24 Aug 2024The Ancient Tribe of Kalash Valley00:30:53

After a brief tea break where we almost converted to Islam, we made our way to Kalash Valley, to stay with the indigenous Kalash people: an ancient tribe residing in the area for thousands of years. Kalash Valley is both beautiful and peaceful, and if you stay there long enough, you may just get invited to a wedding!

The Kalash people are considered unique among the people of Pakistan; with a population of around 4000, they traditionally practice a form of ancient Hinduism. The women are known for wearing incredibly bright and decorative handmade garments, which you may have already seen on a documentary or two! Thought to be the descendants of Alexander the Great's warriors, some Kalash people have fair skin, blonde hair and blue eyes.

27 May 2023Tales of a Trip: Nazca Lines, Peru.00:37:23

Adam & Alun return to the TRIPOLOGY studio for another edition of Tales of a Trip. This week, Alun relives his serendipitous couchsurfing experience in Nazca, Peru. The Ancient Gods were looking down on Alun, as they not only granted him a free night's accommodation, but a place on the couch of a leading expert on the awe-inspiring geoglyphs, The Nazca Lines. Alun's "perfect cultural exchange" awarded him the opportunity of flying over the geoglyphs in a light aircraft; he was even asked to record an English version of the presentation given at the Maria Reiche museum, which can still be heard to this day!

Stay tuned to hear our take on the common 'Backpacker Stereotypes'. Travel is for everyone, and many types of people inhabit the travel space, but do we have more in common than we first thought? Have we inadvertently become conformist whilst attempting to become the opposite?

01 Jul 2023New Zealand Announces Working Holiday Visa Upgrades!00:37:38

Wow! Adam thought this day would never come. New Zealand and the UK have announced improvements to their Working Holiday Visa schemes, including increasing the age limit from 30 to 35, extending the maximum period of stay, and increasing the length of time individuals can work. These upgrades will benefit travellers and expats from the UK and New Zealand, with more news on the horizon from the Australian and Canadian governments regarding their respective WHV schemes. Australia has also increased the age limit, in addition to announcing an improved scheme to be implemented in 2024.

(New Zealand will also re-establish an annual cap for the UK WHS to be set at 15,000 visas per year – higher than the volume of UK WHS visas previously granted)

Working Holiday Visas act as golden tickets within the travel community, allowing backpackers to work and travel in foreign countries with relative ease. Adam and Alun know a thing or two about these visas, having cashed a few in themselves!

Alun shares a hilarious story of his bohemian life in Adelaide, South Australia. Enduring three months of backbreaking and repetitive 'regional' work, Alun packed potatoes until the cows came home. Subscribe to our Patreon (link below) to hear the crazy plot twist!

This week's Hostel Common Room section involves a travel phenomenon: coincidence. Following your instinct, and travelling with an open heart and an open mind usually leads to good fortune, but some occurrences just cannot be explained. Adam regales us with a tale of his nightclub antics in Berlin, resulting in him nearly getting hit by a cyclist... three years later, on the other side of the world?! Coincidence or destiny? You decide!

17 Aug 2024Armed Escort to the Afghanistan Border!00:33:22

Surreal and excessive! This week we were escorted to the Pakistan/Afghanistan border by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police. Leaving Islamabad and heading west, we spent 3 days in Peshawar: a great city just 50kms from the Afghanistan border.

We tried our best to blend in and move around with some degree of freedom; however, we were informed by our hotel staff that armed security was essential. Travelling in a convoy towards the Khyber Pass and accompanied by a team of heavily armed policemen, we arrived at Jamrud Fort- built in 1836 by Hari Singh Nalwa, Commander-in-chief of the Sikh Khalsa Army, the army of the Sikh Empire. Keep a low profile and listen from a safe space!

20 Jul 2024Walking in the Footsteps of Buddha00:30:45

Alun’s been on a pilgrimage of sorts, following in the footsteps of Buddha himself.

Tune in to hear Alun’s tales of visiting three very important Buddhist sites- Bodh Gaya: Buddha’s place of enlightenment, Sarnath: where Buddha taught his first sermon, and Kushinagar: Buddha’s final resting place.

