Mark, Christopher and Chris discuss the dark and classic episode from Season 4, My Ellen. My Ellen is the 3rd episode in the 4th Season and First aired on September 26, 1977.

Memorable Quotes: Eloise Taylor: I asked God for a miracle today. I prayed by my baby’s grave. I asked him to make her alive today. He can do that. He’s done greater things than that. Reverend Robert Alden: Eloise, it’s not… Eloise Taylor: Don’t tell me it’s not my place to question God. They’re covering my baby out there with dirt. It’ll be so dark… My Ellen was always so afraid of the dark. God doesn’t care about me and God doesn’t care about Ellen. Don’t you come around here no more. No more! Cal Taylor: Eloise… Reverend Robert Alden: It’s alright. I’ll go. Eloise Taylor: [Picks up bible] And take your damn book with you! [throws Bible at him]

For this episode of Walnut GroveCast I am joined by the amazing Susan King!

Bare-foot bumpkin Luke Sims and his hunky dad Adam, arrive in Walnut Grove. Adam is a pig farmer, (and according to Willie, “he raises hogs too”…. as will be evident at the Olson’s dinner table when Luke joins them for a meal) Adam and son stop by the schoolhouse so that Luke can get some book learnin’ and have a “women’s touch” in his life. We discover Adam is a widower and Miss Beadle instantaneously has the hots for him. Not knowing her history, Luke takes a shine to Nellie and their relationship progresses. Harriet catches them out late one night and seeks Miss Beadle’s help in stopping their romance as it is effecting Nellie’s school work. Miss Beadle protests at first but quickly realizes this is a great opportunity to see hunky Adam again Luke decides to buy Nellie a ring for her birthday, using Mary to assist him, misunderstandings galore occur with Nellie angry telling her mother to “SHUT UP” as she explains to Nellie that “ Luke bought a ring for Mary and men are fickle as weather vanes”. Luke shows up at the door on her birthday with presents in tow and the misunderstanding is cleared up. Luke, Nellie, Adam and Miss Eva Beadle spend time together picnicking, etc. and Adam proposes to Eva. She wants to think about it because of her age and school responsibilities. While pondering Adams proposal, Nellie asks Ms. Beadle about marriage (Age etc.) Miss B thinks she is talking about her, but in reality, she is contemplating Luke’s proposal to her. Both Nellie and Eva decide to wed the Sims men, Eva telling Adam in a sweet moment at his house, Nellie, and Luke grabbing a suitcase, hopping on the Oleson’s buckboard and driving to sleepy-eye to elope. Hilarity ensues as Adam, Ms. Beadle and the Oleson’s (with a rifle in tow) track them down to a hotel. Harriet’s request? “Nels, make her a widow!” They all go back to the JP and Nellie and Luke get “unmarried”. While Adam and Ms. Beadle are there at the JP, they decide to marry….and with the exception of the JP and his wife who have been continuously awoken all night long…they live happily ever after.

Susan and Mark discuss the wonderful Back to School episode from Season 6.  This continues our #nellipalooza collection of shows…enjoy!

Laura, Albert and Carrie are beginning a new school year and many changes are in store on the 6th season of Little House on the Prairie . Nellie graduates from school and becomes the reluctant owner of a hotel and restaurant. The new characters of Almanzo and Eliza Jane Wilder enter in as the new School Teacher and the love of Laura’s life.

Charles injures himself and Caroline goes to work as a cook in Nellie’s restaurant.

Laura and Nellie are at their competitive best for Almanzo’s affections, with Harriet helping by pressuring him into dinner with her daughter. Because neither she nor Nellie can cook, Laura is all too willing (with ulterior motives) to prepare Almanzo’s favorite dish for her.

In a hurry to grow up and win Almanzo’s heart. Laura believes she will officially be an adult if she can pass her school and teachers exams. In only an optimism that Charlie Brown trusting Lucy to hold that football can understand, Laura asks Nellie for help.

