The Transform Your birth podcast will educate, entertain and support your ability to navigate pregnancy and prepare to give birth. We can't control birth, but Tracey helps us to see how we can influence it and how it helps us to become parents. Transform Parenting Founder Tracey Anderson Askew explores birth through stories and the lens of what birth can teach us. She prepares families for birth and parenting and views birth as the catalyst for the transformation necessary to go from woman to mother, and man to father. These podcasts will share that wisdom and change the current birth narrative from what happens in birth to how birth changes us.

15 Nov 2023 | Chanelle - Physiological homebirth highlighting what made a difference to support this beautiful experience | 00:52:17
Chanelle shares with us her decision-making process when she decided to have her baby at home. Pushing beyond other people’s opinions isn’t always easy and we discuss in detail the wisdom of women to know where they feel safest to give birth. She shares the importance of getting her mind to be ok should she need to transfer, and to surrender to the mystery of what lies ahead. Chanelle ends up with a long labour, and yet uses her mindset to go into a trance state, maintaining her capacity to keep going. She goes into a state of timelessness and the length of her labour does not worry her at all. She pushes her baby out, births the placenta and has a perineum that is completely intact. A very straightforward, uncomplicated birth that all women should listen to to remind us that birth can be this way, to counteract much of the fear surrounding the birth process. She also shares with us her mother-beast awakening. Enjoy dear ones, and allow her story to inspire you to open your mind to what is possible.
24 May 2023 | Midwife Ali Teate shares the different models of Care available to pregnant women | 00:47:58
Ali goes through the different models of care available to women when they are having a baby. She highlights that many of the models are very fragmented and don’t really cater to the experience of the family. She highlights how relationships matter, and tends to set the birthing parent up to feel more positive about the process. She also pulls apart what it is you get when you experience the different models of care. The model of care you access plays a significant role in the outcome of how your baby enters the world. This is a topic that is not talked about enough. Well worth a listen even if you have already chosen your model of care - you might be able to bring in other forms of support.

She chose to be induced when her blood pressure was considerably high. She shares with us some great strategies that she used to support her inner calm, from affirmations to tools her partner offered to find comfort. Her birth was a wonderful experience which caused her to feel very proud of herself. As a result, her mental health post birth has been very positive as she enjoys getting to know her baby. Today Sarah talks to us extensively about the hormone of oxytocin during labour, breastfeeding and parenting. Our talk reminded me of the intricacies of mother nature’s blueprint, and just how well she has set us up for birth and parenting. It left me wondering - when we interfere with birth - at what cost? She encourages us to be fully informed in our decision-making; to listen to our hearts and our intuition; and to claim our rightful role as the real experts in our bodies and our children. This episode is dense in detail, and yet left me feeling in awe of the human journey of reproduction.

18 Dec 2024 | 100th Episode of the Transform Your Birth Podcast | 00:30:19
Well we have clocked 100 episodes and been going for 2 years. It’s quite a milestone, and one I am very proud of. Putting together something like this, takes a team. I want to acknowledge Katie, who inspired the idea, Lindsay who got us all set up, Nadia – our producer and Carmen who books our guests. To put something as special as this out into the world is no small feat – and worth the effort. The intention of this podcast has always been to educate, through story telling, what moves the needle. What you can learn, do or be that can make the biggest difference to how you experience whatever is on your path. So on with the wisdom.

13 Nov 2024 | Baby brain: An expansion of capability and self | 00:23:01
In this session I am going to help you to understand a little about how a pregnant brain changes, preparing us for motherhood and to meet the needs of our children. These changes last a lifetime, and are definitely an upgrade of the system. This information has come from the book by a neuroscientist, Dr Sarah McKay, ‘Baby Brain,’ The surprising neuroscience of how pregnancy and motherhood sculpt our brains and change our minds (for the better). 08 Feb 2023 | Elley - Overcoming fear, timelessness in labour, letting go of the monkey mind | 00:33:02
Elley had heard a lot of stories about birth from her mother who was a midwife, and then a sister who had a difficult birth and so she came into pregnancy quite fearful. She did lots of reading and the ‘Transform Your Birth’ course which shifted her perspective. She went into spontaneous labour and spent most of it at home. She discusses the timelessness of birth. Her second stage needed a little help but with good care and support she was able to push her baby out, and experienced a big high afterwards. We discuss letting go of the monkey mind, and the altered state of birth. She identifies the fear tension pain syndrome as a great understanding to her being more confident in birth. Her advice to pregnant women is prepare - prepare - prepare! Thank you Elley and little Edward.

