In this first episode, Seb and Verity chat to bassist/bass guitarist Phil Donnelly. Conversation ranges from how he started in the profession to Nashville... and Pizza Express. Phil talks about his discomfort in ‘gig chat’ which leads to a discussion on potential (and probably inadvisable) new ways for Phil to present himself in performances. Thanks to Barney Philpott (@barnabyphilpott) for his trombone (and euphonium) playing on the theme tune. Seb and Verity have resisted the urge to hot foot it up to Durham and are back for episode 8. This week’s guest is violinist and arranger extraordinaire, Michelle Taylor-Cohen. Recorded in a bustling Royal Festival Hall foyer, they discuss Michelle’s ingenious methods to reimagine pop tracks for strings and her role as the "Fifth Beatle" in the Estilo String Quartet. They take a nostalgia trip back to London 2012 and have a digression about tv sports theme tunes. This week Seb and Verity have a hotline to Canada to chat to critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Basia Bulat. Basia talks all about her fantastic new album "Are You in Love?", which was partly recorded at Joshua Tree and led to some integral collaborations with both the wind and desert dust. They chat improvising at festivals, Bach and Basia indulges Verity’s new found love of the autoharp by demonstrating a few of her favourites. 08 Jun 2020 | 10. Ektor Rivera | 01:07:32
Celebrations are on at Three In a Bar HQ as they reach episode 10, and what better way to mark this milestone than with a chat to Puerto Rico’s finest, Ektor Rivera. Seb and Verity catch up via zoom with singer/dancer/actor/artist Ektor at his LA home. He earns serious guest points early on declaring his new found love for London, having travelled there for the first time last year to play Juan Peron in Evita at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
During their conversation Ektor chats about his time on Broadway, a house visit from J-Lo and returning to Puerto Rico for an exciting new production of ‘In The Heights’, as well as a major solo art exhibition in St Juan. Seb and Verity delve deep into Ektor’s past, unearthing some excellent anecdotes involving a cassette tape, a Polaroid, Emilio Estefan and some questionable dreadlocks. / / / SHOW NOTES Twitter: @EktorRivera Instagram: @ektorrivera EKTOR AND JENNIFER LOPEZ - QVIVA THE CHOSEN JENNIFER LOPEZ SUPER BOWL 2020 / / / Subscribe to: THREE IN A BAR'S EXCELLENT SONGS (SPOTIFY PLAYLIST) Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon!Hosted on Acast. 15 Jun 2020 | 11. Kelly Pratt | 01:25:22
In the third of their transatlantic trilogy, Seb and Verity chat to composer, arranger and multi instrumentalist Kelly Pratt. Kelly talks touring and orchestrating for David Byrne and St. Vincent, Beirut and Father John Misty. They chat about favourite festivals (remember them?!) and great venues. Verity tries to get Kelly to dish the dirt on the different character traits of musicians around the world whilst he tries to remain diplomatic. Kelly talks about his solo projects, including a homage of sorts to a much derided album from his childhood... Jimmy Buffett’s "Songs You Know By Heart". One of the tracks is entitled "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Nuff said. Kelly offers some excellent advice on composing for film and TV and he gives some great suggestions for the Three In a Bar Spotify playlist. 22 Jun 2020 | 12. Jude Rogers | 01:24:53
Breaking news... this week, novice podcasters Seb Philpott and Verity Simmons invite journalist, interviewer, reviewer and broadcaster Jude Rogers for a chat. "Have they lost their minds?" we hear you ask. It's like Leyton Orient taking on Real Madrid. Luckily for them, Jude is both encouraging and forgiving and has countless tales to tell from her years interviewing and reviewing pop stars and musicians. Amongst other things, they discuss Mercury Award panel disagreements, interviewing Justin Timberlake on honeymoon (Jude's, not Justin's) and guests, both rude and delightful. Jude offers excellent advice on getting the most out of an interviewee (all carefully noted). She introduces Seb and Verity to new artists and bands, many of which are featured on the Three In A Bar Spotify playlist. 29 Jun 2020 | 13. Charlotte Harding | 01:23:19
Thirteen, unlucky for some? Not at Three In A Bar because their guest this week is award winning composer and saxophonist Charlotte Harding. Charlotte chats to Seb and Verity about her collaborations with BalletBoyz, Paraorchestra and Onyx Brass. The term ‘Orchestral Synthesizer’ gets bandied about by Verity - don’t worry, Charlotte clarifies what she’s wanging on about! There is misinformation about clubbing, discussions on dance music, leg warmers and some shocking discoveries about mutes. Yet again, Seb and Verity commit to a cause they will struggle to see through (see presents for guests). This time it’s starting a campaign for Charlotte to play ‘The Local Hero’ as Newcastle United run on to the pitch at St. James’ Park. Here come the bears! This week Seb and Verity are joined by Kevin Jones, one half of British folk rock band Bear’s Den. The release of this podcast coincides with the launch of Bear’s Den’s latest album Fragments.... It’s almost as if they had planned it! Recorded in late 2019, Kev talks about the band’s recent tours, from European stadiums supporting Neil Young to driving a land rover venue to venue around the wilds of Scotland. They discuss set design - with or without the inclusion of glitter canons, recording and leaving a bit of his heart in Seattle. They also share notes on the dubious origins of the Turbo Negroni. 13 Jul 2020 | 15. Rachael Lander | 01:16:55
This week Seb and Verity are joined by freelance cellist, Rachael Lander. Rachael discusses her battles with alcohol addiction and anxiety, which led to an extended break from playing and consequently entering recovery - all whilst in her early twenties. Since then, Rachael has returned to playing and has an extremely successful career working extensively in the West End, orchestral freelancing and as a session player. She credits her time in Raven string quartet for her return to music, finding a love for performing again... although a certain egg throwing incident brought these endeavours to an abrupt end. Rachael is a patron of Music Support charity (see link below). She is a truly inspirational person and her openness about issues that for years have been taboo throughout the music industry make a refreshing change. Regardless of whether you have suffered with addiction and anxiety, Rachael’s experiences and coping strategies are beneficial listening for all. /// Show Notes Instagram: @rachaellander84 Musician’s Union Support, Health and Well-being pages Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon!Hosted on Acast. 20 Jul 2020 | 16. Amos Miller | 01:21:23
It’s episode 16 and it sure is a sweet one as today’s guest is trombone behemoth and recently appointed head of brass at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Amos Miller. Amos chats to Seb and Verity about online final recitals and his huge respect and excitement for the next generation of brass players passing through the conservatoire. He also tells them about his former lives as a psychology student (very useful) and a violinist (not so much). Amos talks about his internationally acclaimed quintet, Onyx Brass and their exciting upcoming projects, one of which involves previous Three In A Bar guest, Charlotte Harding. He also chats about Royal Ballet Sinfonia - with whom Amos is principal - and his renewed love for Swan Lake. They discuss Amos’ fantastic photography, which he somehow manages to fit into his packed schedule! 27 Jul 2020 | 17. Cat Parker | 01:13:15
We interrupt our regular broadcasts for a round the table chat with violinist and yoga guru Cat Parker. Think of this as interval drinks or a post concert catch up if you will..... Recorded back in January in a bustling kitchen in East Dulwich, Cat talks to Seb and Verity about a whole host of things including her experiences living in Paris and what led her there, future plans to potentially set up a yoga retreat In a rural French Idyll and bribing local mayors. Cat talks about training as a yoga teacher and encountering various interesting and sometimes bonkers takes on it around the world. She does a great job of selling the benefits of Yoga to even the perennially unbendy Verity and Seb discusses having revelations whilst doing hip rotations in Mayo Park. They catch up in mid July via zoom as Cat is in the process of house selling. She talks about uncovering old photos, videos and potential spy equipment....Cat also looks forward to moving on and finding a country pad that is part Jilly Cooper part The Archers. They discuss unearthing old repertoire through lockdown and attempting to relearn with varying success. At the very start of the interview there is a brief cameo from fellow violinist wunderkind, Millie Ashton who drops by to make a fish finger sandwich. /// Show notes Instagram: @catparkerviolin Hosted on Acast. 03 Aug 2020 | 18. Irwin Sparkes | 01:33:45
