Since 1994 Dan Bue is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, specializing in marriage and family therapy, but also working with many individual needs. Besides maintaining a private practice, he has worked for 6 years as an elementary school counsellor, for 1.25 years as a prison chaplain in a maximum security prison, and has spent almost 20 years working with high needs teen-age foster children. Dan is also an ordained pastor and served in pastoral ministry for 5 years.

In part one we discovered the first 3 causes of burnout from Suzy McAlpine’s book BEYOND BURNOUT. https://www.linkedin.com/in/suzimcalpine/https://suzimcalpine.com/beyond-burnout/ In summary, number 1 is OVERWORK, taking on way to much responsibility & not saying no to overloaded work. Number 2 is LACK of Control , when you don’t control your environment you become a snowball heading down the mountain building up momentum creating an uncontrollable huge snowball. Isolation is the #3 cause of BURNOUT. Isolating & receiving no feedback to your life will bring you to VERY low energy levels.
Cause number 4 of Burnout. Insufficient reward. When the effort you put into your job, volunteer work, or passion project doesn’t match the inner or outer reward. Number 5 cause is the ABSENCE of FAIRNESS. We all know that life is not fair.Examples of absence of fairness are: Inequity in workload or pay, Cheating in the workplace,Inappropriate handling of promotions or evaluations, & Poor dispute resolution practices
The sixth cause of BURNOUT is when your personal values and goals do not in line up with those of the organization. The 3 red flags of BURNOUT are: Chronic Exhaustion Reduced Personal ACCOMPLISHMENT Cynicism or Depersonalization
Firstly, Chronic Exhaustion looking at Burnout is a chronic, debilitating and relentless exhaustion that’s prolonged.
Then Reduced Personal ACCOMPLISHMENT a growing overwhelming sense of no achievement at all at work. In a future episode I will have Suzy here at VOICE POWER to do a deeper dive into what she experienced. Let’s look at CYNICISM OR DEPERSONALISATION Here are a few characteristics: disillusionment, being with drawn, absence of positive emotions. In the first 9 episodes of season 2 we have enjoyed 7 interviews of various backgrounds & experiences. Today we will go over some of the basics of the voice over industry for success.
It is an absolute imperative to have a professionally produced demo. Demos define my professionalism & dedication to voice production excellence for casting and producers.
Auditions are expected to be produced as MP3 files. it is the industry standard. It is important to always look at the details of the audition as perchance a producer desires it in Wav file. Wav files are much larger. I don’t want to get to technical it is simple enough to say always assume for auditioning that producers require MP3. If they want Wav they will ask for it.
Most auditions are recorded from home studios today. Establishing a quiet, reliable space to record and handle a few basic edits is a necessity. There are often challenges in maintaining that quiet, reliable space. Every audition submitted builds my reputation as a professional voice. Regardless of whether I am hired or not. Usually it takes 200 auditions to book a job. So tenacity & patience are essential for success.
When auditioning with a script that’s brief (:10-:20 seconds or less in length, always offer a Three-in-a-Row (aka a 3-Wild or an a-b-c) on the same MP3, unless otherwise instructed. Make sure each read has it’s own unique expression & variety, rather than offering a ‘broken record’ delivery that sounds robotic and repetitive & always the same. Did you notice the difference? Today here are helpful tips for public speaking presentations. These ideas come from a seminar previously presented a few years ago by Public Speaking Coach Danielle Benzon.
It is vital to look your audience squarely in the eye, eye contact is key to connecting with them & helps you relax. Of course you must have your content not memorized but internalized. Better to know the concept & be able to express it in several ways. For instance ...There are many ways to say this & it is easier to remember when you are not stuck on specific wording but focused on the ideas & concepts. With repetively practising the speech the ideas land & your ability to recall grows & grows.
When your body is relaxed then you can reach a point where you know something vital. That is you know the why you are saying what you say. Knowing ... Before you start your speech it is helpful to take a moment to breathe & get yourself centred. It will give your audience anticipation ...
Choosing a topic or idea that you have lots of heart for is key. Then your message will really resonate & grow with your key points. If you choose something that is not your passion the audience will sense it & you will loose your connection with them.
This is all about being authentic because you are prepared, passionate, & poised. Pauses at the right time will add emphasis when you determine they are needed. Maybe the pause will come as you are recalling the idea you want to convey. But your audience doesn’t know that & you don’t want to indicate that you are trying to remember what to say.
Remember the audience hears 7% of your words, 38% of your voice, & 55% of your body language. Then you want to be very expressive & keep in mind to own the stage when you speak. People typically have more than 6,000 thoughts per day. We all have energy & are responsible to keep it glowing into the positive. Over working without breaks ...When a situation occurs responding ASAP is necessary...
What triggers your negative thoughts? I know that when someone does not show up when they agreed to & gives no advanced warning will be a de-energizing experience. When someone does show up I am very grateful & will express my gratitude. At times it is very challenging to stop the negative & convert it to positive.
In creating effective voice-overs I need to be in a positive space. When constant fraud calls come in & I decided to find out who they are & make a complaint it was de-enregizing. I was not able to do an outstanding voicing. Now i know the steps to block those calls & their frequency is greatly reduced. Being positively focused makes a difference in that all my voice skill will be empowered & focused for creative expression.
Choosing to be with positive, powerfully encouraging people creates great amazing energy. Recently with a long time friend I enjoyed a Starbucks get together. It felt like we’d been chatting for a little over 1/2 an hour. In fact it was 2 hours, our conversation flowed & we both were relaxed & it felt like time stood still.
List 5 people that we feel totally comfortable with. Think of creative ways to send them positive uplifting messages. When a negative situation jumps at you it is important to have a strategy to convert it to a positive. 1.Close your eyes & take 3 deep breaths hold & release your breath ( unless you are driving , only take a deep breath & release. 2. Imagine what the other person is feeling & empathize with what they are going through. 3. Try to express in a positive manner the negative experience. 4. Recall a similar experience when you responded in a positive way. 5. At the end of the day write in your journal 3 experiences or people that you are grateful for.
Here is a challenge that i have experienced The Gratitude Challenge. For 21 days choose 3 people or experiences that you are grateful for.
You may ask what does this have to do with voice-overs? It has everything to do with voicing. When i step up to express & do a project or audition I must be fully present in a positive way focusing on giving my best & not allowing any negative space to come into my body & voice.

