11 Oct 2015It's Been A Long Road...01:01:35

We've spent a lot of time talking about some of the other Star Trek television series, and we decided it was finally time to give the most recent one some love!

It's hard to believe that Star Trek: Enterprise went off the air just over ten years ago, isn't it? In this week's episode, we'll talk about a variety of topics regarding the last Trek show, including:

  • Did we like the premise and characters?
  • Was the Temporal Cold War a good idea?
  • Did the Xindi arc kill the series?

In addition, we'll also talk about Dan's favorite episodes--the Mirror Universe two-parter, of course! There's a lot that happened in "In a Mirror, Darkly," and we'll talk about what worked for us in that story and what didn't.

Then, Dan seizes control of the show once again and subjects Bill to the second-ever edition of GEEK THE STUMP!  Can Bill improve upon his disastrous showing in the last outing? Will he utterly embarrass himself like he did last time?

It's a fun and engaging episode of the Trek Geeks Podcast and we hope you'll join us!

20 Oct 2022Picard Season 2 Recap01:38:41

This week, Bill and Dan take a look at the second (and penultimate) season of Star Trek: Picard!

Forced into an alternate timeline by the return of Q, Picard and crew must travel back to the 21st Century to protect an ancestor and protect the future that they know. Oh, and there's the Borg Queen, so you know some serious *BLEEP* is going to happen there.

It was a season that had a lot going on, and we'll try to make sense of it all--and we'll tell you how we'd rate it, and the answers might surprise you!

Plus, Lew from FanSets stops by for an extended conversation about their new pin lines and drops an exclusive announcement on their special 2022 Holiday Pin (pending licensing approval)!

And stick around after the closing theme for the longest after-show conversation ever with a special cameo by Bill's wife, Kelly--all in this week's episode of The Flagship!

04 Nov 2020The Ship01:14:42

While on a survey mission in the Gamma Quadrant to establish a potential mining colony, Sisko and company come across a Jem'Hadar transport ship that has crash landed. This could be the most significant intelligence find for Starfleet in recent memory--but it's not that easy.

The Dominion want the ship back and it's the only thing keeping our crew safe. Tensions and stakes are incredibly high in "The Ship" from Season 5 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and this week we dive in on this incredible episode!

13 Oct 2022Defending Spock's Brain01:19:26

Ask a lot of long-time fans of the original Star Trek what the worst episode of the series is and, odds are, you'll get a response like this: "UGH....Spock's Brain!"

This much-maligned season 3 premiere of TOS has been beaten up for decades and, this week, Bill and Dan stand up in defense of this installment. Find out why this is an episode they love and why they think you need to watch it again.

So, strap on that Teacher helmet and learn a whole bunch of reasons to fall in love with this very campy yet high-concept episode of Star Trek this week on The Flagship!

22 Mar 2016Paul Lang & Tommy Kraft01:15:05

It is amazing that Star Trek: Horizon has been viewed on YouTube over 500,000 times since its debut less than four weeks ago!  What is even more amazing is that Captain Harrison Hawke himself, Paul Lang and Horizon mastermind, Tommy Kraft both join us on this week's podcast for another great Horizon discussion.

It is truly amazing to Bill and Dan that this film has such amazing "Hollywood" quality knowing that 95% of the film was "green-screened." Paul discusses what is was like to have the Captain's Chair be the ONLY physical piece of the bridge, what it was like to do walking scenes--literally using a treadmill--as well as many other interesting filming tidbits for this online phenomenon.

Later in the show, when Tommy joins us, we get an idea of why he chose the Enterprise time frame for this epic story, and what it was like trying to pull together all the cast to get filming during a cold Michigan winter. Hearing from the man himself on his vision and idea for this story is something you do not want to miss.

21 Jul 2021Meteorologist Katie Teaches Weather to Two Idiots01:32:31

What happens when a Force of Nature tries to teach weather to two Natural Disasters? Well, wonder no more!

This week, Bill and Dan are joined by Meteorologist Katie Nickolaou from CBS 14 in Sioux City, Iowa to talk about her fandom, the extreme weather we've been experiencing across the country, Star Trek, and...PLINKO?! Yep. That's right. Plinko!

Plus, more on "How to Vegas," with Mr. Convention himself--Ron Wrobel!

Less than three weeks to go until the 55 Year Mission in Vegas, so download this episode and get ready!

21 Jul 2023The SAG Strike & STLV01:06:36

Bill & Dan preempt their discussion on Reg Barclay this week to tackle the news regarding the strike called by SAG-AFTRA and its members. With STLV starting in less than two weeks, it's important to know what is allowed for Union members and what isn't.

Plus, they'll discuss the bad info that's out there and why fans can't be "scabs," and provide an important update regarding FanGeeks Party 2023!

So, sit back, breathe easy, and get ready to pack your suitcase for Las Vegas with the Trek Geeks!

