11 Apr 202201. Welcome to the Volunteer Nation Podcast!00:23:13

Welcome to Volunteer Nation!  I’m your host Tobi Johnson and after over 25 years working in nonprofits, public sector agencies, and grassroots campaigns there’s one thing I’ve learned – you can’t go it alone. If you truly want to bring about BIG change for the better, you need a strong, dedicated community in your corner. But it isn’t always easy, is it?

That’s why I created this podcast. Each week I share practical tips and advice to help your cause, charity, campaign, or company build, grow, and scale exceptional volunteer talent. If you’re ready to harness the power of people to fuel your good work, you’re in exactly the right place.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has had a significant impact on volunteer-involving organizations and on the rates of volunteerism around the world. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In this episode, I share how sometimes a bad thing can be a catalyst for a better way. I also share eight reasons volunteers are important, if not essential, in today's world.

25 Apr 202203. Moving from a Scarcity Mindset to Abundance00:25:23

In this week’s episode, we’re talking about the scarcity mindset, how it blocks your potential, and how it can affect your volunteer program.

At nonprofits, a scarcity mindset can pervade how budgets, resources, and staffing are approached. It blocks an organization’s ability to grow volunteer involvement and scale its impact. It can affect our self-care and can result in burnout and turnover.

Because it is so pervasive, it can also be very hard to pinpoint. It simply becomes part of an organization’s culture and way of being.  It feels “normal.”

In this episode, Tobi will help you identify facets of the scarcity mindset with a Scarcity Self-Assessment, including nine common ways limiting beliefs might be showing up in your volunteer program or organization.

She will also give you five practical ways to counteract scarcity mindsets by cultivating an attitude of abundance. Equipped with a fresh perspective and enabling beliefs, you will be better equipped to maximize the full potential of your volunteer team and get greater traction on your big goals. You will transform scarcity into abundance.

You might recognize some of your own thought patterns in this episode but be encouraged! Moving from a scarcity mindset to abundance is possible, and this episode will help inspire you along your journey.

05 May 202204. Why Volunteer Software Matters with Tony Goodrow00:43:17

In this episode, we’re ditching the spreadsheets and talking about how the right volunteer management software can actually expand your organization’s reach, add value, and maybe even attract new volunteers.

This week’s guest is Tony Goodrow of Better Impact. With years of experience and a wealth of knowledge, Tony shares nine good reasons to replace your manual scheduling and data tracking with dedicated software, and he addresses how to overcome some of the barriers holding you back from taking that leap. Tobi shares her experience as a local volunteer in her community, and the difference good volunteer management software makes from that perspective.

We’re addressing budget concerns, fear of change, and what software automation really means for volunteer managers. (Hint: it helps, not hurts!)

If volunteer management software seems a little scary, or you’ve wondered how to take that next step, this podcast is for you!

11 May 202205. 8 Ways Your Nonprofit Website Is Failing to Attract Volunteers00:28:41

Think of your nonprofit website like a party and imagine yourself as a newcomer.  Is the party you just entered so chaotic, confusing, and disorganized that you don’t know where to go or what to do?   Or is it so quiet and empty that the only thing you want to do is leave?

Or perhaps, is it a place where you feel welcomed, know exactly what to do, and were introduced to others?

This is how your nonprofit website should feel to prospective volunteers. Unfortunately, most nonprofit websites are not optimized to build relationships with visitors and convert them into potential volunteers.

In this episode, Tobi shares eight mistakes commonly made on nonprofit websites when it comes to attracting new volunteers, based on key assumptions about the audience and volunteers in general. She also offers tips on what to do instead to improve the experience of your website visitors.

The good news is, whether you are the website designer at your organization, or you have input into what's included, this podcast episode will help you design a better experience for the party that people want to attend, stay at, and connect.

19 May 202206. The 4-Part Power Thank You Letter for Volunteers00:17:16

This week we’re talking about how to show appreciation for your team with a 4-Part Power Thank You letter for volunteers.

When we talk about volunteer appreciation, so often we think of banquets, branded gifts, or fancy plaques. However, appreciation doesn’t have to cost a dime, and we shouldn’t wait until an annual banquet to celebrate our volunteers and their service to our programs. You can show gratitude for your team every day with a simple thank you letter for volunteers.

