On this episode of This Week in Linux, we've got so much news it's kind of ridiculous! We've got a new kernel release with Linux 5.7. SpaceX Used Linux to send NASA Astronauts into Orbit. KDE released the latest version of their Plasma desktop environment with Plasma 5.19. We've got a lot of hardware news this week because Pine64 announced that the PineTab is now available for PreOrder. Lenovo announced that they will certify their full ThinkPad line for Linux. System76 announced their New 12-Core AMD Ryzen powered laptop, the Serval. Linux Mint has been in the news with a controversial topic related to Snaps and Chromium. Destination Linux, a podcast that I co-host, had a livestream this week at the SouthEast LinuxFest conference. Peertube announced the release of version 2.2.0 which brings some much needed improvements to this YouTube alternative software. I found some really interesting projects that we're going to talk about. The first being a project called Weylus, which lets you use a touchscreen tablet as a drawing tablet in Linux. The other being a Linux Distro with a python userland called Snakeware. All that and much more on Your Weekly Source for Linux GNews!

04 Oct 2020 | This Week in Linux 119: Fedora 33 Beta, OBS Studio 26, Purism's AweSIM Cellular Service | 00:47:46
On this episode of This Week in Linux, we've got a lot of exciting news and even some "is this really happening?" news. First of all, the Beta for Fedora 33 with Btrfs is out now for testing. OBS Studio has released version 26.0 and there is so much awesome stuff in this release . . . I just love this application! We've also got a couple updates for some topics from previous episodes, KWinFT Project has hit Beta and Thunderbird has a new release that allows for direct upgrades. Unity Technologies has announced something they are calling 'Open Projects' which is an Open Source Game Development campaign that is very interesting! We've got a LOT of App Releases to talk about this week with the Geary (Email Client) 3.38, Virt Manager 3.0, and two new applications that are quite interesting which are Cabin: a tool to create simple apps for Linux with natural language programming, and an app that helps you find duplicates, big files, empty folders, etc called Czkawka. And in the "is this really happening" segment . . . apparently Purism has decided to create their own Cellular Service for a phone that still doesn't exist. All that and much more comming up right now on Your Weekly Source for Linux GNews!

This week in Linux we saw some big releases from openSUSE, Mozilla, and more. We're also going to take a look at a new prototype laptop from TUXEDO Computers that I am very excited about. Then we'll jump into everyone's favorite segment, Legal News, because Valve is being sued for apparently overcharging gamers even though its much cheaper than buying games on console . . . hmm. On this episode of This Week in Linux, we have a ridiculously packed episode for you with a new release from the Linux kernel itself, KDE announced they are working on Plasma for TVs and we've got some distro news from SUSE, Endeavour OS and a new Deepin Remix for Ubuntu. In hardware news, Pine64 announced a new UBports edition of the PinePhone and we've got two new Linux powered laptops announced recently. Tuxedo Computers teamed up with the Manjaro project to make some Manjaro branded laptops and System76 announced their new Lemur Pro. GNOME announced a new challenge they they are doing with Endless Computers called the Community Engagement Challenge and we've also got some interesting news for the future of the Calamares installer to cover. There's also a topic that as a KDE Plasma fan, I'm not too excited to discuss this one and that's Qt's new roadmap where they are considering diverting away from Open Source to a degree . . . well, I guess more accurate to say a delay rather than diverting but we'll get to that. This week's episode is so jam packed that it is kind of ridiculous. Let's rapid fire this intro and you'll see what I mean. Fedora Linux 40 is out, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is out, Nextcloud has a new release of Nextcloud Hub and the release notes feel like they never end, the Flathub has released a new design refresh making it even better to use Flatpaks, and we recently had an awesome interview on the Destination Linux podcast that I gotta tell you about and all of this in one episode. I mean there's so much just in the Ubuntu topic that I didn't have time to cover the flavours, I'll tell you about those next week. Yea, this is going to be one of those episodes. 25 Apr 2021 | 148: Ubuntu 21.04, Linux On Mars, Linux Kernel Bans University of Minnesota | This Week in Linux | 00:52:37
On this episode of This Week in Linux, NASA has successfully flown a Linux and Open Source powered craft on Mars! In Distro News, Ubuntu has released "Hirsuite Hippo" so if you're an Ubuntu user you will certainly want to check out Ubuntu 21.04 or perhaps one of the 21.04 Ubuntu Flavours which have also been released. Then we'll check out the latest release of the Arch Linux based EndeavourOS. In App News, KDE has announced the first release of the Application Suite after the renaming to KDE Gear with KDE Gear 21.04. We'll also check out the latest version of the Geary Email Client and Jellyfin's new media player. Then we'll jump right into so Drama because IBM has been a little bit of hot water with some confusion over their employee development policies and it turns out Research Papers can get an entire university banned from Linux Kernel contributions. Forum Discussion Thread (https://forum.tuxdigital.com/t/259-ubuntu-24-04-beta-gentoo-becomes-spi-ware-solution-to-nvidia-amp-wayland-amp-more-linux-news/6208)
This week's news is exciting with cool new stuff and pretty bonkers because we narrowly avoided a security nightmare! A backdoor was discovered hidden in a common Linux utility, and it could have infected millions of devices. We'll break down how this almost happened, and what it means for you. Then, we'll switch gears and talk about some exciting upcoming features in Linux Mint 22. Fedora Linux might be getting a whole new look – we'll discuss a proposal to switch the default desktop environment. Flathub is making some changes to make it easier to indentify whether or not a Flatpak is official. Plus there is a new campaign for video game preservation that targets companies effectively breaking their games after an arbitary amount of time. 08 Dec 2020 | 128: SUSE / Rancher Labs, System76 AMD Laptop, Linux on Apple M1 Mac Project | 00:33:04
On this episode of This Week in Linux, SUSE's acquisition of Rancher Labs is now complete and I'll tell you why this matters. System76 announced their first entry into the world of AMD powered Linux Laptops with the new Pangolin laptop. A developer seems to want to prove me wrong about Linux Support for Apple's M1 Mac so we'll talk about that. Pine64 announced that the KDE PinePhone is available for pre-order. Plus we've got a lot of desktop environment news this week with new releases of both Linux Mint's Cinnamon and Solus' Budgie desktop and the dreaded single-threaded issue for GNOME may be coming to an end. All that and much more coming up right now on This Week in Linux!

On this episode of This Week in Linux, the Raspberry Pi Foundation announces a new 8GB RAM version of the Raspberry Pi and there's a new release of Kali Linux. We've also got some big updates for two audio editors in Ardour 6.0 and Audacity 2.4.1. We've got a new version of the Enlightenment window manager with 0.24 and a new tool for making Bootable USBs called Ventoy. We've got an update on the GNOME "Patent Troll" Case, it's been resolved. EA is releasing Source Code for 2 Command & Conquer Games. Microsoft is back in the news with 2 new items this week . . . one shows they may be really changing announcing DirectX for Linux . . . yea not really, of course there is a catch, it's Microsoft. Also Microsoft figured that pretending they are doing something good for Linux wasn't enough so they created a name collision with the Maui Project.