10 Jul 2015Suzie Plakson01:03:58

She's made only five appearances across various incarnations of Star Trek, but the characters she has portrayed have left an indelible impact on fans. A Vulcan...a half Klingon...a Q...an Andorian...we're speaking, of course, about our guest on this week's episode of the Trek Geeks Podcast--the amazing Suzie Plakson!

Suzie chats with Dan and Bill on her appearances in Star Trek, her emceeing the closing ceremonies of Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas, her recurring role on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, and her book "The Return of King Lillian!"

Plus, find out how you can get a free download of Suzie's audiobook of "The Return of King Lillian," in which she performs all of the characters!

Suzie has also shared a couple of special photos from her personal collection. They are behind the scenes of her first appearance in Trek, in costume for TNG's "The Schizoid Man" in November of 1988! See them at TrekGeeks.com!

22 May 2018Star Trek (2009)01:03:22

Few decisions in the Star Trek universe were more controversial than the announcement that there would be a new cast for movies featuring Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the cast of Star Trek. This week, we'll look at that first film in what has become known as The Kelvin Timeline!

Directed by JJ Abrams, this movie went on to become a global success, bringing a new generation of fans into the Star Trek universe.

We'll discuss our reactions to the various announcements for this film--including the casting of the legendary Leonard Nimoy himself. We'll also look at the story and which elements we liked, as well as what things we might have liked to have seen changed.

FIVE YEAR MISSION
We can’t possibly thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough. We are truly grateful to them for allowing us to use their music for every episode of Trek Geeks. You really should check them out–they’re writing and recording one original song for each episode of the classic Star Trek series from the 1960’s.

08 Aug 2015Geeks in Vegas, Part II00:15:29

NOW we understand what the phrase means! Sure, it's a dry heat, but so is a kiln, honestly. It's a good thing we spent plenty of time basking in the air conditioning at the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas!

Dan and Bill recap their second full day of the KHAAANN--they extol the virtues of Hash House a Go Go and talk about their first hand experience playing Star Trek Timelines! To be honest, the awesome folks at Disruptor Beam practically had to pry the iPads out of our hands after we were done test driving the game---but you can find out more about that in today's episode!

Plus, hear about the screening of "The White Iris" which was presented by our friends at TrekMovie.com! (Did you know how hard it is to get a cab in Vegas anywhere other than a hotel? Yep. We found out! LOL)

Join us for Episode 25 of the Trek Geeks Podcast!

07 Oct 2021All Our Yesterdays01:15:42

The Enterprise arrives at the planet Sarpeidon which is about to be destroyed by a supernova. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down to investigate and are trapped in a planet's distant past--where Kirk is accused of being a witch and Spock finds love (or something) with an exiled woman.

We'll discuss why we love this episode despite its obvious quirks and plot holes. Where does Spock think he's going to get seeds? Why doesn't McCoy regress? And what the hell happens to that cart once it goes through the Atavachron portal, anyway?

Join Bill & Dan for All Our Yesterdays, this week on The Flagship!

03 Sep 2019Trekonderoga01:19:58

We had the incredible good fortune to attend this year's Trekonderoga convention in Ticonderoga, New York--home of the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour!

Featuring Star Trek luminaries like Terry Farrell, Robin Curtis, Ethan Peck, JG Hertzler, and David Frankham, Trekonderoga had a fantastic track of Star Trek content.

At the heart of it, the amazing recreation of the sets from Star Trek--lovingly and meticulously recreated by James Cawley. It was an immersive experience that made you feel like you were really there.

We'll discuss our weekend at this intimate convention and why we'll be back next year! Plus, details about our conversations with Ethan Peck, and details on our standing room only panel!

Plus, get your exclusive FanSets discount code and the news from TrekNews.net on the Flagship of the Trek Geeks Podcast Network!

22 Jul 2016Star Trek Beyond Press Event01:17:34

Last week, Paramount held a screening of Star Trek Beyond for the media and hosted a press event the following day.

TrekNews.net was there, and thanks to Laura Sirikul, we have the audio!

You'll hear Scott Mantz from Access Hollywood moderate two panels: one with the cast of Star Trek Beyond featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and others, and one with the production team including producer J.J. Abrams, director Justin Lin, as well as writers Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.

It goes without saying that this audio contains spoilers of some nature, so if you haven't seen Star Trek Beyond yet, GO NOW! It opens today!

06 Nov 2015Star Trek - The Next Chapter01:04:06

Ten long years.  That's how long it's been since we've been able to watch new episodes of Star Trek. This week, CBS made an announcement that shook fandom to its very core:

We're getting a brand new Star Trek series in January of 2017!

Bill and Dan will take a look at the announcement made by CBS on November 2, 2015 which gave details on how the new series would be broadcast: a national premiere on the CBS Television Network with all episodes after that available on their streaming platform, CBS All Access. They'll discuss what we know from the announcement, what we don't know, and what we might be able to expect from a brand new Star Trek!