Stay tuned for the second half of the episode, as Alun shares an unfortunate event in which both him and his phone go swimming in some rather dirty waters!

17 Jun 2023Tipping Culture: Has the World Gone Crazy?00:45:16

TRIPOLOGY Podcast is your one-stop shop for travel guides, backpacking advice, and big tips!

Tipping culture is hot topic at the moment. Adam & Alun tackle the concept head-on, including cultural differences, travel faux pas, and advice for travellers who may be anxious about the tipping culture in other countries.

Adam shares the story of his terrifying motorcycle accident whilst riding through the Sa Pa mountains, Vietnam. Hunted by a mob of angry villagers and hidden away by a local family, Adam was able to escape unharmed and literally couldn't do enough to say thank you.

The boys also answer a question from a fellow romantic. Falling in love whilst travelling the world can lead to intense relationships, amplified emotions, pressure cooker environments, and serious sacrifice. Travel romance is something many travellers experience but are the relationships built to last? One thing we do know is that the TRIPOLOGY community is here to offer support.

Do you agree with the concept of tipping? Has North American tipping culture gone too far? 15 Feb 2025How to Cycle Japan & How NOT to Enter China!00:30:26

Adam's East Asia trip reaches its grand finale with an incredible 650km cycle ride around the Seto Inland Sea, including Japan's most famous cycle route: the Shimanami Kaido. Highlights include the historically important city of Hiroshima, eating the world's best beef in Kobe, and a drunken night in Marugame involving a lot of free wine and whisky!

It's not all fun and games, especially when it comes to immigration. In the second half of the episode, Adam describes a layover in Beijing to remember. When entering China, sometimes following all the rules isn't enough.

For a long time Alun has wanted to reach Antarctica, after spending a year on each of the world's six other continents. Choosing Ushuaia, Argentina, as his jumping off point, he spent a month knocking on every door in the ship yard.

26 Aug 2023What Is 'Begpacking' and Is It Acceptable?00:32:46

We're putting your moral compasses to the test this week!

The term 'Begpacking' is a portmanteau of the words 'beg' and 'backpacking', and refers to the unethical behaviour of certain backpackers who seek donations towards their travels from locals and tourists.

Often sitting by the side of the road in busy tourist districts, with complete disregard for local culture and community, these audacious and inconsiderate 'Begpackers' seem willing to stoop extremely low... but should we be so quick to judge?

29 Jun 2024Taxi Hell in the Himalayas!00:30:48

Taxi scams and dangerous mountain roads a plenty, in this hellish episode that covers a journey we don’t want to repeat in a hurry! Cab drivers falling asleep whilst listening to a live performance of TRIPOLOGY? How rude!

Travelling in a group has its perks, and one of those is splitting costs to help extend the ol’ travel budget. However, private vehicles and taxis aren’t always safe and stress-free, as we found out on our journey from Dehradun in Uttarakhand, to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.

Stay tuned for the second half of the episode, where Alun introduces a cheeky and potentially unhygienic edition of ‘Tripological Reasoning’ that we're sure will resonate with many of you!

Take a deep breath, equalize your ears, and grab a dive buddy! This week, TRIPOLOGY descends into the astonishing world of scuba diving.

A popular activity within the travel community, scuba diving opens the door into an environment unlike any other. Marine life, underwater landscapes, coral reefs, shipwrecks, and the ever-suggestive sea cucumber are all to be discovered under the sea.

Darling, it's better down where it's wetter...

Alun professes his love for slipping into a wetsuit and submerging himself, but things don't always go swimmingly, as we hear his terrifying near-death experience whilst in pursuit of the obscure and striking Ocean Sunfish.

Adam recounts a sailing trip in Indonesia where he witnessed a choreographed dance routine performed by two gigantic Manta Rays. Free-diving, with nothing but a pair of goggles, he's quickly reminded he doesn't possess gills. Not even the Harry Potter theme tune can save him!

Do you have an incredible diving story you'd like to share? Send us an email at tripologypodcast@gmail.com

If you think you might enjoy scuba diving, please take the plunge! There's every chance it could change your life!

