23 May 2023018 - Mini Musings: Embracing Resuscitation00:27:34

Welcome, dear listener. In today’s mini musing, I’m sharing one of my favorite tools for threshold moments—resuscitation. And I’m gently asking the question, What could it look like to embrace a period of resuscitation with a “yes to myself” mindset?

Using the framework of the window of tolerance, I describe how we might react to stress differently depending on the width of our window. I also share stories from my own life and explore how we can create opportunities to keep our windows of tolerance more open.

Tune in as I discuss:

  • What mini musings are and what I hope they offer you
  • The time I had a food truck come to my house for a different kind of potluck
  • What a resuscitation phase is
  • Some things I experienced in my own resuscitation phase
  • The window of tolerance framework
  • Saying no during resuscitative times in order to say yes to our own wellbeing
  • Building in time for containment

13 Jun 2023021 - Kristin Bosteels: Choosing To Be an Anomaly01:03:20

Welcome, dear ones.

This week we have with us Kristin Bosteels, a woman who has faced life and death multiple times. Her roots are deeper and wider than anything that can be taken from her. She is a well-practiced yogi, a disciple of mindset, and a human on a journey back to herself.

Kristin teaches Yoga on the Inside. Her passion lies in teaching and sharing the therapeutic benefits of yoga with those in need, and using yoga to soften her experience and that of others.

Kristin’s ongoing journey of living with cancer has been an aggressive and enlightening one. But, as she shares with us, she takes a unique approach to managing her diagnosis — choosing to be an anomaly and taking a multi-dimensional approach to her care. In this episode, Kristin also shares the beauty of opening herself up, asking for help, and allowing other people to be a part of her healing, even when it’s difficult to do.

Listen to learn more about:

  • The changes Kristin saw in herself after her first and second cancer diagnoses
  • How sharing experience is more meaningful than sharing advice in response to hard news
  • How Kristin’s mother lives on through her own experiences in her cancer journey
  • The ways Kristin manages the ups and downs of her treatment

28 Mar 2023010 - Mini Musings: Preparation00:32:31

Hello, everyone! Today, I will be talking about the Five Point Sequence, with a focus on the first point: Preparation.

How does your past inform how you currently build preparation into your life?

In this episode, I talk about the power of having a coherent preparation pattern, and how through somatic work we can go back on the timeline (timeline repair) and update and rewire patterning toward something that feels supportive and cohesive.

In the end, I share my inquiry around biohacking for longevity.  What is hyper-preparation (over-efforting control and forgetting to live life while you have it now), and what is coherent preparation? To support these thoughts I offer two poems, one by Max Ehrmann and the other by David Whyte.

In this episode you’ll learn:

• [02:10] The Five Point Sequence by Ray Castellino and used in Alchemical Alignment

• [05:40] Building Preparation into life

• [10:33] Trauma physiology and preparation.

• [15:03] Doing timeline repair to rewire and update patterns in the nervous system.

• [17:10] Is biohacking for longevity hyper preparation or just preparation?

• [21:44] Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann.

• [25:34] What to Remember When Waking, by David Whyte.

• [30:26] Takeaways from this episode.

Quotes:

  • “Not just thinking that I should be able to go from one thing to the next thing to the next. Preparation might even be a pause, ‘I'm going to take a pause. I'm going to notice my resources before I walk into that room, I'm going to notice my feet on the ground. I'm gonna broaden my surroundings. I’m going to notice my breath...’” -Sarah Tacy [07:40]

  • “So if as a child, you felt unsafe when one shot when one parent came home, you probably became a pro at reading the room.” -Sarah Tacy [14:00]

  • “When we get wrinkles, we get grays, and as our bodies become less agile, these are steps towards our big let go.” – Bryan Kest [18:27]
  • “The more of the reserve we have, the better off we are.” – Peter Attia [19:01]
  • “You are a child of the universe.” – Max Ehrmann [24:10]

  •  “What you can plan is too small for you to live.” – David Whyte [26:43]

26 Nov 2024093 - Small Doable Pieces00:18:17

Welcome back to Threshold Moments. Today we’re continuing our exploration of nervous system resilience with the transformative power small doable pieces.

Sometimes when we feel overwhelmed or find ourselves in a trauma response, we slip into all-or-nothing thinking. But typically all we need to do is take one step forward to create nourishing momentum.

Brigit Viksnins calls this "small doable pieces." And in this episode, I share how this practice works and a few ways that small doable pieces have transformed my business, my parenting, and my life.

So if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, underwater, or unable to move forward, I hope you’ll tune in to learn:

  • The interplay between the nervous system and trauma responses
  • How all-or-nothing thinking can leave us stuck in a freeze state
  • The medicine we find in small doable pieces

Because, when we take small doable steps over time, it can change the way we feel, the way we think, and what we believe.