He owned an Aircraft Maintenance business for over 15 years maintaining flying school aircraft, and business aircraft in and around the lower mainland airports, Boundary Bay , Langley, Vancouver International, Pitt Meadows and Chilliwack Airports.
The aircraft maintenance business folded when he was in a terrible crash created by a drunk driver. During his recovery he retrained and became an aircraft maintenance instructor at BCIT, Sea Island Aerospace Campus. Ross' journey to voice-over began in the 3rd grade. His first introduction into the recording arena started by recording books on tape for his fellow students. Immediately, his interest was peaked, and he started devoting more and more time to recording on an old reel-to-reel machine.
Throughout his school days, Ross performed the morning and afternoon announcements over the school's PA system. Additionally, he worked as the DJ at the local roller rink. His first big opportunity came when CJIB – the local station – allowed him to cover high school basketball games on their radio station. This led to his very own one-hour show during the middle of the night. From then on, Ross never looked back and is steadfast on his broadcasting journey as a voice-over artist.
In his senior year of high school at Vernon Senior Secondary he enthusiastically received training at the Columbia School of Broadcasting. For 5 years from 1995 to 2000 Ross was the Account Manager & Voice Actor at 95.3 FM in Vancouver. For 5 years from 2007 to 2012 Ross was the Co-Founder, CEO, Producer & Voice ACTOR at GO2 Productions in Vancouver.

His mother a single mom on welfare with alcoholic addiction. Richard Young has battled back to an incredible life. His recovery is truly amazing.
Richard began his substance abuse at 12......
His father was absent & an active criminal... He came to believe that it was his destiny to be a criminal. Their family was poor, he decided to start shoplifting... Richard knew if your treated like a criminal you will become a criminal. He was very good at it, his street name was slippery people called slip for short.
Richard heard a lot of good about Vancouver & made his way out west to BC. At 65 he obtained a decent apartment...
His sister lived in his building & attended church and would ask him do you want to come to church with me. He refused & would say i don’t believe in fairy tales.
Richard is currently living a new life & serving others with The Chinatown Stewards program establishing a safer and more inclusive community in and around Vancouver Chinatown. Providing a variety of services : helping tourists navigate the Chinatown district and acting as liaisons between shopkeepers and those experiencing homelessness, using drugs or loitering.