She arrives at the hospital and has her baby in the water. She marvels at how strong she is, and reflects on the power of her knowledge to understand what was going on and how to manage each of the stages. 22 May 2024 | Alicia - Induction with 2 false starts, the influence of the environment, vaginal examinations, choosing to avoid the drugs | 00:53:46
Alicia in her pregnancy didn’t really believe she could have an unmedicated birth, but after doing the ‘Transform Your Birth’ course she starts to open her mind to new ways of thinking. She ends up not even wanting the drugs during her labour. I loved the level of detail Alicia goes into when sharing her story. She weaves together the different twists and turns of her birth experience and the impact it had on her mindstate. She was exceptional in how she adapted, from going in to have an induction, and being sent home because they were too busy. This happened twice! She was incredibly gracious, and on the third attempt they were able to get the labour going. She shares how she managed the intensity of labour, vaginal examinations and how she made the different decisions by asking questions. Such great wisdom in this episode. Enjoy listening to Alicia’s story.

This is a ripe time for growth and transformation so listen in to find out more.

28 Feb 2024 | Gina - Author of ‘A Parents Guide to Safer Childbirth.’ | 00:50:40
Today I am talking to Gina Mundy. For over 20 years, Gina has been an attorney that has specialized in childbirth cases that have gone wrong. It has been this experience which motivated her to write the book, "A Parent's Guide to a Safer Childbirth." She wants women to use the power of knowledge to help them to make choices that support the healthy delivery of her baby. This is such an interesting conversation and comes with many warnings of things to be aware of, that can potentially be harmful to both the mother and baby. An eye opening conversation that helps us to understand that there is no one way, and every decision matters. 03 Jul 2024 | Hazel - 4 Factors that impact your experience of birth and VBAC | 00:55:41
I have for you today Dr Hazel Keedle who is a Senior Lecturer of Midwifery at The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Western Sydney University. Hazel has more than two decades of experience as a clinician in nursing and midwifery, educator and researcher. Hazel’s research interests are vaginal birth after caesarean, birth trauma and maternity experiences explored primarily using mixed methodologies. Hazel's work is recognised nationally and internationally, with many invited conference and seminar presentations including academic publications and a book for women based on her PhD findings ‘Birth after Caesarean: Your Journey to a Better Birth’. Hazel is the lead researcher on the largest maternity experiences survey, The Birth Experience Study.
She starts by discussing the 4 factors that will impact the birth experience, and how we can ensure we create the best possible conditions for birth to unfold. Hazel looked at the experiences of women attempting to have a VBAC. She assumed the most important part of their experience would be pushing a baby out of their vagina. Instead what she discovered were 4 important factors that directly influenced how they felt about their birth experience. She then goes on to share with us some of the evidence around the risks of VBAC and the real risks of uterine rupture. and leaves us with some very encouraging advice. This is a fabulous episode for those women planning a VBAC. or any woman who wants to appreciate the conditions necessary to have a good birth experience, regardless of what unfolds on the day. 03 Apr 2024 | Tracey talks about making decisions through pregnancy and birth | 00:20:27
Today I will be talking about how to make good decisions during pregnancy and childbirth. The key is preparation so that you understand the birth process and start to discover what are the things that are important to you. When making decisions, you will need to ask the questions both prior to birth and on the day. Your job is to identify the difference between a medical necessity and a choice. I have created a handout for you capturing some of the examples from this episode and many more. To receive your free download, just use the link in the show notes. Links:

