06 Jun 202203: Why Stats and Numbers Matter in Health & Safety00:15:34

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee brings up an ongoing conversation that’s essential for the continuous improvement of workplace Health & Safety.

There are many ways that Health & Safety practitioners are required to collect, sort, and analyze data related to workplace Health & Safety. If you are like me and not the best of friends with maths, this might not be as easy. But I am here to explain why and remind you that how we do this MATTERS.

Join me in this vital conversation that is shaping the Health & Safety profession right now.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • [00:30] The difference between Health & Safety practitioners and statisticians
  • [02:09] More about the H&S Industry Standards in North America
  • [02:58] To uncover and challenge some H&S-related acronyms
  • [06:00] Understand the idea behind the ever-present “Smoke Shack Stat”
  • [13:11] My take on how we, as H&S practitioners, should approach this conversation

The Transmit Safety Podcast is here to help health and safety practitioners achieve a holistic approach to workplace health and safety so they can become impactful leaders and put the value of safety into action.

As promised in the episode, you can find the Construction Safety Research Alliance report titled “The Statistical Invalidity of TRIR as a Measure of Safety Performance” that I mentioned HERE.

Quotes from this episode

“... I do defer to these industry standards on what types of Health and Safety statistics should health and safety practitioners be collecting. But these are just numbers. It is how these numbers are being used and interpreted, that can cause issues or success when discussing workplace health and safety.”

“... each number on your injury statistics spreadsheet is a person. Each number on that injury statistics spreadsheet has a ripple effect into your workplace, into families, into communities. So how we collect, sort, analyze, and communicate Workplace Health & Safety data matters.”

Quotes from this episode

“I understand that we have a lot of things to get done, but you just have to be flexible. You just have to choose the time [for journaling] that works for you.” - Bunmi Ibitoye

“...creating a personal journal should be beneficial to your mental health. So it'd be something that is helping you de-stress it and not making it another to-do list.” - Aimee Arsenault

“...it [a personal journal] helps improve concentration, helps find solutions to problems [...] because when your mind is free, and you're able to find solutions to things, you get some form of relief.” - Bunmi Ibitoye

“It's not always easy. But when you engage your mind in something else, you've redirected your thought, you’ve redirected what you're focusing on, and that helps you take your mind off work.” - Bunmi Ibitoye

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee talks about something that’s instrumental to a successful Health and Safety Program: allies.

One of the most common factors for failure or setbacks when creating healthy and safe workplaces is isolation. Join me today as I share with you an anecdote about a safety advisor who has a problem: despite their efforts, safety wasn't improving within the organization. Sounds familiar?

Through this story, I’ll touch on some essential questions you should consider as a health and safety practitioner or professional, and also some key concepts on how to create the change you need in your organization.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Health and Safety strategies in isolation do not work
  • Change Agents and their importance for creating a healthy and safe workplace
  • How to identify your organization’s Change Agents
  • The different types of personal power and how to harness it for change

Quotes from this episode

“Nobody likes to make mistakes. So we focus on the things that we feel confident in. But there is wisdom in every misstep that we take as professionals, as practitioners.”

“Yet the path to success is not always linear, you take one step forward, two steps back, a leap to the right, a stumble to the left.”

“They were trying to do it all by themselves. They were the ones asking for change, they were the ones writing new policies, they were the ones implementing new training requirements. They were working in isolation. But
isolated strategies do not work.”

“I think it's important to say that these people [leaders], you know, are not always management. They can be management, but
a job title doesn't make a leader.”

Quotes from this episode

“The reality is not everything is urgent. Not everything is important. I'm gonna say that again. Not everything is urgent. And not everything is important. Regardless of who is on the other end of that request.”

“You can't just flat out say no. But it's okay to say not today. It's okay to say not right now. It's okay to say maybe I'm going to redirect this task to somebody else who has the same skill set as I.”

“You are important. Keep track of your time, track the tasks, requests, and prioritize based on your definition of urgency and importance. Say it with me. I am only one person and can only do so many things in a day. And that's okay.”

19 Sep 202210: To the C-Suite and Beyond with Leigh-Ann Stewart00:53:33

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee has an invaluable conversation with Leigh-Ann Stewart, a fellow CRSP.

