film Dual is currently streaming on Hulu. Karen Gillan stars as a woman who commissions a clone of herself she must later try to kill when the clone threatens to take over her life. Riley Stearns has been making critically acclaimed indie movies for years now (Faults, The Art of Self-Defense) and this film clearly demonstrates a unique authorial voice with its bizarre but very engaging and effective tone. Pete Abeyta of the Middle Class Film Class podcast joins the show to discuss his pick for what to watch tonight (which I loved). You can follow Pete @TheRealPeeeete on Twitter, and find the Middle Class Film Class podcast anywhere you listen to podcasts (also on Facebook at Facebook.com/mcfcpodcast).
02 Dec 2022Echo 3 (Apple+)00:11:19
Apple+ brings their usual carte blanche budget production value and stellar ensemble of actors to this new military thriller series starring Michiel Huisman and Luke Evans, from Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty, Triple Frontier). Well-written, well-acted, well-directed, this is familiar genre material executed at a high level. Recommended for fans of the genre.

07 Dec 2022Fleishman is in Trouble (Hulu)00:11:46
Ignore the weak title and marketing that tells you nothing about this new TV show on FX/Hulu - the show is really good. It's a difficult show to market - because what's great about it is really in the details of the execution. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, the pilot is directed by the directing team from Little Miss Sunshine, and features a witty, funny, modern take on re-entering the dating world as a divorced man (with kids). This is a low-concept show that manages to somehow feel relatable and accessible despite being about super-rich people (they make fun of Jesse Eisenberg for being "only" a doctor). Unexpectedly risque as well, at least from the pilot, this is almost like Sex In The City starring Jesse Eisenberg, and is about as funny and awkward as that description would suggest. Really curious to hear what you think of this one.

09 Dec 2022White Lotus Ouroboros Double Header (HBO)00:08:08
An innovative White Lous episode that will eat its own tail. If you listen PRIOR to the release of the Season 2 finale of White Lotus, you'll hear my predictions for the finale. If you listen on Monday night or later AFTER the Season 2 finale of White Lotus airs, you'll hear my predictions AND my report card on how I did, what I got right and wrong about the finale. 14 Dec 2022Nope00:28:06

Shane Rogers from the podcast Midnight Facts For Insomniacs joins the podcast to discuss his controversial favorite Jordan Peele film (Us), how Eddie Murphy's stand-up comedy relates to Nope, and our mutual enthusiasm for the pure cinema moments of this film starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, now streaming on Peacock and available to rent on VOD.
16 Dec 2022Emily The Criminal (Netflix)00:32:26
Producer Garrick Dion (Whiplash, Nightcrawler) joins the podcast to discuss John Patton Ford's excellent independent film Emily The Criminal, starring Aubrey Plaza (having a hell of a year between this and The White Lotus). This is exactly the kind of movie we do this show for. Was under the radar, just popped up on Netflix, and has consistently gotten great reviews. Deservedly so, because this is a tight, attention-grabbing, compelling character study of one woman's exhilarating journey to the dark side (that for her, is actually not dark). In some ways, it's own version of Breaking Bad, but in a distinctive style and narrative. If you're on the hunt for a good movie to watch on Netflix, look no further tonight.

19 Dec 2022The Banshees Of Inisherin (HBO)00:10:42
Martin McDonagh's new film starring Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell, running back the same central trio from In Bruges. But this movie is very different from In Bruges. It's beautiful and often funny but also melancholy, philosphical and exisential. Now available on HBOMax, this is absolutely worth watching, but you may want to alter your expectations going in. A memorable, surprisingly emotionally poignant film. What did you think of The Banshees Of Inisherin? Let me know - reach out at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram, or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok). 23 Dec 2022There Will Be Blood00:15:54
I last saw this film as a naive, innocent college student. Watching it again, 15 years later, I discovered that Daniel Day Lewis' character does have an actual arc, and real human emotions, as opposed to being a straight up sociopath, if you watch the film closely. The father-son material hits me very differently now. Time has also made this Paul Thomas Anderson film even better, in comparison to our current film scene (and to the detriment of Paramount Vantage, rest in peace). A surprisingly fun movie to revisit despite its bleakness, this is one of my favorite films of all time.

