05 Apr 2022Ultra-Running Nutrition is NOT Intuitive with Julie Shobe | S3E501:01:53

Send us a text

Did you know that 30-50% of ultra-runners struggle with gastrointestinal distress? Have you ever wondered why you felt nauseous on a long run or during a race? Julie Shobe, a nutritionist for beginner ultra-runners, tells us WHY we might be feeling nauseous and HOW to combat GI issues during training and on race day! Listen to the episode to learn more!

How to get started with better nutrition according to Julie:

AVOID DEHYDRATION: drink 14oz of water every hour and 250mg of sodium every hour (or500mg of sodium for every 1L of water)

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BODY TO EAT WHILE RUNNING:
1. Start with carbs and find your baseline (how many g of carbs do you eat every hour?)
2. Slowly increase your carb intake (eat 10g of carbs more than you do every hour until you get to 60g of carbs every hour)
3. Add sodium and protein

WHAT TO EAT DURING A LONG RUN: Eat a variety of foods high in carbs and protein. Avoid food with high fat. Here are some ideas
-Quesadilla
-PB&J
-Pizza
-Cheese stick
-Nuts
-Protein bar
-Protein shake

HOW TO EAT OFF OF THE TRAIL:
-60% carbs
-Then protein
-Then fruits and veggies
-Fat will just find its way in there!

CAFFEINE EQUATION:
Body Weight in Kilograms x 9 = __________mg of Caffeine intake per 24 hours.

WHY WE GET NASEOUS WHEN WE RUN:
-Under fueling
-Stomach "falls asleep"
-Not enough salt
-Not enough protein
-Not enough fluid
-Waiting too long to start eating

OTHER TAKEAWAYS:
-Eat protein during your long runs so it can start to rebuild and strengthen your muscles
-Carbs = energy. Protein = rebuild/recovery. Fat = hormones.
-Practice running and eating through the night! (12am-5am is the hardest!)
-Intermittent fasting/running fasted is proven to show an increase in cortisol levels in female athletes
-Peeing consistently on a run MIGHT be a sign that you are not getting enough electrolytes
-CARBS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!

"I was NOT born that way" is how Joe responded when we asked how he got into ultra-running. In fact, Joe was often picked last in gym class. He has struggled with bouts of major anxiety and depression and even was addicted to Adderall for a time. Joe decided it was time to get his life together and he started by lifting weights.

Weightlifting turned into Spartan races, which turned into triathlons (including an ULTRA triathlon) which ultimately turned into ultra-running.

Some things you'll learn in this episode:

-How to add weightlifting and speed training into your routine
-How to find balance between work/life/training
-The importance of sleep
-Where to find the will to keep moving forward when things get tough
-The importance of setting big goals/stretching yourself

Some episode takeaways/power quotes:

-You can do anything in life, but you can't do everything
-The suffering only stops when you cover the distance
-Pacers are LIFE SAVERS
-Obsession is a gift. Learn to control it.
-Consistency is key

Marc Callister (aka Melody's dad!) used to say "the only time you'll ever see me running is if I'm running to the kitchen!" He never thought he'd run a 5k...let alone an ultra! Listen to Marc's story to here how he went from couch to 50k in only 3years!

-A treadmill is a great tool to improve your running form
-Add strides to your easy runs (30sec fun fast runs)
-Do speedwork! Trail runners forget how important this is

09 May 2023Running 50 Miles on a Stress Fracture with BJ Herndon | S4E1901:13:37

Send us a text

BJ got into running when he stepped on the scale for the first time in years and realized he was over 200pounds. After losing 40lbs in 4 months, he stepped up his running game and ran his first 50mile race this year! Here's the crazy thing...He ran the whole race on a stress fracture!

BJ says that the greatest lesson he has learned from ultrarunning is "who you are is not what you do." It took a stress fracture to humble him, and even thoug he didn't podium his first 50 (like he was hoping to), just finishing was well worth it as he grew tremendously as a person.

BJ Herndon works for "Arkansas Better Dads" and has a wife and two daughters. He loves all things outdoors, and leads worship at a weekly Young Adult night service.