There is never an exact copy-and-paste career path in the Health & Safety world. As I’ve touched on in previous episodes (i.e. Episode 5), there’s a wide range of possibilities out there and you must decide which one works best for you.

This episode is also packed full of important lessons Leigh-Ann and I learned along our careers that will help you become a better OHS practitioner, no matter your path. But, if yours has taken you to an administrative role within a company, you’ll certainly benefit from Leigh-Ann’s expertise. She climbed the corporate ladder to the C-suite level at the company she worked at for almost two decades and she is sharing all about her own path and what it took to get there.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Leigh-Ann’s journey of climbing the corporate ladder and her recent transition into consulting
  • How to get involved in the decision-making conversations, even when you don’t have a seat at the table (yet)
  • A 3-step program to integrate OHS strategies into your organization’s business approach
  • Why not every OHS practitioner is cut out to be a consultant
  • Define what success means to you and constantly touch back on it
  • The importance of cultivating a professional network

Quotes from this episode

“Your primary audience is the one doing the work. And your Health and Safety Manual needs to be for them. It needs to be easily understood, putting that paper into practice.”

“Every time somebody asks you a question about the application of the words on the paper or the policy, the procedure, that's an indication there could be room for improvement.”

“Don't feel like you have to carry everything. [...] Just because you can carry the weight of things doesn't mean that it's not heavy. [...] Sometimes we need to realize that it's okay to ask for help.”

So, today let's go in and break down what SMART actually means in more detail and give you the tips and questions you need in order to create better SMART strategic goals.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable or Achievable
  • Relevant or Realistic
  • Time-Bound

20 Feb 202318: It’s Not Always About The Language with Olivia Augustin00:34:23

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, I'm talking with Olivia Augustin about learning English, writing emails, and being more inclusive.

In our Health and Safety roles there are people we work with who have English as a second language, third language, fourth language, or more, and let’s face it, English is the suckiest language in the world. So, how do you navigate that situation and guarantee you’re being inclusive?

However, even if we are native speakers, whenever we start work in a new company or a new industry we have to learn a new workplace language, the specific slang that is used there, and because we’re Health and Safety people, the inevitable acronyms, which is not an easy process.

Luckily, in this episode, we have Olivia Augustin, a certified Technical + Business English teacher who's also an engineer and the host of the English for Engineers Podcast, as our guest and she has all the answers.

Tune in to hear her tips for learning a new (workplace) language, how to be more inclusive with non-native speakers, a way to help with your written business communication, and much more.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Olivia’s journey from an engineer to a certified English teacher
  • The biggest concern engineers who work with Olivia have
  • 5 tips to learn a new (workplace) language
  • The great benefits of using templates for email writing
  • How to be more inclusive when working with non-native English speakers
  • “Engineer speak” and other perception errors about engineers

06 Mar 202319: Putting Your Values Into Action as A Consumer Outside The Workplace00:17:53

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee is talking about putting your values into action outside of the workplace.

If you hold safety as a value, how is that impacting your decisions as a consumer outside of the workplace?

This is a topic I'm very passionate about. I hold safety as a value, safety for the environment, safety for the people, and that’s just so deeply integrated internal code of ethics, with my personal morals, and my personal values that it impacts the products that I am buying, who I want to work for and work with, as well as a lot of my decision-making.

I know that not everyone thinks about safety as I do, and that’s okay. However, this is something that many have never stopped to think about, and as Health & Safety professionals or practitioners and, most importantly, as humans, we should take it into consideration.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The story of when I first realized not everybody thinks about safety as a value in the same way I do
  • Not all organizations need to hold safety as a value directly
  • The importance of paying attention to the supply chain and who really owns the company you’re buying from
  • You can make a difference if it’s in your financial power to do so
  • Put your values into action by being a more conscious consumer

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, join Aimee and Lisa Marinic to learn all you need to know about industrial hygiene as a Health & Safety practitioner.

When you're going into Health & Safety and you're going out into the field for the first time, it's easy to notice safety hazards. They're visible, clear, and very easily actionable so, of course, they get a lot more attention.

But, today we’re going to talk about the completely invisible health hazards that despite being harder to notice can be just as dangerous or fatal as their counterparts.

