This 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts is a fun conversation I shared recently with Matt Dunn from the YouTube Channel Prime Analog Records and his daughter Bennett to discuss record collecting + music consumption in a "new school vs. old school" kind of way. Like most dads, Matt instilled his love of music early in Bennett's formative years, and we talk about why he felt it was important to share a diverse offering of musical styles + artists with her. Whereas Matt and myself were conditioned (#olds) to consume our music through physical media, Bennett is part of newer generations of listeners who employ their device(s) of choice to stream music: for discovery, ease, and convenience alike. Without the dominant influence of traditional terrestrial radio, how do we discover new bands + new music without having to spend inordinate amounts of time doing so? From there, Bennett takes us on a walk of her own music journey, including touching on admiration of present day artists like Taylor Swift, country music, and how she finds new music through streaming services while still building a record collection uniquely her own. In part one of the inaugural "Mind of The Record Collector", I talk to a longtime member of the #VC on YouTube, Matt Sands (aka DJ Mellow Yellow). In over 10 years of creating videos on YouTube, he's seen a lot of shifts and changes in the hobby and on YouTube from record collectors. He's also one of handful of VC members who took his love of vinyl and music to the next level by owning + operating his own record store (Gold Pan Records - Hillsboro, IL). As someone who initially learned of and from videos Matt (+ Sam aka The Psych Professor) have shared over the years, this is a conversation I've been eager to put together for some time. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. As the "vinyl resurgence" continues to go full speed ahead, the mastering side of things is in great hands with Cicely and other mastering engineers taking the baton from their predecessors. Both have been fans of her work for over a decade, and share similar paths to learning about her and following her musical journey since. Grace began her music career some time ago, most notably in the band bearing her name - Grace Potter and The Nocturnals - starting around 2005. This was the starting point for our hosts, with both discovering her music right around the same time in 2011. After several years and releases with the band, Grace forged a new direction with the release of her first solo work - "Midnight" - in 2015. A callback in several ways to artists of yesteryear, she evokes the fire of Janis Joplin, the showstopping stage chops of Tina Turner, incredible musicianship across multiple instruments, and the songwriting of some of the great rock writers of the modern era. On her latest release - "Mother Road" - we find her clearly in her own lane, with clear direction on her sound, her songs, and her music as she points her car forward into the distant horizon. What do the guys think of the new album? How do they feel about her penchant for releasing her work on vinyl?  And what album/songs would they recommend to someone new to her music? Something different for you with this one, Buddies. For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Chad and Drew from Vintage Media Grading (VMG). The guys were kind enough to inform and share what their business is about: namely, introducing a new way to collect vinyl into the marketplace. Taking cues from other collectible spaces like sports cards, comic books, etc., VMG offers third party grading services on vinyl records, including "slabbing", which is commonplace in those aforementioned hobbies. As VMG has been gaining awareness in the hobby, there's some natural questions that come from this new way to collect vinyl records. More recently known as The Vinyl Archivist, Patrick is a fixture in the community, running multiple livestreams each week on his channel. We jump into learning about his start on YouTube, within the Vinyl Community, and the beginnings of his record collection. Additionally, Patrick is well known in and outside the community for his process in finding, ripping, and storing the best sounding recordings on vinyl. What started at the end of the first decade in Patrick converting analog recordings to a digital database has earned him high praise and standing in the "ripper" community. We get into that, what his process and approach to ripping albums looks like, and how that impacts the titles on wax he chases to this day. What is it like to create at every possible step of a project - writing the music, organizing the production, overseeing the mastering, promoting the project, then touring on it (I'm tired just writing that!). Plus, Nick is super passionate about vinyl and it was a MUST that this album (and the preceding title SUN VIA) came out on the format. Here's quick bio:

Frank Secich (born June 14, 1951) is an American rock musician, songwriter, author and record producer. He was the bass player and founding member of the group Blue Ash from 1969 to 1979 and guitarist and bassist for the Stiv Bators band from 1979 until 1981. He played in the Cleveland-based group Club Wow with Jimmy Zero of the Dead Boys from 1982 to 1985 and produced the Ohio band the Infidels from 1985 to 1990. He is currently the rhythm guitarist for the Deadbeat Poets who were formed in 2006 in Youngstown, Ohio. Frank Secich's autobiography "Circumstantial Evidence" was published by High Voltage Publishing of Australia in 2015. His second book "Not That Way Anymore" was published in November 2023 by High Voltage Publishing. His current band, The Deadbeat Poets are on Pop Detective Records, which is owned by Mark Hershberger.

In 1973, Youngstown, OH Band Blue Ash released their debut record "No More, No Less" to critical acclaim. (Alex note: not only do I critically acclaim it, I put it up there with one of the best Power Pop records of the 70s and all time!). Welcome aboard for Part 2 of the Safe and Sound Texas Audio Excursion conversation with Susan Rogers: record producer + engineer turned brain scientist who pursued learning the role of an audio technician by reading and working on equipment early in her career. Her big break to work for Prince in 1983 gave this self-starter the education of a lifetime with the megastar whose own penchant for learning, experiencing, teaching, and recording are well documented. From there, her studio experiences expanded into independent engineering, producing and mixing in the 1990's. At that time Susan achieved further success producing the Barenaked Ladies 4x platinum breakout smash "Stunt". She eventually phased out of in-studio work to attend college and earned a degree and Ph.D. in the areas of Music Cognition, Perception and Psychoacoustics. In September of 2022, her long anticipated book debuted: “This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You". In this book, the legendary record producer–turned–brain scientist explains why you fall in love with music and how you do it. The book can be found at all fine book retailers. Steve runs a terrific channel on YouTube, complete with regular content and interviews with a litany of guests in the Vinyl Community. Josh shares his personal journey as a collector along that road and shares his thoughts on the hobby today, how he sources his inventory, and even shares how he's added 21st century social marketing techniques to put the best pieces in the hands of the best collectors anywhere. Josh has a burgeoning presence on social media, including his own YouTube channel sharing information, tips, and details he's honed in his 20 years plus in the business.