26 Dec 2022Top Three Movies Of The Year00:09:36
A guarantee: you will not predict the number one selection. As much a dissection of top films of the year as a referundum on the state of cinema in 2022 vs. prior years. I'd really love to know YOUR favorite film of 2022, your number one selection - email me at dan@voyagemedia.com, or reach out on social media @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok). Would love to read and react to your favorite film of 2022 on a subsequent episode. Thanks for listening.
28 Dec 2022Glass Onion (Netflix)00:16:01
Rian Johnson's follow-up to Knives Out, this film has a killer cast (Ed Norton, Daniel Craig, Janelle Monae, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., and Kathryn Hahn), impeccably sharp, impish, clever writing, and beautiful locations populated by clueless rich jerks set against a murder mystery (it's White Lotus Season 3 in movie form). A straight up winter delight, I expect this film to become the most popular film in Netflix history because anyone can watch it and be entertained, and everyone needs something to watch during this holiday week. Also stay tuned for a tease for a future episode requested in a listener review. If you review the show on Apple Podcasts and request a film or TV show for me to cover, I will do so in a future episode. Thanks for listening.
30 Dec 2022Avatar: The Way of Water00:15:01
My biggest surprise of the year, since I'm on record as not being a fan of the first film. James Cameron's movie event of the year, Avatar: The Way of Water is a massive improvement over the first film. The themes of environmentalism and spirituality are better integrated into the plot and characters, the villain (all hail the great Stephen Lang) is now nuanced and complex, it's better written top-to-bottom, it's a great movie about family, the action is more effective, the world-building is more complex. It is long as hell, but for me personally the time went by in a flash. Did this movie work for you? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram), or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok). And if you're enjoying the show, please leave a five star review on Apple Podcasts and request a film or TV show for me to cover in the podcast. Thank you for listening.
02 Jan 2023Magnolia00:14:17
A 3-hour raw nerve ending, Magnolia is considered a divisive film, but looking back at it now, it has gained in power over the years since it was released (especially depending on what age you are when you watched it). Every minute of this movie is an intense, screaming, crying, nervous breakdown - and yet it's ultimately an upbeat message in the end. Bonus points for me sharing an extremely embarassing Magnolia-esque scene from my own life. Did you have a Magnolia moment in your own life? Let me know at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram), or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok). This episode was a listener request - if you'd like to pick a movie or TV show covered on the show, all you need to do is write a review of the podcast on Apple Podcasts, and name the film or TV show you'd like me to cover. Thanks for listening.
04 Jan 2023In The Mood For: Disreputable Crime Finds00:09:34
Part of a new series, sub-genres of films you're in the mood for - this episode centers on disreputable crime films, scuzzy, sleazy, crime movies that put you into a dark, amoral world. Films discussed include Wrath Of Man (Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham, with an unheralded fantastic Scott Eastwood performance), The Tax Collector (David Ayer and Shia LaBeouf) and Sicario: Day of The Soldado (Stefano Sollima, Taylor Sheridan, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro). Let me know your favorite disreputable crime film at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok).
06 Jan 2023In The Mood For: Scifi Gems00:12:37
Continuing our series of sub-genres of movies you're in the mood for, on this episode we're discussing sci-fi gems, science fiction films you might not have seen. Sci-fi has a legacy of movies that are interesting, unique, with overqualified casts, and out-there ideas that just get lost for whatever reason. Films discussed include Underwater, the Kirsten Stewart film (that I'll stand on the table for all day as a legitimately good movie), Captive State (Andor before Andor, a movie very few people saw but that has really inventive ideas), and In The Shadow of The Moon (a Netflix film that unfortunately disappeared into the crowd, by the great Jim Mickle, that is extremely original). I'd love to hear about your sci-fi gems. You can reach me at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) or @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok).
09 Jan 2023In The Mood For: Most F'd Up Movies Imaginable00:12:24
Some people like taking a walk on the wild side. That's where this sub-genre comes in, the most f'd up movies imaginable. This is the last in our "in the mood for" series. Supremely f'd up movies discussed include The Empty Man (one of the great cult movies, literally and figuratively, of the last 5 years, which announces a stellar new filmmaker in David Prior), Annihilation (the incredibly freaky Alex Garland and Natalie Portman film), and The Perfection (a film by the always daring and fun Richard Shepard, of The Matador, which has a jaw-dropping insane ending). Let me know your most f'd up movies imaginable at dan@voyagemedia.com, @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) and @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok). Thanks for listening.
11 Jan 2023The Menu (HBO)00:27:39
The Menu (now on HBOMax) uses brutal satire to bring to the surface the thematic ideas about class we’ve seen recently in other films and TV series like White Lotus, The Glass Onion, and Severance. A rare instance of a wild high concept contained movie that has a great cast (Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor Joy, John Leguizamo, Nicholas Hoult), miles of plot to spare, goes for gonzo twists without hesitation, yet never feels padded or absurdist for its own sake. Just a really entertaining, razor sharp, choke on your foie gras satirical thriller. Guest journalist/podcaster/actor Juan Ayala joins the podcast to discuss the film, and the most expensive meals we’ve ever had (and if they were worth it).

