12 Mar 2021Standing up to Madonna. Kevin Stea & His Blond Ambition01:32:15

Kevin Alexander Stea (born October 17, 1969) is an American dancer, choreographer, actor, singer, director and model. He has worked as a dancer and choreographer with a number of high-profile artists, including MadonnaLady Gaga and Michael Jackson, and has appeared in several movies and television shows

Stea was an assistant choreographer and dance captain for Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour in 1990, and subsequently appeared in the 1991 documentary film Madonna: Truth or Dare.[1][2][3] In January 1992, along with fellow dancers Oliver Crumes and Gabriel Trupin, Stea filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court against Madonna's production company Boy Toy Inc, Miramax Films and Propaganda Films, alleging fraud and invasion of privacy as a result of the documentary.[4][5][6][7][8] Because of the international notoriety of Madonna, the suit became a pervasive media topic with Stea discussed in the news and appearing on talk shows such as Maury Povich.[9] After more than two years of litigation, the suit was withdrawn in October 1994 and an undisclosed settlement was reached.[10]

While the suit made its way through the courts, Stea went on to lay out a solid foundation for his professional career: appearing in the role of Swifty The Rake in the Disney musical Newsies, touring in the Glorious Revolution tour with Japanese pop-star Seiko Matsuda, and working with Michael Jackson by appearing in the iconic MTV 10th Anniversary live performance of Will You Be There 1991, and then going on to serve as the associate choreographer for the official videos Black or White and Blood on the Dance Floor.

01 Nov 2020True Blue - A Retro Review of Madonna’s Best Album?01:13:25

True Blue is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on June 30, 1986, by Sire Records. She co-wrote and produced the entire album with Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard. True Blue deals with her visions of love, work, dreams as well as disappointments, and was inspired by her then husband Sean Penn, to whom Madonna dedicated the album. Musically, the songs on the album took a different direction from her previous endeavours, incorporating classical music in order to engage an older audience who had been skeptical of her music.

The album features instrumentation from acoustic guitars, drums, synthesizers and Cuban musical instruments. The topic for the songs range from love, freedom, and in the case of "Papa Don't Preach", social issues like teenage pregnancy. After its release, True Blue received critical acclaim, with music critics who complimented the album as the archetype of the late 1980s and early 1990s pop albums. They also praised the fact that Madonna's voice sounded stronger than it did on her previous efforts, while commending Madonna's skills as a singer, songwriter and entertainer.

True Blue was an immediate global success, reaching number one in then record-breaking 28 countries across the world, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. It spent 34 consecutive weeks at the top of the European Top 100 Albums chart, longer than any other album in history. It became the world's top-selling album of 1986, as well as the best-selling album of the 1980s by a female artist. With estimated sales of over 25 million copies worldwide, True Blue remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. Five singles released from the album—"Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open Your Heart", and "La Isla Bonita"—all reached number one on either the US Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Singles Chart.

The album was promoted on Madonna's second concert tour, 1987's Who's That Girl World Tour, which visited cities in North America, Europe and Asia. True Blue is credited as being the album which established Madonna's position as the biggest female artist of the 1980s, rivaling male musicians like Michael Jackson and Prince. The album's singles and their accompanying music videos have sparked debates among scholars and social groups. She became the first female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards in recognition of her impact on popular culture. The album also gave her first appearance on the Guinness Book of World Records.

07 Nov 2023Madonna Celebration Hits Sweden - REVIEW00:24:24

The show’s high point arrives courtesy of an achingly beautiful rendition of 1986’s “Live to Tell”, during which Madonna floats above our heads as the screens fill with images of the many talented gay men lost to the Aids epidemic, including Keith Haring and Martin Burgoyne. These were her dear friends – and as Mary Gabriel’s huge new biography of Madonna attests, their deaths devastated her. It is a deeply moving acknowledgement of the community in which she learned her signature moves, the same community that continues to hold her aloft today. She gets into a boxing ring to deliver “Erotica” (1992) – reminding us that the freedom to choose who we love was a real fight. It’s a shame so few young people appear to be in the audience tonight because this is a show that proves Madonna still matters.

28 Oct 2023Has Nana Mouskouri Outdone Madonna?00:10:03

Queen of Pop Madonna seems to be unreachable when it comes to music sales.

