In 2008 Zara finished directing and producing an adoption documentary entitled “ROOTS: UNKNOWN” This educational and informative film focuses on the emotional influence adoption has on the adoptee and their families. Her book, ‘Mother Me’ is about Zara’s personal journey to motherhood from an adoptee’s point of view. ‘Mother Me’ was published by BAAF (British Association for Adoption and Fostering) in the UK and was released on March 3rd 2008. This is an intensely personal and compelling memoir in which Zara describes her feelings  as an adopted person and explores her relationships with her adoptive and birthmothers, and invites the reader to join her in her own journey to becoming a Mother. “It seems that birthing my children was also a birth for my whole self.”

24 Nov 2022Infinite Love With Birth Mother Suzanne Asha Smith And Adoptee Cynthia Stone00:52:27

Love isn't finite. But what does that even mean? In a fantastic first for Thriving Adoptees an adoptee and her birth mother talk about this and much more in this profound conversation. You're going to love this one. It was released on 24th November 2022, the first Thanksgiving day that Cynthia has spent with both her adoptive mom and birth mom.

Here's a  bit about Cynthia - who was adopted as a child - from her website:

I grew up in southeast Idaho, just outside the town of Idaho Falls. From as far back as I can remember, I loved books and reading, and wrote my first short story (about a fairy being born in a tulip) when I was around six years old—pretty much as soon as I could write. My second grade teacher, Mrs. Widdison, told me that I'd be an author some day, and I believed her. I kept writing stories all through grade school, most of them wildly fantastical musings on supernatural beings or creatures, none of which ever won the annual short story competition where the writer got to meet Kenneth Thomasma, the author of one of my very favorite books, Naya Nuki. I learned early on that if you wanted to win the writing contest, you should write stories about that time your parents got their car stuck in the snow on the side of a mountain just before dark. You should not write about a group of unicorns fighting to take over an island from an alien invasion. I kept writing about unicorns anyway

The How & The Why is her novel about adoption...

Cassandra McMurtrey has the best parents a girl could ask for. They’ve given Cass a life she wouldn’t trade for the world. She has everything she needs—except maybe the one thing she wants. Like, to know who she is. Where she came from. Questions her adoptive parents can’t answer, no matter how much they love her.

Do you want to grow? Listen in as transracial adoptees Cosette and Zoe share what helped - and continues to help them - grow so they can overcome adversity and challenges.

Here's more about today's guests from their website:

My name is Cosette Eisenhauer. I am a 21-year-old transracial adoptee from Guangdong, China. I am going into my senior year at the University of Texas in Arlington. I am studying Social Work and my hope is to work with adoption and foster care or work in the legislative area to help pass and create new laws that might help adoptees, while still advocating for adoptees. My mom and dad are both Caucasian and I have a younger brother who is adopted from Dalian, China. I am also engaged right now and actively planning a wedding! (Lol fun times)

I'm Zoe (she/her) and I am a 22-year-old transracial adoptee from China! I am a senior in college in Ohio and I am studying psychology, math and Chinese. I just finished my year-long research project for my senior year regarding adoption, and hope to do adoption-related work post-college (among some other fun things!). You can find my work at www.overlookedadoptees.org. I also worked on some adoption-related projects in the summer of 2022. I have a single mom and a younger sister who is also adopted.

30 Nov 2022Absorbing Identity Shock01:20:08

Many of us adoptees struggle with identity. Christiana became Christina at 8. All of a sudden she was in a new country, in a new continent, with a new culture and her new name. Listen in as we unpack what she's learned about absorbing the most extreme identity shock we've ever discussed on this podcast.

Christina Rickardsson was born in 1983 as Christiana Mara Coelho in Brazil in a town called Diamantina (Minas Gerais), where she lived with her mother in a cave. When Christina was around five years old they were kicked out of their home (their cave) and ended up having to move to the streets of a São Paulo, where Christina begged for food and money, and where she was subjected to several physical and psychological abuses. At the age of seven she was taken to an orphanage together with her youngest brother, and when Christina was eight years old they were adopted (against Christina’s and Christina’s mother’s will) and moved to Vindeln, a village located in the north of Sweden in a region called Västerbotten.

Christina’s life changed when she moved to Sweden, but even though she was finally in a safe place, adapting to new country was not easy. There were several culture-clashes and in the beginning it was hard for her to feel at home because everything around her was new: the food, the nature, the people, and also the language spoken around her. Little by little Christiana became Christina, and this change helped her to adapt to the Swedish lifestyle.

Christina wants her book to help increase people’s understanding about differences, prejudice and cultural conflicts, helping to promote dialogue, tolerance towards more open societies. She wants her own experience to become an example of how important it is to secure children’s rights, with Sweden and Brazil and a starting point.

Christina wants her story to inspire governments, companies, organizations and people to work together effectively in multicultural settings.

There are currently about seven million street children in Brazil, and Christina believes it is important to draw attention not only to the situation they are in, but also to the fact that these children have no voice of their own. The writer wants to help change this reality so that all children can live in a society where they can have a safe and happy childhood, and where they contribute to their own society when they become adults.

08 Aug 2022Helping Our Kids To See Their Iron Clad Value With Mark Andrews01:02:22

A low sense of self worth can plague adoptees. So how do we make our kids see their iron clad value? To be comfortable in their own skins? How does being a transracial adoptee play out in this issue which is in fact all about identity? What do we need to do to help our kids with this? Adoptive dad, counselor and professor Dr Mark Andrews shares his empowering answers to these tricky questions.

Here's a bit about Mark from his website:

"My own experience as an adoptive parent since 1994 has also reinforced my belief in the need for increased pre- and post-placement support and education for parents.  Like all adoptive parents, much of my and my wife’s experience was trial and error—especially in that we had not been parents previously.

I have learned a lot over the past three decades!  I have “walked the walk” of experiencing both the mountains and valleys (and everything in-between) of the adoptive parent life.

It is my passion to pass on what I’ve learned to other adoptive and foster parents.  Thus, in 2018 I concluded my time working in the mental health field to begin Adoptive Family Resources (AFR).  AFR is an initiative to provide support, resources and ongoing training for adoptive and foster parents in both the pre- and post-adoptive periods."

08 Nov 2021Talking To Children About Adoption With Julie Wells Executive Director00:43:42

Here's a bit about Julie and her agency from their website:

Julie VanHoose-Wells has worked at Greater Love Adoption Decision, Inc (GLAD) since 1997. She began as a Case Manager and became the Executive Director in 2014. Julie’s parents, Rick and Nancy VanHoose, founded GLAD after their own adoption experience. Julie waited 9 years to become a big sister, which was like “dog years” for an only child. The whole family celebrated the gift of adoption when Julie’s brother, Jeron, was placed with the family.