13 Jan 2023You Were Right About... Severance (Apple+)00:26:12
You ever refuse to watch something everyone says is good? I did that with the Apple+ television series Severance, until TV writer Kendall Lampkin (who has worked on JJ Abrams and Dean Devlin TV shows) passionately advocated for Severance on a previous episode. I watched it, I was blown away, I stood up like I was watching a live sporting event by the finale, and we discuss it on this episode. Kendall has read the original pilot and discusses how it changed (drastically) before becoming the version ultimately on screen. We start spoiler free if you haven't seen Severance, and then announce our shift to spoilers and cover the many "holy shit" moments of Season 1.

16 Jan 2023The Outfit (Amazon)00:25:29
Film journalist Mark London Williams joins the podcast to discuss the Mark Rylance starrer The Outfit, currently available on Amazon Prime. This is the film equivalent of going to a Broadway play to see a master actor work their craft. It’s a showcase vehicle for Mark Rylance start to finish. While the underlying plot, under scrutiny, may face some questions (we discuss that in the spoiler section) the film is ultimately a satisfying, entertaining watch, almost like some forgotten Hitchcock film that was discovered, it feels timeless in that way. If there’s a film or TV series you’d like for us to cover on the podcast, leave a review on Apple Podcasts and mention it.

18 Jan 2023The Last Of Us (HBO)00:13:08
Fungus among us. If you had no familiarity with the video game that the new HBO series The Last Of Us is based on, you might have some concern this is another zombie post-apocalyptic thing. But it has a unique wrinkle on that formula that sets it apart. And beyond that, it is everything you could hope for from a prestige HBO series - stellar actors (Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Anna Torv), incredible production value, and great writing and directing (continuing the Craig Mazin renaissance started by Chernobyl). The first sequence, basically the first third of the pilot, is can't-look-away great. After that I was a bit more mixed than most, but still very engaged and very much looking forward to the next episode. Based on the pedigree of everyone involved and the promise of what I've seen so far, I think there's a real chance this could become one of the best TV shows to watch right now.

20 Jan 2023American Pie00:26:36
Genevieve Hassan joins the podcast to bring a female perspective to American Pie. Genevieve has also previously interviewed Thomas Ian Nichols (who plays Kevin in the film) on her podcast, Celebrity Catch Up: Life After That Thing You Did and shares some behind the scenes details from him on the possibility of a new film in the series. I first saw this film as a teenager, in someone's house, in secret, as the makers of the film likely intended. Genevieve and I discuss what it's like watching the film today, and how the movie, while certainly aged in some ways, is surprisingly balanced, sweet-natured, bizarrely innocent compared to today's culture regarding sexuality, and most importantly, still funny as hell. 25 Jan 2023The Descent00:40:47
What did Juno do that was that bad? S.A. Bradley of the Hellbent For Horror podcast joins the show for an unlikely candidate for our longest episode of all time - Neil Marshall's spelunking-gone-wrong film, The Descent. We dive deep into the echoes of Deliverance (almost literally in the case of a radio station switch bit early in the film), Neil's career trajectory, the drastic difference in me viewing the film in my college years vs. today, the extraordinary accomplishment of a full 45 minutes of straight drama before the monsters appear, and just generally marvel at the incredible craftsmanship of this modern classic.