My sleep is usually very good evidenced by detailed interesting...Going back quite a few years I volunteered for a sleep project. On cable TV viewing a promotion The sleep project at Shaugnessey Hospital in Vancouver BC.
There was lots of sleep education, including: sleep patterns, inner sleep clock, stress affecting sleep, relaxation tape, & my questions & progress. Once my initial interview was completed my task was to complete a survey on my sleep quality. It was important to not take any short cat naps during the day. Instead if i got sleepy during the day i would go out for a good brisk walk.
Going to bed & getting up at the same times was vital to setting the inner sleep clock. When i haven’t fallen asleep very quickly I was directed to get up & do something relaxing. Like read a book or watch TV. I always know when i have a lousy night that the next will be a good sleep.
Dr Fleming carefully analyzed my surveys on sleep. Then he booked my overnight stay at Shaugnessey hospital for a nocturnal polysomnogram. The results were I did not have any major sleep problems. The end result was that stress will always throw off the sleep. Handling stress is key.

In 2002, he started a non profit organization called Clothes2U with the purpose of giving clothes to Langley residents, free of charge. This remarkable idea grew out of a single parents support group Ernie formed a few years earlier. One in 10 BC residents are below the poverty line & this makes a significant difference to thousands. He started by giving adult clothes & has grown to clothes for babies to adults, toys, linens, diapers/incontinence products, books, personal and smaller household items.
They’ve grown from Langley to also serving Surrey, Newton, Guilford, White Rock, Abbotsford, Aldergrove, & Chilliwack with two events per year per community. Many thousands are encouraged in their lives by these events. They are held in halls and church gyms with the space provided free. I will be discussing my voice experience with accents. I would go to YouTube and research .... Get the accent firmly in my mind.... I have many saved in my bookmarks from Arabic to Southern.
The easiest is The Indian Accent. They are wonderful people kind & friendly. All over South ASIA there are different Accents, not just Indian there is Pakistani, Sri Lankan & I am glad to be born in India.
The Texas accent is the most difficult because ... David Stern is a dialect coach who has taught Hollywood... The long “i” becomes “ah”: In a Southern accent, the long “i” sound (pronounced “eye”) sounds more like “ahh.” For example, “tired” becomes “tah-d” and “bike” becomes “bah-k.” Ah becomes so tah-d because Ah was riding my bah-k from Houston to Austin.It’s such a long long way ah want to go to bed.
I voiced a Boston Accent & it landed a voice-over for The Church by the Glades in Florida. I used my New England/Boston accent for Voicing a segment of Frederick Douglass - The hypocrisy of American Slavery, 1852. “ How should i look today in the presence of Americans ...There is not a man beneath the canopy of heaven who does not know that slavery is WRONG. The Chicago accent is a more relaxed accent. A’s are very important & some of the t"s become d’s. The higher your voice is the more you get a Chicago sound especially with women. A deeper voice guy the accent doesn’t stand out as much. For example : Dat guy & I are going down to 1060 West Addison to watch a Cubs game.

Describe what makes good sound for a voice-over audition.... My set up is key: where my Mac book pro is placed...Then with ease the script is voiced with close proximity to my MXL770 Mic. When recording my speakers are turned off to avoid.... Placed over the Mic is the windsock to insure there are no problems with creating plosive sounds such as popping p’s ....
Previous place i was gifted with a vocal booth. In order to achieve the best vocal recording, it is necessary to have as much control over the area surrounding the microphone.... .Better still, if you can prevent any noise from outside from entering into the recording, you will be in great shape to record that perfect vocal. This is where the vocal booth comes in. By googling how to create a vocal booth you will find Designing a Vocal Booth - Primacoustic.
Next to my building a demolition ... When it was demolished next they were building the foundation of the new building. When I shared my recording dilemma in a networking group ...Tony Tsao, Director & Service Manager for Purplo Consulting solved the problem by sharing the app. It is just over 2 years ago that he shared the link for the KRISP App. I tested it for the inside noise & was delighted that the test was perfect there was no inside noise on my audio on the mp3. Now I was needing to make sure it worked for the outside noise. Strangely enough when i was wanting to test it. It was quiet many times. Finally the building of the foundation created lots of noise. I was ready to test it & the test was perfect. What a relief!!!
Since then they have further developed the app & after every usage they give a report. Call Summary provides ...