In addition, they'll talk about the reaction among fans on social media, and how there have been some very loud, negative voices.

Plus, voice mails and a listener question, all in this week's brand new episode of Trek Geeks - A Star Trek Podcast, "Star Trek - The Next Chapter!"

...and, by the way...did we mention WE'RE GETTING A NEW STAR TREK SERIES??!?!??!?!?!?!?

(CORRECTION: In the podcast episode, Bill mentions that the first month is free on All Access when, in fact, the first week is free when you subscribe to the service.)

11 Oct 2016Insurrection01:20:44

The year was 1998. Dan and Bill were working in telephone support jobs supporting stock trading software and 56k dial-up modems ruled the day.

One day at work, they got the bright idea to download the brand-new trailer for the third movie featuring the cast of The Next Generation--Star Trek: Insurrection! It took hours for the trailer to download and these two future Geeks looked forward to December.

Then they saw the movie.

The follow-up to First Contact didn't exactly overwhelm. It's been a long time since they've watched Insurrection, but the Trek Geeks will take a long look at this often maligned movie--and maybe even explain why it's really not as bad as people make it out to be.

In addition to elements of the movie that they liked (and didn't), they'll answer the central question that this movie raises: would it have been better served as an episode of NextGen?

It's a skin-stretchingly good time in Episode 79 of Trek Geeks--beam aboard, won't you?

01 Jan 2025Our Man Bashir: 007 Reasons to Love It01:39:41

This week on Trek Geeks, Bill & Dan are donning their tuxedos (metaphorically, of course) and ordering their martinis "shaken, not stirred" as they dive into the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine classic, Our Man Bashir! Join us for a lively discussion of this holosuite caper that combines Star Trek's charm with a healthy dose of spy genre flair.

But wait—there's more! The guys simply can't help themselves, so prepare for an avalanche of references to James Bond, Austin Powers, Our Man Flint, and even Matt Helm. From Sean Connery's suave moves to Mike Myers' groovy antics, nothing is off-limits as they connect the dots between 1960s spy kitsch and the future of Starfleet.

You'll laugh, you'll groan (at Dan, mostly), and you might even be inspired to watch a Bond flick or two after this episode. Is this their most over-the-top discussion yet? Possibly. Is it a blast? Absolutely. Don't miss it!

Grab your gadgets, geeks—this mission is about to self-destruct in 3… 2… 1…

...I think we all know the answer to that one. ;)

25 Nov 2020Time Squared01:17:05

This week, Bill & Dan look at the second season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "Time Squared!"

This episode has long been one of Bill's favorites, and even Future Bill from six hours from now, too. It's one of the Season 2 standouts--even for a bottle show--and it shows why Patrick Stewart was at the top of the Call Sheet.

It's an episode that Dan initially said to skip in the Season 2 See It or Skip It--Find out why we he's changed his vote on #TheFlagship!

This week, Dan puts Bill's Star Trek knowledge is to the test in a truly epic round of Geek the Stump!

Five tough trivia questions. (Well, more like tough for "Teen Jeopardy.")

One multi-part bonus. (Weeeellll...we'll see about that.)

Bill can’t use any reference materials of any kind–he has to rely on the knowledge in his tiny pea brain to answer the questions posed to him!

Will he be victorious?!  I think we all know the answer to that but, still...find out on this week’s episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

15 Sep 202256 Year Mission Recap01:11:27

This week, Bill & Dan review their first Vegas convention in over three years as they recap the goings on at the 56 Year Mission Convention which took place a couple of weeks ago.

What went right, what went wrong, and what was up with that live music at the FanGeeks Party, anyway? They'll talk about it all and how they hope next year's return to the Rio All Suites Hotel brings back some qualities this year's show was apparently lacking.

All things considered, we still want to thank Creation Entertainment for the great show they put on. As life gets closer to normal in some ways, it's good to be able to come together with our Trek Family.

26 Aug 2021THE BEST OF TREK GEEKS: Nana Visitor00:49:27

Originally Published: April 10, 2015

This week, Bill is having his wisdom teeth out so, in lieu of a brand new episode, we're sharing one of our favorite early conversations on Trek Geeks!

In 2015, we were insanely lucky to have Nana Visitor from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on the podcast to discuss creating the Kira character, women and the Star Trek Universe, how DS9 has held up over time, how a new generation of fans is discovering the series, and even a little Friday the 13th talk!

We hope you'll enjoy this Best of Trek Geeks episode--or enjoy it again! We'll be back with new episodes soon!

07 Jul 2022The "Problem" with Discovery01:16:48

Back in May, Bill wrote an op-ed style piece for TrekNews.net titled, "Star Trek: Discovery Has Problems (& How They Can Be Fixed)," which was a constructive look at the issues many fans feel that Discovery has as far as crisis fatigue.

It was an article that caused a lot of discussion and, this week, Bill and Dan return to break down the points the article makes and discuss how this enormously successful show might improve.