Many volunteers don't want nonprofits to spend limited resources on plaques, pins, or slick email campaigns. Volunteers don't really want stuff, but they do want to be acknowledged, and it’s important to cultivate a culture of appreciation.

There's an abundance of research that tells us this. Gratitude boosts optimism and resilience. Expressing and experiencing gratitude gives us greater tendencies towards positivity. Gratitude and respect in the workplace can help workers feel embedded in their organization, welcomed and valued. Research shows that gratitude creates more gratitude, and even inspires more giving.

Writing thank-you notes may seem daunting at first, but it’s easy once you get started. In this episode, I give you a simple but effective 4-part template to use when expressing your own powerful thank you to volunteers, as well as easy ways to implement an intentional culture of daily appreciation within your organization.

If you're a nonprofit leader, volunteer coordinator or a volunteer yourself, we hope this podcast will help you acknowledge the efforts of volunteers, both large and small. There is power in positive feedback. Show volunteers you believe in them in words and actions, and create a grateful, happier, and more productive workplace as well.

26 May 202207. The Power of Volunteers as Community Capital00:15:44

This week we’re talking about “community capital,” the incredible unique value that every volunteer brings to the organizations in which they choose to serve.

It’s easy to see volunteers as simply an extra pair of helping hands, but they are so much more! Each volunteer carries within them a lifetime of experience, education, personal and socioeconomic background, and relationships. These all combine to create a unique worldview and a powerful singular value called “community capital.”

In this episode, Tobi explores the true value of volunteers from all walks of life through the lens of this community capital and invites you to consider how the contributions of individual volunteers benefit the community as a whole.

02 Jun 202208. Where Should Volunteer Services Live at Your Nonprofit00:28:12

It is a common occurrence in sports: an athlete who seems to constantly struggle on one team gets traded and suddenly becomes a high-scoring star player. People are surprised by the perceived turnaround of the athlete but in reality, it is evidence of the importance in finding the right team to maximize your knowledge, skill, and talent.

That’s what this week’s episode is all about. More specifically, it will help you answer the question: what team should the volunteer manager or volunteer services department be on? In other words, where should volunteer services live on your org chart?

09 Jun 202209. Helping Nonprofit Employees See the Value of Volunteers00:18:33

Do your coworkers understand and celebrate the value of volunteers within your organization? If the recurring questions we receive here at VolunteerPro are any indication, the answer may be “not yet.”

We often see comments in the Volunteer Insiders (our free Facebook group) and in our VolunteerPro Premium Membership community that are tinged with a little bit of frustration.  Leaders of volunteers want to know how they can bring their co-workers along, the ones who don't understand the value of volunteers, treat them as second-tier help, or are downright resistant to having them in their departments.

Lack of support and buy-in from paid staff is actually one of the top five challenges cited by leaders of volunteers each year in our Volunteer Management Progress Report. It is a pervasive concern for many, and it’s not something we can wave a magic wand at and solve overnight.

The good news: changing the viewpoint of your coworkers and executive leadership to help them see the value of volunteers definitely won’t happen overnight, but it CAN happen with intentional relationship building and influence.

In this episode, Tobi shares five steps for building that relational influence so that, as a leader of volunteers, you can effectively advocate for your team, collaborate to place volunteer talent within your organization, and get the respect and support your volunteers deserve.

16 Jun 202210. Service Learning with Brian Halderman00:42:52

Service learning can be one of those hard-to-define concepts in volunteer management, and it definitely has its own set of challenges and benefits. In this episode, Tobi welcomes guest Brian Halderman for a deep dive into what service learning is and how it can benefit your organization.

Tobi and Brian discuss the history of service learning along with the changing face (and names) of this field of work. Some might call it community-engaged learning, while others call it critical service learning, student service, or something else entirely.

Whatever label you use, Brian gives you some common identifying features to help define the purpose of service learning and better understand the kind of value this type of service can provide to your organization.

Brian also examines the differences between successful and unsuccessful service-learning partnerships with specific research, tips, and examples from his own experience, and shares some effective ways to approach educational institutions to explore potential partnerships.

23 Jun 202211. Is Your Org Ready for More Inclusive Volunteering?00:28:21

While diversity, equity, and inclusion are familiar terms in weekly meetings and corporate goal setting, the reality is much more complex. It takes intention and effort to do them well, and it is incredibly easy to get them wrong.

