09 Sep 2020 | Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) | 00:31:25
Our most dedicated listeners may find this very podcast to be an infinite playlist of two men with undeniable sexual chemistry... so why not give them more of the same? Except we switch out our hosts for perhaps the more appealing Kat Dennings and Michael Cera in 2008's NICK & NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST. This particular mixtape has less emo, more Wu-Tang Clan, THE One Direction and a debate over the appropriate amount of support from Ari Graynor. 28 Oct 2020 | Comics Without the Capes and Cowls | 00:29:22
For Halloween we play dress up by dressing down comic book film adaptations. Wait. That sounds insulting. Maybe even sexual. None of that! Just two dorks talking about their own strangely paternal trilogy of comic books on the silver screen. Nothing remotely sexual about this. Just insulting. TO YOUR EARS. 19 Nov 2020 | Hearts Beat Loud (2018) | 00:28:31
The ever cantankerous persona of Ron Swanson is only somewhat to be found in the Nick Offerman starring HEARTS BEAT LOUD... sooooo we try our best to fill that void. But this film is so darn likable. Forgive us for this corny episode and then promptly go to hell for agreeing that it's corny. Like rate and review! This is TRILOGY IN THEORY. 08 Oct 2020 | Road to Perdition (2002) | 00:27:43
In this episode we discover that one host was THE adult in the room back in the summer of 2002; hanging out with the greats of Newman and Hanks. Meanwhile your other host couldn't get enough of some dork named Tobey and the usual comic book tights as seen in a little movie called SPIDER-MAN. This month... that host becomes a MAN. Not Spider-Man. That's for kids. STUPID kids. We are so mature here at Trilogy in Theory. Fans of TiT know this. 02 Sep 2020 | Juno (2007) | 00:36:33
2007 was a far gentler time when it came to disagreements. J.K. Simmons DID NOT throw a cymbal at your head for revealing your teen pregnancy. Ellen Page insulting your favorite band was not the most insulting thing in the world (or in that particularly awkward conversation, Jason Bateman). And the great Michael Cera could trust his heart with the full confidence that the greatest of all movie channels STARZ would provide ample evidence of amorous affection. This is our episode on JUNO. 26 Nov 2020 | The Everything Must Go Trilogy | 00:28:23
On this Thanksgiving we attempt to be thankful for all of the things in our lives. Right before we get rid of them. No, this isn't one of this creepy and extremely privileged YouTube minimalist videos from a wealthy twenty something who is tired of having so much stuff. This is about a man dealing with the trauma of destroyed Nintendo Switch cases and the trilogy of films that got him through it. This is just another month of TRILOGY IN THEORY. 26 Aug 2020 | Dreaming in Paris of Lives Not Lived | 00:33:16
We open with Hemingway and it's all downhill from there as we lament the lack of travel in 2020 and bemoan the inability for our three male leads in BEFORE SUNSET, INCEPTION and MIDNIGHT IN PARIS to ever achieve satisfaction. Which puts us closer to being in the same category as Leonardo DiCaprio and Ethan Hawke as we'll ever be. Okay, so maybe we settle for just being in Owen Wilson's company. We hope you've settled for being in our company as we dreamt of Paris this month and give a hint at what's to come next month with our TRILOGY IN THEORY. 22 Jul 2020 | Jojo Rabbit (2019) | 00:24:55
A scrappy Nazi youth and his even more precocious imaginary friend Hitler made for unfortunately timely movie watching in 2019 as we wrap up our selections for our rabbit trilogy with the title character JOJO RABBIT. Thankfully there is a little dancing and a little Sam Rockwell (and your favorite podcast hosts!) to make it somewhat palatable. 23 Sep 2020 | The Romantic Influence of Michael Cera | 00:35:13
What more can we say about this century's sexiest leading man in cinema? Our listeners would probably say PLEASE GOD NO MORE and to that we say... calm down, we have to take this opportunity to revisit a "physical journey" with Michael Cera. And that's just the disturbing cold open! What will the rest of the episode reveal about our deviant hosts? Only the bold listeners of TRILOGY IN THEORY will know.