14 Mar 2023008 - Mini Musings: Can We Both Exist?00:15:54

Hello, everyone! Today I will be talking about creation and destruction, as we unpack the question — Where is there health within this pairing and where is there dysfunction?

In this episode, I also explore the relationship of existence and exile within groups and how group ecosystems create opportunities for healthy dynamic mutual growth and dynamic mutual destruction.

And the inquiry at the end is about finding our sovereignty while being a part of an ecosystem.

In this episode you’ll learn:

    • [02:30] Creation and Destruction.
    • [03:00] Disempowerment Triangle: Victim, Perpetrator, and Savior
    • [03:34] Slow health for creation and destruction.
    • [04:01] Medium health for creation and destruction.
    • [05:09] Fast health for creation and destruction.
    • [05:39] Existence.
    • [08:08] Sharing in groups & group dynamics.
    • [10:25] Taking the path of sovereignty. The path to sovereignty is to exist no matter another’s response to us.
    • [12:23] The Empowerment Triangle.
    • [13:15] It’s no longer an all or nothing. There’s a sustainable middle place.

Quotes:

  • “As we grow more into our authentic selves, and as we grow in our capacity to be stable as somebody says something or does something that might normally exile us, we are growing in our capacity to be in this tension field.  We can exist even as somebody else is having hard feelings that might be towards us, something about our very existence that might trigger them. We have the capacity to exist anyway. And that this is part of the path of sovereignty.” – Sarah
  • “Destruction doesn't have to be of my whole self, it does not have to be of my existence, but it can be of parts of myself that could be updated.” – Sarah
  • “We are working to be our sovereign selves in the face of great difficulty in which another person is not working on their awakening. We choose to do so anyway.” -Sarah

08 Aug 2023029 - Brigit Viksnins: Alchemical Alignment01:13:35

Welcome, dear listeners. In this episode, I’m speaking with one of my beloved teachers, Brigit Viksnins.

Brigit is a life partner, a stepmother, mother, and grandmother. She is the creator of the international training program Alchemical Alignment, which is protocol-free, spirit-led, experiential somatic modality that draws on a range of bodywork traditions that she has trained in and is deeply experienced in.

Bridget is also a first-generation Latvian-American from a lineage of healers, midwives, authors, and teachers. Her parents fled from their homeland during World War II, becoming refugee immigrant children under bombs and in the displaced persons camps on their way to the USA. Now Brigit regularly travels to post-Soviet Latvia to relate to the land, eat traditional foods, steep in the wisdom, arts, and crafts of her ancestors, and also share her skills.

Together, Brigit and I have an open, unfolding conversation about trauma resolution, ancestral patterns, stabilizing our nervous systems, calming through co-resonance, and self-love as a relational practice. We also discuss:

  • The journey of Alchemical Alignment
  • Finding Heaven & Hell on earth
  • Cultivating a range of pace & velocity in our lives
  • Breaking trauma resolution into tiny, doable bits
  • The necessity of contraction & having healthy dark in our range
  • Sharing stillness to create co-resonance between bodies
  • When self-love can be self-less

This conversation is full of wisdom, and I hope you’ll listen with an open heart, then visit the Alchemical Alignment website to learn more about any topics you aren’t familiar with.

And it’s a reminder that resourcing our nervous system can change how we relate to our kids, our communities, and everything going on in the world.

06 Jun 2023020 - Mini Musing: Integrating the Update00:21:36

In this week’s Mini Musing, I share reflections from my time as an athlete, sports trainer, and yoga teacher to offer insight on how we can actually change unconscious patterns in our lives.

Listen in to learn why it’s important to observe, process, and upgrade in the moment. And to unpack what John Frappier teaches us — that “We can’t learn new patterns in a state of fatigue.”

I end with reflections on burnout and how necessary self-care is if we want to move from familiar patterns to optimal patterns. And I invite you to join my 21 Days of Untapped Support to begin inviting small moments of rest and of challenge into your days.

05 Nov 2024090 - Resourced: How to Cultivate Nervous System Resilience00:27:52

This week on Threshold Moments we’re doing something a little different.

Instead of releasing a heartfelt interview with a brilliant, soul-centered guest, I’m sharing my own story and offering an introduction to the life-changing work of healing your nervous system.

For the first time, I’m speaking about how a painful back injury led me on a powerful healing journey toward doing so. much. less.

Eventually that guided me toward mind-body-spirit integration through yoga. And I built a very successful business… that I eventually dismantled as I moved through the sleepless portal of becoming a mother.

Now I'm excited to share my story and offer my first nervous system healing program.

I hope you’ll listen to this episode and stick around for our full fall series about nervous system resilience. Then join me in Resourced, my four-month program that begins in January. I can’t wait to support you in 2025.

01 Aug 2023028 - Mini Musing: Your Center00:22:50

Welcome, dear ones. In today’s mini musing, I explore widening our perspective, finding our center, and chakra meditations for self-connection.