It's turtlenecks and heads this week, as Alun gets caught short in the Brazilian rainforest! After feeling a 'rumble in the jungle', he makes a snap decision that leaves him 'at one with nature'. Even the most experienced traveller would never guess this plot twist!

Alun also imparts his travel wisdom, after almost making his biggest travel mistake to date. Backpacking through Brazil and arriving at a major crossroads, he leans on the advice of some friends and is rewarded by the universe.

18 Feb 2023Travelling in Japan vs Mexico00:35:40

Join Al & Adam for this rather unique and creative episode. For the first time, TRIPOLOGY takes to the road and enters its next phase: backpacking, in the very literal sense.

Al, broadcasting from Mexico, quizzes Adam on his escapades in Japan. Adam spills the soybeans on the transport system, paper and plastic wastage, and the crazy convenience store culture. Al does well to dodge death after battling illness and deadly insect bites - again?! Mayan marvels, great street food, and re-connecting with an old friend help to lift his spirits.

Being able to adapt and 'get creative' are skills essential for any trip. If you've had to think on your feet and swerve a curveball, we want to hear about it! Send us an email at tripologypodcast@gmail.com

11 Jan 2025The Ancient Mysteries of Turkey00:41:17

Reunited, once again, for an episode filled with ancient mysteries! Alun's in his element, reliving his travels in Turkey, in particular the neolithic archaeological site of Göbekli Tepe. Created between 9600 and 8200 BCE, along with neighbouring Karahan Tepe, Göbekli Tepe is one of the oldest permanent human settlements ever discovered, resulting in the megalithic structures being dubbed the "world's first temple".

Alun also explored the underground city of Derinkuyu, in the region of Cappadocia. This ancient multi-level labyrinth of tunnels and chambers once housed 20,000 people! Forget the hot air balloon rides and the acrophobia; suffer from claustrophobia instead!

Alun's last stop was the ancient Greek city of Ephesus, including the famous Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Alun recounts spending a full day meandering through the streets, marvelling at the well preserved city ruins.

Tune in for ancient mystery and wonder, in an episide that asks more questions than it answers. What was Göbekli Tepe used for? Did the Christians dig the tunnels of Derinkuyu? And just when was ancient Greece?!

03 Jun 2023When Seasonal Work Goes Horribly Wrong!00:41:33

Seasonal Work plays a huge role in the lives of many backpackers. Passionate about organic farming, sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and often volunteering to acquire knowledge and new skills, travellers use seasonal work as a way of earning money whilst experiencing the world.

However, it doesn’t always go smoothly!

In this episode, Adam shares an embarrassing experience he's tried hard to forget. In 2019, whilst living in Hong Kong, Adam was gifted a rare opportunity to work for a prestigious wine producer in Burgundy, France. Intending to learn as much as possible and prepared to work himself into the ground, his enthusiasm quickly turned into overindulgence. Unsophisticated, uncouth, unbelievable!

Alun & Adam also discuss a lovely email from a lovely listener. Maintaining relationships with family and friends whilst travelling is incredibly important and far from straightforward. Technology has made regular communication much easier over the past few decades, but it's often more complicated to spend quality time with loved ones. Tune in for tips and advice on how to stay in touch with people whilst on the road - We even hear the thoughts of Alun's lovely Mum!

13 Jan 2024Hiking the Himalayas: Interview w/ Emmie & Lucas00:32:53

The third and final part of our 'Hiking the Himalayas' series concludes with an interview with Emmie & Lucas. Alun completed the trek with Emmie & Lucas, forming the triumphant trekking trio, and they've now reunited in Kathmandu to debrief one another and discuss their experiences.

A very true, very special bond developed whilst on the road. We hear them reminisce about the physical and mental challenges, the crazy angles of a tea house, the questionable yet surprising uses for yak dung, and the ironic anti-climax of seeing the world's tallest mountain: Mount Everest.

28 Sep 2024Is Fairy Meadows Worth the Hype?00:36:26

Dangerous jeep rides, night trekking, and perhaps the shortest shorts in Pakistan! Fairy Meadows is a popular tourist destination for travellers in Pakistan but is it worth the hype?