Well-meaning initiatives for inclusive volunteering can backfire when organizations are not truly prepared to welcome differences, receive contributions from new voices, and allow input from diverse perspectives.

This week’s podcast is Tobi’s manifesto on the idea of inclusive volunteering, and she is taking an unflinching look at what “inclusion” can really look like in the workplace.

30 Jun 202212. Training Volunteers What I Wish I'd Known00:26:27

This week Tobi is getting real with some stories from her early days of volunteer training and some of the things she wishes she’d known back then. From the days of forgetting an extra lightbulb for the overhead projector to now, Tobi’s sharing her nine biggest early mistakes so you don’t have to make them, too.

From forgetting to focus volunteer training on...you know, the volunteers, to automatically assuming "training" is the solution to every problem, Tobi relates her Hall of Shame moments (with a cringe and some laughter) to help others along the way.

07 Jul 202213. Is Volunteer Word of Mouth All It's Cracked Up To Be?00:19:05

The pros of volunteer word-of-mouth are pretty obvious. It’s free, and your volunteers are doing the work of spreading the word and recruiting their friends to your cause.

But…have you considered how it might affect the diversity of your team?

People tend to spend time with others of similar interests and at the same stage in life. So volunteers naturally recruit more volunteers that are like themselves. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but it can result in a lack of diversity or worse, the idea that only a certain kind of person can volunteer at your nonprofit.

In this week’s podcast, Tobi takes a look at volunteer word-of-mouth recruiting, and how this powerful tool is working all the time on behalf of your organization (for good or not-so-good).

14 Jul 202214. New Volunteer Vision with Rob Jackson00:46:43

We are definitely at a crossroads in the volunteer management sector. The last two years have taught us that some of our established ways of thinking, recruiting, and serving as volunteers are no longer sustainable for the future growth and health of volunteerism.

Faced with this realization, and recognizing the opportunity such a transitional moment presented to change course, five organizations in the UK recently combined their efforts and knowledge to spearhead the creation of the Vision for Volunteering.

This report is an aspirational manifesto on what volunteering could be, and it shares a bold volunteer vision for the future if we all made the commitment to embrace change and take intentional action in the areas of awareness, appreciation, equity, power, inclusion, collaboration, and experimentation.

This week, Tobi welcomes guest Rob Jackson to discuss the Vision for Volunteering report and the long-term sustainability of volunteer programs.

21 Jul 202215. Recruiting Volunteers Online with Jennifer Bennett00:40:36

Take a moment to think about your current online volunteer postings. Do those postings share the inspiring mission of your organization? Do they include photos of happy volunteers in action, and share why the posted opportunity is needed and important?

Or do your posts simply list the shift, the day, and the duties, hoping that somebody out there just really wants to come work for free?

When you take the time to consider how you are messaging your volunteer opportunities, you can better see ways to more effectively recruit volunteers online by building a sense of vision and value.

In this week’s podcast, Tobi welcomes guest Jennifer Bennett from VolunteerMatch to discuss effective strategies for recruiting volunteers online, and what to do if your current online recruiting efforts are being met with the sound of chirping crickets.

11 Aug 202218. How to Use Slack to Strengthen Volunteer Teams00:32:55

As effective as email is for communication, it lacks the immediacy and relational feel that instant messaging can give. Email inboxes have a way of accumulating inbound messages, and important information can sometimes get lost in the digital clutter.

In this week’s episode, Tobi shares how her team at VolunteerPro has been implementing tools like Slack for a couple of years, why they are an improvement over email or text messages in some situations, and how to effectively use them to help remote volunteer teams stay in touch.

18 Aug 202219. Improve the Volunteer Experience with a Journey Map00:18:22

Originally used by businesses to improve customer service, journey mapping can also be applied to improving the volunteer experience of onboarding, training, and serving within your organization.

Journey mapping is a way of becoming a more purposeful architect of the volunteer experience. The process starts by identifying the key steps in your process and when you are most likely to lose volunteers.

In this week’s podcast, Tobi breaks down the steps to create the ideal journey map for your volunteers, and explains how this map can improve the overall volunteer experience for your team.

01 Sep 202221. Engage Volunteers with a Win-Back Campaign00:33:23

A lot has changed in the last two years, and there are likely a lot of reasons why volunteers have not yet returned to your organization. Questions of safety, fear about getting back out there after so much time has passed, doubts about skill and the continued ability to contribute…it can feel like a lot to unpack and attempt to resolve.

