23 Jun 2024Tackling Mother Nature's Obstacles on the Golf Course00:44:53

Join us this week as we explore the myriad challenges and adaptations golfers face on the course. We kick things off with a round at Iroquois Park, where the sandy greens on the back nine threw a curveball into our game. This leads to a broader discussion on the importance of adaptability in golf, whether it's managing downhill lies or adjusting to top-dressed greens. We also touch on the common expectation among golfers for discounts during course maintenance and how this contrasts with the general acceptance of other course imperfections caused by natural factors. Understanding and embracing these variables can significantly enhance the golfing experience.

Listen in as we discuss mastering golf in windy conditions and the mental toughness required to play through them. Much like the unpredictable weather in Scotland or Ireland, these challenges can make for memorable stories and skill improvements. Drawing from a recent scoring school, we share insights on adapting to a two-club headwind, hitting the ball more solidly, and maintaining control and scoring despite adverse conditions. This chapter underscores the importance of mindset and technique in turning challenging weather into opportunities for growth and enjoyment.

Finally, we tackle the unique obstacles presented by extreme weather, from playing in heavy rain to enduring 82 mile-per-hour winds during a charity scramble near Valhalla Golf Club. We recount humorous and thrilling moments, such as dodging flying trash cans and hitting long shots in hurricane-like conditions. This conversation emphasizes the need to be prepared for any weather, the value of appropriate gear, and the camaraderie that often emerges in such situations. Whether you're a casual golfer or a serious player, embracing these extreme conditions can lead to unforgettable experiences and stories.

12 Jan 2025Embrace Aging and Elevate Your Golf Game: Techniques and Strategies for Senior Golfers00:44:53

(00:01) Aging Golfers and Hybrids

This chapter explores the unique challenges and adjustments that come with playing golf as we age. We highlight the irony that as we have more time to enjoy golf, our physical capabilities often diminish, leading to the need for different strategies and equipment choices. The discussion includes adapting to the realities of aging, such as reduced clubhead speed and the benefits of incorporating more hybrids into our golf bags. We also share anecdotes and insights on how many golfers overestimate their current abilities based on past performances, which can lead to on-course frustration. The goal is to embrace these changes and continue to enjoy the game, potentially even striving to shoot our age in the future.

(12:28) Techniques for Penetrating Bunker Shots

This chapter explores the transformative journey of four elderly women learning to play golf more effectively. Initially, they struggled with common techniques that weren't suitable for their physical abilities, resulting in a lack of control and unsuccessful shots. We discuss how adjusting their grip and stance, specifically by hinging their wrists and standing the club vertically, helped them gain better control and achieve greater clubhead speed. By positioning the ball at the bottom of their divot and making a regular swing, they could easily navigate the sand and clear obstacles, ultimately improving their game. This approach underscores the importance of adapting techniques to individual needs, especially when physical strength is a limiting factor.

(21:17) Improving Golf Swing for Seniors

This chapter explores the nuances of grip pressure and balance in golf, especially for older players seeking to maintain or increase their swing speed. We discuss the common misconception that slowing down can lead to better control, emphasizing instead the importance of maintaining balance and grip control to generate more efficient power. Highlighting the challenges of translating force into relatable terms, we examine how changes in stance, grip, and posture can aid in achieving a faster and more balanced swing. The focus is on finding the right grip pressure that allows for control without sacrificing mobility, enabling seniors to optimize their swing for better distance and ball speed.

(34:20) Improving Golf Swing Without Tech

This chapter explores adjustments to make in your golf game as you age, focusing primarily on increasing swing speed without relying on high-tech equipment. We discuss using an alignment stick to identify the loudest point in your swing, indicating where the club is moving fastest, and how shifting that point can lead to speed gains. Techniques like turning your chest toward the target and enhancing wrist action are highlighted. While we recognize the value of launch monitors, we also acknowledge that not all instructors use them due to their cost. We suggest a simple, cost-effective training tool involving a rope and a Nerf ball to help improve swing speed, emphasizing that these low-tech solutions can be surprisingly effective in enhancing your game.

(44:04) Golf Course Length Strategy for Seniors

This chapter explores how to determine the appropriate course length by multiplying the distance you hit with a five iron by 36, offering a practical approach to tailor your game. We also share our excitement for the upcoming 52 weeks of shows, encouraging listeners to tune in regularly or catch up on past episodes at thoseweekendgolfguys.com. Reflecting on our journey over the past 11 years, we express gratitude for the audience's support and provide a reminder to follow Jeff's advice for improving your golf experience, particularly as you age.

14 May 2023Golf Course Grasses and How To Play Them00:47:54

The type of grass used on golf courses plays a significant role in determining the overall playing conditions and aesthetics of the course. Golf course grasses are carefully selected based on their ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, adapt to various climates, provide consistent ball roll, and maintain a visually appealing appearance. There are primarily two types of grass used on golf courses: warm-season grasses and cool-season grasses, each with distinct characteristics and advantages. This week Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine’s Top100 Teachers, and co-host John Ashton explain the differences and how to approach playing on each type. Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, and seashore paspalum, thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They are known for their excellent tolerance to heat, drought, and wear. Warm-season grasses have a dense growth pattern, allowing golf balls to sit on top of the grass, resulting in better ball control. These grasses exhibit excellent recovery after damage and provide a consistent playing surface throughout the year. However, they tend to go dormant and turn brown during winter months in cooler regions. Cool-season grasses, including Bentgrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Ryegrass, are predominantly used in temperate regions. They flourish in cooler temperatures and are resilient against low temperatures, making them ideal for regions with cold winters. Cool-season grasses provide a lush, green appearance and exceptional ball roll, contributing to a smoother and faster putting surface. However, they may struggle in hot, humid climates and require more water and maintenance compared to warm-season grasses. The choice of grass type also depends on the specific areas of the golf course. Fairways, tees, and roughs often feature different grass types to cater to their distinct needs. For example, Bentgrass is commonly used on putting greens due to its fine texture and ability to be closely mowed for faster green speeds. Bermuda grass is often found on fairways due to its durability and ability to recover from divots and traffic. In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards using a blend of grasses on golf courses. This approach combines the strengths of different grass species, such as the durability of warm-season grasses with the smoothness of cool-season grasses, to achieve optimal playing conditions throughout the year. Ultimately, the choice of grass on a golf course depends on factors such as climate, maintenance resources, and golfer preferences. By carefully selecting and maintaining the appropriate grass types, golf course superintendents aim to provide players with a visually appealing and enjoyable playing experience, while also ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the course.

09 Apr 2023Play Within Yourself00:44:51

This week Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher and co-host of Those Weekend Golf Guys show offers some invaluable advice: Play Within Yourself. In short, don’t do more than your abilities, your body, and your equipment can do. For instance, if you are taking your second shot into a par 4 hole with something higher than a 7,8,9, or wedge, you need to move up a tee or two. Don’t let your ego ruin the fun of golf by frustrating you because you are doing stuff you are not capable of doing. Don’t try to be a superhero, the cape often times gets tangled around the shaft of the club.

09 Mar 2025Golf Season Kickoff Essentials for Success00:44:53

(00:01) Golf Season Kickoff and Equipment Upgrades

This chapter captures a lively conversation between John Ashton and Jeff Smith as they discuss the start of the new golf season. With temperatures rising, John is excited to hit the golf course for the first time this year, despite not having touched his clubs since November. Jeff humorously suggests replacing all golf gear as a fresh start and warns about the unpredictability of the first round back after a layoff. We explore how the lack of expectations can lead to surprisingly good performances and the common cycle of initial success followed by disappointment. Emphasis is placed on setting realistic expectations and committing to practice, especially in areas like putting and chipping, which many golfers overlook. The discussion highlights the balance between enjoyment and the pursuit of improvement, while also sharing anecdotes about golf course experiences and the quirks that come with them.

(13:45) Preseason Golf Preparation and Rules

This chapter offers practical advice for preparing for the golf season after a winter hiatus. We explore the importance of arriving early for a thorough warm-up session, which includes stretching and practicing swings to prevent injuries. Emphasis is placed on the maintenance of golf equipment, such as cleaning club grips to avoid slippage. The chapter also highlights the significance of being prepared for unpredictable spring weather, suggesting items like hand warmers and stocking caps to keep warm. We touch on the idea of using hand warmers to keep golf balls warm in cold weather, while humorously sharing personal anecdotes about golfing in chilly conditions and the physical impact of mis-hits on cold days.

(24:35) Early Season Golf Club Selection Strategy

This chapter focuses on strategic golfing tips for early season rounds, emphasizing the importance of over-clubbing due to lack of practice and soft ground conditions. We explore why golfers often aren't in mid-season form at the start of the season and how taking extra club can compensate for slower swings and softer ground that absorbs energy, reducing shot distance. The discussion highlights a case study of a young golfer who learns the value of using a stock swing with a higher club for consistency and reliability, rather than relying on a hard swing with a lower club, which often results in greater shot variability and missed opportunities for pars and birdies. The advice centers on choosing the right club for a smoother, more controlled swing, thus maintaining or improving one's handicap by ensuring shots land closer to the target with less spray and variability.

(32:47) Golf Posture

This chapter explores the common golfing advice of "staying down on it" and questions its validity. We discuss the misconception that golfers must keep their posture and head low throughout their swing, which can lead to back issues and restrict movement. Highlighting examples like Dustin Johnson, we contrast this approach with golfers who allow for upward extension during their swings, such as Lexi Thompson and Justin Thomas, to achieve a wider arc and faster club speed. We emphasize the importance of extending arms for power and maintaining consistency in hitting the ball's sweet spot, ultimately challenging the traditional "stay down" advice in favor of more effective and health-conscious techniques.

(42:40) Improving Golf Swing Extension and Impact

This chapter focuses on the dynamics of a golf swing, challenging the notion that golfers should keep their heads completely still. We explore the importance of maintaining a consistent chest height throughout the swing, while acknowledging the necessity of using vertical force to optimize power. Emphasizing the role of arm extension, we discuss how successful golfers excel at striking the ground precisely, ensuring effective ball contact. By examining videos of proficient ball strikers, we highlight the significance of hitting the ground accurately to achieve a great shot. We encourage golfers to apply these insights to improve their game, no matter their experience level.

22 Sep 2024Improve Your Short Game and Putting with Expert Tips00:44:53

(00:00) Improving Golf Scoring Techniques

This chapter is all about improving your golf scoring by mastering the ups and downs of the short game. Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher, explains the importance of having two key shots: the firm-handed scrape (or bump and run) and understanding how to position yourself on different slopes. We explore how to maintain a stable base on various terrains, focusing on the importance of aligning your shoulders with the slope and adjusting your posture before determining the length of the club. Jeff emphasizes the significance of balance and stability, especially when dealing with upslopes around the greens, to ensure precise and predictable shots.