08 Nov 2016Khan Noonien Singh01:11:29

This week we focus on the greatest adversary Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise ever faced! We speak, of course, of Khan Noonien Singh!

We'll examine the backstory of this genetically-engineered super human, look at his appearances in Star Trek and talk about the character's evolution from Space Seed all the way to Into Darkness! Plus, we'll also discuss some of Khan's other appearances in books and comics.

Plus, we'll give our picks for the actors we would have cast as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness--and some of our picks just might surprise you!

All that and news--and did we mention we're giving away a thing--all in Episode 83 of the Trek Geeks Podcast! You'll want to chase us around the moons of Nibia and around the Antares Malestrom and around Perdition's Flame before you give this one up!

WIN STAR TREK BEYOND!

We're giving away a copy of the Star Trek Beyond Ultimate Blu-Ray Gift Set which is available only at Walmart!

08 Apr 2020Say Something Nice, Part III01:42:08

During this time of global pandemic, we thought to ourselves, "What could we do to give people a fun distraction and make them forget about COVID 19 for a while?"

Then, we had the idea to take the normal episode of Trek Geeks we'd do and do it as a Live Stream! On Tuesday night, April 7, 2020, we did just that! We had a great time with everyone during "Say Something Nice, Part III," and we share the recording of that with you this week.

Bill and Dan will each pick five things to say nice things about and, this time, they may be part of Trek or they may not!

Plus some news and TWENTY PERCENT discount from FanSets this week on the Flagship!

FIVE YEAR MISSION

Every note of music you hear on Trek Geeks is the amazing work of the band Five Year Mission. They’re writing one song for each episode of Star Trek–and we are HUGE fans!

They even have a rather eponymously named podcast here on the Trek Geeks Network! This week, their kids take to the mic to tell us what they’ve learned about Star Trek from dudes in a Star Trek band! Subscribe now on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you download podcasts!

5YM, of course, is every note of music you hear on Rewind, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Go get yourself a copy of all their CDs: Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Spock’s Brain, and The Trouble With Tribbles. 24 Apr 2015Andrew J. Robinson00:54:15

This week on the Trek Geeks Podcast, we're joined by the actor behind one of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's most intriguing characters, Andrew J. Robinson!

Given Garak's popularity among fans, it's hard to believe that he was only in 39 episodes of the series, isn't it?

Andy chats with Bill and Dan about his time on DS9, his insight into creating his character Scorpio in "Dirty Harry," his novel based on Garak, and how the Mirror Universe episodes weren't exactly his favorite (Sorry, Dan.), and his role now as a Professor at the University of Southern California School of Dramatic Arts!  He might also talk a little "Hellraiser" with us. Allegedly. ;)

We hope you enjoy this week's episode as much as we did!

28 Mar 2017TNG: Our Top 1001:20:20

Well, as the 30th anniversary of Star Trek the Next Generation continues to ramp up, we thought it would be fun to have another great "which is the best of the best" discussion.  With 178 episodes of TNG to choose from, we figured there will be a great mix of expected episodes, and possibly a few surprises!

But that's not all!  Since we are doing another "ranking episode,"  it only makes sense to bring back is Mr. TrekRanks himself - yeah, yeah, the man who actually fired the phasers on the good ole NX-01, Mr EnterpriseExtra, Jim Moorhouse and we are thrilled he is joining us again for our TNG discussion.

As with our previous TOS rankings, we have followed Jim's lead from his website and listed our episode, followed by a short 5 word description, and then an ultimate hashtag comment for each choice. Below are the choices of Dan and Bill for their Ultimate Top 10, and you can see Jim's TNG rankings at www.trekranks.com/tng-ranks!

FIVE YEAR MISSION

We love FIVE YEAR MISSION and we can't thank them enough for allowing us to use their music on Trek Geeks each and every episode. We're huge fans and we hope you'll become one, too--they're writing and recording one original song for each episode of the classic Star Trek series from the 1960's.

Warp on over to their website at FiveYearMission.net and check out each and every one of their incredible albums! You can hear them all: Year One, Year Two, Year Three, The Trouble with Tribbles, and of course, the amazing Spock's Brain!  Plus, don't forget that they are working on Year Four right now!

17 Dec 2021Oasis01:22:59

Star Trek: Enterprise paved a lot of ground in its first season, creating characters and a history of Starfleet. However, it also dared to bring a regular cast member from another Star Trek series on board as a guest star, playing a character completely unrelated.

We all know that the amazing René Auberjonois played Constable Odo for seven seasons on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but many people forget he also played Ezral in the first season Enterprise episode, "Oasis." For the second anniversary of his passing, we'll consider this episode and what René brings to it specifically.

Plus, we have a winner of some FanSets pins!

We've got one more brand-new episode in 2021 after this, so we hope you'll join us for this episode of The Flagship.

31 Mar 2021Acquisition01:09:56

As we continue our celebration of #Enterprise20, we return after our impromptu week off with an episode that Dan selected...

