Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots (Cory Johnson and Kent Morton DVM)

The Idiots discuss paying for veterinary medicine in this week’s episode, and why the costs can get to what is perceived as high. Remember, if you don’t pay your bill, you’re not just scum, they know where you live. Doctors often have a huge degree (no pun intended) of debt they come out of vet school with to keep your pet alive and being the best version of themselves. If you are facing hardships, google is your best friend. There are often clinics and resources in the community that can help with low income families with veterinary care. Some food banks actually have pet medicine and food, as well. People care about your dogs and cats and other animals. Please, if you cannot afford the proper care for your pet, wait rather than letting them suffer with mediocre care, and add to your family when you can properly afford them, but should hardships strike, know there are resources that can help, both for you and your pets. Call 211, your local United Way resource, and they may be able to help. And again, google is an amazing resource. The Common Idiot uses it often to find resources for his clients in his regular job.

We've reached the end of season 2, Idiot Army! The Idiots close out the season in a role reversal, with Dr Kent hosting and Cory co-hosting. Cory pitches nontraditional, nonmainstream, and nonscientific medicine to Kent, who shoots them all down. Discussions include antivaxxing, amber beads, and other whack crackadoo stuff. It's a good time. They also do a small mail call, talk about the future, and discuss what NHL players Cory would beat up in a fight.

Mini...kinda. We screwed up. We discussed our favorite hockey players. We're Idiots, but we're also sports nerds, especially when it comes to hockey. The Idiots discuss holistic medicine (not the pseudoscience “crystals and burning sage” version, but the whole body mentality) with Dr. Tim Combs, whose resume puts most people to shame. He’s certified in basically everything, so he’s the Everything Idiot. Discussions in this episode include lasers, acupuncture, rehabilitation, penis jokes, dog massages, and the metal scene. Oh, and Combs is the founder of an emo metal pet clothing company, Disgust Clothing. Apologies, there was something in the recording that caused interference. The sound editor did the best he could do, but The Idiots only pay him nothing. They say it’s intern work, and builds character. Cheap pricks!

In a season of return guests, another makes a come back. Amber Johnson, Idiot Brain Witch extraordinaire, touches on mental health again, and steps you can do to help keep mental health in check. Be it self care, calming techniques, or just being kind to yourself in general, you matter, and vets have incredibly stressful jobs. Yours might be, too, if your career isn't in the veterinary medicine world. Maybe you're unemployed or a stay at home parent. Mental health, self care, and calming techniques aren't limited to stressful jobs. It's an episode that can speak to anyone. Give a listen and be kind to your mind.

Did you know that dogs can get STDs!? Well, now you do. You'll hear about exchanges of fluids from body secretions. It's more entertaining than it sounds. The Idiots also discuss spaying and neutering. They didn't give me much to work with for an episode description. Does anyone even really read these? Anyway, bullet points-dogs can get STDs, the disease can jump species, Bob Barker made neutering gender specific to dogs, Kent doesn't like milk but does love cheese, Cory can't make sense of this. The Idiots discuss Canine Influenza and Kennel Cough in this riveting episode. Learn about how to keep your dogs safe (spoiler, it's cautionary exposure and vaccination) and learn that birds are actually animals, not drones. Also, they teach you that oxygen is paramount to living! They also shamelessly plug our new treats often, but they're proud of them! They are good, I'll admit. My dog told me. 

This mini touches on separation anxiety, and some of the things you can do to help it. Oh, and a touching (and terrifying) story about Tazer. 

On the newest episode, The Idiots discuss US presidents fighting zombies and vampires. Yes, this has nothing to do with the topic, but, if you've been listening this long to these guys, you know how terribly quick they get derailed. They do eventually get on task, and discuss declawing cats. They dive into how it is done, if there is a good time to declaw, and alternatives. Also, Dr Kent gets a little deep and introspective, which is rare. Scary even. Enjoy!

We've touched on this before, but it's a good topic for all to be reminded on. The relationship with a client and vet is very important. Be open, be kind, be honest. Don't be a jerk. Don't try to guilt trip. They're doing the best they can for your pets, and you being a monster is going to only make the animal suffer. These vets are humans. Also, as they are humans, do remember there are established boundaries that must be kept. They may love your pet, your pleasant disposition, your behavior, and your business, but they may not necessarily want to be best friends with you. Nothing personal, just, it's their life and sometimes needs to be kept private. 

Very simple premise to this episode- what is the largest animal that you think you could take in a fight? Let's be real, humans, we're kind of useless meat sacks compared to most animals out there. 

In today's episode, The Idiots speak with Melissa Sluiter, parent of the first FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) patient Dr. Kent saw beat the odds and survive. FIP has historically been the kiss of death, and now, with pushes from brave owners like Melissa and Idiot Doctors like Kent, it is both survivable, and 100% legal in the US.

That's where Dr. Maddy Golichowski (or as Kent says "Gahlowzzskckksheeee") comes in. Dr. Maddy is well into her second year as a practicing vet, which allows her the hindsight of a first year without the distance in time obscuring her view. We talk pros, cons, and difficulties with being green in the field. Listen up, this rookie is going to do great things, and The Idiots were happy to be along for the ride.