I begin by revisiting my reflections on widening and discussing the power of expanding our perspective to help us regulate our system and alleviate feelings of anxiety or threat. Then I explore the importance of narrowing in and finding our center, as both expansion and contraction are necessary for balance and healing.

To support you in returning to center, I share a hand motion and meditation taught to me by Brigit Viksnins and Karen Kenney.

Join me to learn an embodied practice for moving from wide to center, where we’ll travel the chakras together from our crown to our root and back again.

25 Apr 2023014 - Mini Musings: Creating Conditions00:32:25

Welcome, friends. In today’s episode, I’m reflecting on creating the conditions for more easeful nervous system regulation and how we know that healing is happening.

I talk about the Activation Map by Peter Levine, which was updated into the “Three Directions Map,” by Brigit Viskins to include looping. When activation occurs we may have the ability to distract and sooth back down to stabilization, the first direction. We may find ourselves looping in dysregulation, the second direction. Finally, there may be a possibility to go higher into activation without looping and come all the way down to the other side toward completion, integration, and extinction; this is the third direction.

Creating conditions can help support us to move through the entire process. Creating conditions and integrating these new patterns may happen in small pieces over time.

Join me as we explore our somatic experiences and the power of pause, choice, community, distance, self-care and boundary repair as conditions for well-being.

07 Feb 2023002 - Mini Musings: The Map that Inspired Threshold Moments00:21:16

In this Mini Musings episode I share with you the map that inspired Threshold Moments. The Cycle of Awareness map was created by Don and Amba Stapleton PhD. I share this map at the beginning of most of my trainings because I find it highly orienting.

When I feel lost, this map helps me see where I've been, where I am and where I'm going. If only it could let me know how long I'll be in any one stage! Maybe grab an astrologer for that?

I hope this is as helpful to you as it is to me.

Peace and blessings,

Sarah

The Cycle of Awareness is usually drawn in a circle 🙂

    1. Normal: Every day life
    2. Challenge Interrupts Balance: This can be a split second in which life changes such as a diagnosis, an accident, or disruptive information. It can also be something that is incrementally changing so you don't notice the change. You may start to feel agitated in your every day life and you may not be able to pin point why. One morning you may look in the at your partner, your job or yourself and feel like you're looking at a stranger. You may feel a pull toward another life or a big leap even though it would mean destroying your current life structure. This is a Threshold.
    3. Confusion and Chaos: You try to live life as you did before but it's just not working. You try to flex your muscles to control outcomes, but your whole being feels out of alignment. You try using the tools you've always used but they're not working. This place is about max effort and with a negative return. This is the place the ego tries to block the soul's journey and cling on to what it knows.
    4. *The Fertile Void: This is the place of surrender. It's the dark night of the soul. It's the place in which you feel powerless and can't make sense of what's going on yet. Most people feel lost in this place. You can't see the silver lining yet. In the unknown so many outcomes are possible. *Fertile Void was coined by Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls.
    5. Inner Resources: Insight and Inspiration: You start to see possibilities that you could not see before. Because you have shed layers, because you have let go of old securities, because you've been wide open to signs and insights, you can see what wasn't visible before. You begin to gain more energy.
    6. Integration: You begin building a new life with your new understandings.
    7. Evolution into a New State of Being: You are now living a life that feels highly aligned with your soul. There's a sense of authenticity, maybe even pride for the journey it took to get here.
    8. Normal: Your evolved state becomes your normal state and inevitably the cycle begins again with new lessons and life experiences.

Our conversation spans topics from gender to athleticism to endurance to social justice. And at it’s core, I think it’s about the ways that small steps make a big difference over time — both in finding our innermost selves and in straying farther from who we truly are.

Kirsten also shares their process of claiming themselves as non-binary and what that did for them as they went into a 100-mile race.

Tune in to learn how a run of any distance or decision of any size can radically change your life when paired with a deeper intention. I hope you’ll listen and enjoy.

28 Feb 2023006 - Mini Musings: The Seasonal Qualities of Life00:15:34
Hello, everyone!

Today’s episode challenges the message that consistent production or having fun, exciting news to share year-round is normal.

Hearing about seasonal energy may normalize how you are feeling instead of how you think you should feel. Since we ourselves are nature, it makes sense that we too will experience energies that reflect the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

This episode serves as a layer of integration for episode two where I spoke about the Cycles of Awareness map, and acts as preparation for episode seven with Kate Northrup as we speak quite a lot about how to prepare for and be in winter energy.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • [01:43] Let’s start with Spring.
  • [03:12] The Summer of our lives.
  • [06:25] Fall: Saying no and preparing for Winter.
  • [09:32] Winter: The Fertile Void.
  • [10:11] Having things to fall back on.
  • [12:21] Leaning into the season.