...so blame him

No, really.

Season 1's "Acquisition" is an episode that divides fandom: It's either great fan service or it's terrible fan service. This week, you'll get to decide! We'll tackle this MEHpisode and look at the things that worked, as well as a lot of things that didn't.

05 Dec 2017See It or Skip It: TNG S701:49:52

This week, we continue to wind down our coverage of Star Trek: The Next Generation's 30th Anniversary with our final "See It or Skip It" episode of 2017!

Joining us for this fan-favorite episode is our great friend, Jason Inman of Geek History Lesson, DC All Access, and now also of the brand-new Jupiter Jet comic (available at comic stores nationwide and on Comixology)!

We'll run down the 26 episodes in Season 7 and tell you which ones you should absolutely see, and which ones you could probably do without if you had to. Plus, find out how YOU can be a Guest Geek on Your Independent Star Trek Podcast for a future See It or Skip It and support FIVE YEAR MISSION at the same time!

28 Feb 2017Chain of Command01:17:46

This week we take a look at the two-part Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "Chain of Command!"

Picard is captured and tortured by the Cardassians?
Riker is relieved of his duties?
Troi has to wear a standard uniform?
Data wears Command red?

This is perhaps one of TNG's darkest episodes, and we'll dive in and discuss all the aspects.  Could this be a look inside the Obsidian Order?

We'll examine the central questions of this episode, too: We'll discuss whether Edward Jellico was a bad Captain, whether Riker conducted himself like a Starfleet Officer, and whether or not this is Patrick Stewart's best turn as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Plus--news on the DS9 Documentary, news on Star Trek Continues' 8th episodes (and the road to their series finale, new pins from our friends at FanSets, and a new premiere date for Discovery?? (Maybe the third time will be the charm!)  "It's all in Episode 94 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast" and we hope you'll join us!

It's time for The News From TrekNews.Net! This week, Dan & Bill look at new ads for Uber Eats, awards for Star Trek, and what might have happened in the TNG movies! It's the Oldest Brand New #StarTrek News Podcast & we've got you covered!

27 Mar 2019The Women of Star Trek01:27:22

One of the reasons we love Star Trek is because of its incredible and amazingly strong women that have been a part of the franchise since the very beginning.

Characters. Actors. Writers. Producers. Directors. Artists.

They've all contributed to a rich tapestry for more than half a century and Star Trek wouldn't be what it is today without every single one of them.

This week, we'll look at the characters that have helped shape this franchise at every turn. From Lieutenant Uhura to Michael Burnham, we'll discuss the characters that we feel are among the most ground breaking and those that have come to mean a lot to us.

Obviously, there's no way we could discuss them all in a single Trek Geeks episode, so we'll spend the next year celebrating the contributions of women in Star Trek in every capacity.

Plus, we'll have a special bonus segment with our dear friend, Lew Halboth, from FanSets to announce their brand new Women of Star Trek master set which will debut this summer at STLV---and how you could help determine future pins in this series!

FIVE YEAR MISSION

We are truly grateful to our friends FIVE YEAR MISSION for allowing us to use their music for every episode of Trek Geeks. They’re creating one song for every episode of TOS and their brand new album is amazing!

21 Oct 2020The Augments Arc01:12:50

Season 4 of Star Trek: Enterprise had several small, multi-episode arcs which helped extend the story telling and the characters. This week, we look at the first of those arcs which saw the return of a legendary Trek actor!

In 2004, Brent Spiner returned to Star Trek on television to portray one of the ancestors of Data's creator, Arik Soong, who was pretty big on genetic engineering and it looks like his "kids"--the augments he'd raised from embryos--are on the verge of starting a war between Earth and the Klingons.

It's The Augments Arc this week on the Flagship of the Trek Geeks Podcast Network!

FIVE YEAR MISSION

18 Sep 2024STLV Recap02:10:51

VIVA LAS VEGAS!

(Corrected Version)

Dan and Bill returned from their annual trip to the Star Trek Family Reunion and had a blast--even though it took Bill forever to edit this episode. Seriously, blame him for why the Trek Geeks haven't been in your ear holes.

There was probably a better way to say that. Sorry.

You'll get the full breakdown on their experience at STLV 2024: the good, the bad, and the potential for change. Plus, hear why Bill FINALLY enjoyed staying at the Rio for the first time in TEN YEARS!

But wait, there's more! Audio from inside the vendor hall with Dan and Bill with special guest appearances from Lew from FanSets and also our first ever guest on Trek Geeks nearly ten years ago: Michele Specht!

It's a super-sized episode and we hope you enjoy it! (Again, still Bill's fault.)

22 Sep 2022David Livingston01:23:47

This week, Bill and Dan welcome Star Trek royalty to the Trek Geeks Podcast!

He's helmed a record 62 episodes of Star Trek across The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. He's even directed the episode we refer to as "Star Trek's Finest Hour," DS9's "The Visitor," from Season 4.

