In the latest episode of the Thrive by Design podcast, I had an inspiring conversation with Kristina Mand-Lahkiani, author of the empowering book, Becoming Flawesome. 

Kristina is also the co-founder of Mindvalley, the renowned personal development platform. Together, we explored the path to self-love and how it can transform your life.

How we learn to be self-critical

From a very young age, we are told that to succeed, we have to work on our weaknesses and mistakes. Kristina shared an example of what she calls the red marker technique, which goes like this… 

You write an essay, and your teacher takes a red marker and points out all of your mistakes, gives it back to you, and says, ‘Work on your mistakes, then you'll be a success.’ 

This is a common paradigm in society, that reinforces our pattern of always looking for what’s wrong and then trying to fix it. But there’s another, less popular paradigm called the green marker technique. 

In this scenario, the teacher takes your essay and highlights everything you did really well, gives it back to you, and says, ‘Work on your strengths, and that's how you will succeed.’ Our society typically doesn’t work this way, but imagine if it did.

Reinforcing Our Beliefs

There is scientific evidence that if you believe in something, you're going to notice the evidence of that belief. The reticular activating system in your brain filters out the stimuli because you can't register everything. So instead, you notice what you focus on. And that's how our beliefs get reinforced. 

In addition to learning how to be self-aware, Kristina talks about:

One of the reasons jewelry business founders feel frustrated during a slow season is that they're focused on a lack of sales instead of shifting their focus to how they can make the most of the slow summer months to grow their businesses. 

In Podcast Episode 411, I'll share 5 tips to maximize your slower months for greater impact and efficiency in your business...

  1. Catch up on learning: Revisit courses, join a new program like Momentum or Laying the Foundation, binge your favorite podcasts, and catch up on business books. 

  2. Work on those big projects: Develop systems, create your production manual, hire a marketing VA or automate processes to streamline your operations.

  3. Work on your marketing: Optimize your email sequences, switch to a new email service provider or CRM if needed, and design a new lead magnet pdf or quiz

  4. Prepare for the holiday season: Design a new collection, create inventory for the holidays, and map out your plans for in-person shows and special promotions 

  5. Take a well-deserved break: Take a staycation, work on your mindset, and recharge your energy to avoid burnout and stay motivated for the busy holiday season.

The best course of action for the slow summer months, or whenever business is slow for you, is to take action with intention. Sitting and stressing is not the best use of your time. 

So instead, listen to Episode #411 and catch up on learning, work on important projects, plan your marketing, prepare for the holidays, and take a break. These actions will set you up for success and growth in your business.

Can jewelry designers really double their biz online in just a few months? Yes, and I’m not talking about church change. I’m talking about real growth. 

 

One student, who will remin nameless, said this after she learned these strategies in one of our programs:

 

“I could kick myself because I wasn’t collecting email addresses or following up with people after shows, and now I’m going to do $8500 this month from just those basic strategies you taught me.” 

 

If you’re focused on being of service, you can get amazing results with the sales strategies we cover today:

When Lindsey Kirk’s husband came home and told her how much he was struggling at his swing shift factory job, it was clear they were at a crossroads.

 

She knew that in spite of her feeling of panic, it was time to take her jewelry business to the next level.

 

After 5 years of running a studio space to sell her pieces in Quincy, Illinois — while working a part-time job to make it work — Lindsey decided it was time to close the store and double down on her website (lucky for her, because the pandemic hit just a few weeks later). 

 

Lindsey had been a fan of Thrive by Design since the podcast launched back in 2015, and when she and her husband decided he would go back to school, she came looking for support in playing full-out to build her online sales.

Asking what I was done with in my own ‘rock bottom’ moment back in 2008 started me on the journey to the life and business I have today.

 

I was 40, and in total shock after the recession crashed my business overnight, taking my confidence with it. The guy I’d been dating for 3 years ghosted me. I went on vacation with two girlfriends to Nicaragua and couldn’t afford to do everything they wanted to do, and then on top of it all I got stung by a stingray at the beach one day.

 

Ugh.

 

I’d had enough. I was so done being broke, being taken for granted, being afraid.

 

On that trip I realized that I had no choice but to start doing things differently. 

 

I invested in coaching so I could get super clear about what I wanted from my business. 

 

I quit dating people who didn’t truly care about me so I could make space for someone who did. 

 

I stopped taking custom orders from people who were not going to pay me and focused everything on building an online platform for the people who would.

 

And in a few months, everything was different.

Threads is all the buzz lately! 100 million new users join in just the first week, which is crazy!

 

You have to ask yourself (because who really needs yet another social media platform):

 

  • Is it worth your time? 

  • Is it just another time suck? 

  • How can you leverage it for your business? 

 

The jury is still out, but for now, I’d say give it a try and just have fun experimenting. 

 

Will Threads replace Twitter? 

 

Or will it go the way of Clubhouse? Remember during the pandemic lockdown, when Clubhouse was everyone’s favorite shiny new toy? We were all isolated and stuck at home, so what else was there to do? But nowadays, is anyone even still using it? Not me.

 

I’m still experimenting and playing around with Threads to decide for myself how it might fit into an overall marketing strategy. What I’ve sensed so far is that it's not political or journalistic (like Twitter). It's actually more like the early days of Facebook when you’d post a random status.

If you're thinking about joining the Threads app and want to grow a big following, it’s best to jump on now before it gets overcrowded. I've been posting on both of my accounts daily (tracymatthewsny and flourish_thrive), just one or two things here and there, trying to get a feel for the app and how I might leverage it going forward.

In the latest episode of the Thrive by Design podcast, I had an inspiring conversation with Kristina Mand-Lahkiani, author of the empowering book, Becoming Flawesome

 

Kristina is also the co-founder of Mindvalley, the renowned personal development platform. Together, we explored the path to self-love and how it can transform your life.

 

How we learn to be self-critical

 

From a very young age, we are told that to succeed, we have to work on our weaknesses and mistakes. Kristina shared an example of what she calls the red marker technique, which goes like this… 

 

You write an essay, and your teacher takes a red marker and points out all of your mistakes, gives it back to you, and says, ‘Work on your mistakes, then you'll be a success.’ 

 

This is a common paradigm in society, that reinforces our pattern of always looking for what’s wrong and then trying to fix it. But there’s another, less popular paradigm called the green marker technique. 

 

In this scenario, the teacher takes your essay and highlights everything you did really well, gives it back to you, and says, ‘Work on your strengths, and that's how you will succeed.’ Our society typically doesn’t work this way, but imagine if it did.

 

Reinforcing Our Beliefs

 

There is scientific evidence that if you believe in something, you're going to notice the evidence of that belief. The reticular activating system in your brain filters out the stimuli because you can't register everything. So instead, you notice what you focus on. And that's how our beliefs get reinforced. 

 

In addition to learning how to be self-aware, Kristina talks about:

Growing up in a dysfunctional environment with an alcoholic mother, ADHD, drug abuse, foster care, and prison, best-selling author of Buy Back Your Time, Dan Martell, has an incredible and inspirational story not to be missed. 

Despite feeling broken, Dan’s life took a positive turn when a prison guard named Brian expressed belief in him…
