16 Jan 2023 | Ep 5 - From Humble Beginnings to World Class Engineer: How to Love the Journey with Mike Fraser, pt. 1 | 00:41:51
Today, I’m joined by world class mix engineer, Mike Fraser. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Mike since I was literally in utero, so there’s a long, long history to draw upon. Mike tells us his unique story of growing up in the industry, from starting out as a janitor at Little Mountain Sound, to living in the loading bay and assisting Bob Rock on sessions at night, right up through to his own career mixing ACDC, Aerosmith, Metallica, and others, and recording in castles, playing daily golf with the bands, and living/working in exotic locations like Ibiza. We talk about the important relationships in Mike's career, the art form of learning to “hear” in the scope of music, and the importance of the skill of songwriting. Mike gives us insight into the specifics of the roles of producer, engineer, and artist, how each can come best prepared and work together to get the best creative end product, and how to utilize different studios for different purposes. We also talk about vocal management when working live, and the realities of vocal fatigue as part of the job. You won’t want to miss this episode! It’s part one of my interview with Mike, and we’ll be back on Thursday with part two. _________________________

19 Jan 2023 | Ep 6 - From Humble Beginnings to World Class Engineer: How to Love the Journey with Mike Fraser, pt. 2 | 00:38:09
On the show today, we have part two of my interview with Mike Fraser, legendary rock and roll mix engineer. Mike and I talk about the importance of leaving the egos at the door, elements of his favourite projects, as well as difficult projects he’s worked on. Mike lays out the way he structures his rates, and emphasizes the importance of clarity around how much you’re spending and exactly what you get for that money, so there are no unpleasant surprises later. He also works through the pre-production process, the studio process, the post-production process, mixing and mastering. We talk about the importance of creating a comfortable setting in the studio, in order to create the best possible product. Mike talks about the realities of working at the legendary Little Mountain Sound Studios, and some of his favourite local and international studios he’s had the pleasure of working in throughout his career. Mike shares his favourite pieces of gear to work with (hint, new isn’t always better in rock and roll!), and talks about the importance of having some business knowledge and acumen as an artist, so that you can take care of yourself and not get taken advantage of. I’m so grateful to Mike for sharing his invaluable knowledge of the industry. _________________________

23 Jan 2023 | Ep 7 - The Vocal Journey of a Career Creative, with Saffron Henderson (pt. 1) | 00:54:45
Today, I’m thrilled to welcome one of my dearest friends, Saffron Henderson. Saffron and I have worked together in a lot of different capacities for a lot of years, starting with singing on a SunRype jingle as kids, and recently having a party band together for a number of years called The Ticket. Saf has had a varied career, depending on her creativity, and largely relying on her voice as her main creative tool. In addition to voice work - both singing and speaking - she has worked as a dancer, an actress, and a songwriter. I’m so excited for you to come along on the journey with Saf and I as we talk about navigating the trials and tribulations of a publishing deal as a songwriter, coming into her own right as an artist while being the daughter of a successful musician (Bill Henderson, episodes 3 and 4), some great war stories from both the singing and acting worlds, and the early imprinting of misogyny and being a woman in the music industry. In addition, Saf really breaks down the nuts and bolts of being a hired lead singer, background (BG) singer, singer/songwriter, and working in a cover band. We talk about the value of collaboration, and the important relationships Saf has valued in her career, We’ll be back on Thursday with the second half of Saffron’s interview. In the meantime, I want you to know about her live Streamily Signing event with her Anime Time Machine crew, coming up January 29 at 11 am PST on Instagram. 26 Jan 2023 | Ep 8 - The Vocal Journey of a Career Creative, with Saffron Henderson (pt. 2) | 00:51:15
Today we have part two of my episode with Saffron Henderson, professional voice talent. (And I do mean talent!) Saffron has spent a lifetime in the arts, and works as both a singer and voice over actress. Saf and I talk about how to create community and celebrate with friends while also potentially being in competition with them for the same work, and the delicate balance of holding both things simultaneously. Saf explains the differences between all the various kinds of voice over work she does: narration, advertising, animation, anime, descriptive video, audiobooks, video games, and more. Each comes with their own joys and challenges. We finish off by talking about the advantages and disadvantages of auditioning or recording from home and in studio, and some of Saffron’s insights surprised me. (Hint: convenience isn’t everything it’s chalked up to be!) For training in the realm of voiceover acting, check out On the Mic Training, where Saffron is one of many working actors, teaching the skills you need. 30 Jan 2023 | Ep 9 - Joy, Instinct, and Eliminating the Unnecessary Notes with Serial Collaborator, Craig Northey, pt 1 | 00:50:55