The iconic American singer, who is currently touring the world on her Celebration Tour, has renewed her record-breaking status as the biggest-selling female recording artist.

Madonna, 65, said during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last year that she had sold over 400 million records – albums, singles and digital – during her career.

While precise sales figures are difficult to obtain, it’s widely acknowledged that only The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson have sold more records worldwide, making Madonna the best-selling female singer.

24 Mar 2021HIStory: A Retro Review of Michael Jackson’s Final Great Work.01:43:27

Learn more about Pez's book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Story-HIStory-Pez-Jax/dp/0993178065

HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I is the ninth studio album by American singer Michael Jackson, released on June 20, 1995. It was the fifth Jackson album released through Epic Records, and the first on his label MJJ Productions. It comprises two discs: HIStory Begins, a greatest hits compilation, and HIStory Continues, comprising new material written and produced by Jackson and collaborators. The album includes appearances by Janet JacksonShaquille O'NealSlash and the Notorious B.I.G. The genres span R&Bpophip hop, elements of hard rock and funk rock. The themes include environmental awarenessisolationgreedsuicideinjustice, and Jackson's conflicts and common-ground with the media.

Starting in the late 1980s, Jackson and the tabloid press had a difficult relationship. In 1993, the relationship between Jackson and the press collapsed when he was accused of child sexual abuse. Although he was not charged, Jackson was subject to intense media scrutiny while the criminal investigation took place. Several of the album's 15 new songs pertain to the child sexual abuse allegations made against him in 1993 and Jackson's perceived mistreatment by the media, mainly the tabloids. Because of this, HIStory has been described as Jackson's most "personal" album.

HIStory debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, among nineteen other countries. Six singles were released, including the protest songs "Earth Song" and "They Don't Care About Us". "Scream", a duet between Jackson and his sister Janet, became the first song to debut in the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number five. "You Are Not Alone" was the first song in history to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100; it was Jackson's final number-one single on that chart. Though the album received generally positive reviews, the lyrics of "They Don't Care About Us" drew accusations of antisemitism, to which Jackson responded that the lines had been misinterpreted and replaced them on later pressings.

Jackson embarked on the HIStory World Tour, which grossed $165 million (equivalent to $268 million in 2019), making it the highest-grossing solo concert tour of the 1990s. It was Jackson's third and final concert tour as a solo artist. The album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time, and the best-selling multi-disc album. In August 2018, it was certified 8× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was nominated for five Grammy Awards at the 1996 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, winning Best Music Video – Short Form for "Scream". Jackson won an American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist at the 1996 American Music Awards.

22 Nov 2020Like a Prayer - A Retro Review01:07:35

Like a Prayer is the fourth studio album by American singer and songwriter Madonna, released on March 21, 1989, by Sire Records. Madonna worked with Stephen BrayPatrick Leonard, and Prince on the album while co-writing and co-producing all the songs. Her most introspective release at the time, Like a Prayer has been described as a confessional record. Madonna described the album as a collection of songs "about my mother, my father, and bonds with my family." The album was dedicated to Madonna's mother, who died when she was young.

The album uses live instrumentation and incorporates elements of dancefunkgospel, and soul into a more general pop style. Madonna drew from her Catholic upbringing, as seen on the album's title track, which was also released as its lead single. The lyrics deal with themes from Madonna's childhood and adolescence, such as the death of her mother in "Promise to Try", the importance of family in "Keep It Together", and her relationship with her father in "Oh Father". Madonna also preaches female empowerment in "Express Yourself".

Like a Prayer received universal acclaim, with Rolling Stone hailing it as "close to art as pop music gets." Commercially, the album was an international success, reaching the top of the charts in multiple territories, and was certified quadruple platinum in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America. Six singles were released from the album: the title track, "Express Yourself", "Cherish", "Oh Father", "Dear Jessie", and "Keep It Together". "Like a Prayer" became Madonna's seventh number-one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, while "Express Yourself" and "Cherish" peaked at number two and "Keep It Together" became a top-ten hit. Worldwide, the album has sold over 15 million copies.