This episode climaxes with mud wrestling, a couple of punches in the face and Laura’s realization that although she is approaching womanhood, like all of us, in many ways she is still a little girl, and no matter how much she matures, she will always be half-pint

Merry Christmas (or XMAS) everyone! 2019 is coming to an end in about a week and I wanted to release one last episode for you guys and gals.  I feel I have written these same words several times since Thanksgiving so I will make it brief.    2020 is going to be a really fun year for Walnut GroveCast and there will be interviews with the cast members that I can trick into coming onto the show, more giveaways and anything else that might pop into my head! In 2019 specifically, I have built many friendships within this small community and I am glad to see that many friendships have flourished within the community members, there have been celebrations, tragic losses and bickering and it truly feels like a solid community of wackos who I can say without a doubt are ‘My People”  …mission accomplished!  I am also happy to report that unlike many other LHOTP groups, the people in WGC seem to have a love of the art of grammar and spelling (and cipherin’).     Above all of that I can’t thank the people who help with the finances associated to hosting the show and general costs that seem to be never ending. It means a lot to me that I am not the only crazy one who is willing to put time, effort and money into such a fun project! 2020 is going to be another server move which should not effect you at all but it means I get to do a lot of work, work that I truly love.  Think of me as Isaac in The Craftman, except I’m not quite that old….yet.

This episode may be our longest clocking in at 2 hours, 36 minutes and 31 seconds!

Bless All the Dear Children and it originally aired on December 17, 1984.  I am joined by Mrs. Kim Layer of The Florida Layer’s who, along with me had never seen this hard to find Little House on the Prairie TV Movie.

“During preparations for a Christmas baby, Rose Wilder is kidnapped by a woman who recently lost her child. While looking for Rose, Laura, Almanzo, and Mr Edwards meet a lonely orphan boy who ends up living with that woman.”

I hope you enjoy this as much as we did!

See you next year!

 – Mark

Episode 72

Become a Patron!

In this episode I am joined by the multi-talented Kim Layer to review the tear jerker, lump in the throat episode, Stone Soup.  Stone Soup first aired on January 18, 1982 and although they were going through a heatwave in this episode, that same week in NY and much of the nation we were having record breaking freezing weather as can be read at this link from the NY Times

 https://www.nytimes.com/1982/01/11/us/record-breaking-cold-leaves-9-dead-in-us.html

Record Low Predicted in City

In New York City the temperature fell to 6 degrees and continued to drop; for all but the intrepid, it was a day to stay indoors. Thousands of New Yorkers from all parts of the city filed complaints with the Housing Department about lack of heat or hot water. The National Weather Service predicted that the temperature might match or fall below the record low of 3 degrees Monday. (Page B1.)

In Milwaukee the mercury sank to 25 below, also setting a record. In Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – the coldest spot in the nation at 36 below – and Fargo, N.D., the wind-chill factor pushed temperatures to 98 degrees below zero.

The situation was most critical in the Great Lakes region as an Arctic air mass rolled across the Canadian border. In Chicago, winds of 35 to 60 miles an hour made it feel like 81 below, the National Weather Service said. ”This is a real emergency,” Mayor Jane M. Byrne of Chicago said as she as she convened a meeting of all city department heads to make plans for dealing with the cold, which is expected to continue through most of the week.”

Well, back in California, er, I mean Minnesota it was sweltering! Stone Soup was the first time I remember Melissa Gilbert having the opportunity to stretch out as an actor and I feel she did very well!

I hope you enjoy this episode and a big thank you to Kim for joining me to review!

17 Jan 2020Sylvia

Episode 73

Become a Patron!

Sylvia had 2 parts which originally aired on February 9 and February 16 (just coming off of Valentine’s Day, Yikes!) in 1981. Since the podcast started this has been one of the most requested episodes to review. Please note that we will be reviewing Sylvia again, I feel it is a sad and crazy series of episodes and deserves different input from different people.

I asked Psychologist Dr. Lindsay Weisner from the Neurotic Nourishment Podcast if she would come onto the show to discuss the troubling and dark episode. Dr. Weisner works largely with adults struggling with anxiety and teenagers with suicidal ideation so when she agreed to review the 2 parter I was floored.  Having Dr. Weisner join me was a true honor and I really cannot thank her enough.  I think we did a good job of capturing the craziness of these episodes and hope you all enjoy it.

