We’re diving into the topic of generational perspectives at work in this episode where I will represent the Gen Xers, along with my guests Shanta Hareesh, who comes from the Millennial Generation, and Poppy Couling, from Gen Z. 03 Apr 2023The ADHD Advantage: How to Capitalize on Your Unique Abilities with Brooke Schnittman00:36:36

Send me a message!

ADHD is an invisible disorder that is often misdiagnosed, undiagnosed or sometimes masked from employers and the rest of the world. Brooke Schnittman joins me on this episode to tell us about her journey to becoming an ADHD Coach. Our conversation covers a lot of ground including how we can make workplaces more welcome for people with ADHD.

Brooke started out as a special education teacher working with students with ADHD disability and the whole time didn't know that she herself had ADHD. In an effort to make a bigger impact, she found ADHD coaching and now works with a team of coaches currently on a path to help 10 million individuals with ADHD over the next 5 years.

She'll talk about ....

  • the different types of ADHD, symptoms, and treatments
  • The majority of people in the workplace have a disability, but only 30% disclose it
  • ADHD and anxiety are considered disabilities under the "other health impaired" category
  • why it is very common for people to have more than just ADHD

You might be surprised by some of the gifts that people with ADHD possess.

06 Mar 2023The inconvenience of being human with Mara Glatzel00:57:33

Send me a message!

In this episode, we’ll explore the idea of having needs and the consequences of ignoring them with intuitive coach, writer, and podcast host, Mara Glatzel. Mara will help us understand that it's okay to have needs and how we can embrace them as a courageous act of care of ourselves.

Mara deeply understands how we often relegate our needs to the bottom of a long to-do list in an attempt to prove our worth. She believes that the ultimate act of self-care is rebuilding the breach in our relationship with ourselves so that we can truly feel seen, heard, and adored by ourselves.

We dive into what it means to be human and have needs, how our definition of success can drive us to override our needs, and the consequences of ignoring them, including burnout, exhaustion, and illness. Mara also shares the importance of rest, not just physical rest, but also the need for inspiration and joy, which she calls active rest. This is a rich conversation that will help you understand and embrace your needs as an essential part of being human.

You can find Mara at @maraglatzel and her website, her new book, and her podcast.

13 Mar 2023Beyond Pleasing Everyone: Unpacking your leadership style00:08:54

Send me a message!

This week, we explore leadership styles. I expect like me you never spent much time thinking about it. Until you wanted to adapt or change how you showed up and the impact you were having.

There are thousands of leadership style models out there. Most are very smart and academic routed in research. Whilst this is interesting, it’s seldom a useful starting point for YOU.

So this week, I unpack one of the well-known and respected leadership style models. You will be clearer on your default leadership style as well as what potential growth area there is for you to develop range.

I created a quiz that will tell you in 8-questions what your leadership style is. 2-minutes is all that’s required to get insight into your strengths, how you derail yourself, and next steps.

And here's how the styles from the model discussed in the episode map to the quiz results:

Visionary -> Pioneer

Democratic -> Co-creator

Affiliative -> Unifier

03 Jul 2023What I learnt from burning my life down (twice)00:14:51

Send me a message!

This week, I’m getting personal and sharing how I burnt down my life, not once but twice! The times when I stripped back my life to the bare bones -  got rid of relationships, people and jobs that weren’t working.

In both occasions, I didn’t realise what I was doing or the long term impact. My hope in sharing my story is that we can get to have open conversations about how we navigate change more consciously in our lives. To the benefit of ourselves and all the people in our lives.

CW: I cover some difficult topics in this episode, so please choose if this is the right time to listen.

07 Aug 2023Encore: the emotional toll of racism with Michelle Tackie-Obende00:44:27

Send me a message!

This episode is a re-release from earlier in the season whilst I take a break over summer.

This has been the most downloaded episode of series 1 which is not surprising and at the same time heart warming. This episode is packed with insights and tips that are just as relevant today as they were when we first aired it. Whether you're hearing it for the first time or revisiting it, there's plenty to take away.
Let’s have the hard conversation about racism – again.

With my guest, Michelle Tackie Obende, we discuss:

  • The importance of educating yourself about bias and racism without relying on marginalized communities to do all the work.
  • Recognizing and challenging bias
  • Her own experiences as a black woman, emphasizing how being alert to discrimination is an essential part of her everyday life.
  • How her perfectionism is both a survival mechanism and a challenge
  • How she now feels she can speak up, representing and advocating for those who may not feel as empowered in her own organisation.

This is an open and honest communication about experiences of discrimination and I’m grateful to Michelle for sharing her experience on this episode.