Warning, this episode contains unprecedented levels of Sid James style cackling emanating from Verity...brace yourselves. It’s episode 18 and look who’s dropped in to welcome them to the age of maturity....it’s none other than Hoosiers front man, Irwin Sparkes. Irwin also wears a magnificent new metaphorical hat for his solo alter ego White Tail Falls, releasing his album Age of Entitlement back in May to critical acclaim. Irwin chats about making his first album - the process starting back in 2016, writing for other artists, the highs and lows of being in a commercially successful band and navigating panel shows....made harder when a famous comedian nicks your gags (he’s not bitter). They talk about his stint at the Edinburgh Festival, existential crisis brought on by live streaming and Irwin impressively scatters some high class self referencing throughout the podcast. He tries to draw Seb and Verity into a clangfest but neither will break the unspoken code. There is the usual hard hitting journalism we’ve become accustomed to on Three In A Bar with discussions about how Eastenders and Coronation Street are negotiating the Corona Virus crisis and which is better, brass or strings? At the end of the podcast, Irwin gives a beautiful performance of Fake News and Body Weight from his new album. /// Show notes Instagram: @irwinsparkes Twitter: @IrwinofSparkes Irwin’s appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks Hosted on Acast. 10 Aug 2020 | 19. Laura Bangay | 01:15:43
It’s episode 19 and who better to complement a hot summer’s day than the perennially radiant, Laura Bangay. Musical director/keyboard whiz/accordion hater Laura chats to Seb and Verity having had an extended period of Covid-19 lockdown isolation. They find out what she’s been doing to combat boredom, including a new found passion for kickboxing. Laura talks about her extensive work as a children’s MD, including a joyous five year stint on Matilda and most recently on the brand new musical The Boy In The Dress. There is a nod to her childhood self, who’s mind would have been blown at the prospect of working with Robbie Williams! They discuss Laura’s roll as an MD - a position in which women are still very much in the minority and suggest ways to rectify this imbalance. Laura also talks about nightmares caused by misfiring clicks, her turbulent relationship with the accordion and the potential for being bankrolled by her successful protégés....the latter may have or may not have been an idea perpetrated by Seb and Verity. /// Show Notes Twitter: @laurabangay Instagram @laurabangay ”Bread and Roses” from Pride, Musical direction-Laura Bangay Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon!Hosted on Acast. 17 Aug 2020 | 20. Shane Cullinan | 01:14:53
As Three In A Bar hits it’s twenties now seemed like a good time to try out a spot of blind dating. Introduced to us by the fabulous Michelle Taylor-Cohen (see episode 8), this week’s guest is composer, arranger and lyricist Shane Cullinan. Shane chats about his ensemble Tonic Fold and some of their early gigs, including the first Nottingham Pride - entitled Pink Lace, a show following a naked man covered in ultraviolet baby teats and a vomiting flautist. Since then the gigs have got rather more glamorous and have led to collaborations with the likes of David McAlmont, Rachel Tucker and Kathy Burke. They discuss Shane’s critically acclaimed oratorio, The Pieta, a beautiful piece set in Manchester and depicting a mother’s devastation at the loss of her son to street crime. Shane talks about some of the techniques he employed in the process of writing and scoring this as well as writing the libretto. Seb and Verity ask Shane about working with Kathy Burke again, writing the music for her West End production of Lady Windermere’s Fan. Included in the score are fan breakbeats and funk bassoon...words you never thought you’d hear together. /// Show notes Twitter: @musofunk Instagram: @shanecullinanmusic Facebook: Shane Cullinan Music Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon!Hosted on Acast. This week Seb and Verity depart from usual service to reflect on the first twenty episodes of Three In A Bar in a loosely structured waffle - see intro and outro sections of all twenty episodes so far. Along with their own favourite moments, they hear from a number of the listeners about their own personal highlights. It won’t surprise you that Seb and Verity deviate from the course throughout, discussing hard hitting topics such as S Club 7, Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and some musing on what Andrew Lloyd Webber might be up to currently. 31 Aug 2020 | 21. Rachel Rowntree | 01:14:31
C’est un invité magnifique! This week Seb and Verity are joined by violinist and broadcaster, Rachel Rowntree. Be honest, who hasn’t thought to themselves maybe now’s the time to up sticks and start again somewhere glamorous and exciting abroad? Well, rather than giving in after numerous failed attempts at Duolingo and booking a holiday, Rachel actually made the move to Paris ten years ago and has carved out a hugely successful career there. Impressive eh? Seb and Verity caught up with Rachel in the midst of a house move from Paris to Lille where her family will now be based. Surrounded by a wall of boxes, she talks about her work with Les Sieclés, an orchestra set up by François-Xavier Roth, and the familial feeling of being in the ensemble since it’s earliest days. They also discuss presenting education projects in French to hormonal teenagers, the perks of being a freelancer in France and some dubious colloquialisms she’s picked up along the way. Rachel discusses her work as a broadcaster, introducing concerts for the French channel Mezzo TV. This is a job she clearly loves....despite the hidden challenges presented by the occasional need for Chinese name pronunciation! Seb and Verity jump at the chance for yet another new campaign that ultimately won’t last beyond a couple of posts on Instagram....will they ever lean? // Show Notes Hosted on Acast. 07 Sep 2020 | 22. Laura Melhuish, Ric Ashton & Millie Ashton | 01:38:11
It’s a momentous week at Three In a Bar......not only is this the first episode recorded where all parties are in the same space since February but it is also our first musical dynasty. Violinist Laura Melhuish, horn player Ric Ashton and their daughter, Millie Ashton (wunderkind violinist) invite Seb and Verity into their fabulous home for a chat, great snacks and much hilarity. The scene is set in the Ashton/Melhuish garden with Ric and Laura's other two daughters and assorted friends coming and going - a joyous contrast to the usual zoom set up. They discuss online final recital ordeals - Millie having just completed her undergraduate and how with twenty plus years attendance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama between them perhaps a blue plaque is in order? Conversation ranges from negotiating family life as freelance musicians to eating like Tudors during lockdown. They debate whether snakebite and black is legal and hear about Ric’s days partying on the beach in the South of France with Elton John. Seb and Verity quiz Laura on the illustrious list of artists and films she’s played for over the years....including a slightly cringe worthy exchange with Posh Spice on a Spice Girls tour. They broach the subject of fashion choices, with some strong looks being uncovered.....Think Laura Ashley dresses and in Seb’s case, a studded choker. 14 Sep 2020 | 23. Ed Pascall | 01:21:08
It’s episode 23 and we are back in South London chatting to the go to guy for soloists, conductors and errant orchestral players who can’t find the toilets in any given venue....it’s senior artist manager at Askonas Holt, Ed Pascall. This is the second outing Seb and Verity have made to meet Ed after a failed attempt in a Wetherspoons in December 2019. Delighted that he’d humour them again, conversation includes an insight into the kind of super fans classical musicians attract - think handcrafted insects and insanely polite heckling. There is a long and involved discussion on Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, as well as the potential for Panini sticker albums for orchestras and conductors - niche or what?! This is the first of two special episodes charting the Let Music Live events in London and Birmingham on 6 October 2020, highlighting the current threat to thousands of jobs in the freelance music industry. Seb and Verity have an exclusive chat to event founder, violinist and superwoman, Jessie Murphy. Jessie discusses her inspiration for creating this protest, how it’s grown into such a huge movement and what the plans for tuesday’s events are. Having actively avoided talking about the Covid crisis in detail, now seemed to be an important time to highlight the plight of musicians and support this cause. However, she took an extended break in her mid to late 20’s to have her family and support her husband’s flourishing career. 12 Oct 2020 | 26. Wine and Music with Eliza Parkes | 01:30:23