Lisa Marinic is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a CRSP. She has spent the last two decades studying and working in the field of industrial hygiene and occupational health and is a passionate advocate for workplace health.

In this episode, she is here to educate us on health hazards, industrial hygiene, and what we, as Health & Safety practitioner and professionals, can do to help.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What Industrial Hygiene is exactly and why should you care
  • Why industrial hygienists are not common in most industries
  • The importance of Health & Safety professionals in leadership roles for  industrial hygiene
  • What bringing in an industrial hygienist can do for your organization and what to look for
  • The challenging conversations around health hazards
  • How Health & Safety practitioners can start addressing health hazards

03 Apr 202321: The Importance of Clean and Functioning Washrooms at Worksites00:20:53

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee highlights the importance of clean and functioning washrooms at worksites for worker health and morale.

Going to the washroom is something we all do, every single day. Therefore, having access to clean and functioning washrooms on-site might seem like a no-brainer. This is very often not the case. I have lost count of the number of sites I have been to where there either was no access to a washroom or the washroom was nasty.

I have heard stories firsthand of women who don’t go to the bathroom all day or of designated corners of worksites that men use as a toilet because there is no on-site access to a washroom. This is not only demeaning but it also leads to a whole host of health concerns.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Inclusivity in washrooms
  • The impact of washrooms on worker morale
  • Clean and functioning washrooms relate directly to worker health
  • Washroom design should be included in the pre-job planning phase and budget of a project
  • 3 of the most important features of a washroom - accessibility, hygiene, and privacy
  • The need for education and needs assessments around washrooms

Quotes from this episode

“How can we create a welcoming and accepting workplace environment to all of our workers and then not provide adequate washroom facilities?”

“When workers have access to clean and well-maintained washrooms on site, it sends a message that their basic needs are being taken care of seriously, and that their well-being is a priority for the company.”

If workers don't have access to clean and functioning washrooms, they may be more likely to develop health issues, dehydration, urinary tract infections, or maybe depending on the time period that they have been without adequate washrooms leads to more serious conditions like kidney stones. These health issues can be uncomfortable, painful, and can increase their amount of sick days.”

What do you do with all of those directional and operational documents that have been created by putting your value of safety into action? We all know that a well organized banker's box of documentation is nothing to be ashamed of, not all of us have moved over to a health and safety software.

So whether or not you're using paper or electronic files for your health and safety management system, let's dive in and explore some tips and tricks to effectively manage that process.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What document management is all about

Quotes from this episode

“Think about it from the perspective of what if you won a billion dollars and you were no longer at your position? Would the next person coming in after you have any idea of where your files are stored? And how to retrieve them and would they be easily able to pick up that naming convention that you have in place?”

“You shouldn't be the only one that has the key to the paperwork. The key to the process is to make sure that you understand the record management requirements but also that everybody who needs to get access and interact with the records understands those requirements as well.”

“Managing both paper and electronic documentation or records is critical to ensuring that your organization is able to demonstrate your proof of process.”

05 Jun 202325: Perspective, Emotional Intelligence, and Empathy as A Health And Safety Practitioner00:16:45

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, I dive into the fascinating world of perspective, emotional intelligence, and empathy.

This topic came to my mind because when I'm interacting with other health and safety practitioners or professionals, one of the themes that continues to come up is “I'm right, they're wrong. I know what I'm doing. They don't know what they're doing.”

As a health and safety practitioner professional, you need to develop the skills to enhance your ability to understand and connect with others.

In this episode, I give you five steps that I hope can help you to be on your way to becoming more empathetic – and therefore a more effective health and safety professional and practitioner.

Quotes from this episode

“Here's the thing, I hope you're sitting down. I hope your mind isn't going to explode with this notion. But you are not always right. You do not always have the one answer that will solve all the problems, especially when you are only looking at it from your own perspective.”

“When we empathize with somebody, when we try to understand their experience – what are they feeling? What are they thinking? – we can create a safer space for open communication that is going to have a direct impact on the overall company culture.”

“We all are different. We all have come from our own personal experiences. And the way that you see the world, the way that you think about the world is based on your experiences. So what can you do to expand and become more aware and be more empathetic and build that connection? You need to go beyond your own experience. You need to seek diverse experiences.”