05 Nov 2020 | Ghost World (2001) | 00:30:58
Listen with great intrigue as two middle-aged men try to understand the whims of teenage girls but do not despair... for these characters come from a comic book! And thus your hosts have a SLIM chance of understanding the motivations of Enid and Rebecca in GHOST WORLD. We are old and we are tired... but we haven't boarded that bus out of town just yet. 05 Aug 2020 | Before Sunset (2004) | 00:29:50
The dream of TRILOGY IN THEORY started with a conversation on THE BEFORE TRILOGY... which means of course that one host will question the need of Richard Linklater to the whole venture while the other host reveals his true passion for these characters comes back to a rather attractive high school classmate. A finer pair of serious-minded cinephiles you will not find as we discuss BEFORE SUNSET for our second TRILOGY IN THEORY! 14 Oct 2020 | American Splendor (2003) | 00:38:57

Okay maybe that last one was a bit of coal but I believe one of the finest actors of his generation will get over it. 19 Aug 2020 | Midnight in Paris (2011) | 00:28:42
Though we may never fit into the Parisian lifestyle, at least in Woody Allen's MIDNIGHT IN PARIS we find a kindred spirit in Owen Wilson's bumbling DORK. Granted a bumbling dork who is engaged to Rachel McAdams and begins an affair across time with Marion Cotillard. But basically the same guy as your favorite hosts on TRILOGY IN THEORY! 01 Oct 2020 | The B-Sides (Fatal Attraction, Amélie, Paper Heart) | 00:51:27
When one thinks of rabbits in film... the first thought that comes to one's sick mind is FATAL ATTRACTION. When one thinks of dreaming in Paris of lives not lived... one judges the scheming of a duplicitous young lady named AMELIE. And finally when one thinks of Michael Cera you could go with the three prior films we talked about on this very podcast. Or maybe even SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD. But, no... here you will find PAPER HEART. These films all have one thing in common. They were losers in winning a coveted slot on our previous trilogies in theory. But today... they are on TRILOGY IN THEORY. Enjoy and thank you for being with us for the first three months of this podcast! 03 Dec 2020 | Batman Returns (1992) | 00:29:13
Most people say, it's just not Christmas without Christopher Walken as a scheming businessman with great hair. And if you are most people you also listen to TRILOGY IN THEORY. Unless it's a month on Michael Cera, you jerks. But no Michael Cera this month! For it's December which means a podcast is obligated to do a Christmas theme. Every week. This week it's BATMAN RETURNS. And one host is not yet in the spirit. For he hates penguins. And cats. But he likes Batman. Which makes him all the more put out by what Tim Burton is laying down. 12 Dec 2020 | L.A. Confidential (1997) | 00:33:48
All we want for Christmas is a lovely lady who looks like Veronica Lake. And not, we can not stress this enough, a gift that resembles in ANY WAY one Kevin Spacey. But he's still pretty good in the Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland film adaptation of James Ellroy's L.A. CONFIDENTIAL. So that means our listeners will have to settle for Guy Pearce. 12 Aug 2020 | Inception (2010) | 00:34:40
We continue our podcast tour of Paris (which is to say, not really) with great philosophical debate over the nature of dreams (also, not really) as one host finds Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION strangely intimate and the other is four levels deep into the process of filmmaking. By the end of it, no conclusions can be drawn other than we sound like two guys who have no business being in Paris. Or your ears. But here we are! 15 Jul 2020 | Donnie Darko (2001) | 00:31:33
In which you find your hosts befuddled by the youth of both the 80s setting of Richard Kelly's DONNIE DARKO... but also by themselves in 2001 when this film was originally released. One host wonders if he missed out on the fun for this cult classic while the other doesn't feel hip for being there... just really, really old. 25 Dec 2020 | A New Identity for Christmas | 00:32:51
On this special Christmas Day episode we give our listeners those new identities that they probably didn't even know they wanted. HOWEVER for those that listened closely who could deny putting on the catsuit and becoming Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman in BATMAN RETURNS? Or perhaps a dead ringer for Veronica Lake like Kim Basinger in L.A. CONFIDENTIAL? And Leonardo DiCaprio bedding any number of young starlets as... well, Leonardo DiCaprio in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN? Doesn't this already sound better than Christmas 2020? TRILOGY IN THEORY works best when facing such weak competition. Happy holidays! 16 Sep 2020 | Youth in Revolt (2009) | 00:27:41
It's time to be bad, dear listeners. And there's no greater bad boy in American cinema than François Dillinger as played by the actor that made all parents concerned for the youth at the end of aughts. That's right. Double The Cera in this episode on YOUTH IN REVOLT. If that wasn't panty dropping enough, you also have Mike and Web. And they're pretty good. Not great. But pretty good. 12 Nov 2020 | Everything Must Go (2010) | 00:25:37