Greater detail of the importance of sound in how my recording set up is arranged & all the steps. When there are technical concerns or challenges it does throw off the focus for voicing ,now is the set up that is ready for auditioning, recording a voice-over project, or podcast episode.
My recording system is on my Mac, it is GARAGE Band. Open Garage Band looking for my podcast template. Already has my intro. Firstly in the GB settings i will click on AUDI/MIDI & make sure output device is on External Headphones & input device is on krisp mic.
The black apple ... very top of my Mac far left hand corner. Click on system settings to see the sound output is on External Headphones ...
Sound is controlled by the Behringer audio interface &converts microphone signals into a format my mac and recording system software recognizes. The interface also routes audio from my mac out to my speakers and recording system. Check the recording settings 0 dB means that you are right at the threshold of human hearing. A positive dB means that the sound is a few times louder than the threshold, while a negative dB means that you are a few times softer than that threshold.
Hearing threshold is the sound level below...
Bottom half of GB to the far left in the recording settings. Below recording settings you will see record level. Check the volume... At the top of that lower 1/2 u will see buttons of Track, Master, & Compare. Track & Compare will show as Blue Buttons now click on Master & it will show as a blue button & to the far right you will see blue buttons of EFFECTS, OUTPUT , & EQ, make sure all those switches are off so there is no echo. When u click on EQ be sure that the line is flat with no variations.
Up to the top left hand corner & click on the scissors, the wave form of sound & being able edit. We can do a sound test to make sure the wave form is large enough & shows in green at the top left where you set the volume button for reasonable volume at minus 0.1DB.

My recent travel experience to the USA for the Blue Jays & M's...We started planning in January... Kelly has good experience going .. M’s game in Seattle.
The most difficult part of prep was getting ready to be at Pacific Station in downtown Vancouver ... at 5:35 AM & because of my good friend Ben giving a lift I made it with time to spare.
Customs at Pacific Station was smooth...The Amtrak...positive experience. ... We arrived in plenty of time for the game at 1 PM at T-mobile park...
Gausman was pitching an excellent game ...6 innings with 9 strikeouts & no walks. But in the 3rd... & Vlady JR is my fav Jay. I was hoping he would hit a HR ...Jays were up 7-4 in the 7th & in the bottom of the 7th the jay’s bull pen let them down... Pearson hit a batter on his first pitch. ... it was 9-7 for the M’s after 7. The Jays ...Kirk had a great day with 4 singles & got one on the 9th. The drama was building in the 9th...FINAL score m’s9- Jays 8. It was close all the way...
The toughest part of the trip was after the game...Kelly booked a yellow cab...Then we saw the cab coming our way & we both had our arms up hailing it. We saw the # on the cab & yes...The train was delayed 15 minutes. When i looked at my watch i thought it stopped 7:08 pm We left Seattle at 7:16 PM... Vancouver at 11:30 PM. They make an announcement & open the doors.. .What a relief to get on skytrain yet another longer wait because of the fireworks.
Kelly was aware of my difficulty walking & very helpful & caring suggesting to have a stop as there were seats. Kelly was amazing as he knows his way around Seattle though frustrated & it was so hot must been 90 degrees Fahrenheit. There were large crowds for the Taylor Swift concert that we made our way through & mostly beautiful young women dressed to party with Taylor Swift.
The good experience was possible because of great preparation, Ben’s lift as no public transport was available so early in the AM & Kelly’s awesome direction & experience .

Welcome to VOICE POWER Season 3 EP17. This week you will hear a blast from the past. An on air radio interview during my days at Giant FM in Penticton BC. Along with 2 radio commercials I voiced & produced at The Giant. I began there as the over night announcer back in late August 2000.
One day i was informed by the station manager that Robin Pinto Penticton’s female boxer, her Manager Peter Holt would be calling. Robin would be on the boxing card in Laughlin Nevada & I would interview Peter Holt live on-air that day. Later the interview would air via the news department’s Dennis Walker from my interview & production.
My love of interviewing began when I was at BCIT. In the 2nd year of the BCIT program BROADCAST Communications with The Radio Option. The students took over the radio station CFML & worked all positions. One was Making Contact a 1 hr interview show with 2 - 30 minute segments.
This interview with Peter Holt was enjoyable & my first professional interview. My love for interviewing grew with BCIT & The GIANT FM INTERVIEW.