With the singles' accompanying music videos, Madonna furthered her creativity and became known as a leading figure in the format. The music video for "Like a Prayer" was a lightning rod for religious controversy, using Catholic iconography such as stigmata and burning crosses, and a dream about making love to a saint, leading the Vatican to condemn the video and causing Pepsi to cancel Madonna's sponsorship contract. The video for "Express Yourself" was the most expensive video at its release. Like a Prayer preceded Madonna's ground-breaking Blond Ambition World Tour. At the end of the 1980s, following the release of the album, Madonna was named "Artist of the Decade" by several publications.

30 Aug 2023Celine Dion’s Fans Speak Up00:31:11

How do fans cope when an idol faces crisis?

Celine Dion's diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome has brought public attention to the rare neurological disorder, which affects roughly one or two out of every million people.

"While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having. Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to," the singer said in an Instagram video.

People with stiff-person syndrome often experience rigidity in their torso and limbs, as well as severe muscle spasms that can cause them to fall down. The spasms can occur at random or be triggered by certain stimuli, including loud noises, touch and emotional distress.

Dr. Richard Nowak, an assistant neurology professor at the Yale School of Medicine, said the condition "has a range of severity, from quite mild — easily managed with a little bit of medication — to folks that are quite severe that can be, frankly, quite disabled from it."

Stiff-person syndrome overall disrupts the normal pathways of communication between the brain and the muscles.

"There’s a massive firing that’s occurring from the central nervous system, down through the spinal cord, down through the nerves as they plug into the muscles, and it’s causing them to become rigid or go into spasm, which equals the stiffness," Nowak said.

In most but not all cases, people with stiff-person syndrome have elevated levels of antibodies that target a particular protein involved in the process of controlling muscle function. Doctors consider these patients to have an autoimmune condition.

17 Jan 2021Enjoy Yourself - A Retro Review of a PWL Classic00:25:22

Enjoy Yourself is the second studio album by Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue, released on 9 October 1989 by Pete Waterman Entertainment (PWE) and Mushroom Records. In the United States, it was released in 1990 by Geffen Records. Following the success of her self-titled debut album, Minogue reunited with the producers Stock Aitken Waterman, who produced and wrote nine of the album's ten tracks, in London in February 1989. The recording sessions took place there from February until July, coinciding with Minogue filming her first feature film The Delinquents.

Enjoy Yourself is a bubblegum popdance-pop, and disco album that discusses mainly romantic relationships. It received mixed reviews from music critics, who criticised its similarity with her debut release. In the United Kingdom, it debuted at number one with pre-sales of over 600,000 copies and became the sixth best-selling album of 1989. The album was certified four times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in January 1990. It also peaked in the top ten in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Australia and New Zealand. It failed to find an audience in the United States, and Minogue was dropped as an act by Geffen Records.

Four singles were released from the album, including UK chart-toppers "Hand on Your Heart" and "Tears on My Pillow". Two other singles, "Wouldn't Change a Thing" and "Never Too Late" peaked in the top five. All four peaked in the top twenty in Australia and Ireland. The album was promoted further through Minogue's first and second concert tours, Disco in Dream (1989) and the Enjoy Yourself Tour (1990), which traveled to Australia, Britain and Asia. The album was re-issued in the United Kingdom for the first time in 2015, when it returned to the UK Albums Chart.

Kylie Minogue is the fifth studio album to be recorded by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. It was released in the United Kingdom on 19 September 1994 by Deconstruction, and in Australia by Mushroom Records. After leaving Pete Waterman Entertainment, Minogue wanted to establish credibility for herself and signed with independent label Deconstruction in early 1993. Minogue became involved with a diverse group of collaborators in order to experiment with different sounds. After unsuccessful sessions with Saint Etienne and The Rapino Brothers, Minogue went on to collaborate with new producers including Brothers in RhythmM PeopleFarley & Heller, and Jimmy Harry.

Musically, Kylie Minogue is a dance-pop album that contains elements of electronic danceR&B and adult contemporary music. Minogue showcases her voice range in the midtempo tracks, with lyrics about love, seduction, womanhood, and enjoyment of lifeMusic critics praised the production and Minogue's vocals, deeming it the start of a new phase of her career. It experienced moderate success worldwide, peaked in the top 5 in the United Kingdom and Australia, and was certified gold in both countries. The album also attaining top 40 positions in Sweden, Switzerland, and Scotland. Minogue received three nominations at the ARIA Music Awards of 1995 as a result of her work on Kylie Minogue, winning Best Video for "Put Yourself In My Place".