(13:39) Effective Short Game Techniques

This chapter delves into the nuances of controlling hand and wrist movements in various activities, such as tossing a tennis or golf ball, throwing a dart, or shaking hands. We explore the concept of maintaining a balance between being too loose and too stiff, emphasizing the importance of the "Goldilocks zone"—a middle ground where movements are neither too rigid nor too floppy. By examining how this principle applies to golf, particularly in shots like the "firm-handed scrape" or "bump and run," we discuss how to achieve a stable and balanced setup. This approach helps to avoid common pitfalls like thin and fat shots, resulting in more consistent, crisp contact. The importance of prioritizing balance, club length, and ball position is also highlighted as key factors for successful execution.

(23:57) Mastering Golf Short Game Techniques

This chapter focuses on the techniques required to execute precise short game shots around the greens, especially from challenging lies like bunkers or slopes. We explore the critical concepts of establishing a stable base by planting the downhill leg firmly and matching the shoulder line to the slope. Two primary shot techniques are discussed: the firm-handed scrape and the hinge and thump. The hinge and thump shot involves hinging the wrists to get the club vertical on the takeaway and then unhinging to thump the ground at the lowest point of the swing, typically near the front hip joint. This technique allows the ball to pop up softly, making it ideal for high, soft shots like lobs or flops. We emphasize the importance of ensuring the club gets below the ball, whether in grass or sand, to achieve the desired shot outcome.

(34:12) Enhancing Putting Skills for Lower Scores

This chapter is all about improving your golf score by focusing on two lifesaver shots—the firm-wristed scrape shot and the hinge and thump shot—and honing your putting skills beyond just stroke technique. We emphasize the importance of speed control, advocating for putts that stop just past the hole to avoid negative feedback from missed putts. By practicing putting to the fringe, golfers can develop better distance control without the discouragement of missed holes. We also explore the importance of aiming and consistent putting mechanics, suggesting drills like hitting the flagstick from two feet away to ensure straight putts. Finally, we discuss effective green reading techniques, highlighting the importance of keeping your eyes level to accurately assess the tilt of the green.

(42:55) Improving Green Reading Techniques

This chapter emphasizes the importance of holistic green reading in golf, particularly using the Aimpoint method. We explore the necessity of assessing the entire terrain between the ball and the hole, not just the immediate ground. By reading with your feet and feeling the slope through various parts of your body—legs, hips, torso, and overall body lean—you can gain a better understanding of the green. We address common resistance to this method and explain how defending ineffective green-reading techniques can hinder improvement. For those seeking to lower their golf scores, adopting this approach is crucial. A reference to a previous detailed episode on this topic is also mentioned for further learning.

This chapter takes us on a journey from the sunny skies of Southern California to the thrilling world of sports betting and collegiate athletics. I chat with Jeff Smith about the unrelenting sunshine in SoCal and the recent Battle for Atlantis basketball tournament, where the unranked University of Louisville Cardinals made waves by defeating the Indiana Hoosiers. We also touch on the intense Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry, celebrating Indiana University's triumph over Purdue in football. As football season winds down, the focus shifts to the Hero World Challenge golf tournament in the Bahamas, where a friend is poised to defend his pro-am title. We round out the conversation with some sports trivia, highlighting the impressive careers of two-sport athletes like Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, and the often-overlooked Brian Jordan.

(12:14) Improving Swing Angles for Better Control

This chapter brings to light our surprise at being ranked 49th in the top 100 golf podcasts in the United States, humorously suggesting a mix-up while also acknowledging the need to step up our game. We transition to a fascinating discussion about working with former power-hitter baseball player Howard Kendrick, who already possessed impressive power but needed help with angles in his golf swing. We break down the specific tweaks made to his posture, ball position, and grip to optimize his swing. Using his baseball background, we helped Howard understand the golf club as an extension of a bat, focusing on arm positioning and club face alignment. Through practical demonstrations and adjustments, Howard quickly grasped how to control his shots, hitting straight, left, and right, effectively translating his baseball skills into golf success.

(24:53) Mastering Golf Swing Basics

This chapter focuses on the importance of balance and simplicity in achieving an effective golf swing. I share a story about working with a former college athlete who was overly focused on the technical aspects of his swing. By emphasizing balance and straightforward techniques, such as stabilizing the stance and aligning the club through a small gate of golf tees, the athlete learned to swing with greater speed and precision. The conversation highlights the significance of establishing a solid foundation and visualizing key objectives before addressing more complex elements of the swing. We also explore the concept of timing and the realization that a golf swing occurs in a very short timeframe, underscoring the importance of focusing on the essentials rather than getting lost in intricate details.

(35:19) Club Fitting and Player Preference

This chapter focuses on the importance of proper golf club fitting and how it impacts athletic performance. We explore how athletes often have to make physical adjustments when using ill-fitting equipment, which can hinder their ability to perform at their best. The conversation emphasizes the significance of receiving a golf lesson from an instructor who understands the need for maintaining an athletic stance and posture. Additionally, the chapter highlights the value of seeking out a quality club fitter who is brand agnostic and offers a wide selection of equipment to ensure a perfect match for the player. We also discuss the wisdom of gifting golfers with gift certificates for lessons or fittings, allowing them to make personalized choices for their gear and instruction.

(43:28) Popular Titleist Golf Balls as Gifts

This chapter explores the universal appeal of gifting Titleist golf balls, particularly the Pro V1 and Pro V1x models. We discuss how these golf balls are widely recognized for their quality and control, making them a coveted gift among golfers. Even those who typically use other brands like Callaway, TaylorMade, Srixon, or Bridgestone would appreciate receiving a box of Titleist golf balls. The conversation highlights how golfers are likely to express gratitude for such a gift, and they would happily use them on the course, especially since they don't have to purchase them themselves. We also mention that even the Titleist AVX balls are a great choice, and emphasize that spending around $50 for a dozen Titleist balls is a worthwhile investment that will bring joy to any golfer.

(00:01) College Golfers' Dreams of Going Pro

This chapter explores the vibrant world of college golf and the challenges faced by aspiring professional golfers. We share insights on the NCAA basketball tournament's excitement and touch on the rising visibility of college golf competitions. Our conversation includes reflections on working with college golfers, the rarity of those not aiming for a pro career, and the similar skill levels between Division I and Division II players. We discuss the journey of athletes like Brooke Watson, who transitioned from being a Division III champion to a successful golf coach. Importantly, we emphasize the critical factors needed to pursue a professional golfing career, such as talent, time, financial support, and a robust support system. Through hard conversations, we highlight the importance of not discouraging young golfers' dreams while addressing the realities of the professional golfing life, including the need for unwavering support from loved ones to prevent seeds of doubt from undermining their aspirations.

(09:50) Pros and Cons of Turning Pro

This chapter explores the contrasting paths of professional athletes and the unique challenges faced by aspiring golf professionals. We discuss how most professional athletes secure their careers by the time they graduate college, often landing lucrative contracts and endorsements. In contrast, golfers face a different reality, often struggling to secure opportunities and financial backing. We share an intriguing story of a golfer who patiently waited in a parking lot for a chance to compete, highlighting the unpredictability of the sport. Additionally, we explore the experiences of talented golfers who choose not to pursue a professional career due to a lack of desire to compete frequently, the demands of travel, or external pressure from family. This chapter offers insight into the personal and professional choices faced by athletes in the world of golf.

(15:53) Practicing Under Pressure for Success

This chapter explores the journey of aspiring professional athletes, emphasizing the internal drive and dedication needed to succeed. We discuss the importance of having both financial and emotional support to pursue one's dreams and the sacrifices involved. Highlighting the necessity of self-assessment and improvement, we talk about the significance of confidence in performance, and how removing stress from gameplay can enhance skills. We share practical exercises, such as playing "worst ball" golf, to help young athletes build resilience and concentration under pressure. Finally, we touch on how these strategies can prepare individuals for high-stakes situations, reminiscent of the intense moments we all imagined as children playing sports.

(35:02) Intense Practice for Elite Performance

This chapter explores the remarkable discipline and intensity that elite athletes bring to their training and performance. By highlighting examples from various sports, we examine how athletes like Howard Kendrick, Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dennis Rodman achieve excellence through rigorous practice and a powerful drive to succeed. Their ability to harness their physical strength and mental focus allows them to perform at exceptional levels, even in different sports like golf. We discuss how this same intensity and dedication can be applied to aspiring athletes, particularly in the context of high school students aiming to play college golf. By emphasizing the difference between practicing until one gets it right versus practicing until one cannot get it wrong, we underline the importance of relentless dedication to achieving greatness.

(44:06) Committing to Golf Improvement

This chapter focuses on the importance of setting realistic goals and the level of commitment required to improve your golf game. We explore how aspiring to play at a higher level involves understanding the dedication and effort needed to achieve those aspirations. It's emphasized that while you don't have to aim for professional greatness, improving your performance from last year is attainable with the right mindset and approach. Practical ideas and tips are shared to help enhance your skills and enjoyment of the game. As always, we're here to support your golfing journey and encourage you to play better each time you hit the course.

21 May 2023You Should Be Playing Business Golf00:44:58

This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys, John Ashton and Jeff Smith discuss the reasons why playing Business Golf is a great idea for all salespeople. As a sales professional, there are several reasons why playing golf with clients can be beneficial and impressive. Here are three key reasons: Relationship Building: Golf is often considered a sport that facilitates relationship-building and networking. By playing golf with clients, salespeople have the opportunity to spend quality time in a relaxed setting outside the office environment. Golf rounds can span several hours, allowing for meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and the chance to develop personal connections. Building a strong rapport with clients can greatly enhance the sales process and increase the likelihood of successful partnerships. Trust and Credibility: Golf is often associated with trust and integrity in business settings. Playing golf demonstrates your willingness to invest time and effort in developing relationships and shows that you value your clients beyond just the transactional aspects. It allows salespeople to showcase their skills, character, and work ethic in a different light. Engaging in friendly competition while adhering to the rules and etiquette of the game can foster trust and credibility, which are crucial for successful sales relationships. Shared Experiences and Common Ground: Golf provides a shared experience that can help salespeople and clients find common ground and strengthen their connection. The game offers opportunities for camaraderie, shared challenges, and moments of celebration, fostering a sense of teamwork and collaboration. Being able to relate to clients on a personal level through a common interest like golf can break down barriers, facilitate open communication, and lead to a deeper understanding of their needs, preferences, and goals. This deeper understanding can be a valuable asset when customizing sales strategies and solutions for clients. By playing golf with clients, salesmen can enhance relationship-building, establish trust and credibility, and create shared experiences. These factors can significantly contribute to building long-term, successful partnerships and leave a lasting impression on clients, ultimately benefiting the sales process.