WHY, WHEN, & HOW. The vocal warm up helps to loosen the cords & effectively gets ready for.... project. Going through my range & waking up the different parts of my voice. Warming up also minimizes my mistakes.
When? In the morning. I have found these warm ups helpful: panting exercise, high & then low with my voice, standing in front of the mirror stretching my tongue to the left then the right. Then loosening my body up by jumping up and down with lots of energy & finishing with The P exercise, peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers 10 times & getting faster each time. Annunciating clearly on each P.
7 warm up exercises to include in your routine. I will often refer to resonance. It is defined as: the quality in a sound of being deep, full, and reverberating."the resonance of his voice" 1.Lip Rolls/Lip Trills For the Lip roll keep your mouth closed & make a B sound while keeping a constant flow of air. It will cause your lips to quickly vibrate creating the roll or trill sound.Begin by doing the exercise on a single straight pitch in your speaking range & when comfortable move through your vocal range starting from very high down to very low & your voice will warm up. 2Tongue Trills Similar to the LIP Rolls but the vibration is caused in your tongue instead of your lips. Being with your mouth in a neutral position, slightly open & make a D or G Keep a constant breath flow & feel the tongue tip vibrating against the roof of your mouth. 3“M” Sound is a good way to activate resonance in the front of the mouth & face. Make an M sound with your mouth closed & use constant breath flow. To keep the sound full & consistent without drastic changes in volume & intensity. Hold the sound for a few seconds on a single pitch. 4“N” Sound Keep upper mouth closed & in neutral position, make a “N” sound & . You likely will feel your tongue touching the roof of your mouth. 5“L” Sound activates some resonance a little further back in your head & throat ...you will feel vibration in the head & throat. Allow your tongue to gently press against the back of your top teeth & slightly open your mouth. 6“Z” Sound ...activating resonance in the front of the mouth & face. Using a more open sound than the previous exercises. Close your teeth but do not clench them & slightly open your mouth 7“NG” Sound is a great way to activate your nasal resonance. You will feel vibration in your nose & sinus areas. Focus on the NG sound & you can use a variety of different vowel sounds in front of the NG. Vocal warm ups are an excellent way to activate the various voice registers, resonances, & tones, of your voice & create flexibility & comfort. Will warm up different areas of your vocal sound creating greater overall flexibility & producing better voice performance.
Discovering that building a successful business is all about building positive relationships. Recently experienced... Always everything works for the best & I am reminded of my wonderful friend who left me with his last words when he passed on. Joseph said on my last visit “Earl everything will all work out & be ok.” When life gets super challenging I recall his wonderful friendship & the great gift he left in his parting words.
What is more important is my family & friends. One friend this October we will celebrate 46 years ... I am very blessed to have good connections with family & so many friends & some long time & some new.

Normalizing Our GRIEF RESPONSE with SUZANNE JABOUR

I love finding interesting people to give you quality interviews from a variety of experiences. Today will be our first grief educator interview. Last October I attended Small Business BC’s networking event at The Anvil Centre in New Westminster BC. I was very happy to meet Suzanne Ja-bour.
Suzanne’s son passed away in September of 2020. Through her grieving she has found meaning in her loss by providing grief education. Sharing how grief really works and how we can support people experiencing it. She works with organizations and businesses to build the skills and protocols to better support people who are grieving at work. Then i asked what does your dog say & we had a good laugh. Interviewing is fun & includes a lot of spontaneity. That is why in the pre interview I never tell the guest what the exact questions are. What I do is go over the areas of questions, ... to cover everything in the pre-interview so that they are totally comfortable & relaxed in the interview. It is simply a conversation.

In addition, she edits indie projects in the genres of animation, horror, drama, and more. Currently, Nina is lead editor on Fox’s hit animated TV show, Grimsburg starring Jon Hamm.

