In the latest episode of the Thrive by Design podcast, I had an inspiring conversation with Kristina Mand-Lahkiani, author of the empowering book, Becoming Flawesome. 

Kristina is also the co-founder of Mindvalley, the renowned personal development platform. Together, we explored the path to self-love and how it can transform your life.

How we learn to be self-critical

From a very young age, we are told that to succeed, we have to work on our weaknesses and mistakes. Kristina shared an example of what she calls the red marker technique, which goes like this… 

You write an essay, and your teacher takes a red marker and points out all of your mistakes, gives it back to you, and says, ‘Work on your mistakes, then you'll be a success.’ 

This is a common paradigm in society, that reinforces our pattern of always looking for what’s wrong and then trying to fix it. But there’s another, less popular paradigm called the green marker technique. 

In this scenario, the teacher takes your essay and highlights everything you did really well, gives it back to you, and says, ‘Work on your strengths, and that's how you will succeed.’ Our society typically doesn’t work this way, but imagine if it did.

Reinforcing Our Beliefs

There is scientific evidence that if you believe in something, you're going to notice the evidence of that belief. The reticular activating system in your brain filters out the stimuli because you can't register everything. So instead, you notice what you focus on. And that's how our beliefs get reinforced. 

In addition to learning how to be self-aware, Kristina talks about:

  • The impact of our beliefs and how they shape our reality

  • The importance of self-awareness and its role in personal growth

  • The dark side of personal development

  • The key skills for self-love: honesty, kindness, and courage

  • The dangers of narcissism and spiritual bypassing

It’s super important to build up anticipation for your event! Social media is an awesome tool to create a buzz. Start posting well in advance and often! Make an event on Facebook and send out invitations. Seriously, people will love it and totally show up on the day of your live sale!

Send out emails! Your email list is another great way to get people excited for a live event. Listen now to get more awesome tips from Lisa for your email list!

Don’t Forget Friends and Family

I hear designers say all the time they want to move past selling to their friends and family. That’s great! However, friends and family can be a huge source of business. They will still show up to events and sometimes spend a ton of money.

Your friends will tell their friends! Make sure your friends and family know about the event. Posting on your personal Facebook can get friends and family engaged. More often than not they’ll totally want to share the deets with their friends too!

Have Fun With It

Going live can be a little scary, I get it! Just remember it’s supposed to be fun. You get to talk with your clients in real time which is so cool! Creating a fun environment will get people excited and allow you to have a stress free live event!

Lisa had her daughter model the pieces, which I think is so great! It adds a personal touch, plus she totally hammed it up and made it really exciting. Lisa also had the sale in her studio.

I think that’s so cool for clients, they get to see where you actually make all your amazing stuff!

These are just a few ways to keep your sale light and playful.

There’s a lot that goes into growing your jewelry sales – online.One thing is for sure,  Live Selling is a great way to create “community” around your brand, get more website traffic, and scale your growth.

 

I am passionate about helping jewelry business owners grow their businesses and create multiple streams of revenue. In my experience, I see a lot of jewelry makers who thrive selling in person or to stores but they can’t seem to translate that in person experience or success into e-commerce sales. 

 

So they throw their hands up, give up, and think: selling online is not for me!

 

It’s important to know that training your customers to buy from you online is NOT super hard but it does take a strategy, consistency (most of you are impatient - yo), and an ability to replicate an in person experience – online.

  1. Catch up on learning: Revisit courses, join a new program like Momentum or Laying the Foundation, binge your favorite podcasts, and catch up on business books. 

  2. Work on those big projects: Develop systems, create your production manual, hire a marketing VA or automate processes to streamline your operations.

  3. Work on your marketing: Optimize your email sequences, switch to a new email service provider or CRM if needed, and design a new lead magnet pdf or quiz

  4. Prepare for the holiday season: Design a new collection, create inventory for the holidays, and map out your plans for in-person shows and special promotions 

  5. Take a well-deserved break: Take a staycation, work on your mindset, and recharge your energy to avoid burnout and stay motivated for the busy holiday season.

The best course of action for the slow summer months, or whenever business is slow for you, is to take action with intention. Sitting and stressing is not the best use of your time.

Authentic Connection

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - faceless brands are dying. As sales move to the online sphere, social media is shaping buying decisions more than ever. People buy from people.

At the end of the day, sales is about building relationships with your customers.

Gone are the days of target demographics. In an oversaturated online market, it’s all about dialing into the specifics of your Dream Client and standing out in a sea of faceless brands.

The connections you make - through messaging, branding, pricing, customer service, web copy - are what set you apart from the crowd.

Connected Conversion

As a jewelry designer, you may feel afraid to sell. 

It’s okay to admit it; I was too, in the beginning. It took years of flexing my confidence muscle to feel comfortable converting a prospect into a buyer.

Even if you’ve built an authentic connection with your Dream Clients, the sales won’t be rolling in if you’re sitting behind your bench all day.

It takes consistent outreach and excellent customer service to maintain a steady flow of sales. If you’re not getting enough sales, you’re probably not doing the right outreach.