BJ's advice for a first time 100 mile racer:
-Don't do too much running on pavement (this is how he fractured his tibia!)
-Sign up for an ultra and just commit to it

Jeremy's advice for a first time 100 mile racer:
-If you're thinking about signing up for a 100 mile race, stop thinking about it and DO IT!
-Expect feelings of doubt, and trust that if you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you'll make it.
-Quitting is more painful than pushing through and finishing

Welcome to episode 2 of The Pillars of Ultrarunning! In this episode, Melody and Jacob share what they know about strength and mobility (aka, the toppings of your pizza!) Buckle up because this episode is chock-full of information. Don't hesitate to reach out to us on our Instagram or send us an e-mail if you have any questions!

Link to Melody's free strength guide for runners:
https://melodybateman.biz/free-downloads-new/

Strength Training Guidelines (mentioned in the podcast):

  • What parts of the body should I be focusing on for cross training?
    • Specifics: Glutes/Hips, Core, ankles and feet, Single leg, Plyometrics
      • Glutes/hips: to stabilize your pelvis.
      • Core: protects your back.
      • Ankles and feet: Runners need a strong base of support.
      • Single leg: running is a unilateral sport!
      • Plyometrics: plyometrics increase your number of fast-twitch muscles which helps improve your sprinting and speed ability.
    • Lower body: calves, hamstrings, quads
      • Calves: Our calves push off the ground when we are running
      • Hamstrings/quads: The stronger your hamstrings and quads are, the faster and less injury prone you’ll be.
    • Upper body: arms (biceps/triceps), shoulders (deltoids, rotator cuff muscles), chest (pecs), and upper back (lats, traps, rhomboids)
      • Upper Body: upper body is often neglected by runners, but is SO important, because it improves your running posture, and helps prevent fatigue and also improves your endurance. The more aligned and strong your WHOLE body is, the more efficient and powerful you’ll be as a runner.

In this episode, we talk A LOT about strength training for a 100 mile race, we emphasize the importance of being an ATHLETE, not just a runner, and we talk about what it's like to run a 100 mile race WITH someone. Bryan Ellis has some great insights as he's completed many adventure runs, two 100s, and countless obstacle course races. 20 Feb 2024The Front Porch 100 - A Self-Supported 100 Mile Race w/ Heath Forbush |S5E301:02:37

Send us a text

Heath shares his journey of running his first 100-mile race. He talks about his motivation to start ultra running and the challenges he faced during his training. Heath also discusses his first attempt at a 100-mile race and the decision to drop out due to weather conditions. He then shares how he planned his own 100-mile race and the experience of completing it. Heath shares his experience of planning and completing the Front Porch 100, a self-supported 100-mile race that started and ended at his front door. Despite challenges with weather and route changes, Heath persevered and finished the race with the support of his family and dog. He reflects on the lessons he learned from ultra running, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and moving forward in both running and life.

Takeaways

  • Training for an ultra race requires a well-thought-out plan that includes a mix of long runs, tempo runs, and rest days.
  • It's important to listen to your body and make adjustments to your training as needed to prevent injuries.
  • Planning your own race can be a challenging but rewarding experience, allowing you to set your own goals and push your limits. Perseverance and moving forward are key in both running and life.
  • The finish line of an ultra race may not always be the most significant moment; it's the little wins and moments throughout the race that hold meaning.
  • Self-supported races require careful planning and flexibility to adapt to unexpected challenges.
  • Connecting with the running community can provide support and inspiration.

POUR: Pillar of Ultra Running

Jacob Bateman and Kilian Korth discuss the importance of speed work in ultra running, particularly for those training for their first hundred-mile race. They delve into how speed work can enhance performance, the structure of training plans, and various types of speed workouts.

The conversation also highlights the mental benefits of incorporating speed work into training, emphasizing its role in preventing burnout and maintaining motivation.

To close things out Kilian challenges the conventional notion of needing a profound 'why' to motivate runners, advocating instead for practical strategies to navigate the mental challenges of endurance events.