25 Jan 2025North Korea: Trouble at the DMZ00:40:10

It's a little tense this week, as Adam describes life on the North Korean border. Popular as a tourist attraction, visiting the DMZ isn't as dangerous as it may sound, unless you have someone in your tour group who insists on taking photographs!

The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a heavily militarized area that runs between North and South Korea, dividing the peninsula in half. Established in 1953 as a result of the Korean Armistice agreement, the DMZ stretches 250 kilometres and is around 4 kilometres wide. The situation has flared up many times, with civilian and military casualties on both sides.

Adam also shares highlights of his first week in South Korea, including spending the night in Incheon airport, and eating live octopus! Over in the Patreon section, we hear how buying a bagel turned into the "least enjoyable shopping experience" of his life!

04 Feb 2023Group Travel vs Backpacking Solo00:35:24

Welcome back to another edition of TRIPOLOGY!

Art-deprived Alun and amicable Adam (easy for you to say!) tackle the age-old debate of Group Travel vs Backpacking Solo.

Discussing the pros and cons from every angle, and using real life experiences to support their arguments, we hear the reasons why you should consider your options carefully. Is solo travel for everyone? Are you ever really alone? Opportunities, options, and friendships are formed whilst out in the world on your own. Travelling in a group allows you to split the bill, but at what cost? Sharing special moments with loved ones is priceless.

This complicated conundrum is contemplated conscientiously... but which one is better? Come sit on the fence to find out!

We hope this episode is informative and relatable. If you have something to add or any questions regarding this topic, please send us an email at tripologypodcast@gmail.com

18 Nov 2023Volunteering in Africa: Is it Ethical?00:32:43

Voluntourism is big business. The concept behind western tourists wishing to make positive contributions to less fortunate communities is a noble one; however, the ramifications can result in doing more harm than good.

Highlights include the charming ancient ruins of Athens, a brilliant free walking tour of Milan, almost seeing Jesus Christ's death cloth, and trying to eat as much pizza as possible without arousing a dear friend's nut allergy!

Speaking of nuts, if ever there was a week to join our Patreon community, it's this one! Cultures collide, as Alun attempts to peel a pistachio with chopsticks!

City Walkers (Milan): https://www.citywalkers.eu/en/tours/milan-freetour-english/

A dangerous neighbourhood in Athens: Omonia Square, and for good measure, Milan's neighbourhoods to be wary of: Stazione Centrale, Corvetto, Quarto Oggiaro, San Siro and Rogoredo.

29 Mar 2025What Are The Odds?00:32:26

Have you ever played ‘What Are The Odds?’ It’s a game both loved and feared by backpackers the world over. When taken seriously, it can result in some embarrassing but hilarious stories! Alun’s broadcasting from the UK, having returned for a quick family visit, before setting off on yet another adventure. Adam’s back in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, after driving his beloved rental car all the way from Queenstown: 1600kms, 48 hours, one ferry, and nowhere near enough sleep!

21 Oct 2023Motorcycle Crash in Vietnam!00:33:17

Brace yourself! It's the backpacker's almost inevitable nightmare: Alun recounts the story of a dangerous accident he had whilst riding a motorcycle through Vietnam.

Purchasing a motorcycle without having ever ridden one was maybe Alun's first mistake but don't worry, it gets worse!

Travelling from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, and discovering the incredible country of Vietnam by motorcycle, is a trip we highly recommend - Just try to learn how to ride the motorcycle before setting off!

20 May 2023Take a Hike!00:43:43

Grab your snorkel, we're going hiking! It's one of the best things about travelling, isn't it? Whether you're camping in the wilderness, thru-hiking long distances, or simply rambling through the countryside, TRIPOLOGY has you covered, with what is undoubtedly the most comprehensive guide to hiking on the internet.

Trying their best to stay on track, Alun shares his heartfelt take on the team-building aspect of hiking, as well as his breathtaking experiences whilst trekking in Patagonia. Adam relives the most dangerous and challenging hike he's ever faced: Mount Rinjani, Lombok, Indonesia. A true test of physical and mental strength, climbing Mount Rinjani is both grueling and humbling, but nothing a pair of Crocs can't handle! Hiking is so much more than a physical activity. It's meditative, exploratory, rewarding, and also allows one to connect with nature. Did we mention it's free?!