This week we go off piste (that’s right, p-i-s-t-e) with a visit from wine aficionado and co-owner of Yardarm Leyton, Eliza Parkes. Eliza selects four fantastic wines to compliment Seb and Verity’s four music choices and they spend a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon tasting the wine and discussing the music. Sometimes work is so trying eh? Be reassured in the knowledge that the spittoon is used liberally so the conversation remains coherent. In between each track, Seb and Verity chat to Eliza about her path into wine specialism, the relationship between the senses and memory and most importantly, her appearances on Sunday Brunch. Stay tuned to the very end to hear Eliza’s choice and the extraordinary wine she brings as a gift from her own personal collection.....chin, chin! Why not make this a full interactive experience? There is a link to the Spotify playlist for this episode below along with a list of the wines tasted. 19 Oct 2020 | 27. Dr Arun Menon | 01:13:15
This week’s guest is half viola player/half anaesthetist, Dr Arun Menon - the most niche superhero the world has ever seen...... Having suffered kidney failure in 2005, Arun made the difficult decision to put his hugely successful freelance career on hold and go back into education to begin the epic journey into medicine - his training began in 2006 and he is still three and a half years away from being a fully qualified anaesthetist. During this time, Arun was frequently studying/on the wards by day and performing at the Royal Opera House and with Birmingham Royal Ballet by night. Seb and Verity chat with Arun about his duel career - the opportunity to draw similarities between viola playing and putting people to sleep is too hard to resist, particularly for Verity who is in full ‘end of the pier entertainer’ mode. Arun talks about the intricacies of brain surgery, what it’s like trialling for principal viola jobs and stereotypes for different medical specialists...he’s irritatingly diplomatic! Seb refers to his specialist medical knowledge (Breaking Bad) to quiz Arun on Nitrous Oxide.....unfortunately it seems Arun didn’t use that syllabus in his training. /// Show Notes Instagram: vlamenon Twitter: @amenondr Hosted on Acast. 26 Oct 2020 | 28. Chris Augustine | 01:31:41
Joining us in the bar - or rather Seb’s living room this week - is trombone Adonis, Christopher Augustine. Chris is currently based in Cardiff where he is sub principal trombonist with WNO. Seb and Verity catch up with him as a small window appears in his busy schedule whilst he is briefly in London for a Chineke! project. They chat about early inspirations, Chris’ unlikely transition from soprano recorder to trombone and his dream of an idyllic retirement in Cornwall. Chris talks Seb and Verity through his daily routine, which includes an intense fitness regime and serious levels of discipline (4 boiled eggs for a breakfast side dish anyone?!). They also discuss his personal experiences as a black classical musician and whether it has affected his career/musical education. This episode is brought to you under the influence of high levels of sugar as all involved had consumed Seb’s notorious Curly Whirly cake.....words per minute are through the roof. /// Show notes Chineke! at the Royal Festival Hall, Radio 3 Broadcast Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon!Hosted on Acast. It’s a Three In A Bar double whammy this week with clarinettist, presenter, workshop leader and teacher Jessie Grimes. Seb and Verity visit Jessie in her South London flat - also home to her hugely popular Homemade Garden Jam series. In the first episode, Jessie chats about her lockdown project which involved chamber music, audience participation and tomato juggling. They also discuss her early years in Ireland, folk music (including some fantastic live whistle playing and less impressive attempts to decipher folk notation by the others) and grunge fashion choices. Jessie talks about the joys of performing with her multi award winning ensemble - the Jacquin Trio, learning to value yourself personally and professionally and tactics for beating the winter lockdown blues. /// Show Notes Click here to join the Members' Club on Patreon!Hosted on Acast. 09 Nov 2020 | 30. Rob Brydon | 01:25:27
SOUND THE ALARMS, IT’S A NATIONAL TREASURE ALERT! This week Seb and Verity are joined by comedian, singer and actor Rob Brydon, who invited them into his beautiful garden for a hilarious and frank conversation. Rob regales them them with such tales as filming in Las Vegas with Tom Jones, receiving wise words from a Bee Gee, battling Steve Coogan on a lilo and the pain of unrequited love in school musicals. They chat about Rob’s tour, A Night of Songs and Laughter, and how Seb ended up in his and. He tells them what still makes him nervous and how he’s gaining confidence and improving his (already ruddy excellent) singing. Rob treats Seb and Verity to a healthy smattering of his legendary Tom Jones and Elvis impressions... along with an impressive bass effect, a touch of trumpet and an infamous Nirvana guitar line. /// Show Notes Rob Brydon Wikipedia (https://tinyurl.com/yxuflcll) Rob Brydon Live Website (https://robbrydon.live/) The Trip - Brydon & Coogan Sing The Winner Takes It All (https://tinyurl.com/y6fkvcaq) Rob and Tom Jones Sing The Jungle Book (https://tinyurl.com/y68fsqen) Barry Islands in the Stream - Red Nose Day song 2009 (https://tinyurl.com/y3gg5nvq) Paul Herbert Musical Director (https://twitter.com/paulhbtmusic) Hosted on Acast. 16 Nov 2020 | 31. Alice Kent | 01:13:53
It’s all about that bass, ‘bout that bass (you get the picture) with this week’s guest, Alice Kent. Seb and Verity chat to Alice in early November as she’s putting the final touches to the latest video in her YouTube series Alice’s Musical Galaxy. She talks about becoming tech savvy, green screen issues and how she’s making string teaching exciting and vibrant for players of all ages and abilities. Its a wide ranging conversation - at times underscored by the dulcet tones of tromboning from Alice’s partner, John Stokes... They cover everything from the Benedetti Foundation (Alice has tutored for them since it’s inception) to self defence lessons via folded Ross Kemp. They discuss the adaptability of musicians and the highs and lows of a busy freelance career. Alice has played for virtually every professional UK orchestra you could name. There is much discussion of Alice's incredible eyewear - jazz glasses no less - and a slightly awkward moment where Seb discovers he’d been at junior college with Alice for a couple of years and not realised. 23 Nov 2020 | 32. Anna Whitehouse (Mother Pukka) | 01:24:42
We’re back with this week’s episode in 3, 2, 1 ......... and our guest is Heart DJ, journalist, author, podcaster, campaigner and influencer, Anna Whitehouse. Seb and Verity drop in to Anna’s East London offices, lukewarm cava in hand, for a chat about the various strands of her eclectic career. She talks them through her journey from Practical Caravan magazine (tow bar specialist) to becoming host of a Heart show with a multi million listenership. They also discuss her unashamed love of pop, the art of a slick 15 second segue, giving relationship advice to Darren Day and working with a Spice Girl. Anna chats candidly about her struggles with post-natal depression at a time when she was applying for her dream job in radio and the huge anxiety and pressure this created. She talks about pivotal moments that have shaped her career decisions and inspired some of her incredible campaigns, namely Flex Appeal. In an unexpected U-turn, Seb and Verity chat with Anna about social media as a force for good (they turn on a penny, that pair) and Anna gives some excellent advice on how we can all create a positive online presence. Thanks to the aforementioned cava, Anna tells us a great story about trying to pull H from Steps at V Festival. It’s episode 33 and Seb and Verity head south of the river to chat to trombonist, co founder of the Old Dirty Brasstards and all round top bloke, Chris Smith. We don’t like favouritism here at Three In A Bar but boy, what a great host Chris was! In what felt as close to a social event as you get these days the wine was flowing and conversation covered Glastonbury - it may be the first time ever the world famous festival has been compared to Wigan - Spotify algorithms, the inception of the Brasstards and their speedy path to success. Chris reminisces about his days at Junior Academy and they talk about their varied early experiences of singing in choirs....you genuinely won’t believe which of the three sang at the Proms. Verity’s mind is blown by some 80’s TV trivia and Seb reveals the difficulties he faced googling the ungoogleable Chrs Smith. They quiz Chris on his extensive knowledge of Indie music, in particular his love of the Manic Street Preachers and they look to the future with what might be on the cards for ODB in the coming months. 04 Jan 2021 | 36. Lizzie Ball | 01:17:40
Happy New Year! After a Christmas break and some slight technical hitches (Verity couldn’t remember her Macbook password) we are back with a fantastic guest to kick off 2021...It’s musician, concert producer, violinist, vocalist and advisor and educator on musical and theatrical projects, Lizzie Ball. Lizzie chats to Seb and Verity about the Classical Kicks concert series she curates, their residency at Ronnie Scott’s (which brings together a hugely diverse range of genres) and how she wooed a bagpipe player in Edinburgh to come to London and play Metallica. No mean feat! They discuss Lizzie’s work with her childhood hero, Nigel Kennedy and what an impact he has had on her career. Verity tries to draw to mind an incident involving Nigel and Gordon The Gopher on Going Live..... anyone else remember this? Lizzie talks about touring with Jeff Beck, coping with the pressures of leading the live recording of Liam Gallagher’s MTV Unplugged album and Corrido, her immersive piece based on the life and times of Frieda Kahlo. Somehow, alongside all of this, Lizzie has recently qualified as a life coach and tells Seb and Verity about her passion to combine this with her performing and production work. 11 Jan 2021 | 37. Bob Knight | 01:30:32