27 Jan 2023Accused (Hulu)00:10:26
Some cream of the network TV crop here, with the new Fox show Accused (available on Hulu). Michael Chiklis! Jill Henessey! Robert Wisdom! The Homeland team (Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa, Michael Cuesta)! With this collection of talent in front of and behind the camera, it stands to reason that Accused is going to be better than the average network TV crime procedural. This may also explain its surprisingly massive ratings success. If you are not in the mood for a bigger commitment like a serialized series or a film, this is a great appetizer-sized commitment with stand-alone anthology episodes. The first episode goes pretty bold with how it integrates Chiklis' character with a We Need To Talk About Kevin kind of son.

30 Jan 2023The Jon Bernthal Episode00:11:29
"Happy Wayne Jenkins Day, Motherf**kers" - it's the Jon Bernthal Episode. First, I uncovered a bizarre, incredible series of coincidences (I swear I'm not making this up) that demonstrate that to my great surprise Jon Bernthal and I have more in common than I realized. Then, I break down my top 3 Jon Bernthal performances you need to watch. Jon has been steadily rising up through the ranks of actors (much as he did in Russian acting school) and has amassed an incredible lineup of performances in a wide range of movies and TV shows.

01 Feb 2023Vengeance (Amazon)00:12:38
Douchebag Goes West... is one of the would-be titles for the podcast BJ Novak is making in this unusual film, now available on Amazon Prime, also starring Ashton Kutcher and Boyd Holbrook. Kind of a mystery, kind of a cultural commentary drama, very much about the collision between a condescending New Yorker and the Texans he embeds with to investigate a murder, this is kind of undefinable in a good way, and portends an exciting future for BJ Novak as a filmmaker. Your mileage may vary on the ending. I'd love to know what you think of this movie.

03 Feb 2023Mayor of Kingstown Season 2 (Paramount+)00:12:14
If you listen carefully, you can hear me shouting in deranged glee, because Mayor Of Kingstown is back for Season 2. To my extreme joy, the show is not only back and better than ever, but has surprisingly taken up the mantle of The Shield, as a pitch black crime drama with deep emotional chords, shocking explosions of violence, and gallows humor. Jeremy Renner's real-life recent brush with death only makes it more impactful to see him fully in his element here. Bizarrely, the series has consistently gotten mixed to negative reviews from television critics. But look at the audience score on RottenTomatoes and you'll see there is a passionate fan base out there for this series.

That said, I rarely hear people talk about it. Are you watching Mayor Of Kingstown? If so, let me know what you think of it! You can reach me @BenamorDan (Twitter), watch_this_tonight (Instagram) and @watchthistonightpodcast (TikTok) or join our Facebook group.

06 Feb 2023The Frank Grillo Episode00:09:21
Frank Grillo is one of the hardest-working actors, but he's also legitimately a masterful actor. In this episode, I run down his three movies you have to watch. These three films clearly demonstrate that, in addition to being a credible cinematic tough guy, Frank is capable of delivering world-class acting craft.

What's exciting about this episode, and likely a side effect of Frank doing so many films, is that I'm pretty confident you may not have seen at least two out of the three films I'm going to recommend. Frank has a deep catalogue but these are the gems I feel have been a bit lost to cinematic time and not appreciated enough.

08 Feb 2023Shrinking (Apple+)00:12:10
If you really miss Forgetting Sarah Marshall Jason Segel - look no further than the new Apple+ TV series Shrinking, co-starring Harrison Ford (who, despite being 80+, still has a movie-star shirtless scene in the pilot). This show is warm, it’s fun to be with these characters, it is amiable yet messy in a way you might describe as Apatow-an.

10 Feb 2023A Year With The Room00:31:40
Adam Rosen has edited a series of essays about the greatest bad/good film ever, The Room. A cult phenomenon (I've personally attended one of its Los Angeles Rocky Horror Picture Show style screenings), this movie is objectively problematic, but subjectively extraordinarily entertaining. It is surreal, earnest, hilarious, nonsensical, confusing, and just straight up great. Adam and I discuss buying the film from what is likely Tommy Wiseau's alter ego Raoul, how the movie is the film version of your first time having sex, Adam's personal relationship with the actor who played Chris R, and what he's learned from watching the film 20 times.