Public speaking started early which created confidence, resulting in numerous successful voice related employment opportunities. My early experience at CHUB Radio in The MALASPINA Hotel, in Nanaimo BC left a clear impression on the value of communication & my love for radio. The importance of communication and many early life voicing opportunities along with positive voice comments, led to The Radio Program of BCIT in Burnaby BC.
My first professional voice position at Giant FM, Penticton, BC. I developed my craft through Cathy Weseluck's Animation and Commercial Voice-Over Workshop in 2004. When I was in customer service at Teligence they knew I was breaking into the voice over industry. I enjoyed 3 voicing opportunities there because I was in the right place at the right time. One of the other associated brands Megamates was going through a change.
Recalling my first audition while I was working at Teligence my voice consultation coach knew the production agency & the person who conducted the auditions. Cathy Weseluck informed, you don’t see the script until you enter the audition booth & then ask for a moment to view it & ask any questions.
The next one i recall was for a commercial that would play on the Canuck’s radio broadcast. It was for the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The script included the world figure skating champion & 1972 Olympic silver medallist from North Vancouver Karen Magnussen. The reason this is so significant is one night when listening to the Canucks game on the radio the same ad auditioned for played & also on another night. I thought oh my goodness how close was I.!
Another way of creating a voice project is one success leads to another success. Early in my career I voiced the San-Gold Flyaround 3 D Mine Tour for The ON DEMAND PRODUCTION NETWORK in Vancouver BC on Aug.18,2010 & it was heard by another producer. This led to Terry McWhirter of Vividus Design contacting & contracting for his US GOLD El Gallo virtual Video. https://youtu.be/W7gnDnQIwIM Close to my 95th project a narration for a documentary for an Interior town in BC. The reason this opportunity took shape is my radio commercial for Toastmasters District 96. My new client’s client heard the radio spot on QMFM. He told the producer of this documentary that he wanted my voice for his documentary.
The reason I landed the Toastmaster radio spot was my flexibility to write the script. The commercial played on QMFM 103.5 from December 24, 2018 till the end of February 2019. When I returned from Penticton in 2003 it was always a dream of mine to be heard on a Vancouver radio Station.
Yes dreams do come true when you strategize & plan carefully. Keep going for your dreams & goals my friend you never know how far you can go & don’t stop when there are roadblocks. You never know how close you are to achieving your ultimate desire, dream, & higher destiny.
No matter what your field is keep going for the gold. Don’t give up though you hit a wall. Beyond that wall success waits for you.

Whether you are a business owner or not I will make this applicable for you. When you have a passion project or any personal project you are responsible for that you need to write a script for you will be able to convert the scripting principles to your personal needs.
It is exciting when a client sends their script for their voice project. It is vital to confirm that it is the finalized script as making changes to a script is more costly & time consuming. I would rather wait & be 100% certain that the script is finalized. Always be clear on costs when a client changes the script after it’s been finalized. Here is my Revision Policy from when I was subscribed to Voices.com 2 free revisions for mispronunciations, for pacing/tone & general feedback. For script changes $40 per sentence to a maximum of $85.
Each word is important & pronunciations are vital. I never take anything for granted if there is a chance that the pronunciation is uncertain. I will proof it by going into Youtube or Google for the correct pronunciations. I will use a syllable method of pronouncing the word. Take for example Similkameen Region I will put right in the script Sim-il-ki-mean, Similkameen Region.

Today he is my very SPECIAL Guest on episode 14. David is a counsellor and stand up comedian who experiences depression. David is a recipient of The Champion of Mental Health Award. These national awards recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of Mental Health in Canada. David also received a Life Unlimited Award from the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance. The award honors individuals who exemplify a life unlimited by depression or bipolar disorder actively working to help others do the same. He also received The Welcome Back Award from The National Council for Behavioural Health for his work using comedy to de-stigmatize mental illness.
David’s heart to help others who go through mental health issues is demonstrated by his teaching stand up comedy to people with mental health issues as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma. He is the President at Stand Up For Mental Health in Vancouver, British Columbia. David Directs Stand Up For Mental Health programs in partnership with mental health organizations in over 50 cities in Canada, the USA, and Australia. David is featured in the VOICE Award winning documentary Cracking Up. SMH is also featured in the award-winning Australian documentary Crack Up. David also was presented The Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada, and was recognized as one of the 150 Canadian Difference Makers in mental health.

Since I was young I have found it fascinating to observe an interesting interview. Seeing how it starts, develops & gains momentum. Then when I attended BCIT in the BROADCAST Communications Program in Radio I enjoyed doing on air interviews. In the 2nd year of the program students take over the radio station, back in 2000 it was CFML, experiencing all the positions. One show was Contact, the 1 hr interview program on Fridays from 11 am to Noon.
Back in the early 2000s I experienced live several on air interviews at 100.7 GIANT FM in Penticton BC. Peter Holt the boxing manager for female boxer Robin Pinto. Robin was scheduled for a fight in Laughlin Nevada in the evening & I talked to Peter during the day of the fight. Another live interview on The Giant was for The Make A Wish Foundation with Greg Schneider who was raising funds with a bike ride across Canada & eventually crossing the border to New York City. Jordan told us of the great tours up at Cathedral Lakes with details on the breakfast & dinner menus. Curtis was live at Manatu Park in Naramata promoting the festival & giving details on the parade. Laurie Meyers The Support & Education Co-ordinator for The Alzheimer’s Society South Okanagon, on the inaugural Walk for Memories fund raiser at Cherry Lane Mall in Penticton on January 26, 2003. Listening back to these short on air live interviews brings back great memories of radio & how much fun interviewing is.

