27 May 2024The Environmental Impact of the Cruise Industry with Marcie Keever from Friends of the Earth00:57:56

Find out more about the Cruise Ship Report Card from Friends of the Earth here https://foe.org/cruise-report-card/

Welcome to the 15th episode of the "Veggies Abroad Vegan Travel Podcast," hosted by Rebecca Gade Sawicki, where we explore vegan-friendly and eco-conscious travel. In this episode, Rebecca dives into the environmental impacts of the cruise industry, highlighting the staggering pollution and unethical practices associated with cruising. She is joined by Marcie Keever from Friends of the Earth, who shares insights on the detrimental effects of cruise ships on marine life and communities. They discuss the industry's misleading green initiatives and the urgent need for stricter regulations. Rebecca and Marcie also explore potential solutions and emerging technologies that could mitigate these impacts, urging listeners to make informed travel choices.

  1. "Cruise ships produce and dump large amounts of sewage and other waste like millions of gallons into our oceans, polluting our beaches, contaminating our coral reefs, and destroying our valuable marine ecology."
  2. "Our (Friends of the Earth's) analysis of a land-based vacation in Seattle versus a cruise departing from Seattle heading to Alaska and back, is that the land-based vacation has a CO2 footprint that is eight times lower than the cruise."
  3. "Disney has been at the top of our (Friends of the Earth's) report card, but it's been incredibly disappointing in the last few years, and we've downgraded their grade because they continue to go in the wrong direction when it comes to environmental impact."

Key Takeaways:

  • The cruise industry significantly contributes to ocean and air pollution, harming marine life and coastal communities.
  • Despite some companies' claims of eco-friendliness, many continue to prioritize profits over environmental responsibility.
  • Land-based vacations have a considerably lower carbon footprint compared to cruise vacations.
  • Some cruise lines, like Disney, have made strides in environmental practices but still fall short in critical areas.
  • Consumers can make a positive impact by choosing more sustainable travel options and supporting companies with transparent and effective environmental policies.

Katherine sheds light on what it really means to be an ethical sanctuary, the rigorous daily routines needed for elephant care, and how Boon Lott’s is committed to providing a forever home for elephants—and support for the community that helped make it possible.

02 Sep 2024Vegan travel in Japan01:23:19

Welcome to the Veggies Abroad Vegan Travel Podcast, with your host Rebecca Gade Sawicki. In this 21st episode, Rebecca and her travel partner, Matt Gade Sawicki, dive deep into their recent adventure in Japan.

They discuss the challenges and highlights of navigating vegan cuisine in cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, while also offering tips on traveling during Japan's notoriously hot summer.

Whether you're curious about Japanese culture, vegan food, or travel logistics, this episode provides a comprehensive and entertaining guide.

Key Takeaways

  • Navigating Vegan Options: Japan offers a surprising array of vegan options, especially in major cities, but it’s essential to plan ahead and use tools like Google Translate for ingredient checks.
  • Travel Timing: Summer is the worst time to visit Japan due to extreme heat and humidity. Consider visiting in the spring or fall instead.
  • Cultural Etiquette: Japan is a very polite and mindful society, with specific cultural norms like quiet public spaces and a lack of public trash cans.
  • Public Transit: The train system is highly efficient but requires attention to detail, especially regarding luggage restrictions and the difference between local and rapid trains.

  • Hidden Gems: Despite Japan’s reputation for traditional cuisine, you can find vegan versions of most local dishes, such as ramen, takoyaki, and okonomiyaki, by seeking out specialized restaurants.

07 Apr 2025Is Your Travel Money Really Helping? A Look at Tourism Leakage with Sooz Shanker00:50:10

Portugal Vegan Tour: https://veggiesabroad.com/portugal-vegan-tour-2025/

On this episode of the Veggies Abroad Podcast, Rebecca is joined by Susanna “Sooz” Shanker, founder of Curiosity Saves Travel, to talk about something many travellers never think about: where your money actually goes when you're on holiday. It turns out, a lot less stays in the local community than you'd expect — sometimes as little as 5 cents on the dollar. This concept is known as tourism leakage, and it's a big deal.

Sooz breaks it down in an easy-to-understand way, sharing why tourism doesn’t always benefit the people and places we visit, and what can be done about it. They also chat about the role of cruise lines, resort chains, and seasonal jobs in perpetuating the problem — plus, how governments, tourism boards, and you, the traveller, can start to turn things around.

In this episode:

  • What tourism leakage is and how it affects communities
  • Why spending money doesn’t always mean you’re helping
  • Examples of destinations doing it better
  • Practical ways travellers can keep more money in local hands
  • Why little decisions — like who you book with or where you eat — matter

Whether you're planning your next big trip or just want to be a more conscious traveller, this is a must-listen.