This week Seb and Verity chat to drummer, MD and fixer, Bob Knight. Bob selflessly takes time out from homeschooling to escape - sorry travel - to his studio for their Zoom convo. Bob has great stories and anecdotes about some of the legions of musicians he’s worked with over the years.....from having his Cajón blessed by Nicole Scherzinger, to standing in his pants with Sting via a joyous stint as MD on the Charlotte Church Show. They ask Bob about working with his hero, James Taylor (not to be confused with the James Taylor Quartet....who he’s also worked with!) and the combination of excitement and nerves this created. He talks about starting out as a fixer, which involved disposable camera theft and a handmade scrapbook of artists. Bob has excellent advice for anyone starting out in this field as well as an insight into the perils of large scale fixing for megastars’ world tours - nerves of steel required! 18 Jan 2021 | 38. Christof Van Der Ven | 01:15:32
This week Seb and Verity jump back into cyberspace to chat to London based, Dutch Singer/Songwriter and member of Bear’s Den, Christof Van Der Ven. Christof has recently signed with Peermusic and talks about exciting times ahead this opportunity will afford him, writing and recording new material and collaborating with other artists. He’s also teaching himself piano with some big targets! Christof discusses growing up in the Netherlands, busking in Galway, meeting his musical hero and an unfortunate incident at the US border that forms the story behind his song ‘From Montreal’. Seb and Verity also ask him about his other life as a chef and get some great food tips. This unfortunately leads Verity to tell her Little Chef story AGAIN.... They chat about how Christof came to join Bear’s Den and he talks candidly about the period of anxiety and stress he suffered in his early days with the band. Thankfully, with the support of his band mates he came through the other side. Hearing Christof talk about performance anxiety so candidly is both reassuring and refreshing for anyone who might have experienced or be experiencing this themselves. Christof plays two songs - Bravais Arc from his album You Were the Place, and Big Men At Heart which features on his recent Reworks EP. They are a treat not to be missed. 25 Jan 2021 | 39. Tom Carlson | 01:14:02
This week Seb and Verity are crossing the Atlantic (virtually) again for a chat with tour manager, production manager and co-founder of Music Runs, Tom Carlson. They caught up with Tom on 19 Jan 2021 - the day before Joe Biden’s inauguration. Tom was feeling a mixture of relief and nervous expectancy about the following day, hoping for an excitement-free event. Tom tells great stories from some of the many tours he has worked on, including weird and wonderful excursions in a mini van with David Byrne (Think a Creationist museum in Cincinnati and the former residence of a sex obsessed poet who invented fascism....links below!), a paid holiday in Bali with the St Vincent tour and wild parties with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Tom makes his feelings on festivals very clear....let’s just say, he’s not the greatest fan. Conversely, he and Seb both nostalgically recount stories of joyous times on tour in Japan. They discuss Music Runs Charity, set up by Tom last year to support struggling independent venues and promoters in the US. Tom talks about some of the artists and playlists they contributed, there are some absolute belters, it’s well worth checking out! They also talk running on tour and the aesthetic beauty of the official Father John Misty Leggings. It’s Episode 40 and Seb and Verity return to their orchestral roots this week to chat to viola player and presenter Amy Thomas. Amy has been a member of the CBSO since 2009 and during #lockdown1 she turned her hand to presenting a series of behind the scenes videos for the orchestra. She is also a member of the Stringcredibles Quartet who specialise in performing, training and running protects for young people. Conversation covers trialling for orchestras (both as trialer and trialist) and lockdown videos with her trumpeter husband, Alan Thomas. Think high production value, tense moments and a rug on the kitchen table with baked bean tins giving the illusion of movement! Amy talks about her extensive costume habit; on stage, in the lockdown videos, and running dressed as full banana. They also discuss their love/hate relationships with YouTube including Dan TDM, Stampy Cat, and an old man painting his fence. This week on the X Fac......whoops, sorry wrong show. Let’s try again: For episode 41 of Three In A Bar, Seb and Verity are joined by platinum album selling, 2010 X Factor champion Matt Cardle. Matt spent the early part of the ‘10s firmly in the public eye and achieved huge commercial success. He talks candidly about the ups and downs of this period in his life and about the joy of regaining control of his career, now able to create music he believes in. Matt has some great stories from his X Factor days, including nerve wrenching audition experiences, dubious song choices, vomiting on a man lift on the live tour and the aroma notes of Rihanna. He also discusses a cringe-worthy experience at the Kerrang Awards, his frustration at the lack of support from Syco and Sony post-X Factor and how he’s moved on with his career. Matt chats about performing on the West End stage, conquering self doubt and being an overly polite Pontius Pilate. They discuss Matt’s new single, Purple Crayon, his forthcoming album and plans for the future, finding a label with his best interests at heart and enjoying music again. 15 Feb 2021 | 42. Jennie Brown | 00:56:42
This week Seb and Verity chat to a true London Symphony Orchestra legend, cellist Jennie Brown. Jennie joined the LSO in 1982 and is currently the longest serving female player, having been one of only two women in the orchestra when she arrived. She started her career getting a job at the Royal Opera House whilst still in her fourth year at the Royal Academy....not bad eh?! Jennie discusses working with John Williams on Return of the Jedi, Sir Colin Davis and the legendary trumpeter Maurice Murphy.....you may not recognise his name but you’ll definitely have heard him playing on any number of epic movie soundtracks. They also chat about her very first opera at ROH with none other than Luciano Pavarotti, being the third generation in her family to be a member of the LSO and a sickening experience for Jennie when a top fixer called and she completely lost her voice.....pre mobile phones and diary services, eurgh. Seb and Verity try to dig some dirty from the so-called "bad old days" in the LSO and - despite Jennie being extremely discreet - hear a few snippets of what that title alluded to. 22 Feb 2021 | 43. Iestyn Davies | 01:30:14
This week Seb and Verity chat to multi award-winning, internationally renowned countertenor Iestyn Davies. It just so happens that Iestyn and Verity were at school together so this podcast acts as a catch up after 23 years, gulp. Iestyn was due to be singing the lead in Giulio Cesare at the Met on the evening they recorded, a run which was obviously scuppered by Covid. He chats about his frustrations and despondency this lockdown but also glimmers of hope with exciting projects on the horizon. Iestyn talks about his low-key professional debut at Zurich Opera conducted by Nicholas Harncourt and singing alongside Jonas Kaufman....no big deal right? They also discuss his stint in Farinelli and the King on Broadway, at the Globe theatre and in the West End, including tales of corpsing and Kris Akabusi. At at the end of their conversation, Seb gets a short lesson from Iestyn on improving his falsetto.....it’s fairly harrowing and should possibly come with a health warning. 01 Mar 2021 | 44. Dan West | 01:02:47
Episode 44 is brought to you by the power of the unstable internet connection.... This week Seb and Verity chat to Canadian bass trombonist Dan West. Dan is a member of the highly acclaimed, virtuosic brass group Septura and one of Seb’s fellow Brasstards. He spent five years in the band for Phantom of the Opera, freelances with all the major UK orchestras and has played on a huge number of film sessions, including Dunkirk and Avengers: Endgame. Despite a number of awkward silences where Seb and Verity have to decide if the internet has frozen or just landed an ill-timed joke, they have a fulsome and fun chat with Dan. They discuss early musical beginnings in Calgary, marching bands and reacclimatising in Texas. There are shared reminiscences of joyous dinners in the West End on matinee days.....monkey fingers anyone?! Dan talks about returning to full time freelancing after a long run on Phantom, some of the epic film sessions he’s played on and the exciting prospect of getting back to playing to live audiences again. 15 Mar 2021 | 44a. Mid-March Waffle and Iestyn Davis Patreon Episode | 00:38:38