However, there are some simple actions you can take to engage volunteers who may have lapsed in service. In week’s podcast, Tobi examines the top reasons why volunteers may be hesitant to return to service and how volunteer leaders can help them overcome those doubts in a compassionate and confident way.

08 Sep 202222. My Fave 6 Nonprofit Leadership and Management Wins00:40:07

Do you celebrate your successes, large and small?  Most people don’t. We tend to minimize or negate our wins and quickly move on to the next thing.

It can be very easy to only focus on problems, challenges, and goals, but sharing wins with your team reminds both staff and volunteers of all the reasons your organization exists, and all the good your team is accomplishing together every day in big and small ways.

In this week's podcast, Tobi is leading by example and sharing her most cherished wins from her 30+ years in nonprofit leadership and management!

Tobi is well-known for her big energy and ability to produce high levels of quality content. However, like many nonprofit leaders, Tobi has struggled in the past with feelings of burnout and loss of energy.

She started paying attention and investigating what might help get over the hump, and in this week’s podcast, she’s going to be your crash test dummy! She’s sharing what she knows, and what you can do to build back the energy you may have lost over the past couple of years.

22 Sep 202224. The Best Volunteer Recognition is a Well-Run Program00:20:32

Tobi gets asked all the time about volunteer recognition and appreciation strategies and tips. And while she can (and has!) shared how to write an effective thank-you letter or create an engaging recognition strategy, real volunteer appreciation is about more than that. It’s about creating a well-run program that meets your volunteer’s core needs.

We need to thank our volunteers for their unique contributions and express our gratitude. But what really keeps volunteers coming back is a well-managed experience where volunteers feel purpose, find community, and get things done.

29 Sep 202225. Nonprofit Tech Transformation + Wellness with Beth Kanter00:49:41

Here at VolPro, we’ve been following Beth Kanter for a LONG time – since 2009 when Tobi started her consulting practice (only two years after smart phones first hit the market … and Beth had already been blogging for six years)!

Beth is an internationally recognized thought leader and trainer in nonprofit tech, digital transformation, and well-being in the workplace. She is the co-author of the award-winning Happy Healthy Nonprofit: Impact without Burnout and co-author with Allison Fine of the bestselling The Networked Nonprofit.

Beth’s first book introduced us to the idea that nonprofit tech was directly linked to the future of sustainability of our space and was the key to unlocking our connections with communities.

In this week’s podcast, we’re thrilled to welcome Beth to the Volunteer Nation to talk about her new book and share more about how nonprofit tech is driving change for today’s volunteer-driven organizations.

06 Oct 202226. Hiring? What to Include in Your Volunteer Coordinator Job Description00:32:31

What should be included in a volunteer coordinator job description? (And is that even the right title for the job you’re hiring for?)

Leaders of volunteers can go by many names…coordinator, manager, supervisor, or director, to name a few. In this week’s podcast, Tobi breaks down the job duties that each title should contain (in an ideal world) and details the most important skills and abilities hiring managers should include in their volunteer coordinator job description.

Finding the right person for the right role is key, and a well-written volunteer coordinator job description should include a wide variety of skills – leadership, interpersonal, organizational, tactical, analytical, and team building. Tobi goes over all these in detail to help you design the perfect description for your next hire.

But what exactly made that sense of community so strong? Tobi examines the core ingredients that all healthy communities share and applies those principles to volunteer programs.

20 Oct 202228. How Nonprofits Can Use Podcasts to Build Community with Anthony Wilson00:58:44

Have you ever considered starting a podcast to tell the world about your organization? Podcast creators can strategically use podcasts to build community around a common interest or goal, create awareness about their organizations, and even raise needed funds for their cause.

And, it may not be as hard as you think!

This week, Tobi sits down with Anthony Wilson, founder and host of the Groupfinity Podcast, to talk about ways to do just that.

27 Oct 202229. Evolutions in Corporate Social Responsibility with Chris Jarvis00:59:58

This week, Tobi sits down with Chris Jarvis from Realized Worth to talk about corporate social responsibility (and what that oft-used term really means), as well as how to nurture your volunteers through three stages of commitment, and how volunteers are literally changing the world by serving their communities.