To focus our direction goals help us get going in the best direction for success. It is important to have living achievable goals, then you will know the progress you are making. It may feel like you are going in a circle round & round if you don’t have your personal & business goals written down & in a place you can see them every day.
Each year near the end of the year I begin drafting my potential new goals. I monitor monthly the current ones & determine any changes, adjustments, or new goals near the end of each year. Every month I track how I am progressing & apply my reward system to my goals.
Writing specific goals that are attainable which I call SMART goals is an important process. Let’s get into defining a smart goal with the acronym for SMART. S stands for specific (simple, sensible, & significant). There is lots of info you can find on line for smart goals & up your knowledge of writing goals. By googling smart goals you will find valuable & useful info. When you write your goal don’t be general. Let’s try this for a smart goal. By writing goals I will bring in more money to my business this month. That is not specific enough.
M is for measurable. By writing this month I will do lots of follow-ups for my business & podcast. Do you think that is measurable? How many are lots of follow-ups? It is not measurable my goal is 80 follow-ups per month.
A is for achievable. When you make the goal way to big it is not sensible or achievable. By writing I will bring in $ 500,000 each month for my voice-over business. It is not achievable, yet.
R is for relevant. When i write that I will walk on the moon in 10 years. It is not relevant. It does not relate to my life or my business. If i was a multi BILLIONAIRE & i really wanted to walk on the moon then it could be relevant. I am not saying you can’t want to walk on the moon if you really want to. Being relevant is key how does the the goal relate to your life & business.
T is for time based. Writing that I will spend 15 hours per month on my JUST PROS Toastmasters club is time based.

Robin Williams documentary on ABC inspired this episode on creativity. What a sad loss he is a great talent & is greatly missed. Why do some people have creativity in spades while others stay in their comfort zone? What does it take to get someone inspired to develop their skills & talents? On this episode we will look into that & how I have over the years stepped outside of my comfort zone & developed my creativity.
The definition of creativity is having or showing an ability to make new things or think of new ideas, involving the process by which new ideas, stories, etc., are created. Maya Angelou once said “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have. How are you using your creativity today? What is a comfort zone? The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines the comfort zone: the temperature range within which one is comfortable. The level at which one functions with ease and familiarity. When I was working in a group home for the physically & mentally challenged in South Surrey BC I thought I don’t want to reach retirement without knowing whether or not I could make it in radio. Here is how i stepped outside of my comfort zone ......
I am not saying to come out of your comfort zone that you need to leave your job & go in a different direction. What I am saying is to become aware of what is your passion in life. Then develop a plan that fits you & take small steps before the big ones come. Back when I was at BCIT I developed a passion & joy for interviewing. Then i thought it would be so cool to have my own interview show. Amazingly I have done 6 interviews here at VOICE POWER & there are more coming. It is true what Maya Angelou said that creativity grows as you use & develop it.
What is something that gives you a lot of joy & passion for life? Why not take some small steps & see how you can develop it. There are lots of resources in the community....The 1st question to ask yourself is what is your interest & passion that makes life amazing? Finding your higher destiny is a great adventure.