As the agency grew, Rick and Nancy housed many young women who had been kicked out from their homes or just felt uncomfortable living in their hometowns while pregnant. Living with women who were pregnant, sometimes afraid, and considering adoption was a powerful experience for Julie as an adolescent. She saw many of these women as “big sisters” and enjoyed spending time with them. She also witnessed the agony that they experienced when trying to consider what was best for their baby. This was a type of education that could not come from any textbook. This was an up-close, personal look into many unique adoptions and it developed a love and deep concern for all people who are touched by adoption.

In 1995, Julie graduated from the University of Evansville with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She chose to further her education at the University of Southern Indiana, and graduated in 1997 with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Julie is a Licensed Social Worker in the State of Indiana. She has been trained in Play Therapy and Trauma Informed Care. Julie is able to provide individual, family and group therapies. Her passion is to work with women who have suffered traumas and have encountered crisis. In addition to working in adoption, Julie has worked periodically as a Psychiatric Mental Health Therapist at the Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center, which is the children’s division of the Indiana State Hospital. As a therapist, Julie worked to provide mental health services to children who received inpatient care for approximately 8 months while providing family therapy to re-stabilize the home. Julie has been a volunteer with EPCC since 1999, and by participating on the Patient Right’s Committee since 2016.

GLAD has been meeting the immediate need since 1985. We are licensed by the State of Indiana and we have uniquely qualified professionals to help you decide if adoption could be right for you. Our founder, Nancy VanHoose, chose the name of this agency as inspiration from John 15:13 where Jesus said this: "Greater Love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."

This is what we witness when we work with birth parents who choose adoption. We see love. We see sacrifice. We see a good mom trying to make a loving decision that is best for her baby. That’s why we are GLAD to be called Greater Love Adoption Decision.

24 Aug 2023Ending An identity Crisis With David Enker00:49:05

Do you want to get clear on who you really are? Identity confuses the heck out of us adoptees. Until it doesn't. Listen in as we peel back the many layers of identity. We go beyond trauma to the very essence of who we are. One of the most profound interviews in over 350 conversations on this  podcast.

Here's a bit about David and his book

David Enker (Amsterdam, 1970) is a Dutch writer and artist. He was unofficially adopted as a baby, using the experience to explore the world from that unique perspective.

An unusual adoption, a gruesome family discovery, a lonesome journey, a brush with death in the London Underground and a life-altering diagnosis are just some of the ingredients in this collection of short stories.

This book will lead you on a sometimes heart-breaking, sometimes humorous journey of self-discovery that inspires hope and renewed appreciation for the blessings in life.

28 Apr 2021The Voice In The Adoptee's Head00:12:37

Years ago people were locked up for saying they heard voices in their head but I've yet to meet someone who doesn't have one.

They may not have realised it's not them. They may not have realised they have one. But they ALL have one.

The negative voice in my head, the inner critic, the internal terrorist, the enemy within me started squawking early in my life. It really ramped up after some particularly nasty bullying when I was at scout camp.

It grew louder as I grew older. Being adopted gave me a very specific and powerful reason to believe it. I did a million and one things to silence it. They didn't work. It just got louder as I fought back. In 2009 I finally learned what to do.

13 Mar 2023Goodby Shame With Birth Mother Laura Engel01:19:55

Shame is toxic. So how do we let it go? Laura shares some of her story and insights to help us heal through an understanding of what birth mothers go through. It's an incredibly powerful episode. Listen with big ears. Savour it and feel the love.

Here's a bit about Laura and her book from her website:

My book is about Laura, a woman who lived her life with her secrets finds her greatest secret unearthed at age 67. The child she was forced to give up for adoption when she was 17 in an Unwed Mothers Home in New Orleans unexpectedly sends her an email.  Meeting her 49 year-old son rocked her world and cracked her soul wide open. She found the acceptance and love she had always denied herself had been with her all along. My book tells an incredibly sad story but ends with a story of grace, hope, and extraordinary joy.

07 Apr 2023Unwoundable With Doug Dubrish01:14:30

Doug almost died when he was 5. When he found out he was adopted at 6 he took that in his stride. What on earth do these two things have to do with one another? What on earth can we learn from this to help us be happier? Listen in with big ears. This is a BIG episode!

Here's a bit about Doug from Amazon

"I lost my adoptive mother, and my adoptive father has since remarried. However, I always felt a longing to know more about my biological family. I discovered that I may have a sibling somewhere. I felt it was important to learn about my biological parents and any potential medical issues that could impact me or my family in the future. In this book, I share my journey of researching my biological family, from using "official" documentation before DNA testing was available to discovering my DNA relatives. If you're an adoptee or searching for your biological family, this book may offer valuable insights and guidance for your own journey. This book includes a Discussion Guide for reading groups."

02 Jul 2021Raising Resilient Adoptees With Sheila Chester - Adoptive Mom Wife, Non-Toxic Momma, Child Adoption Advocate, Natural Health Coach00:57:15

Here's an excerpt from Sheila's website:

"My story starts with my husband and I’s journey to become parents in 2008.  I grew up in a seemingly uncomplicated and non-dramatic country home in the plains of South Dakota where struggles were few and far between. Not until this moment in my life had I experienced a setback of this magnitude.

Going through infertility, and subsequently adoption, pushed me beyond limits I didn’t know I had. I learned more about myself than I could have possibly imagined. I learned that my lifelong anxiety may have been depression the whole time, causing more problems along the way. I now look at this ongoing experience as the gifts of infertility.

I share the process of fertility treatments, the adoption process, becoming a mother, and the challenge of staying married in the middle of it all. I share our personal heartaches and miracles that continue to this day.

On this site I share authentically and unapologetically, my journey with my biggest nemesis, my thoughts about how things were supposed to be.

Reality wins big."

28 Nov 2023At Peace - Finally With Pamela Karanova01:08:12

So many of have been fighting our feelings for so long that war is all we know. Pamela's whole life typified that. So how do we find peace? Listen in as she shares key moments, insights and much more on her hard fought journey to peace.

Here's Pamela's interview from earlier this year https://thriving-adoptees.simplecast.com/episodes/finding-happiness-within-with-pamela-karanova

Here's the adoptee therapist directory https://growbeyondwords.com/adoptee-therapist-directory/

Pamela Karanova, an adult adoptee, living in Lexington, Kentucky, was born in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1974. Although Pamela’s roots are scattered all over Iowa, she considers Kentucky to be her home.