The book is "You Are Tearing Me Apart, Lisa!: The Year's Work on The Room, the Worst Movie Ever Made (The Year's Work: Studies in Fan Culture and Cultural Theory)" - available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/product/0253062721?ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&tag=indiunivpres-20 You can also find Adam's website here: https://www.adammrosen.com/

13 Feb 2023The Chiwetel Ejiofor Episode00:10:45
Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of my favorite working actors, with an insane amount of range that David Mamet thought was “impossible” - he’s also part of the school of British actors who are able to do American accents so well they frequently play Americans without any trace of natural accent. In this episode, I rundown my 3 Chiwetel Ejiofor movies you need to watch, and discover that his upcoming directorial debut (currently filming) is based on a relatively obscure book I read and loved, which should make for another excellent project for Chiwetel.

15 Feb 2023The Ice Road (Netflix)00:16:38
Our new Netflix Roulette feature came up with the Liam Neeson film The Ice Road. When you need a grizzled, down-on-his-luck trucker to drive on a melting ice road to deliver vital equipment to rescue trapped miners… look no further than Liam Neeson.

Part of this Netflix Roulette new episodic feature we’re doing is that I’m covering the movie no matter what. In some ways, this makes this episode more fun, because The Ice Road is a messier movie than we usually do on the show. It’s 30% grounded, well-researched, man vs. nature film, 30% Michael Bay extravaganza on a budget and 40% diesel oil. Cue ZZ Top.

In all seriousness the collision between grounded and high-octane action is both the fun of the film and arguably it’s flaw as well. Listen in to find out why.

17 Feb 2023Robert Duvall's Consiglieri Adam Prince on Godfather II and Duvall Stories00:45:51
Adam Prince, former Director of Development for Robert Duvall’s production company, joins the podcast to discuss the great Robert Duvall in general, his perhaps lesser-known anarchic sense of humor in specific (Duvall apparently was a legendary practitioner of mooning in his younger days), his world-class acting talent, and his precise, in-the-moment methodology, in specific.

We cover general Duvall material in the front half, and then specifically discuss Duvall’s repeat-viewing-rewarding performance in The Godfather Part II in the back half.

Duvall might be my favorite actor of all time, and it was a real treat to get a direct, one-to-one report of many years at Duvall’s side from Adam, in what became our longest episode ever of the podcast.

20 Feb 2023Synchronic (Netflix)00:11:44
Another spin of the Netflix roulette wheel, this is Synchronic, from the trippy filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, it is reminiscent of their previous film The Endless but with a bigger canvas and bigger names (Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan). An almost-impossible movie to market, which is likely why you haven't seen it either. Super-weird, but yet surprisingly grounded-feeling, Justin and Aaron have a unique ability to make you feel like you are witnessing something magical in real life. Does the whole movie work? 22 Feb 2023Knock At The Cabin (Peacock)00:32:14
Two resident Shymalan-heads here just choppping it up. My guest this episode is screenwriter Phil Clarke, and we discuss M. Night's latest film Knock At The Cabin, starring Dave Bautista. Would this movie be 45-seconds-long if it was my family? Are we sure The Village wasn't great (we both defend it)? Did Shymalan's divergence from the source book improve or hurt the story? Why is this movie already out on VOD (it is, I checked)? Is Shymalan kind of the last man standing making genre films that aren't 200M bonanzas or 2M indies?

24 Feb 2023In The Mood For: A Great Documentary00:11:11
Sometimes you're in the mood for a great documentary, something that will teach you about a subject, enrich you as a person, and still entertain you. A bad documentary is like a homework assignment. 27 Feb 2023Sharper (Apple+)00:13:33
Apple+ keeps throwing up impressive content. This is a movie that is impossible to market, and I almost didn’t watch it for that reason. I’m glad I did. Sharper is an incredibly written film that reminds me of great con films of the past, but has its own clever, unique structure. It also has a great cast (Jon Lithgow, Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan) and is directed with great style and flair. I had a great time watching this film and was very impressed with the complexity (yet without it being confusing) of its plot. I was very entertained by it.