Emily will share with us today, two birth stories. The first resulted in a caesarean, the second was a vaginal birth after caesarean. She uses her experiences from the first birth to get very clear on what is important to her having baby number two. Emily shares her decision making around the models of care and then her subsequent relationships with both care providers. She also gives us an insight into her internal evolution through her second pregnancy, because of going through the first birth. 17 Aug 2023 | Jennifer - Two births, discovering the spiritual side of birth. | 01:02:29
I loved recording this episode, as we started to venture into the realm of birth that is often not discussed. What is going on for women at a deeper level when they go through the process of giving birth. Jenn’s first birth started with an induction - and although it was intense, she loved it. During her second pregnancy, she was healthy and well, and was able to experience labour and birth very differently, under the steam of her own oxytocin. She discovered this well of hormones had much to offer - and she helps us to explore why physiological birth must be honoured and strived for, as the benefits to the mother and baby are immense and help them to travel that path beyond. Whilst this is a slightly longer episode, it is well worth a listen. Enjoy the wisdom from this conversation. Links:
26 Jun 2024 | Maryn Green - Birth as a rite of passage and rituals for pregnancy | 00:54:08
Maryn Green has been attending women as a midwife since 2009; first as a licensed midwife and now as a spiritual midwife that helps facilitate the ceremonies of birth and mothering. Maryn is well known for being the founder of the Indie Birth Association and Indie Birth midwifery school, which educates women and midwives all over the world. She has her own podcast, “Taking Back Birth,” that encourages women and midwives to rethink what they have been taught, and re-connect with ancient wisdom and the spiritual journey of birth. She is also the author of the book Indie Birth: A Story of Radical Birth Love in 2019. Maryn has given birth to 10 children and currently lives in Hawai’i. Today we look at how birth is a rite of passage, how we can prepare for birth through ceremony and ritual, and she shares some great insights through her own birth experiences. I truly loved having a conversation about birth that goes beyond the things that can happen, to exploring the greater meaning of birth as a transformational process for the birthing woman and the baby - and the intricate dance between the two. A fresh new perspective. Enjoy dear ones.

12 Jul 2023 | Shelby - 2 Births, the importance of the golden hour | 00:41:26
Shelby shares her story of two births. When having her first baby, as a yoga teacher - people kept affirming that she would likely have a straightforward birth. Her first birth was long. When her baby arrived, she felt dissociated from her new baby. For her second birth, she did some more preparation with the ‘Transform Your Birth,’ course and got herself a doula. She became very clear that the most important part of the birth was meeting and connecting with her baby. This clear focus helped her to adjust to a cesarean. Shelby's experiences remind us that we are not in control - but we can get clear on what is important to us, which can help us to adjust to what unfolds on the day.
04 Dec 2024 | Alexandra - Getting clear on what you want, support, and being ok with whatever happens | 00:35:21
Alexandra felt excited by the challenge of giving birth. She did yoga and the ‘Transform Your Birth' course. Even though she wanted a low intervention birth, she knew she would have to learn to be ok with whatever unfolded on the day. With an induction looming, she did everything to bring this baby on - and it worked. Through the process of getting clear, and communicating to her partner and support team what was important to her, she was able to surrender to the birth and work with her tools to get through what ended up being a fierce labour. Lots of great birth wisdom shared in this episode.

She makes a decision that she wants to get through the process of birthing without the use of the drugs and commits to the practices in order to train her mind. Her and Justin have a good conversation on how he can support her to do this. She is facing induction at 42 weeks and labour starts spontaneously without too much need for help. She goes so deep within herself she doesn’t even think about the drugs. She feels completely calm and focused. Her partner was an amazing support, and this set them both up beautifully for the next stage with their little boy James.

She exercises her capacity to negotiate the stages of induction by giving herself time to see if each stage is enough to kick off her labour. This works really well for her as she only ends up needing the gel on her cervix. Her waters break spontaneously, and she manages to avoid the syntocinon. Her labour ends up progressing quite quickly. She talks about the tens machine and the gas, and how they were useful for her. She had the urge to push, but the midwives suggested it was too early not feeling she could have progressed so quickly. She did progress quickly, and we discuss rate of progress. She finds being on her back was a good position for her. She marvels at how she was able to overcome an episiotomy that gets infected. Sarah’s story reminds us that we can get through things that previously we might have resisted. She finishes with – you’ve got this mamma. We are far more resilient than we realise. Enjoy her story, it has much to teach us.