Pamela is the President of a National Nonprofit called Adoptees Connect. Adoptees Connect is focused on putting adoptee voices first, creating irreplaceable adoptee-centric spaces where adoptee voices meet. The original connect group was planted in Lexington, KY, in January 2018. In just three short years, 50 connect groups have been planted in different locations around the USA, with two being in Canada. Pamela’s vision for Adoptees Connect didn’t stop in her community. She desires all adoptees to have an adoptee community to fall back on, so these groups are growing and expanding globally. They are designed to take online relationships offline and get to know the person behind the profile. In April 2019, Pamela won the “Angel In Adoption” award on behalf of the National Association for Adoptees and Parents for her role in the adoption community. Pamela is the creator and founder of Adoptee Remembrance Day – October 30th.  Here is a Adoptees Connect, Inc. Google Earth Project she’s created that shows all the group locations scattered all over the USA, Canada and even Queensland, Australia.

21 May 2021A Fresh Take On Fog00:15:24

When adoptees talk about the fog they're describing being unaware of the impact being adopted or relinquished has had on them.

If that's the case then I was in the fog for 40 years.

I was adopted at 5 weeks old, told about with the aid of a story book before my parents adopted a little girl before my second birthday.

We had a good life, lots of love and care. A good adoption.

At 40 I found out that my childhood teddy bear was a gift from my birth mother. My first reaction was curiosity. Sharing this story 4 months later, I flew into a fit of rage directed towards my birth mother.

Since then I've been trying to figure out how to be happy.

Along the way I stumbled across this thing called fog.

My conclusion?

Fog isn't what most people think it is.

I share what I've learned about fog here.

Bringing Families Together For A Bright Future.

At Camelot Community Care, this is not merely a slogan – it is our “calling”.  Our dedicated team seeks to live out this calling each and every day with respect, compassion and commitment equal to the enormous trust placed in us on behalf of our community’s most vulnerable children and families.  We measure our work against the most important yardstick we know; making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.

Camelot Community Care’s ability to create better outcomes for those we serve can be seen in the wide variety of effective programs that we implement and oversee.  We continue to make a positive impact that will be felt in our community for generations to come!

As a community-based care agency, partnership, and a spirit of collaborative caring are written into the DNA of our organization.  Through collaborative partnerships with other agencies statewide, our foster parents, volunteers, and community benefactors, our mission of enabling children and families to realize their fullest potential by stopping the cycle of abuse and neglect in families and in our community is possible.  The success of this model of care continues to be demonstrated year after year.  In spite of on-going society-wide economic challenges, the state’s opioid crisis, an increase in the number of children receiving out-of-home services statewide, and flat funding, our network, and tremendous community partnerships have allowed Camelot to continue our forward-thinking approach.

The child welfare system journey is ongoing and we would like to thank you for sharing it with us as we continue to keep our children safe and create a bright future for our most important resource.

07 Nov 2023Healing Clarity Sydney Parkhurst00:54:34

Do you feel confused? Clarity brings peace and helps us heal. Transracial adoptee Sydney shares some of the key insights that have brought her healing clarity. Listen in for your own insights.

Here's a bit about Sydney from her website:

At the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020, I received a Instagram DM from a girl claiming to be my half sister. As a transracial adoptee (biracial/half black, adopted by a white family) who has always been curious about her birth family, I knew that this text would change my life. And it did.

I was raised in a predominately – white community and experienced things such as separation anxiety, microagressions and identity crises for the majority of my life. Taking a DNA test and finding my half sister was just the beginning of my journey to finding my identity.

At the University of Tampa, I took a writing class and chose adoption as my subject for a research paper. I assumed all I would have to do is tell my story, do a little research and I’d get an automatic A right? Well, that’s not exactly what happened. As I was researching, I came across the words “transracial adoption”. Ironically, I had absolutely no idea what that meant, but when I found out, my whole world was flipped upside down.

Suddenly, all of my anxiety, confusion, and feelings about being out of place were justified. I wasn’t alone.

For me, it has been a journey of realization and self-love that got me to where I am now. My goal is to educate parents who plan to or have already transracially adopted about what it takes to raise a child of a different race. I also am very passionate about speaking to other adoptees, hearing/sharing their stories and showing them that they are not alone.

Transracial adoption is not a topic that is talked about very often and not many people even know what it is. I plan to spread awareness to the subject through social media platforms.

My life as an adoptee has not been easy, but I have also been blessed with opportunities that may have not happened if I wasn’t adopted. I hope that I can inspire others with the knowledge of transracial adoption and my passion for change.

10 Jul 2024Peace With Elle Klassen00:55:30

Does the term healing resonate with you? It doesn't for Canadian adoptee Elle. For her it's all about peace and feeling better. And being at peace with not knowing. Listen in as she shares how growing up with evangelical adoptive parents impacted her. And what's helped - and continues - to help her to peace.

Here's Elle's bio from the Adoption The Making Of Me podcast

Elle Klassen is a Canadian who was born to a young woman of nineteen years of age in 1970. She was relinquished and then placed with her adoptive family when she was five days old. She grew up in a very conservative Canadian evangelical family where adoption was spoken of as God's plan. Much of her religious background didn't sit well with her, including the narrative around adoption. As an adopted person whose big goal in life was to fly under the radar as much as she could, she never challenged the common narrative surrounding adoption that she grew up with. Several years ago she did a DNA test on a whim & with a hint of morbid curiosity. She wanted to know if her adoption information had been falsified as so many others in the baby scoop had been. As a result, she was reunited with her first family on both her maternal, and paternal sides. Digging for truth led to seeing relinquishment, and adoption as complicated, traumatic events in a child's life. The repercussions of this reach into adulthood, and can never be fully dealt with until it is seen for what it is whether someone has had a "good" adoption or not. Truthful conversations about adoption have become her passion. She now co-hosts the podcast "Pulled by the Root" to help facilitate the conversation about relinquishment & adoption, showcasing the voices of those adopted people, and first parents, who have been previously silenced in favor of perpetuating the idea that adoption is not a trauma or a system of belief that should not be challenged.

She has been working in the adoption field since 1992 and was the Director at a licensed adoption agency in Dallas for six years. Andrea also co-founded and co-Directed Lifetree Adoption Agency in Dallas, Texas from 2003 to 2014.

It is her passion and ministry to love and help people as Jesus loved and served. God is Love, and it is her goal to counsel those who feel alone, and to help them see how much God loves them and that He has a plan for their life. His unfailing love will guide them through their journey.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrea-damone-brown-754a868/

Here's more about her agency from their website:

Texas Christian Adoptions, LLC has over 30 years of experience in the field of adoption. We are a licensed child placing agency that provides professional guidance in pre- and post-adoptive services for both Expecting Mothers and Adoptive Families. It is important that our Expectant Mothers find peace about their decision, which is why we offer professional counseling services and a Support Group to help them find that peace.