07 Sep 2024Pakistan's Worst Bus to Pakistan's Worst Hotel!00:32:34

You get what you pay for! This week, we jumped aboard the NATCO bus service travelling from Mastuj to Gilgit, via the Shandur Pass and the world's highest polo ground. Breakdowns, landslides, and multiple flat tires ensured we arrived 8 hours later than scheduled.

Continuing the theme, we checked ourselves into what is almost certainly the worst hotel in Pakistan. Like a pair of Backpacking Bargain Hunters, the electricity shortages, insects, and strong smell of smoke couldn't prevent us snagging a deal!

07 Dec 2024Camel Safari Without Underwear!00:30:40

Ethics go out the window this week, as Adam's not only riding camels but he's doing it without underwear! Continuing his road trip around Rajasthan, Adam arrives in the 'Golden City' of Jaisalmer, where he embarked on a camel safari that both he and the camel will never forget.

We also hear of a treacherous journey involving some of the rudest hotel staff Adam's ever encountered. Stranded at midnight, in the middle of nowhere, and with the staff refusing to help, Adam had to think fast.

So, you've been excited for months about visiting a destination, reading travel blogs, watching YouTube videos, and spending hours staring at photos on Instagram, only to arrive at the destination to find it's crowded with hordes of tourists. "Hidden gem" sound familiar?

Adam shares his experience of exploring temples in Kyoto, Japan. Whilst Alun describes his visits to Machu Picchu, the Pyramids of Giza, and Petra in Jordan. Did these ancient wonders meet his expectations or did the reality leave him disappointed?

15 Jul 2023The North American Road Trip ft. The TRIPOLOGY Dog Delivery Service00:46:37

This week TRIPOLOGY Podcast was recorded in its 7th country: United States.

Join Adam & Alun as they relive their fond memories of a road trip through the stunning Rocky Mountains, Canada. Crossing the border from British Columbia into Alberta, they had been tasked with hand-delivering a new born puppy! Freezing temperatures of -32 degrees Celsius and 7 hours of driving through snowy, icy mountain passes ensured the trip was anything but straightforward.

Stay tuned for the second half of the episode, as we enter the Hostel Common Room. We discuss a heartfelt, thought-provoking email from a listener who is currently travelling around Southeast Asia. Their backpacking trip has resulted in mixed feelings towards long-term travel, particularly regarding sustained happiness whilst on the road, and the ol' travel community favourite: expectation vs reality. Will a mindset shift solve the problem or is it time for a change of scenery?

If you've ever wondered what it's like to hike the Himalayas, this is the series for you!

Adam & Alun connect once again, as Alun shares his daily account of hiking along the Three Passes Trek through the Himalayas in Nepal.

Using a series of live voice recordings, Alun was able to document each day trekking through the mountains. Expect stunning scenery, questionable fire fuel, and a high dose of altitude sickness!

The Three Passes Trek is located in the Everest Region (Sagarmatha National Park) and takes trekkers across three high passes: Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La.

It's party time! Alun turned 30 this week and we celebrated his birthday in style! Presented with a birthday gift live on air, Alun looks back on a decade of travel and offers insights into how it feels to be travelling at 30.

We also reflect on what's been an incredible two months in Mumbai. Mumbai will, for many reasons, always hold a special place in our hearts; a true turning point in the TRIPOLOGY story.

Recorded live from a hotel with a no-star rating, we're travelling through Gujurat and heading north to the mountains. Now is a great time to join the adventure!

19 Apr 2025Travelling Back in Time to Discover Antarctica00:31:09

All aboard the RRS Discovery! Alun's transported back in time as he's invited onto the legendary ship that set sail in 1901 to explore Antarctica!
The RRS Discovery was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship built in the United Kingdom, and its first mission was the highly successful 'British National Antarctic Expedition', carrying explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton. Now moored in Dundee, Scotland, tourists are welcomed aboard to experience what life would have been like more than 100 years ago. Would Adam & Alun have thrived in such conditions? Have we passed the age of discovery?