Who knew that a mostly ignored Will Ferrell dramedy from 2010 would unite your two favorite podcast hosts even further in their bromance? Not the filmmakers of EVERYTHING MUST GO but I'm sure they will take this as praise. In fact they would probably gladly accept a podcast (even this one) a decade later trying to share the surprising amount of joy that this film contains. As long as that joy remains in earbuds and not in the front lawn. Because your hosts have a lot of Criterions. And they have learned no lessons from this month's TRILOGY IN THEORY! 20 Jun 2023 | Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) | 00:32:28
The Third Part in our On the Road with Ladies of Vengeance trilogy. You can't go wrong with Charlize Theron driving your movie. Unfortunately the prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD does not take the above advice and while we wouldn't dare to advise the great George Miller on his filmmaking sequel choices (BABE: PIG IN THE CITY good and HAPPY FEET TWO not so much) we do hope that Nicholas Hoult can convey his great performance as a likable bald villain into playing Lex Luthor. And there's your one reference to comic book movies that ALL pale in comparison to an action movie that will referenced and spoke of with great reverence decades from now. And now I will retire from writing these show notes to go watch SWEET NOVEMBER or THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. Because I remember Charlize. And not much else. Good day! 13 Oct 2022 | Scream 3 (2000) | 00:34:33
Jay and Silent Bob learned how to overstay their welcome from the SCREAM franchise. This seems like an appropriate lesson for TRILOGY IN THEORY as our little podcast just hit 100 episodes. Spoiler alert: we don't plan on stopping anytime soon because we have yet to make any money off of this crap. Unlike the SCREAM franchise which still is held in high regards by your hosts... though maybe not this entry. At least there is Parker Posey playing the best Courtney Cox in the entire series. AT LEAST WE HAVE THAT. And 100 episodes. You're welcome. Support what we do with bonus content and early episodes on Patreon including an excuse for us to discuss the absolute classic (?) The First Part in our Obsession Behind the Wheel TrilogyWe tackle one of the Mt. Rushmore of college dorm room poster movies by throwing a book at those dumb kids for our episode on TAXI DRIVER. Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino to be precise as this is a FULL episode of what we've been covering all year long on our Patreon page. So... welcome all you cheapskates! But also please keep subscribing. Please. Is Travis Bickle an antihero like Wolverine (#TheMarvels) or just a big old dork? 22 Sep 2022 | The Descendants (2011) | 00:40:13
George Clooney makes a flip-flops sprint of panic iconic.Among his other accomplishments. Such as losing a lover to one Matthew Lillard. Alexander Payne continues to bring darkly comic tragedies to life in his follow-up to SIDEWAYS and in doing so he may have peaked with one host. But not before said host hated THE DESCENDANTS initially. It's an episode of wild emotional swings and Robert Forster punching children. A new TRILOGY IN THEORY classic! 13 Jan 2021 | Sideways (2004)
Two Guys Who Love SIDEWAYS But Not WineNo expertise to be had on this episode for Alexander Payne's SIDEWAYS. Oh sure, both your hosts have revisited this film many times. One of them fondly remembers experiencing its charms while eating a frozen pizza. So it shouldn't surprise any of you that neither man on this podcast is a wine snob. Or even drinks the stuff. Though I assure you that we do drink. Probably not as much as we should the way things have been going. ANYWAY the movie is great and Virginia Madsen delivers an ALL TIMER of a speech and just thinking of the shenanigans that Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church get into makes the poor bastard typing out these show notes want to watch it all over again. 11 May 2023 | Thelma & Louise (1991) | 00:32:44
To tell the story of female empowerment we must turn to Sir Ridley Scott......and of course the talents of Susan Sarandon, TRILOGY IN THEORY favorite Geena Davis and most importantly screenwriter Callie Khouri. And while one host fails miserably at his attempt at a mini book club by starting (but not finishing) OFF THE CLIFF by Becky Aikman... he did agree with the anecdote of not cheering on the screen death of the wonderfully tall Brigitte Nielsen in BEVERLY HILLS COP 2. That's neither here nor there but support women! And we intend to do so this month as we hit the road with leading ladies of action and leave Shooter McGavin behind! One host gets his way to take this podcast direct-to-video......and then keeps apologizing for it. Is it because he does not enjoy our selection of JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER? No. But he does admit that his reasoning is he bought a new toy to sit on his shelf and so here we are as we kick off a team-up trilogy with Darywn Cooke's all-hands-on-deck look at the DC Universe and the best comic book adaptation. That also happens to be a cartoon. That went straight to video. We'll never do this again. Maybe. Enjoy! In which one host caters to the other who really, really loves his funny books. But also... we are pandering for listeners with the only new release around. Thankfully (?) director Matt Reeves is making the media rounds pulling from superior works such as SEVEN and ZODIAC. Alas, there is no David Fincher behind the camera but there is Colin Farrell in a lot of makeup hiding his pretty face. 07 Jan 2021 | The Truman Show (1998) | 00:33:58