Removal to Scale

You probably want freedom and security in your business, right? The key is to build a business that is not dependent on you for profit.

This is where the big-picture stuff comes in. Systems and automation that free up time and allow you to step back, and long-term planning that can be broken down into bite-sized goals.

Above all, this also includes your community. Whether it be hiring the right people, seeking mentorship, or just connecting with fellow designers - the people around you can make or break your business.

  • A business generates revenue on an ongoing basis, even when you’re not actively working.

I’m often asked: what does it really take for an emerging jewelry brand | designer | maker to successfully sell jewelry online?

It requires 4 things:

  • Strategy
  • Resourcefulness
  • Creativity
  • A Can Do Attitude

Here’s why: There’s a lot of strategy “conversion nuance” involved in getting customers to actually buy from your jewelry website or online channels.

Because of that, you’ve gotta be creative in your approach to selling online, take action to implement your ideas, and resourceful, especially when, things don’t go your way!.

Typically, designers try something once and think: ‘that doesn’t work for me!”

Instead, they should be thinking: “how can I tweak my strategy to make this work for me?”

So, when I hear people out there saying, “I sell jewelry online” –

I’m ready to show them how it’s done…

and proof that with the right strategy and actions, you can sell WAY more than your dinky holiday shows….

The millenial power couple 💃🏻🕺 (giggles) just absolutely crushed their Black Friday Weekend promotion for the first time and they’re here to tell us how.

But first, let me set the stage.

In previous years, Jared and Jeana banked on Etsy sales and live events for a large portion of their Holiday Jewelry Sales.

When a fluke occurrence happened early in 2017 and they got a flood of orders from Etsy, they knew they needed to do “something” to fill in the income gaps between months (sometimes upwards of $10K).

At the time, they were members of the Diamond Insiders Mentorship program and Jared quit his full-time job to support Jeana in the business.

Knowing they could use some outside eyes on their biz, they joined our SOS coaching program and leaned on several of our coaches to help them fill in those gaps this year.

In previous years, they rarely paid attention to Black Friday, BUT they were dropped from their “Best Show” in Seattle so they had to find another way to fill that income gap.

They worked with many of our coaches, including our planning master, Inta, to map out this kick-butt strategy…

I took a sabbatical last year for 6 weeks and went to Europe just for the mental break that I needed to rejigger and recharge.

And if I’d taken better care of myself, I might not have needed to do that.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a great 6 weeks… But how why I arrived at taking it was NOT healthy.

Let me ask… are YOU remembering to reset and recharge?

You can still continue growing your jewelry biz. But what if Nina and I showed you how you can do both?

We’re all capable of managing our time, energy, and stress. 

In our latest podcast, Nina and I share loads of tips to recenter yourself among all of your creative chaos.

I totally wish I talked to Nina before I burned out last year…

A lot of the advice I got was to “slow down and take it easy”. Which, when you’re as passionate about your biz as I am, really isn’t helpful.

I  learned how to treat myself better so my productivity doesn’t tank. Shoutout to Nina for helping me out with that!

Think about all of the important lessons you’ve been taught in your life.

Whether it was from a parent, or a college class, or an elderly person you met in line at the grocery store. Why are those the lessons that stick with you all of your life?

Don’t think too hard on it, because I’m going to give you the answer.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the reason they’ve stuck with you for a lifetime is because they were delivered using the art of storytelling.

Because 65% to 75% of information shared through stories is retained by the people listening to the storytelling as opposed to only 5% of information that is retained through a scripted presentation or the delivery of facts.

And it works the same way in business that it does in life…but I like to call it STORYSELLING when I’m talking selling my jewelry.

Stories create connections. Sales can get a bad rap for being all about pushing and trying to manipulate a potential buyer.

But the truth is if you're a good storyteller you have the opportunity to invite them into your world and show them the story behind why you create what you do in the way that you do it.

It's much easier and nicer feeling and it's not hard. It really isn't.

Blockchain isn’t just about BitCoin.

In fact, cryptocurrencies were made possible because of Blockchain technology!

So what does this have to do with the jewelry and fashion industry?

Blockchain helps give a digital papertrail of each step in the manufacturing and sourcing process of a piece of jewelry.

So this means customers know exactly where the materials are coming from starting from where the metals are mined!

Crazy, right?

To explain it much better than I can, I interviewed three blockchain experts while I was traveling to Chicago!

I have Mark Hanna, the CMO of Richline Group. Mark has been in the jewelry space for over 45 years and has experienced all facets of management, manufacturing, marketing and sales and compliance.

Then there’s Jennifer Dawes who launched her collection Jennifer Dawes Designs in 2000, and has since evolved to become one of the main proponents of sustainable, responsible jewelry while also creating pieces that are magical to wear.

Finally, we have Cristina Villegas. She’s the artisanal mining and sourcing expert or the Director of Mining at Pact. She’s sharing a little bit more about blockchain to find out how Pact's using it, and then our conversation took a little bit of a turn when we started talking about child labor and what Pact is doing about that.
