I am currently in Mexico for a month housesitting and dog sitting all by myself. It has been a huge slow down for me filled with more solitude than I've had in a long time. 

This was something I knew I needed and have been extremely excited about. And it has given me some great insight to my nervous system and the pattern of busy, go-go-go, do-do-do that I learned to keep me safe. I'm uncovering the ways my system tries to achieve safety when I slow down, like loneliness, boredom, and anxiety. 

If you also struggle with this pattern, or even if you don't, I highly recommend taking a listen and see what awareness this brings to your own protective mechanisms! 

This also includes a really fun spider story! Yay! (I do not like spiders, and they certainly activate my nervous system, haha)!

This is the first interview airing on the podcast! I talk with Dr. Tawny Kross, a physical therapist who specializes in chronic pain. So much of what she shares about her mind-body approach applies to those who struggle with chronic symptoms.

Dr. Tawny Kross graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Duke University in 2013.

She has worked in a Veterans Affairs hospital for nearly a decade now. Through the course of her practice, she has developed a very comprehensive and integrative approach to PT, which evolved from the necessity of such an approach in her work with the complexities of those who have chronic pain. This includes nutrition, hypnosis, guided imagery, mindfulness among other practices.

Focusing on mental health and being trauma-sensitive is of particular importance, as many of her clients have experienced military sexual trauma. She helps her clients move beyond pain and fear by connecting them with internal motivations, guiding them to see innate strengths and realize their inner healing abilities.   She recently started her own business, Kross Centered Care - Integrative PT, Health and Wellness in order to bring her expertise to more people.

Oh, bloating. One of the most common symptoms I hear folks complaining about when it comes to their gut. Bloating was the daily norm for me for so much of my life. The morning would start fine but by the end of the day my stomach would look pregnant.

If you experience this you know just how uncomfortable and disheartening it can be. These are the most common reasons behind bloating that I’ve experience in myself, my clients, and in working with gut health and the nervous system. Some of these may be more root cause, and some may be symptoms of a root cause.

18 Aug 202219. I Lost Weight By Exercising Less, Eating More, & Supporting My Nervous System00:32:45

Talking about weight loss is not something I do, nor it is anything I work with clients on, or promote. Weight has nothing to do with gut health, mental health, or the kind of health and healing I promote. This title is meant to be a little controversial to grab your attention and offer a different idea behind weight loss and diet culture. We have been told forever that we need to exercise more and eat less to lose weight, and we are bombarded with images and messages about what the ideal body type is.

It's all bullshit, and it feeds into so many people developing disordered eating, orthorexia, and body images issues, which I have personally struggled with, and have found to be a very common thing among my clients. Many people with gut issues have become afraid of foods, macronutrients, and can easily develop an obsession with eating clean.

So everyone these days is talking about finding the "root" cause. What does that actually mean? In this episode, I break down gut-brain symptoms and what I have come to understand as the true root cause for most of them, and it is not SIBO, dysbiosis, or low stomach acid.

It's so overwhelming to have digestive symptoms and turn to Google to find they could be from so many different sources. You may come across low stomach acid, SIBO, dysbiosis, candida overgrowth, or leaky gut. Maybe you even have tested and found out you do have one of these dysfunctions. However, I don't believe these to be the root issues in most cases. Listen in to understand why!

26 Oct 202225. Debunking Popular Gut Health Recommendations: Fiber, FODMAPs, Prebiotics & Probiotics01:03:41

If you go to Google and search for how to best support your gut, you will come across some common recommendations: eat a ton of vegetables, eat lots of fiber, take a probiotic, take a prebiotic! 

If you struggle with IBS, or have been diagnosed with SIBO, then you'll likely hear to eat a low-FODMAP diet. 

Let me break these suggestions down and debunk them - because they aren't all true for everybody!

As mentioned in the episode, here is the list of hearty probiotic species that withstand stomach acid:

Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium animalis, Bacillus coagulans, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus

Join Haley and I as we talk about her experience with serious digestive issues that were not fixed by a celiac diagnosis and going gluten free - but rather by looking at deeper aspects of herself. A large part of her healing was through the support of Chinese medicine, which helped her understand what emotional aspects were driving her symptoms, and by connecting more deeply to herself. This led her into becoming an acupuncturist, and she shares her wisdom of this approach to healing with us! 

In Chinese medicine, the physical body is not seen as separate from the emotional body, but absolutely intertwined. When looking at physical symptoms this type of healing considers the emotional aspects behind these physical manifestations. This is so important to understand and could absolutely change your life, and help heal your symptoms for good. Understanding how our emotions are contributing to our symptoms and overall health is an important part of the work I do with clients and in my program, and Haley brings such a beautiful guidance to understanding some of this.

IBS is so frustrating. It's mostly just a catch all phrase for a doctor to say "I don't actually know what is causing your symptoms." I struggled with IBS-C (constipation dominant) for so much of my life. 

The thing is... IBS is a dysfunction of the gut-brain connection. Therefore, how our nervous system is functioning is essential when it comes to IBS. In fact, 50 - 74% of people diagnosed with IBS report having childhood trauma or adverse early life experiences. An incredible statistic that shows just how impactful chronic and traumatic stress is on our gut health, and how supporting the nervous system is such a key piece.

Your mindset around your symptoms and overall health matters.

And sometimes just trying to shift your mindset can be really tough, especially if you are dysregulated in your nervous system or have experienced trauma.

So this is a way to bring the body into connection with the negative thoughts you are having, and to establish positive thoughts around your symptoms.

Emotions are a direct line to the body when you bring awareness to where you feel them. That can be more motivating and impactful than just telling yourself to change your mind.
