In this episode: Listen to a conversation between your host Vivienne Aerts and legendary mastering engineer Maria Triana as they talk about the craft of mastering and her experience of mastering the album 'Typuhthâng' About Maria Maria Triana started out as a classically trained violist in her native Colombia. Until 2019 she worked at Sony Music Entertainment in New York – out of their Battery Studios facility – as a Mastering Engineer. There, she had the honour and opportunity to contribute her skills and expertise on many award winning recordings, from legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wayne Shorter and Bob Dylan as well as current releases by Donald Fagen, Sting and Britney Spears While at Sony, she contributed towards the testing of Sony’s new immersive 360RA technology and creating content by mixing and remixing released and unreleased material. Furthermore she developed an extensive knowledge of legacy formats such as analogue tape and metal discs. Being equally versatile in both the analog and digital domains, Maria has worked as a restoration and archival engineer for music collections of the Metropolitan Opera of NY, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Legacy. Now based in the Netherlands, Maria is available for mastering and re-mastering projects, both independent and major label. She has performed with accomplished artists such as Brazilian composer Toninho Horta, four-time Grammy-winning bassist Oscar Stagnaro, Mexican composer Armando Manzanero, and jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, as well as singing at the Newport Folk Festival, performing at Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid with the Spanish producer Javier Limón, and working with Sony Latin U.S., among others. A multi-award-winning vocalist, composer, producer of live music events, educator, and music activist, Fayos graduated with honors from Berklee College of Music in 2018 and from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute graduate program in 2021, where she studied with renowned jazz musicians such as Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Tia Fuller, and Kris Davis, among others. She began her studies in music at a very young age, earning her Associate Diploma, ATCL Recital Piano from the Trinity College of London when she was just eleven. She then proceeded to earn her Licentiate Diploma, LTCL Recital Piano and Associate Diploma, ATCL Recital Violin a couple of years later. Hayley is also a holder of the Yamaha Teacher’s Grade specializing in Piano since the age of twelve. With a profound interest in contemporary and jazz music, she was awarded a scholarship to further her studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. With her exceptional musical abilities, she completed her Bachelor of Music with a Five-year Dual Major Degree Program in Performance and Jazz Composition in just one and a half years. With her musicianship compared to as "Stravinsky meets Brookmeyer", she was selected as the Finalist at the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra (SWOJO) Annual Jazz Composition Contest for Women Composer in 2016. Hayley Lam is also a 2017 Global Music Awards (GMA) winner in the Composer and Jazz Big Band category. GMA is a top-tier international music competition that honors talented musicians around the world. In 2017, her solo piano work "Distant Structures" is selected to be the winner of the "Contemporary Piano 2017" international composition competition held at Athens. She is also selected as the composer showcase winner of the International Jazz Conference JEN at New Orleans. Her works were also commissioned for the London Women of the World equator festival in 2017. As an awkward teen multi-instrumentalist, she spent many evenings and weekends in her parents' basement recording songs on cassette with her Fostex 4-track. She has since caught up with technology and prefers her Mac & Pro Tools combo. She records in her humble yet highly efficient home studio in Brooklyn, NY with many analog signal chains to choose from in addition to a large variety of virtual and real instruments. After constantly hearing that "women don't do music production" and "women aren't interested in studio work" and "I'd hire a women but can't find any," Jess snapped one day and decided to prove those statements to be entirely false. She bought some basic video gear, taught herself how to use Adobe Premiere, and booked flights all over the country to interview some of the most talented women in music production. In 2006 she got her Bachelor degree in music and specialized in vocal studies.In 2012 she was awarded a scholarship from México’s Young Creators FONCA program in composition, after four years of original writing. In the same year she debuted as the vocalist for the band Pop Hessarg, with whom she recorded two albums and performed in Barcelona and Paris. “Dragon”, her first recording as a solo artist and produced by Iraida Noriega and arranged for a jazz quartet, was released in 2014. Three years from then, Paulina was ready to reveal her second official recording, titled “Invierno” (Winter) In this album we find “Canción de Trigo” with Kenny Werner as a special guest. Currently she's working on her third album "La Despedida" (The farewell) an EP that includes 4 original songs and 1 Cuban bolero.