10 Jul 2023When The Lesson Didn't Work00:47:53

So many times after a lesson we get out on the range with what we’ve just been taught fresh in our minds and we start to practice and…it doesn’t work. Are we doing it wrong? Did we misunderstand? Probably not. Probably the problem is our body doesn’t move the way it should to accomplish the desired effect of the techniques we’ve just been taught. Gold Magazine Top 100 Teacher, Jeff Smith, this week talks about ways a teacher, or even you yourself, can run some diagnostics to determine how well your body can move and how you should swing the club accordingly. Sawing plane, swing path, ball position and body position all depend on how your body moves, on how far your hips turn and many more elements of movement that Jeff explains in great detail. And also, there is a video version of the podcast this week on YouTube. 06 Oct 2024The Lighter Side of Golf: Truth, Lies, and Swing00:44:53

(00:00) Golf Distance and Self-Perception

This chapter explores the nuances of golf distances and perceptions among golfers of various ages and skill levels. I discuss the average distance a golfer hits a seven iron, noting that it is often cited as 138 yards, but recognizing that this average can be misleading due to the broad range of golfer ages and abilities. Jeff Smith and I share our personal distances, with Jeff hitting his seven iron further than the average due to both his skill level and the elevation where he plays. We also humorously address exaggerated distance claims made by some senior golfers, highlighting how golfers often remember their best shots as their standard. Lastly, I recall attending Fuzzy Zoeller's Wolf Challenge, where I observed a variety of celebrity participants, underscoring the diversity and appeal of golf events.

(11:00) Honesty in Golf

This chapter touches on the themes of honesty and sportsmanship in golf. We start by addressing the famous movie quotes often misattributed, clarifying that "A man's got to know his limitations" is actually from "Magnum Force," not "Cool Hand Luke," which features "What we have here is a failure to communicate." Shifting to golf, we stress the importance of honesty about one's abilities on the course, emphasizing how inflated claims about driving distance are unimpressive. We share stories of golfing scrambles and the notorious cheating that often occurs, humorously recounting a scramble in Louisville where the police team won with an unbelievable score. We also explore the concept of "sandbagging" in golf—where players misrepresent their abilities, either to gain an advantage or to boost their ego—and question the motivations behind such behavior.

(23:28) Golf Handicap Misconceptions

This chapter explores the intricacies of the golf handicap system and its purpose as a representation of a golfer's potential. We break down common misconceptions, such as the belief that a handicap is a direct reflection of one's average score, and clarify how it actually accounts for a player's best potential performance. By analyzing a golfer's last 20 scores in relation to course and slope ratings, the system offers a fair way to compete across different levels of difficulty. We discuss how this system allows for fair competition, even against top players like Tiger Woods, by adjusting scores based on the course's challenges. We also touch on the issues of dishonesty in reporting scores and how that affects the perception of one's skill level. Ultimately, we emphasize the system's role in leveling the playing field and fostering fair competition, while acknowledging that not everyone reports their scores truthfully.

(34:21) Improving Your Golf Game

This chapter transports us to the beautiful mountains of Arizona, where we discuss the striking landscape surrounding the golf course and reminisce about the journey from cornfields to mountain vistas. We reflect on an intriguing story about Reggie Brooks, a former Notre Dame running back who scored a touchdown while unconscious, highlighting the unpredictable nature of sports. Shifting gears, we address the common reluctance among athletes to take golf lessons, despite their lifelong experience with coaching in other sports. We ponder why professional athletes, who understand the value of coaching, often shy away from lessons in golf, and emphasize the importance of seeking guidance to improve one's game. I share my personal experience of mastering the "hinge and thump" technique, illustrating the power of simplifying golf. Finally, we caution against emulating professional golfers without proper practice, stressing the need to approach the game in a way that suits one's own level and abilities.

17 Nov 2024Escaping Winter with Golf and Adventure00:46:41

(00:01) Golf Destinations for Winter Escape

This chapter explores the exciting events surrounding Jeff's daughter's wedding and the anticipation of future family milestones. As we shift gears, we address the seasonal transition many golfers face, particularly the impact of weather on golfing gear and where to store clubs during colder months. For those looking to escape the winter chill, we suggest warmer golfing destinations such as South Florida and Southern California. We also entertain the idea of creating a movie about golfers traveling the world in search of the perfect round, inspired by the iconic surfing film of the '70s. Wrapping up, I share my plans to spend winter in the beautiful Indian Wells area of Southern California, highlighting the appeal of golf-friendly climates.

(12:13) Southern Golf Destinations for Winter Escape

The unique blend of simplicity, elegance, and exceptional golfing experiences makes both destinations a golfer's paradise, whether in the warmth of Hilton Head or the festive atmosphere of Pinehurst.

(26:39) Retirement Golf RV Travel Ideas

This chapter takes us on a journey of contemplating retirement dreams and the allure of golf. We reminisce about a unique organization that paired RV enthusiasts with golf courses, allowing them to park overnight. The idea of traveling across the country, playing golf, and conducting golf schools as a retirement plan is enticing. We highlight Bill Pressey, a golf professional and inventor of the lie angle balanced putters, who now enjoys a retired life of travel and leisure. His invention has gained popularity, making putting more accessible for golfers. We humorously discuss conspiracy theories about practice greens at golf stores and reflect on the vast inventory of golf equipment and branded apparel in big-box stores. The chapter wraps up with a lighthearted observation about the pervasive nature of logos in the golfing world, akin to NASCAR sponsorships.

(35:35) Golf Swing Myths and Truths

This chapter tackles the frustration of finding genuine advice on improving your golf swing amidst a sea of online sales pitches and gimmicks. We highlight the issue with many online golf tips that promise to fix your slice, only to end up selling you expensive equipment or complicated swing methodologies. We discuss the concept of "shallowing" the club and how simple adjustments in your stance, like aiming slightly to the right, can change your swing angle effectively without altering your natural motion. We emphasize the importance of finding straightforward solutions that work for your unique body mechanics, rather than blindly following business models that may not suit your abilities.

(45:04) Golf Draw and Fade Technique

This chapter explores the art of hitting a draw in golf, emphasizing the importance of understanding club positioning and swing direction. We highlight how golfers like Rory McIlroy achieve this shot by setting up their stance to aim right while swinging slightly to the right of the target. Listeners are encouraged to learn the physics behind ball movement and improve their game by tuning in regularly. Jeff Smith is available to provide personalized advice through the new website, where listeners can submit questions and receive responses both on-air and privately. 26 Jan 2025How To Find Your Perfect Grip00:44:53

(00:01) Golf Instruction and Filtering Information

This chapter features a discussion on the overwhelming amount of information available online, particularly in the realm of golf. I, John Ashton, am joined by Jeff Smith, a top 100 golf teacher, as we explore the challenges faced by golfers in navigating the plethora of advice and tips available. We emphasize the importance of filtering this information effectively, suggesting that if advice doesn't consider fundamental aspects like grip, stance, or posture, it might not be useful. We also highlight the need for personalized guidance rather than one-size-fits-all solutions, cautioning against following advice that doesn't align with your unique setup and swing mechanics.

(12:16) Customizing Golf Grips for Success

This chapter explores the simplicity and effectiveness of customizing a golf grip based on an individual's natural arm hang. By instructing players to let their arms hang naturally and marking where their knuckles align on an imaginary club, I demonstrate how to establish a grip that feels comfortable and intuitive. The method is straightforward: aligning the mark with the top of the shaft, positioning the thumb correctly, and ensuring the club face remains square during the swing. This personalized approach allows golfers to find their unique grip without overcomplicating the process, leading to more accurate shots and faster improvement. The chapter emphasizes the importance of letting the body's natural mechanics guide the grip to enhance performance and enjoyment of the game.

(18:51) Simplifying Golf Swing Mechanics

This chapter explores the simplicity and natural feel of hitting a golf ball effectively. We discuss how many recreational golfers tend to overcomplicate their swing, making the process seem more difficult than it needs to be. By emphasizing the importance of a natural arm hang and grip, we reveal that the key to a successful swing is minimizing manipulation. This realization often surprises golfers, as they find that an uncomplicated approach leads to straighter and higher shots with greater ease. The conversation highlights the mental shift needed to achieve this, noting how overthinking can disrupt a golfer's natural ability. We also humorously acknowledge how golfers, despite being generally intelligent, can forget basic principles when they step onto the course. The goal is to help golfers understand that achieving a smooth, fluid swing is about maintaining simplicity and letting the body work naturally.

(23:16) Grip Variation in Golf Swing

This chapter tackles the complexities of golf grip techniques and emphasizes the importance of finding a grip that works for each individual golfer rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. We discuss the misconception that all professional golfers use the same grip, sharing insights from a study of 25 pros, which revealed significant variations in their grip styles. The conversation underscores that a grip suitable for one pro might not work for another due to differences in their physical attributes and swing objectives. We also highlight the risks of relying too heavily on generalized advice from books or online sources without considering personal suitability. Through a recent golf school experience, I stress the importance of understanding one's unique swing mechanics and maintaining focus on consistent practices that yield positive results, rather than constantly seeking new information. The goal is to encourage golfers to recognize what works for them and caution against the confusion that can arise from information overload.

(34:33) Optimizing Stance and Balance for Speed

This chapter focuses on the often overlooked fundamentals of improving a golf swing, emphasizing balance and setup over the swing mechanics themselves. We explore how starting positions, stance width, and foot flare can significantly enhance a golfer's ability to swing faster and maintain balance. By allowing golfers to find their personal "red line" or speed limit through experimentation, they can unleash their full potential without sacrificing stability. The conversation also draws parallels to baseball pitching, highlighting the importance of proper foot placement and pressure for generating power. Ultimately, we underscore that mastering these basics can make the game simpler and improve scoring, especially when dealing with uneven lies on the golf course.

(42:28) Mastering Timing and Performance in Golf

This chapter focuses on the importance of timing and confidence in golf, especially when making contact with the ball. We explore how nerves can lead to poor contact and how missed opportunities to communicate or act can affect performance. I share a story about a nervous new golfer who missed a swing, and demonstrate how to maintain composure and "sell" a miss as a practice swing. By keeping a calm demeanor and not letting mistakes affect you, you can regain your confidence and improve your game. The key takeaway is learning how to control your reaction and approach, ensuring better results in future golf outings.