I wish I had a camera on Dr. Weisner’s face when I asked, “Hey Lindsay, I do a podcast about Little House on the Prairie, would you want to come on and discuss the ‘rape episode’?” Her face was a mix of, “what did he just say?” and “is this a joke?”

Nope not a joke!

BTW her podcast, Neurotic Nourishment Podcast is really amazing, honest and blunt, I can’t recommend it more! Dr. Weisner also talks about the book she is releasing, Ten Steps To Finding Happy: A Guide to Permanent Satisfaction which has quite the buzz around it and personally I can’t wait to read it, even if I am already pretty happy

Here are links and if you could even share the links it would be appreciated.

Episode 79

Become a Patron!

Hi all, Kim Layer here!

Join us as Leah Mitchell, Mark Jeacoma and I celebrate Founder’s Day just one day after Walnut Grove, Minnesota’s actual Founder’s Day!

Founders Day originally aired on May 7, 1975

We declare that this week should be FOUNDERS WEEK for Walnut Grove!

Although Walnut Grove was founded in 1840, it wasn’t incorporated until March 18, 1879. The name came from the beautiful grove of walnut trees along the banks of Plum Creek. The first village officials were: Elias Bedal, president; T. Quartan, J. Leo and C. Clementson, trustees; and Charles Ingalls, justice of peace.

“Walnut Grove’s Founder’s Day festivities promise fun and friendly competition… for all except aging logger and “Bull of the Woods” Jim Tyler, who secretly fears losing the log chopping contest, and with it his self-respect, to a younger, stronger Charles Ingalls.”

We had a blast recording this episode just a few hours ago and we look forward to many more reviews in the coming weeks.

The story focuses on Charles’ efforts to patent the table and have it mass produced. However, a ruthless businessman is successful in a bid to steal the patent and snare an ill-gotten profit, forcing Charles to realize that his family, and not the tables, are his greatest legacy. ”

Town Party, Country Party was originally released on October 30, 1974

*note – I really did lose this recording after about 20 minutes in and Megan was incredibly understanding and we started over!  I am still embarrassed by that!

“Laura befriends Olga, a girl crippled from birth with one leg shorter than the other and who, as a result, is teased by Nellie and often left out of the other children’s games. But when Charles comes up with a way to help Olga walk more normally, he meets unexpected resistance…from Olga’s over-protective father. “

Dark Sage was originally released on October 26, 1981

“Dr. Baker is enthusiastic about his new assistant, a young university-trained physician named Caleb LeDoux … until he realizes he is black. The Ingalls family are among the few to accept Dr. LeDoux, while others’ reactions range from prejudice to outright racism. Even Dr. Baker has a tough time concealing his prejudice. Then, a pregnant white woman is suffering from complications and must rely on LeDoux to save her life, but the woman’s racist husband refuses to cooperate and Charles must intervene. The surgery is a success and both woman and her baby son are fine; Dr. Baker is stunned and realizes he must deal with his own prejudice … by going all out to convince Dr. LeDoux to stay when he threatens to leave the community. “

This episode was recorded way back in December – it was the first night of Chanukah and Kim Layer joined me to discuss the emotional episode Soldier’s Return.  This episode deals with PTSD in a time when little was understood and not much more than medicating the problem existed. This episode also deals with opiate addiction and the struggles associated with it.

Soldier’s Return was originally released on March 24, 1976

“Coming home after 12 years of performing with a busy Philadelphia orchestra, Mrs. Whipple’s troubled son, Granville, hopes that the peace of Walnut Grove will help him shake the nightmares and the morphine addiction that resulted from an incident during the Civil War Battle of Shiloh.”

22 Jul 2020As Long as We’re Together Part 1

Episode 98

Become a Patron!