Our objectives are to help Expecting Mothers determine if placement is in the best interest of both them and their child. Second, to place newborns up to three years of age with families who desire to adopt a child. Third, for Expectant Mothers who decide on adoption, we help them through the emotional and legal processes of adoption.

Our goal is to ensure solid placements by guiding our Expectant Mothers in a supportive manner, and assisting them in a healthy recovery from normal grief and separation loss issues. We encourage our clients with the knowledge that God is faithful and loves His children. That the trials they are encountering are  opportunities to see God work miracles in their life.

Texas Christian Adoptions, LLC offers open, semi-open, and closed adoptions. Semi-open adoptions are the most common type of adoption. It means that first names are shared and the Birth parents would be receiving updates and pictures until the child is 18 years old. The Birthparents can also send correspondences and gifts for the child if they felt comfortable doing so.

Texas Christian Adoptions, LLC is a proud member of the Better Business Bureau.

We are also licensed by the Department of Family and Protective Services. To learn more about them and how they serve the community, you can go to their website: https://www.dfps.state.tx.us/default.asp

02 Nov 2022How To Talk To Our Kids About Adoption00:51:15

If you are afraid you are definitely not alone. Fear is a familiar feeling for all parents but adoption can take it to another level. That's what adult adopted person and retired adoption professional Lynn Deiulis learned working in adoption for 25 years. In this fascinating and empowering episode we get to the very heart of that fear so you can parent with less of it, thrive and help your kids thrive too.

Lynn Deiulis was placed on adoption at the age of nine months. Her adoptive parents were advised to raise her as their own and forget where she had come from. Her parents followed this advice, and adoption became an uncomfortable topic. Her mother would answer Lynn’s adoption questions, but the emotion in her mother’s eyes eventually made Lynn stop asking. Lynn grew up not knowing how or whom to ask her many questions. As an adult, Lynn found and met some of her paternal and maternal birth family members and was able to learn much about the genetic and familial information she grew up without. As a result, she has been able to piece together more of her story.

Lynn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care and enjoyed a twenty-five year career in adoption services. Lynn has worked with many members of the adoption triad (children, birth parents, adoptive parents) as well as foster care and kinship families. She co-facilitated support groups where adult adopted persons, and birth parents, could freely share their unique stories and learn how and where to get some of their questions answered.

Her personal and professional journey sparked a passion to write a book that offers an opportunity for children to learn the unique details of their adoption or kinship stories, and helps adults talk to children about how they came to be living together as a family or living with another family. She also hopes the book will help professionals who work with children living through all phases of the adoption or kinship journey. Lynn resides in Northern Ontario, where she enjoys spending time with her husband and family, especially her grandchildren.

The relationship between the author and the illustrator has a unique quality. Krista Donnelly and Lynn are birth half sisters who met each other as adults in 2018. Separated by the adoption process, Krista and her three full sisters grew up not knowing that two older half sisters existed. When Lynn decided to write this book, she reached out to her “new sister” who is a talented graphic designer. Krista brought the book’s characters to life while building a relationship with Lynn at the same time. Krista learned about the impact on Lynn of growing up as an adoptee, while Lynn learned about the impact on Krista of discovering she had two birth half sisters she never knew existed! Their new mutual understanding of the impact of adoption has enriched this book. Lynn and Krista hope this book will help children and families talk about these unique stories long before the children become adults.

07 Feb 2023God Hated Me With Adoptee Lorah Gerald00:51:21

This episode is all about one of the most dramatic turnarounds we've ever heard on the podcast. Lorah used to think that God hated her. That she was a demon. That her soul was shattered. Reunion shook her to the core. So what changed? Listen into her profound shifts. Let them catalyse shifts in you.

Here's a link to the Rupert Spira video on trauma I mentioned https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7xz2GB89Oc

Here's more about Lorah from her website:

Welcome! Here’s a little bit about me. I am The Adopted Chameleon on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and Pinterest. I found writing and being creative was therapeutic. I started these pages when I was at a very low point until I found solace in the adult adoptee community. This group knows my pain and understood how I feel. I felt seen and heard for the first time. I had a language and was able to better express what I needed to heal.  Being vulnerable and talking about my pain has helped me. Now I write to help myself as well as others.

I am a trained Kundalini yoga instructor, TIYT-Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy, instructor, Reiki Master, and Intuitive. With my training in energy healing, trauma and breathe work training, I have studied methods that help with the healing process. Working with these tool I have learned to better understand my own trauma. I use my training to help myself and others. When we heal ourselves, we heal the world.

Having worked for Whole Foods Market for almost 7 years as their Marketing Team Leader, I relearned what whole, unprocessed food was. I enjoyed hosting many cooking classes, healthy eating events and, in turn, cleaned up my own diet. When I was young, my adoptive parents and I grew our own food. Food is important to our physical and mental well-being. I learned what foods to eat for optimal health.

I was born with abilities that allow me to see/feel/hear things that other people may not. I found out after reunion with my siblings, that a strong intuition ran in my genetic family on both sides, as well as with my adoptive mother. With my intuition and my training, I have come up with ways to help myself and offer to help others.

Using all these tools, I have helped myself manage the trauma that adoption caused me. I had some life-changing events that have sent me on this path. This healing power lies within all of us. I will share my knowledge and training, to help you unleash your own healing power.

I am an adoptee finding her way without her roots.

30 Nov 2023Healing On Every Level With Danielle Gaudette00:53:23

Are you happy with your healing? If not it may be because there are still some parts of you yet to heal. Listen in as Danielle explores where we heal and what hinders our healing. Here are Danielle's previous interviews on Thriving Adoptees:

https://thriving-adoptees.simplecast.com/episodes/upping-our-empathy-game

https://thriving-adoptees.simplecast.com/episodes/seeing-our-untarnished-soul

Here's a bit about Danielle from her website:

My name is Danielle and I am an Earth Citizen 🙂 .

What I mean when I say that, is I have a sincere desire to see a healthier, happier and more peaceful world, and I believe it starts with me.

I have dedicated my life to growing my own light by helping others to grow their light also.  For this, I currently work as a Regional Manager of Body & Brain Centers in Seattle, WA., giving lectures and leading training and coaching sessions.

My journey with this work and this path began over 20 years ago – when I started to seek healing for my own body, mind and spirit.  I have created Healing Tree – the blog, and now the book – in order to share my stories and inspirations family, friends, my students, and anyone else who may be interested in the healing journey.