First of all, what the heck is “corporate social responsibility” anyway? There are some often-heard, sometimes obscure terms used when describing a corporate “giving back to the community” focus. CSR, ESG, CR…all these acronyms identify a version of the same idea: companies encouraging employees to serve as volunteers in their local communities, and those same companies donating financial resources in a variety of possible ways.

That all sounds great…and corporate social responsibility really IS a fantastic way to connect nonprofits who need support to the people and the corporations who can offer it.  However, not all nonprofit organizations have truly tapped the power and potential of corporate social responsibility in the traditional sense, let alone kept up with how it’s evolving. Tobi and Chris discuss the potential reasons why those CSR service hours (and those financial donations) are so often left on the table.

03 Nov 202230. From Disruption to Impact with Beth Steinhorn and Jerome Tennille01:00:22

This week, Tobi welcomes authors Beth Steinhorn and Jerome Tennille to discuss how organizations have responded to the volunteer disruption they’ve experienced over the past few years, and what lessons can be learned.

The pandemic brought some vulnerabilities to light in our sector and sparked some innovation in spite of the challenges nonprofits faced due to lockdowns.  Ageism, fear of transmitting the virus, shutdowns, loss of in-person volunteering AND an increased need for many services...these are just a few of the volunteer disruptions we all faced over the last few years.

This upheaval, and the changes it brought about, inspired the latest book from Beth, Jerome, and their team: Transforming Disruption to Impact: Rethinking Volunteer Engagement in a Rapidly Changing World.

Tobi chats with her guests about this book, based on the assumption that the way we approach volunteer engagement is in need of an overhaul, and the COVID pandemic simply brought this into high relief for volunteer-involving organizations.

This week Tobi welcomes Lori Gotlieb to the show to talk about the volunteer engagement cycle, and some of the innovations going on throughout the sector right now.

Tobi and Lori discuss each of the steps in the traditional volunteer engagement cycle: role design, risk management, recruitment, screening, orientation and training, supervision and support, and recognition.

Lori shares the ways these roles have shifted and what areas leaders of volunteers will need to focus on to stay relevant AND offer their volunteer team the absolute best service experience.

This week, Tobi sits down with author and fundraising expert Julia Campbell to talk about ways for nonprofits to get involved in Giving Tuesday, and how to include volunteers.

Nonprofits usually focus their Giving Tuesday strategies around a fundraising push. Tobi and Julia look at ways to craft those Giving Tuesday pitches effectively, and ways they can quickly go wrong.

As with any fundraising effort, how you express it, when you express it, and to whom you express it all matter. Julia gives her tips on how to construct a fundraising strategy around the momentum that Giving Tuesday provides, and warns you on some of the pitfalls to look out for.

24 Nov 202233. New Research on Volunteer Funding with Dana Litwin00:41:50

This week, Tobi sits down with strategic volunteer engagement expert and consultant Dana Litwin to talk about a brand new research project in the volunteer sector, and how the data uncovered in that research can help connect organizations and potential funders more effectively.

Tobi and Dana discuss some of the common barriers to volunteer funding, including the disconnect between what grant writers are asking for and what potential funders are willing to offer.

Dana offers suggestions on how to specifically and confidently express what you need for your program and how nonprofit executive leadership can more effectively make the “ask” to properly fund their volunteer staff needs.

01 Dec 202234. Your Nonprofit Strategic Plan for Volunteers00:20:40

Here’s a question: when you take a quick scan of the past year, how would you describe it in a word or two?

What did your 2022 feel like?  What did you achieve? What did you wish you would have achieved?  If you’re a mission-driven person who sets high goals for yourself, you might have used the words – disappointing, an uphill battle, confusing, chaotic, and exhausting.

Now, imagine your best outcomes for 2023 – what words would you use at the end of the year? What would you achieve? How would volunteers be involved? How would you feel about it?

This is where strategy comes into play, and in this episode Tobi shares what YOU need to build an effective nonprofit strategic plan.

08 Dec 202235. 6 Ways to Prevent Burnout in Nonprofits00:28:48

The last 2+ years have been undeniably challenging, and many nonprofit leaders have struggled to keep a sense of passion for their work. Even when you love what you do like Tobi, you’re not immune to the symptoms of burnout and fatigue.

First of all, what is burnout? Tobi shares a definition from the World Health Organization, and examines the three main indicators to watch out for.

