“The Appalachian Trail is thought of as a trail for thru hikers but it's just not true. Three to four million people will hike on the Appalachian Trail this year. A couple thousand of those will be thru hikers. They're less than one half of one percent. Thru hiking 2,198 miles is an amazing accomplishment and so they kind of suck up all the media attention. The real story of the trail is not the story of the thru hikers, it’s the story of the person who does a five-mile loop hike on a Saturday.” – Mills Kelly, Historian and Host of The Green Tunnel Podcast Website I Instagram I Facebook

“The best way to describe how I got into this journey is that in the past, I've hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, and I've done bike tours from Mexico to Canada, and those journeys always gave me faith and they renewed my spirit, and they breathed new life into me. Those challenges always put me in a very positive and happy place.” - Kevin Conley, Wildland Firefighter and Author of Above the Ashes Website I Instagram I Facebook I Newsletter Sign Up

06 Feb 2024 | 53. Virginia’s Adventure Towns: Farmville with Mayor Brian Vincent | 01:03:36
“There's a real excitement about Farmville, a steady progression, where we sit on this cusp of what we all think is an opportunistic moment for Farmville to shine. It's a great place to live, work, and recreate. That is our new tag for the town and I think it fits us well.” – Mayor Brian Vincent
Welcome to Farmville in the heart of central Virginia. Our guest, Mayor Brian Vincent, takes us on a journey through Farmville, where college town vibe meets small town charm.
From our dynamic conversation, one can't help but feel the town's heartbeat through its myriad of outdoor adventures and main street allure.
Together, we’ll roam through Farmville’s extensive outdoor rec offerings, including the “Farmville Five,” a list of must-visit state parks near town, uncovering the hidden treasures that make each park a true gem.
And speaking of gems, weaving through the core of Farmville is High Bridge Trail State Park, a 31-mile-long rails-to-trails park with the crown jewel being the majestic High Bridge, Virginia's longest recreational bridge. Soaring 125 feet above the Appomattox River, High Bridge Trail is a haven for hikers, cyclists, and history buffs alike.

20 Feb 2024 | 54. Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases: Protecting Yourself in the Outdoors with Dr. Holly Gaff, Old Dominion University | 01:00:24
“As part of the change in economy, we reforested the eastern part of the United States. We have a lot of forests now that are about 100 years old. As the trees came back, the deer came back, as the deer came back, the ticks came with them. And then the pathogens, of course, come along for the ride as well. I think about it from an ecology perspective, that what we did not bring back was also those top predators. So we end up with this ecology of weedy species, like deer, that do replication really well, and raccoons and rodents and all these things that also make excellent tick food.” – Dr. Holly Gaff, Old Dominion University Tick Research Team Website I Instagram I Facebook I Newsletter Sign Up

"Everybody has a favorite place in Virginia like a trail, a sunset, a beach, a lake, or a river. Everyone has a place that's special to them and everyone is invested in trying to make sure that it's there for their kids and their grandkids. And that's such a unifier. When you're on the trail with people, you're not talking about politics, you're talking about the joy that you're taking in from the surroundings and that is so powerful. 05 Oct 2024 | Hurricane Helene in Southwest Virginia: Status of Trails/Parks/Public Lands, Our Outdoor Community Can Help (Special Edition) | 00:12:57
Hi Friends, If you’re like me, you’ve been watching the news about the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene and wondering what you can do to help. Our communities in Southwest Virginia have been hit hard and many of the places we know and love will be impacted for years to come. What you’re about to hear is a conversation I had with Amanda Livingston, Director of Tourism in Smyth County Virginia. Smyth is located in between Abingdon and Wytheville and is home to a portion of Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, as well as our first state park, Hungry Mother. The charming small town of Marion is a trail town in the center of Smyth County, where thousands of Appalachian Trail hikers stop to rest and refuel. Amanda shares how the storm has impacted the communities of southwest Virginia, provides us with an update on the status of our trails, parks, and public lands, and most importantly, she emphasis the power we have as an outdoor community to help by simply doing what we love… visiting and enjoying the incredible outdoor assets Appalachia provides. And please do share this episode with your friends and neighbors and suggest they plan a visit when Southwest Virginia is ready to host visitors again. Together, we can make a difference for our neighbors, right here in Virginia. Keep an eye on my Instagram page @virginia_outdoor_adventures and Facebook page @vaoapodcast for news and announcements. And now, the bonus episode. You may remember Linda and Mandi from She Opts Out who where my guests in Episode 14. After appearing on Virginia Outdoor Adventures, they invited me to be a guest on their show, which recently aired on She Opts Out Podcast. As a show host, I’m more used to asking the questions rather than answering them, but it was fun to chat with Linda and Mandi about my background, how I got into the outdoors, and how Virginia Outdoor Adventures Podcast started. I also got to talk about building an outdoor community in Virginia, completing Trail Quest by visiting every Virginia State Park, and some of my most memorable hikes. Also included in our discussion – solo hiking and solo adventuring, outdoor safety, my gear, four-season hiking, one of my personal fears (which is probably not what you would expect), and my advice for beginner adventurers. Without further ado, here is my first guest appearance on She Opts Out Podcast. Let’s Go! “Some of the things that continue to draw me back to the outdoors are the connections I make with others, which tend to be richer when I'm connecting with them outside. The more we learn how to work with nature instead of trying to dominate nature, the happier and healthier both will be. We can receive better nutrition from the soil, but also we can be a society where we value what the soil feeds us and we give back to the Earth.” - Cory Suter, Suters Glen Permaculture Farm Support the show: Buy Me A Coffee Fan Mail - Send Jessica a Text Message Contact show host, Jessica Bowser: jessica@virginiaoutdooradventures.com