Today on the show, we have Craig Northey, founding member of renowned Canadian rock band "Odds". Formed in1987 they crossed over into radio success, platinum awards and Juno nominations during the mid 1990s and have maintained their vitality to this day. Craig is also known for his work as a film and TV composer (Kids in the Hall, Corner Gas, Hiccups, Young Drunk Punk, This Blows). Craig and I talk about his music roots as a child whose mother was a symphonic violinist/violist, and moving from a classical pedigree into rock and roll, and the role his musical education has played in his musical journey…how theory helps eliminate the unnecessary notes. We get into the important relationships in Craig’s musical life, and how learning music was a social concept that involved hanging out at the music stores on the weekend to learn from your peers. Craig has a great perspective on community over competition in music. We talk about Craigs journey from live performer into music for Film and TV, and collaborating with Kids in the Hall, and writing music for Brent Butt. The process is much more streamlined now than it was when he was starting out! Craig talks about his songwriting process, both his solo writing, and when in collaborative process. We talk about the concept of storytelling as a songwriter, and I love that one of Craig’s most driving forces in lyric writing is “how can we make this funnier?” We talk about the different ways we listen to music, and Craig talks about Susan Rogers’ (record producer turned brain who worked with Odds) book This Is What It Sounds Like. 02 Feb 2023 | Ep 10 - Joy, Instinct, and Eliminating the Unnecessary Notes with Serial Collaborator, Craig Northey, pt 2 | 00:34:31
Today we have the second part of my interview with Craig Northey. Craig was so generous with his thoughts and knowledge gleaned from many years as a joyfully pro musician. We talk about the realities of life on the road, and the importance of taking care of yourself and your instrument, in order to achieve what you’re setting out to achieve. Craig gives us the inside look at the extensive plan the band undertook in the early days of the Odds, which involved their alter-ego band Dawn Patrol working as a house band at the Roxy, opening for themselves, spending years writing and recording in the basement of the Roxy, before ultimately commuting back and forth to LA. Craig talks about the process of a band breaking up and then ultimately re-forming, working with other artists, and jokes that didn’t land. We go down the rabbit hole about people’s most common misconceptions about the music industry, and being a successful writer or artist. And we come full circle, talking further about relationships, lessons, the importance of great teachers, and the importance of lateral skill development. New Odds album coming soon! On today’s show, we have Danny Craig, a drummer, songwriter and Producer/Mixer based outside of Vancouver, Canada. Danny is also a founding member of the multi platinum rock group Default. As a writer, Danny plays an integral role in the co-creation of the ongoing Default catalogue. Additionally he co-writes with many of the artists he produces, and has seen success on rock radio with bands like One Bad Son and Bonds of Mara. In 2017 Danny scored big with writing the opening theme song for Nickelodeon’s The Mysticons, and more recently has been writing for commercials and video games. Danny and I talked about the things that have made the biggest positive differences in the development of his career, the important relationships along the way, and how he made the transition from performing to producing. Danny generously offered up his wisdom about the intersection of the roles of artist, producer, and engineer. He then offered up his best tips on how artists can prepare to work with a producer in order to have the most successful project. This is part one of our interview. 09 Feb 2023 | Ep 12 - From Overnight Band Success to Rock and Roll Producer, with Danny Craig, pt 2 | 00:41:25
In part two of my interview with Danny Craig, we get into the elements that have gone into his favourite projects. Danny explains how he structures his rates, and exactly what can be expected in the process. We talk in detail about the different stages, roles, and what they encompass: pre-production, recording, mixing, and mastering. We talk about why it’s worth recording different things in different rooms, and how it affects the budget. Danny talks about what the current day alternatives are to radio trackers, in order to get music out of the artists’ hands and into the ears of listeners. We chat about how to get heard by a label. And Danny wraps it up with his words of wisdom on when it’s time to get an agent or a manager…and when it really isn’t. _________________________ Email the Vocal Lab at thevocallab@sararamsay.com Theme music for The Vocal Lab by FreshEars Audio Some links posted in the show notes may happen to be affiliate or partner links. Using that as an example, we talk about the need to write, write, and write some more on the way to making great records. Jeff and I also talk in depth about the concept of the music BUSINESS - the concept that musicians need to have some business acumen as well, and how greatly it can impact your career. 13 Mar 2023 | Music School Didn't Teach Me This! The Business of Franchising Music, with Rob Hamilton pt 1 | 00:40:44