The Truman Show is depressing.Thank the maker for Jim Carrey though! As we discuss on this episode it takes a light touch to navigate the murky ethical waters of THE TRUMAN SHOW. Thankfully Peter Weir cast a comedian for this part written by Andrew Niccol and what results is a very entertaining film that the Academy could safely ignore. Because it was entertaining! On this episode your hosts about how it could have all gone wrong and that includes placing themselves in the role of Truman resulting in a show that no one would watch. Which is why we podcast. One host sees this as a seminal work in his moviegoing journey and the other feels like his film travels must have ended in failure to get to this point. No, not making CITIZEN KANE but instead being married to his co-star in THE LADY FROM SHANGAI, the great Rita Hayworth. Obviously. To kick off our trilogy on protagonists out kicking their coverage in like we look at another troubled Welles production which leads into another obvious fact... that he was the Zack Snyder of his time. 27 Apr 2022 | The Station Agent (2003) | 00:29:12
A film so good that two DVD copies are needed just in case of divorce. We continue the least sexy threesome trilogy by going with the quiet, contemplative and platonic Tom McCarthy film THE STATION AGENT. Peter Dinklage and Patricia Clarkson don't contribute much to Bobby Cannavale's one man show of dialogue... which would normally set off two guys whose friendship is based on talking at great length BUT NO MATTER! This film is CHARMING and more importantly is the classic Mr. McCarthy wishes SPOTLIGHT could be! That's the closest thing to a hot take you will find on a podcast on THE STATION AGENT. The First Part in our Liam Neeson is a Short-Term Mentor TrilogyHow did one podcaster spend his May the Fourth? By running out on his sleeping family for a late night twenty-fifth anniversary screening of the George Lucas opus STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE. He then spent a week questioning his commitment to cinema and this podcast and pondering this question: if this podcast sticks around for two decades will people come around to our way of thinking or do we need to be bought out by Disney first to gain that wistful afterglow? The Third Part in our Time Traveling with Dads TrilogyGiven the box-office reception to THE FLASH perhaps it's appropriate that your hosts found a theme of failure to be the most fulfilling thing about this latest superhero comic book adaptation and we hope the legacy here is that it signals an end. A sweet merciful end to the capes and funny books. But until then we try to find the good in a genre of movies that gets far too much coverage. Thankfully if Renner at his best is still not your cup of tea we have Blake Lively (at her worst... which is still really nice) and Rebecca Ferguson continuing her cinematic journey of being the straight arrow surrounded by shenanigans. 01 May 2021 | Directors Repeating Themselves | 00:38:51
Never before have you heard anyone repeat themselves on a podcast. Right? We never promised to break new ground on TRILOGY IN THEORY... which means we are very comfortable with a theme on directors repeating prior works in their filmography with a trilogy of CLERKS 2, DRAG ME TO HELL and BOYHOOD. Kevin Smith, Sam Raimi and Richard Linklater had no fear of proper critics taking them to task for running out of ideas... but it's safe to say they didn't expect this podcast to hold them accountable. But today is that day. The lack of creativity ends now, filmmakers. Leave that where it belongs. On movie podcasts. Patricia Clarkson becomes the official face of TiT......but Stanley Tucci isn't far behind. This duo of perhaps the greatest onscreen parents in EASY A allows two old men to discuss the sexual politics in a high school setting... and now that I'm looking at that sentence I should probably make clear that these show notes are a collaborative effort between hosts. Mike has very little oversight on this show. What we do have is a charming film announcing Emma Stone as a movie star and a continued defense of Lisa Kudrow. Kind of. Enjoy! 24 Feb 2021 | The Love of Movies Brought to Life | 00:29:28
In which we conclude that GET SHORTY is the end of cinema.Woody Allen is a controversial figure in film... but also has had a professional life of much critical acclaim. Quentin Tarantino may have a bit of an ego in that massive head of his. And with good reason! He also has lived the life of a critical darling since arriving on the scene with RESERVOIR DOGS. So when you have a trilogy on a love of movies brought to life that includes Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS there is only one conclusion you can make. That Barry Sonnenfeld's GET SHORTY is the only film worth discussing. This is the end of Trilogy in Theory. Good night. 01 Sep 2023 | The Village (2004) | 00:26:22
