Keely and Corrine chat about all of the races that happened over the weekend and recent news around maternal health and women’s sports.  Then they deep dive into the Western States 100 and how it played out for Keely. Keely talks about her training leading up to the race, how she felt going in, and how she channeled calmness.  She talks us through the race, discussing the insane snow, amazing competition, attempting to run her own race, and troubleshooting on the fly.  Then we talk through her accidental trip at mile 80 that ended in a rather chaotic event, where she dislocated her shoulder, struggled to get it back in, and ultimately dropped from the race.  We discuss how hard DNFs are, even when they make sense, and her plans for the future.

Peyton Thomas is an ultrarunner, advocate, and postdoctoral research associate at CU Boulder.

She then obtained her PhD from the University of British Columbia in exercise physiology with an emphasis on the respiratory system focusing on sex and age and is now at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota as a research fellow.    In this interview we dive into some of her early work on the development of the super shoe, think Nike 4%, talk about her Olympic career and the transition to full-time research candidate and mother, and finally dive into her latest work with a deep dive into sports bras.

First, they talk through the mental side of dropping out of or choosing not to start a race, how to give yourself some grace, and when to pull the plug.  Whether you choose to drop at mile 5 or mile 95 of a one hundred mile race, your decision is valid and we must learn to be okay with them. In Episode 72, we are joined by Dr. Emily Kraus, a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford Children's Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center. She is trained in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) sports medicine and is also the director of the FASTR program. FASTR stands for Female Athlete Science and Translational Research, which is dedicated to closing the gender gap in sports science research. The program emphasizes early identification and interventions to prevent injury and optimize performance in female athletes.

 

During the episode, we discuss Dr. Kraus's journey to becoming a physician who focuses on female athlete health. We also talk about how the lack of female representation in sports medicine motivated her to pursue this career. We explore how increasing female representation in sports medicine can positively impact athletes. 

 

Dr. Kraus shares how working as both a clinician and scientist allows her to better understand female athletes and apply findings in the clinic. We delve into coaching female athletes to return to sport from low energy availability and bone stress injuries and how to balance volume and load while also ensuring the athlete's health and safety.