25 Aug 2024From Slicing to Swinging: Jeff Smith's Golf Tips00:45:55

(00:00) On-Course Adjustments in Golf

This chapter covers the importance of making on-course adjustments during a round of golf, especially when faced with common issues like slicing. Jeff Smith explains that simply changing your aim to compensate for a slice is not effective, as it can exacerbate the problem. Instead, he suggests focusing on the relationship between the club face and the swing direction to make the ball fly more predictably. By aligning the club face correctly and adjusting the swing path, golfers can manage their shots better and avoid consistently poor results. We also explore practical techniques to adjust on the fly and ensure a more enjoyable and successful round of golf.

(10:14) Kitchen Adjustments for Busy Golfers

This chapter focuses on balancing a busy lifestyle with the convenience of home-cooked meals, especially for those who may not have the time or desire to cook. We explore the benefits of using meal kit services like HelloFresh, which offer quick and easy meal solutions. Jeff shares his personal experience of transitioning from relying on quick-fix meals like beefaroni to enjoying healthier, home-cooked options with minimal effort. Additionally, we touch on the importance of making adjustments both on the golf course and in the kitchen to improve overall quality of life.

(12:57) Golf Swing Alignment and Bunker Tips

This chapter addresses common issues in golf such as pulling shots to the left. We explore key checkpoints including alignment and ball position, emphasizing the importance of aligning the body correctly and positioning the ball appropriately for accurate shots. Techniques for checking alignment, such as using a club against the chest, and the impact of chest rotation on the backswing are discussed. Visual aids, like modified hula hoops, are highlighted as effective tools for teaching proper swing paths, especially to younger players unfamiliar with clock face analogies. Finally, adjustments for hitting from fairway bunkers are touched upon, stressing the need to select the right club for the shot.

(25:04) On-Course Golf Adjustments and Strategies

This chapter explores the nuances of making on-course adjustments to achieve a better golf shot, particularly when dealing with challenging lies. We discuss the importance of properly aligning the club face and how to position your body to maintain balance and precision. Key techniques include setting the club on the ground first to determine the direction, adjusting your stance according to the slope, and gripping the club last to ensure the correct shaft length. We also debunk common misconceptions, emphasizing that accepted truisms like aiming right for a ball above your feet aren't always accurate. By understanding and implementing these adjustments, golfers can improve their shots and avoid common pitfalls like chunked or topped balls.

(36:02) Strategic Golf Adjustments and Techniques

This chapter focuses on understanding how to make effective on-course adjustments in golf. We explore the importance of analyzing the ball's position and the necessary adjustments to the club face and handle to achieve the desired trajectory. We discuss how to logically determine the right approach by considering the specific needs of the shot, such as launching the ball high or getting it over an obstacle. Additionally, we address the common misconception about using the club's position on the ground to gauge trajectory and explain why factors like the shape of the club's sole and the ground's slope can lead to inaccurate readings. By emphasizing thoughtful planning and execution, we highlight how golfers can improve their shots by moving beyond guesswork and developing a purposeful approach.

(44:38) Improving Golf Stance and Footing

This chapter focuses on the critical importance of maintaining stable footing while playing golf, particularly when dealing with tricky lies like pine straw or fairway bunkers. Whether you're dealing with unstable surfaces or looking for general golfing advice, we cover how to handle these challenges effectively.

02 Jul 2023I Don't Move That Way00:47:50

So many times after a lesson we get out on the range with what we’ve just been taught fresh in our minds and we start to practice and…it doesn’t work. Are we doing it wrong? Did we misunderstand? Probably not. Probably the problem is our body doesn’t move the way it should to accomplish the desired effect of the techniques we’ve just been taught. Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, Jeff Smith, this week talks about ways a teacher, or even you yourself, can run some diagnostics to determine how well your body can move and how you should swing the club accordingly. Sawing plane, swing path, ball position and body position all depend on how your body moves, on how far your hips turn and many more elements of movement that Jeff explains in great detail. And also, there is a video version of the podcast this week on YouTube. If you’d like to see that instead of just listening to it, simply become a Golf Guys Insider by going to https://thoseweekendgolfgiuys.com and clicking the “Insiders” link on the top menu.

05 Jan 2025We Aim To Please. You Aim Too Please.00:44:53

Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Jeff Smith explains first why more of us amateur golfers miss on our approach shots. It’s because we set up in the wrong order. we set up to the ball and then we aim. That's backwards. First, align yourself to the target and then set up to the ball. Jeff gives us many ways to check and make sure our aim is correct. Listen close and never miss another green again because of a poor aim.

24 Nov 2024Unlocking Simplicity in Your Golf Game00:44:53

(00:01) Different Learning Styles in Golf

This chapter brings us into the world of golf instruction, exploring the nuances of teaching and learning the game. We, the Weekend Golf Guys, discuss how different personalities and cognitive styles impact the way people learn to play golf. Jeff Smith, a top 100 teacher, shares his experiences of working with diverse individuals, from analytical thinkers like accountants and engineers to creative minds such as artists and communicators. We emphasize the importance of tailoring teaching methods to fit the learner's mindset, whether it involves satisfying a logical, step-by-step approach or catering to a more fluid, imaginative process. By understanding these differences, we highlight how golfers can improve their game by aligning their learning style with their swing and shot visualization.

(12:13) Simplifying Golf Techniques for Success

This chapter focuses on the art of simplifying golf instruction to enhance learning and performance. We explore the importance of understanding individual learning styles, whether analytical or intuitive, and how adapting communication to suit these preferences can transform one's game. By emphasizing the 'what' rather than the 'how', golfers can better process and execute techniques, leading to immediate improvement. We recount examples of players who benefited from understanding the fundamental tasks of golf without overcomplicating them with technical jargon. Through real-life anecdotes, we illustrate how simple adjustments and understanding key concepts can make golf feel more approachable and enjoyable, highlighting that recreational golf need not be as challenging as often perceived.

(24:45) Simplified Golf Techniques for Success

This chapter explores the simplicity and effectiveness of playing golf without overthinking. We highlight the importance of being stable, comfortable, and balanced, rather than being bogged down by a checklist of techniques. Through real-life examples, we demonstrate how understanding one's stance and making small adjustments can significantly impact performance. The conversation includes insights on how the best players can fine-tune their setup to enhance their game. We emphasize the value of testing changes to see if they make a significant difference, focusing on setup adjustments rather than swing alterations. By sharing a story of a skilled player who struggled due to incorrect ball positioning, we illustrate how minor tweaks can lead to major improvements in consistency and shot quality. Ultimately, we stress the importance of simplifying thoughts and maintaining a natural approach to achieve better results on the golf course.

(39:46) Immediate Solutions in Golf Practice

This chapter focuses on the unexpected ease with which improvements can be made when pain is alleviated, challenging the assumption that some issues require long-term solutions. We explore the idea that sports, while seemingly simple at a recreational level, demand dedication and practice to achieve high-level performance. By setting aside time for consistent practice and incorporating fun into routines, athletes can refine their skills. Additionally, we reflect on the importance of not rushing through seasonal celebrations, advocating for the appreciation of Thanksgiving before transitioning into Christmas festivities. This sentiment underscores the need to be mindful and present in the moment, both in life and in sports practice.

(44:23) Gift Ideas for Golf Enthusiasts

This chapter offers crucial advice for holiday shopping for golfers, emphasizing that buying a golf club as a gift should be approached with caution. We stress the importance of avoiding purchasing a club unless the recipient has specified exactly what they want. Instead, consider giving a gift certificate, allowing the golfer to get fitted for their equipment, ensuring a perfect match. Additionally, we remind you not to overthink the game of golf itself—just swing and aim to improve with each round. Our tips are designed to enhance your golfing experience and gift-giving success this holiday season.

We talk about the thrill of attending Indiana University football games, celebrating their strong performance, and how that experience ties into the world of golf with the impressive IU golf course. We highlight the transformation of the course into a challenging terrain with unique holes, such as a par three that requires a driver due to its uphill distance, and a deceptive downhill wedge shot to a green that slopes away. The chapter captures the essence of fall golf and sports enthusiasm, showcasing memorable golf experiences intertwined with the excitement of college football.

(18:58) East Coast Unique Golf Courses

This chapter takes listeners on a journey through some of the most unique and memorable golf courses around the world, beginning with the extreme 19th hole in South Africa, which requires a helicopter ride to a tee perched 650 feet above a green shaped like the African continent. We then explore a similarly challenging hole at the Gatlinburg Country Club, nestled in the picturesque landscape of eastern Tennessee. The conversation shifts to the scenic golf offerings in North Carolina, including Tobacco Road, a public course that provides an exhilarating experience with its expansive fairways and natural beauty. Designed by the visionary Mike Strantz, Tobacco Road is lauded for its creativity and challenge. Through these stories, we explore the unexpected joys and surprises that come with playing golf in diverse environments.

(10:34) Improving Golf Swing Accuracy and Consistency

This chapter delves into the nuances of maintaining consistency in golf performance, even when facing sudden declines in skill. We discuss the experience of playing with high-caliber players and the unexpected struggles that can arise, such as erratic drives and misaligned swings. Practical advice is given on managing concentration and emotional detachment during a round, including strategies for maintaining focus only when necessary and avoiding frustration over poor shots. Emphasizing the importance of staying calm and objective, we explore how to recover mentally and physically from wayward shots to enhance overall performance on the golf course.

(23:11) Mastering Golf Ball Distance and Spin

This chapter covers essential exercises and techniques to improve your golf swing and increase distance. We discuss the three key factors for hitting the ball farther: ball speed, launch angle, and spin. Additionally, Jeff explains how to identify and eliminate power leaks in your swing to maximize energy transfer to the ball. By understanding and applying these principles, golfers can enhance their driving performance and achieve greater distance on their shots.

(33:58) Improving Golf Swing Efficiency and Speed

This chapter focuses on maximizing distance in golf through the three critical elements: ball speed, launch angle, and spin. Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 instructor, emphasizes the importance of center face contact for achieving optimal ball speed. He discusses the inefficiencies caused by improper clubface contact and how hitting the ball in the center can significantly improve performance. Additionally, we explore how a golfer's connection to the ground impacts power and clubhead speed. Jeff explains the importance of balance, proper leg flexion, and pushing from the balls of the feet to generate more force. By addressing these foundational aspects, golfers can see immediate improvements in their distance and overall game efficiency.

(44:02) Enhancing Golf Game Performance

This chapter explores my experience practicing with my eight iron in my garage, highlighting how a specific exercise has improved my game. I share how I managed to hit two eight irons perfectly, achieving a distance of 145 yards, which is farther than my usual. The shots felt amazing, with no sound or unpleasant vibrations, and I attribute this improvement to the exercise I've been doing. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of focusing on launch angle, ball speed, and spin to enhance your golfing performance.