Ok, ok......this is not the new guest we promised in this week’s episode BUT it is a whole extra bonus edition with internationally renowned countertenor and star of episode 43, Iestyn Davies. Total bonus right?! As you will hear in Seb and Verity’s opening waffle, the past few weeks have been tricky to say the least. However, there are exciting episodes and events afoot which they share with you as well as an insight into the wonderful, wide ranging benefits of becoming a Three In A Bar Patreon (link below). The main feature of this edition is the previously ‘Patreon only’ Iestyn Davies extras. Iestyn chats about the fateful end to his oboe playing days, they share less than impressive piano lesson stories and Seb tells Iestyn about first hearing the countertenor voice. Seb and Verity are back next week with a new guest, that’s a promise! For the time being we hope you enjoy this extra slice of Iestyn Davies! Excerpt at the end from "Eternal Source of Light Devine", performed by Iestyn Davis, Alison Balsom, Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert. We’re back in the room, and not just any room but the boardroom at Rich Mix in East London to meet this week’s guest - Artistic Director of the Irene Taylor Trust, Sara Lee. Seb and Verity chat to Sara about her fantastic and inspiring work with ITT, creating music inside prisons and out in the community working with ex-prisoners, vulnerable young people and teenage parents. Sara talks about the online 25th anniversary concert (see link below) which they managed to record with under 24 hrs to spare before the country went into full lockdown.....challenge Anneka eat yer heart out! They discuss Sara’s first job as a music teacher in Wormwood Scrubs, including visits from shell-shocked ABRSM examiners, music lessons with no instruments and some extraordinarily talented inmates. Sara also chats about visiting the US and Norway, observing and forging relationships with prisons in both countries. They talk Arsenal football club, the importance of being able to laugh at yourself, finding common ground and how you turn the chaos of day 1 session 1 (think amps at the max, challenging keyboard effects and drums a-go-go) to a brilliant performance of the prisoners’ original songs on day 5. Seb and Verity try to get Sara to dish the dirt on mutual friend and colleague, trumpeter Rob Willson......listen to the end to hear what she says! 29 Mar 2021 | 46. David Taylor | 01:21:39
This week Seb and Verity get some much needed advice and inspiration from arts entrepreneur and marketing consultant, David Taylor. David’s work has seen him consulting many of the UK’s top orchestras and performers but never has he had such a difficult task as trying to sort out this pair..... David chats about setting up Yorkshire Young Sinfonia and leading it to huge success, reaching an audience of 7.5 million in just 4 years and featuring in the BBC documentary ‘Birth Of An Orchestra’. They discuss how orchestras have embraced the digital age and how they are finding ways to survive Covid. Seb and Verity try to get their heads around branding and optimal use of social media - mediums such as Clubhouse are thrown around...you know Clubhouse? Them neither. David talks about his early days as a cocktail waiter/bingo caller/cello teacher, working in Jerusalem, Philharmonia Gin (it’s a thing!) and being on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. 05 Apr 2021 | 47. Llinos Owen | 01:18:47
Remember when we told you we’d found the world’s most niche super hero - episode 27’s viola playing doctor Arun Menon? Well, we think we’ve matched him. This week’s guest is bassoonist and elite para-canoeist, Llinos Owen. Seb and Verity catch up with Llinos in-between training sessions for the international trials which she will be competing in this April. She chats to them about juggling her intensive sporting schedule with her sub principal/contra bassoon doubling job with Royal Ballet Sinfonia plus a busy freelance career and examining work for the ABRSM.......how on earth does she find time to breathe? Llinos talks about the horrendous car accident that resulted in a shattered pelvis, leaving her completely immobile for 10 weeks and consequently having to relearn how to walk. She discusses coming to terms with her injures, her determination to recover and how a desire to be active again led to a new found passion for kayaking. They discuss sickness and tears in training, reed making (or not), the joy of Prokofiev Ballet scores, examiner training and the ‘grade 1 of doom’! Seb relives his not-too-distant grade 6 piano exam experience and Verity owns up to some shameful outings as an accompanist, shudder. In this week’s episode, Seb and Verity are let loose in South London to meet Trumpeter, Composer and Arranger, Sam Ewens. Sam has recently released his album Stuck in The Overthink - under the name Night Auras - mixing an acoustic brass sound with electronica. This album is a reflection on the last year with tracks including ‘Digital Dystopia’, ‘Waves of Hyperbole’ and ‘Letting Go’ giving an indicator of the themes he covers. They chat about the making of this album, experimenting with looping and the fear of pressing wrong buttons. They discuss his online collaborations and his feelings about writing to tight deadlines for T.V. Sam also talks about a personal low point when purchasing a valve trombone during lockdown, french horn issues and how his 18 month old son’s bedroom doubles as his studio in the most ingenious of ways. Sam recollects a painful ‘Von Trapp’ moment at a wedding......a memory he’d buried for many years. They also discuss how it came to pass that he found himself rapping a takeaway menu with comedian Ross Noble in a tiny box room in his flat. Warning: The full extent of Seb’s Creme Egg addiction is publicly uncovered during the episode! 26 Apr 2021 | 49. Adrian McNally & Rachel Unthank (The Unthanks) | 01:23:11
This week’s guests are true folk royalty....It’s Rachel Unthank and Adrian McNally from The Unthanks. In their first attempt at a four way zoom conversation, Seb and Verity chat to Adrian and Rachel as - along with their band mates - they embark on writing and recording a new album and Adrian is starting to compose the score for the new series of Worzel Gummidge. They discuss working with BBC Concert Orchestra for the 2018 Folk Prom and The Brighouse and Rastrick band - Rachel was back on stage 4 weeks after giving birth......hardcore! Adrian talks about his palm-sweatingly stressful debut as the band’s pianist at a day’s notice supporting Ben Folds on his US tour. He also explains about the difficulties of juggling roles as performer, manager, composer and producer......a task that is made greater as the band are entirely self managed and keep everything in-house. Rachel and Adrian reminisce about learning their first album had been named Folk Album of the Year by Mojo in a car outside Co-op in Corbidge! They also cover clog dancing, deadlines, inspirations and their brilliant singing weekends - We totally want to go.....even just to sample Adrian’s acclaimed sprout pasta dish. It’s party time at TIAB as we reach our 50th episode! Who better to celebrate with than the Queen? ........ok, ok not Queen Elizabeth II but a darned good alternative; It’s star of Drag Race UK and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Vinegar Strokes. Vinegar describes herself as Tina Turner meets Lizzo meets Kat Slater - a winning combo I’m sure you’ll agree. She chats to Seb and Verity about her band - Vinegar Strokes and the Morning Afters and their debut gig at the Clapham Grand on 17 June (link below). They discuss inspirations, the birth of Vinegar (she’s a Halloween queen), audition anxiety, gigs in car parks, future operatic ventures, stand up and Shane Ritchie in drag. Vinegar tells Seb and Verity about who’s left her star struck (you might be surprised) and can you guess which of the above was a member of the Spice Girls Fan Club? (You won’t be surprised). This week’s episode comes to you from a sunny garden in East London and features Musical Director and all round top bloke, Huw Evans. Huw is currently Associate MD on hit West End Show Come From Away. He chats to Seb and Verity about this production’s beginnings in Dublin, his onstage interactions (accordion in hand) and why he thinks it’s been so popular with audiences in the UK, US and Canada. They discuss what the role of Associate MD entails and how he keeps cool and calm on first shows. Huw also chats about his time in Basel on the Lion King ‘Zebra Tour’, taking part in Crap Tap class at Mountview, working with male voice choirs and his mum’s appearance on Opportunity Knocks.....a wonderful 80’s throwback moment. Huw talks about recently completing a level 2 counselling course and they discuss mental health issues within the music industry - an area that would benefit from more widespread support and recognition. Towards the end of the podcast there is a brief moment of panic when there is concern Seb has ingested poppy seeds and might go into anaphylactic shock.....it all ends well and no epipen was required. This episode is fuelled by Leyton’s own Good Folk coffee (link below). Enjoy!