The episode aims to shine a light on the often-unspoken truth of racism in the workplace and to start important conversations around this topic.

You can connect with Michelle on LinkedIn,  check out the anti-racist reading lists here, and test your own  conscious and unconscious preferences by taking test here.

02 Oct 2023Your questions answered: Procrastination00:26:57

Send me a message!

This week’s episode takes a practical turn as we tackle a listener's workplace dilemma.

Procrastination.

Even if you don’t identify yourself as a procrastinator (and this episode might change that), you probably know someone who is. We often overcoming procrastination as just a matter of discipline and hard work. But as you will see from this conversation, it can go so much deeper.
We kick off with a useful coaching tool that can help when you get unstuck on this topic or anything else.
We also touch on:

🔶 the need to consider how our perspective influences our relationship with tasks and projects.
🔶 how procrastination may be a signal of other conditions
🔶 how by connecting to the purpose and importance of a project, even mundane tasks can become more manageable and fulfilling.

My guest is fellow coach, and friend Rona Steinberg. She believes everyone - whether they are noisy, quiet or something else ... has the capacity to be Out Loud. 29 Apr 2024Lessons from 100 coffees with Matt Ballantine00:48:18

Send me a message!

Ever thought about the impact that 100 coffee conversations could have on your career and networking opportunities?

In this episode, we dive deep into Matt Ballantine's 100 coffees project, exploring the ins and outs of making meaningful connections in a post-COVID world.

Matt Ballantine, has almost 3 decades of experience in transformation initiatives -- as he puts it -- getting people and tech to work together better. He's worked for a wide range of organisations like Reuters and BBC.

And today, he's an engagement manager at Equal Experts, a London based consultancy. And a podcast host of WB-40 where he talks to guests about tech and how it's changing the way we work.

In our conversation, which feels much like what I expect a coffee conversation would be like with him, I ask him all about the project -- the origin story and lessons learnt.

And we still manage to cover topics like:

-       The liminal spaces at work vs water cooler moments

-       Apophenia -- the human ability to make connections in unrelated things,

-       how protestant work ethic gets in the way of a project like 100 coffees.

20 May 2024Finding direction and meaning in your life with James Cobbett00:44:51

Send me a message!

This week's episode we talk about finding direction and meaning in our lives featuring James Cobbett. We discuss his journey of discovering his purpose and the importance of uncovering one's "why" statement.

He reflects on his transition from working in a charity part-time to pursuing freelance web design full-time, highlighting a shift in his search for meaningful work beyond just financial stability.

10 Jun 2024Gender Identity, Leadership and Workplace Inequality00:44:16

Send me a message!

"Bring yourself to work" is all the rage in workplaces, but are we truly accepted for who we are?

In today's episode, I explore this question with my guest, Amethysta Herrick. She shares how she had to "squelch who I was because I had to."

We dive into the challenges of the transgender experience, the pressures of capitalism, and the importance of staying true to oneself. We chat about her personal journey in the tech industry, her experiences bouncing between societal expectations and her true self, and the profound impact of truly listening and valuing others' perspectives.

About Amethysta Herrick, Ph.D.: Amethysta is a writer, podcaster, and activist focusing on the origin and nature of identity, especially gender. With a background as a geneticist, chemist, software engineer, and manager, her greatest challenge has been addressing the misconception that identity and gender are concerns only for the LGBTQ community. Instead, she teaches that identity is an ongoing process every human engages in throughout life.

If you think most organizational values aren’t worth the paper they are written on, then this is the episode for you.

My guest, Jackie Le Fèvre, is the perfect person for this discussion. With a PhD in human values psychology and a background in zoology and human behaviour, Jackie brings deep insights into understanding people.

💡 What’s the point of organizational values (since most seem pointless)?

💡How can leaders and teams use them effectively?

💡What’s the link between culture and values?

💡What do good values look like?

Jackie shares specific examples of meaningful corporate values and how they’ve been applied in recruitment, procurement, and during crises.

24 Jun 2024Company values in the hotseat00:23:42

Send me a message!

23% of U.S. employees strongly agree that they can apply their organization’s values to their work every day, and only 27% “believe in” their organization’s values.

And yet every organisation has them.

In today’s episode, we are reclaiming the role of organisation values with my guest, Jackie Le Fèvre. We put common corporate values in the hotseat – like integrity and ethics – and explore why they make cynics out of us all.

Jackie has her PHD is human values psychology and is the perfect person to geek out on this question.

This episode is a follow on from the last week – so if you haven’t listened to that one, go back and listen to that first.