15 Dec 2024Transform Your Golf Game: Unlocking Power, Perfecting Swing Sequence, and Mastering the Short Game00:46:12

(00:01) Power and Putting in Golf

This chapter explores the fundamentals of generating power in a golf swing, focusing on the crucial role of ground force. We examine how energy originates from our interaction with the ground and is transferred through our bodies to enhance swing speed. Through practical examples, like push-ups and spinning in a chair, we illustrate how pushing into an immovable object—like the ground—creates propulsion. We clarify misconceptions about timing, emphasizing that many golfers apply this force too late in their swings, reducing effectiveness. Insights from recent power schools highlight how understanding and timing ground force correctly can lead to improved swing performance and lower scores.

(14:41) Golf Swing Sequencing Tools and Tips

This chapter focuses on the importance of proper sequencing in a golf swing and how common issues can arise when the arms move faster than the torso. To address this, we explore simple and accessible tools to improve swing sequencing. We emphasize the benefits of using a rope to practice swings, as it naturally encourages the correct sequence from the lower body to the torso and arms, unlike other tools that allow for pushing. Additionally, we introduce a homemade device made from PVC pipe and a swim noodle to enhance the traditional method of using a club across the shoulders. This innovative tool provides comfort and a springy effect to help golfers rotate their chest effectively without discomfort. Through these practical solutions, we aim to help golfers achieve a more synchronized and powerful swing.

(26:07) Improving Distance With Tour Striker

This chapter highlights the importance of not just clubhead speed but also ball speed, spin, and launch angle in achieving greater distance in golf. We emphasize that striking the center of the clubface is crucial, as faster clubhead speed is ineffective if the ball is hit poorly. I introduce the Tour Striker club, designed by Martin Chuck, which helps golfers improve their striking by ensuring proper contact and de-lofting, resulting in better launch angles and smash factors. We also discuss how newer golf clubs might offer more forgiveness, but ultimately, skill in hitting the ball correctly remains key to maximizing distance. By practicing with specialized training tools and focusing on proper technique, anyone can improve their golf game and hit the ball farther without relying solely on the latest club technology.

(35:43) Mastering Short Game and Putting

This chapter explores the intricacies of improving short game performance in golf, particularly focusing on the importance of mastering wedge shots and putting techniques. We discuss how honing wedge shots can lead to better performance with longer irons, emphasizing the same fundamental principles. The conversation highlights common pitfalls in putting, such as overactive wrists and poor grip, which often lead to missed shots. I share insights on calming the wrists and achieving a more stable stroke by adjusting the grip to fit natural arm positions, thus minimizing face twists. Additionally, we address the debate over whether putting strokes should be straight back and through or arcing, clarifying that it can be a combination of both, depending on individual technique and putter design.

(45:14) Improving Pitching Leads to Successful 5-Iron

This chapter shares an anecdote about the significant improvements in golf skills, particularly in pitching, following Jeff's guidance. I recount how, despite previous struggles with the 5-iron, applying Jeff's advice on improving wedge shots has translated into better performance across other clubs. I describe a moment of success when hitting a 168-yard shot onto the green with the 5-iron, a club that had remained unused all season. The experience highlights the broader impact of honing specific skills on overall gameplay.

The conversation touches on the subtle art of maintaining a mental edge through seemingly simple actions, like practicing a putt after it's been conceded, to build confidence and unsettle the opponent. Additionally, we highlight the balance between mental games and pure skill, ultimately asserting that good golf skills are irreplaceable. This insightful discussion offers a glimpse into the mind games that complement the physical aspect of golf, with an understanding that both play crucial roles in winning matches.

The conversation also touches on cultural experiences, such as playing golf in Scotland, and highlights the enjoyment of adapting to the local customs, including forming a "four ball" and joining other players for a round. Alongside the golf discussion, there's a light-hearted reflection on the host's relocation to Indian Wells, California, the diverse community there, and a nostalgic mention of attending a Styx concert, contrasting the youthful vibe of the Coachella music festival.

(34:43) Navigating the Challenges of Alternate Shot

This chapter takes us through the dynamics and challenges of playing alternate shot format in golf, highlighting the importance of camaraderie and mutual understanding between partners. We explore the mental pressures unique to this format, emphasizing the added emotional burden of playing not just for oneself, but also to avoid disappointing a partner. The conversation touches on how golf is as much a mental game as it is physical, often bringing about emotional responses, particularly in high-stakes settings like junior tournaments. We discuss the importance of focusing on personal achievements rather than solely on competitive outcomes, acknowledging that individual progress can be overshadowed by the broader competitive context. Additionally, we reflect on the intricacies of golf handicaps and the potential misunderstandings they can create, underscoring the need for a balanced perspective on personal performance in the sport.

(44:05) Exploring Match Play Golf Variations

This chapter focuses on the exciting ways to enhance your golf experience through different game formats. 08 Sep 2024Elevate Your Game: Simple Tips for Better Golf00:44:53

(00:01) Golf and Football Banter With BetOnline

This chapter kicks off with the excitement of football season in the air, blending with the ongoing climactic events in the world of golf, such as the FedEx Cup at East Lake and the upcoming Corn Ferry Tour finals at French Lick, Indiana. Amidst this, Jeff and I share a lighthearted moment about IU football and the challenges they face in the Big Ten. Shifting gears, we express our growing disinterest in professional golf's financial disputes, instead focusing on the personal joys of coaching and working with various golfers, from amateurs to tour players. Finally, we acknowledge the intersection of sports and betting, highlighting how platforms like BetOnline have integrated golf into the betting scene, making it a year-round engagement for enthusiasts.

(12:13) Improving Golf Ball Launch Angle

This chapter explores the dynamics of achieving height in golf shots, prompted by John's recounting of a scramble where he hit a low five wood shot that rolled impressively close to the pin. Jeff Smith, a top golf teacher, breaks down the mechanics of getting the ball airborne, emphasizing the importance of striking the bottom of the golf ball with the club's bottom weight. He explains how the position of the ball in relation to the swing arc is crucial for achieving the desired height. Jeff advises identifying the lowest point of the swing and positioning the ball accordingly, cautioning against placing it too far back or forward. This chapter provides valuable insights into improving ball flight and achieving better shot height.

(24:07) Mastering the Hinge and Thump

This chapter focuses on mastering the "hinge and thump" technique for bunker shots and thick rough. By positioning the ball at the front of your stance and using a wrist hinge to create a steep angle of attack, you can effectively strike the ground below the ball without opening the clubface, reducing the risk of mis-hits. We discuss the importance of a steep downward motion combined with a forward body turn to ensure the clubhead makes clean contact. Real-life examples illustrate how proper execution of this method leads to successful shots, emphasizing that simplicity and letting the club do the work can yield better results than overcomplicating the technique.

(31:18) Mastering Bunker Shot Techniques

This chapter explores advanced bunker shot techniques and debunks common myths about loft in sand traps. I describe a scenario where I used an eight iron from a deep bunker with a six-foot lip, demonstrating how proper technique can achieve seemingly impossible shots without opening the club face. Additionally, I explain another trick shot where I turned the club sideways with negative loft to extract a ball plugged in the bunker face. By emphasizing the importance of getting the club below the ball and creating an explosion of sand, I illustrate how these methods can help golfers achieve better results in difficult bunker situations. We also draw an analogy to moving a spider in a swimming pool, reinforcing the concept of using an explosion of sand to propel the ball out of the bunker.

(35:23) Fine-Tuning Golf Swing Mechanics

This chapter focuses on the nuances of achieving the perfect golf swing, particularly when using a five wood on a par three or a three iron off the fairway. We explore techniques for avoiding thin shots by ensuring proper ball positioning and posture. Emphasizing the importance of understanding the ground conditions, we highlight the difference between skimming the top of the ground and making a solid, controlled impact. Practical advice is given on practicing swings away from the ball to find the natural bottom of the swing arc. The chapter underscores that small adjustments, such as ensuring the correct distance from the ball and the right shoulder height, can significantly improve shot accuracy and consistency.

(42:19) Frustrations and Misconceptions in Golf

This chapter explores the surprising statistic that only 5% of golfers can consistently break 80, despite the various challenges and unpredictable elements inherent in the game. We discuss the multitude of factors that can affect a golfer's performance, such as bad bounces off the cart path, gusts of wind altering ball trajectories, and the frustrating instances when a perfect shot ends up in a less-than-ideal situation. By examining these common scenarios, we highlight the unpredictable nature of golf and question the authenticity of some of the stories shared in golfer groups online. Ultimately, we encourage our listeners to persevere and aim for improvement, with the hope that they will soon join the ranks of those consistently breaking 80.

25 Jul 2024Enhancing Your Golf Game with New Rule Ideas00:45:57

(00:01) Golf Rules and Friendly Matches

This segment features a lively discussion on some proposed changes to golf rules that could benefit recreational players. John Ashton and Jeff Smith talk about the controversial idea of not having to play out of a divot in the fairway, suggesting it should be considered ground under repair until the grass grows back. They also humorously propose a rule where losing a ball should only cost a player $5 without an additional stroke penalty, especially in non-competitive games. Jeff brings up an interesting twist on handling out-of-bounds shots with the concept of a "brovisional," allowing players to drop a ball near the out-of-bounds area to speed up play. Throughout, they balance their suggestions with considerations for both friendly and competitive matches, aiming to make the game more enjoyable for weekend golfers.

(09:59) Rules and Etiquette in Golf

This segment unpacks the controversial USGA rule regarding teeing a ball outside of the tee markers. We explore the implications of the rule, which states that doing so incurs a one-stroke penalty but allows the ball to be teed up anywhere else on the course. We debate whether this could lead to players exploiting the rule by teeing up right next to the hole for easy birdies or eagles, and consider the potential chaos this could cause in professional tournaments like the US Open. Additionally, we touch on how strict adherence to certain golf rules can sometimes make the game less enjoyable for amateurs, and clarify the rule about accidental ball movement during a practice swing.

(23:25) Common Rule-Breaking in Golf

This segment explores the often informal and flexible nature of golf rules in casual play versus the strict adherence required in tournament settings. We highlight how common practices like mulligans, gimmies, and taking liberties with ball placement are not officially recognized but are frequently used by casual players to speed up the game or ensure a better lie. In contrast, we discuss the importance of strict rule enforcement in competitive play, where players and parents closely monitor ball positions to prevent any unfair advantage. We also touch on the need for players and their support teams to be knowledgeable about the rules to maintain fairness, particularly in junior tournaments, where some may try to exploit the rules. Overall, we examine the cultural differences between casual and competitive golf and the impact of these practices on the game.