It is a journey – and a long one at that!  Sometimes it’s nice to know you have companions along the way, traveling down similar roads as you.  It is my hope that the words you discover here become comforting friends for you, finding their way to your heart.  Who knows, they may even turn on a small light in there 🙂 When my light, your light, and our lights shine bright together, what a beautiful world it will be!

“Our adopted angel” – that’s what Danielle’s adoptive parents called her. She grew up adored, doted on, and unconditionally loved. It wasn’t until she was in college that she first felt a gnawing curiosity about her roots. From time to time, she would wonder: Where did this face come from? Where did this body come from? Where did this blood come from?  Her search to find her biological parents had begun – one full of surprises and revelations.

After reuniting with her birth mother – and uncovering the primal wound that lay deep within her – Danielle embarks on a twenty-year healing journey of self-discovery, reconciliation, and forgiveness.

At once a heartfelt memoir and a guide to self-awareness, Healing Tree offers a compassionate exploration of self, family, and what it means to be whole. Rooted in her twenty-year practice in Body & Brain holistic mind/body techniques, Danielle offers an approachable eight-step method for anyone wishing to heal from emotional or psychological wounds. This method invites readers to cultivate a loving relationship with their authentic selves and charts a pathway to inner peace.

For anyone who feels stuck, hurt, or rudderless in the sea of life, for anyone interested in doing the deep work of self-healing, becoming liberated, and realizing the potential to heal beyond themselves, Healing Tree is a source of direction, inspiration, and hope.

How many ex foster kids are professors? How many have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of children from hard places. Dr David Cross is uniquely placed to support you the adoptive parent and this episode is a gem. The paradox of helping your kids thrive is that it starts with you thriving. Listen in with big ears as David shares succinct and clear insights into how you can make that happen.

Here's some more about David and the Institute he leads from their website:

Dr. David Cross is the Rees-Jones Director of the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development and a Professor in the TCU Department of Psychology. He leads the KPICD in its triple mission of research, education, and outreach to improve the lives of children from hard places. The Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development strives to help children suffering from the effects of early trauma, abuse and/or neglect. We conduct research to deepen understanding about the complex needs of these children and how to help them overcome social, behavioral, and emotional challenges. Through various outreach initiatives, we train professionals in Trust-Based Relational Intervention®, a research-based, holistic model developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross. Please understand that we are not a service provider, and do not provide clinical services of any kind.

13 May 2021Thriving Despite Trauma With Suzanne Connolly CEO of Barnados Ireland00:42:05

Suzanne was formerly the Director of Children’s Services for Barnardos, a role which she has held for the past 17 years. Suzanne led the transformation of Barnardos’ children’s services to become needs led and outcome focused with a clear organisational commitment to evaluation of their work.

She is a qualified Social Worker. Suzanne has an immense amount of experience of working with children who have experienced singular or multiple traumas and how this often intersects with chronic disadvantage. She has a particular expertise on child protection services and family support services for diverse communities.

Barnardos mission is to help transform children’s lives through our services, support parents; and challenge society where it fails our children.  Barnardos provides practical and emotional supports to children and parents in its 40 centres, in families’ own homes, through the school environment and within their communities.

Suzanne’s vision is that Barnardos be a trauma-informed organisation working to deliver crucial services for children in Ireland.  This will involve a whole organisation approach rooted in the understanding and awareness of how exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can cause toxic stress for a child.  Toxic stress shapes the architecture of a child’s brain and influences their emotional, social, cognitive and physical development.

here's a bit about Bellis  from their website:

Our mission is to serve as an empowering voice for adoption that connects, inspires, and transforms.

Our reach extends to all people with any adoption experience who seek peer-based support for ambiguous grief related to adoption. Often, participants work together to advocate for greater awareness and understanding of adoption in schools and communities.

Our work is neutral – it is not affiliated with any political or religious agencies. Bellis does not receive funding from any entity involved in the child-placement process or the process leading to or including the termination of parental rights.

While benefiting from the expertise of many throughout the adoption, foster care and social service sector, Bellis works independently as a provider of peer-based support and advocacy.

While fully appreciating and acknowledging the trauma associated with the termination of parental rights, and many injustices within that process, our focus lies entirely on the phase of life following the termination, specifically on the long-ignored grief and loss needs of the mother.

Bellis strives to refrain from judgment, understanding that each adoption is unique. As such, terms used to universally describe the impact of adoption, including “primal wound,” are not part of our organizational culture or language.

We believe the stigma, stereotypes, shame, and myths attached to adoption over decades exasperate challenges related to the lived experience of adoption.

19 Jan 2023Lightbulb Moments With Adoptee Suni Zmich00:53:38

Trauma experts talk about neuroplasticity as our brain's ability to change but they don't explain how to harness it. It's a lot simpler than it seems. Lightbulb moments start change. So how do have more lightbulb moments? By listening to other people's lightbulb moments. By remaining open as we listen. Being aware of when our old beliefs are blocking new ideas like bouncers block new people coming into a nightclub. Suni shares some of her lightbulb moments about her birth mother, forgiveness and understanding to catalyse lightbulb moments for you. Listen in and listen up.

Here's a bit about Suni and her book:

After ignoring her own adoption story for 50 years, SUNI MILLER ZMICH journeyed alongside the interviewees as they described their stories, connecting on an elemental level, her unanticipated reward was she could clearly see herself in the mirror for the first time in her life. She is the mother of two daughters, a retired accounting and finance manager, and a transient ex-army brat poised for the next adventure. Practically empty nesters, she and her husband, Kurt, live in Minneapolis. For Now. When I first started Through the Lens of Ourselves,I only had a vague idea of what I wanted to accomplish.

I am an adoptee. After conducting many interviews, my personal journey melded with the interviewees. I learned that ALL members of the adoption triad yearn for familial connection. In listening to the birth mothers, I was surprised at my own reaction. For years, I had harbored resentment about my own birth parents and would not fully invest myself emotionally with my adoptive parents. But after allowing myself to see through the lens of the birth parents in my book, I felt safe enough to become closer to my adoptive parents.

My hope is that my book will bring peace to to those who are still traumatized by their adoption experience. I will forever be grateful to the individuals who were brave enough to share their stories with me. They nourished my soul and I hope their stories will feed the world.

Listening to the stories of others touched by adoption healed me.

My hope is that my book will also heal you.

You know that quiet voice that whispers to you when you first wake up in that fuzzy space between sleep and full consciousness - where your dreams and reality collide? I would sometimes hear those little nudges to examine my adoption.