To promote the album, a limited coffee-table book shot by Ellen von Unwerth was released to highfliers. Three singles were released—"Confide in Me", "Put Yourself in My Place", and "Where Is the Feeling?"—all of which peaked inside the top 20 in the UK, while the former two also reached top 20 in Australia. The promotional process was delayed several times due to highly popular film projects that Minogue was involved with during the time. The album was re-issued in Europe in 2018, when it returned to the UK Albums Chart and Scottish Albums Chart.

MDNA is the twelfth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on March 23, 2012, by Interscope Records. The album was conceived while the singer was busy throughout 2011 with filming her directorial venture, W.E. Madonna started the recording in July 2011 and collaborated with a variety of producers such as Alle BenassiBenny Benassi, Demolition Crew, Free School, Michael Malih, Indiigo, William Orbit, and Martin Solveig, the last two serving as primary producers of the record.

The recording process was smooth although Madonna found difficulty working with Benny Benassi who did not speak fluent English and had to use his cousin Alle Benassi as interpreter. A dance-popelectropopelectro houseEurodanceEDM and Euro house record, MDNA consists of upbeat songs which lyrically explore themes of partying, love for music, infatuation, as well as heartbreak, revenge and separation. The album's title is a triple entendre and its allusion to MDMA drew negative reception from anti-drug groups.

MDNA was Madonna's first release under the 360 deal she had signed with Live Nation in 2007 and the three-album deal with Interscope in 2012. The record received promotion from Madonna's performance at Super Bowl XLVI halftime show as well as The MDNA Tour, the latter becoming one of the highest-grossing tours of all time. Four singles were released—"Give Me All Your Luvin'", "Girl Gone Wild", "Masterpiece" and "Turn Up the Radio". Its first single reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100, thereby extending Madonna's record as the artist with the most top-ten singles in that chart's history.

Music critics were ambivalent towards the album. MDNA topped the record charts in most musical markets. Madonna set a new record for the most number-one albums by a solo artist in Australia and the United Kingdom. MDNA was the twelfth best-selling album of 2012 globally, and went on to sell two million copies.

15 Nov 2020Kylie - A Retro Review of Her First Album00:14:39

Kylie is the debut studio album by Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue, released on 4 July 1988 by Mushroom Records. Minogue had established herself as a child actress before signing to the record label in early 1987. The success of her debut single, "Locomotion", resulted in her working with Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who produced the album and wrote nine of its ten tracks. Their recording sessions, which started in September 1987 and took place in London and Melbourne, coincided with Minogue filming for the soap opera Neighbours.

Musically, Kylie is a bubblegum pop and dance-pop album. It received mixed reviews from contemporary music critics who criticized its dated production. It was a commercial success, peaking at number one in the United Kingdom for six weeks and becoming the best-selling album of 1988. It is her only number-one album in New Zealand, while peaking at number two in her native Australia. In the United States, it was certified gold for selling over 500,000 copies. Kylie was certified six times platinum in the United Kingdom and has sold over five million copies worldwide.

To promote Kylie, "I Should Be So Lucky" was released as the first single by the newly founded PWL Records in late December 1987. It reached number one in Australia and the United Kingdom, the first for any artist. The subsequent singles—"Got to Be Certain", the re-recorded "The Loco-Motion", and "Je ne sais pas pourquoi" all peaked in the top two on the UK Singles Chart. "It's No Secret" was her third top-forty single on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Turn It into Love" was released exclusively in Japan. Kylie was re-issued in 1988 as The Kylie Collection, and in 2015 when it returned to the UK Albums Chart.

The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears is a 2021 documentary television film, directed by Samantha Stark and produced by Jason Stallman, Sam Dolnick, and Stephanie Priess. The film revolves around the career of American entertainer Britney Spears, her celebrity and popularity within American culture, and the conservatorship that she has been living under since 2008, which has sparked the fan-driven "#FreeBritney" movement.[1] Released on February 5, 2021 as an edition of The New York Times Presents on FX and FX on Hulu, the documentary explores Spears's rise to fame as a pop star, her treatment by the paparazzi, her highly publicized breakdown in 2007 and her subsequent court-mandated conservatorship overseen by her father Jamie Spears. Shortly after the documentary aired, a probate judge dismissed objections by Jamie regarding the co-conservatorship arrangement.