(34:02) Improving Golf Skills With Training Grips

This segment delves into the rules of golf, focusing on those that may need revision or could enhance the game if altered. We explore the benefits of training grips, which help beginners achieve proper hand placement and see immediate success, making the game more enjoyable and less frustrating. By discussing a potential tiered system for training grips, we envision how this could cultivate a generation of skilled golfers who learn to compete effectively. Additionally, we touch on the issues of parents interfering in junior golf tournaments, highlighting the need for fair play and proper rule enforcement to foster genuine skill development.

(42:36) Value and Controversy of Golf Rules

This segmentexplores the significance of adhering to the rules in golf and life, emphasizing the integrity and character-building that come from facing challenges head-on rather than taking shortcuts. We discuss the value of playing by the official rules, even when they lead to difficult situations, as a metaphor for dealing with life's hardships without resorting to dishonesty. We also touch on the debate between those who strictly follow the rules and those who play more casually, highlighting the importance of a balanced perspective. Ultimately, we agree that while some rules might seem unnecessary, they collectively contribute to a fair and enjoyable game.

15 Sep 2024The Secret to Breaking 100: Smarter Golf Tactics00:44:53

(00:01) Golf Statistics and Instruction Discussion

This chapter explores the intriguing statistics of golfers' performance, highlighting that only 45% of golfers can break 100, while 29% can break 90, 5% can break 80, and a mere 1% can break 70. We discuss whether these figures might be skewed due to golfers not following or knowing the official rules, and the potential impact of this on their scores. We also consider the phenomenon of players manipulating their handicaps and the motivations behind it. Our discussion emphasizes the disparity between casual golfers and those striving for competitive excellence, and how this affects the broader golfing community.

(12:15) Reducing Golf Penalties and Errors

This chapter begins with a lighthearted piece of trivia about Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra's golfing habits, including their insistence on drinking while playing, which led to the innovation of the booze-filled golf cart. From there, we take a nostalgic journey through some of Las Vegas' iconic spots like the Desert Inn and the soon-to-be-redeveloped Mirage. Shifting focus to the game of golf, we break down "basic golf math," highlighting how every player starts with 54 shots and what factors contribute to increasing this number. We categorize different types of penalties that affect a golfer's score, including out-of-bounds shots, water hazards, and various "idiot penalties" such as poor club choice, bad alignment, and loss of focus. We emphasize the importance of smart decision-making on the course to minimize these penalties and ultimately improve one's game.

(20:44) Improving Golf Scores Through Smart Decisions

This chapter focuses on the often flawed decision-making processes golfers use when selecting clubs and planning shots. We discuss the common mistake of opting for a driver to hit a narrow landing zone instead of using a Threewood to land safely in a wider area. By questioning whether hitting a sand wedge from a perfect driver shot really improves scores significantly over using a pitching wedge, we highlight how minor differences in club selection rarely impact overall performance. We emphasize that trying to emulate professional golfers with advanced shots can lead to unnecessary penalties and higher scores. Through exploring statistics, such as the small percentage of golfers who break 70, we underscore the importance of practical shot selection and avoiding risky plays. We also touch on the common pitfalls of trying to make putts aggressively, which often results in longer return putts and inflated scores. The overall message encourages smarter, more strategic play rather than attempting overly ambitious shots.

(34:16) Analyzing Golf Math and Statistics

This chapter explores the intricacies of golf statistics, particularly focusing on the importance of distance versus accuracy off the tee for PGA professionals. We examine how the strategy of hitting longer drives, even at the expense of fairway accuracy, can be beneficial in the pro game due to the correlation between driving distance and earnings. We also discuss how the course setup, including rough thickness, impacts the effectiveness of different strategies. Additionally, we consider how statistics might not fully capture a player's intent or success, especially in cases where a shot meets the player's goals but misses the fairway by a narrow margin. Finally, we touch on how amateur golfers might find hitting from the rough more manageable than from tightly mown fairways, further complicating the relationship between fairway accuracy and overall performance.

(43:09) Golf Mental Shift for Fairway Success

This chapter explores the mental game of golf, particularly the importance of maintaining a positive perspective when approaching shots. We discuss how golfers often psych themselves out, causing tension and impacting their performance. By visualizing the fairway as being filled with 643 golf balls, each representing a possible successful shot, we can shift our mindset and reduce anxiety. This change in perspective helps golfers feel more confident and relaxed, leading to straighter shots without any physical adjustments. The chapter emphasizes that much of the challenge in hitting fairways is mental, and with the right mindset, anyone can improve their game.

18 Feb 2024If You Use Mulligans You Should Add Using Gilligans For More Fun00:45:57

The main topic of todays' episode is a few twists to some money (dare we say gambling?) games on the course. Many of us use Milligans. That of course is an official "do over" when we have a bad shot. Prior to Teeing off we will decide how many Mulligans per side each player will get.

But now we suggest adding the "Gilligan". That is also a "do over" but a "do over" demanded by one of the others in your group. Let's say you hit the shot of your life. On a Par 5 you stripe a fairway wood and it rolls up on the green. Chance at an eagle putt. But since I am such a good friend and competitor I will say, "WOW! What a great shot man. Now do it again."

Yeah, I can call a Gilligan on any shot (however many times we agreed on. Same number as Mulligans). I can make any shot that I thnk might really hurt my chances of winnng the hole null and void. We think this will add a whole new dimension of fun to your next round.

Also Jeff expains how to play the game "Wolf" correctly. It's a whole episode on making your next round more fun if not more prfitable

11 Feb 2024How To Ascertain And Adapt To Green Speeds00:45:57

Jeff explains to John (and everyone else) how to predict the green speed. Many techniques to use like  simply walk on the green. Is it spongy (slow) or firm (fast)? Is the grass dark or shiny? That tells you if the grass is growing toward you (slower, more friction) or away from you (faster, less friction).

Jeff also offers some tips and techniques on how to handle the different speeds once you are able to predict the speed acurately.

01 Sep 2024Secrets to Effortless Power in Your Golf Swing00:44:45

(00:01) Improving Golf Performance With Efficiency

This chapter takes us to the mountains of Arizona, where Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher, is enjoying the dry heat and cooler evenings without the need for air conditioning. We compare the climate differences between Arizona and the humid Midwest and Southeast, reflecting on how the dry heat impacts comfort on the golf course. Jeff shares an interesting experience from his Power School at Talking Rock Ranch, where he helped four older golfers significantly increase their driver speed by eliminating inefficiencies rather than changing their swings. The concept of effortless power versus powerless effort is highlighted, showcasing the importance of using the entire body effectively in golf.

(16:48) Making Your Golf Swing More Efficient

This chapter focuses on the concept of weight transfer in golf and the common inefficiencies that players experience. We discuss how lateral movement can disrupt the timing of rotary and vertical movements, causing power leaks. By using the analogy of a garden hose with holes, we explain how energy leaks can prevent golfers from maximizing their power. Emphasizing the importance of planting the back foot correctly, we illustrate how to generate force effectively by pushing against the ground, which in turn enhances power transfer and shot efficiency. As we continue, we touch on ground reaction forces and how leveraging them can lead to better drives and shots. The aim is to help golfers plug these power leaks and achieve more powerful and efficient swings.

(26:15) Mastering Golf Grip Efficiency

This chapter focuses on the importance of understanding and adapting the golf grip to improve control and performance. We explore the resistance both players and instructors often have towards grip changes, emphasizing the necessity of aligning the grip with the natural hang of the arm. Through practical steps, such as isolating the lead hand and ensuring the club's position is natural and comfortable, we illustrate how these adjustments can enhance control and reduce unwanted rotation. The conversation highlights that by making these subtle, intuitive changes, golfers can achieve more consistent and effective results, ultimately building trust and confidence in their swing.

(34:26) Utilizing Right Hand Force in Golf

This chapter explores the importance of the right hand in golf swing mechanics, challenging the common misconception that golf is primarily a left-side dominant sport. We discuss how understanding the movement of the right shoulder, elbow, and hand can significantly impact club delivery and overall performance. By emphasizing the role of the right hand in generating club head speed and applying force to the backside of the shaft, we highlight how this can lead to more accurate and powerful shots. We use analogies from tennis and hockey to illustrate the natural use of the right hand in sports, urging golfers to apply similar logic to their swings. Finally, we share a practical exercise where golfers hit balls with only their right hand to demonstrate the potential benefits of integrating this approach when both hands are on the club.

(38:34) Maximizing Golf Club Efficiency

This chapter explores how to maximize the force applied to a golf club to achieve greater ball speed and distance. We discuss the importance of proper grip, especially focusing on the right hand for right-handed golfers, and how to apply pressure effectively. By understanding the correct positioning and usage of the right hand, golfers can prevent the club face from twisting, which often leads to bad shots. We emphasize the role of the body in generating force, starting from the ground up, and how to ensure this force is efficiently transferred to the ball. Key exercises are recommended to practice center face contact and maintain stability during the swing. The overall message is to utilize your natural abilities effectively by avoiding common mistakes in grip and movement to enhance your golfing performance.

(43:27) Perfecting Golf Swing Efficiency

This chapter focuses on the importance of applying force to the backside of the golf shaft to optimize energy usage in your swing. We explore how using an alignment stick can help golfers understand the mechanics of their swing by listening to the "whoosh" sound it makes. By practicing and ensuring the loudest "whoosh" happens near the left leg, golfers can improve their swing speed and distance. We provide practical advice on using feedback from the alignment stick to refine your technique and enhance your overall performance on the golf course.

This week, Those Weekend Golf Guys try to explain the various ways to tell if your clubs are still working “up to par” or if they need to be repaired, regripped, or replaced. Will new grips help> Are the grooves worn? Which clubs wear out fastest and do you have to replace the whole set or can you do club by club, one at a time? These are all questions you may find when answered, the reason you are not scoring as well as you’d like is your clubs aren’t up to snuff and need to be fixed or replaced.

30 Mar 2025Revamp Your Game: Discovering the Latest in Golf Equipment and Trends00:44:53

(00:00) Understanding Golf Equipment Innovations

This chapter addresses the curious topic of mini drivers in the golfing world. I question why golfers might choose a mini driver, often likened to a two wood, and whether its unique features truly offer benefits over traditional drivers and fairway woods. We explore how the shorter shaft of a mini driver allows for greater control and center face contact, which can enhance distance and accuracy, key selling points for golf equipment. Additionally, we compare the design and functionality of mini drivers to traditional three woods, noting that the mini driver’s larger face and modified sole plate make it suitable for tee shots but less effective in rough conditions. This prompts a broader conversation about why more golfers don't simply shorten their driver shafts for improved performance. Finally, we consider which club a mini driver might replace in a golfer's bag, highlighting the trade-offs in performance and usability.