09 May 2023A Journey To Self With Jeff Forney00:52:45

With our life story missing chapter 1, it's no wonder identity can be tricky or a complete mystery for us adoptees. How can we feel good enough if we don't know who we are? Listen in as Jeff and I explore identity beyond shame, guilt and trauma.

Jeff was adopted at birth. Raised in the Bay Area by two wonderfully loving parents, Jeff still felt a pull to know and uncover the mystery of his origin. Jeff eventually found his biological roots and has been in reunion with his birthmother for almost 30 years.

Now, a photographer living in Los Angeles, a chance photoshoot with Ray Liota and discovering he, too, is adopted, a project was ‘birthed’ to photograph and interview adoptees in reunion with their biological parents.

The project has been a transformative process, but Jeff now finds himself hosting adoptee meetings at his home twice a month. Through Jeff’s involvement with the adoption community and just so happening to be a close friend of Jennifer Griffith and her husband Mark, Jeff has lent his ‘adoption constellation membership’ to Jennifer when her podcast touches the subject of adoption and foster parenthood.

He is not claiming to be an expert on adoption but a mindful devotee to living open and vulnerable. Jeff is happy to help others identify with those who have dealt with adoption/foster care issues and create a community of nourishment.

08 Apr 2022Elastic Parenting With Kristine Altwies00:59:37

Here's a little about Kristine's organisation from her website:

Hawaii International Child (HIC) (founding name, Hawaii International Child Placement and Family Services, Inc.), was established in 1975 by members of Hawai'i’s adoption community. HIC’s founding members came from a background of personal connection to international adoption. Some had parents who’d been adopted, others had adopted children themselves, or were raised with siblings who’d been adopted.

In its early years, HIC worked directly with Holt Children’s Services International, bringing nearly 2,000 orphaned children from Korea to American families. In 1991 HIC moved from the Big Island of Hawai'i, to Honolulu on the island of Oahu, to better serve a larger adoptive parent population. HIC has actively sought to maintain its reputation as a friendly and client-focused agency. Our staff is united in our love of children, our respect for adoptive parents, and our enjoyment of the important work we are lucky to be able to do.

From 1975 to 2020, HIC helped more than 3,000 children find their forever families. We ran adoption programs in China, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Ukraine, Taiwan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and the Republic of Georgia. We worked in cooperation with other agencies and parties, to place children from Cambodia, the Philippines, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico and Japan. We served as a contract agency with the State of Hawai'i Department of Human Services to place children from foster care into permanent homes in Hawai'i. We worked with adoption attorneys in private adoptions and facilitate private domestic adoptions. We worked to place children from mainland state foster programs into permanent homes in Hawai'i.

In an effort to work more closely with our families in Hawai'i, in 2020, HIC grew into A Family Tree. As AFT, we continue to offer the full range of adoption services, domestic child placement, home studies, parent training, (birth) parent support. As also opened our PonoRoots Counseling Center, support families, couples, children and individuals.

As a 501(c)3 non-profit agency, AFT is governed by the AFT Board of Directors and is licensed by the State of Hawai'i.

05 Jul 2023Understanding Healing With Jack Rocco00:51:26

If your truth has been shattered this episode is one for you. Jack opens up about how we get through the challenges life throws at us adoptees. Jack has a gift for clarity and distills neuroscience from his college days in a way that we can all understand healing. He changed my take on trauma. Listen in and see if he does the same for you.

Jack Rocco is one of the more than two million babies born in the 1960s who were taken away from their birth mothers and sent to live with an adoptive family. He was adopted by a blue-collar, Italian American family. Jack’s identity was built around his Italian heritage and while he knew the story of his “Gotday,” he didn’t know the story of his “birth day.” His was a closed adoption, and all he knew was that his birth parents were a young couple—an Italian father and a German Irish mother—who couldn’t afford to raise a child.

He was also one of the lucky ones. On the outside, it appeared that Dr. Rocco had weathered the adoption phenomenon with ease: he had a successful career as an orthopedic surgeon, a nice home, a beautiful wife and two children, and he traveled the world helping children in faraway places like Madagascar. But then his marriage broke down and the pandemic hit and he began to question everything.

Turns out he didn’t know the truth.

In Recycled, Dr. Rocco shares his journey of discovering that the birth story he's been told and his belief about closed adoptions—that there's no way to obtain details—might not be true. He devours books about adoption and adoption trauma. He tries to follow the long and twisted tentacles of nurture, nature, and free will—which parts of him were due to genetics? The nurturing environment of his adoptive home? And which parts did he have control over?

As some of the puzzle pieces of his life click into place, others remain disconnected and swirling out of reach. And then, he makes a discovery that shatters his very self-identity.

10 May 2023Mindfluid With Catie Samantha Peck00:54:24

Catie's watershed moment came when shame shifted for her. Listen in as we go deep on shifting shame through tenacity and curiosity - being mindfluid rather than being stuck in a mindset. This episode is one of the most laser focused conversations we've ever had on the show. That focus makes it incredibly powerful. I hope you love listening to the conversation as much Catie and I loved having it.

Here's some background on Catie from her website:

My name is Catie Samantha Peck. At birth I was named Samantha Claire. I was relinquished by my first mother, and then lived in 2 foster homes. At 7 weeks old I was adopted and renamed Catherine Anne by my adoptive family. I now choose to go by Catie Samantha Peck, and my friends, family, and clients call me Catie.

A little bit about me. I currently hold a LMSW in New York State, and a CCTP-I trauma certification. I began my education at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ, where I received a Bachelor of Social Work degree in 2006. I then went on to obtain a Master of Social Work degree from the Greater Rochester Collaborative Master of Social Work Program (Nazareth College / SUNY Brockport) in 2007. I published my Master’s Thesis on Adoption Trauma at that time. I have practiced Social Work in New York State for the past 15 years. During my career, I have primarily served Veterans, and Caregivers of Veterans, for 10 years at the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs. I specialized in working with the Geriatric population for a portion of this time and have an affinity for working with older adults. Prior to that, at the onset of my career, I worked in a hospital setting with a medically frail population. I have additionally worked as a mental health counselor in an outpatient low-income clinic setting. The exposure and attempts at belonging to many families, along with my own genetic bewilderment until adulthood, has allowed me a uniquely empathic approach towards diversity and inclusion in my practice.