This week Seb and Verity are joined by vocal powerhouse, Bim. If you’ve listened to chart music over the last five years you will have undoubtably heard Bim’s voice - she’s sung backing vocals for artists including Jessie Ware, Dua Lipa, Mabel and Bastille - she’s featured vocalist on their track Joy - as well as being one of the vocalists for drum and bass act High Contrast. Bim chats about her journey into singing, musical influences, Glastonbury memories, vocal steaming and speed learning songs plus complex choreography......ooof! They discuss Bim’s royal connections - as co-coordinator of The Kingdom Choir for Harry and Meghan’s wedding and singing for musical royalty, Sir Elton of John on the new Lion King film soundtrack. 31 May 2021 | 54. Hannah Quinn & Oli Hayhurst | 01:22:39
Road Trip! For episode 54, Seb and Verity hit the road and head to Leighton Buzzard to chat to music power couple, Hannah Quinn and Oli Hayhurst. Hannah is a conductor, pianist, accompanist and répétiteur and Oli is a hugely in demand jazz bassist.....also dabbling in classical, commercial and world music. How do you manage to tangibly string together all the threads of Hannah and Oli’s exciting an eclectic careers you may ask? Well, judge for yourselves whether with the addition of some clunky segues we’ve achieved this! Conversation ranges from Hannah’s experiences of being head of music staff and assistant conductor at ETO, to Oli touring with Collabro and residencies at Ronnie Scott’s and Blue Note in Milan. Oli also chats about working with Julian Siegel, Pharoah Sanders and Ray Gelato. Plus supporting Bob Dylan, the different Jazz scenes in London and seeking authenticity in your work. Hannah talks about her mentors, some hardcore early conducting lessons, complicated translations and rehearsing orchestras in Chinese. She also chats about working with the dancers at the Royal Opera House and the complexities of playing for class. Inexplicably, topics also include Tiki Bars In Leighton Buzzard, Morris Dancing and performing dogs. Pretty much the kind of hard hitting journalism you’ve come to expect from a TIAB outing! 15 Jun 2021 | 56. Ben Marshall | 01:19:35
We join Seb and Verity in the Greenwich garden of this week’s guest - Oboist, Cor Anglais player and lockdown hero, Ben Marshall. Ben was the mastermind behind the Greenwich Park pop-up symphonies. He took the difficult decision not to monetise and commercialise these impromptu performances thus retaining their unexpected and magical feeling. Ben discusses an exciting film project he’s recently worked on whilst giving away as little as possible - he’d signed an NDA leading to many a cryptic answer! They talk about differing styles of oboe playing around Europe, music education, what the 21st century musician looks like and the unenviable task of sounding the ‘A’ pre gig. We also find out which famous wizard rocked up to the park pop-ups and what led to him getting a monkfish tattoo. You’ll be relieved to hear there is more vintage Neighbours chat - thanks Verity - and Ben explains why he’s convinced he started the pandemic.... That’s right pod fans! There’s more - Jon’s conversation was so stacked full of excellent anecdotes and fascinating insights that we couldn’t fit it all into one episode. So, in round two Seb and Verity chat to Jon about the unexpected way he came to join The War In Drugs, recording and performing with the band and winning a Grammy in 2018. Jon discusses his wild and joyous ska band era, growing up in the late 80s - the saxophone glory days - and jamming with John Zorn. He talks about the amazing experience of performing with Liza Minnelli - warning, this story features more traumatic accordion content! 13 Jul 2021 | 59. Aimée Madill | 01:18:37
Every now and then we like to throw in a curveball episode to mix things up, so this week we head to the brilliant Phlox Books In Leyton to chat to owner, Aimée Madill, about music and literature. What Aimée doesn’t know about books ain’t worth knowing! She studied at Trinity in Dublin and prior to opening Phlox, spent time working at the famous Shakespeare & Co in Paris. Her ability to speed read is mind blowing and Aimée exudes enthusiasm and passion for all kinds of literary genres. Seb and Verity chat to Aimée about the use of music and musicians in literature, both good and bad and where music and literature intersect. They also discuss musician’s autobiographies, great lyricists vs absurd lyrics, Aimée’s childhood music tastes and being harassed by cats in Cats. Aimée also chats about a brief dalliance with the tin whistle, hurling and the Harlem Renaissance. There are some great recommendations of books/genres to try for those short rehearsal breaks/people heading back into orchestra pits and also longer reads for anyone heading off on long journeys again.....what a wonderful thought! See below for an extensive reading list! This episode wonders off on many tangents and Seb and Verity display their somewhat embarrassing grasp on French history but it’s packed with interesting info and books to suit every taste! 10 Oct 2021 | 65. J. Willgoose, Esq. | 00:58:56
This week’s episode features Public Service Broadcasting’s mastermind, J.Willgoose, Esq. Their latest album Bright magic entered the UK charts at no. 2 in October 2021 - a fantastic achievement for an album that is far from mainstream pop. Seb and Verity chat to Willgoose about his inspiration for the album, moving to Berlin and going back to record there in the world famous Hansa Tonstudio, where iconic records such as Achtung Baby and Bowie’s Low and Heroes were recorded. They discuss early musical experiences - descant recorder features heavily, buying new toys, side projects and J.Willgoose’s feelings on recording with Seb.... Please note this conversation was recorded in Willgoose’s South London studio, packed with a myriad of keyboards, synths, computers, guitars etc so if you detect a nervous tension you’d be right - Seb and Verity plus hot drinks and expensive equipment equals potential carnage. This week’s episode features tour manager, sound engineer and baking supremo, Alicia Blake. Seb and Verity were lucky enough to catch Alicia at her home in Seattle - sadly for them, only via zoom - whilst on a short break from Sylvan Esso’s U.S tour. Alicia chats about hitting the road again and how the band and crew have been spending their downtime - think tie dying T-shirts in a tent in the middle of nowhere..... She talks about learning to sound engineer on her first job in a club in Seattle and how she made the move into touring. She tells a great story about the first band she toured with and the grizzly details of what they were up to! Mercifully these days Alicia’s bands are much easier to work with - and the budgets a little higher - none the less, Seb and Verity spring some nightmare tour scenarios on her and see how she’d handle them. Another excellent Alicia fact is that she recently went back into education to train as a pastry chef. She discusses what led her to this, the reality of working as a baker and shipping baked goods to friends during lockdown. Ska comes in for another pasting, along with late 90s fashion and, as ever, there are multiple digressions including a brief US Office vs UK Office debate, a trumpet interlude from Verity’s 9 year old son and some minor internet issues. 08 Nov 2021 | 67. Samara Ginsberg | 01:18:33
For episode 67, Seb and Verity are joined by cellist and internet sensation, Samara Ginsberg. Samara’s multi-tracked cello videos of retro tv and film themes have been garnering huge international audiences online - her Star Wars vid having 3.5 million views on Twitter and growing! If you haven’t seen any so far, 1. where have you been and 2. Head to her YouTube channel NOW! (Link below) The central theme of this episode is how Samara has navigated living with ADHD and successfully carved out a career as a freelance cellist. She only had a diagnosis in her thirties so discusses the impact ADHD had on her life and music college education. Samara is both candid and fascinating, talking about something that is rarely discussed in the music profession. Despite not wanting to be held up as a spokesperson on ADHD, she has excellent advice and insight into negotiating life with this diagnosis. It wouldn’t be a regular Three In a Bar episode without some major deviations which this week include Verity’s pretentious dissertation, learning Kylie hits on the recorder and some big love for smart phones…. 24 Nov 2021 | 68. Robert Simmons | 01:14:59
This week’s episode features Violinist, journalist, founder of the Estilo String Quartet, former Über delivery driver......and Verity’s husband, Robert Simmons. Against all the odds this episode doesn’t descend into chaos or indeed a domestic, however the subjects covered don’t necessarily match what Rob had in mind. They chat about his stint as an Über delivery cyclist and the chain of events that led to making a potential loss. Rob also talks about the new branch of his career working as sub editor for ESTA (European String Teachers Association) and the fascinating and challenging new skills he has developed by diversifying in this way. Rob discusses going back to Royal Ballet Sinfonia post pandemic and the company’s impressive online presence over the last eighteenths months. Verity questions (interrogates) him about what he does in his free time on tour. They delve into Rob’s musical background - Verity revels in the cringeworthy tales of his Barbershop quartet performances. Seb ups the awkward stakes by questioning Rob on how he and Verity first met and they reminisce about the good old SouthBank Sinfonia days. Heartwarming or excruciating....you decide! 10 Dec 2021 | 69. Natalie Holt | 01:15:39
This week Seb and Verity are joined by Emmy Nominated, critically acclaimed film composer, Natalie Holt. Natalie’s work includes the score for the recent Marvel series Loki, as well as work on rims including Paddington and Journey’s End. Having come perilously close to complete technical failure in the past, in their first meeting with Natalie the recording spectacularly malfunctioned. Incredibly, having already found an hour in her busy schedule, Natalie came back for round two which is what you hear in this podcast. Seb and Verity attempt to reword various lines of questioning as well as being more factually accurate than first time around. Conversation includes how Natalie pitched for Loki, composing suites for films, musical pass the parcel and making the theramin great again! Natalie also discusses some of the exciting new projects she’s working on, including BatGirl and the fascinating sounding Cocaine Bear. Natalie talks about some of her exciting exploits as a violinist, including playing at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and in the sea in Sardinia with Craig David..... They also chat weird gig experiences, film school, influential mentors and chasing Alan Silvestri through the streets of London....definitely worth a listen! In the second of two New Year's catch ups, Seb and Verity check in with former guests; Luisa Lale, Charlotte Harding and Jon Natchez. All three have exciting things a foot in 2022 and their enthusiasm and optimism is a perfect antidote to the winter blues. After a few false starts - the latest challenges brought to you by Zencastr - Lu chats about new tracks, some exciting TV show placements and mystical briefs.....yep, you read that correctly - the mind boggles! Charlotte phones in from a remote Scottish Island where she is currently writing music for her new EP. She discusses signing with FaberAlt, creating a new style of notation and preparing to launch it, plus tea making etiquette in the studio. It's a serious business. Seb and Verity catch Jon as he is about to embark on a world tour with his band The War On Drugs. He talks about their new album, the perils of touring in the current Covid climate and making it onto Barack Obama's 2021 playlist - mind-blowingly cool! 07 Feb 2022 | 72. Dan Watts | 01:08:58