A Harvest of Friends first aired on September 11, 1974 and precisely 4 years later, the 5th Season of Little House on the Prairie would air. Season 5 brings us several topics and scenarios such as the introduction of a pickpocket named Albert, dealing with obesity, racism, a child who is blinded by the measles (and one who is “blinded” by falling out of a tree), anthrax, the death of one of the founders of Walnut Grove, Jews in Walnut Grove, controversial gossip periodicals, cheating, coming of age, a goat, a Wedding that would be as iconic as Luke and Laura’s (I may be dating myself with this reference), a pink and purple house, the coming of a new baby and so much more! This is in ONE season of LHOTP !

Sometimes I forget why I love this show so much and then I start flipping through episodes and am quickly reminded.  I am so fortunate to have Walnut GroveCast to discuss these shows but especially fortunate to have found people who are willing to support the show as well as take the time to come onto the show to discuss.

Kim Layer is my podcast partner on “Unsolved Mysteries Rewind” and we recorded As Long as We’re Together after having recorded several episodes about murder, death and other dark topics. It was a refreshing discussion that I think we both needed, sometimes it’s important to remember that LHOTP is always there to cheer you up or make you ugly-cry and ‘cleanse the palate’.

As Long as We’re Together originally aired on September 11, 1978. I mentioned on the episode that the audio of the clips are TERRIBLE for this episode – I may mess with the EQ but mostly I think we’re stuck with what’s there.

Anne Quinn joins me to tackle into the legendary WILDER AND WILDER!  There is so much in this episode to enjoy but Charles Bloom’s performance as Perley Day is just a pleasure to watch, I wish he did more acting!

We recorded this only 2 months ago but it feels like a year!  I hope each and every one of you are well and I hope you enjoy this episode!

Wilder and Wilder first aired on February 11, 1980

“Almanzo’s indolent brother, Perley, comes to town. Knowing that Almanzo’s interest in a much younger Laura has deepened, Charles is convinced that Perley is the better man for his “Half Pint.” However, those sentiments quickly change when Perley injures one of Almanzo’s horses. Two things become clear to Charles: Perley is a troublemaker, and Almanzo is a responsible young man (especially when he nurses the horse back to health).”

I was joined by Dotty Cashen and Courtney Pityer to review the episode, The Runaway Caboose! This was recorded at the same time all of the lockdowns began across the country so it was a real nice experience to escape into 1876 drama for a little while.  Thank you Courtney and Dotty for recording!

Kim Layer and I jumped in feet first into an episode where Judd Larrabee smacks little Andy around, there’s a huge fire on the Garvey farm, racism is addressed and we turn the schoolhouse into the first episode of The People’s Court!

I hope you enjoy this episode!

Barn Burner originally aired on February 19, 1979

“Jonathan loses his cool at Judd Larrabee for not keeping his word about not changing their prices when someone comes along to buy grain from them. Later Larrabee goes to Jonathan’s to get back but finds his son, Andy and attacks him. Andy goes to his father and they go back home and they find their barn on fire. They think Larrabee did it so they go and arrest him. He’s brought to trial. Larrabee claims what happened to Andy was an accident and that he didn’t burn the barn.”

Today I am joined by Paris Brown who is the host of a True Crime podcast entitled, Class A Felons, B-Films, C-Cups!  Paris is an unapologetic ‘Bonnethead’ and we had such a great time discussing the episode ‘Fagin’!  Paris brings her expertise in English and Literature to the table as she points out a possible deeper meaning associated to Albert’s name choice for his new calf.

Did Michael Landon choose this literary reference to provoke a deeper understanding into the Albert character?

Find out from this PhD candidate as we dig deeply into this wonderful episode!

Thank you Paris for taking the time to come onto the show!

Fagin was originally released on October 23, 1978

“Laura Ingalls becomes jealous of the extra attention her father pays to new family member, Albert, especially after the boy is given a new calf to raise for the county fair, and asked to call Charles “Pa”.”

Chris Hasler comes out of the woodwork to join me in discussing this remarkably funny collection of short films that follow Pamela, a single woman in NYC who is trying to find where her love of Little House on the Prairie fits into her journey of finding love. Clever, sweet and hilariously honest is the best way  for me to describe Pamela Bob’s work and Chris and I can’t wait to see what is next!