03 Jul 202327: Three Things That Frustrate Me as a Health and Safety Professional00:17:40

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, I talk about 3 things that frustrate me as a health and safety professional.

I have been really struggling to record this podcast episode. I initially wanted to talk about the 10 things that I hate about being a health and safety professional. But every time I turn the mic on, every time I’ve hit record for the last five days I circle back to something that's been very much a hot topic in the news.

And I don't even want to talk about the topic that has been in the news but what I will say is that it has led to me feeling a lot of frustration.

Whenever I'm frustrated about something, I take a moment and ask myself, “Why am I frustrated about this particular response?” And I'm starting to do some more self-reflection on that process.

So, in today's episode, I wanted to share some of the frustrations that I have as a health and safety professional.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The value of safety is not being put into action
  • Frustration as a trigger to try and understand where other people are coming from
  • Expecting to be an expert in way too many things as a health and safety professional but not having the resources to support that professional development
  • The lack of an internal support network as a health and safety professional

17 Jul 202328: Inclusive Workwear Design With Jodi Huettner00:37:49

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, I'm talking with Jodi Huettner, a  mechanical engineer with first-hand experience of the challenges faced by women on worksites due to ill-fitting and inadequate workwear.

I have been waiting to talk to Jodi for a while. Every time I am at a conference or I'm looking for information about the discussion of inclusive workwear, she’s always at the forefront of that topic.

So, I wanted to talk to her about what she's doing within her business, Helga Wear, but also how much she’s advocating for inclusive workwear in general.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Productivity challenges women face when wearing the wrong size workwear
  • Navigating the balance between price expectation and profit when creating PPE for women
  • 2 steps employers can take to promote the use of safe and inclusive workwear
  • The difference between what's written into policy and what is actually happening on worksites with PPE
  • The importance of reporting when PPE doesn’t fit or leads to hazards at a worksite

14 Aug 202329: The Vagus Nervous System and Its Connection to Health and Well-Being00:13:54

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, we're going to be diving into the fascinating world of the vagus nervous system and its connection to overall health and well-being.

For a few years now, I've been dealing with some health issues. Nothing alarming, but daily life-impacting. Regular doctors kept on telling me that I was fine. I would go for tests and the results would say that I was fine. There's nothing wrong with me. But I knew something wasn't right. So I kept on searching for an answer.

This summer I landed in a virtual workshop about gut health, and one of the sessions was on the vagus nerve. I knew that we had it, but it didn't really click for me until I was sitting in this session with a subject matter expert about how important understanding the vagus nervous system really is. And I want to share that with you.

Stick around until the end because I have a relaxing guided breathing practice for you to try to help you integrate this knowledge into your daily routine.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What the vagus nervous system is
  • The vagus nerve’s role in your body’s stress response
  • How to tap into the power of the vagus nervous system
  • The benefits of a breathing practice

11 Sep 202331: Five Reasons Why Your Directive Documentation Might Not Be Working00:20:44

In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee dives deep into a common workplace challenge - why people sometimes don't follow policies and procedures.

It doesn't matter the size of the organization, the organization has to ensure the health and safety of the employees. Now, when we think about that compliance standpoint, oftentimes policies and procedures are only followed when someone from corporate or an auditor is there.

Can you relate to spending hours crafting what you think is the perfect set of directive documentation, you have a fantastic procedure, only to find out through observations or feedback that people aren't following them. It can be frustrating. But fear not, I've got five reasons why your directive documentation might not be working and how to improve them.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Using clear and concise language to convey your message in documentation
  • Involve employees in the creation and review of documentation
  • Training is essential for ensuring that documentation is followed
  • Ensure your documentation is regularly updated
  • There needs to be accountability for not following policies and procedures

Quotes from this episode

“Clear communication isn't just about the words, isn't just about what people are saying. It's what they're not saying when it comes to communicating your policies, your practices, your procedures, your standards”

“It's not enough to have a great document. You also need to ensure that people understand how to follow it. If you just assume that they're going to figure it out on their own. You're definitely setting yourself up for disappointment.”

“If there's no consequences for not following a policy or procedure, then why would people take them seriously? They may feel that they're there, but there's no repercussions. And if there's no repercussions, then why would they follow them?”

“Disciplinary action shouldn't be punitive. When done correctly, disciplinary action is a learning opportunity.“