We graduated together from BCIT IN 2000 & her first position was working full time at Corus Entertainment as a traffic reporter for CKNW/Rock101/AM 730. Her colleagues for many years were Frosty Forst, Philip Till and Jon McComb. My special guest will share what she learned from these radio personalities in her 5 year experience at Corus.
Amy Bell joined the morning and noon news on Global TV as the traffic/weather presenter in 2005. Amy's first child was born in 2006 & she returned to Global as a writer and editor for Global news in 2006.
Her second child was born in 2010. In 2011, Amy joined CBC Radio’s Early Edition as the traffic & weather presenter. I am sure you have heard her cheery voice early in the morning, as you receive direction for your commute as well as getting a clear picture of the weather for the day. While being with the CBC for the past 10 years she is The Early Edition’s Parenting Columnist. You will hear her interviews bi-weekly as well as read her written articles on CBC’s website for the parenting column. For CBC TV occasionally Amy fills in for weather presentations. Todays’ episode is all about the reality of being a voice-over artist. My first paid experience in the world of voicing occurred in Penticton BC at 100.7 GIANT FM back in August of 2000.
When I experienced a day course on VOICE-OVER & Animation I had the option to experience one on one voice consultations with the instructor Cathy Weseluck.
During voice consultations Cathy informed that teaching former radio announcers voice-over is very challenging & difficult. They are so very use to sounding like RONY RADIO. People do not talk that way in real life. When doing voice overs many times the audition description is sound like a normal person not a radio announcer.
I am trusting that you are hearing me as a normal person as normal as possible. Since it is only a few days after Remembrance day... I trust you are hearing the difference in my tone versus what i would sound like on the radio when I would say “YOU ARE LISTENING... One of the biggest requirements in being a voice-over artist is having loads of patience. Once a project is submitted for review the waiting can be verrrrrry long.
My hope is that eventually as I stated in a previous episode that I will do an episode on VOICE-OVER Good news. I was very grateful for AMY BELL coming on episode 20 & sharing her success journey in radio & TV. I will very soon have a successful Vancouver radio station producer & assistant program director. Art Factora is a graduate of the BCIT BROADCAST COMMUNICATIONS in Radio. He was the producer of the afternoon Joe & Jenn Show on CFUN for over 8 years from 2001-2009. Where he expertly trainer & successfully, coached and mentored over 20 new producers and operators at CFUN. He loves the producer work & at CFUN trained several new hires in talk radio procedures, the majority are working in BC in the radio industry. When CFUN changed format from talk radio he quickly bounced back & successfully took on the position of Senior Producer at CISL 650 and Z95.3 from 2010-2017. Only when you know the importance of your project & what you want to accomplish will money not become an obstacle. Recently I wrote a pricing affirmation after careful thought. It is “I am well worth my recording fee. I am excellent, creative, & talented at voice-over. I deserve more money!
There are 2 types of budgets that I am aware of fixed & open. The fixed budget is set in what the client is willing to pay. In the open budget the potential client will forward their finalized script for my personalized quote & I will include with a FREE brief segment of the script.
What do they want to accomplish for their company with the project. What value will their company receive with my deep voice quality & attention to all the details that are clearly expressed. What will they achieve when they go with a less expensive voice-over artist & what will it cost them in lost revenue? Fiver has undercut the voice-over industry when it comes to rates & businesses think they are getting a great lower cheap rate. You get what you pay for! Going for quality voice production will produce quality business results.
It is all about the client receiving full value for their campaign & moving their business forward. There is so much more to pricing than receiving the money. The satisfaction of creating more success, money & clients for my wonderful valued clients.
I know it is vitally important when discussing with them how important their campaign is. To allow them to voice what they want & they sell themselves on the value they will receive by contracting my voice services. Answering their questions without being super selling is key. Asking the right questions at the right time. Like what do you want this campaign to do for your business? How passionate are you about your clients in helping them achieve better results? Business is very competitive & giving my clients a distinctive edge brings my personal satisfaction to a higher level.

It is vital in our lives to stay focused on our purpose & take care to have work life balance. All work & no play will create physical, emotional, & relationship problems. Being able to turn off our work or life passion when work time is over is a vital key.
Let’s look briefly at 3 CASUES of burnout from Suzi McAlpine’s book BEYOND BURNOUT. 1. Overwork: Are you taking on too much responsibility? You know what you are capable of & what your strengths are. It is important to learn to say no at the appropriate time. 2.Lack of Control: When you have no choice & you can’t control your environment you will head towards burnout. It doesn’t happen right away. But like a small snowball heading down a ski slope building momentum to become a huge snowball. You must be aware of what is going on in your life. 3.Isolation: When you isolate & have no human contact & no feedback your energy level will go down. I am an extrovert & feed off the energy & inspiration of others. I have no context for how an introvert operates. Apparently they are ok with reduced human contact.

He has appeared on TV & on corporate videos & voiced radio commercials. Currently he is the Afternoon drive announcer & Music & Program Director at Country 107.1 FM in Abbotsford BC. Surprisingly he experienced a pro wrestling match. I am looking forward to hearing about his experience in the ring. He was a sports mascot earlier in his life. We are going to have a lot to talk about because there is more in his impressive resume as a radio personality. For 10 years in a row Curtis Pope was the BC COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION On Air Personality Of The Year. Also off stage announcer at the BCCMA Awards show.
Curtis has raced stock cars, played bull poke, acted in music videos, & co hosts the Cummins Real Estate Group radio show/podcast. Early in his radio career he worked with the Legendary Red Robinson on the morning SHOW at CISL AM 650.Then spent 7 years in Prince George BC as the midday announcer & music director at CJCI and CIRX. Curtis’ current community involvement is very strong & admirable: For 10 years he was a director of The BC COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION, for 11 months a director of the Abbotsford AgriFair & since JULY 2010 THE Abbotsford Agrifair Announcer.