Episode 100 Become a Patron!

I started this podcast on a whim 4ish years ago when Chris Hasler and I got into a discussion about LHOTP on our podcast, VHS Rewind! – I recall making the statement, “I think Little House on the Prairie is one of the best tv shows to ever air” which triggered the idea of a podcast! It amazed me that there were people who shared my fondness of this strange and sometimes nearly forgotten tv show!

100 episodes later and I am so honored to have such a wonderful group of listeners!

100 Episodes are a lot of hours of discussing Harriet, Caroline, Nellie, Laura, Carrie, pickles, cast iron, Blanke’s coffee (it’s high quality I hear!) so I would like to thank all of the people who have participated in recording the episodes with me but especially the people who listen, share, comment and discuss!

For those of you who support the podcast, I thank you from a different level as you make it possible to subsidize bloated server fees and things like giveaways, stickers, etc!

We ALL thank you!

Walnut GroveCast has opened the door to introducing me to people who I now consider real friends, launching new and exciting podcasts as well as other projects and even meeting many of the cast members!

Thank you so much for listening and for supporting the show, the best is yet to come!

In this episode Amanda joins me to review, Little Women which originally aired on January 24, 1977!

“Mrs. Oleson rewrites Alcott’s “Little Women” to ensure Nellie is the star in Walnut Grove’s school play based on the classic story; but shy Ginny Clark steals the show when, taking a lesson from her character, Jo, to try to get her bitter mother to come to the event, she surprises everyone by playing her part to perfection, both on and off the stage.”

I hope you guys enjoy it!

Episode 105   Kim Layer joins me to deconstruct this unforgettable 2 parter! There is so much to love, laugh and cry about in this episode. Listen in as Mark admits that he is beginning to choose Mary as his new favorite character but in the same breath says she is being kind of a jerk while dealing with her blindness (listen closely to Kim’s gasp!).

I’ll Be Waving as You Drive Away Part 1 originally aired on Monday, March 6, 1978

“Long hours studying by candlelight for the state teacher’s exam results in tired, blurry eyes for Mary Ingalls, prompting a routine visit to the eye doctor; but when Charles is told that Mary’s worsening sight is just the beginning of a much more serious problem, the concerned father can’t bring himself to tell his beloved daughter that she will, most certainly, soon be completely blind. “

01 Sep 2020A Wiser Heart01:42:12

Episode 104

Today, I introduce to the show someone who many of you may have seen on the Facebook group, Kelly Mielke! I thought we had a really fun conversation about this episode which touches upon the dusty world of adult education in the 19th century and how smugness can be both attractive and gross.

A Wiser Heart originally aired on November 2, 1981

” Laura attends a writing seminar in Arizona, but things don’t go very smoothly, thanks to a less than honorable professor. The professor said to Laura that he should go out with her, if not, she will strike on the test. Laura will not be with the professor, so she strikes. Laura must work to have enough money to go to the school, so she starts as a dishwasher for a cold hearted restaurant owner. Michael Landon’s daughter, Leslie, is in this episode as Laura’s co-worker in the kitchen. Laura and Eliza Jane go on the school together and meet a student called Moart.”

Episode 106   Kim Layer joins me to deconstruct this unforgettable 2 parter! Kim talks about how she REALLY feels about Adam and we discuss the sadness of the reality that Adam never really existed. We bring up how amazing the Braille system of reading for the blind is and how it was invented by Louis Braille when he was only 15 years old! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braille

I’ll Be Waving as You Drive Away Part 2 originally aired on Monday, March 13, 1978

“Feeling lost and abandoned, Mary Ingalls battles anger and self-pity at a school for the blind, far away from the little house by Plum Creek. But soon, Mary finds a source of hope in her new teacher, Adam Kendall, and as the two young people work together they find they have much in common. Meanwhile, back in Walnut Grove, many are forced to consider the real possibility of having to start a new life elsewhere as the town’s economy erodes and work becomes scarce.”