Due to my own experience with the destructive impact of family separation, I have a particularly sensitive approach to personal and historical trauma, and the shame, fear, and pain that it causes families generationally. I find personal time in nature, relationships with our animal friends, and humor as all critical pieces to an individual’s ability to achieve mental wellness. My adoptive mother that raised me was a Late Discovery Adoptee (LDA) which means that she did not discover that she was adopted until she was an adult. Since neither of us had any post-adoption support, we had to figure out on our own that our family’s historical losses were both strengths and challenges to us. I successfully reunited with my first family (Biological Mother and Biological Father) when I was 36 years old, and they are a large part of my life. I continue to maintain close relationships with my adoptive family. When I am not doing THIS, I share my life with my husband, who is a teacher and also a helper by nature, and my definition of family, which includes close friendships, biological kin, adoptive family and furry companions. Traveling, kayaking, live music, and writing help me find my center."

23 May 2023Perspective With Eric Mueller00:50:47

"When I was forty-five, I received a photograph of my birth mother in the mail—the first time I ever saw someone who looked like me. Seeing myself in another person’s face was a lightning bolt so powerful it divided my life into everything that happened before that moment from everything that happened after." Listen as Eric explains more and we discuss perspective, unconditional love and more...

Eric had always wondered what it was like to have a visual bond with someone else: something that clearly marked you as members of the same family. Did it make you love each other more?

18 Oct 2021Beyond Trauma & Hurt With Schylar Baber Adoptee & Executive Director00:54:08

Here's the link we discuss in the podcast:

https://voice-for-adoption.org/family-portrait-project

Schylar, a Montanan, joined Voice for Adoption in May 2016. Schylar has dedicated his professional and volunteer life to the belief that children and youth in the child welfare system need respect, support, and family. Schylar has a bachelor’s in professional and technical communications from Montana Tech and a master’s in public administration from the University of Montana.

He has served as president of the board of Montana Court Appointed Special Advocates, secretary of the boards of ChildWise Institute, and FosterClub, and as a commissioner on the governor appointed Protect Montana’s Kids Commission. Schylar is a nationally recognized leader; in 2008, he received FosterClub. Inc’s Outstanding Young Leader award for his work with the Kids Are Waiting Campaign and the passage the Fostering Connections to Success and Increased Adoptions Act. In 2018, Schylar was selected as an American Express NGEN Fellow. That same year, during his time at Voice for Adoption, Schylar was recognized in the congressional record for his work with the passage of the Family First Prevention Services Act.

Schylar’s commitment to improving the futures of children and youth in care is due, in large part, to his own life experiences. He spent 11 years in foster care before aging out without a family. When he was 25, his mentor and sixth-grade teacher adopted him. Schylar explained, “I always longed for a place to call my own and, at one point, was told that I was too old to be adopted.” Schylar remembers the stigma and trauma from his years in foster care and fights for his peers, believing that no child should be told that they are unadoptable.

As the executive director of Voice for Adoption, Schylar continues his life’s work of serving vulnerable—but resilient—young people. “I am blessed with the opportunity to be a voice for children in foster care that are often feeling alone the dark, feel that no one hears them, feel that no cares and that no one is on their side. I believe every child needs the benefit of a permanent and loving place to call home.”

https://www.linkedin.com/in/schylar-baber/

Voice for Adoption advocates, educates, and collaborates to advance federal policies that promote and sustain permanence for children and youth in foster care. Here's more from their website:

Our Vision of Success

All children and youth in foster care in the U.S. will have a safe, loving, supported and permanent family.

What We Do

We work with members of congress, policy makers, partner organizations, and agencies to encourage sound policies that are in the best interest of our nation’s waiting foster children.

Voice for Adoption (VFA) advocates for the safety and well-being of children in foster care.

VFA holds briefings on foster and adoption issues on Capitol Hill.

VFA works on special projects focused on raising awareness around the needs of foster and adoptive youth, and the families that adopt them.

VFA strives to ensure the foster care and adoption issues remain at the forefront our policy maker's attention.

Our History

Voice for Adoption was established in 1996 to provide a permanent mechanism to shape the public debate regarding:

the needs of children who are growing up without families of their own;

  • the lifelong consequences for the development of these children and their later functioning as adults when they continue to be forgotten;
  • the positive potential of adoption to meet the needs of these children; and
  • the benefits to the community of providing ongoing support for families who adopt the children

VFA is a bi-partisan force, which shapes the future by providing accurate information on adoption issues, encouraging prompt adoption of waiting children, and supporting sound public policy in adoption.

07 Dec 2022Healing Our Feelings With Laurie James01:02:12

Feeling unwanted is a central theme to many of adoptees' lives. We ache for connection. And it's a deep throbbing heartache that hurts like hell.  Listen in as adoptee Laurie and I explore what she's learned to help you heal that heartache.

What does it mean to belong? Laurie James spent most of her life wondering that same question. A lack of belonging and loneliness dictated how she spent most of her life. She rarely shared her secret with others—it was always hidden behind a carefree and can-do attitude.

In her mid-forties, Laurie is sent down an unwanted path after her mother has a heart attack and her husband’s lawyer delivers some shocking news. She suddenly finds herself Sandwiched between caring for her parents, managing unruly caregivers, raising four teenage daughters, and trying to understand the choices of her husband she thought she knew.

Sandwiched is a story about one woman’s struggle to do “it all” while facing the reality that the ideal life and family she believed she had created was slowly crumbling beneath her. As she tries everything to keep her family together, Laurie seeks therapy, turns to yoga, rediscovers nature, develops a strong female tribe and begins writing. As she explores the layers of her life and heals her past, she realizes that she’s the only one who can create the life she wants and deserves.

Sandwiched, is a memoir debut about what it means to let go of the life you planned in order to find the life you belong to.

24 Jul 2024Lucky Bastard With Anthony Akerman01:02:15

What if time ISN'T the greatest healer? What is? Anthony lost a wife through divorce, his adoptive mother who died and his birth mother for the second time. All in one year. How did he cope? What did he learn? Listen in as he shares some of his greatest healings. And we go deep on the healing power of realisations.

About his book Lucky Bastard

When he was ten years old, the author was told he’d been adopted. It was a seismic event that turned his world upside down. Nobody was who he thought they were. His mother wasn’t his mother; his father wasn’t his father; his sister wasn’t his sister; his grandparents weren’t his grandparents; he wasn’t related to any of his relatives; he didn’t know where he came from or who he was. This was at a time when adoption was shrouded in secrecy and shame. Birth mothers and adoptive parents signed non-disclosure agreements. Adoption records were sealed. In Lucky Bastard Anthony Akerman takes the reader on his quest to find out where he came from.

16 Dec 2021Coming From Love With Shaun Doyle00:54:10

Shaun Doyle comes to Adoption STAR with 20 years of experience working for not-for-profits in the area of developmental disability. After studying at SUNY Fredonia, Shaun moved to Orlando, Florida to work for Walt Disney World. There he learned to train not only Disney Cast Members, but also to train people from other organizations on Disney’s Approach to Quality Service and Disney’s Innovation in Action. Shaun also created and led youth programs at the Disney Institute.