They discuss the pros and cons of having bulldogs (expect to spend a whole lot of money, just sayin'). They also cover the world of veterinary technician work, the good, bad, and wormy. The Idiots host Melinda, the Rescue Idiot, who schools the boys on shelter life, rescues, and dives into how these worlds collide. Every dog owner has one day that is always going to be worse than any others. Any dog owner that has gone through this knows how horrible it is. With this in mind, it's very difficult to make the decision to say goodbye. The Idiots are joined by Dr. Penny, a euthanasia expert, and discuss the ironic piece that the most care and love anyone can do is making the right call to send your furry companion across the Rainbow Bridge. They discuss how to know when the time is right, and put different spins on the topic to let you know that you're absolutely doing the right thing. They still try to keep levity on a topic that is hard to cover.

Howdy young Idiots! If last week's episode didn't sell you on the easy and gravy career path of a veterinarian with exciting tales of clinicals, this one will really grab you when we talk about resident work with the Resident Doctor Idiots, Dr Rigo and Dr Louie. They discuss the world of internships and residencies, the difference between private practice vs acadamia from a resident standpoint, how to make a bionic frog (we can rebuild him, we can make his stronger, faster, ribbitier), and other fascinating things. Plus, Dr. Kent makes fun of other people than Cory. 

This weeks episode brings the Doctors Fernandez (@thedoctorsfernandez) who discusses mixed animal clinics, what it takes to work on a kangaroo and an owl, why you should learn to duck faster if you are castrating a bull, and why they are an incredible resource for all the young Pre-Vet Med Idiots out there. Also, Kent and Cory say some stuff, but does anyone really listen when they talk?

The Idiots discuss dog mods, specifically dewclaws, ear cropping, and tail chopping. If you are a AKC aficionado or a 1700s hunter, you may really want to pay attention. Basically, this is it in the episode. If there was one to skip, it's this one. Normal episodes are terrible, but this one is bad even for the Idiot's standards. Cory the Common Idiot does start with a joke, which is fun. It peaks 13 seconds in. 

The Idiots talk about their dogs, both here today and living immortalized in their minds, in a rather emotional and heartfelt episode. Brief stories and anecdotes fill an hour and half episode that easily could have been 3 days if The Idiots were allotted the time to give the honor these pets deserve. Episode 20- Mental Health in the Vet World. The Idiots are joined by Idiot Brainwitch Amber, LLMSW (and a whole lot of other letters) who discusses the importance of boundaries, mental health, and staying safe in your own head. The episode goes a little off the walls, as you would imagine with three neurodivergent people. If you are in the veterinary world, this is a must listen. If you are not, this also is a good listen as burnout and secondhand trauma exists in many careers. We also discuss the importance of boundaries and that veterinarians do not owe you anything, even if you sorta kinda knew them in high school over a decade ago. Don’t be cheap, don’t be an ass.

We have had people ask to get to know The Idiots better. We are using minis to try to let people know a little more about us. This one is about our favorite movies. 

It goes without saying that our favorite movies we say are right after the last Angela Bassett movie. However many movies she has done, our number 1s start after that last movie of hers.

This week, The Idiots bring on The Oncology Idiot, Dr. Christopher Fulkerson, who is at the forefront of cancer research for animals. Join us as we break down why there isn't a simple cure for cancer, the ways we are advancing in medicine, how the research process goes, and why animal research is great for humans, as breakthroughs with the former can jump to the latter. 

Also, Dr. Kent ALMOST laughs at Cory's joke, so that's exciting. 

The Idiots host another vet, Dr Erin, who works exclusively with large animals, especially the edible kind. They discuss the common day for the Large Animal Idiot, emergencies, animal dongs, and why you shouldn’t let your chickens play with other chickens! This one is a little extra NSFW.

Happy Holidays!!!! With the holiday season coming up, we know it is important to have a reminder of what is safe and unsafe for your favorite pooch to eat. Encompassing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all other feasts from now til the end of the year, it is very common for vet visits to spike after these days due to dogs being exposed to too many different foods. 

In a first, the Idiots are in person together. As they have always attempted to make this show feel like you are sitting around a dining room table having a drink and talking with them, they lean entirely into it. This is an entirely uncut episode, every awkward pause, every grumble from the dogs, background noise, even a couple interruptions from friend of the show and wife of Cory, Amber, the Brainwitch Idiot, to bring delicious macarons. This is as close as hanging with the Idiots as you can get. Plus, you get to avoid smelling Mutie's noxious gas drops.

Welcome back! Season 3 is finally here! We should all be excited!

The boys welcome their first quasi-celebrity, Dr. Dean Scott, vet extraordinaire. It addition to being a vet (in both senses, spending 5 years in the US Army Veterinary Corps), he is a multi-genre published author. He is currently working on the third of the "Dragon Vet" Series, with the second, "The Dragon Vet's Apprentice" released in October of 2023. He does not stop at fantasy, though. This week, The Idiots discuss White Coat Syndrome, which is a phenomenon where nerves override the body in anticipation of seeing a doctor. Can be the building, the area, the lobby, the doctor-something just gets ahold of the animals. This can happen to humans, as well. We are lobbying for a new law where pizza and tacos are given free at the doctor, to make it more enjoyable and to relate good with the clinic. We do the same with animals! Anyway, listen in to hear about WCS, how you can help your pets get through it, and the pitfalls of failing to be prepared for a visit with an anxious dog. Just remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. 

Another episode, another double dose of why you need to vaccinate your dogs, or they'll end up like Edgar Allan Poe. Or something. I don't know.