(13:06) Improving Golf Game With Balanced Putter

This chapter focuses on the intricacies of golf putting, particularly the role of lie angle balance in putters. We explore the benefits of using a lie angle balanced putter, emphasizing its ability to maintain alignment and prevent twisting, thereby enhancing performance. Various putter designs, including the original Directed Force and DF3, are discussed for their stability and aesthetics. The importance of proper fitting for these putters is highlighted, noting how an ideal fit can significantly improve a golfer's game. Anecdotes about golfers who prioritize aesthetics over performance and the challenges of obtaining these popular putters due to high demand are shared. The conversation underscores the impact of improved putting on overall golf performance and the value of combining fitting with putting techniques to save strokes on the course.

(23:35) Exploring Golf Equipment Innovations

This chapter explores the fascinating world of golf innovation, particularly focusing on the introduction of 3D-printed irons and clubs with bulge and roll technology. We examine the pros and cons of these advancements, considering how they might add complexity for the average golfer while offering potential advantages. We reflect on past innovations like graphite shafts and metal club heads, which initially faced skepticism but eventually revolutionized the game. We also revisit the concept of single-length irons, a polarizing idea tested by players like Bryson DeChambeau and brands such as Cobra and Wilson. The discussion highlights the challenges these clubs present, especially with long-shafted wedges and short-shafted long irons, emphasizing the importance of balance in design to enhance performance without complicating play.

(35:54) Golf Gear Maintenance and Trends

This chapter focuses on the excitement and preparation for the upcoming golf season, with a particular emphasis on cleaning and maintaining golf equipment. We discuss the process of cleaning club heads and grips, as well as taking inventory of golf balls and other equipment. The conversation also touches on the experience of attending golf shows, which sometimes feel more like flea markets, and the benefits of participating in golf tournaments that offer perks like new grips. We highlight the importance of having properly gripped clubs and contemplate the need for new golf shoes, debating the merits of spiked versus spikeless designs. Emphasizing performance, we conclude that while trends may lean toward spikeless shoes, serious golfers benefit from the stability and traction that spiked shoes provide, especially on uneven terrain.

(44:11) Importance of Golf Shoe Spikes

This chapter focuses on the importance of proper footwear in golf, emphasizing that traditional golf spikes provide the best traction on the course. We explore the misconception that casual shoes like slippers or tennis shoes are sufficient for playing good golf. Instead, we advocate for using spiked shoes to ensure stability and enhance performance. With a nod to the enduring truth about footwear in golf, we remind listeners to equip themselves with the right shoes to anchor effectively to the ground during play.

02 Feb 2025The Secret to a Powerful Golf Swing00:44:53

(00:01) Weekend Golf Guys

This chapter explores the lighthearted banter and golfing wisdom shared between John Ashton and Jeff Smith. As the winter thaw begins, we touch on the humorous differences in climate between snow-laden Indiana and sunny Southern California. Jeff recounts a playful exchange with a director of golf about the unexpected presence of clouds in California, highlighting his signature sarcastic humor. Shifting gears, we address the often confusing advice given on how tightly to grip a golf club, critiquing vague analogies like holding a bird or a tube of toothpaste. Jeff shares a practical experiment he conducted with a squeezy ball to illustrate how grip strength is subjective and varies from person to person. Through this exercise, we emphasize the need for individualized understanding of grip strength to improve one's golf game.

(12:08) Improved Grip Pressure for Better Control

This chapter focuses on the importance of grip control in improving a golfer's game. We emphasize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to finding the right grip pressure, but achieving the right grip is crucial for consistent performance. I share an exercise where golfers use only their left hand to test their control during a backswing, often revealing a lack of grip stability. By adjusting the placement of the club in the hand, particularly at the base of the pinky finger, golfers experience better control and power. This newfound control not only enhances ball striking but also boosts confidence, leading to improved overall performance. Through this simple adjustment, golfers feel a stronger connection with the club, making it an extension of their arm, without altering their grip orientation in a way that feels uncomfortable.

(23:54) Right Hand Force in Golf

This chapter explores the transformative process of improving golf skills, starting with the short game to build confidence and control. We begin by focusing on the importance of making solid contact with the ball and understanding the mechanics behind it. By addressing common issues like scuffing and sculling, we help players achieve immediate success and comfort around the greens. As they progress, they gain control over longer shots, seeing straighter and cleaner ball flights. The discussion highlights the significance of using both hands effectively, particularly the often-overlooked role of the right hand, in enhancing performance. Through practical exercises and common-sense comparisons to other sports, we demonstrate the importance of applying pressure to the backside of the shaft for better control and power. The goal is to shift the mindset from simply turning the body to engaging the hands actively, leading to more accurate and powerful swings.

(34:40) Generating Power Through Firm Foundations

This chapter explores the essential role of stability and a solid base in generating power during athletic movements. We examine how athletes, from golfers to baseball and tennis players, leverage a firm connection to the ground to maximize force and efficiency. By using examples such as the stance of a pitcher or the balance of a tennis player, we illustrate how coiling against a stable base enhances performance. A key takeaway is the transformation seen in a golfer's swing when proper stance adjustments are made, resulting in a significant increase in driving distance. This insight underscores the importance of efficient energy use and the potential for improvement by refining one's foundational technique.

Additionally, we express gratitude for Kelly's return and her travel stories, and we encourage listeners to try the bunker tip the next time they find themselves in the sand. Enjoy this insightful and engaging conversation on improving your golf game.

19 Mar 2023USGA-Roll Back This!00:47:50

The USGA and The R7A are proposing a new rule that will “Roll Back” the golf ball. They think the ball is too hot and is making some of the golf courses the PGA Tour plays on obsolete. Well, Jeff Smith and John Ashton think that would be a stupid thing for the USGA and the R&A to do and mince no words in a scathing attack on the idea on this week’s Those Weekend Golf Guys Show. As Jeff says, “since you are so good, we have to penalize you”. There is a perfect answer to this problem, and its not to “roll back” the golf ball so it doesn’t fly as far. It sounds like the proposal would reduce a 300 yard drive by about 15 yards. The answer is “agronomy”. Plant some trees, build some bunkers, keep the rough a bit rougher, narrow the fairways. There are lots of things to do to cut back the distance of the world’s “Elite Golfers” without ruining the golf experience for the rest of us.

29 Dec 2024Skillful Swing Secrets for Every Golfer00:44:53

(00:01) Golf Equipment Rules and Performance

This chapter addresses the misconceptions surrounding golf equipment and its impact on improving one's game. We emphasize that buying new, expensive clubs won't drastically change your performance if you're not already skilled with your current set. Our discussion with James Hong highlights that proper lessons can be more beneficial than acquiring new gear. We also explore the USGA's proposed rule changes and their potential effects on older golf equipment, expressing skepticism about the necessity of these changes for amateur golfers. Additionally, we consider how distance achievements can motivate golfers, particularly older players, and how rolling back equipment capabilities could diminish that motivation. Ultimately, we underscore the importance of skill development over equipment upgrades in achieving a better golf game.

(09:14) Improving Golf Game Through Strategy

This chapter addresses the challenges faced by golfers as they adapt to changes in equipment regulations and the impact on their game. We explore how new rules, such as making golf balls fly shorter distances, affect players, especially those not playing professionally. We discuss the importance of making golf more accessible for casual players by allowing them to use training aids like grip-enhancing clubs, even if they're not technically legal in competitions. The conversation highlights the benefits of proper grip and technique, leading to improved performance and enjoyment of the game. We also emphasize the importance of seeking guidance from experienced instructors to help break personal golfing milestones, such as scoring under 90, 80, or even 70, by focusing on consistent practice and technique rather than relying solely on new equipment.

(13:54) Strategies for Improving Golf Game

This chapter explores strategies for breaking 90 in golf, focusing on understanding individual strengths and weaknesses. We discuss the importance of identifying areas that need improvement, like scoring from inside 50 yards, and the misconceptions players often have about par expectations. Emphasizing the need for realistic play, we suggest that golfers consider each hole strategically, turning challenging par fours into personal par fives to avoid unnecessary risks. We also highlight the importance of selecting the right clubs and staying within one's comfort zone to prevent double or triple bogeys. Additionally, we stress the significance of putting, encouraging golfers to pay attention to their three-putt statistics and make adjustments to save strokes. Throughout, we underline the necessity of honest self-assessment and smart decision-making to achieve personal golfing goals.

(24:19) Indoor Golf Practice Strategies

This chapter explores effective strategies for improving golf skills when outdoor practice is limited. I discuss the importance of maintaining communication with students, using tools like OnForm Golf to provide ongoing feedback and support. I emphasize that practice doesn't always require hitting a ball, highlighting creative indoor methods such as dry swings with a ribbon attached to the club for visual feedback, and chipping pennies onto a sofa to develop touch and precision. Additionally, we explore the benefits of practicing short game swings without a ball to internalize the feel of different distances. These techniques not only build confidence but also ensure that golfers continue to improve their skills, even when they can't practice on the grass.

(29:03) Improving Golf With Ping Pong Balls

This chapter covers practical tips for improving golf swings without the need for hitting actual golf balls, highlighting the effectiveness of practicing with ping pong balls. By using the clock method and experimenting with swing lengths, we emphasize the importance of consistency and understanding one's own swing distances. For indoor practice, we extol the virtues of ping pong balls as a safe, effective, and inexpensive tool that doesn't damage surroundings. The ability to spin these balls and observe their motion helps in learning about the spin axis of a golf ball, making them an excellent resource for indoor practice. As we continue our journey to break 80 this season, Jeff Smith and James Hong provide valuable insights and encouragement, underscoring the accessibility and practicality of golf practice in any setting.

(42:39) Improving Golf Game Through Instruction

This chapter emphasizes the importance of putting practice, especially on a 30-foot mat, to improve your golf game by focusing on speed control and shot placement. We explore the benefits of reducing the number of putts, which can significantly lower your overall score, potentially taking you from not breaking 90 to nearly reaching 80. We stress that achieving this improvement doesn't require expensive equipment but rather finding a PGA professional you trust and can relate to for guidance. Additionally, we encourage seeking recommendations from fellow golfers for the best local instructors. Lastly, we invite listeners to join us regularly and reach out with any specific questions to benefit from the expertise of top golf instructors like Jeff Smith.

This chapter takes us back to a previous summer episode, where we chat about the sweltering conditions in Arizona and the difference a dry heat makes compared to the humid South. We reminisce about an impressive golf experience at Calusa Pines in Florida, known for its rare elevation changes reminiscent of Pinehurst, despite Florida's typically flat terrain. We also touch on the challenges posed by the tricky Donald Ross-designed greens, like those at Pinehurst and French Lick, emphasizing how their undulating surfaces test even the best players. Highlighting Ava Bunker's recent performance at Pinehurst during the North South Junior, we explore how these notorious greens can make or break a golfer's day.