01 Mar 2023Gladiator (A Deep Dive Into One Of The Most Troubled Productions Of All Time)00:17:00
Rather than do a straight Gladiator episode, I decided to go deep on the notoriously troubled production of the film, as well as touch on recent news about the sequel starring Paul Mescal, AND drop some insane true history facts about the absolutely deranged things that went on in the real Colosseum, including a lot of grisly spectacles so unhinged they could not possibly have been in the film. Plus a bit of impromptu theme-songing. Enjoy.

03 Mar 2023The Consultant (Amazon)00:11:36
Christoph Waltz stars in the new Amazon Prime series The Consultant, a bizarre show that I admittedly almost bailed on after the pilot, only for it to completely redeem itself for me with a strong second episode that manages to crystallize all its seemingly disparate elements into an engaging nightmare boss slash Whiplash-the-TV-series format, that totally worked for me. A dark sense of humor and a reliably great performance by Waltz make this a fun watch, especially if you’ve ever had a super-demanding job. But my advice is to seriously consider skipping the pilot entirely and just start on Episode 2.

06 Mar 2023Contact (Behind The Scenes Of The Kindest "Cursed" Movie Production)00:17:14
Contact - I went deep behind the scenes on this, the surprisingly tense creation of one of the most altruistic, life-affirming movies ever - later to cause lawsuits from Francis Ford Coppola and George Miller. Key creatives at all levels (cast, crew, writers, directors) differed wildly on the best way to tell the story. The film of an entire scene involving thousands of extras was destroyed. Somehow, what emerged was a great movie, one of the great alien contact films ever made.

Do you like Contact? It is surprisingly divisive, but I personally adore this film. I'd love to know what you think of it.

08 Mar 2023Babylon (Paramount+)00:14:56
Don't be put off by the mixed critical reaction, running time and box office performance - Babylon is FUN, exhilirating, often funny, and perhaps most importantly never boring. It's big and messy and crazy, but I kind of loved it. If you love movies, I don't know how you can not get some enjoyment out of this film. Currently streaming on Paramount+, or available to rent on VOD. I was on the fence about watching it because it seems like it got such a mixed response, but let me tell you - get off the fence and watch it. This film, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and a ton of other great actors, is a film that deserves to be seen at least once, to make up your own mind about.

10 Mar 2023Unforgiven (Making “Trash Like This” Into The Best Western In Film History)00:17:19
The reader report on the script for Unforgiven is one of the most scathing critiques I’ve ever read. I was able to find the original document on the internet, and it is the central part of this episode, as we break down why Sonia Chernus, an accomplished writer of Westerns herself, was so wrong about this Best Picture winning Clint Eastwood film, originally titled "The Cut Whore Killings" (this may have influenced the original reception of the script, understandably). As we've found on previous episodes going behind the scenes, the writer of the screenplay, David Webb Peoples, did not initially like what became arguably the most quoted line of his own film. I also found the original alternate ending in the production draft of the screenplay, and read it on this episode.

15 Mar 2023The Last Of Us Season One (HBO)00:11:57
TV's most depressing show we can't stop watching, The Last Of Us has been a massive hit for HBO. Season One concludes, fittingly, with the most upsetting episode yet! All this being said, the execution is so extraordinary that watching the series has been compelling throughout. This is an episode that demands discussion, framed around a horrifying dilemma. I'm not sure I went with it, but I am sure I love the conversation it has sparked. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann really delivered something people will have no choice but to react to. And this choice fundamentally changes how Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal's characters (and performances) go forward. I will likely be watching Season 2 and weeping along with everyone else.

22 Mar 2023Taken ("Donkey" and "Shrek" making a would-be-straight-to-video-movie)00:12:37
Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, who are basically their own French/American buddy cop film and trade jabs at each other as often as they collaborate on scripts, wrote Taken as part of a bread-and-butter of lower budget action films meant to prop up Besson's production company. Its success was just as surprising to Liam Neeson, who took the part primarily to take a vacation in France and have fun with the stunt guys, and thought his iconic speech was corny. Liam would later menace Maggie Grace's ex-boyfriend in-character with a version of the speech. There was also a guy who claimed to have inspired the part, who was later arrested by the FBI.