We are thrilled to be joined this week by our very good friend, David Livingston for a discussion about his time on Star Trek, the gift that was "The Visitor," the Hollywood Food Coalition, and meeting David Livingston cosplayers at Trek conventions!

We hope you'll join us for an incredibly fun and enlightening discussion!

28 Jan 2021Enterprise 2001:22:12

This week, Bill and Dan begin their year-long celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Star Trek: Enterprise!

From concept to characters and beyond, they'll talk about why they love this series and why the appreciation for it has done nothing but grow over the years.

Plus, we'll talk about some of our personal favorite episodes from Enterprise, as well as some of yours!

20 Jun 2017Star Trek: Nemesis01:10:15

"Can you learn to see in the dark, Captain?"Shinzon

It was a dark movie. Literally and figuratively.  It ended up being the last of the Star Trek movies with the TNG cast.  But was it a worthy finale??

This week, the Trek Geeks will give their take on Star Trek: Nemesis.  Their memories of the 2002 film are not as positive as other feature films, and they will jump right into the reasons why this was a less than stellar big screen exit for Picard and his crew.

Prime Directive violations, dark sets, "tired" acting.  This list goes on and on.  But fear not, there are plenty of things that the Geeks liked, and they will get into those too!

Plus, perhaps the biggest announcement ever from our good friends at Star Trek Continues dropped this week!  Also, a familiar face recently got to test out the new Star Trek Bridge Crew virtual reality game.  What did she have to say?

In addition, if you are attending San Diego ComicCon or STLV, you may want to make some room for a new con exclusive Holiday Keepsake ornament!  Finally, QMx is releasing a replica of a classic TOS piece of furniture and we have all the details for you!

It's all in Episode 106 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast! We hope you'll join us as we raise a glass of Chateau Picard!

FIVE YEAR MISSION

30 Oct 2018Take Me Out to the Holosuite01:14:00

It's the Great American Pastime in Space!

One of Deep Space Nine's most memorable outings has to be the seventh season episode, "Take Me Out to the Holosuite." Sisko accepts the challenge of a Vulcan nemesis in his favorite sport, putting the honor of the DS9 senior staff on the line!

It's an episode filled with humor and heart and perfect to discuss during this time of year when the baseball season comes to a close with the World Series.

We'll talk about what makes this episode so classic and about the one, true obsession of Benjamin Sisko.

This episode is recorded live at Northeast Trek Con in Albany, New York.

Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack--it's Your Independent Star Trek Podcast and it's time to PLAY BALL!

12 Jan 2016To Axanar and Beyond!01:18:11

While we were away on our holiday break, there were a few...uh...developments...in the world of Star Trek, too.  The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens! We'll break down what we thought of it--AND why we're not freaking out yet. We're also going to take some time to talk about the lawsuit brought against Axanar Productions by CBS and Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement.

In full disclosure, we've both donated to Axanar on two different occasions.  We are not attorneys and do not claim to know the intricacies of intellectual property law. There are things we’ve observed and questions/concerns was have AS DONORS that will be the focus of our discussion in today's episode.

Allow us to say up front that we have absolutely no beef or problem with Alec Peters, Rob Burnett, or anyone associated with Axanar. We’ve had Alec on our podcast twice--once at our invite and once at Axanar's request. We've asked our listeners to consider donating to this project in the past, and we feel justified in asking some of these questions in the wake of the lawsuit.

Let us also say that we do NOT believe that anyone associated with Axanar has done anything illegal or malfeasant in any way. That's not what this episode is about.

Most importantly, we want to see the Axanar feature completed. We LOVE the concept. We LOVE the story. Truthfully, that's why we donated our money in the first place. We hope for a resolution in this dispute so the movie can be made and fans around the world can enjoy the movie.

We'll also kick off our Trek50 Project for Star Trek's 50th Anniversary and YOU play a direct part in it!  All you have to do is tell us about the very first time you ever watched Star Trek!  Find out more in today's episode or on our Trek50 page!

25 Apr 2019The Wrath of Khan01:10:06

It is the Star Trek film to which all others are invariably compared at some point or another.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan breathed new life into the Star Trek franchise in the summer of 1982, and began a string of successful films which eventually resulted in Trek returning to television.

We'll discuss why we love this movie and what makes it the greatest of all time. Everything from favorite scenes to the captivating performance of the late Ricardo Montalban.

This week, while Dan and Bill are on vacation, we bring you one of our Carpool Conversations originally recorded for our Patreon subscribers.

Star Trek: Picard promises a different look at Jean-Luc Picard at this phase of his life, and that got us to thinking about which other Star Trek characters we'd like to see examined in their own theoretical spin-off series!

We'll discuss our spontaneous choices as we commute to work together in this episode!