(12:24) Wind and Putting Techniques

This chapter explores how wind can significantly impact a golfer's putt, especially on greens with varying speeds. Starting with the basics, we examine how wind affects putts on municipal course greens rolling at a nine on the stimp meter, requiring about a two-club wind to make a difference. On faster greens rolling at a ten or more, a one-club wind is sufficient. After conducting a power school class where participants improved their ball speed and distance, we transition to understanding wind's influence on putting. Through practical demonstrations using aim point techniques, we illustrate how a two-club wind can negate the natural break of a downhill putt. By rolling balls down a ramp, we observe how gusts of wind can alter the ball's trajectory, emphasizing the need to judge wind conditions carefully. The discussion highlights the nuanced relationship between wind, ball speed, and putting strategies, particularly on downhill versus uphill putts.

(24:21) Improving Golf Swing for Wind Resistance

This chapter explores techniques for improving golf swings, particularly focusing on achieving a square clubface to reduce spin and enhance ball speed. We discuss how many golfers inadvertently create glancing blows due to improper form, resulting in increased spin and less control, especially in windy conditions. A practical drill using a carwash sponge is introduced, where the sound produced upon impact provides immediate feedback on the squareness of the clubface. The exercise can be enhanced by wetting the sponge or wrapping it in a towel for added resistance, helping golfers feel the power needed for a direct hit. While the drill is primarily designed for drivers due to their flat face, alternative methods for practicing with irons are also suggested. The emphasis is on experiencing the feel of a direct, powerful impact, which can significantly improve distance and accuracy.

(31:51) Wind Resistance Golf Techniques

This chapter focuses on the challenges golfers face when dealing with wind on the course and the importance of striking the ball solidly to overcome these obstacles. We compare learning the basics in class to facing real-world complexities, highlighting how a solid shot is crucial regardless of weather conditions. There's a discussion on common misconceptions about altering techniques, such as moving the ball forward to combat wind, and how such adjustments often lead to poor contact and weak shots. We emphasize the necessity for amateur golfers to master hitting the center of the clubface before attempting advanced strategies like using the wind to their advantage. We share humorous anecdotes about playing with partners who overestimate their skills and provide practical advice on simplifying their approach to improve consistency and reduce ball loss.

(43:17) Putting Techniques for Windy Conditions

This chapter focuses on a unique putting technique that initially drew skepticism but ultimately gained popularity among a group of golfers. I share my experience of how this unconventional method, which involves putting to the fringe rather than directly to the hole, made sense after explaining the reasoning behind it. As more people adopted this approach, it became a staple practice within the group. Additionally, we highlight the importance of consistently listening to the advice shared on the show, especially when it comes to improving skills like playing in the wind.

26 Feb 2023Swing Faster, Faster00:48:01

This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys you will hear three great ways to increase your swing speed. And we all know that sing speed is the best way to assure longer drives and better ball flight. Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine’s Top100 Teachers, runs down his 3 techniques to speed up your swing speed. The first way is to make sure your grip is not too tight on the club. He says the grip should be “soft” but not “loose”. Because when your grip Is too tight your rms and wrists do not function correctly and slow down your swing. The second technique to speed up your swing is to learn how to properly use your legs to “push off” the ground. Jeff describes in detail some routines to practice doing that push off sufficiently. And the third technique involves your core muscles. As Tiger Woods said about his game recently, “I can’t push off with my legs like I used to so I have to rely on my core, and my core is stronger than ever.” Jeff Smith has some pretty cool and inexpensive ways to improve core strength in a short amount of time. So, after this week’s episode, your swing will be faster so your shots will be longer! All thanks to the Second Best Golf Show In The World, Those Weekend Golf Guys

26 Mar 2023There Is No Right Or Wrong Way To Play Golf00:47:44

Those weekend Golf Guys are here this week with their semi-regular reminder that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to play golf. There are ways to swing the club that are not compatible with your body’s motion. There are ways to move that might be inhibited by your flexibility, or lack thereof. But keep in mind there are myriad ways to be successful at this game. Some have short backswings (like Jon Rahm). Others have long backswings (like Justin Thomas). Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazines Top 100 Teachers, also describes the transition; that short period of time when the backswing stops and the downswing begins. Get this right for you and your game will improve noticeably. This is one of those programs where a simple listen (OK. Maybe take some notes too) will make you a much better golfer the very next time you head out to the course.

22 Dec 2024A Golfer's Guide to Holiday Bliss00:44:52

(00:01) Gifts for Golfers During the Holidays

This chapter captures the festive spirit of the holiday season as we navigate through the art of gift-giving for golfers. With Christmas just around the corner, we discuss the do's and don'ts of selecting presents for the golf enthusiast in your life. Emphasizing the value of gifting experiences over material goods, we recommend giving the gift of golf instruction or a gift certificate to a favorite golf store, allowing golfers to choose what they truly need. We caution against buying specific clubs, shoes, or shirts, as personal preferences in these areas are often quite particular. However, one universal gift suggestion stands out: Titleist Pro V1 golf balls, which are widely appreciated by golfers despite their brand loyalties. Our lighthearted conversation is interspersed with humorous anecdotes and practical advice, ensuring you're well-prepared to avoid the dreaded lump of coal in your holiday shopping.

(12:17) Improving Golf Game With Unique Swings

This chapter explores the intersection of golf, celebrity interviews, and a dash of humor as we discuss an upcoming golf tour company started by Bachelor star Ben Higgins and his friends, with plans for a trip to French Lick, Indiana. We highlight French Lick Resort as a great destination for golfers and non-golfers alike. A light-hearted discussion unfolds about a friend who plays Santa Claus and struggles with his golf swing, which humorously mimics Santa's approach down a chimney. By making simple adjustments to his stance and ball position, I help him hit straight shots, proving that even without major swing changes, better golf is possible. The chapter wraps up with a playful exchange about how giving the gift of improved golf can be as joyful as Christmas itself.

(23:27) Improving Golf Performance Through Adjustments

This chapter explores the challenges and considerations involved in tailoring golf techniques to individual body types and abilities. We discuss the humorous yet insightful analogy of a golfer with a Santa Claus-like belly, emphasizing the importance of adapting techniques based on personal physical attributes. We also highlight the need for personalized approaches, whether it involves learning to turn more effectively or adjusting foot positioning for better swing dynamics. Moreover, we address the limitations of the "swing your own swing" philosophy, noting that for some golfers, especially those with excessive flexibility or improper grip, strategic adjustments are necessary to achieve consistency and power. By recognizing these unique needs, we can help golfers improve their game by making thoughtful changes rather than adhering strictly to one-size-fits-all advice.

(34:50) Winter Golf Adventures and Misadventures

This chapter takes us through a lively conversation about winter activities in the Midwest and beyond, focusing on snowmobiling, wildlife encounters, and the unique allure of winter golf. We explore the thrill of snowmobiling and the unexpected adventures that come with wildlife like moose and elk. The discussion then shifts to the transformation of golf courses during winter, where they become playgrounds for sledding and cross-country skiing. We humorously touch on the quirks of playing golf in the snow, with tales of daring golfers hitting balls off frozen lakes and using brightly colored balls to navigate snowy fairways. The conversation wraps up with a nod to the increasing number of indoor golf venues providing enthusiasts with their much-needed golf fix during the cold months.

(41:23) Winter Golf Accessories for Golfers

This chapter explores the practicalities and humorous anecdotes surrounding golfing in cold weather, focusing on the use of propane heaters and cart covers to stay warm. We discuss the creativity of golfers who brave the elements, such as using mittens to keep warm between swings, and share the practicality of gifting these items to avid golfers. For those seeking gift ideas, we highlight the benefits of a propane heater and cart cover as thoughtful gifts for golf enthusiasts who don't mind chilly conditions. Additionally, we recommend gift certificates for favorite stores, golf lessons, or rounds of golf as excellent alternatives, especially during the holiday season. Whether you're trying to keep your golfer entertained during the winter or simply want them out of the house for a few hours, these suggestions aim to satisfy both the golfer and the gift-giver.

11 Jun 2023Sandbaggers And How To Spot Them00:47:49

Are you a sandbagger? Are you one of those guys who manipulates his handicap to reflect a higher index than you play to? Every club has one or two of twelve of them. You know who they are too. Theu are the ones who win every time there is money of good prizes up for grabs. Well this week Those Weekend Golf Guys discuss sandbagging in all its forms. How to spot it. How to do it. How to do it so you don’t look so suspicious! But remember, a handicap does not reflect your average score over par. It reflects your possible BEST score! The USGA has found that if a player plays 50 rounds in a year, he will average scoring what his handicap would dictate only once. That’s right! Only once in 50 rounds. So those of you who play to their handicap every time there is money on the line are doing it wrong. Listen to this episode and learn how to either spot a sandbagger or become better at doi9ng it.

23 Jul 2023How To Get A Hole-In-One00:47:50

This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys we talk about a couple different things. First, Jeff was at the American Junior Girls Tourney in Colorado Springs and watched his own student miss the cut by only 3 strokes. But he also saw her barely miss a Hole-In-One. Her Tee shot hit the flag stick and bounced away instead of down. Bad break. But that brought us to discuss how easy is it to get a hole-in-one? Jeff talks the odds and the technique. We also talk to the inventor of one of those golf bags that when you see it you say, ·why didn·t I think of that?· Well it·s a remarkable bag, all-in one type with wheels if you want them, stand if you need it and the ability to attach to a cart when you are riding. It·s also not only a great idea, it·s available to all Weekend Golf Guys listeners if you go to http://revolvegolf.com and use the code ·weekendgolfguys· for $50 off so you·ll pay $200 not $250. Listen and enjoy the second Best Golf Show In The World.

(24:53) Optimizing Golf Swing With Age

This chapter focuses on the adjustments and mindset shifts necessary for aging golfers to maintain their game. We emphasize the importance of managing expectations, especially regarding distance loss as players age. Strategies to minimize distance loss include maintaining physical fitness without excessive gym routines and adjusting one's swing style. By exploring different swing styles, such as those of Tommy Fleetwood and Vijay Singh, we discuss finding a technique that suits an individual's natural movement. Additionally, we address the challenge of conflicting advice from instructors and tipsters, highlighting the need for golfers to focus on what aligns with their body's capabilities rather than blindly following trends or professional golfers' techniques. The importance of personalized instruction and avoiding one-size-fits-all tips is stressed, encouraging players to develop a game plan that works uniquely for them.

(30:48) Indoor Golf Technology Advancements

This chapter explores the humorous and often frustrating world of unsolicited golf advice, as we share anecdotes about how well-intentioned tips from fellow golfers can sometimes derail a round.
