Brule Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Boundary Waters that does not allow any motorboats and its direct access makes it a great option for quick weekend trip, or for those looking to introduce kids or first timers to the wilderness experience. Saganaga Lake is one of the largest lakes in all of the Boundary Waters and offers the most overnight paddling permits of any entry point (#55) on the Gunflint Trail. It’s the first episode in our Route Guide Series! The lakes on this route are very popular with base campers. They are small and loaded with fish. Walleye, Bass and Northern Pike are plentiful with some of the side lakes offering Lake Trout as well. A trip to Johnson Falls should not be missed whilst spending time in this area. You can take this route and return to Bearskin for pick-up or paddle right back to Clearwater Lodge.