The second half promises to wet your appetite as Hostel Common Room returns! We answer a question from a listener regarding food choices whilst travelling. If food & drink is a focus of yours, be sure to tune in!

29 Apr 2023Wandering Earl: An Interview with Travel Expert Derek Baron00:53:35

This week, we welcome a guest into the TRIPOLOGY studio.

We have the pleasure of interviewing Derek Baron, founder of successful travel blog WanderingEarl.com.

In 1999, shortly after graduating university, Derek left his home in Boston, Massachusetts, with $1500 USD and the rough outline of a 3-month backpacking trip around Southeast Asia. More than 20 years later, Derek is still on that trip.

In 2009, Derek started his travel blog and it's now developed into a thriving tour company: Wandering Earl Tours

Derek's life as a digital nomad has allowed him to become 'location independent'. He has visited a staggering 130+ countries across 6 continents, worked on cruise ships, taught English, and supported various volunteering projects.

Tune in to hear Derek's fascinating insights and valuable advice, as we discuss travel lifestyles, business and culture, the impact of technology and social media, and the importance of focusing on human interactions and kindness. Derek also regales us with a nail-biting experience in Bangladesh, involving a "light kidnapping".

Sustaining a life on the road is absolutely possible, "You just need the word Hello".

Derek's proved the concept. Now, it's your turn!

Adam's fulfilled his boyhood dream of bike-packing in Asia but, true to form, he's bitten off more than he can chew. 'Fresh' from hospital, Adam shares stories of his cycling trip around Taiwan, including a spectacular crash, followed by an intimate moment with a car mechanic.

Tripping Point returns with a Taiwanese edition and the stakes are higher than ever. If Alun scores 4/5, Adam's agreed to fly to Scotland to be with him at Christmas. One thing's for certain: a sponsorship deal from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is out the window.

The Huandao, meaning 'around the island' in Chinese, is a legendary cycle route around Taiwan, and should be at the top of your list if you enjoy travelling by bicycle; although, many people also walk the route! If you have any questions about cycling in Taiwan, please send us a message at tripologypodcast@gmail.com

03 Aug 2024Tiger Hunting on the Bangladesh Border!00:31:37

Alun’s quest to see wild tigers continues as we head to Sundarbans mangrove forest in the Bay of Bengal. Rickshaws, taxis, trains and many boats took us to the largest mangrove forest on planet earth. Wildlife enthusiasts travel from all over the world to spot tigers here. Did we get lucky? Tune in to find out!

The Sundarbans, located in the south-west of Bangladesh and eastern India, is the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world; 60% of the property lies in Bangladesh and 40% in India. The site supports exceptional biodiversity in its terrestrial, aquatic and marine habitats, and is considered a core breeding area for a number of endangered species: the Royal Bengal Tiger, Ganges and Irawadi dolphins, estuarine crocodiles, and the critically endangered endemic river terrapin.

12 Apr 2025Spotting Wild Dolphins in Milford Sound!00:34:05

Adam's New Zealand adventure continues with stories from the South Island. Whilst cruising around Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park, Adam's boat is chased by a wild dolphin having the time of its life!

Adam also hikes through Abel Tasman National Park, where he's forced to speed-run 25kms of beautiful coastline or risk being stranded in the dark.

09 Nov 2024Is Azerbaijan Backpacker-Friendly?00:37:39

It's the first episode of a new era, as we part ways and the podcast goes remote, again! The recording was fraught with technical issues and poor wifi connections, hence the creative video work!

Alun's exploring Azerbaijan and discovering firsthand that not every country is backpacker-friendly. Whether it’s the lack of backpacking infrastructure for solo travellers, the limited and expensive transport options, or the encounters with creepy-crawlies, travelling Azerbaijan presents some challenges.

Alun shares the highlight of his trip: visiting Gobustan, where he viewed the famous petroglyphs and rock art; carvings which are an incredible 40,000 years old! He also tells of a nightmare taxi ride involving a collapsed bridge and an intense altercation with the taxi driver which resulted in Alun receiving a bottle to the head!