Prior to joining the STAR team as the Intake Manager, he was the Director of Training and Staff Development for Autism Services of WNY. In his time there, Shaun developed multiple training curricula in not only working with people on the spectrum, but in leadership, hands-free intervention and customer service.

At the start of his career, Shaun traveled to Romania to help train staff in institutions and orphanages that were about to close, to ensure effective and humane treatment for the children that would be returning to their communities. 26 Oct 2022The Key To Adoptees' Happiness With Charlotte Laws00:56:00

Where do we find happiness? Is it nature or nurture? Adoptee Charlotte came through some very tricky times in her adoptive family including her mother's suicide. What's she learned along the way? How has she become who she is? How has focusing on others has helped her be happy. Listen in for a very empowering episode.

Dr. Charlotte Laws is an author, columnist, and public speaker. She was the star of the NBC show, “The Filter” (4 years), a political pundit on BBC television (6 years), and a southern California politician (councilmember and city commissioner - 8 years). She has had over 30 different jobs, some quite unusual: lecturer at the FBI Academy in Quantico, private eye, director of a legal corporation, cab driver, actress, chip chatter, fashion designer, nurse, backup singer for an Elvis imitator, bodyguard, magazine cover girl, Realtor, stand-up comic, et al. She was an Atlanta debutante. She has never had a glass of alcohol, a cigarette, or tried an illegal drug. Laws was born in a car and adopted at birth. Her adoptive brother was killed at 16, her adoptive father was abusive, and her adoptive mom committed suicide. As an adult, Charlotte tracked down her natural family (mother, father, and two siblings) and enjoys a loving relationship with them to this day. Laws’ natural grandfather—a lawyer who planned to run for U.S. Senate—was murdered by a devil worshipper in the 1940s. She wrote the nonfiction novel, Devil in the Basement, about his life and death.

Laws is listed as the fourth most notorious party crasher in the world, beating Bill Murray, Queen Elizabeth, Serena Williams, and Lady Gaga. Party crashing began as a hobby for Laws in her teens, but later became a creative way to snag facetime with business leaders, politicians, and A-list celebrities in order to lobby for legislation, attain business partners, get exclusive interviews, and recruit charity volunteers. Laws has crashed the Secret Service four times. Laws was voted “one of the 30 fiercest women in the world” by Buzzfeed and is the recipient of the Los Angeles Animal Humanitarian Award. She is a vegan and animal advocate. Her hen, Mae Poulet, was a write-in candidate in the 2012 presidential election and is the only chicken in the world who has run for political office. Laws authored the 2016 California ballot initiative, the “Intolerant Jackass Act,” to support LGBTQ+ rights and worked for Aids Project Los Angeles during the 1980s.

Laws has a doctorate from USC (2000), two Masters Degrees from USC (1997 and 1986), and two BA degrees (1996 and 1985). She completed Post-Graduate Study at Oxford University, England (2003). Laws authored the following books: Meet the Stars, Rebel in High Heels, Armed for Ideological Warfare, Devil in the Basement, and Undercover Debutante. She contributed chapters to the following academic works: Igniting a Revolution: Voices in Defense of Mother Earth, A Call to Compassion, Uncaged, and Animals and the Environment: Advocacy, activism and the quest for common ground. As a columnist, Laws’ articles (on news and current events) have appeared in the Huffington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the NY Daily News, the Washington Post, Newsweek, Special Report, E the Environmental Magazine, the L.A. Daily News, Gawker, the Daily Caller, Publisher’s Weekly, Jezebel, the Oakland Tribune, Salon, et al.

Laws has appeared as a guest on dozens of television shows and networks, including “Larry King Live,” “Oprah,” MSNBC, CNN, “The Late Show,” BBC, TMZ, Fox News, “AM Los Angeles,” “Nightline,” “Dr. Drew,” and “Good Day L.A,” among others. After a topless photo of Laws’ daughter was hacked and posted on a revenge porn website, Laws worked tirelessly for two years to bring the website owner to justice. He eventually went to prison. Laws is known throughout the world as the “Erin Brockovich of revenge porn.” To date, she has helped over 500 victims of nonconsensual pornography, sextortion, and morphed porn. She has also assisted legislators in getting anti-revenge porn laws passed throughout the U.S. and hopes a federal law will be in place soon.

Laws lives in Los Angeles with her husband, her two rescue dogs, and her seven rescue hens. She loves tennis, dead philosophers, collecting vintage clothes, nature, and animals. She tries to live her life in accordance with ahimsa: non-injury to all living beings. She believes persistence is the key to success and “othercentrism” (helping others) is the key to happiness.

22 Jun 2021Changing To Thrive With FASD - Natalie Vecchione Adoptive Parent And FASD Podcaster00:59:07

Here's  a little about Natalie:

"My name is Natalie Vecchione. I’m a homeschool mom of two and we built our family through adoption. Our son, who is almost 19, lives with an FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). 05 Feb 2023No Longer An Outsider With Adoptee Leah Cooper00:44:19

Feeling like an outsider. So many of us felt like that growing up. And that feeling has stayed with us into adulthood. Listen in as Leah shares her journey to feeling at home. Fitting in. Comfortable in her own skin. It's NOT a straight or straightforward. But there's insights aplenty. Listen in for your own. This episode is a real catalyst.

Here's a link to Leah's interview with Haley https://www.adopteeson.com/listen/202

Here's more about Leah's project for adoptees:

BACKGROUND: In My Heart: The Adoption Story Project began in 2014 in collaboration with 200+ people in the adoption community sharing their true stories with Wonderlust Productions. In 2016, the play, written and directed by Alan Berks and Leah Cooper, was performed to enthusiastic, sold-out audiences at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis, MN by a 34-member cast and live band, including professional actors and members of the adoption community.

The graphic novel, adapted from the play, reflects a full spectrum of community perspectives ranging from adoptees to social workers, adoptive parents to birth parents, foster families, and beyond. Contributors span the ages of 14 to 80 and include voices from the African American, Native American, and Korean American communities. This book explores adoption and its complexities--examining concepts of family and intersecting with issues in society related to law, class, and identity.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: Alice is getting married, and her sister Jen is returning from Korea to be with her. But when they meet Lewis's parents at the engagement party, the realities of adoption send them down the rabbit hole―where the feelings they've tried to ignore come to life in fantastical forms. Based on and including the true stories of adoptees, adoptive parents, birth parents, social workers, and siblings, In My Heart captures the delight and darkness of an experience that touches one in three people. It will change forever how you think about family.