Tobi also shares a great resource from  Christina Maslach, one of the world’s pre-imminent researchers on burnout in the workplace. Maslach has identified five levels of people’s work experience, and this helps us understand the phenomenon with more subtlety.

Tobi shares six practical and doable steps to prevent burnout before it sets in and increase your effectiveness at work.

Most importantly, Tobi reminds you to build these burnout-busting techniques into your annual strategic plan, so you (and your team) remember to practice them on a regular basis.

15 Dec 202236. 5 Nonprofit KPIs Your Volunteer Program Should be Tracking00:28:14

Your volunteer program’s KPIs are like your vital signs. Think about it – when you go to your doctor, what does the nurse do first? Check your vitals – weight, blood pressure, pulse oxygen, urinalysis, blood work.

These numbers help to quickly assess your level of wellness, and they give your medical team direction to locate problems and determine whether a treatment plan is working.

The same goes for nonprofit programs, including your volunteer engagement strategy. Knowing your nonprofit KPIs for volunteers can help you identify early issues and assess whether certain interventions are making a difference.

26 Jan 202342. Why Your Volunteer Recruitment Isn't Working (and What to Do Instead)00:29:16

We often think that, just because our marketing isn’t delivering the results we want, people in the community aren’t interested in our cause or volunteering in general. It’s an easy assumption to make, but the truth is that if you make even a few small changes in your approach, you can realize some big results.

In this week’s episode, Tobi looks at five big reasons why your volunteer recruitment isn’t working, and shares some fresh ideas on what to do instead.

23 Feb 202346. Save Time with Better Volunteer Management Systems00:30:58

Soccer is all about moving the ball down the field as efficiently as possible and making a goal before your opponent has a chance to catch up. And if you’ve watched one particular Premier League team this year (looking at you, Chelsea!), you’ve seen them lose many opportunities to score because they hesitate and take one too many steps before taking a shot on goal (and if you’re nearby, you may have heard Tobi yelling at the television!).

Volunteers can often, unintentionally, get stuck by those same feelings of hesitation. They know they need to move toward the goal, but they’re not entirely sure of the steps to get there. So, they dribble the ball, stalling, waiting for clearer instruction on their next move from the coach or their teammates.

This is where clear volunteer management systems come into play. These procedures are the playbook by which volunteers can know, and quickly act on, the next right step to accomplish the goals that your organization has established.

09 Mar 202348. New Statistics on Volunteering & Civic Life with Dr Mary Hyde00:49:42

In this week’s episode, we welcome guest Dr. Mary Hyde from AmeriCorps to share some fascinating results from the most recent Volunteer Engagement and Civic Life census supplement.

These results shine a light on both the enduring spirit of volunteerism in America – even during the height of the pandemic – and what the data can tell us about future trends in formal and informal volunteering.

The latest Volunteering and Civic Engagement in America survey was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic, and while the results showed an expected drop in formal volunteering (giving time freely to help others through an organization), there was actually no drop in informal volunteering (giving time freely to help others outside of an organizational context) nationwide.

These results contradict the pervasive sense that “people just don’t want to volunteer anymore.” Rather, it highlights the ongoing desire of individuals to serve their neighbors and communities in personally meaningful ways, without necessarily feeling the need to do so within the structure of a formal organization.

30 Mar 202351. 10 Reasons Why Volunteerism is Important (Way Beyond the Fluff!)00:23:50

April, which is worldwide volunteer month, is set to start. I wanted to take some time to reflect on the significance of volunteering.

And I want to go way beyond the fluff. We all talk about, we're all getting together, we're working in community, we're helping our nonprofits meet their mission. These are all important things, but there is so much more power and volunteerism out there that I believe we don't often recognize, especially those of us who work in the field on a daily basis.

We usually don't give it much thought because we don't have the time. So, in this episode, I'd like to discuss ten reasons why volunteering is important.

20 Apr 202354. National Volunteer Week 2023 - A Year to Be Grateful00:27:34

Today's episode, we're going to talk about National Volunteer Week 2023. Our theme is a year to be grateful. A year to be grateful, and Tobi shares some of the things she's grateful for.

Gratitude is a mindful practice that encourages us to take an abundant view of the world. In the nonprofit sector, it is quite easy to adopt a scarcity mindset and believe that there isn't enough to go around. But when we start to really think about it, there's plenty to go around. There are lots of people out there that wish to support the success of your mission. You just have to establish a connection with them.