Meet Rob Hamilton, guitarist, bandleader, and entrepreneur. Rob and I have known each other for nearly 30 years, and we had such a great conversation that it couldn’t be contained into 2 episodes. So we have an extra special 4 episode arc with Rob! Rob’s journey has taken him from full scholarship at Berklee College of Music, to Capilano College Jazz Studies, to touring with Lee Aaron, Soul Decision, and Vince Vaccaro, and becoming band leader for Vancouver funk institution Soulstream. Rob’s original writing has been featured on television shows such as “The L-Word” and "The Dead Zone", and he has appeared on countless stages as a side man with Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepson, Michael Buble, and Tom Jones among others. In 2010 Rob launched event band Side One, which would forever change the course of his career from hired gun guitarist, to multi-million dollar a year entrepreneur, as Side One expanded from Vancouver to Calgary, Toronto, and Seattle. In this episode, we talk a lot about the unexpected pathway that music has taken Rob on, starting with giving up a full scholarship at Berklee to return to Vancouver and attend the relatively new Jazz Studies program at Capilano College, and working our way through his career. Rob talks about the immeasurable magic of a music community, and the generosity of a teacher willing to give up a great student to a better-suited teacher. We also talk about the effect that formal music education has had on Rob’s career, and how that translates into working as a band leader with musicians of varying levels of formal education in Side One. It was such a pleasure to sit and talk music and career with Rob, and there are a ton of useful nuggets you can take away. Be sure to come back for all 4 episodes of this mini-series with Rob! _________________________ SUBMIT YOUR BURNING QUESTIONS or SUGGEST A GUEST Theme music for The Vocal Lab by FreshEars Audio Audio Editing for The Vocal Lab by Kurt Maas Some links posted in the show notes may happen to be affiliate or partner links. 20 Mar 2023 | Ep 23 - Music School Didn't Teach Me This! The Business of Franchising Music, with Rob Hamilton pt 3 | 00:37:40
On today’s episode of the show, I welcome back Rob Hamilton guitarist, co-founder of Side One, and as his email signature will tell you: CEO of Rocking, for this 3rd episode in our 4-episode mini series. We talk about the process of franchising Side One into other cities, a concept that is not often seen in the world of cover bands. Not only do we talk about the process of establishing the band in new cities, we also talk about the concept of ongoing management from a distance. Rob actually wrote a database app to create a hub for his musicians, his admin team, and his clients! We go on to talk about some very real issues with working on the road - from the logistics, to the realities of oxygen management when working at different altitudes. 23 Mar 2023 | Ep 24 - Music School Didn't Teach Me This! The Business of Franchising Music, with Rob Hamilton pt 4 | 00:51:34
If you are a working musician, this is an invaluable episode that you don’t want to miss! In my final episode with Rob Hamilton, he gives us the CliffNotes version of his Handbook for Musicians, coming from the perspective of a bandleader and employer. It’s basically a guidebook for how to be the Most Employable Musician. Rob created it to answer the question he was often asked, “How to do work my way up the Side One call list?” But it’s SO applicable for all working musicians! I’m really grateful to Rob for 4 episodes of truly engaging conversation about the business of music, and his incredible generosity with his knowledge. If you haven’t caught our other episodes, be sure to check out episodes 21-24! 27 Mar 2023 | Ep 25 - Nice Guys Finish First: with Rock Singer/Drummer Marc LaFrance, pt. 1 | 00:48:24
On today's show, we welcome drummer, singer, producer, and songwriter, Marc LaFrance. Marc has been a fixture in the Vancouver for over 4 decades. He has been the Drummer/Singer for Bachman & Turner and Randy Bachman since 2009, and is the Drummer/Singer with Cease & Desist. Notably, he has recorded with a vast array of prominent artists including Crowcuss, Chilliwack, Payolas, Loverboy, Trooper, Prism, Shari Ulrich, Bruce Miller, Straight Lines, Glass Tiger, Long John Baldry, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cher, Carly Simon, Blue Murder, The Cult, David Lee Roth, Scorpions, Black Veil Brides, "Michael Bublé's Christmas in New York," and many others. Marc and I talk about the what-I'd-do-differently and the what-I'd-do-agains, his music education, important career relationships, and creating longevity in the music industry. We talk about the perspective that this is indeed the music 'business', and there are some cross-sectional skills that are important. Marc talks about caring for his voice over the course of his career, and the physical requirements of being a singing drummer. We talk about his drum setup and posture to facilitate singing while playing, and about being at home out front and behind the kit. Marc talks about the opportunities he had to work with Scholastic, and create music for video games and animation, and we get into the different organizations Marc has served with (on the Board), to lobby for artist rights, and the success of the music industry. Marc does a great job of explaining Neighbouring Rights, which is now administered by ACTRA RACS, and how significantly the concept has affected his career. Make sure you catch both parts of this interview: episodes 25 (Monday) and 26 (Thursday)! 10 Apr 2023 | Ep 28 - So You Want To Write Music for Film and TV? with Jim McGrath | 00:48:00
