Things could have been so much easier if I just knew what I know now.

This is like so many things in life, you learn the lesson too late. But learning the lesson to pass on to others - its never too late for that.

Its just will they listen? Or ignore it like you did?

Training to be an electrician can be harder then actually doing the job. Its a test to see if you have what it takes.

A test to see if you can make it, if your the type of person who likes a challenge, you will be successful and become a qualified electrician, and face new challenges every day.

Then and only then will you understand what it takes to be an electrician.

Some apprentices don't make it to the end. For a number of reasons, but if your going to start an apprentice as an electrician - finish it.

EICR, PAT Testing, Periodic Tests, Continuity..... The list goes ON and ON

Is it an obsession for electricians to test everything?

Maybe..... Its drilled into you at college so much. Isn't it over the top the amount of testing electricians do?

There must be a reason for all this testing and safe isolation, but what is it?

When you understand the reason you do something, your more likely to do it.

When you don't completely understand why, you may cut a few corners and not bother. Yeah you may get away with it a couple of times.

It only takes that one time for something to go wrong, for a fire to start and lives to be lost.

After that you will make a point of testing everything twice - If you are alive to get another chance.

Ever seen your own tools at a car boot sale? 

This has got to be where the stolen tools from all the van theft crime that's going on. 

I really don't know how the thieves sleep at night with the crime career they have chosen. 

Like many other tradespeople, I have been a victim of van theft. 

Although I have upgraded the van security after the 1st time. 

There are tried and tested methods to keeping your van secure, van deadlocks are one of the things I will always put on my vans from now on.

What ever you career path takes you down it all starts off with becoming an electrician.

To be able to advance in the industry you need to know the basics and have the qualifications as proof to be able to turn it all into a business.

if you feel you are confident to do the job, but don't have the qualifications to back it up, there is no way you can legally sign the work off for the customers insurance.

There is no way around it, you need to get those bits of paper.

An interesting thing I discovered for electricians who have worked in the trade all their like but have now qualifications - there is an option in there for you too.

If someone describes you as a cheap electrician - You're not charging enough. 

Consider all the outgoings you have, all the time and effort it took you to be a good electrician - not a cheap one.

Have Electricians over the years got Better or Worse?

I believe there to be 3 types of electricians, the old boys who started out on 16th edition.

The mature sparks who did a modern day apprentice or collage course and the young blood.

The electricians or who training today didn't have to go through the same training as an electrician did in the 80s. I think that shows with some of the electricians these days.

There is only one day to become a good electrician these days in my opinion. This I mention in the podcast.

Its something all electricians can do still if they can be bothered.

Rubbish Electricians actually get away with murder!

With the trades industry full of tradesmen who do a bad job and actually do rip a customer off, How do they actually get away with it?

Is it the fault of the dogey builder or is the customer to blame?

To be able to stop these rouge traders there are a few things we can do, after all its the good trade people who have the job of sorting all the mess out.

Lets be honest, its a lot easier to do a job from the beginning than turn up at the end and try and make it safe - Sometimes by then it too late and has to all come out.

The better the equipment, the better the job.

Getting a call saying that the sockets you installed don't work, doesn't look good on you.

As an electrician you can go for the most expensive materials, this doesn't always mean that it's not going to fail!

It's happened to me with a huge brand before.

You can't really say a brand is the best until you have used it and installed it yourself.

Just because the brand of material has been around for a long time, doesn't necessarily mean it's the best.