In this week's episode Seb and Verity take a trip to South London for a chat with flautist, composer, arranger, stealth violinist/viola player and fountain of excellent tales, Dan Watts. Dan is a founder member and trustee of the Northern Lights Symphony Orchestra. He discusses the precarious nature of planning and booking concerts, discovering lesser known Scandinavian composers and the unmitigated joys of funding applications! Dan and Verity reminisce about their busking days - including a police incident, stink bombs and an ill advised residency at Oceana night club. He also talks about an unexpected appearance on a first class reality TV show.... Dan recounts an excruciating composition experience, his passion for chamber music and his plans to set up a Baroque group. They end with some tape and cd nostalgia. It's well worth listening to the very end to hear Seb's first musical purchase - an inspired choice! This episode is fuelled by Chimney Fire Coffee who have sponsored this podcast. 21 Feb 2022 | 73. Giacomo Smith | 01:28:18
Cai, you should definitely listen to this one! (As should everyone else) as this week’s episode features jazz clarinetist, saxophonist and co founder of Kansas Smitty’s, Giacomo Smith. Seb and Verity catch Giacomo pre show in the Worthing Assembly Halls where he and Seb are performing with Rob Brydon for his A Night of Songs and Laughter tour. There is an added sense of jeopardy in this episode as it is recorded in Rob’s dressing room with the fear he may arrive at any second….. Giacomo talks about Plunderphonia - the new album from Kansas Smitty’s - it’s influences and the prospect of performing it live in the coming months. He discusses setting up and running a venue - the julep specialism era and appealing to Easy Jet customers both feature! They chat about Paris, podcasting and the man with the best internet in East London - that’s one heck of a claim. Giacomo also talks getting festive in early summer for a collaboration with Jamie Cullum….just beating the supermarkets to it. 08 Mar 2022 | 74. Letty Stott & Beth Higham-Edwards | 01:40:22
This week to celebrate International Women's Day, Seb and Verity chat to two great ambassadors for gender equality in the music industry, Letty Stott and Beth Higham Edwards. Letty and Beth have recently launched their new company Gender and the Large and Shiny Instruments, with the aim of starting open conversations about gender in the workplace. Letty is a French Horn player and Beth a percussionist, both of which are instruments that have not been historically viewed as 'feminine' choices. They discuss their hugely successful launch and how the company is developing and moving forward. They also share their own personal experiences through educational and professional lives as talk about what can be done to start redressing the balance - in a nutshell, we need to be prepared for some eggy moments! Inevitably, there are some deviations, including an in-depth critique of hot cross buns from specialist Beth and some plumbing chat with Letty... Beth and Letty are fascinating, eloquent and positive about the future of the music industry. This conversations leaves lots of food for thought. You can find out more about Gender and the Large and Shiny Instruments on their website; https://www.largeandshiny.com/ Follow them on social media, @LargeAndShiny on Instagram and @galsimusic on Twitter Watch Letty's interview (and demonstration of some amazing historical instruments) at the Festival of New here: https://youtu.be/CMzWTqPJ-ml Hosted on Acast. 31 Mar 2022 | 75. Jules Buckley | 01:12:44
This week's guest is Grammy award winning conductor, arranger, curator and composer, Jules Buckley.....and boy, are we glad this episode has made it into yer ears after some palm sweatingly stressful uploading issues! It's been a rollercoaster pod friends.... Seb and Verity catch up with Jules at his studio in Berlin to chat about his eclectic and multi faceted career. They discuss his early days as a trumpeter, the inception of Heritage Orchestra during his studies at GSMD - an era when most players didn't have mobile phones and those who did hadn't topped up their credit for a term. Jules talks about their first gig, taking a leap of faith committing his time and energies to the orchestra and a memorable early touring experience to Montreaux with a bus load of overexcited students. Jules also chats about the joy of working with BBCSO where he is Creative Artist in Association and what this role entails. He and Verity share a brief reminiscence of their time at GSMD, along with some of the interesting characters encountered there. He tells them about a cringeworthy exchange with Razorlight's Johnny Borrell and some chance encounters that led to great things. Seb and Verity ask Jules about his upcoming gig at the Barbican with Father John Misty and the Britten Sinfonia, and there is an awkward moment where it appears that `Jules has terminated the call after Seb angles for tickets.....listen until the end to see how that plays out! 14 Apr 2022 | 76. Sam Okell | 01:12:53
Round of applause please......this week's episode was recorded over the internet and there were no, I repeat no, technical hitches! And good job too as Seb and Verity have Senior Engineer at Abbey Road, multiple Grammy and Emmy winner and all round top bloke Sam Okell on for a chat. What Sam doesn't know about the Beatles ain't worth knowing, having for many years been heavily involved in remastering their complete back catalogue. He recently worked with Giles Martin alongside Peter Jackson on the hugely successful documentary series Get Back. Sam also works extensively on film sessions as a recording engineer and mixer including The Hobbit, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Seb and Verity catch up with Sam in his home in Cornwall, where he is currently in the process of converting a Methodist Chapel into a recording studio... sounds pretty idyllic. They chat extensively about his work on the Beatles' albums, watching endless hours of their old rehearsal footage, the reception from diehard Beatles fans to the remastered albums and whether he can still listen to their music after all theses years immersed in it! Sam talks about how he started out - in part with a DIY set up in a woodshed - how he worked his way up the ranks at Abbey Road and how he negotiates his way through tricky film sessions where it's a hotbed of conflicting opinions. In a perhaps ill advised move, Verity and Seb invited listeners to submit questions for Sam, with varying quality in the responses! Sam's answers involve some mortifying incidents picked up on mics, hidden Beatles 'artifacts' at Abbey Road and an artfully sidestepped answer to what Verity was like at school.... 04 May 2022 | 77. Nicole Wilson | 01:15:40
In Episode 77, Seb and Verity are joined by violinist supremo and newly appointed Artistic Director of NSSO, Nicole Wilson. Nicole has held positions with the LSO and ENO and works extensively as a freelancer, appearing as guest leader, in various west end shows and in major film sessions. She has also turned her hand to orchestral session fixing - her credits including the sixth Harry Potter movie. She co-produced a highly successful album for children - FunKey Rhymes - which has made her a huge star in the Philpott household. Nicole is the founder and managing director of Musical Orbit, a council member for ESTA and now bringing her boundless energy to NSSO. Exhausted? We don't know how she does it either! We were hugely grateful to Nicole for sparing time on Good Friday to jump on a zoom call for a chat before she hit Mercedes Benz world....It's a jam packed conversation covering everything from the terrifying yet thrilling experience of recording Star Wars scores with the legend John Williams, to recording Old Macdonald via 'Is it Cake?' Nicole discusses managing and overcoming performance anxiety and how Musical Orbit has helped match students with teachers from as far apart as Australia and Somerset. She also tells Seb and Verity what happened when her husband mysteriously vanished the day after her first child was born.....don't worry, there is a happy end to this (basically!) 25 May 2022 | 78. Grahame King | 01:17:57
This week Three In a Bar becomes Three on a Boat as Seb and Verity hit the marina to meet timpanist supremo, Grahame King. Grahame has been principal timpanist with Royal Ballet Sinfonia since 1998 and guests with many other major orchestras in the UK. He teaches timpani at both RCM and Birmingham Conservatoire. Seb and Verity enjoyed a wonderful early summer evening on Grahame's boat - so much so, this episode is edited down from a 3hr conversation, gulp! He chats about his early days with the Sinfonia, touring tales and the birth of the RBS football team - major orchestral rivalries and covert matches against the dancers both feature! They discuss the pitfalls and problems of appearing as a guest principal timpanist, different timp arrangements and a trip to Sunderland in a clapped out van. Grahame talks about his musical roots and a dalliance with jazz vibes...who the devil is Ron Bevington? You'll find out... BUY TICKETS TO SEE OUR LIVE SHOW ON 12TH JUNE 2022! 17 Jun 2022 | 79.Johannes Moser | 01:13:12
How on earth do we follow an all singing, all dancing live show? We'll tell you how - with a chat to a true great of the classical music world, German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser. Johannes' groundbreaking new album Alone Together is released on 17 June 2022 and this episode is released in conjunction with this. Seb and Verity meet Johannes at Platoon's state of the art studios in North London where most of his new album was recorded. They were treated to a sneak preview of some of the tracks played through Dolby Atmos which was a truly mind blowing experience! Johannes chats in depth about the pioneering way in which this album was recorded and the painstakingly detailed multi-tracking work required - thankfully with a calm and level headed producer on hand! He talks about his music choices for the album and working with the six young American composers he commissioned. They discuss how teaching has informed his performance and try to decide which is the greater challenge - performing one of the major concertos with the world's leading orchestras or making sure the tech works in his post concert foyer shows on the electric cell. 07 Jul 2022 | 80. George White | 01:18:00