08 Apr 2024Dharavi: Inside India’s Largest Slum00:31:30

Initially, the idea of visiting the largest slum in India didn’t sit well with us, but after speaking with a number of backpackers who had, we were reassured that instead of being intrusive and voyeuristic, it was in fact an opportunity to educate ourselves.

Dharavi in Mumbai is a sprawling residential & commercial area covering more than 500 acres! Housing 1 million registered residents and a reported 1 million more who remain unregistered, Dharavi is a densely populated, compact labyrinth filled with wonderful communities and thriving businesses.

01 Jun 2024Valivade: India's Polish Refugee Camp00:32:57

We set off on a 48-hour mission to uncover Alun's family history. After catching a night bus 9 hours south of Mumbai, we had just one day to discover as much as we could about Alun's Polish Grandparents, who lived in Valivade during the 1940s. We struck gold before breakfast, managing to meet the local Governor, who happily escorted us around the village and nearby city of Kolhapur, ensuring the trip exceeded our wildest dreams!

The Polish refugee camp in Valivade was the largest camp for Polish refugees in India. From 1942-1948, around 5,000 Poles lived there, mainly women and children.

This week's special guest is Alun's loyal backpack 'Lucky'. Alun's heading to Brazil for a friend's wedding and, as 'Lucky' would have it, his departure coincides with us receiving an email from a listener enquiring about the contents of our backpacks.

We take the opportunity to rummage through Alun's backpack in fine detail, discussing which packs we use and why, the essential items we can't live without, and share our advice on which products we think you should consider.

08 Jul 2023Bear Encounter Whilst Hiking in British Columbia, Canada!00:42:00

After tempting fate in previous episodes, Adam describes his nail-biting encounter with a bear. Whilst hiking in Nelson, British Columbia, Adam came face to face with a bear cub. Knowing its mother would be close by, Adam frantically tried to remember all of the advice from the 'Take a Hike!' episode.

Alun's fresh from his trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. A short city break with an old friend helped dust off the ol' travel wings in preparation for Alun's upcoming adventure. Highlights included the mythological, geological phenomenon: Giant's Causeway. As well as the tragic irony of visiting the Titanic exhibit on the day the OceanGate submersible news was broadcast.

05 Aug 2023Alun Wins Popular British TV Quiz Show!00:42:52

In our most quizzical episode yet, we hear of Alun's audacious attempt to win the jackpot on the popular British TV quiz show Tipping Point.

Running low on money but desperately trying to leave the UK to start a life in Canada, Alun was willing to pull out all the stops to earn the funds necessary to continue the trip. Applying to be a contestant on a TV quiz show is both daring and unorthodox, but this man had a plan, and he was ready to execute that plan to perfection.

Stay tuned for the second half of the episode, as we introduce a brand new feature on the podcast... A little pop quiz of our own! Has Alun got what it takes to go the distance again? Good luck to those of you joining in at home!

26 Oct 2024Alun Suffers Deadly Wasp Attack!00:33:38

Fancy a surprise vacation? Click the Journee link: https://journee1.pro.typeform.com/to/ASLAjq#source=tripology

The ever-unsuspecting Alun was set upon by a swarm of deadly wasps! Suffering intense pain and completely blacking out, we managed to record this episode just hours after Alun coming round- his commitment to the podcast is unparalleled!

As the road trip around Oman continues, Alun’s concerned his driving isn’t being appreciated. Alun’s Miscellaneous Travel Item returns, involving Adam’s detailed review of Alun’s driving so far. And things get too close for comfort, as we encounter a late-night mystery beast. We’re almost certain it was an enormous wolf. Or a donkey. Probably a wolf, though. 04 Jan 2025Georgia Continued: Wine, Caves & Joseph Stalin00:35:04

Alun relives his two months spent in the increasingly popular Georgia. After visiting Sesikeli Winery and getting drunk the ancient way, he describes the staggering 8000 year-old winemaking techniques and gives Adam a run for his money!

Alun also explored the town of Gori, located in central Georgia. Infamous for being the birthplace of the locally celebrated Joseph Stalin, the experience was as strange as it was uncomfortable. Add Gori to your Dark Tourism bucket list!