30 Aug 2023 | Tracey shares some insightful understandings about when and how to use the drugs in labour | 00:34:19
Today I’m going to share with you some important information every woman must know when it comes to choosing to use the pharmacological options in managing labour. They are tools in your tool kit to help manage labour - but you might want to put them in the bottom of the bag as they come at a cost, to the mother and the baby. When women don't have the drugs they often experience a natural high which sets her up beautifully for the next stage. Sometimes however, it can be appropriate - to protect the emotional state of the mother and also the baby. Most of the time we don’t need it. I will help you to know when it might be appropriate. This is important information to know when it comes to making decisions. I also give some great advice for those supporting birthing women - how to get her over the hump, if she is asking for the drugs. Enjoy! Links:

25 Oct 2023 | How birth sets us up for parenting | 00:23:34
Today I’m sharing with you a little presentation on how birth sets you up for parenting. When a baby is born, so is a mother. There are many inner forces that are being activated - and I want to highlight the innate intelligence we have inside of ourselves and start to work towards optimising our physiological response to labour - as there are many benefits on the other side. This is a way of looking at birth that is rarely given any attention. I hope you enjoy it. I would also like to acknowledge that not everyone listening to this podcast, who is having a baby identifies as a woman. I want to extend my care and respect to you - and acknowledge that these changes are indeed happening for you too, and how they manifest is different for everyone. I will however be using female pronouns to honour the age old traditions of birthing. Thanks for listening. Links:

18 Jan 2023 | Kate – Overcoming her fear, Pre-eclampsia, Induction, claiming space to be ready for the induction, avoiding an episiotomy and feeling so proud of herself | 00:43:46
Kate was quite fearful of birth in her early pregnancy and then goes on to study birth deeply which helps shift her mindset. In her later pregnancy she is diagnosed with preeclampsia and needs to face an induction. During the process she is feeling rushed by her medical professionals and locks herself in the bathroom for a couple of hours. By reclaiming her space and doing it when she was ready, allowed her to endure a very long labour without any need for pain relief. She puts on noise cancelling headphones to zone out from the activity in her room. She listens to her own breath which helps her get into the zone. She also asks for the syntocinon to be turned down, so it mimics a normal labour. She talks about not feeling the time, even though it was a long labour, and asked her caregivers to not refer to time. She loved the pushing phase and felt zero pain and avoids an episiotomy. She discusses healing from tearing. She also had a big bleed after the birth – but through all of those things she was just so pleased and proud of herself. She feels it set her up beautifully for parenting. Kate’s story reminds us that we are enough to birth our babies, even when we need help.

06 Sep 2023 | Matt - Supporting women through birth: a Fathers perspective | 00:49:40
This week we have the perspective of a father supporting his wife through two birth experiences. Matt reflects on his journey of stepping up and becoming more proactive in both the birth space and in parenting. He shares that prior to doing our course, he didn’t realise how much of a role he could play in helping Bronte and how she was feeling it was all on her shoulders. This experience shook him into action, which on reflection helped him to grow much quicker into fatherhood. This is a wonderful story of teamwork at its greatest - and when going through some pretty big challenges with the health of their second baby, they were able to get through it together, securely bonded and now able to manage the needs of two beautiful little boys. Matt has much wisdom - and this is an episode that should be shared with all partners of birthing women, so they can start to become familiar with the road ahead. Links:

19 Jun 2024 | Catherine Bell on Birth Mapping, a way of avoiding birth trauma | 00:54:34
I am so excited to bring you Catherine Bell, the developer of the Birth Mapping process. Decision making during pregnancy and birth will have the most profound and significant influence on how your birth unfolds. The biggest mistake people make during pregnancy and birth is completely handing over the decision making process to their carers. Your job is to step up, understand the landscape, and decide what your needs are in any given situation from pregnancy, birth and after the baby arrives. There are many potential things that can happen, by mapping your chosen options, you are more likely to be able to adapt to the many paths that this experience can take a birthing family. Catherine will help us to understand how to do this through her PHD research on birth mapping. She also brings to us some of the recommendations from the recent release of NSW Birth Trauma report. From Catherine’s research, she can see that this process can contribute to the prevention of birth trauma. This is a ‘must listen,’ episode for all pregnant women. You will find Catherine’s contact details in the show notes below this episode.
Catherine Bell is a Mother, consumer advocate, and Master of Science Communication about to complete her PhD evaluating her book, The Birth Map.