We're back and this week we've got a belter for you! Its none other than viola player and new member of Estilo String Quartet George White. This conversation was recorded in early may on a sunny day in East London and is joyful meander through George's life and career so far. Seb and Verity chat to him about his extended season with South Bank Sinfonia, a baptism of fire in West End depping and the accuracy of stereotyping the characteristics of different sections of the orchestra - we'd love to hear your thoughts on this! TRIGGER WARNING - George talks openly and frankly about his personal struggles with mental health - specifically depression. He discusses how it profoundly affected him and led him to putting his career on hold. He also talks about how he has found ways to cope with his depression including counselling, retreats and mindfulness. If you are affected by any of the issues George raises please see links below to some brilliant mental health charities - some of which are specifically aimed at musicians. George is an incredibly positive person and we were hugely grateful to him for being so open with us....and also for answering some extremely naff questions Verity had found on the internet that he'd previously responded to, to see if his answers tallied up. Cutting edge journalism as ever. If you are affected by any of the mental health issues George raised these charities are all fantastic and offer a range of services, including free counselling and advice: https://www.musicmindsmatter.org.uk This episode is fuelled by Chimney Fire Coffee who have sponsored this podcast. 19 Jul 2022 | 81. Katya Apekisheva | 01:13:32
What's this? Another episode out so soon? That's right folks, we've got a fabulous guest for you this week - Internationally renowned concert pianist and co founder of the London piano festival Katya Apekisheva. Seb and Verity chat to Katya via zoom on a sweaty mid-July afternoon and for nostalgia's sake enjoy some zoom related hitches (haven't you missed them?!). They discuss Katya's upcoming solo recital at the Wigmore Hall on 21 July which features amongst other things an exciting new composition, Figaro's Dances by her long time friend and collaborator Elena Langer. The concert is based around mazurkas and fantasies so she patiently explains what a mazurka is to two musicians who clearly need to revisit Grade 5 theory... Katya talks about selecting concert repertoire, overcommitting and some nerve jangling experiences when stepping in for last minute performances. She shares her concert preparation techniques, including performing to her friends - no walk in the park when your friends include some of the finest pianists in the world. Seb and Verity ask Katya about how she set up the London Piano Festival and what to expect in this year's event. Katya touches upon how it feels for her as a Russian in these torrid times and the difficulty of having parents still living and working in Russia. She also talks about her time studying in Jerusalem and the new freedom and opportunities this allowed her. If you would like to get ticket's for Katya's Wigmore Hall concert click here; https://wigmore-hall.org.uk/whats-on/katya-apekisheva-202207211930 £5 tickets are available for under 35s. 12 Aug 2022 | A tour around Chichester with Barney Philpott | 00:44:55
Your hosts, Verity and Seb find themselves in Chichester and in the glorious presence of Barney Philpott. It's a mid-August scorcher of a day, with a very low-tech set up, but buckets of atmosphere... you'll really believe that you, too, are walking down a British high street. Barney, the tour guide, shows us around, sharing some genuine local tips, and excellent pastry deals. Just like a mini sausage roll before lunch, hopefully this will tide you over until next week, where we'll be speaking to Broadway and Hollywood orchestrator, Doug Besterman. 17 Aug 2022 | 82. Doug Besterman | 01:28:47
After an unintentionally extended break (sorry) we are back....and back with a belter. Episode 82 features true Broadway royalty. None other than orchestrator, arranger and producer Doug Besterman. Doug is a multiple Tony and Drama Desk award winner. His list of theatre and film credits is vast, including The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Aladdin, Fosse, Mary Poppins, Captain America, Chicago and co-orchestrations for a little known song named Let It Go... Seb and Verity chatted with Doug on a sunny August day during his time at the Chichester Festival Theatre, where he had been co orchestrating the new 30th anniversary production of Crazy For You with Mark Cumberland. He talks about his process of re orchestrating and down sizing Bill Brohn's original work and dividing up the workload with Mark. It's a whirlwind process and competitive spreadsheeting helped keep up the note rate! Doug talks about his early days in the industry including a dubious stint as a pianist in a Korean Theme park and a nerve jangling project for Alan Menken, with whom he has gone on to work with extensively. He also chats about working with legends such as Mel Brookes and Barbara Streisand. As a fellow WSET certified wine buff (bore), Verity couldn't let this interview pass without quizzing Doug on his wine choices! 31 Aug 2022 | 83. Kuljit Bhamra | 01:21:12
In Episode 83 Seb and Verity head down the Elizabeth line to Southall for a chat with tabla player, producer, composer and one of the best people you could hope to meet, Kuljit Bhamra MBE. Kuljit was one of the pioneers of British Bhangra and has produced, recorded and performed on copious amounts of records for British and Indian artists. He works extensively as a session musician as well as collaborating with artists across a multitude of genres - jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard is a long time collaborator as well as artists including the Orlando consort, BBC Concert Orchestra, Ringo Starr and Andrew Lloyd Webber on Bombay Dreams. Kuljit previously performed and had a brief chat at the TIAB live show (see link below) so Seb and Verity were delighted he agreed to come back for round 2. Conversation includes demystifying tabla playing and debunking some of the myths surrounding Eastern music, bringing together performers from all genres and some weird and wonderful requests he’s received. They also chat about a chance meeting in Pizza Express (not Prince Andrew but music theatre royalty was involved) and making his West End debut. Kuljit discusses his plans for potential world domination (our words not his) with his new invention - the electric tabla. Watch this space! Take a look at Kuljit performing at Three In a Bar live here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJwilFeLOBE He features at around 53 minutes in! To learn more about Kuljit’s work visit https://kedarecords.com/artist/kuljit-bhamra/ Kuljit has composed the music for the new theatre production of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which will be in the West End and then on a UK tour 2022-2023. 14 Sep 2022 | 84. Joby Burgess | 01:36:27
This week Seb and Verity venture into the Bedfordshire countryside to meet virtuoso percussionist Joby Burgess. Joby is embarking on a UK tour at the end of September performing his new album A Percussionist’s Songbook - a collection of specially commissioned songs by eight composers, including Graham Fitkin, Dobrinka Tabakova, Gabriel Prokofiev and Joby himself! The conversation takes place in Joby’s home studio which in a former life was both a coach house and a hairdresser - conversation ranges from where they are going on holiday this year to whether it’ll be a full head of highlights or a half…only kidding! Joby discusses how the balance of his career has shifted over the last few years with a much greater emphasis on recording. With this in mind, he chats about the prospect of returning to live performances with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. They discuss Joby’s weird, wonderful and extensive collection of percussion instruments, Tom Cruise’s penchant for bongos, workshopping and recording Little Simz’s epic album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert and the pitfalls of performing using a full Fanta bottle and electronics with reference to a specific incident in Cambridge… To book tickets for Joby’s tour click here: https://www.jobyburgess.com/live And to find out more about upcoming performances/recordings/education projects visit his website: https://www.jobyburgess.com/ This episode is fuelled by Chimney Fire Coffee who have sponsored this podcast. 13 Oct 2022 | 86. Rob Simmons (Again!) | 01:20:18
Look who’s back……it’s friend (and In Verity’s case, husband) of the podcast Robert Simmons. It was brought to our attention that last time we had Rob on the pod he maybe didn’t get the opportunity to chat about the things he wanted to discuss. With this in mind we’ve had him back on….and done exactly the same thing again! This conversation covers his job with Royal Ballet Sinfonia, fitness regimes, the Royal Family, feeling your age (or not), side by side schemes, what you find when you google Robert Simmons and much more - occasionally music related. If you like a good old waffly chat tune in, sit back and enjoy! 05 Nov 2022 | 87. Millie Ashton | 01:32:47
This week Seb and Verity chat to violinist supremo Millie Ashton. This is actually Millie's third appearance on the pod having popped up briefly in Cat Parker's episode and featured as part of the Ashton/Melhuish dynasty back in 2020.....a lot has changed for her since then, including graduating from GSMD after (gulp) 16 years! Millie chats about her days living a double life as a student by day, busy freelancer by evening and hard partying fresher by night! They also discuss taking the next step away from music college, guest leading the 2nd violins at the Philharmonia and how she approaches this role. Millie talks about her time at Prussia Cove on the highly prestigious chamber music course as well as her new found love of all things outdoors, wild swimming and finding time for other things away from music. She suffered with some horrific health issues right at the crux point in her studies and tells Seb and Verity all about that awful time and how she managed to get through it. It's fairly graphic and pretty shocking.....but lets just say, be thankful you can't see the photos! Millie is a truly incredible person who has achieved so much already at just 24 years old - and through some seriously challenging circumstances. This episode would make a very interesting and insightful listen for anyone studying or just finishing their studies at music college....as well as anyone else who likes a darned good catch with an old pal!