25 Sep 2016The Man Trap01:05:38

This Episode of Trek Geeks is Dedicated to the Memory of Eric Cone

It quite possibly was the television event that forever changed history!  On September 8, 1966 the very first episode of Star Trek was shown on NBC.  It was "The Man Trap" and this week the Trek Geeks are ready to discuss the great Salt Vampire of M-113!

Bill and Dan will discuss all the interesting and quirky things about this episode.  After watching it countless times over the last 40+ years, they certainly have a lot to say about this unique premier episode!  Was that REALLY red blood on Spock's forehead?  Why does McCoy have a virtual pharmacy in his bedroom?  And how does Ole Salty know to speak Swahili to Uhura? And what's with that hand-plant in the Botany Lab?

In addition, they ask and discuss if hunting down the creature made this debut episode of Star Trek seem like every other space-themed tv show in the 1960’s where we kill what we don’t understand?

Also, in the news, get your microwave popcorn ready because Star Trek Beyond is coming to digital download and DVD soon, past guest Manu Intiraymi's project "The Circuit" has started their Kickstarter fund raising, and Adam Nimoy's "For The Love of Spock" is now available!

All this and more on what certainly is NOT the last of it's kind - it's Episode 77 of the Trek Geeks Podcast!

THANKS AND GRATITUDE!

We can't thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough. We are truly grateful to them for allowing us to use their music for every episode of Trek Geeks. You really should check them out--they're writing and recording one original song for each episode of  the classic Star Trek series from the 1960's.

13 Feb 2018The Conscience of the King01:18:32

4,000 people.

That's how many were executed at the directive of Governor Kodos of the failed Tarsus IV after a fungus destroyed most of the colony's food supply leaving 8,000 colonists to starve to death. Kodos ordered the deaths of the 4,000 so the other 4,000 colonists might live.

Among those survivors was James T. Kirk and, now, he's left with the task of figuring out if actor Anton Karidian is really Kodos the Executioner.

This week, we'll discuss this classic TOS episode and why it was one of Bill's favorites, even as a child. We'll talk about our favorite moments from this episode and examine the central question, "What, if anything, could Captain Kirk have done differently?

Plus, news on a brand new Star Trek merchandise portal on the world's biggest retailer, how William Shatner thinks he could be incorporated into Star Trek again, and listener voice mails in this episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

We'll take a look at this unique and bold character in the Star Trek Universe and discuss why this Captain is among Starfleet's all-time best.

Joining us in the discussion is our dear friend, Amy Imhoff! You've probably seen her in panels at Star Trek Las Vegas or even read her writing about Star Trek, The X-Files and Battlestar Galactica. This week, she joins us for the first time on The Flagship and it's a fantastic conversation that we're sure you'll enjoy!

18 Oct 2016The Ultimate Crew01:11:23

One of the coolest ideas in Star Trek Timelines is the ability to have any single member of the Star Trek Universe as part of your crew. We are talking ANY character from any series, ship, timeline, universe, etc. That got us thinking. Who would WE pick for our ULTIMATE Crew? We break down all the main crew assignments in this "infinite possibilities episode". Heck, even waste extraction is discussed because Bill thinks that would be perfect for Dan!

In Star Trek news, perhaps one of the most EPIC and awkward pics in history was taken recently at Star Trek Destination Europe as almost two dozen Star Trek alums got together on the bridge of the Enterprise!

Also, time to fork over some quatloos or gold pressed latinum because the revised and expanded Star Trek Encyclopedia is now available and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive!

Finally, both Bill and Dan received some swag in the mail over the weekend. What did they get and who is more excited?

It's Episode 80 of Trek Geeks--beam aboard, won't you?

We'll be back with an all-new episode soon!

02 Apr 2020Chakotay01:32:30

As our year-long celebration of Star Trek: Voyager's 25th Anniversary continues, this week we examine a character that we've really grown to love.

As First Officer of the USS Voyager, he was responsible for executing the Captain's vision--but that wasn't how his path began in "Caretaker." A Maquis terrorist, he was thrust in to the role when stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Over time, he became indispensable to Captain Janeway and the epitome of what an outstanding Starfleet Officer should be.

Join us this week as we look at Chakotay on the Flagship of the Trek Geeks Podcast Network!

13 Nov 2018In the Pale Moonlight01:14:20

It is a hour of Star Trek that is filled with compromise after disastrous compromise, and hanging in the balance is Benjamin Sisko's morality and self respect.

Starfleet is losing the war against the Dominion and they need the Romulans in the fight, and Sisko does what he never expected he'd have to.

We'll look at this incredible Deep Space Nine episode and discuss how Sisko has the weight of the Alpha Quadrant on his shoulders and humanity hangs in the balance.

This episode of Trek Geeks is no FAAAAAAAAAAKE and we hope you'll join us!

11 Jun 2019The People Who Made TOS Work01:36:53

No one does it alone.

Not even "The Great Bird of the Galaxy."