This week on The Vocal Lab, I sit down with Jim Mcrath (pronounced McGraw). a Toronto-based composer best known for his television work, including the hit series: Degrassi: The Next Generation, Killjoys, CBC’s Republic of Doyle and Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town. Interestingly, Jim’s theme for Degrassi was featured in Drake’s video “I’m Upset” which saw over 95 million views. Jim has also written arrangements for such recording artists as Tom Cochrane (with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra), Ian Thornley and Big Wreck (with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra); the Tower of Power Horns, Manteca, The Northern Pikes, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah Slean, and most recently for Steven Page in concert with the Vancouver Symphony. We talk about the interesting career path of intentionally going into writing for film and TV, by way of advertising to start. Since Jim has also done a lot of arranging for some major artists, we talk through some of the specifics around that part of the work as well. This is an excellent interview to listen to for anyone looking at different career paths within the industry! As usual, you will hear half the interview Monday, and the other half on Thursday! 21 Mar 2024 | Ep 62 - Emily Jaworski Koriath on The Power of Doing What Matters to You | 00:52:21
Greetings, Vocal Lab enthusiasts! In this episode, we continue our fascinating conversation with Dr. Emily Koriath. We're diving deeper into the physical and emotional mechanics of singing and performance, exploring how to navigate the pressures and joys of being on stage.
We kick off with a critical look at the nervous system's role in performance anxiety and the importance of creating a nurturing space for performers. Emily and I examine the essential skill of practicing—not just what we practice, but how we engage with practice to develop both technical proficiency and emotional connection to our work. We also talk about embodying the song, making each performance a choreographed expression of both mind and body.
Our discussion shifts to the nuanced dynamics of practice versus performance, debunking the myth that success comes from talent alone rather than consistent, focused effort. Emily offers her unique perspective on starting vocal training not always with breath support, especially considering how trauma can affect one’s core strength and accessibility to traditional techniques.
In sharing insights from her book and teaching practices, Emily also gives us a sneak peek into her upcoming courses designed for singers, teachers, and practitioners eager to deepen their understanding of the voice’s potential.
Key Takeaways:
* Recognize the nervous system's influence on performance to better manage anxiety. * Learning to practice effectively is as important as what you practice. * Prepare your performances to inhabit the song fully and connect with your audience. * Separate the skills of practicing and performing; each requires its distinct approach. * Reconsider starting vocal training with breath support, acknowledging the complex interplay of physical and emotional factors. * Achieving balance in breathing and singing comes from understanding and working with the whole body.
Join us for this enriching exploration into the heart of vocal performance and personal development, where every note and breath brings us closer to our truest selves.

Welcome back to The Vocal Lab Podcast, where we dive deep into the art and science of singing, teaching, and living a life filled with music. In this episode, we're exploring the rich intersection of music, education, and personal growth with my esteemed colleague, Dr. Emily Koriath.
Emily brings a wealth of experience and insight as the editor and primary author of "Trauma And the Voice: A Guide for Singers, Teachers, and Other Practitioners." With a focus on trauma-informed pedagogy, Emily combines her expertise in Somatic Experiencing, yoga, and the Alexander Technique to guide artists toward singing with their full, radiant selves.
Today, we're peeling back the layers of Emily's journey in music and academia, particularly her path through the challenges of opera and the quest for authentic expression. We delve into the necessity of integrating personal musical tastes in both teaching and performance, aiming to nurture authenticity and individuality in the music industry. Emily and I challenge the status quo in music education, advocating for a learning environment that honors autonomy, self-expression, and the empowerment of all students, especially those from first-generation college backgrounds.
Join us as we discuss the transformative power of somatic practices, like yoga and the Alexander Technique, in enhancing musicians' wellness and performance. Emily shares her belief in the philosophy of "doing without doing extra" and the liberating concept of "enough," guiding us toward a more authentic and effortless expression in music and life.
Key Takeaways:
* Celebrate your unique voice and path in the music industry. * Push against outdated norms in music education; pursue what truly resonates with you. * Foster an environment of respect and support that champions social justice and equality. * Embrace holistic learning methods to improve your wellbeing and performance. * Discover the freedom in simplicity and sufficiency in your artistic expression.