The First Part in our Building a Better Monster TrilogyWe welcome M. Night Shyamalan's work to the TiT club with the film where it all started to go wrong for "The Next Spielberg." But you know what (show notes author's note here that nothing subtle ever followed a sentence that starts with YOU KNOW WHAT) we actually like this movie. Just go ahead and put one giant SPOILER ALERT for this episode as we discuss the dashed hopes of Ain't It Cool News posters and the parenting skills of William Hurt. But it's lovely, the romance is lovely, the cinematography is lovely and Adrien Brody is... well, it's better than THE LADY IN THE WATER! Which we promise is not coming to the podcast soon. But it will at some later date. Enjoy the love story in LARPing! We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read! The Third Part in our Dealing with the Devil in 1997 TrilogyOne host talks about what a GREAT ASS Connie Neilsen has and how Keanu Reeves has his head... ALL THE WAY UP IT. Or something to that effect. The other host presents a childhood memory of walking in on his parents watching THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE and we wrap up our dealings with the underworld by debating the merits of bringing about the antichrist or being forced to watch SPAWN again. 16 Sep 2022 | The Majestic (2001) | 00:27:35
Jim Carrey gets no respect......and Frank Darabont is told to get back to his Stephen King books as one host comes out swinging. This instinct for cruelty inspires the host with a heart to also turn to the dark side in what may be the most contentious (and yet joyful) conversation on THE MAJESTIC. For that matter it may be the only conversation that's currently taking place about THE MAJESTIC in 2022. So we mention THE BATMAN in a futile effort to draw the listener in as two podcasts hosts enter... and both presumably come back as we finish out our Paradise trilogy on the very next episode! Answer the Call? The Female Ghostbusters? We got all the clickable comments. Two men who are decidedly not beholden to the original GHOSTBUSTERS film take on THE hot button issue of 2016... Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS. Notice how we give all the credit to a man there? Does that help? DOES IT? Unfortunately it doesn't. As much as we want to root for Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig's cosplay this just ends up being the saddest episode ever. We mention STRANGER THINGS a few times... does that help? Thank god we have a podcast so we can work through those issues as well as assigning blame to this Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet starring classic... for POSSIBLY starting the manic pixie dream girl craze of the mid-2000s. We start with funny books, hate on true stories and in the end save all the compliments for ourselves. It's the ultimate team-up as your two hosts take on the likes of great artist such as Darwyn Cooke, Quentin Tarantino and then we throw in Guy Ritchie because even we make mistakes! But this matters not as we can rewrite our own reality with a historical fiction trilogy where Martian Manhunter, the man who played Superman and Brad Pitt is just around the corner to save the day in (take notes here, because we have three prior episodes that could use the downloads)

Though it may be a throwback to popcorn dramas aimed at adults (and not children's movies marketed towards adults who won't grow up) we still must cope with the nostalgia factor that is anything set in the 80s or 90s. We hope to take your mind off that by INSTEAD imagining the first date and first kiss from one of your hosts as he cites this very movie as being a go-to in his playbook of courtship! And while spending America's birthday with Jenna Elfman and Richard Jenkins doesn't sound particularly sexy (though delightful!) that's where the sex positivity of Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake come on. If you have a buck instead of a book... we read so you don't have to.We resume our reading of Quentin Tarantino's book of essays and this time it's the shortest chapter on Peter Bogdanovich's blissfully short DAISY MILLER. In keeping with the brevity of both the book and film to be discussed we have a brief chat providing a modest amount of sound and very little meaning. Will MOONLIGHTING vanquish polite society? Sure. Episode NotesWell... we made it to a new year. And with that in mind we figured 2020 deserved no celebration of joy but instead a trilogy of loss. So board this episode with us as we decidedly are not in the mood for SNOWPIERCER's shenanigans of violence, the privileged gaining time travel powers in ABOUT TIME and/or Rooney Mara being made to feel bad about falling in love. Yes, dear listeners... it is probably time that we retreat back to yet another Tarantino film on this feed. However while we're here we might as well try and discuss the classic bowel movement aid of a film that is RASHOMON. At least three times! This is a movie podcast on trilogies after all. The Second Part in our On the Road with Ladies of Vengeance trilogy. On the road with a backtracking Quentin Tarantino...for he apologized for his half of the failed GRINDHOUSE double feature BUT WE DON'T. After suffering through an hour of PLANET TERROR we loved nothing more than taking a ride with Zoë Bell (as The Great Zoë Bell, of course) and the second group of our vengeful ladies. This time their eyes are set on the villainous Stuntman Mike as played by Kurt Russell but we look more to acclaimed filmmakers dealing with failure and how that quest for a perfect filmography limits the conversation on experimentation.