The idea was Gene Roddenberry's, but it took an amazing group of people to help make it a reality. This week, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Turnabout Intruder--the last episode of The Original Series--we look at The People Who Made TOS Work to shed some light on some names you may or may not know, and why their contributions to Star Trek were essential.

Joining us this week to look at some of the amazing contributors to Star Trek is our good friend Ken Tripp from Trek.FM's Standard Orbit podcast!

06 Jun 2018Odo & Quark01:15:19

Of all the relationships in Star Trek, perhaps none is as layered and complex as the one between Odo and Quark.

On one side, you have the lawful Odo who is responsible for ensuring the safety of one of the Alpha Quadrant's most strategic locations. On the other, you have Ferengi bar owner Quark (he's *not* a barkeep) who seems to turn every situation into gray area with his dealings.

It's an unlikely friendship and we'll dive in on it this week!

Plus news, and an announcement from Dan and Bill on their new venture in this week's episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

In this special crossover episode of Discovering Trek, Dan and Bill are honored to have Noah Averbach-Katz join them for a special discussion about his time on Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 as the Andorian, Ryn.  The character quickly became one of the most popular of the season and Noah got to live out every Star Trek fans dream by playing a role in our beloved universe.

During our conversation, we discuss his fandom when he was young, what it was like to be directed by the Star Trek legend Jonathan Frakes, and what it was like to work with his wife Mary Wiseman, aka Sylvia Tilly.  Along the way we also find out just how...interesting it was to film scenes with the Queen herself - Grudge the cat!

Bill and Dan cannot thank Noah enough for joining them on the podcast, and they hope you enjoy the conversation as much as they did on Discovering Trek!

24 Feb 2016Kipleigh Brown00:58:34

It isn't everyday that a guest responds to an invitation to come on our show in Klingon! How could we not be excited?

In this weeks episode of Trek Geeks - A Star Trek Podcast, Dan and Bill welcome the very funny and very talented Kipleigh Brown to the show! As Lt. Additionally we talk about other projects Kipleigh has been seen in, such as "R.U.R.: Genesis" and "Yesterday was a Lie", both directed by our good friend James Kerwin, as well as Season 3's "The Forgotten" on Star Trek: Enterprise. Whether it is stand up comedy, drama, science fiction or sounding like a robot, Kipleigh is always full of energy and ready to share some great stories!

In addition, the guys discuss Bills recent guest appearance on the Tricorder Transmissions Podcast as we finally "cross the podcast streams" with our good friends Jeff and Heather.

Also, Tony Todd in the new Star Trek Series on CBS All Access? Your face in Star Trek: Wrath of Gems? The Trek Geeks Trek50 Project? All this and more on Episode 48 of Trek Geeks!

01 May 2023The 300th One01:57:13

Bill and Dan are back after an unintended and unscheduled hiatus to celebrate their 300th episode!

They've planned this episode several times. At first, there were going to be special guests. Then, after that plan was scrapped, they were going to have someone else host Episode 300. After careful deliberation, they decided that the best way to celebrate such an epic landmark was to take it back to basics.

So, in this episode, you'll get the guys talking about their friendship and the history of Trek Geeks--and they'll also work in some questions from the Trek Geeks Patreonicles and voice mails from Camp Khitomer!

Sincere thanks to everyone that has ever taken the time to listen to the podcast. You are all a part of this journey and the fabric of Trek Geeks and, for that, Bill and Dan are truly grateful.

Here's to 1,000 more!

03 May 2016The Dominion01:03:06

This week on Trek Geeks, we take a look at what could possibly be the greatest adversary the Federation has ever faced--The Dominion!

More menacing than the Borg.
More dangerous than the Klingon or Romulan Empires.
More evil than the dreaded Aquatic or Arboreal Xindi.

From the introduction of the Jem'Hadar in Season 2 of Deep Space Nine, they would play a major role in the series through the finale, we'll discuss the far-reaching hand of the Founders and the Dominion!

We'll talk about the aspects of the Founders, the Vorta, and the Jem'Hadar we appreciated the most--as well as some pretty big inconsistencies that we've always wondered about.

In addition, we'll take a look at some of our favorite moments through out the Dominion story arc--plus, you'll learn what Dan thought the name of "The Great Link" was when he first heard it!

20 Aug 2019Majel Barrett Roddenberry01:30:37

Our Women of Trek spotlight series continues this week as we take a look at one of Star Trek's original contributors.

She was an absolute force of nature, and in this episode we'll examine the roles played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry in front of the camera, behind the scenes, and in fandom itself.

Number One, Christine Chapel, Lwaxana Troi...even the Enterprise Computer, Majel left an indelible mark on the franchise and created characters that we continue to talk about to this day.

But there was far more than that. Majel was an Ambassador of Trek, especially in the years after Gene passed, and we'll examine that aspect of her life as well, and consider her legacy.

Plus, we'll have a full length preview of the brand new Five Year Mission Podcast at the end of this episode and don't forget about your exclusive FanSets discount code!
